Mar 5, 2019Trials Rising feels like a pure incarnation of the series, and its significant structural and progression problems could be addressed over time as the live game evolves. But that revision (if it ever comes) is not the game currently on offer, and the current playthrough offers too much frustration in return for the moments of humor and skill mastery. I’m still an enthusiast for Trials, but when your gameplay is this established and staid, there’s no excuse for the surrounding trappings to be subpar.

Feb 28, 2019Trials Rising is a fun game. There will be those who play it for a while just to see the different ways you can crash or to see its wacky tracks. And there will be who wants to master it's controls and become an expert in the game. This is the game's greatest accomplishment, that it can be fun for different type of players and everyone will have a unique experience with it. However, it will become repetitive rather quickly.

Mar 4, 2019Trials Rising, another excellent racing platformer hybrid, is bogged down slightly by an ugly loot box economy and an unnecessary leveling system.
-
Feb 26, 2019A large portion of Trials Rising’s content is gated off to all but those dedicated to playing this game and only this game for the foreseeable future.
-
Feb 26, 2019Some unfortunate flaws unnecessarily sour the experience, but this is a welcome return for the Trials series and its unique approach to motorcycle action.

Feb 26, 2019Trials Rising is a fun spectacle that puts the best of the nearly twenty-year-old series into one package.

Feb 25, 2019Trials Rising maintains the engrossing, challenging, and occasionally slapstick gameplay from past entries in the series, building upon it in small ways with a smartly implemented school to teach fundamental skills and modifiers to make events worth revisiting. But it also doesn't fix issues from the past, either. Its track editor remains uninviting to learn, and the more outrageous stunt events and course obstacles frustratingly lean more into random luck than calculated skill. Trials Rising isn't a reinvention of the franchise--it's an invitation to lose more hours to new exhilarating, technical, and ridiculous Trials courses.

Feb 25, 2019Trials Rising dishes out the tricks we’ve come to expect from the series. Developer RedLynx steps up their level design and delivers more content than ever, but overly-familiar mechanics and unseemly microtransactions make it hard to get too excited about the game. If you’re hungry for new Trials action, this game delivers, but don’t expect it to rise to the occasion if you’re already weary of the formula.

Feb 25, 2019There are some excellent levels in Trials Rising, though performance hiccups do generally detract from the overall bombast. A comprehensive campaign paves the way for a smoother learning curve than ever before, but protracted load times and lousy cosmetics will generally disappoint. The physics are still phenomenal, and the series has retained its addictive quality, but it can occasionally feel like a game looking for answers to questions that didn’t necessarily exist to begin with.

Mar 25, 2019Ultimately, the real problem is that the developers have gotten away from the core of what makes Trials great — ultra-tight gameplay, challenging tracks, and an elegant, streamlined experience that delivers several plates’ worth of steak with none of the fat, and that’s just not the case with Trials Rising. I’ve got the patience to attempt a tricky jump hundreds of times (more than 600 goes on an Extreme track is my personal record) but grinding for EXP in a series that’s always been about pulling off impossible stunts and ascending to dirtbike godhood? I’ve got no time for it.

Feb 27, 2019Those who can look past the charmless modernity of Trials Rising will find a lot to love in the core mechanics of the moment-to-moment gameplay, but Trials Rising is a perfect example of how seemingly minor and modern changes can drain the fun out of an otherwise great game, completely derailing the experience.

Feb 25, 2019I’ll be playing a lot more of Trials Rising in the coming months. There’s nothing like the agony and ecstasy of conquering one of its more difficult tracks, the heart-in-mouth tension of landing your bike on a near-vertical surface and revving just enough for the rear wheel to bite without flipping your rider backwards. Every tiny movement of bike and rider is significant and fully within your control. It’s a game about self-mastery, and believing you can do better. It helps that it’s also tremendous fun.

Mar 1, 2019It’s hard not to love a game this eager to impress me with its pyrotechnics. Trials Rising is the kid at the fast food joint, filling their cup with 16 kinds of soda. And it’s delicious.
