Love Transformers? Check. Love Bayonetta? Check. This is the best Transformers game released to date. 10/10 just for that. This one was completely under my radar, and I'm so glad that I purchased it. Check it out, it does not disappoint!

First, graphics are nice, they look exactly the same as in the old cartoon series, so they’re fantastic cartoony graphics that hit you directly in the nostalgia spot (if you watched the original series at some point). Sound and music are all right, I do think sounds are very good with a lot of sounds and voices being the same or similar to the original ones. Music, although it goes well with the game, it’s nothing special, so it is average/good.

The gameplay is a lot like many other platinum games, like bayoneta for example. Very fast paced combat with different melee combos, some ranged weapons, power-ups and ultimate abilities. It feels a lot like a classic beat’em up in a lot of ways. Gameplay is frenetic and fun, I got no complains about that, and you can try quite a different set of transformers so it gives you variety in characters. Also you can transform in the “vehicle” mode, which unfortunately it’s something that is underused in the game, since “vehicle” mode is basically just a way to get around faster. Maybe something more exciting could have been done with it.

One of the things that surprised me the most and it was fantastic in this game is the lore. There are a few collectibles in the game, and when you pick them up, they basically unlock a piece of lore. I wasn’t aware the transformers universe got such a rich and well developed lore so it was a fantastic thing to discover. Following this same line, the story of the game itself, although it’s nothing special, it was nice enough, it felt a lot like one of the old episodes from TV, a bit cliché but still serves its purpose.

My criticism for this game, and what prevents me from giving it a better score are the menu/weapon crafting system and the level design. The menu/ weapon crafting system is a mess and massively tedious. You basically, accumulate a lot of weapons and stuff that you can either equip directly or dismantle to get some bits and pieces and make other stuff. It takes a lot of time to do this and feels very boring. For a game that’s basically a beat’em up, adding this RPG kind of thing feels unnecessary and for me slows you down, something that could have been avoided whatsoever and/or simplified. Finally, the level design, it is horrid and I think it’s what makes this game, that otherwise could have been great, fall into the “average game folder”. Level design is super simple, all of them are kind of like clone long corridors that lead to open clone rooms where you find some bad guys. It doesn’t motivate you to explore anything as the map itself is boring and every room and place looks the same within a same location. For example, if you’re in the city missions, all the missions happen in clonic city-like corridors and rooms, there is absolutely nothing characteristic or special about any of them. That makes the game feel incredibly repetitive and even boring at times. It is obvious they didn’t spend a lot of time or money in trying to make venues something special. Shame, I do believe there is a lot of potential in the transformers universe for awesome locations.

Summarising, this is kind of a beat’em up game, that feels good in a lot of ways but it’s ruined a lot by the boring, repetitive, meaningless and clonic level design. It could have been a fastantic game and it is just average. If you’re a fan of transformers and you enjoy this kind of game, get it if it’s cheap, I think you’ll have some fun with it (although don’t expect anything special). If you’re not particularly excited about the transformers world I would spend my money elsewhere, you won’t find anything out of the ordinary here.

Playstation’s PSplus free games for the month program gets a lot off well-deserved stick (As of this writing April 2017’s four free games for the PS4 are just this side of a war crime). Transformers: Devastation was the perfect free game for that service. It is a game I would have never thought of picking up and despite my criticisms below I did overall enjoy.

I certainly understand the defenders of this game. A peek at a message board or even the TV Tropes entry for this game will show a large amount of passionate worldbuilding surrounding the Transformers franchise from the cartoons and movies, to the novel and comic book adaptations, to the fan fiction, Wikipedias, toys and I am assuming an off-Broadway musical.

I certainly understand the appeal of nostalgia when it comes to a property like this. I loved a certain Scooby Doo platformer from last generation that let’s face it I wouldn’t have looked at twice if not for the branding. And the original Xbox sported not one but two Buffy the Vampire games that were certainly more fanservice than top quality third person adventure. (Why does Buffy die if she touches water again?)

I am not a Transformers fan. I am too old to have seen it during its original run and I have found the entire concept bizarre. I have found the sheer breadth of generations, universes, adaptations outright perplexing. The fact that the game has retained the original look of the cartoon with some of the original voices actors does not register with me. On the other hand, I am not about to commit seppuku due to the mishandling of Starscream’s characterization.

Developer Platinum Games strengths are on full display here and the combat is overall a delight. It can take a while to get your groove on and it seemed a good hour before I gained access to the home base where I could upgrade weapons, create other upgrades, purchase additional moves and switch out my character. But once I was able to do these things the game was a delight. Outside of some bizarre top down, sections like a PG rated GTA 2 game and some unfortunate (though generous) platforming sessions, this game is a collection of third-person brawling and driving with the ability to switch between the two on the fly which allows one to do combos that simply never get old.

But good Lord is everything else a wreck. I actually like the cell shading graphics. They fit the retro theme and allow a butter smooth 60 frames a second. But the overall design lacks such imagination. You literally spend half the game in about twenty city blocks. All of which looks so identical to each other that you never get the sense of where in the city you are in though it is so amazingly small. It’s like a cartoon version of Dragon Age 2. The rest of the time is spent in boring spaceship corridors, boring Cybertron corridors and empty space (that is supposed to be in well space) All the objects in the game look the same, all the enemies basically look the same and everything has this cheap cut and paste glow to it.

The overall game just feels cheap. It is also really really short. I don’t mind short games but this one seemed to end somewhat suddenly. Replay value is there as the combat is fun but outside of that the challenge areas and different characters really don’t mix it up enough.

As a free game on the PS4, it is perfect. Issues such as value and length fall by the wayside. But as an original $50 download… it really is less than meets the eye.

I don't really believe in this whole system of saying "x game is better than y because it has a better score" I either like the game or I didn't. Let's get on to the review then.

Transformers devastation has a very unique combat system, you might be fooled into thinking this is just another bayonetta clone, but it does enough differently that it becomes its own beast, treat the game as its own entity and the game will become much funner. Not to spoil anything in particular, as discovery is one of this game's strong points... at least when regarding the combat, but pay close attention to using your vehicle attacks and gun during combos... trust me

The campaign is overall pretty good, the story doesn't feel too consequential but it is a good enough excuse to get you to fight tons of decepticon baddies and hear some very entertaining pieces of dialogue. What's not so good is the design of it all, the combat is excellent but what goes around it isn't. The map is laid out like a metroidvania but you are usually just following a checkpoint so it turns repetitive real quick. There is also a few set pieces which are either really boring or very frustrating, a platinum games staple at this point. The rest of the down time is simply scavenging for loot... which turns useless if you are good at the combat and don't need the extra damage to get by. There's also the fact that the enemy placements aren't very interesting... this does not become a problem until you replay the game a few times, and realize that certain enemy combinations are too simple to defeat.

Seeing all that might make you think that this game is average beyond its combat, and some of its witty dialogue, in theory that may sound horrible, being a one-trick-pony, but it all pays off when you get to mission mode.

Mission mode is the best, it thoroughly tests your combat skills, puts you against interesting enemy combinations, has better mini games than the main campaign (with the exception of top down view and "help the useless dude" missions) and cuts all the fluff that the campaign had. I know most people don't think highly of these modes, seeing them as lackluster distractions from the main game, but in this game, the mission mode is the real deal.

There is so much replay ability here, 50 missions, 5 unique characters to experiment with, 5 melee weapon types, and many unique guns, and 2 unlock able difficulty modes beyond the 3 default ones, buy this game!

But worse than the lack of variety is the crafting system. For some reason there is an utterly pointless MMO-style loot and crafting system for producing gear for the Autobots. It's needlessly complicated and slows down the game, as well as added nothing. Should have just had flat upgrades.

The sense of scale is done right, even down to buildings and cars being the right size next to the car mode, to looking small and insignificant in bot mode.

The combat is extremely satisfying, especially when you start 'mastering' the short list of combos and knowing exactly when to add the finishing car mode hit. Fighting against the main bosses is pure delight.

The visuals in the game are the cherry on top, and will really speak to fans of the G1 series.

In short, if Activision was already committed to making a sequel if the game sells well with a 7 hour playthrough, and improved environments, I would recommend an immediate buy to anyone who likes videogames. Platinum games could reuse the same engine, and all the current animations, they're that good.

The sad truth is, even if the game sells extremely well, don't expect anything but a cookie cutter sequel. It is for that reason alone that non-transformers fans should wait for the game to go on sale for 30$ before buying, or if you were on the fence and were waiting for reviews. People who made up their minds that it was a day one purchase won't be disappointed at least, and will have a lot of fun with the game.

Along comes this game and it's very much a love letter to the 1980's versions of Transformers. Low budget, cheesy animation? Check. Cheesy dialog? Check. Cheesy enemies? Check. Bumblebee as a car that resembles a damn VW Bug? Check! This is what a gen 1 nostalgia Transformers game should look and sound like!

The gameplay, as others have said, is reminiscent of Bayonetta albeit a touch stripped down. Adding in the loot and vehicle elements does really differentiate it from Bayonetta and makes it just as enjoyable. The only potential gripe is the length of the game but for this 1980's kid, the fact that I had a smile from start to finish more than made up for the short story. Be forewarned, however, that it suffers the same issues as every other Platinum Games beat-em-up, namely the fact that bosses on the harder modes WILL cheese the hell out of you if you miss your combo. Miss one hit and you can easily go from full health to one-hit-from-dead before you can react thanks to boss juggle combos.

Not sure I'd recommend it at full retail unless you're absolutely nostalgia driven, but it's very much worth a play.

There is something intimately satisfying about lunging at a 7 story tall Devastator as Optimus Prime, energon axe blazing...

Graphics look simple, but is actually very fluid and fantastic. Mouths move appropriately for speech. There is polygon breaking during movements, but that, too, is accurate to the 80's cartoon.

Music is hit & miss... actual gameplay features 80's style guitar riffs... but I won't lie, I was very disappointed to not hear the original theme music at the opening of the game.

Control is pretty tight. Combos are fluid, and there are enough on screen prompts that you never feel overwhelmed. Transformations are built into the design of the game, rather than being a gimmick, like they were in the Cybertron shooters.

I didn't like Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising and I hear TMNT is just as flawed. Transformers is just as flawed, it starts off with a bang and I had a smile on my face. The Cell-Shading is awesome , the voice acting and sound is true to the TV show, but oh my god did it get boring fast!
The game is super-linear and features repetitive enemies, repetitive objectives and a convoluted, unnecessary up-grade system.
There is no co-op which is a major omission and without explanation early on in the game you change characters and enemy dialogue continually refers to your character as "Transformers". A cut scene will follow and 4 other Autobots will appear as if they were there the whole time.
A major problem with Platinum Games, which is present in this title, is that they sacrifice length and quality for a perceived "replayability" in which they expect gamers to replay the same game several times on different difficulties with different characters in order to have the "Complete Experience"
Clearly this style of game is not for me and my review has turned into more of a gripe with Platinum and their shoddy development, game style. Alas I have learnt my lesson and will not be giving them another chance.

This game's from our friends at Platinum games (I've never played any of their stuff, actually) known for Bayonetta, Wonderful 101, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Madworld, that really gory Wii game, among other things. I've heard nothing but praise for them, and despite my high hopes, I really enjoyed Devastation.

It's like a normal action game...

    But with Grimlock.

The controls seem pretty standard, but since you're a Transformer, you can transform. holding the R1 button does just that, while briefly pressing it acts as your dodge, and well timed dodges slow down time. Square is a light attack, and triangle is a heavy one, preformed by weapons you can purchase with virtual currency, or loot from enemies corpses. You can also sacrifice your unwanted weapons to beef up the ones you actually use, which is nice, because I ended up with like, ten pairs of Thermal Gloves. L2 aims your ranged weapon, and R2 fires it, as per usual. the campaign takes six or seven hours to beat, but there's also a set of challenges you can unlock.

All of the characters feel nice and different, but I felt that Optimus was by far the best. Of course I wanted to use Grimlock, because he's Grimlock, but I couldn't seem to get decent results out of him, or really anyone else. The plot feels like it was ripped straight out of a cartoon, in the sense that it's not very good, but we're not here for the deep, immersive story line, now are we?

Overall, a pretty good game. It's free on PS Plus this month, so grab it if you can.

This is the best transformers game in a long time. The animation looks like the origional G1 cartoon but better of coarse. Fun story and dynamic of combining weapons. This is a very fun game and well worth $50.00. They could do so much with this genre. I hope for a sequel and more playable bots!

Devastation is quite easily the best Transformers game ever made. It has amazing combat, great voice acting, and a look that really feels like an episode of the original cartoon. The only negative thing I'd have to say about this game is that its a tad short. My campaign time clocked in at around 4-5 hours. If it wasn't for that, then this game would be a perfect 10. I'd say wait for a price drop, and then pick this game up. It is another enjoyable action game by Platinum, and a great Transformers game. Expand

Cool game, slick controlls, nice combat mechanics, pretty graphics. But all this is flawed with repetitive gameplay and short campaign. I had fun but I love Transformers and Platinum games in general. You might not be as entertained as I.

Again, another AAA title on PS+, this time a step up from last months Lords of the Fallen.

I had little expectations for Transformers Devastation (TD), I expected the usual licence game of all gloss and no substance/gameplay. Within the first hour I was incredibly wrong on the latter. Firstly, the graphics will punch you in the face. The game is a beaut. True cartoon characters, slick animations and a gorgeous rendered city to smash up. Drowning in nostalgia of the original tv series, transformers devastation is without a doubt the best tv series to game conversion I've played. It features 7 playable characters (some 10 hrs in now) each with it's own fighting mechanics to exploit to your advantage. I particularly like Grimlock so far.

The game reminded me slightly of Devil May Cry in it's fighting mechanic. Slow-motion on blocks and upgrading characters with unlocks (which become addictive to work towards, with little 'grind factor'). It's incredibly slick fighting, visually stunning and immersive once your knee deep in Megatron's army. On the hardest setting it's still well below Dark Souls frustration + difficulty levels, but just enough to mean a number of bosses etc will require a few attempts.

The downside of TD is probably the plot and story. I'm not a fan of the modern movies, but when you actually think of the synopsis of the original tv series, it's as unoriginal as it is comically cringe worthy. I've not really felt I cared about a single character or plot development, the voice acting etc isn't flawed in context with the cartoon, but that in itself was flawed, probably not when i was 10, but at 35 it now all seems daft. Regardless, TD has me eager to get home and plough on as the gameplay is really really fun!
For fans of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Mad Max style games, you will love this. For a hardcore Transformer fan, well you won't be reading this as you'll already own it - as this is to-date the best Transformer game ever released.
Highly polished. Highly fun. Recommend you get PS+ and download now - or I'm sure it'll be in CEX for £15 by now. A great addition to anyones games collection

The first time I've grown with Transformers was with Beast Wars, but with this game, I understood the nostalgia many TF fans will get from it; it LITERALLY plays like an episode of the classic 80's show. It's a very fun game, the setting is very simple but the vibrant colors make it beautiful, the playable characters are very interesting, each one unique, with different skills and styles, and the combats are very good, the boss fights are insane, I even had some difficulties with some. However, I think the story could have been better used, it is extremely simple and generic.

Transformers Devastation is the definition of a fan-service game. An excellent combat system layered over sights and sounds that take children of the '80s back to their youth creates a memorable experience for Transformers fans. The only sad thing is that it never really goes deeper than that.
