A very enjoyable cover-based shooter with some tense online multiplayer gameplay, and a whole lot of heart and soul. When I'm not playing it, I'm thinking about playing it, and its been some time since I've felt that way about a game. 8/10.

Two gripes: 1. You don't encounter real-world players while exploring the game world, only at communal safe-houses and in the dark-zone. 2.

The weapon crafting is something i will have to get a better grasp of but I've created some pretty decent modded weapons that rock.

The game was enjoyable during beta, but I wasn't ready for full release. The game is engaging and fun and I haven't even thought about heading into the darkzone yet! Awesome game.

Anyone complaining about the gameplay has no excuse for even playing the game. There were a number of betas released for everyone to get involved in. There is no reason you couldn't have played it before and judged the game before you bought it. If you didn't like the gameplay in the beta and then purchased the game anyways, well I guess you are an idiot.

Not great, but very good game. Most enjoyment has been playing with friends rather than playing solo. The story is pretty decent, but it's not an epic narrative. [It's still better than Destiny's] I'm about 16 hours in and looking forward to spending many more in The Division.

Fast forward several years and rumors of graphical downgrades ala Watch Dogs and lackluster looking alpha build videos I decided against preordering and honestly didn't even plan on purchasing this game. However, Ubisoft has surprisingly lived up to the hype this time with an extremely addictive and innovative squad shooter/RPG online hybrid with a fully fleshed out 26 chapter long single player with a story that keeps you going. And the way the game looks and sounds? Let's just say that the original E3 teaser footage really wasn't too far off--the graphics in The Division are simply stunning. Post-apocalyptic NYC is gorgeously rendered with sharp textures, realistic lighting, and amazing weather effects. I was really skeptical about this game but now after buying it and playing it, I'm totally sold. The Division ROCKS!!!!!!! Expand

This is so much better than destiny ever was.

From the Beta to the full game, you will notice some few things they added to make it better. For one thing you have an overhead marker to tell you where the hell to go this time. It's helpful because in the beta there was this one mission were the enemies were in between the buildings and I had no idea how to get in... Had to circle around

It's helpful because in the beta there was this one mission were the enemies were in between the buildings and I had no idea how to get in... Had to circle around the whole **** building just to find the entrance. This waymarker makes it MUCH easier.

There is also crafting in this game! Learn new recipes and craft more powerful loot!
Oh did I mention there is also ACTUAL trading in this game?
And the matchmaking is perfect! there is even matchmaking for freaking free roam! perfect!

Story isn't terribly interesting but isn't terribly boring either.

Missions can be somewhat repetitive... and there always has to be like some final boss in the end of it. Side missions are all the same really, but at least they are quick to do.
Upgrade system is great, not only do you have your abilities like in the beta, but now you have these other perks you can get to make your character even more useful.

Oh and of course you can customize every weapon with scopes, magazines, skins, etc.

And of course there is the dark zone... which I haven't really touched yet because I know there are going to be a lot of high level players there.

It may not be a 10 out of 10, but more like an 8.5 out of 10.... I only gave it an 10/10 to counter those 124 negative scores. The 7.0 is making the game more average than it should...
Like really most of them are just from people who were pissed of at the downgrade or just at ubisoft for what they did in the past.... not necessarily about the game itself.

This game has mechanics that Destiny should have had. I enjoy doing quests and such for EXP and using EXP to level your character rather than just having gear you put on determine your level. Whether playing solo or in groups of four, the game is fun. I think if you merged the two games, you'd have the best game ever but don't sell The Division short. It's great in its own right.

From fine-tuning my character's skills, crafting, modding weapons, and looting (key elements of an RPG) to intense strategic, cover-based shooting - this game is action packed! So when I read one of these kids' reviews complaining about "no substance" "no quality" I had to laugh. That could not be further from the truth. THIS GAME IS BRILLIANT. Do yourself a favor and pick it up today. Invest a few hours exploring, figuring out menus, etc. The amount of time and love put into this game is impressively evident. I've been playing since launch and have only been disconnected for the server once (on launch day) - aside from that, my experience with The Divison has been FLAWLESS. 10/10

Some say missions are repetitive, but they're crazy. Yes, the central gameplay mechanic is shooting, and that repeats - it's a shooter. But the tactical variety in the world and level design means no encounter ever feels the same. Vary your tactics, skills, weapons, verticality, etc and each fight is a blast.

Solo or co-op are both viable and fun. Amazing game, world design is absolutely stunning, and plenty to discover and do as you explore this incredible game. Massive is clearly one of the best studios Ubisoft owns. Great job guys, lived up to the hype and then some.

The missions are interesting, different, and the best part is playing them in hard mode, in COOP. Playing with friends is an awesome experience, funny and interesting. That said, once you have your character as you like it, you and your squad will start romping through the city again - that is until you level up, get more gear, find better weapons and the whole process starts over and over and over.

We picked through what remained, spared the other players who strayed into our lines of sight and made to the extraction with a really nice haul. We bated our time and waited for the helicopter to fly in and drop our only means of securing our new toys. I waited for the clock to drop and then I stroke. Kicking the only member of our squad that we had picked up at random and robbing his carcass of anything he worked hard to collect. We divided it up, extracted, and then went our separate ways. It still feels like I left some small part of my soul back there, on the snow covered LZ where myself and two friends led our new buddy to the slaughter after spending an hour fattening him up loot.

So I put it on youtube with some funny sound effects to make myself feel better, and we went about repeating the process.

The game is not fun. Lots of time spent running. After about level five average enemies take about 6 headshots to kill, let alone "elite" enemies. Loot drops are unpredictable and useless. The leveling up and base improvement systems appear to give you lots of freedom, but ultimately you just unlock everything and choose between three special powers. Story missions can take up to an hour and may devolve into you waiting in cover with your cursor in one place, waiting for the enemy to pop up, shooting him, taking enough bullets to almost kill you, and retreating to heal. God help you if you join up with another player who is a dumbass and keeps getting himself killed, because once he dies, the game will leave you alone and stick you with multiplayer enhanced difficulty. Auxiliary missions, required to upgrade your base, are painfully repetitive and unrewarding. The character attributes aren't well explained, so item equipping is sometimes a total crapshoot. The PvP aspects of the "dark zone" are a total mess but are capable of providing some fun.

Perhaps most irritating is the game's online requirement. You encounter chilling moments where you shoot enemies endlessly and their health does not go down, they will stand still as you move around, and you suddenly realize you're in the middle of a lag. When the game finally comes through, anything could have happened. That is, if the game doesn't just crash and send you back to login.

Despite all of these complaints, you will keep going back to the Division. Something about a shooter RPG with MMO elements will tickle your gamer scrot and you will want to play. I hope you have a good internet connection.

The game implements them well so far, but at times it can be frustrating. One of my first major fights came early in the form of a boss battle. The boss had goons alongside him, and the fight escalated quickly with me retreating often. As a matter of fact, I was pushed all the way to the entrance to the rooftop where this fight took place. Needless to say I died a lot. Most of this game is pretty balanced, but occasionally you will find yourself overwhelmed. The game will show no mercy at times hitting you with unbeatable amounts of strong enemies, and nowhere to take cover. I played about 6hrs yesterday after work (alone without friends or random ppl ) and i love it.the character editor was a bit disappointing with only a few costumization options but ok thats no big deal.
The map is huge and filled with many many side quests and random encounters, you can take over enemy bases, gather supplies for the poor ppl that are left in manhattan or collect resources for your base that u can upgrade.
The weapon customization is great and there a many different guns to find, buy or extract from darkzone.
The story so far is nice and im looking forward to many hours of fun with this title.

With so much to do from day one, it will take most players weeks to max out their characters and, even if they do max out quickly, there's the very competitive Dark Zone where you and your friends can try to fight for more impressive gear. While players might find the story a bit distant for the first several hours of gameplay, knocking out main story missions and engaging in bits of filler story scattered throughout Manhattan will quickly begin to paint a picture. Of course, players that stray a bit might find themselves trying to remember why they're out doing some seemingly-random tasks. The biggest opportunities for improvement lie in The Division's cover system, which usually functions well but has a few quirky glitches now and then that might frustrate you in a moment of combat. Where Destiny wants you to replay every single mission over and over to push forward as a player, The Division is built to be progressed through a story that isn't told through heavy repetitive missions. In fact, you'll never be encouraged to replay a mission unless you found it fun or need to recap what's going on with the story in that specific mission. Otherwise there are always new missions to play through until the very end (level 30 at launch). Graphics are solid, albeit not quite as impressive as they were three years ago when the game launched. This is unfortunate since the Snowdrop engine being used by Ubisoft is very powerful. Though we don't get the greatest visual experience on consoles, the visuals are still strong - especially when you consider this is a massive world. Even things like heavy snowfall and fog can play a vital role in visibility in some cases. Perhaps the most encouraging news is that Ubisoft isn't pressing for your hard-earned cash right away. The first few minor DLC packs will be free, with a pair of major DLC expansions that will really stretch the game - all within The Division's first year. Where Destiny is a bumbling mess when it comes to the long-game, The Division is much more strategic and engaging right from the get-go. If you can appreciate the third-person shooter viewpoint and dig open worlds that encourage social engagement then The Division is worth a try. Expand

Truthfully I play most of it solo, and then I do matchmaking to replay a mission on hard. The co-op can be as simple for you as Dark Souls co-op feature. You don't have to use your microphone, and you don't have to hear other peoples as well. In doing it that way, for me, it makes co-op a lot of fun, and just a useful tool to get better "goodies" from hard missions.

At its core it's a fun sandbox RPG that can be easily tailored to fit how you want to enjoy it. The gameplay is crisp, and while others may balk a graphical downgrade, I don't see it because I really don't know what it was supposed to look like. I didn't follow the game very closely up to release. As with anything on metacritic my score is slightly inflated to account for the 0 scores, and the fact that there is no .5 system. It's not off by much though, my true score would be 8.5.

So let me start off by explaining the score I gave of 8. This game with friends is a 9 (close to a 10, to be frank) but a 7 (maybe even a 6) solo and being that I play both solo and coop about equally, I average it around 8.

Pros: the environments are not half bad - graphics wise, not the best but in terms of displaying a dilapidated Manhattan, I think it is pretty spot on in terms of what comes to mind. Coop can be super intense - with the right people working together, every key story mission and (especially) Dark Zone exploration is jampacked with enjoyment and adrenaline because it does encourage legitimate cooperation to get things done. Story - while not the most original in many senses, it does fulfill what Tom Clancy novels/games are known for, making it feel like a lot is on the line and manifests itself in an eerily plausible occurrence in the realm of Biowarfare. Customization - the game does have a lot to offer to make sure most people find what type of fighter they would be, be it a rusher with a shotgun or a crit hitting SMG or one who stays back to pick people off with high precision ARs/DMRs, its all there for the choosing.

Cons: To be honest, the biggest issue comes down to the fact that if you are not playing Coop, you are not really maximizing the experience of this game, which I can completely understand because I also enjoy some of my games done solo. Though the game is, admittedly, on the short side, it has the room there to grow even more (maybe it might follow in the footsteps of Destiny where after like 3 expansions, it will come out at as a whole collection for the same price when it would be worth the buy as the smaller issues get ironed out). I personally got the Gold edition, so I don't heavily consider this a big con but I can understand if some people do if they don't have any future DLCs in mind and are upset at what they currently have right now.

If you do plan on a pick up, I encourage you guys to spend the extra 30 and go for the Gold to make sure you got future DLCs covered but if you love playing solo, there are honestly more fulfilling games on the marker for that type of play-style and I implore you to check out other games before investing in this one.

I was able to participate in the open beta and was pleased enough to warrant an pre-order. Then they dropped their year 1 content announcement and I was sold to upgrade to a Gold Edition. I had to hand it to Massive for putting out a concise plan, and wanted to reward that with my dollars. Usually I can be fairly skeptical, but what can I say other than "I had a good feeling."

So let's start with the bad: There were a few glitches and issues in the gameplay that came up on my day 1 that made me rage for around 20 minutes -- a portion at the start of the game forces you to login in an open area where other PCs can block you, and took a long time for the system to recognize me and get me actually going. Nothing game breaking otherwise. I'll have to feel out the endgame content more but I could see it getting a bit tedious or repetitive if not careful.

The Good: The handling and mechanical feel, while not at the level of Destiny, still feels great. The RPG mechanics are robust, and if you like yourself some min/maxing and number crunching this game is for you. It reminds me of an interesting blend of Destiny, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty. Why?

Destiny for its open world simulation. It exists at a nigh MMO state but doesn't quite cross the threshold, while emphasising Coop PvE content. Unlike Destiny (before the taken King), Division has a semblance of a story.
Mass Effect for its RPG elements and tactical combinations. One of my favorite pasttimes is playing the Coop multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 quite a few years ago, and figuring out the best combinations with my buddies to create the most explosive and deadly combinations. This game doesn't just take that idea but it advances it in every way. Multiple buff consumables, completely customizable skills to use, perks to choose from, talents to unlock, and guns and armor that advance specific playstyles.
Call of Duty, I know may sound to most like a rebuff to the game, but actually I think stylistically the game matches that gritty, one man army idea. I advance and work with a team where I can, and has a certain element of military precision to it. The gunplay feels most familiar to this game series as well.

All in all I strongly advise giving it a whirl. Time will truly tell if it is able to stand the test but I'm very enthralled thus far.

If you liked Destiny at launch, there's a strong chance you'll like this. Maybe even more...
This game has stronger RPG mechanics than Destiny yet the environment is extremely bland and unappealing to me. I strongly recommend to play this game with your friends. With more content and dark zone refinements this game will easily get an 8 or above from me.

Game of the year? It is the best game of MMORPG Shooter . I played beta and i thought this game is awesome. I have not bought The Division yet, but i will do that. I have been watch streams for 2 days and Iactually can say The Dvision the best MMORPG shooter. Ubisoft made a successfuly greate game as Rainbow Six Siege or Far Cry Primal. 10/10

The games graphics are STELLAR with SHARP IMAGES and VERY FEW JAGGY EDGES and UBISOFT need to be congratulated in this department. My main CONCERN is REPETITIOUS quests and this already seems to be the FEEL after a SOLID 3 hours of game time. Don't get me wrong as I'm having FUN & I'm satisfied with my purchase at this stage but I'm very concerned about BEING BORED WITH THE DIVISION AFTER ABOUT A WEEK and I HOPE this isn't the case as this game HAS LOADS OF POTENTIAL. I THINK IT"S ABOUT TIME GAME DEVELOPERS DEVELOPED SOME INSIGHT or more to the point (COMMON KNOWLEDGE) and came to REALISATION THAT VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE and the KEY INGREDIENT TO A GAMES SUCCESS !!!!!! Despite some annoying bugs (disconnection, framerate drop for exemple), the game is an excellent TPS, I just hope there will be some raids in the future.

The game looks absolutely stunning and had me stroll through New York just for the view, looking for streets I visited there a few years ago. Everything from lighting to reflections in puddles and windows look fantastic although arguably less so than its PC counterpart. In terms of depth it might be too soon to give the Division the edge over Destiny but it offers so much options in terms of customization that I absolutely love it. Adding a scope, grip or paint to your rifle and seeing it swing from your backpack is ackwardly satisfying. The only possible downside I can mention, is like Destiny, is the chance of repetitiveness in terms of missions and foes. I hope that with more time and progress in the storyline, I have played roughly five to seven hours now, the variety in missions, foes and their tactics will increase because this is what ruined Destiny for me, it was just too repetitive. Overall it looks and plays better than Destiny, its customization options far exceed Destiny's kits and classes (although Destiny's gear estetics where nice too look at) so the Division has tons of potential and I hope Ubisoft will be continue to add to this world by both free and paid content.

PS For all the FPS players: THIS IS NOT AN FPS AND DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY IT THAT WAY. ITS AN RPG..

Ignore the naysayers. This game is awesome.
It might have been subject to a graphical downgrade but it still looks great. Very effective use of lighting. (Be sure to knock off the chromatic aberration setting)

It is a considerably more rounded game than Destiny (to which it has been often compared) with a much more distinct sense of purpose to the game. Destiny felt like a collection of arenas tied together with a very flimsy narrative. The Division's narrative is much more clearly defined and the world is much more cohesive.
Multiplayer works like a charm in PvE.
My only criticism is that there may be some balancing issue with difficulty in the Dark Zone (PvP).
Hopefully Ubisoft will be able to balance things out in the future.
    A very very good game.

The atmosphere in the game is wonderful. Environmental art and sound are top class, there seems to be plenty to keep us all occupied, and I'm looking forward to the Dark Zone and PvE challenges to provide a solid end-game experience.

It's a lovely having these different engagement modes inside the same game.

I have played this game for nearly 1000 hours, and I have witnessed the long road to redemption this game has been through. While the initial 30-40 hour campaign is fine as it is, the endgame had plenty of problems. Initially, I noticed its many flaws, but gave it a pass because I saw its potential. The developers were very slow to tap its potential, and while still more than two years fixing it they haven’t reached the peak, they have accomplished almost most of it. Unfortunately, it’s already too late for people who have abandoned the game, that makes the game less profitable and sends resources to other paths instead of perfecting the game. While they finally got the loot, the balancing and activities right, the developers never got to fix their crown jewel, the Dark Zone. PvP is a toxic mess that counters everything the game is set to do, and not for everyone, but it’s there if you want to try it. Fortunately, those who want to avoid the Dark Zone and PvP in general, now have plenty of activities to do. The community on PC is all but depleted, so I recommend the PS4 if you want to easily matchmake for the surprisingly long list of activities the game has gathered through the years. I believe at this stage, the developers should capitalize on the positive changes, and lower the sticker price of the game significantly, avoid paying full price for it at all cost, but do buy it. Good game, worth buying at 25% discount. $80 CAD is too much when you take into account that there will be many other things to buy from cosmetics to expansions. I feel like the game should have sold for about $60CAD max ($45 USD).

I have encountered a grand-total of 0 bugs. For me the launch was quite smooth. I understand a lot of the bad reviews come from angry-entitled players trying to play the game right the second the game launched. I played yesterday, March 8th, at about 8PM EST (less than 24 hours after launch) and it was 100% stable.

The gameplay is fun, the graphics are pretty good, but I'll need a new rig to play it @ 4K :D. I like the mood when you go through the streets of NYC at night.

It won't win converts to the genre and the plot is problematic, but The Division is a handsome open-world offering, spiked with treachery. [May 2016, p.81]

That's the essential nature, and essential problem, of The Division's underlying structure. It's asking you to hunt gear with no tangible reward in terms of what you can do, how you do it, or what you look like doing it. [May 2016, p.108]

It builds a strong foundation on the gameplay front, offering up rewarding combat and simple skills, but doesn’t follow that with anything substantial, being content to let the standard end game grind and excellent-yet-stressful PVP try to cover all the questions its writing leaves you with.
