It shares almost no similarities with the originals except for some story elements, locations and certain Easter eggs. The game is simply a first person stealth game, hardcore at that, but generic. Garret is poorly voiced, as are many other characters... Especially Orion, who is disappointingly the weakest of the cast. The best of the characters would be Elias Northcrest, the villain of the game, because at least he has motives... Everyone else does not, and they only do things because the story requires them to, such as the woefully undermined character of Thaddeus, or the Thief Taker General... A character who is one dimensional, and is unrealistically cold and ruthless, as goes the rest of the cast.
Disappointing are the side characters, such as Madam Zhao Zhao, who could have been a fascinating and unique ally to Garret, and they most definitely advertised her before release... Only to make it for a single cut scene, where she didn't even get the chance to interact with Garret.
The game ends poorly and abruptly, with two VERY out of place boss sequences. None of the characters evolve, or change... They all end up where they started. This is with stark contrast to Thief 3, in which Garret's character (Stephen Russel) ends by maturing, releasing his fate and seeks to become the "True Keeper".
The only sections of the game that felt remotely like a Thief game were in fact the levels which were based around the original game's factions, such as the abandoned cathedral and the hidden library. The themes are all wrong, there was no tension (except for a horror level akin to the Shalebbridge Cradle from Thief 3) and all menace was gone.

The game is surprisingly linear, only two-three levels are actually open ended and large, but very unoriginal. The one level, which was easily the greatest in terms of design and theme was The Bank Heist, which was a thrill to ghost through. The rest of the levels offer only one or two ways in, and small spaces in which to avoid the AI.
The removal of a classic jump button, rope arrows being streamlined and a objective marker are the worst mistakes that they made in terms of gameplay, and the rest of the game topples with the removal of these options.

The game quickly improves with the Custom Difficulty setting, in which it makes the game much better and you are able to make the game feel somewhat like the originals. The open world City sections are poorly implemented, with small areas in which to explore and a horrible map. How the game expects you to remember all of the locations of the original levels, I have no idea.

There are some positive things, such as many side quests to do, interesting writing with Client Jobs, lighting is excellent, the swoop is excellently fun, and focus mode is optional.

    Positives:
    Swoop is awesome.
Side quests/Client jobs are funny and are a great divergent.
    Custom Difficulty Settings!
    Challenge modes!
    AI is intelligent on Master.
The Graven were a fascinating faction.

    Negatives:
    The Story is bland.
The structure of the City is horrible.
    Too many load times.
    Over simplification of multiple things.
    Levels are very much linear.
    Underutilized and one dimensional characters.

The story is boring, characters uninteresting, and the voice acting is on par with any performance by Keanu Reeves. Expand

I absolutely loved the franchise and I wanted to believe (I really, really did) that they would do it right. But alas a few hours in and I just can’t take it anymore; I’m uninstalling and I only have myself to blame. As a middle age PC gamer I can’t stand games that lead you around by the nose like the very limiting linear path through the missions or the over the top (for those who can’t be bother to try and figure ANYTHING out) focus “ability”. It’s sad when they chose to make a game that while trying to build suspense by having you cross a beam 2 stories up they make it so you can’t fall or because you’re so limited as what types of moves the Devs think you should be allowed to do in a given situation, they have to make what little is open for you to touch glow blue because you’re obviously not bright enough to figure it out for yourself or for that matter, have a world full of objects but make them unable to be touched or manipulated. What kind of 1980’s hardware are we running on?!? You really can’t bump into something or pick up a bottle on the same table as a goblet that was worth something so you can throw it to distract the guards…really. To make matters worse, the voice acting is second rate and the story is lacking in so many ways it’s pathetic. It fails to pull you in or engage you in any way (the truest old time Thief experience is found in side missions that have no bearing on the story). This game reeks as just a money grab on a venerable franchise that had no one to protect it. Eidos Montreal should be ashamed; I know I am for wasting the $45 on it.
Maybe it’s me but I can’t stand houses such as Eidos Montreal nerfing the controls in PC versions in favor of features like the cover system in DEHR or the lean mechanic and multi-function (just not the one you want right now) button in Thief. I’m thinking it’s just that they are console players and have no grasp on how to play with a keyboard and mouse. I could be wrong but there is no PC player that likes the cover mechanic in a FPS unless they’re playing with a controller. I’m not against console control options but just like every PC gamer out there, I can crouch and move while aiming and accurately firing without some help and without nerfing my controls; it’s not hard.
This game fails on too many levels. There may be some of you out there who don’t know the franchise and have low expectations but I think that even you will be disappointed with this game.

The setting. Remember the old three Thief games? Ok, now forget them! Since Thief 2014 is a reboot, you will encounter *nothing* from the old ones. I mean Eidos Montreal has *totally* destroyed and erased everything that made Thief series so unique: Keepers, Pagans, Hammerites, Mechanists, Kurshoks, burricks, and hell - even zombies! Everything!
The plot. Definitely the worst I ever met in video games. Just abominable! You still have some doubts? Ok then. Just try to watch the *bossfight* with Thief Taker General on YouTube and see for yourself. Yeah, *bossfights* in a *stealth* game.
The audio. It's just disgusting. All NPCs have just two phrases, and several NPCs have even just *one* phrase. And you know what? These NPCs will repeat their "repertoire" till the kingdom come, with just *one* second interval. Sound propagation works so erroneously, so it was a real pain for me to understand where the sound came from.
The protagonist. His new voice, by Romano Orzari, sounds so dull and boring! Instead, the old Garrett's voice, by Stephen Russell, was just brilliant! So if you still love Stephen Russell's voice as Garrett in Thief 1&2&3, you will absolutely be disappointed by Romano Orzari's voice in Thief 2014.

Bottom line: it's a tasteless hack, so make yourself a favour and save your money for something really useful.

Thief is a game that succeeds on many levels, but falls short of greatness due to some questionable writing choices, and sometimes stiff mechanics.

It's obviously been a long time since the last Thief game, 10 years to be precise, but the formula is alive and well in more ways than one. Eidos Montreal have given as a fresh and interesting stealth game that can be brutally challenging at times.

And I think that's where I should start. A lot of people seem unsatisfied with the games difficulty and/or AI, and this kind of bothers me. After playing and finishing the game over some 15 hours, I can say that the difficulty was one of the most rewarding parts about the game.
When you start a new game, you are given a custom difficulty option. This is the way to play the game. Base difficulty on Master, No Focus, No HUD, No Loot Highlighting, No Takedowns or Knockouts… This is what made those 15+ hours of play so rewarding. It was a true, tailored to me, stealth experience.
Reading both critic and user reviews, it is so clear that people played on the preset difficulties, and didn't bother tampering with theses options.

Obviously difficulty is not something that makes the game worthy of a perfect 10, but it is definitely a redeeming quality.

The gameplay, while at times fluid and streamlined, can sometimes become clunky and difficult to get along with. In one instance I would be slinking through the shadows evading all those around me, grab myself some coin out of a guards pocket, before using the awesome swoop mechanic to… well, "swoop" back in to the shadows. And those moments feel so, so cool.
However, moments later, I am accidentally leaping off a ledge that's slightly too high and killing myself, due to an overly sensitive jump/climb/run button on L2. The fact that the button does all of those things is not the direct problem, it's just that all I would have to do is skim it with my finger and I would be falling down onto a guard that I was prying on from above.
As I wanted to go through without a single kill/knockout, and wanted Zero Alerts on missions, this would result in a direct reload of previous checkpoints, and with some of the questionable load times in the game, this became quite arduous.

Visually the game is pretty gorgeous. There is never much colour on display, save for one of my favourite missions in which you mush navigate a brothel, filled with shades of red and gold. However this is a game that is perfectly in touch with its own time period. Though this is fantasy, and no precise date is given, the architecture and setting fit the mood perfectly.

I've left the story for last as one would think it would be the least important part of a game that wants you to steal everything you see. Eidos put a little too much faith in it, and the laughable writing makes the characters even less likeable. If nothing else, the fact that such a story was implemented, it led to some amazing scenarios and levels, one of which was a haunted asylum, that sent chills up my spine at every turn, and was a very unexpected treat.

Overall, Thief is worth playing. March 2014 will be busy for both new consoles, and if you're on PS4 like me, you're most likely excited for inFamous: Second Sun. If you're looking for something to pass the month, Thief will be a worthy endeavour, if only for the Trophies.

    A 7 out of 10.

But ultimately the game is let down by average graphics, a poor attempt at open world, bad AI and annoying loading screens.

The game plays like Dishonoured (but not as good) for those of you nippers to young to remember the early Thief games on PC. Now I like the early games and a lot of the things I loved have been transferred to this game. The light and Dark meter, water arrows and the gothic medieval setting. Thief is at its best when creeping through the dark, blowing out candles, dashing up behind guards and rummaging through draws and lock boxes to find stealables! It is at its worst in-between missions having to go through the same areas of the quasi-open world waiting for loading screens to disappear. Now if the game looked stunning and the world was traversable like in say Assassins creed allowing you to approach a mission however you want, I would forgive the load screens. But on the PS4 this is not acceptable, the graphics are okay, nice at times but never next gen.

The controls work, the touchpad stuff can be frustrating but all in all they don’t brake the game. But I do feel there is such a missed opportunity by making each route so linear. The story is interesting enough to keep you playing but isn’t memorable. The missions require you to steal a specific object which I enjoyed, they should have just scrapped the bits in-between missions and had a straight forward level after level mechanic rather than tie it together with the open world which doesn’t work. It would have helped the game flow better.

I did enjoy Thief though. I like the medieval setting and the stealth mechanics. The actual mission levels are well designed and interesting. But nostalgia played a part in the fun I had as I enjoyed the early games. I would recommend if you can pick up for cheap, as there isn’t much on the PS4 at the moment and this is a neat little filler game. But if you pay full price you will likely feel disappointed.

In no way better than Dishonoured, but similar and worthy of a play though if picked up for the right price.

They're paid roughly a dollar a review and if it dupes just one consumer's mind in thinking they want the product, they have done their jobs.

    Do not let that happen.

Sure a few of these reviews have been conducted by old time fans' of the series. That is clearly evident by some of the rambling diatribe and the counteracting subjective scores. But look closely at the accounts that are created for the sole purpose of defending an anti-smear campaign by the public.

Prepositions are non-existent (foreigners of a native language often forget the connecting words when translating. They touch base on only a few features of the game and admit to one or two weaknesses to get you to think they are "just like you".

Frankly I'm appalled that this is going on, on every major website that 18-34's frequent. If it wasn't so obvious, I would have left it alone. Do other companies do this? Sure, but not to this extent. The collaborative effort on this must have cost 1/3 of their total game budget. If they spent half the time they do now employing people to write ghost reviews then they could have fixed various bugs, glitches and linearity in the game itself.

And that leaves me with the actual review. It's not a bad game. It's not a good game. It simply exists. If they make bank on it, it's because it came out when there was a shallow market and a demand for anything on next gen systems. Its spiritual predecessor, Dishonored, did everything fundamentally better without sacrificing. If the gameplay is good, I can overlook the story. If the story is good, I can overlook the gameplay. But by no means can you make me go from Point A to Point B, give me nothing to do along the way but steal some petty coins that are useless in a boring merchant system, and force a story that is shallow, pedantic and frankly -- very cliche. The guards conversations are repeated many a time to force dialogue in a lifeless atmosphere. The sound is absolutely horrid for a stealth game. As many other reviews have noted, someone who is two buildings away sounds like they are right next to you. It really ruins the experience.

Albeit it being a monotonous money grab, I've played worse. And by worse, I mean Rambo.

This Thief game has its moments and it never gets old creeping around and stealing stuff and collecting artifacts which is the primary reason I have scrored it a seven. The flaws that keep it from getting an 8, 9 or 10 rating are the following:

    - Very hallow generic game, not much life in it and the storyline doesn't help either.
    - Loot is constantly everywhere which can be a bad thing since your constantly hitting square collecting things. Not sure why we need to see an animation of him swiping stuff.
    - Garrett talks too much. Serioulsy though the acting could be a bit better and the animations sometimes come off as cheezy or last generation quality. Overall I'm not sure I like the Joaquin Phoenix look of Garrett or his sidekicks.

Anyway the game is fun but not worth the money. It definitely has value in the $20-$30 range but as is I can't recommend this especially for die hard Thief fans because it's pretty different from the older games.

Nice try but hopefully Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have better luck on a sequel.

This game was obviously built with last gen systems in mind which would be fine if the PS4 and Xbox One didn't have the same loading blocks the PS3 and 360 are plagued with. Another issue I have is a lack of support for someone who likes combat. You can do standard sneak takedowns, but once you're spotted it's a matter of mashing one button and dodging. Even then, you are quick to die and it's clear as day this is a game you are meant to play stealthily. All i'm saying is a few extra animations or an option to boost your combat skills like you can Stealth or Agility would help. The game desperately tries to stay true to the original games, but in the age of games like Dishonored and Assassin's Creed that do what this game does and miles better, I would only recommend it if you want a pure stealth game. I say it's a love it or hate it situation. Give it a try, but don't expect to be blown away by anything. Expand

I spend more money on games than I'd like to admit. Given the amount of games I play, it's natural that all of them are not pure awesome and I accept that. However with Thief I feel that I've been brutally cheated. I begin my review from the assumption that it's a 10/10 game (what I expected).

-1 point : Contextual jumping & climbing. Seriously? Really frustrating. -1 point :

-1 point : Contextual jumping & climbing. Seriously? Really frustrating.
-1 point : Contextual sound? Sounds coming through walls ridiculously loud only after it's triggered by looking into a room. Also lip sync is way off.
-1 point : Loading all the frigging time. Each area is a small box with a couple of side alleys. Horrible map design.
-1 point : A stealth game with missions which have Pipe A and Pipe B (or just Pipe A)? Absolutely no room for creative solutions.
-1 point : Only a few doors/windows can be operated. It's silly that most of the doors are impenetrable by the best thief in town. There's nothing to really discover.
-1 point : Just for the missed potential and overall feeling of a hastily finished product.

This leaves us at a disappointing 4/10 game. It has nice graphics and the controls work for me (except for the contextual movement). Also some of the stealthy bits are fun. I was expecting much more. As a stealth game this is far too simple for my taste. I will not be buying the possible sequel if this is the route they are taking Thief to. I feel cheated.

As for the elements of the game that are more universal(PC, XOne, and PS4), the writing is much like the visual presentation, tight in some places and sloppy in others. It's one of those games that shows how video game writers often aren't the best when it comes to dialogue between characters. The story is interesting on paper, but the elements of the world feel like they are somewhat archaic throwbacks to more traditional video game character throw backs.
I don't enjoy making the AC comparison so often, as someone may misconstrue it as "throwing all stealth games together", but the game brings me back to AC in many ways. The disjointed way you start and end missions, the very overt personality to the side characters and how you meet them, and as I said earlier the animations are about on the same level. Now obviously I would the similarities as games end there, as everything else would just lumping similar concepts not gameplay. In gameplay, it is more akin to the developer's previous game Deus Ex HR, but with a heavier emphasis on stealth.
I'd say that if you're an average consumer who isn't too interested in the Thief games, or stealth games as a whole, I'd stay away from it. But if you enjoy the series and want to see how the properties is handled in modern times, I'd say go for it. But the PC or X-Box One versions may be the better route, as the PS4 version has too many technical bugs to be excused. Which is embarrassing considering how other games like Killzone have had no big issues with steady Frame-rate or 1080p.

    Just sayin'.

Very surprised by the heroic scores of "critic" reviews. Do not be blinded by the 10/10 or 90% scores...one imagines there are incentives for those people posting such reviews and scores.

Since the dawn of time, mankind has struggled with difficult philosophical questions such as, "how did the universe begin?" and "is there a God?". Add to that list "how was this piece of amateur-code allowed to be part of the Thief franchise?"

    It shall remain unknowable.

I am attempting to get a refund - that was no joke. I am a real human reviewer/gamer who played the original thief classic titles on PC.

I thought it would tide me over until Infamous second son. Well no its on ebay already. The game oozes with just average everything, game-play, story. There are doors that won't open and barrels you cannot search, places you can't climb where if if this were more like Assassin's Creed or Skyrim, you would be able to. However, the enjoyment of sneaking around the city, into homes, up among the rafters, and so on, really picks up. The limitations put on you either ease up or become less noticeable because of the challenges presented, so even if it isn't GTA5 in terms of interactivity, it is nonetheless a lot of fun and it is extraordinarily beautiful to look at. The game also shares for elements from games like Splinter Cell. In Splinter Cell: Black list the game was tracking your play style. Basically you have 3 play styles. Same thing with Thief. You have similar play styles. And they are 3.
Although the game doesn't really encourage you to go and start firing arrows at everyone in open combat, it does allow you to engage combat in case you are spotted and there is no way out but fighting. But there is always a way out without fighting anyway :)
However I do have my take on new-gen release. There is necessary load time between different maps/locations in the city or during a mission. In PS4 & XBox One I don't think this is acceptable for small game like Thief. I compare thief to large games like GTAV that hardly had loading time while playing in massive open world map. And GTAV was on last-gen consoles.
Now in new-gen consoles having this loading screens while moving between different areas of the map is totally annoying because you know that you have the power to avoid that.
I think Thief deserves something between 6.5 and 7.5 out of 10. So I think I will give it 7

I think the games stealth element works very well, and it feels amazing when playing in the dark, but sometimes you get frustrated because some ledges you can automatically drop, others you press buttons and some you can't, so I could be walking down about to jump off then I'm not allowed. Characters are underutilized, especially Madam Zhao Zhao, who I was expecting to play and important role in the story, but only makes it for a couple of letters and cut scene in which she/he didn't even get to interact with Garret.
The villains are laughably evil, aside from the Baron , who at least has a bit of characterization with his motives.

Gameplay is extremely tense at times, but controller snapping frustrating, especially the very much out of place two final boss battles at the end which are almost impossible if you were to collect all loot without being detected.
Levels are unoriginal most of the time, aside from the excellent Bank Heist mission, which has been taken out for a preorder bonus.

The story is a re-boot of the series from the 90's. It lacks a bit of the complex of the first game but the stealth and stealing aspect is great. Story is good with some interesting twists. You have everything wht you want from Thief. Opening up chests and safes, stealing from people, avoiding guards in the shadow and sometimes striking from above or behind to take out an ususpecting guard. Unique lot to collect and inspect in your hideout. Interesting upgrade system.
The best thing still is the custom difficulty level you can creat with points and ranking. You want no combat only stealth takedowns or maybe instant failure when you are spoted? Here you go this makes the game amazing and one more thing the save option. Save in any part of the world and missions.

Thief is a game that will find its audience. The game play is slower but it requires you to think and plan how you will approach the mission and goals set in front of you. It is the same kind of as SCPT, SCCT, First hitmans, and of course thief 3 ( I haven't played first and second, due to the age of it, because I am not of those hardcore gamers who can somehow get into game which looks ridiculously old and technically flawed). Therefore if you enjoyed those games, and had fun finishing levels without enemy being aware that you ever been there, you will definitely like thief, if however you haven't enjoyed those games, I recommend you don't bother with the game as it is not intended to play any other way that stealthily. Patience is rewarded here, cumbersomeness of melee combat purposely pushes you to avoid it.

The levels have usually though not always few points of entry. Overall level design is created for stealth play. There is a lot of detail to get you distracted while you're waiting for a guard to move.

Few mechanics could have been improved such such picking up objects, because it does take a lot of time, for example if you open up a chest your character will stand up opening it, then he will crouch again ( in that time you can not control it), and then you will need tu stand up again to pick up the items inside, which will again make him move, which takes unnecessary time.

Guards AI haven't improved since 2000s. Some of them have only one line which they will repeat over and over again, which is extremely annoying. Besides that sound seems good, I liked the ambient sounds in the city and during the missions, it does really manages to capture the atmosphere.

Story is just like in most games these days. It is just too much acting to many cinematics, etc. It's a game not a movie, even though the story was well acted in many games, it should not be the main purpose of the game in my opinion. You play the game for the sake that you discover everything. The story that you can overhear in the game from dialogues or monologues of people is what is great about thief, plus the text documents. That type of story telling lets you uncover the story, its down to you if you read it or not what happens in the city.

Now talking about the city itself once again in my opinion it is great, and I will tell you why. First thing first it is stealth game there fore you are not supposed to run and gun, no one supposed to see you, that is exactly why the architecture in city is designed for you to stay out of sight, and I have never seen such an interesting design of the world. Sure it is quite difficult at the beginning as it is quite big, but then you get familiar with it, because every place is unique. I wont be forgetting the flaws nevertheless. The loading times are ridiculous, this just like AI haven't improved since 2000s, I mean things like these are really unacceptable especially in 2013 where open world games with absolutely huge worlds have no loading time at all.

And for the last I wont be criticising the Thief fans who have lived their lives playing thief games and do not like this game at all, but I will just say to them that if they think they are obliged to get something, they can forget it. If you want to play game like thief 1 then play that game and don't complain about it. Games like SC or hitman are evolving with the generation (and that is why I stopped playing them because it does not deliver the same as first games), and its up to you to grow up or stay at the same level.

In conclusion this game is for hardcore stealth fans, as it was specifically was made for them (the custom difficulty (and retarded focus abilities, which I haven't even used) was added for more action oriented player and NOT the other way around!!!). Great executed game with a lot of technical flaws.

The only complaint I'd really have about it is having to move around the city between missions is annoying and repetitive.

But even better was the gameplay, Thief has some of the best gameplay in a game in recent years. Stealth in this game can be intense and rewarding. The feeling you get after finishing a level all stealth is the best!

That's all I can really say because I didn't even finish it because the long loading times and boring story turned me against it.

First of all, Thief is not a bad game. It's just not the best stealth game ever. After playing it, I played the very first Thief game from back in the game, and thought it was excellent. The new Thief reboot is definitely a great game, but doesn't quite live up to the name of the original.

One of the pros that Thief has is definitely it's story. Since I haven't played the other Thief games, I couldn't tell if this was a sequel, but i was intrigued by Thiefs characters, especially Erin.
Also, the game looks beautiful. It's very rare in the game that you will have the pleasure of being able to see daylight, but when you do, you'll be sad when the game switches back to night time.Sure nighttime still looks good, but it's nothing like darkness in games like Watch Dogs.
Now to the cons. One thing that Thief added that wasn't really needed was the time it took you to get to the start of a new mission. It should've gone straight to the next mission, and it feels downright unnecessary when playing, unless you want to rob an apartment on the way there.
Also, the AI seems really unpolished. While playing the second mission, I shot a guard with a sharp arrow, and he said "I think I heard something." Plus, they are frequently glitchy. As another example, I was hiding behing a cart, and a guard walked behind it, and he couldn't see me. I restarted, and he saw me from a mile away when I returned.
So Thief isn't a bad game, but if you didn't like the first few Thief games, you won't like this one any better.

Not very innovative, but a decent stealth game overall. The best part about the game is being able to steal anything you want and you truly feel like a thief. During missions the level design can be very linear and straightforward at times. However, you are rewarded for finding hidden secrets and solving puzzles. It's a simple yet fun action-stealth game but it does have its flaws. 7.5/10

Some of the refinements and changes for the series were for the better, including an approach of less ambiguity in HUD information and general grinding through missions for arbitrary loot totals. It's mired a bit by a muddled narrative and some repetitious elements like loading screens, but on the whole it was a great game and a good foundation for future entries.

This game was so much fun that I have since bought a PS3 and a PS4 for myself. (I was playing on my SO's machine.) This game basically got me back into playing video games - I haven't owned a console since the PS2 and gamecube were new.

Thief is a supernatural stealth game from a franchise that has been around for quite some time. I have never played a Thief game before this one and from what I hear old school Thief games are much more difficult. So this is a more modernized and accessible game for people who would like to start trying out older Thief games. Personally, I really enjoyed this game for what it was. The graphics are quite nice but suffer from pop in from time to time and minor clipping issues. The controls for the most part are solid but can be fidgety at times when you're rushed or sometimes may cause you to fall to your death if you're not paying attention. The game has RPG elements with upgrading your gear and abilities with gold you loot from places and Focus points you get from either finding hidden symbols or buying them straight up from the Queen of Beggars (I think is her name). There are about 30 side quests with 8 Chapters in the game. The locations are well designed and look great giving that steampunk look to the City. The sound design is also pretty well done, sometimes making the game feel like you're being watched in certain areas. Now to the voice acting, it's good for the most part except for the damn audio bugs that tend to happen occasionally. Like the infamous "what's a third offense get you?" bug. It's hilarious but very immersion breaking. Another thing I didn't like was the backtracking within the City, I got quite familiar with the loading screens. The combat in the game is doable but I don't recommend it because if you're surrounded by a bunch of enemies you're more than likely to die. That being said, that's why this is pretty much a pure stealth game at it's core. The story is ok for the most part, nothing groundbreaking. I enjoyed the Thief-Taker General's character but ended up not enjoying Erin's character so much. Just found her to be annoying most of the game. There are plenty of collectibles and hidden areas to be found in the game so keep your eyes peeled all the time. Thief is a good game that feels unpolished but holds alot of content for completionists. It's a worthy stealth game to add to your collection. Expand

I didnt really like the horror parts in this game, but that's because I am bit of a chicken when it comes to this. I love horror games but I dont dare to play them, and if I buy a game where it turns out that there is a bit horror to it I always catch myself saying "why me?", but well sometimes you have to challenge yourself :) I bet it's not the scariest you can play, but some parts of this game creeped my out, but again I am not a hardcore horror gamer so I guess some horror gamers would laugh at me if I told them this :)

I initially starting playing this, felt it was a bit boring and shallow, and thought I'd see if I'd missed the point, so read some reviews. Reviews on here seem to either be in 3 groups - full of praise with high scores, full of criticism with scores around 0, or reviews around 6 or 7, with a more balanced take.
I can see how a player could reach either of these 3 conclusions - probably spending a bit more time with the game, doing some of the sidequests, and really getting a feel for the mechanics of the game helped me to move from being one of the haters to more of an appreciation of the game.
Don't get me wrong - all in all, I'd say this game is around a 6.5, and it definitely has its flaws, but it kept me playing (and I completed all the sidequests too), and there were moments that were pretty thrilling. I bought it 7 years after release and paid £7, and so I definitely got value for money.
Some reviewers have pointed out the obvious parallels to the Dishonored games. I would say that if you've not played any of those games, and if you don't have an infinite amout of time for gaming, play the original Dishonored instead of this game.

    The good:
    - gameplay on the whole is good. Fundamentally the game offers a stealth experience, and it delivers, with a few mechanics that are unique. This is the most important point - if this wasn't the case, I wouldn't be recommending this game is worth playing. There is a boss battle, but in keeping with the gameplay, it is made clear that you can in fact sneak away from the battle (as I did) rather than engage in combat
    - the setting. Initially I really didn't like the setting. The City - and your player character, Garrett - are dreary, miserable, lacking in motivation, and seem doomed to desolation. As a new player of this game, I found the whole thing a bit overwhelmingly depressing - if Garrett doesn't care, why should I? Were the game designers really just phoning it in? Over time, I realised that this atmosphere is in fact very deliberately constructed, such that you feel it in every corner of the City, in every sidequest where you must fetch a trinket for some sad sack's short-lived happiness, in every overheard conversation where you realise the guards are just as miserable as you are, and in the overarching plot where you are really just trying to find some lasting connection beyond your self-imposed isolation
    - replayability - after completing the main story, you essentially get a New Game +, and so if you want to be a completionist, or missed some sidequests, you can go do them, and similarly if you want, you can replay chapters (main plot missions) or sidequests, and aim to meet the various "thieving challenges" set for each mission (e.g. achieve X number of kills, remain undetected, etc."
    - drama: whilst the game isn't heavy on setpieces, there are a couple - one in particular - that had me on the edge of my seat, and I think I forgot to breathe for a bit

    The bad:
    - plot. It's a bit uninspired
    - the voice acting. Again, uninspired - but also, having a variety of international accents pop up really does break the immersion from the parallel universe Dickens-on-steroids City
    - characters - side characters and quests could have been fleshed out a LOT more
    - the maps. Most of your time ends up being spent trekking across the City (especially if you do the sidequests.) As others have commented, the City ends up being heavy on loading screens, but also, it's a bit tiresome to have to sneak past the same guard patrol for the 15th time just to get from one place to the other, or if you want to go visit a merchant to buy more Rope Arrows. Of course, if you do knock out or kill the guards, they'll simply respawn the next time you come past. A fast-travel feature would have avoided this tedium (although there is a certain initial joy to discovering the extent of the City.)
    - environment. It's not always 100% clear what will happen if you press L2 somewhere. WIll you jump across a gap, or just jump to the ground? There are some things you can't jump on. Finally, the game makes a big point about the importance of light - you can snuff out candles, and shoot water arrows to douse flaming torches, and switch off electric lights, and yet you can't shoot out light bulbs? Seriously? I found this immersion-breaking. More broadly, only some of the environment can be interacted with - eg. it would have been good to able to shoot out windows
    - upgrades. I didn't end up using many of the them; a lot are to do with combat, which seems to defeat the point of a stealth game.

Summary: this is not a bad game, at times is a good game, and is worth playing for the gameplay, if you've not played a Thief game before. If you've not played any Dishonored games, pick up Dishonored 1 fir

    - Combat is a joke. You bring a bludgeon to a sword fight. What sense does that make! I get that Garrett is a thief but trying to hit someone over the head with a bludgeon several times while the enemy is swinging their sword at you is really unfair. What i don't get is that he is able to kill enemies with an arrow, but yet he does not have any other melee weapon on him except the bludgeon in which i don't know maybe him having a knife on him would've made more sense!
    - When in enemy is sitting in a chair and you take him down, the animation of the enemy is the worst i have ever seen! They sort of just flop.
    - I wish you could loot arrows from enemies which would've made my life much easier.

    Misc:
    - Dialogue is cheesy at times, but didn't really bother me like it would others.
    - Enemies are really dumb.
    - This game kind of has an Evil Within type of feel at times when Garrett has a voice inside of his head and also when he goes from one environment to another.
    - This game can be extremely brutal to you if you are low on resources as during Chapter 7 and 8 i was low on everything and died A LOT!
    - The fight against the Thief Taker General is real unfair when you are low on resources. And once again you are stuck with a bludgeon while he has exploding arrows and a sword. Took me about 30 minutes if not more to defeat him.

This game is pretty straight forward and had the same concept as other stealth games, but had a different approach and for me it worked. Overall i enjoyed the game.

Even the guide for Thief says the map design is terrible. The lack of fast travel makes navigation tiresome. It was difficult to figure how to reach certain windows. Довольно нудная игра, прошел с трудом из-за того, что было неинтересно, в целом для фанатов стелса, остальные проходим мимо. 6/10

Everything that was good about the older PC games is lacking from this. I stopped playing, it's awful.

Definitely worth playing if you are a fan of stealth games.

What I don't like about it:
The combat system is really weird. It is not really lame, but definitely not fun. Even after I got used to the combat, I do not enjoy it a bit -- so most of time I went stealth.
Upgrades are not interesting. They are somewhat useful but they didn't really make the game more interesting.

I think it's a decent game, but it lacks a lot of details to be experienced like you're really in a live world...

Sure it isn't groundbreaking or the best stealth game nor the best thieves. The game is disappointing for thief fans and other gamers and I can see why. It has a lot of wasted ideas and sure it could had been better but it was for me a good enough introduction to the franchise and made me like the original better

The game costed me 2$ on PS4 store. Totally worth the money. Little dated with clunky controls and bland story, but worth the money. I don't feel I got cheated. You have a free Saturday??? This might be it.

If you like stealth gameplay then this is worth finding in the bargain shelves.
Sure it doesn't live up to the other games in the series, but that's a very high bar.
It is still a Thief game at it's core and if you consider yourself a fan, give it a chance. This game is a little less linear than it's predecessors but the gameplay sticks to a working formula and doesn't over complicate

This game is a little less linear than it's predecessors but the gameplay sticks to a working formula and doesn't over complicate things. You find yourself in a free roam city hub containing gates to the more linear story chapters - with plenty to do in between.
The graphics and lighting are more than adequate and of course play a huge role, and the sounds and dark medieval environments in general are well done.
On a standard PS4 the loading times are excellent, if a little too frequent. A serviceable save system also helps.

    The negatives?
It took me a while to warm to the movement.. The controls are not customisable and the way you interact with edges is not always consistent.
The puzzles you love to hate from the original are still here. Don't be afraid to look up the solution, there's plenty more game to enjoy.
Finding your way can be tricky with the multi leveled environments and a very average map but that is something we have come to expect from the series.

Good action stealth is hard to find so I think this is still worth recommending at a sneaky 7.5/10 Stars.
If you've played a Thief game before try starting on a higher difficulty - and if you're not the patient type then tiptoe around this one.

Honestly, one if not the most boring game I have ever played in my life. It was so boring it took me years to write this review because I never felt like I cared enough but finally, after nearly a decade at 1am at night I have found the time to write this. Do not waste your time. You will wish you could have this time back. Trust me.

Answer: 75 characters is between 10 words and 19 words with spaces included in the character count. If spaces are not included in the character count, then 75 characters is between 12 words and 25 words.

I appreciated the freedom of choice in deciding how to approach the missions, which could be completed either through stealthy maneuvers or more direct action. The storyline of Thief is engaging, although I would have preferred deeper characterization of the characters. The story unfolds coherently, but at times it can be somewhat predictable. I encountered some technical issues during my 2 playthroughs. I experienced occasional bugs and frame rate drops that affected the gameplay experience. Fortunately, these issues did not completely compromise the overall enjoyment. I highly recommend to try it to genre enthusiasts. Despite some technical problems, the immersive atmosphere, solid gameplay mechanics, and well-designed missions make this adventure worth experiencing. With its intriguing world of theft and infiltration, Thief offers a satisfying experience for those who relish the thrill of moving in the shadows. Expand

The biggest problem for this game is every stealth game that has come since Thief: the Dark Project. Thief can’t match the visual flair and supernatural powers of Dishonored. It doesn’t have the lean efficiency and murderous creativity of the Hitman series; it trails the razor’s edge stealth and gadget lust of Splinter Cell; it lacks the vision and bombast of the Metal Gear series. Hell, it doesn’t even have a very good thief.

The return of the master thief Garrett is a mixed bag. Thief builds on its series proud heritage of tactile stealth, focusing on realism but loses some of the way to modern design trends. Thief has some unnecessary padding that smooth out the gameplay as well as some cinematic ambitions that do not reach all the way. Above all, it is plagued by qualitative valleys that appear to be a result of a stressed launch. Nevertheless, Thief gets a weak recommendation because the basic formula is still fun and somewhat unique.
