A great RPG. One of very few games that I 100% completed. Compelling with an excellent story. Enjoyed the ending but wasn’t ready for it to be over. The main campaign seemed short.

The Presentation, while a little robotic at times, is quite good. The animations can be definitely be stiff but the voice acting and writingis absolutely top notch. Better than almost any game I've played this generation.
That being said, the gameplay has a few issues. the character abilities, while a nice touch, can be a bit intrusive to the flow of gun fights. They absolutely have a purpose and have saved my ass on too many occasions (I play on hard mode), but the animation should not have to play every time. Perhaps if they implemented a system where it only does the animation if it is going to kill the last enemy in the vicinity. I find that would make it more meaningful than to play the animation every 10 seconds (use the abilities as much as you can!)

Unfortunately, the game also suffers from a few too many loading screens, but I understand Obsidian was working on a really tight budget and they had to cut corners where they could.

I think that this entry in the genre is a safe play. They did not do anything out of the ordinary, but what they did create here is a beautiful, charming, fun game made with passion.
If they can take this game and expand on some ideas, I have a really positive outlook for a potential sequel.

Kudos to Obsidian, they deserve all the praise in the world for the things they are able to accomplish in short time spans/tight budgets.

For me, a former huge fan of the entire Fallout franchise, playing this game was nothing short of Obsydian showing Bugthesda their middle finger. A beautiful, rich game with a solid story line and a filling of freedom in decisions on how to finish it. I only wish it was longer and it had a build motive like we had in fallout 4

CC is terrible, though its fully first person and you only get to see your character in menus, so it does not matter much.

The dialogue from the player character side is better than anything any RPG has had to offer since Obsidian's last 1st-person shooter RPG foray *cough NEW VEGAS cough*. In many ways it does outshine New Vegas, but generally-speaking, everything feels like it's thrown at you at once with no sense of adequate pacing. You basically know every companion the second you meet them, there's very few things in the way of characterization that you learn as you travel with them. I think that this really is the fatal flaw of the game, how blunt it is. If your frontal lobe is underdeveloped and you just like when the funny scientist man doesn't like capitalism, then you're liable to have a good time. If not, you'll probably roll your eyes half the time, even if you don't disagree.

There's also a huge problem with moment-to-moment gameplay, since the combat is literally the worst I've suffered through this year at least. I played on hard, and my lord is everything too spongey. Ammo is basically a non-concern, so to balance that out they made everything deal basically no damage. You can basically only play stealth since it feels like nothing makes any real impact, especially in the first half of the game. If I can get turned into red paste in a microsecond, then you bet your ass that I think my shotgun should do the same.

Play it through Gamepass if you can, or buy it on sale.

Feels like a Fallout alpha. Lacking in depth, the game is half-assed when it comes to not only mechanics but also items and fighting. It seems that most all of the effort is solely about the story. This title should have been $20-$30 and released like an indie title. Disappointed.

Great effort and nice to see a complete single player game RPG with no in game transactions. But for me personally felt a little dated and flat, completed casually over a week but nothing pulling me back in to give it a second go or complete more side quests. I think it’s bridged a very wide gap of better executed fantasy epics. 6.5/10

For me it was the most boring game experience so far. The dialogues with most NPCs were hopelessly boring just like some missions. Nothing about this game was anything exciting or exciting enough to keep playing. Graphically this game is also a hopeless failure for me that would not even fit on the PS3. conclusion, Outerworlds is the most boring game experience in this universe.

The good: very well written, in terms of story and characters. Situations are not black and white, nor are the characters you encounter. (spoiler ahead) As an example, the first bad guy you encounter is actually not bad at all. Dialog and voice acting are on point. The game makes it seem as if your actions matter. The character creation is simple, but inspired.

The bad: I'm not a fan of the art style and color palette, though I guess that's just taste. The game is too short.

In the end, a game whose worst flaw is that it's too short is a good thing. I just want more of it.

In terms of what's great about the game, the story and interactions are extensive and immersive. There is depth in the narrative of the game. The companions all have interesting stories sans Pavarti, for me. I felt it was stretched too far over the story for something that was pretty frivolous. The environments all felt pretty unique. If you like the old Fallout games, particularly (and obviously) New Vegas, you'll really feel at home. In retrospect, the length (on the shorter side) actually didn't bother me. On reflecting, it was just right where it didn't feel like I was grinding and killing time. Compare this to the most recent Assassin's Creed games. They were so big that there was a lot of grind and that started to mess with the story. You lose track of it. I thought the combat mechanics were well done. For these types of titles, this was the best gun play I've gone through. It's akin to a top FPS game. Well done. I didn't get into the Melee so can't speak to that. I was strictly ranged.

The bad? It's been said but the graphics feel dated for a AAA title. The Fallout/Elder Scrolls FPS engine just feels more cartoonish animated. I think Ubisoft is doing the best "world" graphics with Far Cry and Assassin's Creed with the latter being the most photo realistic. Far Cry is a little more cartoony but it feels real. I know these are alien planets but they feel more 2D than 3D and the design and color choices just feel like they could have done a lot more with them. The cities and ships are the best part, graphically. Also, I felt like the companions could have had more depth and clarity in terms of how they should be built and combined. They didn't seem to have as many unique perks and you couldn't necessarily tell what their specialties were...at least I missed it until I looked on the internet.

In many respects, this game is almost a "vintage" release. It truly plays and looks like a FPS RPG from the 2000s but with some modern day polish and sheen. Almost like if they had decided to make Fallout New Vegas Remastered. The environments are more contained like God of War 4 or Shadow of the Tomb Raider but there is less exploring and achievements. You're better off to follow the story. It has nowhere near the depth of an Open World game where you can just kill time exploring and discovering cool stuff. Take it for what it is and relish in what it does well and I think you will really enjoy the game.

The companions lack any real standouts and the AI is weak. Character development is okay, but it lacks the depth of a Fallout or Elder Scrolls. The game itself is very short for an RPG. The Outer Worlds just lacks that layer of depth you would expect of a game of this style. The result is a linear game with an open world DNA. It's fun for the ride, but It doesn't really fill your belly.

The combat is really satisfying. Going into slow-mo actually has usage in this game instead of just looking cool or aim better. Going into slow-mo and shooting particular parts of the enemy has a debuff effect on them. Combined with your companions' unique abilities, there is lot of tactical gameplay here.

But I don't consider that a problem, it actually manages to cram a loot of content and entertainment into those 25 hours and it mainly does away with boring grinds or "get X of Y" chores - there literally was only one of those and even that ended interestingly.

The graphics are impressive, if a bit garish - probably not everyone's style, but I found it well done and consistent throughout, with clear identities for the various worlds. The game combines aspects of Fallout, Mass Effect and Borderlands, although it arguably misses the key elements that made those games stand out, respectively the size and depth, the deep character story-lines and their impact on the story overall and the off-beat humour and 'a million guns' collect-a-thon. Still, apart from those signature elements, the game does feel like it's learned from its predecessors and avoids most of their flaws.

So, why only 7/10 then? A few reasons.

First and foremost, the game feels rushed out. In various parts of the game I encountered bugs that didn't completely break the game but made playing frustrating and breaking the fourth wall in the worst possible way: letting me know I'm playing a game that was released before it was properly finished; and having me pay full price all the same, without an 'early access' discaimer. Apparently we've arrived in a time where that is no longer needed, we all need to accept that buying a game early after 'release' means you're volunteering to be part of the final testing and paying for the privilege.

Secondly, although the game sets up a massive world with interesting factions and a strongly written backstory and the quests and stories fit into that nicely, there's many loose ends and aspects of the game that feel unfinished. The game is heavy on gun-play, but the guns are very samey and apart from the basic categories being fairly different, there's no interesting weapons to discover or work towards. The later weapons are literally "Some gun version 2", with the same graphics as "Some gun" and stats that are simply "more damage". Another aspects that feels it didn't get enough attention is experience gain. There was only about and hour between me getting about 800xp for killing a hard monster and being given tens of thousands of xp for hooking someone up with a partner in a dialog. Same for money - someone makes a big deal of paying you 1,700 bits for stealing world-changing research from a heavily guarded military base, but 2 hours later my character casually offers a guard a 3,000 bit bribe to look the other way for a misdemeanor.

That lack of attention and unfinished-ness also result in the third major flaw: the uninspired ending. Without spoiling it, it feels railroaded and uninspired. None of the clever interaction and varied approaches that were written in so well early on. Just a hard to kill boss (even though I can one shot every other creature in the game and have 100/100 stats on firearms) and a linear progression through levels with a very disappointing payoff on the hard-fought faction standing.

In the end, it's easy to see what The Outer Worlds could have been. And it starts out really strong. Perhaps it can be saved by DLC and ultimately a definitive version in a year or so. But that's not why I fork over full price for what's supposed to be a triple-A title from an established publisher and development team. Currently, The Outer Worlds does not deserve the high marks give to it by people who clearly didn't play the whole thing through.

Everything feels disconnected, uncanny, unnatural and forced. Uninspired kill & fetch quests turn your journal into a boring to-do list. Eventually I just kept going from A to B, killing the same enemies in the same crossroads, corridors and camps with explosive boxes.

The whole game lacks variety and polish. It's like Obsidian just decided they have to release in October. Even TOW's character creation is a big step backwards. There's not enough sliders or even hairstyles (for women at least) and the faces remind me of the Oblivion potatoheads. You keep blindly looting the same stuff all over again like a robot. Levelling up anything else other than speech and tech skills is useless.

Guns miss the much needed KICK and the gunplay often ventures into Borderlandish bullet-spongy territory. Wanna know how my gunplay loop went? I resorted to spamming one button - the one that activates special abilities of my companions. Man, these cutscenes get old fast. But it was still faster than endlessly shooting the dumb hostile NPCs. Don't even get me started on melee combat. What the hell were they going for here? A homage to Morrowind?

Yes, it's supposed to be story-driven. Mind you, I just came after playing Disco Elysium. And TOW hasn't caught my attention at all. We can all probably agree that Parvati is cute, but that's nearly not enough to carry a game. Maybe the main plot gets better later. Except it's already too late.

What really happened here, I think, is that people really wanted to send Bethesda a huge middle finger. This was actually a part of Obsidian's marketing campaign. I guess that worked for them, but the game itself did not meet my expectations. This game gets more credit than it deserves and its rating is strongly affected by the recent AAA games. Meaning their microtransactions, bugs, artificial corporate statements - you name it. TOW has none of that, but evading these flaws does not make your game automatically a masterpiece.

    Here is why:

I was nervous about pre ordering this game (not that it really matters since there is literally no harm no foul for cancelling a pre order and it's only $5)... but my trepidation was from the fact that (surprisingly) not many people I knew had heard of this game in the year leading up to it, but also, I had very high expectations due to the promises of the "throwback rpg" that was supposedly bundled in a "Firefly" type universe. I mean... c'mon! What more could you ask for?

By "throwback rpg," I'm referring to the good ol' days where your decisions ACTUALLY meant something. Your freedom was real and not artificial and not just some marketing promise used to get you to buy the game. I'm talking "old school, dialogue heavy, relationship building, watch your vicarious character's traits/personalities flesh out and evolve right before your eyes based off of your decisions and actions" kind of game.... did that make sense?

So with my high expectations, I couldn't help but feel that I was setting myself up for disappointment... like so many other games that came out in recent years (*cough* Days Gone *cough*). SO MANY GAMES get our hopes up with OVER promising and UNDER-delivering.

Folks, this game delivers on all fronts. True RPG. True to it's promises of decision making/impacting dialogue... OH AND the combat. One thing I didn't hold my breath on (because of past shooting mechanics of the Fallout game) was the... shooting... mechanics. I was doubly prepared for poor shooting because I just came off of Borderlands 3, where the shooting is phenomenal! LOW AND BEHOLD....THE SHOOTING MECHANICS ARE SHOCKINGLY GREAT! Perfect? No. But they hold their own, which just adds to the already superb premise of the game play. It looks like Death Stranding is set up to be a snooze fest and a disappointment (based off of early reviews... even the good reviews state it's boring and extremely frustrating). All I gotta say is thank you "The Outer Worlds" for being the first game in a long time.... maybe ever for keeping ALL OF YOUR PROMISES... AND THEN SOME!!

buuuuuuttttt, the criticism this game gets is abit unusual as it mostly boils down to "0 out of 10, bethesdas better, fallout 4 has better gun play and its a man hating game for sjw's" like what? i can understand the better gunplay (because it does) but people saying that the enemies dont react when hit clearly hasn't gotten their guns skill over 20. also, in the first planet (light spoilers) the leader of edgewater is seen as bad and the leader of the deserters is seen as a vengeful women who wants to keep her group pure, yes shes into eugentics. im not joking, shes a women in a game whos into eugenics where apparently its sjw and man hating, dude this game just straight up hates everyone.

I am probably not the only one who gave this game a high score because of their love of Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas, so be aware that I'm probably more than a little biased as I write this review.

    First, the bad:
Graphics obviously aren't the greatest and although I like the character and creature designs, at least more than the potatoe-faced models you saw in New Vegas, most of the outside environments feel a little "meh". Like visiting a No Man's Sky World. But, like New Vegas, the graphics aren't why I fell in love with this game.

    Enemy designs:
Although I admit that I find the monster designs interesting, there's a lot of palette swapping going on.

    Combat:
A bit mixed on this, bullet time/Tactical Time Dilation, Science Weapons and Companion Abilities do bring some fun options to the table. But in most cases if you've encountered one Marauder, you've encountered them all. Fortunately, in most story-based missions and sidequests there are ways to circumvent combat if you don't want to fight.

    Loot:
Aside from Science Weapons and a few armour pieces, you won't find a lot of unique looking pieces of loot.

    The Good:
It's got great RPG elements, you can play however you want. Be it combat-heavy, stealthy, using your silver tongue or by using your brains! (There are even special weapons that get better depending on your Science skill.)

Your choices feel like they actually matter, and in some cases...there doesn't seem to be a right choice. Even a compromise between factions might not make both parties completely happy. At the end of the game, you'll get a narrated slide to see how it all packed out.

Companions: Your companions are all fun and interesting. I feel like some could have used some more depth, but overall taking them around and hearing their banter brought a smile on my face. Plus, they all had some pretty good companion quests too.

    The Setting:
Capitalism gone mad, in space! Overall, everything going on is fairly dark. Yet, it's so over the top and brought in such a way that it goes straight to being funny. I do wish the corporations would have some way of standinng out aside from just different coloured armour, but it's not that big of a deal.

    Verdict:
Although I went into this game expecting the graphics and whatnot, it would be nice if it was improved upon should Obsidian make a sequel or expansion to this game, but it's not a dealbreaker. At least not for me:

The Outer Worlds won't win any beauty prizes, being a RPG does not excuse it from looking bad especially as Witcher 3 is a much older game but still looks great for 2019. Movement feels airy and slow (even when running), your interaction with the environment and objects feels detached as there is no animation when you handle or open objects and worst of all you cannot sit on chairs! Even Fallout games had animations for that! Combat doesn't feel like you're hefting a weapon about, it also feels airy with no feeling of weight behind your melee attacks.

The fact The Outer Worlds has no micro-transactions, is a single player game and isn't made by Bethesda seems to have helped it score brownie points with critics and fans alike. But it feels like Fallout 4.5 rather than it's own game, maybe because Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the creators of the Fallout series, served as the game's directors. Resulting in The Outer Worlds feeling very familiar to the point of being boring.

    - the loot system was trash. Honestly. There were lots of different consumables but only one really mattered. And lots of stuff was only usable for selling. Literally went straight into your junk folder cause it had no use whatsoever. Loot, guns, and armour were kinda boring. -I enjoyed the combat but it was overshadowed by the boring same enemies. They feel like a random fly that you need to sway away so you can continue you normal duties.
    - the exploration is lacking. The outerworlds has an interesting but the worlds are kinda small. I wish it were larger and had more to explore. But I guess they did want it to be so much an open world rpg.
    - a lot of the side quest turn into traveling to do lists. Which gets tiring after a while. I was able to not touch the main quest for hours in fallout new Vegas but in outerworlds you cant really do that.
    - the guns were lacking. Not enough guns to be honest, needs more interesting guns.
    - I wish it was more customizable regarding clothing

    The good.
    - the ability to mod weapons and armour was nice.
    - the dialogue and main story in this are really good. I really enjoyed the companions and was able to connect with them.
    - I read some people talking about this game forcing sjws values and what not but I didnt get any of that. Yea there are a lot of powerful female characters but they are good characters with interesting characteristics. - I enjoyed the art and looks of the game. It was very pretty. Although I constantly had to adjust my brightness cause the contrast in game made it very difficult to see things.
    - I thought the ability to raise the level of guns or clothing that you liked was really cool. Although because theres not that much gun variety you end up running into a better version of you gun, and theres no special gun that I felt needed to be updated with my level. Same with armour.

On a last note this game was too short. My first play through I was able to blitz right through it in less than a few days. But on my second play through I turned off all subtitles and slowed down. And I have to say it's been much more enjoyable that way. It was a good game but there is a lot to do to make it a great game. And I believe obsidian has the potential to make a greater outerworlds game. If they do make a second one I hope they listen to the more negative reviews and improve in the game.

Finally, a Fallout-killing experience! I haven’t purchased a Fallout since 4, even skipping New Vegas, and I thankfully was spared the trash heap that is 76. Outer Worlds is a bit too short and the anti-capitalism silliness is a bit too much for me, so that’s why it’s an 8/10. Still, one of the best games in this genre I’ve played in a while.

No hacking/lockpicking minigame was kind of disapointing.
Weapons are very limited and vary in power only by levelgaps, like lvl 15 weapons are all the same power, then lvl 18 is the next step up and so on. Weapons overall feel quite good, but lacking in power, or atleast power scaling.

I don't even know wether there are any romance options in this game since the one I was interested in went for another npc, that was unexpected.

Very limited crew BUT in turn you can have 2 crewmembers active and following at the same time, so thats sort of a plus and minus.

Characters overall are relatively good, but you're just not compelled to interact with too many of them, not even your crew. Its definitely not at the level of character design and intrigue as fallout 3/nv.

The TTD which is essentially the new version of VATS was exceptionally disapointing for me and I found it completely useless.

Story is overall very interesting and is inviting, but not enough is explained about the backstory of humanity, potentially to save that up for a sequel, but it felt like nothing was really explained. Or not enough atleast.

All in all I had fun playing through it, but the world and its people felt a little too empty and uninviting. I definitely enjoyed FO3 alot more.

I usually hate Fallout style games, and ive been boycotting any Bethesda game for a long time, but Outer Worlds is something else entirely. Its just a good game.

A damn good RPG. Bethesda is obsolete with this game's launch, as they are incapable of doing RPGs as good as Obsidian.

Great gameplay, amazing locations, absolutely *stellar* writing, this game had me hooked from the very beginning and didn't let go until the very end. Only real gripes I have about it is that it's kind of short and the individual level areas are kind of small.

Only real gripes I have about it is that it's kind of short and the individual level areas are kind of small.

Even with a fair amount of sidequesting and hitting the level cap with the final mission, I clocked in maybe 20 hours, which in terms of most RPGs I've played is a little on the short side. But being a bit short can be just fine when the package we have is so well done, I feel like if it ran on for too long it'd eventually run out of ideas. Even so, I would've really liked to spend more time in The Outer Worlds.

Additionally there are only like 5 areas in the game and all but one of them is pretty small, and not dense enough to justify it. I would've liked bigger open world areas or just a single massive map which would've helped the feeling of exploration. As it is, the game offers tons of roleplaying opportunities, but the story itself is somewhat linear.

Looking forward to inevitable DLC, hopefully of the Broken Steel variety so I can level up more and get cooler guns.

Hot damn this is great. A little repetitive if you are a grinder like me. i wish that there were some small changes like 3rd person perspective or keeping your gun holstered when talkin to folks but thats just me. If youre on XBL you can literally play this for like 2 dollars with the pass think fast

Edit: the pass will go back up to 14 a month take advantage

I really want to see Obsidian go further. The Outer Worlds was a fantastic breath of fresh air. No microtransactions no nonsense. The writing was hilarious and the exploration was thrilling. The only gripe I have is that the combat was a little repetitive.

The main story itself is pretty good, your actions have a lot of interesting consequences and the main quest itself is engaging. The story takes you to memorable places and lets you decide on your own how you want to deal with the situation without holding your hand too much. There are plenty of skill checks and dialogue options that make it seem like your character choices matter. Graphics are ok (there are some stuttering issues in some of the towns) and the game is mostly bug free. The crafting is really basic and boring, you are only allowed to install a limited amount of armor and weapon mods and improve them using money. The combat in this game is also very simple and repetitive, just shoot the weakspots and go slow-mo when you're in trouble.Companions are another weak spot. The reasons for your companions joining you are very weak and most of their side missions seem really dull and skippable. Character progression doesn't feel as fleshed out as it should be either, none of the perks are interesting and all your left with is allocating 10 skill points per level.

This game is like a smaller scale Fallout New Vegas without the fallout. Grab it on sale if you enjoyed New Vegas

Obsidian did Kotor 2 and Fallout New Vegas both of which are in my all time top 20 games ( if I had such a list ). This is very much in the same category as those games or other RPG's like Fallout, Mass Effect, Witcher, Skyrim Etc. At launch I experienced no bugs, had a lot of fun, and feel like this is a pretty solid game launch. Kotor 2 and Fallout New Vegas both had some bugs well into the life of those games but so far I have not had any issues after 30 hours of play. I feel like that's not mentioned enough. On top of the Fallout in Space theme that this game looks like on paper It also has tons of references to Sci Fi culture in general. Firefly, Star Wars, Buck Rogers. In fact Buck Rogers is very similar to how this game starts funny enough. 99% of people reading this have no idea what that is. Probably 99% of gamers will never play this game though. Its not a game made for the masses. its made for the 1% of the population that gets its and does a great job satisfying that 1%. Thanks to Obsidian for making it! Expand

I would say 8.5 but they dont do half points so I rounded up and gave it a 9 overall because of the great time I had playing through it. I really want to like this. Pretty scenery, enjoyable enough story for a while. But honestly the worst combat I've seen in a game for a while. Completely ruined any immersion for me. It's incredibly, incredibly tedious in every battle. Both you and enemy are bullet sponges who don't react at all to being hit, it's just standing with both feet rooted to the floor firing back at each other.I really want to like this. What probably best summarizes The Outer Worlds is that, in spite of my qualms with aspects of it, I still enjoyed my time playing it. It doesn’t overstay its welcome and by the fills a void that feels wider in the wake of many larger western studios losing interest in making dedicated RPG experiences. It’s not the kind of game to stand the test of time and Obsidian has made much better and more interesting games in the past, but there is a pleasant experience to be had. For those looking for that style of single-player RPG will find a lot to like and could do a lot worse.

I can see that while I play, The Outer Worlds is everything needed and expected from a first-person RPG, one that can then be expanded on in the future, with innovative systems, original worlds, and unexpected characters - they now have a hub to fit into. The problem for players is: why play this game instead of waiting for the one that fully escapes the shadow of Fallout?

The Outer Worlds is the Bethesda RPG you always wanted, but it's not made by Bethesda. This is one of the finest RPG experiences that let you take complete control of your storyline, and it's one hell of a ride.
