It's a good game, for sure, but also lacking in a few key areas. I did appreciate some refreshingly well-written dialogue and how the game allowed me to make meaningful decisions in quests. The weapons system was also really neat, namely the different damage types, mods, and tinkering.

On the other hand, one of The Outer Worlds' weaknesses is its scope. The main questline is fairly short, and the various "worlds" are pretty small in size. Even side-arcs like the MSI-Iconoclast plot come to an end too quickly. Also, unlike Fallout: New Vegas, for example, the overall conflict here is too black and white. The Board is clearly made out to be the "bad" guys, while Phineas is the good-natured scientist hoping to save everyone. I didn't really feel conflicted during my playthrough, which was disappointing.

At the end of the day, I had a fun time playing this game, although I feel it could've been so much better still.

This is a proper action RPG game with fantastic retro-futuristic setup. If you like Fallout or even Mass Effect, give it a try if you can buy it with discount. I just personally feel like this game gets all of its good reviews from people who loved Fallout New Vegas and also on the hate train of Fallout 76 and FO4. This game is empty, lacks entertaining game play, exploration is actually very limited and it was simply over hyped for no reason.

Player choice is key and the game revolves around this. It reminds me of other games like Prey and Deus Ex where you have smaller and more contained open worlds but a lot more decisions to actually make within these "smaller" worlds. Player customization is pretty good and you can pretty much figure out a solution to any problem based on your character build. It's not all about just shooting. However, the shooting ain't bad either with quite a few weapon types available. Plus melee is an option too. Also, the game gives real consequences to your actions, more in line with old school RPGs from the 90s, like Fallout 1 and 2.They hit it out of the park in the game play department.

Still, I really can't stand these graphics. Whoever chose the color palette didn't really do a good job. Objects all kind of blend in. It's seriously hard to make out where things are sometimes. On top of that there random neon lights and colors here and there that are just out of place. You'll have a sea of drab and then one bright neon object drowning everything out. Nighttime sucks, I can't see a damn thing! Player models are also like from last generation. What saves it all though is the dialogue and voice acting, which is all pretty good.

Got give the developers a pass for that though, because they are a small team with a small budget, and they managed to outperform most AAA developers this year. It's a great accomplishment and big lesson to these AAA developers who keep churning out absolute garbage year after year. I would say if you were disappointed by the last Mass Effect, this game can fill your space adventure void. I did not regret picking it up despite it's few flaws. Game-play trumps everything else.

Really terrible combat, poorly designed environments, abysmal crafting mechanics. As for the supposedly good dialogues, I mean, OMG, how is this stuff any good? I couldn't care less about any of the NPCs, they were simply super dull and uninteresting. The dark humor tries too much, too hard, and falls flat, becoming ultra repetitive early in the game. People compare it to Fallout New Vegas, but for me there is simply no comparison at all, on any level. FNW had hugely better combat, better characters, a better setting that was still ironic, without cranking it to 11, and a story I cared about. KOTOR 2 was an incredible RPG, with storytelling moments that sent shivers down my spine. This looks like a third grader effort, in comparison.
Finally, male NPCs are a bunch of rock-stupid and corrupt morons, while most females are powerful, competent and compassionate. There are very few exceptions to this rule.

I could probably see some appeal as the main story seemed like something different but like all games like these the side quest "game fillers" you feel compelled to do to "level up" ruin the experience especially the ones in this game. The multiple small maps ruin the exploration like in Fallout and the loading screens between areas were longer than I would like. Outer Worlds is an extremely fun and unique experience. The world building is fantastic of this game, the dialogue is great, and combat is fun. The biggest strength of this game, is the writing and finding all the terminals. The biggest weakness is how safe Oblivion played it and how close to the vest they played. They didn't venture out, it feels like a re-skin of New Vegas.

Biggest gripe I have, is the game feels so lacking of quests. My first playthrough, I was able to grab (to my knowledge) almost every single quest leading to the end of the day and some of them, finally went to me just having to fast travel and go to load screen to load screen and running from planets. Another complaint, is the difficulty of the game. This is one of the easiest games I've played in quite some time, even on the hardest difficulty. Mix that with the modding system, which never really felt that impactful, feels abit like a letdown.

Graphics wise, the game was fantastic. Virtually experienced 0 bugs or if it was, it was minor visual bugs. The customization in the game, is fantastic for your character and for the skill system. You can make a stealthy, assassin who snipes people and hacks and picks locks or a swavy gun slinger.

The choice system in the game, makes me want to play the game again and experience the choices that could have happened.

All in all, the games very good, be it abit so safe. Its above average, but just more of what you expect with a new skin.

The load times on this game are noticeable, the color palette of the graphics goes from colourful to gloomy in a unique way. For me I found the game to be too much of a fetchquest. I really never felt any tension in this game and I think that is it's main problem being a little too focused on making you go here and there and back. Seems more like a casual time waster than anything. That said it does have different difficulty settings and the ability to invite party members with you or go solo. The party members can be customized and coupled with the difficulty and being software bug free I do see a lot of value in replaying the game. Seems to be many quest and dialog options. Despite being a solid game though I'm just not being pulled in. The game is kind of an amalgamation of other successful games and it does suffer from not having its own identity but rather refamiliarizing you with memories of all your past favourite games. On one hand that's great this game is streamlined to have all the key elements of many games but on the downside it's also "been there, done that" too. Pretty much a sell out design but that also means it's probably worth your money whether you buy now at full price or later down the road in the bargain bins whenever that time hits it should probably be a game to at minimum try. As some other reviewers have stated, it isn't a product of the sum of it's parts. Mediocre, would be the word I'd use to describe it if you look at it in it's entirety with an objective lense. Combat is a drag to get through with the bullet sponge enemies, making in-game money is a chore and the price of items are hyper inflated, upgraded weapons are made obsolete past level 15 when they introduce tier 2 weapons, there's a lack of variety when it comes to armor and weapons, and most of the time the narrative and dialogue borders on cringe (and not that witty humor Obsidian is inexplicably known for).

This game is the Ready Player One of video games. A "just OK" game that wouldn't be able to stand on its two legs without the sheer amount of fabricated nostalgia hits, and pop culture references. The fact that you see some people compare it to the early Fallout games leads me to believe that they've never played a Fallout game in their life. Obsidian has proved with this title that they should stick to creating games using other people's properties.

i'm being lead to believe this game is a social experiment, one made to see how far they can take a mediocre game based solely on the reputation of the dev team, because GotY nominee this game is not.

This game as not as good as the ratings suggest. It is an okay game. A poor man's fallout (all the crappy bugs and glitches included). Long load screens are frequent and the stories and quests are not great. Just a very mediocre game. As much as fallout 4 was a disappointment compared to fallout 3, it was a much better game than this.

Bloated items that aren't neccesary/ have the same effects.

I enjoyed this game. It took me 20-25 hours to finish while doing a little bit of everything. And while the gunplay is bad and generic (it feels like is has no weight or impact); the majority of the fun I had here was to manipulate npc's through dialogue. i basically enjoyed this game most for it's main storyline and dialogue options. There are some low-key hilarious dialogue options and moments in this game. I also want to add in that it also seems like your actions don't have a lot of consequences in this game, the majority of people will have the same "ending", with a few slides changing here and there. It's a short rpg, but I definately reccomend it.

Very fun game to play but there is a huge problem with the amount of content here.
I breezed through the whole story and ALL side missions in a couple of sittings.
I am utterly disappointed with the amount of content they give us for this price.
That being said, the graphics are good, the gameplay is fun and the sound is decent.
All in all, great game but WAY too short. :-(

A noticeable aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed were the companions you can recruit to your ship as the game goes on. They're all very well written and likeable characters that you want to give equal attention to as you play. If I have to criticise, my main niggle would be that the game seemed very easy - as I rarely had a challenge after four of five hours into the game. Overall, this is one of the best games I've played this year and I'd happily recommend it to lovers of RPGs.

also the consumable system in this game is convoluted im not that high of a level and i own an entire supermarket OK obsidian i know you want your game to be stylized with content but i never find myself using these at a constant rate compared to how frequent i find these items

my next point. pristine items are pointless. they weren't given much effort to them, all they are normal weapons with more durability and price value.
    no special abilities
    not anything different in looks

also can someone tell me why they made the character creation very detailed and specific but in the actual game you can't have the option of 3rd person

stealth is really bad in this game, no matter the approach you take to killing a guy after you hit him enemies get alerted no matter what you cant chain kill and theres no point in meleeing, you cant do stealth with guns either since there are no silencers

however apart from all these the game is very fun just wish it would be more detailed, story is good, quests are varied, gunplay feels great, companions are interesting and it is one of the best rpgs that have come out lately. the dialogue is definitely the best part of the game. your choice its better than fifa

Probably my expectations were too high, but you know, lesson is learned.

When I knew that that a new Obsidian game is going to be released, I was confident that Feargus Urquhart, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky can't go wrong. These are the people, who were behind legendary Black Isle that brought us Fallout/Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and later as Troika games Tim and Leonard (with Jason D. Anderson) brought to life Arcanum and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. So you get the idea of who are these people. I grew up playing that classic and still consider Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate series to be the pinnacle of RPG genre. Later, after Black Isle disband I was so glad when Obsidian Entertainment was created and with their first title - Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic II (KOTORII) I had a feeling that these grand maestros will be doing great games once again. With Tim and Leonard joining Obsidian, I was expecting a full power return of the kings.

Well, I guess I was a bit unrealistic. So where to start. I can imagine the pre-production meetings where publisher would demand some sort of "Bethesda killer" or just the research from the marketing department saying that the target audience should be a console-orientated FPS younger players.

And here we get the product - neither RPG (in the way I see it), neither FPS.

Don't get me wrong - a lot of love and efforts were put into project - design, story, plot. It's all worked through. But when brought together - it's just not as fun as it could be. I could definitely see the the main references here - Borderlands, Bethesda's Fallout, Bioshock and Mass Effect. You literally see and feel the insights from Arcanum, Bloodlines and KOTOR II as well. But as I said - it's not as dynamic as Borderland to be enjoyable as a shooter, as pace and combats are not that intense. Too much messing around with items, which was fun in Borderlands (since it was a parody of MMORPG item-mania with color coding, random drop, etc).

I felt myself like a kleptomaniac. Haven't been like that since Morrowind, but back then you could grab literally any item, here you are stuck with repetitive items to grab. Mechanics are going to be like that: run around, get all the quests, follow markers, kill enemies, loot everything. Loot more while looking around, then go back, while looting more junk. Get rewards, sell everything. Repeat on a different planet. Repeat. The end. Reminded me World of Warcraft from 15 years ago.

Speaking of that - the choice of cartoonish design also reminded me WoW. Overall design idea is interesting - kind of sci-fi Art Nouveau (Modern of 1900s beginning), but it's really sad to see a lot of interesting models, architecture and item design that are just being repeated and pasted over and over again. All these levels are just empty. You walk around nicely designed surrounding that are just empty. All those bottles, food and posters are like an empty spectacle. You find deserted forsaken labs and bases, but they are all shiny and neat, with fresh dead bodies. And you have to believe that it's been there for years. And again - more of same stuff around. Literally 80% of the game is looting. I wish they would do "Grab All" button.

I feel like that game shows the crisis of the industry. Bethesda actually raised a whole generation of bad taste gaming. In my opinion Obsidian should stick to what they are known for - real RPGs, I feel like KOTOR (kind like bioware'ish) or Pillars of Eternity approach would benefit the game, but it will not benefit the sales, so again - it's business after all.

Dialogs are dull in 90%, there are couple interesting moments, especially with your team members, but then again - if you played original Fallout, Arcanum and Planescape or KOTORII, nothing would suprise you.

Honestly I've beaten the game mostly because of the story, and because of the team behind the game - I just wanted to see the whole thing to make my own opinion. But after first day I was so disappointed that even was thinking about returning the game. Unfortunately I didn't get the fun I got from FPS games with slight RPG elements (Borderlands, FarCry5), nor the true RPG enjoyment (Arcanum, KOTOR).

I feel there are very important game design requirements for each of this genres, and to blend them together is not an easy task. Obsidian took shortcuts and it didn't work out, at least for me. For people, who never have seen any of older titles, and who consider Fallout 3/4 and other Bethesda latest titles to be OK, this game would be a revelation. Surely it beats any of that Bethesda crap. But if you are into computer games since 90s - be prepared to have these frustration moments.

There are some minor engine related stuff I find odd as well - blurry textures, drawing distance through sniper scopes, weird physics (jumping, invisible walls, e

Ever since the previous disappointing release of Fallout 76 the demand for Obsidian Entertainment to make another Fallout game has increased, but without the rights to the Fallout series they would never be allowed to do it without Bethesda’s permission and so Outer Worlds was born.

Outer worlds can not be called a copy of any of the Fallout games since it's so distinct from what the Fallout games used to be and what they are now. One of the many good things this game has in it is the RPG elements that it borrows from Fallout: New Vegas. A lot of games call themselves RPGs but lack the core elements that make an RPG you know...AN RPG. Outer Worlds may not revolutionize what an RPG is but it certainly does it right. Another fun thing is how you can play Outer Worlds also. There are usually more than one way to complete a mission with there always being a go in and shoot everything route or you can sneak in Lie, Persuade, Intimidate, or use your vast knowledge in Medicine, Engineering, or Science to convince your way past many enemies or to get more rewards from quests you completed. Finally, the biggest element that I loved about Outer Worlds is how it brings you into its world and invests you into it and its characters. All of the companions your bring along with you along the adventure you take in Outer Worlds all have their separate character quests that decide the type of ending you are going to get. Not only that but the numerous quests filled throughout the game also has an effect on the ending, depending if you resolved an issue with your guns or charm can have a major role in the ending you get with the final cutscene in the ending paying homage to Fallout:New Vegas.(Also in game they call you the mysterious stranger in reference to the mysterious stranger seen or mentioned in Fallout Games and I loved it)

Ok so now that we have some of the positives we have to go through some of the negatives, sorry Outer Worlds you’re not perfect as much as I hate to admit it. One of the blaring issues that you get to in the mid to late game is the lack of variety of weapons and armor. I think that the weapons and armor it does have in game are really fun to look at, and appealing to shoot/wear for guns and armor but I feel if there was just a bit more variety then I would have nothing to complain about. Another issue is how short the game actually is and feels in the last couple of missions almost rushing you through the story when it feels like there should be more. More than likely they will be adding DLC later down the road since there are a few couple of planets locked from you exploring so hopefully that resolves the issue but right now I can’t help but feel a longing for more content. The final issue I will be bringing up are the worlds you explore, they are very small. For having an entire planet to explore the world you are able to explore just feel way too small. This might have been done to save FPS or maybe they just preferred it but I think if they are going to give you multiple whole entire planets to explore then I want to explore more than just one region with only a couple cities smacked in em. Honestly if you just mashed all of the regions you can explore into one big planet and region it would have been better to show all the different climates that way instead of one planet being strictly just Jungle, or Tundra, or Desert just to give examples.

In conclusion Outer Worlds is a very good game and a game that gamers have been wanting from Obsidian for a very long time and so to be honest I am very happy just to be able to enjoy it. It is not a perfect game but I can confidently say that the price of the game is well worth the content that you will enjoy.

A great RPG game. The best part is definitely the dialogues, characters and the story and quests. You feel like you have some real choices to make and you can pick which side you want to align yourself with. There are some problems too. Mainly, the combat in the game never really feels satisfying. Its serviceable, but not good. Most of the bad guys feel quite generic and it kind of feels like the animations are not that great. The weapons are boring too. Some of the level designs can feel a bit bland sometimes too, there are no real "wow" moments when walking around.

But in the end, that is not what makes a great RPG in my opinion but rather the dialogs and quests, which feels important and that lets you decide how you want things to evolve.

If Mass Effect was "Start Trek: The Game", Outer Worlds is "Firefly: The Game". Lower budget, lower stakes, but still fun. It's definitely better than anything Bethesda has released in the past few years, but it's no masterpiece. The game is packed with unnecessary systems that are only there because other games have them and fans would be disappointed if they were missing, but offer nothing to the game. The writing is the biggest selling point of the game (the combat definitely isn't) and although NPCs offer somewhat interesting conversations, the majority of the quests are simple fetch quests with no twists, many being extremely disappointing. As an example, there is a side quest that involves you finding a murder scene. A murder mystery! Awesome! Time to investigate! You immediately find a clue, you ask someone about it and immediately they tell you who the killer is. You confront them, end of quest. No intrigue, no interrogations, no twists. So much wasted potential. Your companions, save for one or two, also suffer the same problem, with their storylines being extremely dull and short. The worlds you explore are well made, though divided by long loading screens, and overall the game was engaging enough for me to complete the main quest, but I still had the nagging feeling that it could've been so much better. Colors and graphic of the game is as well pretty strange, but this wasn't that crucial. Leveling is pretty stupid and boring. I just level everything to 50 and never understand what has actually change for me in the game except opening new options in dialogs. Perks are absolutely useless. I don't understand purpose of phobias as well... neither perk point was needed, nor phobia is actually giving you some change to gameplay at all. All conversations was absolutely boring for me. Story was another level of stupidity honestly. Even Souls like games has better story than this. The best in the game was that it is extremely short in general: 4-5 story missions and thats all. Everything else are sidequest. The best thing in the game was to see final scripts. So I completed it for 10-15 hours fortunately and I can forget about that. My advice would be to not buy this prior it come to big sale. Expand

There is no romance however you can help some characters hookup with one another (not with you obviously, you're kinda stuck in the friendzone lol). Story was okay not great, not bad, but there is some replayablity over which faction you side with. Last aspect I wanna talk about is that the game runs very well and its optimzied to run smoothly on older systems. Expand

This is a good game, but it's not as good as Fallout: New Vegas. It has all of the right characteristics of a well-made RPG.

The game is good, well-developed, has funny dialogs. But it seems that I just didn't like it. The game is very similar to Fallout 4, although it shouldn't be such. The graphics could be better - RDR2 graphics much better. I think if there weren’t so much hype around this game it would be better if I played without anticipation. I have mixed feelings.

Went into the game expecting mediocre. Glad i didn't listen to mixed reviews. This game is awesome. The gunplay is great, speeches with NPCs are awesome, teammates are great. Obsidian , you did it again. Hoping for a sequel. The only thing that i didn't like are the graphics. What about the graphics you say ? the grass, flowers and trees are too neon.

Even “The Outer Worlds” sounds like another way of saying “Borderlands”. Was it intentional? The gameplay is more like Fallout, of course. Anyway, there are a few reasons it’s not a 9 or 10: The corporations thing is a bit overdone. It often tries and fails miserably at being funny, but not enough to spoil the game. They could have toned that down a bit and still been quirky or whatever. Another thing is the Unreal engine, which is ancient and at times obvious, particularly with character models. It also effects world size, and other tech limitations. Lastly, some things just look cheap and not well thought out, like “holographic” signage used on walls that is boring and repeated everywhere. There should be more pretty lights and artwork. The game just doesn’t convey a theme as well as Fallout does. It’s a bit inconsistent or lacking at times. Overall though, it’s a new franchise that is off to a good start, a solid and fair 8.5 (which is great!) and I will be looking forward to playing the outer worlds two on PS5! Expand

The enviornment design is brilliant and gunplay feels more responsive and FPS-like than any other RPG shooter I've played, so you actualy have the feeling of playing shooter rather than RPG-style statistic-oriented combat mechanic.
It shows that Obsidian can make great stories, characters and interesting worlds, however the actual gameplay framework everything is set on didn't deliver.

What probably best summarizes The Outer Worlds is that, in spite of my qualms with aspects of it, I still enjoyed my time playing it. It doesn’t overstay its welcome and by the fills a void that feels wider in the wake of many larger western studios losing interest in making dedicated RPG experiences. It’s not the kind of game to stand the test of time and Obsidian has made much better and more interesting games in the past, but there is a pleasant experience to be had. For those looking for that style of single-player RPG will find a lot to like and could do a lot worse.

I can see that while I play, The Outer Worlds is everything needed and expected from a first-person RPG, one that can then be expanded on in the future, with innovative systems, original worlds, and unexpected characters - they now have a hub to fit into. The problem for players is: why play this game instead of waiting for the one that fully escapes the shadow of Fallout?

The Outer Worlds is the Bethesda RPG you always wanted, but it's not made by Bethesda. This is one of the finest RPG experiences that let you take complete control of your storyline, and it's one hell of a ride.
