The game shattered my expectations. It took a big risk in the story that it tells and for me it was an absolute win. The game play was also a perfect mix of the original Last of Us and Uncharted 4. If you loved the 1st one the least you can do is ignore the haters and give Part II the chance it deserves.

However, it becomes a true hymn only for the second part, a match that gives you goosebumps. The new game “hurts us”, it “lets us down”, and even makes some of us “go away in the end”. And even if we could give it a chance to “start again”, the story “would keep itself” in spite of everything. The latter, I believe, is what makes The Last of Us Part II iconic.

Playing this game is a challenge, a fight we are destined to lose. As if standing on a ring with Naughty Dog, we are knocked down by the very first blow. Those of us, who strive to continue, will get hurt again and not once. Of course, this isn’t something we are used to as players. After all, what we love most about video games is the feeling of pleasure they give us. In response, the gaming industry has always focused on players and their needs, by producing games of different genres and styles, in order to bestow us this feeling. The Last of Us Part II is the first game, in my experience, which is not created for the player. It is created for the characters.

Seven years have passed, since we learnt the story of Joel and Ellie. And as in any great story, once it ends, the characters have it all to move on without their writers’ intervention. The idea of Neil Druckmann and the Co. was to give them an opportunity to live their lives by themselves. A respectful decision, yet a cruel one – not for the characters, but the players. The new game destroys all our expectations with respect to the story right in the beginning, and it does so ruthlessly. Moreover, it makes us do things we find brute, pointless and even mocking. It is tempting, in a fit of rage and despair, to blame the developers’ team in making a failure of a story, but… is it really their story?

No matter how terrifying it may sound, I truly believe that the narrative of The Last of Us Part II is the only possible continuation of a story that took off in the first part. Despite all the love we have for Joel and Ellie, they are still ordinary humans, whose decisions must have consequences. We can criticise Neil Druckmann for the chosen order of events, but, sooner or later, they would have happened anyway. It is much more important that he doesn’t make up a story, but puts the characters in a genuine environment crafted by their deeds, which allows them to be authentic. The question then is why do we need to have a game, which is created for the characters rather than us? Well, whatever we think of it, the new story is a brilliantly presented work of art, which can teach us many things.

It is not merely a revenge recital, as some of us complain – it is also a story of how important it is to stop at the right time. It is a story of forgiveness and being unable to forgive; a story of how frightening the PTSD effects are, especially in a world where love and peace are so precious and rare; a story of growing up being already an adult… Such attention to the narrative is not caused by the lack of technical virtues, but their utmost excellence. It wouldn’t be a Naughty Dog game, if the directing, music and acting weren’t so magnificent, while the gameplay really amazes with its meticulous attention to details, and live action fights.

In the end, the new game allows to dive into unimaginable depths of The Last of Us world as it is: dark, scary, and immensely sad. The only way to accept this story is, perhaps, to let the pain in. If in the first part we are united with Joel and Ellie by hope, in the second part we share a common trauma – a bond of far greater power.

It's an incredible piece of art and in my opinion the standard which story based games should aspire to. People really need to tap into their empathy and reflect on the game before trashing it.

I think the main issue is the order in which events are presented to the player, but this is also used a literary device to illicit a certain reaction.

After finishing this game it took me over a week to really process it and realize the ending is inherently device and you reaction to it is the result of your emotional maturity.

Abby seems like a boring, lazy character because you introduced to are forced to see the world through her eyes after seeing her commit this horrific act of violence. It is a natural reaction to be uninterested in her past.

But the reality is that Abby is a deep, authentic character with her own motivations and experiences and traumas and a failure to recognize this is the result of people being incapable of, or refusing to understand another person's world view.

The world of TLOU is one without heroes, and many people have incorrectly categorized the characters from the first game as such. Being able to separate reality vs. expectations is critical in understanding the nuances of this games story.

Also the gameplay is **** fantastic. its an amalgamation of the best of Uncharted 4 with a heavily overhauled TLOU inventory/crafting system.

On a side note, Trans rights are Human Rights and if you gave this game a bad review because 'trans boy' you can get ****

Plays great, looks great, that much is a given
The only gripe I slightly have is the ending, it is good enough, but it could have used something more conclusive in my opinion. But I have warmed up significantly to it over time, and it is a very minor gripe. This is my current game of the year, (Not counting Fallen Order which was screwed over by coming out late last year)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So… I’ve finished the last of us part II today…. The game is a freaking masterpiece! Once again ND teaches how to make a GOTY (for me). And one of the best things for me is that this game shows so much respect to the first game that we loved. Let me start by the graphics there simply the best graphics that you can see in a video game right now… The game play is amazing very improved from the first last of us, I love that they added so much more stuff in the crafting and the exploration part! I loved the idea of semi open world parts that they added to the game. I really like that we can see what Ellie is thinking about everything in her journal. The notes that we find add so much more to the game… The AI has improved a lot since the first game, it’s not perfect but it’s improved! The sounds in the game are simply so realistic and amazing! The music is art, although I would like some more! And last but not least the amazing story! There are no words to describe the story in this masterpiece! The last of us part II it’s not a game… it’s an experience, it’s a feeling, it’s art! It’s the game that leaves you with your mouth open for you only to say what did I just played… All the cut scenes of the game are breathtaking. I hadn’t played the original, so when this game came out decided to play them back to back for a seemless ‘TLOU’ experience. Enough has been said about the gameplay, which is excellent although not much has changed from the original..... it would have been nice for ND to have come up with something other than a nominal ‘jump’ button. Regarding the controversial story, maybe playing the games one after another made the death of Joel easier for me. I hadn’t waited 7 years to see him again, In fact it was about 24 hours after I saw him slaughter some defenceless surgeons and steal Ellie - potentially damning mankind for eternity. For me the first game was excellent - and the second game picked up exactly where that ended. Sure, they may have tried harder for more ‘shock moments’ - but the character building was realistic for a post apocalyptic work of anti-hero’s. My only true criticism of this game is the length. I was fortunate enough to have the time to play through both games in quick succession, but for a casual gamer playing a few hours here and there this would take months.A Also I felt the ending should have given the player the decision as to whether Abby lived or died - similar to Trevor in GTA. A real test as to whether ND had done enough to make the player forgive Abby (I would have killed her for sure)

I’m disappointed that in a few years time, those who don’t know the controversy around this game will see this review score and think this is an average game - because love it or hate it average is certainly not what it is.

Talking about the game itself and not about me, its a goddamn masterpiece in terms of technical stuff; its incredible how good its made that sometimes it seems like ur watching a movie instead of a game. About the story, i really loved how the games plays with ur emotions and if u let it do it you wont regret it cause it makes u question everything that happens in the game and changes ur point of view to the point that u no longer know what u want the story lead to. The only thing a could blame this game is making u play with Abby for so long but it kinda makes sense so u would see her point of view and realise she is not the bad character of the story and Ellie isnt the good one either. Outside of a few pacing issues, this game is *chef's kiss*. People trying to say the story is bad...just because you don't LIKE the story, doesn't make it objectively bad. It's meant to be miserable and devastating. That's literally the point. Stop being so irrationally angry over a video game that you would send death threats to people involved in the making of it.

I heard about the negative reviews and went it with an open mind hoping it would change my view. The opening of the game left me furious and wondering if this is what people were mad about. Then I reached the halfway point and was fuming! The shocker of having to play as the other character left me with a bad taste. I felt that maybe this was the reason people hated the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First time writing a review for a game, and I’m doing because I feel obliged to do so after playing it twice. The way that Naughty Dog gave us a story that nobody expect it, and yet it maintains a brutal reality of the world, especially of a post-apocalyptic one where death does not only come for the “bad guy”, it’s just mind blowing.

The authenticity of the story comes in many forms, such as the typical immaturity on a teenager shown by Ellie, who reproaches Joel for taking away her chance to “matter“, failing to see the love he developed for her as a daughter and that he would have killed the world if necessary for his baby girl to live. But Ellie going to Seattle chasing the WLF members who killed Joel, and even going into a dark path of torturing people to interrogate (different than being violent in self defense for the necessity of survival), shows how much she loves Joel as a father, and how her love turned vindictive by Abby’s actions.

Or how it brings the matter of perspective as how each character could be a good guy when looking from their shoes and their motives when it comes to Abby. She just happened to be like Ellie, a girl who lost the person she loved and admired the most at the hands of a killer (Joel) who had to pay for it.

That story combined with the raw brutality and violence, and how ignorance and cruelty comes into play in the shape of cults and gangs, just make the game the best game I have ever played besides TLOU I. Thank you Naughty Dog for that story. I initially hated that Abby got to survive, but that’s just because I see and sympathized with Joel’s actions (I would murder all the Fireflies again for Ellie to live). I ultimately understand that her father was like who Joel was to Ellie, and that Ellie deciding to forgive her was part of her maturation process, that knowing why Abby came after Joel and seeing a depending Lev on Abby like she was on Joel at some point plus the flashback of Joel, made her at the last second forgive her.

I wanted to play the game myself and see how it is.I had so much hype and when the game finally arrived in my hands I started played with so much hype. Then as the hours was passing and I was reaching the end of the game, I really felt disappointed.

Well no about graphics, mechanisms, details, animations. These are the best out there in my opinion and I didn't expect something less from ND. On this sector they did the best work for real.

My disappointment was because I didn't expect such an off topic story. I expected to see some new missions with Joel and Ellie but most like likely something that it would explain or show what happened / happening about the virus, its evolution or its cure solution. Well nothing from all these happened.

I actually played a game that had to do with so many inaccurate characters according to the part 1 that we never showed them there and everything had to do around them. The most hours of the game it was a gameplay with Abby and not Ellie. Even if the game logo on the dvd package showing the Ellie as the protagonist.

I found Abby's part so boring because I had just to go to a specific location then come back to a previous then again go back to the original and doing such things that didn't make me feel excited at all. It was like I was playing a walking dead tv series in a game. Even the end of the game reminded me so much of the Nigan season.

ND also did something wrong. They nurfed Joel and Tommy that much that I thought it was a joke or a troll to us the fans of the franchise. Joel and Tommy would never mention who they are, from where they are or asking strangers come with them to their camp. That was much accurate to me.

Also we watched 2 official trailers with Joel saving Ellie by covering her mouth plus Ellie playing guitar and saying to Joel he will kill any last of them. Well these scenes never happened in the game. It was probably a marketing to push the sales. Showing Joel alive and kill him just in the first 2 hours like garbage or a movie walkon wasn't that cool.

Also Ellie mentioning to Abby you will **** die, you are dead etc. and in the end nothing of this happens. Just like Rick with Nigan in the final episode that letting him be alive. So the problem here is that this game wasn't prototype at all. Just a copy of a move or tv series. While the first part was from zero to the end a real masterpiece with a great scenario.

Another thing that was not that cool is the animal violation. In first they said you will not be forced to kill a dog but at last there were times you had to. Also killing dogs was only represented while playing as Ellie and from the other side with Abby you were only playing with a dog. That was a trick to make people love more Abby instead of Ellie?

Well after that I felt they just humiliate our intelligence. Anyway. That's it for me and that was my personal opinion of course. Also it's sad to see a director calling his fans with negative characterizations or words like "who **** / cares for the haters"?

And I am not talking about those fake fans that used rude and abusing language against ND or the actors. That's not right. I am talking about the real fans that paid played the game and they had their own opinion that it was different of what nd's director probably expected. Not cool when you talk like that about your customers / fans.

    Peace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the first game more than this one, but I still think it is a great game.

TL;DR: The game gives people a lot of reasons to hate it, but I think if you can push through the feelings some of the game events and features may spark at first, you'll end up enjoying it a lot.

Where most people hated the story, I felt the game did a good job at making me keep going. Whereas some of the characters' actions are not rational at times, they are certainly human. And I think this is what the game excels at, making the characters feel human.

I think "The Death" was a good fit to the story to remind the player of how brutal and unforgiving the Last of Us world is. Once again touching on the subject of humanity, even though gameplay may depict them as superhuman killing machines with infalible instincts, the characters are as mortal and prone to error as any other human being.

Other complaints talk about the game trying to make us see Ellie as the villain, but I never really saw it that way. Sure, she murders a lot of people, but you can clearly see her actions taking a toll on her, even though her desire for revenge keeps her moving forward. By the end of the game, you possibly do not condone of her actions, but it is easy to understand what drives them if you step out of your own shoes and into hers. You want her to be smarter and more rational, but you really can't expect her to be, given all she's been through.

Now, as for the game trying to make you see the villain as a not-so-evil person by making you play as her, I don't think that happened for me either, I found it impossible to sympathize with her, but that didn't make the game or the story less enjoyable for me. In fact, I found her gameplay so engaging, I found myself not caring who I was playing as for most of her storyline. If you are able to ignore your initial disgust from playing as the villain, you can see that this part of the game has incredible level design with a lot of good encounters (including a high-adrenaline boss fight). And even if the game does try to reduce your hatred for this character, you can choose to not do that and simply see this part of the game as the story told from the POV of the villain.

The game does drag on for a little long and at the end you find yourself feeling a bit like the characters, tired and wanting to stop, but with the need to see everything through. Which is why I appreciate the developers keeping the (in my opinion much needed) final chapter somewhat short.

Finally, as for the game pushing for a "political agenda" (not that there is anything wrong with that, in my opinion), I tend to disagree. Ellie is a lesbian (which we already knew from the DLC to the first game) and there is a transgender character. That's about it. I personally don't think it is forced or that it affects the game quality in the slightest.

The game requires you to have an open mind while playing, and if it you do, you'll end up with a beautifully constructed, entrancing world. Gameplay is smooth and epic, and the story is different in almost every way. The main reason people don't like this game is because it isn't the same a part 1, and while it might not be, that doesn't make any less of a masterpiece.

It doesn’t matter if I liked or didn’t like where the story went; I didn’t write it, so it wasn’t up to me to determine. The polish is near-perfect, the gameplay it tight and kept me taught. It's an incredibly intimate piece of literary work, and it needs to be analysed in that way.

Well-written; beautifully nuanced, smart, impactful, hard-to-swallow and thought-provoking; even more so than the first game. Ashley Johnson delivers another powerhouse performance in her work as Ellie. Laura Bailey and Troy Baker too, deserve an abundance of recognition.

I don't think there's an argument to be had that this game, on a technical level, is masterful. The level of detail is off-the-charts incredible; the sheer-quality and craftsmanship on display is unparalleled by anything/everything currently on the market. The gameplay, environments, level design, editing, cinematography, sound mixing and soundtrack/score - beyond fantastic.

If video games weren't already considered an art-form, they are now. The Last of Us Part II is this generation's apex mountain for video games. It's an extremely well-told tale of obsession; balancing themes of hope, humanity, vengeance, violence and acceptance. It's dark and deeply depressing and painful, but it's perfectly poetic and powerful all the more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us is one of the most exciting games i have ever played, and when they announced The Last Of Us Part II back in 2016, i was so excited that i couldn’t wait what’s the next story will be. When I got to finished the The Last Of Us Part II, i was so happy because the hype that i have since the announcement was worth it. Story
The story of The Last Of Us Part II is about revenge and forgiveness, the game is not fun and you will really feel the emotions of the two protagonist. The first half of the game you will play as Ellie, a character who will do whatever it takes to get to her goal, which is to kill Abby. The second half of the game you will play as Abby, a character who will do whatever it takes to help those people she cares about. When i saw Abby killing Joel (In Ellie's perspective), i feel the same way how Ellie felt, i felt anger and sadness, and the same feeling of losing someone you love. (In Abby’s perspective) i understood her, I understood why she killed Joel. Her goal is same like Ellie, getting revenge for killing her dad. I mean let’s be honest here, you would the same thing if you were Abby. ( I don’t really know why people still hate abby after finishing the game, i mean it’s sad to know that Joel is dead but if you were Abby you would do the same thing right?)

Throughout the first half of the game, i really feel angry and the urge to kill abby, and during the second half, i felt sad of what the two protagonist have become. I was kinda surprised because i never felt this kind of emotions whenever i play video games. Playing this game really feels like you’re in a roller coaster, there are ups and downs.

    Gameplay
The new mechanics of The Last Of Us Part II is one of the most unique things i have ever seen. The game feature a new dodge mechanic which allows you to dodge enemy attacks. You can also go prone so you can hide from your enemies or try to find another ways to kill your opponents and many more. Playing this game with these new mechanics really feels fresh and intense. The enemies of The Last Of Us Part II are quite challenging, the game has improved so much, the AI of this game is so much better than the first game because they act more realistic. There are also a new enemy type like the dog and other human enemies. Let’s not forget the enemies that made The Last Of Us amazing, The Cordyceps. The Cordyceps are more dangerous than ever, the runners are more agile, the clickers are more aggressive, the stalkers are much more quiet, and the bloaters is much more dangerous than the first game. We also get to see two new enemy types like the shambler and the rat king which are challenging to kill. I am so happy that naughty dog really improved the combat and made other mechanics, i can feel that they really work hard to make this game unique and special than the first game.

Conclusion The Last Of Us Part II is the most unique game i have ever played, From it’s story up to to it’s gameplay you can really feel the effort that the crew made. I’m so excited what naughty dog has in store for us. This is my favourite game.

And I see the game as a masterpiece consisting of both games and not each part on its own. For me, the characters, the story, the character development, the atmosphere, brutality, music and sound effects and graphics of this game were really the best I have ever played in my life. Of course I get why many fand are disappointed about the first part of the story - of course it killed me as well and was like: for real? Now I have to play Abby for hours and hours? All I want to do is kill ber and take revenge. But somehow ND managed it to make her appeal like a good human bei g so in the end I really didn‘t want Elli to kill her. Also ND showed us that pure revenge is destroying more than it gives you even if you feel facilitated for 3 secs. I understand it was a shocking experience cause lots of people cannot simply accept this setting, let along with the fact that people who are indulgent in the gaming world have more or less some mental issues so they tend to seek fun by massive killing in the virtual world. Mostly importantly, TLOU2 is the first game ever in history which has genuinely placed female protagonists at the center stage. You have no idea how much we love Ellie, Dina, and even Abby! I enjoyed the game, I thought the story was solid, and I think it was a worthy successor to TLOU. I think everyone wanted a game where you keep playing as Joel and Ellie and continue on their story. They decided to throw things on their head by making you play half the game as the person you are trying to get revenge on for killing Joel. I wound up liking Abby and I thought her crew was ok. I do think there were too many characters overall in the game. The gameplay was fun, though having one open world section like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and then the rest be linear was an odd choice.

I also found this game to not be as creepy or as scary as the first game, the enemies felt less threatening, maybe because as Ellie you had a knife the whole.

Motion capture, graphics, and voice acting were absolutely amazing.

Overall I think people were mad the game wasn't made how they wanted it. Its not amazing like the first game but it's a solid sequel. Then again I kind of liked Uncharted 3 more than 2 so maybe I'm the problem.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm about 15 hours into the game, so far despite all the negative reviews and comments I read before, i have been enjoying the game so much and I find myself wanting to play more whenever possible. People are saying they hate the story and the image of the new character Abby, I find nothing controversial at all. Don't like the physique of Abby? Go to a gym! Don't like Ellie's sex preference? Well have you been living in a cave? Don't like Joel getting killed? If you played TLOU 1, he did make the tough choice to sacrifice everyone to save his new "baby girl", and he was simply paying for what he did. Don't get me wrong. I love the character of Joel, but it's the story told by Naughty Dog, and I find this nothing wrong at all.

Of course one can hate this story, but so far I do not find many things that cannot be explained and justified. There were some areas where one may find the story a bit weird, like Yara is okay to have all her Scar friends slaughtered by Abby when they are together, and Abby killing her WLF friends without a wink, but other than these, so far I have been loving the story telling of Naughty Dog. The story is heavy and sad, but not all stories are meant to be happy and bright.

If you simply expect the very standard story controlling the old characters and kill everyone, this is not for you. But if you have an open mind, this game is a classic and cannot be missed. I can only say Naughty Dog's story telling is superb, even better than the previous generation.

This game is AMAZING!!!!! I REALLY LIKED IT! I've never been so inspired by a game. There are a lot of emotions in this game. I was worried about every character. Naughty Dog, thank you so much for playing. I will hope to continue.

Never before have I felt so many conflicting emotions while playing a game. I'm still thinking about the story weeks after playing this game. A story you must experience!

One of the worst and most disappointing games ever made in video game history. The story is garbage, the characters are terrible and the ending was not satisfying.

Easily worse sequel than "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" (1997), so gratz to whole team who made this game. You did it. You actually managed to make worse sequel than "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" (1997).

Awful story, awful unlikable characters, ruins first game completely, there's nothing left in this series lol. I honestly can't believe how stupid Ellie is in this game. I have never met woman so dumb in real life.

I usually could care less about reviews here, but this one made me literally laugh because of how stupid it is. It seems you really believe that meaning of life is dating a woman and when you date a woman then all your problems go away and you become completely different person lol. You serious? You really think that when someone dates with woman then he somehow starts to get more about lesbian relationships in video games? It doesn't even make sense. Like where's the connection between these two things? You are also assuming that only men hate this game and that's not true at all. Women hate this game equally and even real Lesbians hate this game, because of how much negativity this one game has brought to them. They would like to live their normal lives, but games like last of us part II are doing everything to make people dislike them. Also i can't believe you come on with this stereotypical "oh you must be too ugly to date someone", pure irony considering that Abby is one of the ugliest women in video game history. Also, acting like dating some woman must be goal of your life is just pathetic honestly. I have never had any issues with women and i'm in relationship right now, but there were years when i just wanted to be alone and just feel free, hang out, date different people etc. Some people even enjoy to be alone. So i'm obviously not caring about your statement, i'm just pointing out pure hypocrisy, because i know personally people (both men and women) who as of right now in their life, could care less about dating someone. They have way bigger goals in their life. They don't even have time for stuff like that. So it's just hilarious to me that you make so big deal out of dating a woman and how this must be somehow connected to hating this game. Expand

I mean I’m pretty liberal, and the story in this game is just pure trash. Everything is just so bleak, with no influential moments like the first game to keep you engaged. The gameplay is the same with some added improvements and the graphics are nice, but that’s not enough to help the game as a whole.

I was really hyped for this sequel, but was horribly let down. The game looks and feels more or less like the previous one, so It's almost like we're back in 2013/2014 game mechanic- and graphic-wise. This is unfortunate, but a good story can sometimes make up for this shortcoming. That's unfortunately not the case for this one. The writing is really bad and feels really forced. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a huge fan of the original The Last of Us. In my opinion the new game is disrespectful to the fans of the first one. It might even have another name instead of The Last Of Us Part 2 and it wouldn't make any difference. Although the graphics are great the story, which has always been the main focus of this franchise, is very bad and ridiculous. An unnecessary and generic story of revenge, full of flat characters and without purpose. Joel's death was done in a forced way. He was tortured to death by a character that the player is later forced to control. So the game tries to get the player to sympathize with this new character called Abby (the person who tortured Joel to death) through cheap tricks like petting dogs, saving children, showing the same flashback of the firefly hospital several times. I'm not sad about Joel's death, many expected this, but the way he died was undoubtedly questionable. This death, however, is not the biggest problem, the development of the characters is bad too. The game mischaracterizes all the old characters in order to promote new ones that are extremely forced and artificial as well as the context and situation in which they appear. The plot, despite trying, does not manage to be as deep as the original, I didn’t feel so much impact controlling both sides of the story because I found certain script decisions forced, especially the situations involving the new characters. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
