Nice visuals, good acting, great soundtrack, ok gameplay but a poor story. I enjoyed the game but the story was bad, ending was meaningless and I didn't get attached to the character really. But overall a decent game. Not great but not bad either.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to give this game a fair shake due to all the controversy, from the leaks to behavior of Sony and Naughty Dog to the blatant lying and spread of misinformation by the access media. Even some misleading information from the official trailers. That said, let's give it a shot.

Story, not a fan, there are so many problems here, let's begin.

The players that don't make it past Joel's death cannot be blamed for that, nor should they be blamed for making their reviews solely on that event alone. The set up abandoned all of Joel's character building from the first, it was disrespectful to his character and ultimately, has no payoff by the end of the game. This is the first event that literally persuades the player from not continuing the game, and it's a big one.

Next, Abby. Her character design is particularly strange. There's absolutely nothing that makes you like her and empathize with her. I hate to say she's agenda driven, but that's the only thing that seems to make sense in her design. To put it as simple as possible, she was created to kill Joel. Why anyone would expect you to like and empathize with her after that is ludicrous. She is the antagonist, plain and simple. We hate her.

So she let's Ellie survive and you spend half the game trying to get close to her again. Could feel like the whole game for some people, and this is where you meet your next big scenario that makes you want to stop playing the game for good. You finally end up in a scenario with Abby, you expect some big fight is going to happen, it's an intense moment, you don't know what's gonna happen because you don't have the upper hand and what happens??? It fades to black and suddenly your playing Abby's backstory and your first thought it WHAT THE EFF?? Second thought is, I DON'T CARE. Then you are overcome with the desire to simply quit playing.

So you somehow go through all that, you get to the end of the game hoping something will make it worth it and then comes the final slap in the face. Ellie loves playing the guitar, it's her thing, it was in her trailers and marketing and had a few special moments throughout the game. Then what happens? You fight with Abby, she effing bites your fingers off and despite her killing Joel, and all the killing Ellie had to do to even get here, she let's Abby go.

What was even the point of it all? WHAT WAS THE POINT!? Where's the payoff to killing Joel early in the story? Why make you play as Abby? She was irredeemable for anyone invested in these characters and franchise. Okay, Joel killer her father, but why did he do it? Self-defense? To protect Ellie??? Here we have a game about revenge that begins with Abby taking hers and then Ellie is like naw???? Tell me how this makes sense? Worst of all is the final salt in your wounds when Ellie can no longer play her guitar.

Atmosphere and graphics are perfectly set and gorgeous. Anyone saying this isn't one of the best looking games on PS4 would be disingenuous. The graphics don't save the game by any means, but they certainly bring the score up and that's about all I have to say on that.

Gameplay? I mean you're forced to kill a dog. That really sucks. Game loves making you do things and then feel bad for them. Plays better than it's predecessor but still gets repetitious and somewhat boring. Especially the latter half of the game because if you're still motivated to play at that point, all you want to do is get to the end.

This game was a massive disappointment primarily due to the story decisions. The story is objectively bad and it makes you feel bad for playing through it. The only thing I am personally thankful for is that I am not invested in these characters like so many others. With that said, I am still heartbroken for Joel and Ellie.

In closing, I'll say that while this game may sell well, the fans will not support a third entry. The bridge is burning and there's nothing that can be done to save it.

This game should not exist. Neil Suckman should be ashamed for lying to the true fans of TLOU. Using Joel to sell the game because they knew no one would buy it if they had just come out straight with Abby being part of the story.

And I can respect what they did here...I went into this game with an open mind...NOT expecting it to be a cookie cutter sequel to LOU..and if you can realize what they are trying to do here, you can enjoy it...they did not do what most game studios do...they wanted this to be more of a cinematic game..having you take control of the villain, was not to get you to like them...I think it was to tell the story (much like how a movie will have you follow the villain). They did something here no other video game has been able to...and if you don't look at it as if it's a video game, and instead a movie you will have a blast of a time! I do think, the 'coincidence' with joel could have been written better...which is why i feel the hate is justified, especially if you are attached to joel. but i think people are putting way too much of a political overtone on this...it's a great game...could just use a little bit better writting for what they were trying to do. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow... just wow. I struggle to put my disappointment into words Because this was one of the angriest I’ve ever been playing a video game. I played the first last of us back when it came out in 2013 and absolutely loved it. The characters were flawed but like-able, the banter between Joel and Ellie was funny and heartfelt, and the story was phenomenal. You could say I was excited for the sequel to this game but honestly it’d be an understatement. So when i played and beat the 20 or so hour long story of the Last of Us 2 you could probably imagine how i reacted when Everything I loved about the last game this game was completely devoid of. The first gut-punch was the killing off of Joel a mere couple of hours into this gruelingly long game, I understand you don’t always get what you want when it comes to games and who they kill off but i felt this was completely unnecessary especially since it happened so early and at the hands of a new character. Who is this new character? Well she’s the main antagonist of the game, you wouldn’t know that though seeing as how you spend more time playing as her then you do fighting her. Meet Abby, a jacked female WLF soldier and her band of fellow less important WLF soldiers. (who despite playing a pretty big role in Joels death get killed in either a cutscene, quicktime event, or by the hands of someone other than Ellie.) I don’t know what Naughty dog was trying to do with these antagonists however because despite how much of Abby’s and their backstory I learned or how much i played with her, I still didn’t care and I still wanted to kill her. It almost seems like the only reason we get to play as Abby is to make the game longer than it has to be. Anyways throughout this game you spend 20+ hours playing as both Abby and Ellie, who’s relationship is complicated Because despite hating, fighting, shooting, and stabbing at each other throughout basically the entirety of the game never actually bring themselves to kill one-another. It’s like I as a player had no control over any of the characters actions, because I for one wanted to kill Abby the entire time so when finally Ellie gets her chance to at the very end of the game she chickens out and lets her live at the last second, atleast the gameplay is fun and the graphics are good though right? 1/10

But atleast we got that mocap sex scene right

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that knew it was going to be hard to swallow. It knew that killing the main character from the first game in its opening hours was going to infuriate people. That people would be so terribly angry that he was crippled and beaten to death with a golf club.

“That’s not how you treat the damn hero of the story!”

That’s the point. This game wants to show you just how horrible its world is. How there aren’t heroes, there are people surviving and dying. What makes Joel special? The fact that you connected to him so well in the first one? The fact that he lost his real daughter at the beginning of the outbreak and that’s sad? The fact that he loves Ellie like a daughter And it helped heal his brokenness? So what? Tough **** That doesn’t give him plot armor. He’s a man that made enemies and those enemies caught up to it.

That’s not to say I wasn’t hurt when it happened. That I didn’t feel a little heartbreak watching someone that I also connected with so much back in the first game (especially being able to project on to him having become a father pretty recently at the time) get belittled and murdered in front of who was effectively his daughter. It **** SUCKED and I wanted to kill Abby for it. BUT that’s the POINT! I felt how Ellie felt (though obviously not to the same extent since he’s just a video game character) and I wanted revenge!

The scene afterward when Ellie stops by Joel’s house one last time before heading out on her revenge mission had me tearing up my living room. When she put her face in his jacket and breathed in his scent one last time...chills and tears. But it also put me in the right mindset for the game to follow. It’s sad, it’s depressing, it’s HEAVY. But it’ powerful too. Just like the first game, you follow a character who is broken, makes selfish decisions and causes pain to a lot of people, but from THEIR perspective it’s the right thing to do. There is no easy answer, it’s not simple “I’m the good guy, they are the bad guy” and it makes you really stop and think about everything from a much more mature and nuanced way.

And that’s just the STORY! To me the most important part of a game simply because I love single player story driven experiences but this is a game after all and it doesn’t sit well with me to only review the story.

The gameplay is very signature Naughty Dog and perfectly in line with the spirit of the first game. By that I mean the com at is intense, brutal, and sometimes claustrophobic. It’s also not perfect. I can’t really point out what specifically about the combat in Naughty Dog games that doesn’t feel QUITE right but I think most people (even mega fans) know what I’m talking about. You have a blast during the combat, don’t get me wrong, but the actual gunplay is outclassed by other games. Not a deal breaker, maybe not everyone agrees but that’s my two cents.

Graphics get a 10/10 from me. What more can I say than the game says for itself. The lush forest environments and overgrown cityscapes pop and are the most readily apparent example of course but even the drab, damp indoor areas lit only by natural light (in most cases) managed to amaze. This is maybe even MORE impressive because of how easily these areas could look flat and uninteresting. It takes a lot of work to simulate indirect lighting on a system that can’t do ray tracing but they manage to do it with amazing technical skill and talent.

What I’m saying it this game really is every bit what the reviewers say it is. Don’t believe the crap about paid-for reviews and people sucking up to a Sony and Naughty Dog. Experience it for yourself. If you don’t like it because you don’t agree with the story direction or what have you then that’s fine. Your opinion is valid and I don’t knock you for it. If you never cared about the game to begin with I don’t expect to change your mind with this. Just please don’t buy into the hate that spewed out after the leaks. It’s just isn’t fair to yourself more than anyone else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

But there are some details in the story that I didn't like, like being forced to play half the game with a character other than Ellie. I don't think any of us wanted to play with Abby since she is the person who killed Joel and we have no attachment to her and we also want her to pay for it. In addition to the game, it lacks a very important part: it allows us to make decisions on our own, such as giving a specific answer in a moment of conversation or making the decision to kill a character or let him live. Or that at least the game has two alternate endings, one in which Ellie dies at the hands of Abby and the other in which Ellie kills Abby and returns with Dina to the farm and can already live in peace because she avenged Joel.
