Though I must admit I wish Joel had much more of a heroic death, if it had to happen, and it wasn’t so near the beginning of the game. Initially I despised Abby for her actions and was even extremely annoyed that the player was forced to play as Abby for a very long portion of the game but towards the end I understood her actions and it was almost hard to paint her as a villain. I even held back at the end fight scene between Ellie and Abby because I didn’t want her to die! I can’t believe you made me grow to ALMOST like the woman that killed my Joel. Well played Naughty Dog, well played. I truly think you should go into this game uninfluenced by any posts you may have seen written about this game. I believe it is a masterpiece. Expand

Although Naughty Dog has gone for a somewhat different type of storytelling this time around, they’ve managed to once again make a masterpiece. The story is told through more than just dialogue between characters, with notes and other remains of the pre-outbreak world, and there is also much to learn about the post-outbreak world and the conflicts between different groups of survivors. I could go on for a while, but I’m writing this on my phone, and the website is not really working with me, , so to finish off this review I’m going to give Naughty Dog credit for their incredible attention to detail. Everything from graphics to physics in this game is amazing. The level designs of this game are also very good, allowing you to take different approaches to every fight. I really really like this game, and I think that it not only justifies the decision to make a second game, but it also gives the story a conclusion with meaning. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So here is an honest review from someone who has actually played the game. This game is a massive disappointment for five reasons.

1: It completely abandons the morally ambiguous theme of the first game. In the end of TLOU 1, Joel killed Fireflies for a completely selfish reason and doomed the lives of millions. There was no concept of good or bad in that game, Joel was not "good or bad" and whether you agreed with his decision came down to the player, blurring the line of what was right and wrong. Now in the sequel, Ellie AND Abby, who I'll talk about later, have the sense that they are right and what they did was "right" and they are completely morally justified in what they did and the player is supposed to agree and sympathize with both of them splitting the players decision. Either their both good, both bad or one is good and the other is bad. Abandoning such a massive concept that people loved the first game for is an embarrassment.

2: it devalues the lie that Joel told Ellie in the first game. In this game that topic has a total of two cut scenes in the game dedicated to it despite it being the whole reason people wanted a sequel. Not only is it not focused on but it is also not the centerpiece of the game which brings me to number 2

3: The game's centerpiece is revenge. This element is not focused on justly in any form of media in my opinion, and when it is, it is so predictable to guess what happens and in this game after Ellie massacre's hundreds of people, she decides the let the person who was responsible for Joel's death live making the whole journey throughout the game, including plot and character development, utterly pointless and the previous sentence stated brings me to reason 3

4: Abby, the antagonist responsible for Joel's death, has very little connection to the first game despite the fact that she is the centerpiece of this game which even further devalues reason one. Her reason for being in this game is that Joel killed her father, the surgeon Joel stabbed in The Last of Us. Now wanting revenge for your father is a valid reason for being in a game, but when your father is a faceless, meaningless character in the overall plot of the first game, it makes the character that wants revenge even more meaningless. It's even more pointless since Ellie doesn't even kill Abby...in a revenge based plot...let that sink in...

5: So Ellie has found out the truth about the Fireflies and she's hunted Abby down and didn't do anything. So as an audience you'd think that'd be the end right. Wrong, because us as an audience never found closure. After this 20 hour game, that wastes our time on a revenge plot so pointless and uninteresting the vaccine still never gets made. We never get out "the end". Our period at the end of the sentence. At the end, we even find out that some Fireflies are still alive. You know what that means? That's right, we get sequel baited!! Isn't that great?....

It's really pushing it calling this game, The Last of Us 2, when the main element from the first game is not focused on, when the antagonist is not connected to the main element of the first game making me getting interested in her void and pointless and only leads me to hating her more so when she has an entire 50% of the game dedicated to her since you play as her in the second half, and the main character of The Last of Us 1 dies in the first 2 hours of playtime, and when the centerpiece that was expected is replaced with a predictable, easy to guess plot, with practically no surprises. This game holds no emotional weight that was present in the first game and when it does hold emotional weight it isn't related to the first game, or I am desensitized into even caring since the only two cases where there is emotional weight is: one of the only characters I care about dies before he gets any meaningful screen time or the emotional presence is related to a new character that I don't care about because I haven't had time to get to know them and their character arcs are either bleak or not present. This game is not a sequel, and to anyone who says,"But it has good game-play/graphics". That is completely irrelevant since this is a story based game, and if the story sucks, it makes the entire game meaningless in terms of its reason for even existing in the first place.

While heavily controversial, tlou2 is just as good as the first posing another great moral decision and watching both Ellie’s plight, along with an arrogant and brutal girl named Abby, go through her own journey. In my opinion this is a game of parallels and advocating peace. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game felt like a lifeless cash grab off the back of tlou 1, not only does the injected social justice feel forced but the storyline feels lazily written, rushed and out of order, not to mention the game forces you to play as the antagonist for half of the game and expects you to sympathize with ‘her’ through pathetic attempts to show ‘she’ is a decent human being when in actuality ‘she’ felt lifeless to play as and I couldn’t help but feel to put the controller down and stop playing. The ending to the game was was also a disappointment and overall just confusing as Ellie decides to let Abby go but mercilessly kills innocent people throughout the game to get to that point, I'm not sure if this was meant to show character development but it didn't come off as realistic or believable at all. Some of the plot makes no sense to me and felt like paper over the cracks during moments such as when Mel was assigned duty despite being heavily pregnant but was still involved with battles and somehow climbing ropes. There was a total lack of character development and the game did not give the player a chance to even grow close to any of the characters and to be honest not many of them were even likable. This game was not only ruined by the SJW, forced progressive hammer but lacked serious plot development and in all felt disappointing and a waste of a good opportunity, i feel bad for the teams of the game that weren’t involved with the plot as the game itself is stunning and the environments were fun to explore.
I'm glad the user reviews are highlighting this game's huge flaws and if anything shows that critic reviews are worthless as they only seem to rate the identity politics of the game, and not the game itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked that we got to play as Ellie one more time and continue her story. I don't like how Joel died, I don't like that we had to play as Abby for as long as we did, I did not care for Abby, I hate that we did not get to get revenge at the end. Ellie went out for revenge and for what? To let Abby go and to lose her girl and adopted child? Joel dying wasn't the issue, it was how he died. Sure you could make an argument that Joel has softened in his older age but the Joel from the first part wouldn't have trusted those strangers so easily.

They could have told the same story and honoured the first game better than they did. At one point I was like "There's no way they're going to make me also kill Ellie as Abby!?".

To summarise, I'm happy to have played as Ellie one more time, I just feel like it was not executed the best. The game is beautiful nevertheless but storytelling wise, it could have been better.

This game is riding on the fame of it’s predecessor and fails to deliver on many aspects. It’s atmosphere is spot on, and the graphics are state of the art (especially on the old PS4), but the writing/story is a train wreck.

I can’t say much because I don’t like spoiling but whoever wrote this game doesn’t understand some basic story writing aspects that all the great writers for books/movies always follow. There isn’t an arc, a point of maturity, it’s a hollow husk that borrows the name of the previous game only in letters.

Shame because this could have been a good game. I’ve sold my copy and warned my friends.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get why this game is getting hate. I don’t think it is deserved (except for the parts where you play as Abby). I personally liked the game, the thing that felt off was the tonal shift. It happened so suddenly that it caught me off guard. One second you are a agile badass killing clickers left and right, then the next you are a refrigerator playing fetch with a dog. The ending wasn’t something that I expected to be so hollow. I was left with an unfulfilled feeling in the pit of my stomach. It felt like my 20+ hours of gameplay amounted to nothing, but after a while it made since( even though it was pretty stupid). My take on the ending was that Ellie wanted to end the cycle of violence by not killing Abby(which was stupid). Anyways Ellie ended the violence by mowing down hordes of people only to not kill the person who killed her father figure and her best friend. The person who stripped Ellie of almost everything/one she had know. Even upon Ellie’s return to her home, she is stripped of her family and 2 fingers. All in all the revenge Plot didn’t really work for a game like the last of us. I applaud Neil and his team at Naughty dog for creating a unique experience in tlou2 but it is impossible to follow up a masterpiece. I still loved playing this game I just think that they needed someone on staff to think of pacing and placing, because it was a bit of a mess. Expand
