I know that it's difficult to accept such a difficult story for characters that many of us fell in love with 7 years ago, but the world that ND created for TLoU is not a kind one. This game isn't about closure, satisfaction for the player, or teaching obvious lessons. It is a story about ramifications, revenge, and hate and the cataclysmic costs associated with them.

From a technical perspective, ND outdid themselves. The game is visually stunning, the mechanics have improved from the already great game play experience of the first game without deviating too much, and the variety of approaches the player can take to each encounter makes for an experience with many possibilities. The attention to detail is second to none.

Now, leaving that statement, let's talk about the game on a simple way, without spoilers: Great graphics, lame design in some areas, absence of a OST, more cinematics than gameplay. For another games it would be enough for a 6/10 or 7/10, but NO for TLOU.

2 reasons why I say it: 1-Legacy, which they ruthlessly destroyed. 2-Fake News! It is obvious that they paid and extorted different "gamer journalists" to evade this disaster, and they failed, NOW THE TRUTH IS KNOCKING ON THEIR DOORS.

And you... do you see the elephant in the room?

Yes. I got annoyed playing for long stretches as Abby and wanted to get back to playing as Ellie but, overall, it made sense.
We learn what was behind Abby's motive for seeking vengeance against Joel. Her motives were just as valid as Ellie's were for hunting down Abby.
The story telling was very good. The game play was us to Naughty Dogs standards. The graphics were gorgeous.
I enjoyed some of the new mechanics of game play and wish they were featured more in the story.
We still saw Joel during the flashbacks and they were bittersweet. For anyone who's lost a loved one they were extremely touching moments.
I saw or heard some of the spoilers before the game was released so I was prepared for somethings but I've never let spoilers spoil a game for me. Sometimes they make me look forward to it even more.
This is an awesome game. Don't listen to the naysayers. Play the game yourself and make your own opinion.

they wanted to do it dramatically like the first game for example, let's think that they want to make a dramatic introduction at the beginning of the game, the only character we have connected with is Joel it would be absurd if there was a vengeance story for dina or tommy but I have to admit that the death of Joel creates a gap in the other part of the game. The game constantly kills things we connect with for example, we love dogs at the beginning of the game and then we kill the dogs.playing abby was seriously insulting. The most ridiculous thing was not to kill abby at the end of the game.Other than that, the gameplay was very nice. I saw people who said gameplay was bad, please keep playing cs go.The game was not bad except for the emotions that wanted to be felt much in the game do not call the game bad because a certain community says it is bad.Just play the game and criticize it with your own ideas

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t think this is a game about revenge exactly, I think it’s more about grief and forgiveness.

I'll start by saying that I am a massive fan of TLOU - I've replayed it about 20 times and the magic in the game comes from Joel and Ellie and the development of their relationship. I didn't “love” the TLOU2. I didn't enjoy it. I can appreciate the technical marvel, the game play (especially the combat) and the cinematography. I can even appreciate or accept the story that is being told.

But I feel robbed. And this is exactly how Ellie feels. And you feel that you been robbed of Joel, or the game you thought you would be playing, the game you waited seven years for. It's that visceral.

For Ellie, she knows that Joel loves her. She knows that she loves Joel. Anyone with a less than perfect relationship with a parent can understand the tension and the conflict. After TLOU, Ellie spends two years not being able to be entirely okay around Joel. She suspects that he's lied about something, but she doesn't know for sure. For two years, Joel watches his decision erode at the most important relationship he has in his life. Then Ellie finds out and it's destroyed. We don't see much, but I imagine that Ellie is distant and cold with him. Two years of their relationship imploding. You see Ellie depressed and stand-offish. When you see Joel his eyes are dejected, his shoulders slouch, resigned.

And then we have the conversation after the barn dance and there's hope that Ellie can forgive Joel and they can try rebuild what they used to have. When Ellie and Dina go on patrol the next day, Ellie says that she and Joel might watch a movie together. She has hope, she wants to try.

Then Joel dies. And Ellie is robbed. This is not just the death of a "parent", this is the death of a "parent" she spent four years directing her anger and despondence at. I'm not at all saying that Joel was not complicit in the bed he made for himself but I, like him, would have made the same choice again. A choice that saw Ellie date, watch movies, fall in love, wonder if she needed to shower or change her clothes. She knows that Joel's choice gave her that but she can't stop resenting him for robbing her of her agency. Until she decides that it's time that she needs to.

They never get to rebuild that relationship. I think part of why Ellie goes deux ex machina on her revenge mission is because of rage, not at Joel dying or at Abby, but her rage at herself. Her grief makes her incapable of processing any introspection so she directs it at the only thing she can - ostensibly revenge and at killing Abby.

The grief that you can personally experience is unknowable to another person, but TLOU2 makes us live through that grief by being Ellie. And we are angry, we feel robbed. And we direct that grief at Abby, because Abby is a straw man for everything that did happen and everything that doesn't get to happen. But Abby isn't a straw man, she's a person trying to survive and cope with her grief just like everyone else in TLOU universe.

I think Ellie reacts in the violent way she does because she can't forgive herself. And that's the forgiveness I think TLOU2 centres on - not forgiving Joel or forgiving Abby. She can't forgive herself for those four years that were wasted and that she and Joel will never have. And she can't move on until she does. In the final scene in Santa Barbara when she is sitting stooped in the water, she is defeated and a shell of who she was. That's what hating herself has led to. But she sees Joel and she knows it has to end. She has to accept that this is what has happened. It's never been about Abby, and she sees Abby and Lev and sees her and Joel and that for her to move on, she needs to forgive herself. It's regret and guilt that drives her, and destroys her. Not hate for Abby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I will blandly start with the pros and the cons:

    pros:
    amazing soundtrack
stunning graphics (really pushed the jet engine in my PS4)
    fitting atmosphere
    really scary horror elements
    solid boss fights
    amazing flashbacks

    middleground:
    fluid gameplay

    cons:
    gamebreaking bugs
    introduction of shallow characters
    misshandling of tons of characters
very basic run of the mill story
deceptive trailers and interviews by the developers
alteration of the first game's story, just so the current story can be justified
still really dumb ai and not enough use of new elements (-> the dogs)
    finale was unsatisfactory

This leads me to a score of 4/10. Now remember, I write this from a perspective of a player, that has enjoyed the previous game. As a standalone game, without knowing anything about TLOU, TLOU2 deserves 2 points more in my opinion.
My review won't have much of a structure, it's not a classic review. It's rather about random things that come to mind, while trying to adress each and every one of those points. I will most definitely forget to adress some things. Bear in mind that I am no professional reviewer.

So let's start with the good things... The game looks stunning! There isn't really that much to add. Naughty Dog really has pulled everything out of the PS4s repertoire, so much that you even experience (very very few) framedrops, which don't really bother me that much tbh, since the last of us is no competitive shooter. The whole presentation is amazing and really gives you apocalyptic vibes. Good apocalyptic vibes, because even though the game plays after the downfall of humanity, its still so vibrant and detailed. It gives it such a nice atmosphere, every locations is a stunner, it overloads your senses to the point where it's nearly overstimulating. Same goes for the music. It underlines everything that's good about the appearance and amplifies it tenfold. It also added to the "horror" aspect of the game. Yes I know, it isn't a horror game per se, but the dread you felt throughout encounters in a big rotten and empty city were just chilling. You were always on edge, especially since every non-human encounter was very unpredictable. Now we get to the bossfights, which also were a stregth of the game. they were perfectly stage, they felt heavy and "plastic" and they were challenging.
Now this sounds all good and fine and it seems that the last of us II is a perfect continuation to the beloved first adventure. However Appearance and playability isn't everything. The most important aspect of TLOU was it's characters, it's story, the relationship you have formed. None of that is good in the second game. None. Naughty dog introduced a bunch of new characters, at least half of them were treated as NPCs. Once they died an unspectacular death, they have been simply forgotten -> Jesse and Manny. Most act absolutely irrational, as our beloved "protagonist" and his brother. Joel and Tommy had the strongest downgrade in rationality, considering they still live in a post apocalyptic world. They treated an armed group of people seemingly as acquaintances, being incredibly relaxed and giving out info about themselves. Info that inevitably lead to Joel's death by a golf club (which is quite funny since they implied - Trailer and Interview - that Joel would be a longer part of this game). All that, because NPCs daughter, Abby, (the murderer) from the first game wanted revenge. Yes, that is essentially the whole plot. Yet another badly written revenge story. The character you played throughout the first game, just dies an incredibly stupid, undeserved and unspectacular death, so naughty dog can introduce their boring revenge story trope and a very boring (Antagonist). I wrote antagonist like that, because Abby isn't really portrayed as Antagonist, but a protagonist of her own story now. You have to play with the Joel replacement and you get gaslighted into feeling compassion for her: Her playing cutely with dogs, giving some flashbacks regarding her father's death. Also... regarding father's death: To make the story work, naughty dog changed some things from the first game's plot. They completely changed the doctor's ethnicity from african american to white american. I have absolutely no idea why. Then they started to feed you the narrative that Ellie was a guaranteed cure, even though she wasn't. They essentially changed parts of TLOU1 to make their fanfiction-tier story in TLOU2 work. Then they created this artificial infighting between Abby and Joel, because HE prevented HER death and hence HE risked the lifes of thousands of people.
I felt no sympathy for Abby whatsoever btw. The story felt forced and the game merely used TLOU1 as a stepping stone for their entirely new setup.
Now to the finale... Ellie has fought through hundreds of people to get to Abby, the final fight occurs and what happens? Nothing, she lets her go. Bravo!
The only good things were the Ellie and Joel flashbacks
