A perfect game should entertain, teach, and provoke emotion (positive or negative or both). The gameplay and audio/visuals alone warrant top marks in entertainment. The lessons on empathy and futility of revenge are present, if somewhat on the nose; education isn't a top score here but it's checked off the list.

Finally we have the provocation of feelings. Similar to how a perfect feel

The lessons on empathy and futility of revenge are present, if somewhat on the nose; education isn't a top score here but it's checked off the list.

Finally we have the provocation of feelings. Similar to how a perfect feel good game, film, play, or book can make you smile, a proper feel bad story can make you frown and feel down inside. You feel bad but the point is that you felt something at all. It's too easy these days to find soulless cash grab sequels that illicit no emotion save perhaps boredom. TLOU2 is successful in this department. Not perfect, but successful.

10 out of 10 not because it is fully earned but because too many 0/10 scores were submitted by those who didn't play the full game in order to fairly pass judgement on the whole thing.

10/10 best game i've played in a long time. People say its bad etc etc, but ok. Give me another game to play then, I want dark gritty story, singleplayer, and i want guns. AND it must be 2020 game. "play mario odessey" "play zelda botw".

Bought 3 copies just to support devs.

Don't be mislead by the fake reviews or ones done by players that have only played 2-4 hours of the game before reviewing. 50% of the game is played with a different character that we know nothing about. Which might deter some players as it would've deterred me had I not fallen to the same fate.

    Gameplay 6/10

Overall (Since it's mostly a story focused game) 3/10

-- Characters were bland and easily forgotten; they had no impact in their roles and were simply supportive characters to make the player feel less alone, they served no big purpose in the story
and they felt as though they were added only to kill off, which could've worked if they bothered making them matter more to the player, e.g. (Sam & henry in The Last of Us).
-- Story fell short due to having many plot-holes: (Big spoilers):

    - Multiple flashbacks felt unfitting and randomized at times, which took the player outside the immersive experience one should experience
    - Joel's death felt forced to illicit a poor shock experience which could've been executed better
(Either added value by learning more about Abby beforehand, or delayed further into the game)
    - Playing as Abby after a cliffhanger scene made the experience unenjoyable and most players agreed that her role took a very long part in the full game, fixing the issue could've been resolved with her role being played in future DLC or simply shortening her gameplay time. This resulted in mass outrage and fans were not happy with good reason. It's simply not fun to play as the antagonist that killed the previous loved main character in such a gruesome way, and finding any way to empathize with her was gone after her deed.
    - The ending is a cliche; revenge is bad, which is okay if it wasn't contradictory to itself. Abby left undeserving of mercy where Ellie lost everything dear to her without compensation. It's realistic but unsatisfying. A good story can be shocking, sad, and emotional without destroying what everyone loves, and it's unfortunate that Neil could not understand this point.

I pre-ordered, but not for this.
I stayed up all night, but not for this.
This is the greatest fraud in the history of video games.
Nice graphics but now it doesn't matter, because Neil Druckmann has single-handedly destroyed what the series stand for, and what made TLOU remarkable in the first place.

Something I doubt a lot of the good/bad reviews have in common based on the nothing information they provide. First, the death. Yes, it sucked. Yes, I think Joel's story deserved a better ending, but that's. not. life. This game doesn't pull its punches about life. It's messy. Be it the kissing comment by Saul or Seth. The sleeping with a guy who's wife is about to have his kid. To the whole epilogue! Second, gameplay solid. If you liked the first the second is better. Third, graphics great. I loved all the cut scenes. I don't get people's anger over A) a game B) one that was great. That's my two cents. Expand

3 for visuals. -7 for poor story, clunky controls, and forcing the user to play as an unlikable character the user struggles to empathize with. A linear game requires a good story...which is lacking. What were they thinking? Ego? Agenda? Trying to be edgy or something? Sheesh.

Honestly I am just disappointed, Joel was the captivator of The Last Of Us, Joel was the heart and soul of the game. They see him off in the first 30 minutes? The only reason they killed Joel is because they didn't want a man to overshadow Ellie and Abby but by doing so they made the rest of the 20+ hours of game play not fun at all, it's all very linear game play for no reason for the player to enjoy other than they want to complete the game because they just spent £55 on it and don't want to waste money. The character development for Abby was completely backwards, if the dev's wanted us to empathise towards her and her journey for vengeance, don't drop the player into that perspective after you killed off the soul of the franchise before we even know who she is.... Makes absolutely no sense. That results in us the players not giving a **** about her throughout and then you have the audacity to make us shoot at Ellie towards the end? I must have tried to throw myself off a clip or clapped every time I died as Abby. This game has so much potential and Naughty Dog took a **** on it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the mechanics, the sounds, the music, the maps, the characters aesthetics and layers of different groups we come across. I like that Joel was present through flashbacks so we felt his impact and presence however the way he died, face down and in front of his loved ones, seemed like a cheap attempt to create a traumatic motivator for Ellie. It made Abby look sadistic. Unfortunately making a character like this enjoyable to play is a difficult challenge and I feel they missed the mark. This would be an issue if this were a movie. Abby didn’t feel like a well developed character, it felt like the plot was written first and she was created to fit into the mirroring aspects too much. I respect what they were trying to do but the second half of the game was a chore to play though as a result. For me they lost this out engagement when they made us play as Abby, a character we don’t like, and get us to hurt a character we like, Ellie. Had we played as Ellie then we w old still have understood both characters perspectives but it wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable for players. Depressing films are fine. A depressing story in a game need much better characters and a hook that makes us enjoy playing them and this game missed than by forcing the ‘mirroring’ in the story writing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointed. Although I've grown to see some of the flaws of the original it still pains me to see what they did to the series. In an attempt to be deep and prove video games are art they instead made something without any meaning besides shock and subversion. I would be more angry if I hadn't already seen so many of my other favorite series ruined by the same thinking. Expand

A terrible intro and ending that leaves a lot to be desired. No respect for beloved characters. Very little gameplay change. The game just tries to hard to make you feel a certain way and support characters that you don’t care about. Overall the message is revenge is bad, but apparently not for Abby, just the people we likes

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
