This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually, this game might be one of the greatest games I have ever played, right up there with Red Dead Redemption 2. However, the story Last of Us 2 took was absolutely garbage and included one of the most unsatisfying endings to a video game I have ever seen. Half the game is played by Joel’s killer and although the game tries to get the player to sympathize with her, it executed it poorly. The ending is also terrible as Ellie never even fulfills her revenge mission. The entire game is centered around Ellie gaining revenge for Joel’s death and for what? To let Abby go just because they need to “end the cycle of revenge”? Also, the trailers for the game intentionally deceive gamers to believe Joel is alive throughout the game when in fact they are all flashbacks. The only way this story could’ve been salvaged was to let the player play as Tommy instead of Abby and actually fulfilled Ellie’s mission. Instead, Ellie lost her father figure, partner, and two fingers to not even avenge Joel’s death. To think half of this game isn’t even played as Ellie (but as Joel’s murderer) is so unsatisfying. People who defend this garbage story line will say that you need to look at Abby’s POV and that “you just don’t get it” or make some ridiculous claim that you don’t like the game because of its inclusion of LGBT characters. That definitely is not the problem, the story is just legitimately terrible. Expand

At first I thought all the negative reviews were due to the LGBT themes and disagreed with them entirely and was really enjoying the game. For the first half of the game, I'd have given it a solid 8/9. Naughty Dog were so incredibly misleading with their advertising leading up to the game release. To the point of misselling. I want my money back for their false advertising. This isn't the game anyone was sold on and we deserve refunds.
I can't give it a 0 due to the enjoyable first half, enjoyable not perfect. But the rest of the game is an an insult to everyone everywhere who cares anything about computer games and story telling and general treatment of fans who pay these developers their wages. Do not buy this failure.

I think this is a good game, with its pros and cons, the story is good, the physics are great, the environments are amazing, and the music is amazing.
But not everything is rosy, the gameplay is exactly the same as the first one, they just recycled it, the script is a bit poor, sometimes an example in flashbacks that are only to make us nostalgic. but each person knows what they are

Yes is sucks that Joel got killed and how he was killed, but that is what is supposed to make the user feel Ellie’s pain and seek revenge. Mission accomplished. While playing Abby’s story, you see a bit of Joel and Ellie in her relationship with Lev. Ellie chooses to show some compassion as she sees this relationship in the end. Ellie is left alone, sad and with no real purpose left in her life. What would getting revenge have gained her? Another Joel and Ellie story would have been fine to appease the masses, but I thought it was nice that the devs tried to move the game forward beyond just the 2 characters. I guess you will either love it or hate it. Either way, the game is a technical marvel. It’s the most gorgeous game I’ve ever seen on any current platform. The combat is fun, anxiety enduring, frustrating, and a blast to play. All of the tiny details painstakingly put into the game are amazing. Imagine how much time they spent coding the rope and cable physics alone into this game. The controls are fluid from crafting, to switching weapons, to interacting with the environment. Animations are all spot on and create a real world feel. The cutscenes are the beat I’ve seen in any game. The atmosphere just draws you in. Did I mention the visuals? Jaw dropping on a 4K OLED panel with HDR. If you don’t play this game for the reason that Joel died, you are doing yourself an injustice. The game is truly a masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alot of people upset about Joels death, because he was killed off for political reasons. The game focuses more on how to look good politically, with a disorganised story. I personally enjoyed the flashbacks with Joel, more than i did the rest of the game. The characters in game do not talk that much as theirs a clear lack of in game chemistry and character development. The Game doesn't feel like a part 2 of a legendary game. Im not even upset about Joels death, its the fact that it happened in the beginning of the game, and i dont mind the ending, its the constant drag of events and playing as a character(Abby) im told not too like in the beginning of the game. However, one thing i did like about Abby was her chemistry with Lev alot more than i did Dina and Ellie. Expand

I really hated playing as Abby, not only did she kill the franchise's most beloved characters in a cold-blooded way but she has poor character development and is genuinely flawed with no redeeming qualities. In the first game, most of the characters were flawed too, such as; Tess, Joel, the fireflies, but they were pushed by a strong narrative that built a strong foundation for these characters which is why we love them. Even though Tess wasn't really explored in the first game, I still remember her and have become attached to her character because of how the story portrayed her to be, a no-nonsense person who does whatever she can to get the job done. The fireflies were an anarchist group that trued doing things their way because they felt that the government has oppressed them so they rebelled and even tried to do their own research of the fungus. But for Abby, she seems to just go to the side to whichever is more convenient for her. She's a character with no foundation except for her dead father. After she switches sides to help Yara and Lev, which in my opinion were the best and most fleshed-out characters of the game, she proceeds to lie and manipulate her closest friends, cheat with her ex and kill her close WLF friends because they were in her way. the game tries so hard to sympathize with Abby and even after playing her for half the game, I still do not sympathize with her and want her dead in the story. The narrative of the story tells how bad revenge is but, in the end, Ellie lost everything because she went for revenge and she didn't even get it, its so sad to see her being treated her like that.
Too many characters were introduced with a poor narrative that I don't even remember the names of the people that died because of how little they mattered to the story. After these main characters die most of them don't even get mentioned, it's like they never existed.
I hope you guys tell a much better story in your future games. This was a complete letdown.

I could see this working with different characters in the same universe as the character arc's just feel a bit aggressive. Mechanics didn't make sense as in world reason from previous game was retcon/detracted. They tried to expand, but it didn't work as well as intended. Not to mention logic issues where enemies would be hidden out of sight, but when looking at the area they must have been at shows no foot prints or other details the previous game was pain staking with. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Combat is much improved version over the first game, but plays in a similar way that really shines at higher difficulty levels.. Visuals are amazing, even on a launch PS4. Puzzles are less boring than they were in the first game. The main thing holding it back is the ambitious but messy narrative that is hit-or-miss. It's a shame people are review bombing this and not playing the game before reviewing.

To anyone salty about Joel. Joel was a bad person. He was obviously going to get what was coming to him after all the bad he had done. I don't understand why this is surprising to anyone. The execution wasn't perfect but it definitely made sense for the story.

Abby is a well-developed character. Her story arc is similar to Joel's in the first game. Bad, hardened person and redemption by taking care of a child. Her rescue of Lev at the end where she just killed everyone on both sides is also similar to Joel's actions to save Elly. By the end of the game I liked her a whole lot more than I liked Ellie. In fact, I think the way Ellie was handled is one of the weaker aspects of the game. While Abby's friends were interesting and made sense, the game failed to really give Dina and Jesse time to shine in Ellie's story. Tommy's turn at the end also doesn't quite feel earned. Dina abandoning the farm didn't make much sense for me either. Actually, the whole ending felt a bit rushed and could have been a whole game itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First every review because wow! So I had hopes the narrative wasn’t that bad after hearing everything, I did stay as spoiler free as I could until I finished the game, but wtf naught dog. Killing the main character from the previous game to make a revenge story was a good idea, however the execution was hot garbage. We go through all the work to take revenge as Ellie to then play as Abby the villain to make us see her side and, I’m assuming, make us feel for her. Which in someways it did for me, but then you make us continue to play as Abby when we confront Ellie forcing us to beat a beloved character which was a BOLD decision that backfired immensely with everyone’s feedback being the clear example that it was a garbage decision. Everything up to that point was, in my opinion, still leading up to be a fantastic game. But the decision, again, to make us fight Ellie and win, is when you lost me. Have you had a switch back to playing Aly when we got to that confrontation making us beat Abby, I would’ve been fine with rest Love it. If you want to still kill Jesse do it, mortality wound Tommy or kill him I wouldn’t of cared as long as we got to kill Abby. Heck you could’ve even killed off Lev as they were leaving the island Ao you wouldn’t of had to involve him at that point. But it felt like you wanted to drag on the story from that confrontation which is a load of BS in my opinion. You should’ve ended it at that final confrontation and ended peacefully with Ellie and Dina at the farm raising JJ. That could have been at the perfect finish for this game but you squandered it. Do you let Abby win by making us beat Ellie. You then make us play as Ellie again to go and kill Abby which when we get that chance we let her go, then for more insult to injury when we get back to the farm Dina is gone and we don’t even know if Ellie finds Fina and they potentially get back together raising JJ, you just end it there. Honestly, I think if you chose to ha e had Lev died while being strung up on the beach with Abby thus giving Ellie essentially a mercy killing but still a revenge killing would have been better then what you decided. But instead you choose to make us go through all that to forgive Abby through PTSD on Ellies side and when we get back to the farm we find out Ellie has basically lost she loved even her ability to play the guitar correctly which is minor I know but still. I don’t even wanna play new game+ because there’s no satisfaction at the end. It just sucks because it feels like you had a very great story building up to the moment the Ellie and Abby confrontation happens, but when it does it seems you just took a dump on the story. The game itself is beautiful I appreciate the gameplay and how it is a even though it’s very repetitive, it just sucks that when you get that climax it feels like you’re falling down Mount Everest with no chance of stopping until you hit the bottom. I doubt it will even happen but I feel like you need to pull a BioWare and fix the ending like they did for Mass Effect 3 even if it’s just an alternate ending like choosing to play as either Abby or Ellie at the climax. Or just don’t make us play as Abby, the villain, and let us play as Ellie and beat Abby. Expand

On one hand, i haven't been this engaged into any story since playing the first TLOU, on the other hand, playing this game almost felt like emotional abuse at times. I won't get into why exactly because of Spoiler reasons, but this game is incredibly depressing. While other works of media dealing with bleak and brutal worlds still try to get a positive message out of their universe, this game just hits you with bad vibes from 2 hours in until the end. It took some time to get comfortable with, but now i feel weirdly glad i was confronted with such dark and depressing themes in a non-real-life scenario. However, i get that something like that is not for everyone, and that's alright. Still, I'd rate my personal experience a 10/10, and if you're looking for a game that'll tear your heart and soul into pieces without ever trying to repair the damage, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game. Will rate it 3/10. (Spoiler-free) Graphics and sound and level design are pretty nice, will agree on that. BUT, its mostly just walking simulator with fast getting repetitively boring combat. The story is meh and the game is just a movie with some walking/combat moments. Don't think that you need to buy it. You can get the same experience just by watching a walkthrough without commentary.
