Joel looks Tommy in the eyes while cleaning out a guitar, telling him of the events that unfolded in a hospital in which Ellie was supposed to undergo surgery. Consequently, it would have meant the cost of Ellie’s life in exchange for a cure. At least, this is the very first scene of The Last of Us: Part 2. “Jesus Christ Joel…what did you do?” Tommy asks. Tommy can only think of the past events that unfolded in Joel’s and Ellie’s quest, as questionable by stating later in the scene, “I can’t say I’d have done differently…”. Earlier Joel simply replies and reassures Tommy that “I saved her.”. Joel was caught between an extremely controversial decision that was eventually being controlled and manipulated by individuals who wanted to fix everything an infection has brought with it, ever since its emergence. Such examples of these individuals are the surgeon – Abby’s Father, the Fireflies leader – Marlene, and even Joel himself. However, Joel was the only person that really wanted to do right by her, by saving her from her inevitable doom. As a Father, this makes perfect sense if it were to be considered that Joel’s feelings for Ellie have grown to a level of that for a daughter. However, having completed part 2, it only seems that The Last of Us is the only significant story out of the duology that can be taken seriously because it was the only one the made absolute sense. The analysis has begun.
Yes, I am stating that The Last of Us: Part 2 does not make sense. Despite it being an amazingly directed, animated, and immersive story, it lacks real legitimate purpose, and proceeding events truly hurt the story’s foundation. Why is there even a part 2, to the happy ending story we had received in the first part? Or why did the events unfold the way they did…when realistically…it is plot immortality that was simply handed to some dead surgeon’s daughter – Abby. In self-defense for Joel and Ellie, Abby’s father was the one who killed himself for not allowing Joel to leave peacefully. Abby’s father was the one who stood in front of Joel with a knife, with intent to kill him. As a consequence, Joel Killed Abby’s Father….and this should’ve been the end of it in part 1. It appears at first that the story is going by smoothly, however, things take a sharp turn when the story is dropped off on Abby. The biggest problem with Abby is the immense amount of plot immortality she has been given. I am not sure why she even exists! It is a bit outrageous how she simply and miraculously runs into and is helped by Joel and Tommy. Her entire purpose was to find and kill Joel, but the fact that the plot just hands Joel over to Abby is ridiculous. This is the hugest blow The Last of Us: Part 2 takes to itself. This is primarily the reason why the story can not be taken seriously. Additionally, it counters the fact that Abby eventually stopped pursuing vengeance after several years have passed. She discusses this with Owen throughout one of the flashbacks she has in the story. So, even after all those years, it is a possibility to reconsider revenge…but at what cost? Abby took Joel’s life in exchange for all of her friends’ lives. It just comes to show that Abby has little to no real character development. She is selfish, and extremely naïve. How can she put all of her friends’ lives at risk by taking the life of an innocent man who was simply trying to save his “daughter’s” life? It is simple, she never took into consideration the immense amount of value Ellie had for Joel, and vice versa. She naively puts herself into Ellies position and states that she would’ve wanted her dad to conduct the surgery, even if it took her life. But this isn’t about Abby, nor her Father! This was about Joel and Ellie….and The Last of Us: Part 2 shoots itself in the foot by taking this crucial fact away. Afterall, Abby with her huge guns for muscles and immense amount of plot immortality is miraculously handed Joel’s life, and she seizes the opportunity and takes her long-desired vengeance. Overall, the story wasn’t fulfilling in any way. No real sense of justice was achieved. I have lost myself, my family, and my purpose. The Last of Us: Part 2 held little to no real significance when it came to provide a purposeful story. Despite its quality, in both gameplay and storytelling…storytelling is vital when giving purpose to a story as immersive as this. (Immersive because it is a videogame after all.) The creator/author of The Last of Us: Part 2 threw away all his foundational and meaningful storytelling…for an addition that took everything away from his creation. The Last of Us: Part 2 is definitely one of the most overrated videogames of 2020…and it breaks my heart realizing this.

It was an amazing game for me. I looked at it with an open mind and was rewarded in doing so; a little more needed to be added to the story, but other than that, it was amazing. In the future, I believe this game will become a cult classic, even though it seems the general public doesn’t agree.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My rating is not based on any anti-gay sentiment and to accredit it to that would be blasphemous. What isn't blasphemous is just how terribly written the story of this game is. You attempted to make a revenge/avenger sequel and ended up making a piece of **** mixed with a rainbow that will go down in history as the biggest example of a producer missing the mark with their audience. Why the SJWs at metacritic gave it an obnoxiously high score is beyond me; however, i think they were scared of negatively reviewing a game that had two same sex, gay female protagonists. This game is a hard pass unless you are playing it specifically for that reason Expand

This game is not only disrespectful to the first and it's respectable characters but the writing is just everywhere it feels at best like a fanfiction fever dream by Neil druckmann. To anyone who loveed the first game just like me I highly recommend not playing this as it will ruin not only your memories of the game but ruin the story. Start the game as normal in town you're the Talk of the Town because he kissed a girl and wow okay nothing to do with zombies nothing to do with the first story so let's let's get on with it secondly you leave leave Jackson a small community Town put together by Maria Joel's brother's wife. You leave to go on patrols which was pretty cool and makes sense you want to control around the whole surrounding area in case any infected get to close it quickly switches to this unlikeable character named Abby an overly muscular girl I think as they said they did not want to portray gender in this game for some reason which makes us scared to look really stupid and dumb and someone I wouldn't want to play as picture Jordan Vaughn Stranglehold from Fairly Odd Parents mixed with the likeness of the boy who played in the reboot in Rob Zombie's Halloween movie the whole reason of her story from what I can muster because I couldn't find myself to finish this game even though I know what happens is she's getting revenge for Joel killing her parents now there's nothing wrong with a good Revenge story but when you're playing as Ellie you go on a murderous Rampage and kill almost everyone except responsible except for Abby. As for the game play you'll hear a lot of positive feedback that's because they didn't change the formula which is amazing they did update the graphics and some mechanics which was also a change of pace but this proves that game play can't and will not be the only thing that drives the game I've been waiting and a lot of people have been waiting 7 years for this game only for Neil druckmann and naughty dog to s*** on us it is unbelievable I feel like this is a nightmare I encourage you guys definitely to watch more reviews Maybe on YouTube and see for yourself just do not play the game thank you. My resume after 5 hours of play: Lame history, bad gameplay, gorgeous exteriors, awful interiors.

The game feels severily dated in the gameplay. the skirmishes were heavily scripted, and the 'game' is 50% dated gameplay and 50% cinematics and walking around.

The first part of the title was a WAY BETTER game than this second part. skip if you can, or wait for a heavy discount.

You can’t complain about the revenge story being jammed down your throat if you’re also angry with the ending. Because if you do it means you didn’t understand the revenge story being told. The importance of the female centric story is immense. Female representation is one of the most important things to me when it comes to emerging narratives, and the representation this game provides is monumental. The first two hours of this game left me bawling, and there was never a point where i felt comfortable putting down the controller. I constantly felt the need to see what happens next. The visuals are gorgeous, the sound design is incredible. But boy howdy, that story makes it. Expand

Couldn't be more disappointed in the story and writing for this game. Characters aren't at all true to their past values or traits, story feels like a toddler tore up a script and this is what was left. Gameplay is solid and good visuals but they don't make it worth the time to play it.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
