Too bad everything else is miles behind of what Naughty Dog can do. Gameplay has little to no innovation. Meaning if you replayed the 1st part to get ready for second, everything will feel familiar but that means you will grow bored that much quicker. Only 1 new type of infected (not counting the boss fight) so nothing to look forward to in the fight sections. Copy pasted human boss fight from Uncharted 4 gives away Naughty Dog's lazyness with the sequel. But i guess all of that could be forgiven in a narrative driven game....if the narrative wasn't insulting to player's inteligence. Story is absolutely terrible just as the pacing and constant jumping between timelines and flashbacks. Just as you are starting to get ''into it'' you are quickly pulled out with a flashback or a walking sequence. Not to mention the deceitful marketting. Definitely not trusting Naughty Dog again with a preorder. Can't give the game more than a 5 for beutifull graphics and detailed animations. Expand

The game isn't enjoyable due to bad story decisions. The gameplay and graphics are good but not mind blowing. The 0/10 and 10/10 reviews are both wrong... It's just an average game because of the butcher work they did to the story. The game is average, a 5/10 is right.

On paper, the Last of Us 2 has everything it needs to be an instant classic (Shame that multiplayer wasn't included). It was breathtaking graphic, slick and immersive gameplay, and a great amount of accessibly (especially when it comes to difficulty setting). However, everything great about the game from an artistic and technical level is bogged down by one of the worst narratives I've ever experienced. It is Last Jedi and Game of Thrones Season 8 levels of bad, and completely tarnished what me and so many other adored about the first game. Rather than being a continuation of Joel and Ellie's story, Joel is instead thrown the way side for a new character named Abby, who you are forced to play as for a good portion of the game. Abby is one of the most unlikable and irredeemable characters ever in a video game, and honestly deserved to die. But instead, the game forces upon you an incredibly contrived "revenge is bad" narrative that is at odds with how many players will feel while playing. The game is so bleak and depressing that I honestly had a hard time finishing, and to say that the ending was unsatisfying would be a massive understatement.
As the Fireflies would say, "when you're lost in the darkness, look for the light", but the Last of Us 2 seeks to avoid the light at all costs, and it results in an experience that I honestly wish I didn't waste my time with. If you enjoy the game, that's fine, but for me, it is a great insult to what made the original special, and should not exist.
To everyone who said that the Last of Us didn't need a sequel, you were right.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stunning graphics can't save this game. The story is terrible and told poorly, the new characters are unlikable. Ending pointless. They had a real opportunity to make this game something special, and instead made some very strange decisions with regard to the plot and characters. It seemed like it was made in the wrong order, would love to have developed sympathy with Abby and maybe have her work with Ellie before killing the main reason people loved the first game... To give it a zero is wrong, Objectively the graphics and animation is great, the game play is ok but highly repetitive and feels like a real slog towards the end. You have to credit the developers for the sheer effort that has gone into the game and for taking a risk with the story, it just didn't pay off for me. How anyone can give this a 10 and call it a masterpiece is beyond me, its a deeply flawed title but god bless if you liked it. Picking up the game second hand for £20 or so would be a fair shout. + Different tone, the game feels different, not just like an addon

    Things I didnt like:
    - Abby. This was the perfect moment to introduce a very strong transgender character: the world is **** people are becoming crazy, so it makes perfect sense for someone to question their sexuality, beliefs and other. But she does nothing to depict the benefit of her being transsexual, or the character traits to affect the story: aside from a meaty scene and couple very flat jokes, she could have been a guy and nothing would have changed. A missed opportunity.

    - Story. Seemed out of place, rushed - the story would feel much more compelling if some events appeared earlier than the others, it feels like order was screwed. And overall, it was quite predictable.
    - Gameplay: combat still sucks ass, very slow and clunky, especially during escape sequences. I guess controller limitations, but hey... it is literally painful to aim sometimes.
    - Ending: Subverting expectations, in the worst way, the last jedi way. won't spoil, but whatever you have done in game is literally thrown in the garbage bin, since apparently it was not needed and a character does 180 emotional transformation.

Could have been better, average game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game today (06/26) and cried a lot, not because of the story but because I waited six years for it and remembered how happy I was when I saw the trailer at E3. Well the first thing that frustrated me was the level designs. In the world of The Last of Us Naughty Dog showed us that unforeseen events happen, after all the world is in pieces, buildings fall, few resources but as a player, I felt that they happened a lot to increase the gameplay time in TLOU 2, for me this was very clear and they didn't need to extend the game like that. I would prefer to see how Joel got so different from what was shown in TLOU 1. To summarize a little, I felt that I did not know the new Joel and did not know what made him let his guard down for strangers who were close to Jackson. I agree with his death and I believe that it really gave meaning to part two, after all, he killed and destroyed several groups on his journey with Ellie, but he was not even cautious with those people he met (Abby's group) and it broke my experience. Moving forward, I felt very tired with the gameplay of the game, in many ways the gameplay from the first to the second is improved, the crawling part is very interesting and matches well with the style of the game, the player sees each object being placed in Ellie or Abby's backpack and despite being a small detail, they make the game look real. However, I spent hours going through infected, scars, and WLF without feeling the reasons to do that mainly in Abbie's gameplay, the island part of the scars was a deplorable example of that, and the part that Ellie went after Abby. Honestly, I didn't want either of them to die, despite having to make a big effort to like Abby's plot since he was depicted without emotion by the scenes and art direction. I really loved the fact that Ellie and Abby had mirrored sufferings, that would be much more interesting if the deaths of the loved ones were portrayed with impact by the writers. The Last of Us Part II has an identity crisis, tiresome gameplay for the game itself to make the player go from side to side to have more hours of gameplay. However, the plot itself is extremely dense and interesting, but for me, the way the situations were put together was confusing, with no impact when they should have and badly developed characters emotionally. The game is shocking with some minor bugs that shows up from time to time. But besides the art is beyond expectations. Kudos to everyone that worked in that aspect, my respect.

Cons: Doing a list during my play through, I decided to enumerated at the end from lesser to top cons.

    1. the level design, if is well deliver that feeling of open world after a few minutes exploring the area becomes actually very small with a lot of "exploration rooms" where you will find a forgotten note, material or a bullet. Basically all the levels are pretty linear and the game doesn't take the effort to at least dissimulate.

    2. characters: without counting for Ellie, Tommy or Joel for coming already from the first part, the rest of the characters are completely forgettable, with plain reason and actions that most of the time you will notice doesn't have sense. Introductions seems forced and the moments when they are cooperating with Ellie is just basically, you can take it off of the gameplay making a solo adventure and will not feel different.

    3. the story and dialogues, from cheesy lines that seems take it from a fan fiction forum to the whole story happening in the game. Contradiction actions to the personality of players and "forgettable" moments when the character say something to do something completely opposite 5 minutes later and the dialogues are "fine, nothing, good." The whole story is filled with holes, lame excuses and forced topics.
and 4 (and the worst in my opinion), the length of the game is 22-25 hrs plus for a game that could basically wrap everything in much much less. Unnecessary cut scenes and stealth moments that you basically going to say **** it" and cross from point A to B to trigger the next cut scene. Because is unnecessary long.

I wouldn't recommend it to buy it. If the game was in offer, I will think about it because only for the graphics, physics, art, etc is a solid 10. From the point of view of characters, dialogues, story, puzzles, etc. A solid 0

I pre-ordered it, because I had a lot of trust in the company, but that went out of the window. I enjoyed the game for some time, and even some controversial choices were fine by me, but then it all wend down hill and the disappointment overshadowed the enjoyment.
Here is the sum up of my thoughts of the game:
    1) Graphics - 5. The character models are good and the world is quite nice, but it becomes obvious that PS4 is no longer a decent hardware. After being able to play games on 60fps or more, the drop back to 30fps is really noticeable and worsens the experience.
    2) Sound - 9. Really good. Liked it a lot.
    3) Gameplay - 7. Its better than the first game, though (I know it's done to balance the game mechanics) some choices remain stupid. Like, you can carry 8 shells, not single more, but then you also can carry a brick. Also, the enemies spray you with bullets, but drop nothing. That being said, if you can ignore it, it's enjoyable. Really liked the weapon crafting, though, again, there were some irritating flaws that I can't reveal without spoilers. And the most annoying bit for me is the lack of mouse and keyboard (but it might be just me - it doesn't reflect the score).
    4) Story and characters - 3. I managed to get through to release without seeing a single spoiler and experienced the game as it was meant to, and I went away dissatisfied. It was not just because the events that took place, but also the character development, their choices, which seemed stupid, missing dialogs that I was waiting on and the list goes on. There were some gems, but even they were executed poorly. This game dwarfs against it's predecessor. The actors did their part really well, but it couldn't save the mess the writer made.
OVERALL: 5 (it's not a mathematical result, but an overall score), Can't recommend.

If I'd met myself few days earlier I would suggest skipping this game and keep on waiting for Cyberpunk 2077. Too bad I spent my hard earned cash on this game.

But this isn't one of those. It should be broken down into two categories: the story and the gameplay. I've played through it 3 times now. The first time was the full game - cutscenes included. And from start to finish the score fluctuated. But as the game went on, it just became drawn out and monotonous. When reaching certain climaxes, you revert back to what almost feels like an eternity ago. Which literally is 2 hours into the game. And it ruins the pacing of the game too much.

After playing through it initially, I wasn't sure I would be able to play it again. But luckily this game has skippable cutscenes. Which brings me to category two of how this game should be played. When you don't see the story and in a sense, it's just 1 long gameplay sequence, the pacing doesn't feel bothersome. The story that tries to force you to feel a certain way, can for the most part, be ignored if you choose the character(s) you're playing aren't part of any narrative. With that said, in the latter part of the game, I feel like the characters are boring and not as interesting as the ones you meet in the first half.. and at times, even come off as annoying. However, when you don't have to see their story entirely and can skip it, you experience a great game that is a solid 9/10, if you loved The Last of Us.

But that's unfortunately the problem. The story itself is just trying to tell you that you can't pick sides. You need to understand everything before you choose. It's like a sad attempt at begging. One half of the story is telling you this is why you're taking this journey. Then the second half tells you that this journey should not be taken. The writing is just bad and that's why a side must always be taken. Even if it isn't the right. Who knew Bungie's writing with Destiny would be better than a Naughty Dog game? At least they understand how satisfaction works in video games. After a 25 hour game that had its ups and downs, it needed a solid, fulfilling ending.. but unfortunately, it was just lifeless with no reward for your time spent. It tried to be deep, but deeply failed.

I remember playing the last of us back in 2014 and being completely blown away by the story.
Not by the biggest moments in the game but by the little human moments.
And the acting, that was done extremely well. While the gameplay was alright at best and the enemy AI was laughable, the story is still bouncing around in my head over half a decade later. When I played the the last of us

When I played the the last of us part 2 I was impressed by the gameplay overhaul, as they really did a good job in that department.
But the story on the other hand did the opposite of impressing me.
I won't get into spoilers but I will say that the themes this game try's to go over such as the cycle of violence has been done to death before hand and has been done better in other forms of media.
The dialogue in the game as well as the character writing as well is godawful.

The last of us was a solid 10/10 for me back in 2014 and it still is.
The sequel is only half as good though.

The graphics stand out ... we know that it is not a game for all audiences, it is violent and brutal, with social themes that displease most people. But it is relevant, it is current, and it needs to be discussed. The post-apocalyptic setting is way above what we could see in part one of the game. Entering an abandoned house, and finding traces of the people who lived there is very cool, whether in documents left behind or in objects, it is absurdly immersive and expands to the universe of the game. Those infected are even more brutal than before. Human enemies bring an even greater degree of difficulty. And we do wonder what can be worse than people in this post-apocalyptic world. Play, smile, cry, get emotional with a game that, for the joy of many and the sadness of others, has already entered history! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre story and gameplay. Decent graphics.
It's just not special to see that enemies have motivations too - duh.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
