This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fan review. It’s important to note, because I’m not a hardcore gamer. I’m a fan of The Last Of Us, which I believe set the standard for story telling in video games. The Last Of Us 2 dismantled that standard for better or worse.

Don't get me wrong, TLOU2 is a great game that makes incredibly progressive and interesting story decisions, but it’s an action game first and foremost. It's not a story-telling vehicle disguised as a videogame. That comes across in the level design. There is no way to play the game successfully without killing just about everything and everyone (including dogs – much to wife’s severe unhappiness). You can sneak past some areas, but you'll miss vital resources and almost always get killed a few times in the effort. The character development and story progression is basically designed around game-play with few exceptions, i.e. the flashback with Joel and Ellie at the Natural History Museum. Taking that into consideration, the game falls into the “great” category. It’s really fun, incredibly violent and awesomely challenging.

The problem with TLOU2 is the lack of respect the writers had for the source material coupled with their attempt to moralize and manipulate. I read a great deal of negative and positive reviews after I played through the entire game. To be frank, I’ve been processing the story for about a day. In my humble opinion (I’m never wrong), the negative reviews are as legit as the positive. Very few people actually care whether the central characters are gay/transgender – they are upset because Joel is tortured and murdered by a character that they are then expected to not only play but to eventually sympathize with. It’s not an easy transition and I found myself more than once placing Abby in the line of fire just to watch her head explode. However, it ultimately works. I like Abby and, after I got over the initial hatred, I really enjoyed playing with her set of skills. I acknowledge that the writers are being manipulative by establishing Abby’s picture-perfect relationship with her dad, by introducing Lev and Yara, by turning Ellie into a killer of pregnant women and dogs, by giving Owen a bit of depth when he choses to spare a Scar, but those moments give nuance to the journey. I forgive them.

What I can’t forgive is the third act. There are so many misfires in the story’s conclusion that it’s pointless to try to innumerate them. Let’s just say that Ellie and Abby learn absolutely nothing from the experiences that have been clumsily designed to teach the game player that the cycle of revenge is self-destructive. Wouldn’t it have been great if Ellie had actually learned something before she lost everything? Wouldn’t it have been nice if Abby could have expressed acknowledgement if not an outright apology for killing Joel who basically rescued a 14-year-old girl from being murdered for the chance of saving millions? Let’s not forget (as the writers have) that Ellie was not revived or consulted in the decision, and Joel was marched away at gunpoint by Fireflies who would have rather killed him. Yes, there are two sides to every story, but the ending to TLOU2 is so bleak, so joyless, so aggravating, so pointless that it dramatically overshadows what could have been another game-changer in videogame industry. So close.

Enjoyable is not the right word to use. It's kind of misery porn sometimes. But the technical part - graphics, sound, music, animations is straight 10/10. Also the guitar playing sections are super fun addition (take on me anyone?). Story is not as good as first one but it is still better than most of AAA games that are out there. So from me 7.5/10.

Gameplay was just like the first one and in some aspects even better. New weapons new features. It all felt nice as well as some new tools and upgrades made the game feel something working towards. But the story of the first half is very controversial because of Joel’s death. I think Joel dying so early I. The game was t a bad choice for story design but it’s the way it was executed. Joel and Tommy are survival experts and know when they are walking into an ambush. Tommy even tells them to go to Jackson for supplies and head back where they came from. That isn’t the true Miller brothers we know from the first one. Joel’s death would’ve worked if we saw it through abbys POV from the begging in of the game. If you really think about it what would the plot be about If Joel didn’t die? Killing Joel was too soon which I disagree but it was done correctly in order to show and explain Abbys side of the story. Moving through Seattle days 1-3 was an amazing experience. Hunting down the wolves and going up against the Scars was a cool experience. I also liked the way the game dynamically changed like falling through a floor and getting setback. In terms of characters Dina is a great character but we don’t really learn too much about her. A lot of people found her controversial cause she’s apparently a feminist? Jesse is a great character I like his personality it fits well with the game. Too sad he died. Overall the first half was phenomenal. Killing everyone who was in the room that night felt great that Ellie is getting her revenge person by person. The second half of the game got interesting. We catch up with Abby right before she rushes into the theater and what she was doing 3 days prior to that. The game explains why she did what she did. It all makes sense but the game throws you in loopholes that you can’t get out of till hours later. Up until we switched to Abby I couldn’t understand why she would kill Joel out of nowhere. The gameplay was more so the same with Abby although there were some cool experiences like hospital basement with that huge monster and going on the Scar Island. I didn’t like how we played Abby for a period of time. It felt too long for me. The ending was okay. It wasn’t good. The whole part with the rattlers at the end of the game could’ve been avoided. Instead of Abby getting captured again it would’ve been better if Ellie caught up to her and killed her. Going through the rattlers felt so unnecessary that it started to drift away from the story. Now the beach scene was probably one of the worst scenes in the game. I understand that Abby got her revenge but Ellie never gets to. She lost Joel, Jesse, Tommy and Dina while Abby has lost al her friends but gets to live with Lev. Ellie lost everything to go after Abby and she doesn’t die. The ending could’ve been executed a lot better but it sucks that waiting 7 years for a game led to this. Ultimately this game was very good. The writing was mostly great. The whole gameplay experience with the graphics was absolutely phenomenal. TL:DR - TLOU2 Had a phenomenal experience and graphics but the writing in some crucial parts of the story hurt it more than helped. It’s an amazing experience to play through and I would recommend it to anybody who played the first one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good: The most beautiful looking game I have seen on the Playststion 4. Wonderful cinematics and gameplay help push the story along and the score is on par with Part I. A lengthy story worth the price of the game. The gameplay is improved upon from the first game and polished in all aspects with a top notch system for upgrading and crafting. New enemies and a variety of options for taking them on makes for fun and very tense combat throughout.

The bad: Certain characters behave in ways that make you question if Naughty Dog simply abandoned how the character was established in Part I or if they chose to ignore those characteristics in favor of pushing along the narrative they wanted to tell. Introducing a new character that can be viewed as the antagonist and then then forcing the player to take control of them for half of them game and try to make the player sympathize with them simply does not work. Revenge is painted to look bad in this game for one person and yet seems to be okay for another that is also a mistress to a man with a pregnant wife. It is very difficult to root for the character that kills a protagonist from the first game, even if that person is a bad person in the world of The Last of Us. Naughty Dog still built the character to become loved in the first game and players are supposed to simply switch and view him oppositely in this game to make the new character, Abby better received or liked by fans. In my own opinion, the biggest mistake of the game was establishing that Joel was wrong for rescuing Ellie at the end of Part I. Having the first game end with the player left to decide if it was right or wrong is a much better option than flat out deciding it was a fact that it was wrong and later doubling down that Joel was blind by stating he would do it again. New characters that are allies and friends of Abby (her WLF allies) are poorly written and very much unlikable and uninteresting. Yara and Lev will also divide crowds. I found both the characters, and their arc interesting.

However, credit should be given to Naighty Dog for following through with the story they wanted to tell and not letting fear of backlash dictate their path. The game does everything well but falls flat on it's narrative, especially when compared to its predecessor. It is sure to divide fans greatly but is not deserving of an overall bombing of ratings due to it's story. The game is still very entertaining and an experience that should be had by all fans of Naufhty Dog and The Last of Us world. I do not feel that it is worthy of complete praise either. What it does right is done very well, and where it falls, it falls hard. It falls in the middle ground for me but is lifted by what it does successfully accomplish. A solid 7/10 even 7.5, but nothing more due to what I fails to execute well at.

They wanted players to have a view of both Ellie’s and Abby’s story. It was great. But playing as what the players view as the “villain” for more than 5 hours is what made the game look like it was telling Abby’s side of the story rather than Ellie’s story. I think they should’ve created more events for the main protagonists (Joel and Ellie). Overall the gameplay, graphics and music are as impressive as the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having played the game for a while now The Last of Us Part 2 brings a whole new iteration to the franchise however, I felt as though something was missing from it in order for it to compete to the level of the first one.

The improved combat system and level design made the game immersive and responsive to the players actions. The amount of detail that was in the levels were one of the most detailed I have seen in some time especially within this current generation of games. The physics of the foliage overgrowing on buildings to blood trails in the snow made the players character feel more attached to the environment like reality to provide that immersive experience along with the detailed special sound incorporated within it. Another great part to highlight is the combat system and how that incorporates itself within the games levels, this made the players experience feel more unique as your finishers sometimes incorporated smashing enemies through windows or using objects within close proximity to finish them off utilising the environment and surroundings effectively.

Now I've got the positives out of the way here are some of the negatives in which I think had impacted the game a lot and have caused me to give the score I have given. Having one of the main protagonists die by one of the players characters made an intense and powerful story but unfortunately the execution of the killers character felt forced upon and that majority of the story with Abby feels as though Naughty Dog are trying to push you for sympathy of her actions. Due to a large portion of the game is played by her it kind of takes away what the whole story should have been about. From what I can see it looks as though many changes were made throughout the development which then caused the game to feel rushed in some parts which is quite disappointing as there was great potential there.

Overall, it’s not a bad game but don't go in there playing it with high expectations as you may be disappointed.

Including the story which at times can feel very heavy and human the quiet moments between characters shines but at times it feels like the story thinks it's trying to be deep when it's a very overused trope of "revenge bad these are humans" I have seen many media use this same story beatamd do it much better I like the ambition but it's not a very compelling story to me personally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to preface this review with I didn't read any spoilers before playing and completed the whole game.

The Last of Us Part 2 has some of the best graphics, world, atmosphere, level design, and gameplay I've ever played. But as a narrative-driven game, the second half of the game takes some turns that resulted in me not wanting to finish the game. I was only able to complete this game because of the amazing gameplay/level-design and wanting to see how badly they could mess up an otherwise compelling story. By the end of the game I understood the story Naugty Dog was trying to tell. I think there is a good story in there, but the characters and the tropes they pushed in second half of the game missed the mark for me. I feel they are pandering too much to certain demographic and didn't make any attempt to make the second half of the game relatable to the general audience. So let me explain my issues with the narrative:

    *SPOLIERS*
In the first half of the game you play as Ellie trying to get revenge on a character named Abby for killing Joel. Being a big fan of other zombie games/movies, while killing Joel was a huge shock, it didn't turn me off to the game. It was inline for this kind of universe for me. I enjoyed playing as Ellie and I liked all of the new characters they introduced. Watching Ellie slowly become more and more lost to hatred as she kills off Abby friends while hunting for her was believable and compelling to me. You eventually get to the climax where you are confronted with Abby herself. There's so much tension and anticipation built up and then the game just screws you over. When you think you're going to get that sweet revenge it switches over to flashback of Abby with her dad, and then proceeds to make you play the same timeline as Ellie but from Abby's perspective. This is where the game lost me. I don't like Abby's character, and over the course of 10 hours playing as her, that didn't change. I rushed through Abby's part of the game because I didn't care about her and just wanted to see the end of Ellie's storyline. The game is trying to make you empathize and like Abby, but her character is just boring and uninteresting to me. I understand why she killed Joel, I understand she lost her love interest to her quest for revenge, I understand the pain from all of her friends being murdered by Ellie, I understand her trying to slowly redeem herself by helping Lev, I understand she grew and let go of her hatred for Ellie. Despite this, I never found her story interesting and hated playing her the whole time. I would often suicide to vent frustration. I feel really conflicted about this as well because a lot of my favorite gameplay sequences were during Abby's playthrough. Escaping from the scars after being hanged, descending a broken skyscraper filled with zombies, the boss fight in the hospital basement, and the sniper part. These were all some of the coolest things I've played in a game. I just wish I wasn't playing as Abby.

The ending also dragged on forever. I kept thinking the game would end and then there was repeatedly another level or cut screen tacked on. This resulted in my friend and I playing "take a drink every time you think the game is gonna end". I think they could've cut a lot of last few hours out or structured it better. Overall though I think this is a good game. I didn't like Abby's story but I still enjoyed the gameplay itself. If you don't mind Abby or don't care about the story I think you will really enjoy this game. And I think if you were intereseted in game at first, but turned off by the controversy, you should still give the game a chance.

Despite the controversy regarding the story I thought it was fine. Not great by any means but not nearly the tragity people are making it out to be.

My main issue with this game is the pacing. You play through a good portion of the game as Ellie, investing time and interest into her story, then when it seems the story is coming to a climax you're forced to switch characters to a person you've grown to hate. And honestly, I have absolutely no problem with the writing in Abby's story at all. I don't hate they made me play as Abby. I hate that they made me run through the vast majority of the main conflict as Ellie and when **** finally starts to hit the fan they blueballed me and simultaneously ruins the pacing and momentum the story has been building up to. Mildy annoyed you're left with a half chub from the impending climax, you have no choice but to hate Abby when you start down her story path.
And the writers really didn't do her any favors. The first few hours playing as Abby do absolutely nothing to help redeem her in the players eyes. In reality it just drives that nail of hatred further into your big toenail making you want to run through her story at lightspeed. And when you intentonally compel the player to not care about, or empathize with the character they've been made to take control of, players don't give too **** if Abby redeems herself. You just want to zoom through her story and see how the standoff plays out. Much like an unwanted step-father's attention; it just feels forced.

Now I will say that even though Abby's story gives her some surface level redemption, what really made me come around was how fun the gameplay was towards the end of Abby's story.

You beat some **** ass as Abby. You have some really amazing visuals climbing the skyscraper bridge. And some amazing gameplay featuring action sequences which is mostly lacking from the first half of the game. That is solely where her redemption comes from in my opinion and allowed me to finally connect with her as a character.

Conclusion: With great gameplay, stunning environments, and generally a pretty decent story with fleshed out characters; the real thing holding this game back from being great is, what I can only assume, artistic liberties/choices taken by the games director. The choice to switch to Abby when he did instead of switching periodically just completely stops all the momentum and tension the story has going for it. "Is Ellie finally going to get this ****

"Will the people of Jackson get vengeance for Joel's brutal murder on their own turf?"

"Can Ellie find a way to forgive Joel for robbing her of a sense of meaning from her life?" "Will Abby get bent over a desk by some guy that died 6 hours ago?!?!?"

These are the questions I found myself asking instead of paying attention to what was supposed to humanize an otherwise ****ty person.

ENDING: I've seen a lot or people upset that Ellie doesn't kill Abby in the end. Personally I thought it was fine she opted to not kill Abby. Did I think Abby deserved to die? Yes. Did I want her to die? You **** bet, bud.

The entire duration of Ellie's gameplay we only get flashbacks of Joel where he's painted in a terrible light. (Outside of the museum memory) But finally when we are about to turn that **** Abby's lights out for good we get a flash to a memory of Joel. One where he's not bleeding out on the floor. Or an uncomfortable conversation. We get a flash to a memory of forgiveness. We finally see Joel in a good light, and that's what made me okay with Ellie not finishing the job. Finaly thoughts: This game could have been an easy 9/10 with better direction. So in my opinion its Neil that's to blame for the Lukewarm experience.

But, surprisingly is a character that has some thought put into her. Though the way she kills a certain character is unacceptable, her side is messy through many different ways. In her quest to find the remainders of a familiar organization, she loses her friends, loved ones, her home, and much more. But grows a relationship with new characters and allies.

Ellie's side is a lot focused when it comes to her objective. Ellie is determined to get her revenge at the cost of her friend's lives and more. She is reckless and even at times scary. Gameplay is brutal and disgusting. There are more ways to take out your enemies. You can rush them head on with shotguns, rifles and fists, or you can stealthily take them down with silenced pistols, bows and knives. At one point, Abby's side felt more like Joel's gameplay (from TLOU1), and Ellie seemed like Ellie. Also, this is something I'm quoting right now. "Graphics do not make a a game." That being said, the areas and world's are beautiful and breathtaking. Each new location is more gorgeous than the last. The Last Of Us ll is confusing and weird. Gameplay feels great. Puzzles are not bad. But TLOU is a story driven game, leading characters Ellie and Abby constantly making decisions and behaving illogically are what drive me crazy. If not the outstanding gameplay and graphic, this game deserves below average.

My main issue with this game is some parts being very good, 10/10 even, and others being so unbelievably bad it almost makes you turn the game off. Naughty Dog did an excellent job in a bunch of different aspects, but ultimately failed in the most important one. I want to be clear, I do not hate the story, but i did not love it. I expected Joel to die and so did a lot of fans, and I don’t believe Joel was acting “out of character” for trusting Abby and her people. He had been in a trusting town for 4+ years and if you read the log book, they clearly try to help out whoever they can. However, the way Abby is set up simply makes it almost impossible to like or empathize with her. Joel was simply too beloved to be killed off like he was some NPC. And the fact that I had to play with his killer for 10-12+ hours was criminal. I don’t mind her being a playable character for a short amount (maybe 5-6 hours), but fans were told Ellie would be the only playable character by Druckmann himself so that was a slap in the face. Abby is also just a pretty **** person, the game tries to show you some good things she’s done to make you change your mind but Mel hit the nail on the head when she was **** her out. Naughty Dog also tried to make Ellie very unlikeable. They force you to do horrible things as her then judge you for it when you play as Abby (killing her dog for example). However, I actually really liked most of the new side characters; Dina and Jesse were great, and I think Abby’s crew had some bright spots as well. The acting in this game was some of the best i have ever seen, even with the subpar script they were given. Ashley Johnson absolutely killed it in every single scene. The facial expressions and animations are easily the best i’ve seen in a video game. The same thing can be said about the graphics, sound and music. The world Naughty Dog built and brought to life in this game is absolutely breathtaking, i found myself stopping and just admiring it regularly throughout the game. I have never felt this immersed in a game other than the first installment in this series. I’ve seen some complaints about how the gameplay hasn’t evolved at all since the last game and I don’t necessarily agree with that. While the core aspects of the gameplay may be the same even small additions like prone, dodge, and a knife that doesn’t break every time you use it give you so many more options on how to tackle each level. The puzzles in this game were your typical Naughty Dog puzzles. Not an extreme variety, you’ll get a few dumpsters and some ropes and a few secret entrances. TLOU will never blow you away with their puzzles. This game is rather easy to get lost in, however. Admittedly, I needed the hint feature to pop up on the screen a few times. The enemies in Part 2 suffer from
the same thing they did in the first game: repetition. There isn’t much to say about this, you just fight the same 5 things the entire game, and most of them can be taken out with the same strategy. Human AI is still incredibly dumb with extremely narrow fields of vision. Dogs were a neat addition but ultimately very easy to counter. Overall, i rate this game a 7/10 with the cons being a bad set up for one of the protagonists, Joel dying way too early in the game, the way he died, drawn out sections of the game, repetitive enemies and lazy writing. The pros of this game are the graphics, acting, animation, sound, music, and level design. The story for the game as a whole falls somewhere in between pros and cons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Setting aside my review not as a fan but a writer. Like many of us, I understand the grief to have lost one of our most beloved character. Joel set us up on a emotional roller coaster that delivered such a beautiful ending in TLOU part 1. As much as I would like to give this story a negative review I truly believe the narrative is remarkable. Yet there is no redemption in vengeance.

The ending left me with one question.. How am I supposed to feel?

Ellie didn't grow from her experience, she simply.. Lost it all. Abby lost her father and all of her friends, yet she continued to suffer. Both characters showed emotional and heavy losses throughout the game but none of these characters were able to grow from their experiences. The game is an emotional wreck and the constant shifts of characters eluded any real meaning that could've made for a more or better less, redemption story.

Beside the death of Joel the only other part of the game that I got emotional on was seeing a malnourished Abby. Only then did I feel for her character knowing that both characters suffered so much. Because of vengeance? To find justice? We're rewarded with nothing but grief.

I feel pity for both of these character.

I post this notice after I finished the game, which is not the case for many. Let's be clear, this game is obviously not worth a completely ridiculous average score. Is it worth the notes obtained in the press, which almost unanimously qualify it as a masterpiece? I don't think so either.

Graphically the game is very beautiful, it is not a slap either but I clearly do not have to

Graphically the game is very beautiful, it is not a slap either but I clearly do not have to complain about this side. I only encountered one big bug in my 27 hours of play, so the optimization is also there, the game is technically well finished.

The scenario ... great subject ... it is a completely subjective opinion, I rather appreciated it, I found it coherent but it also did not carry emotionally as I expected. I found the new characters quite bland.

The big problem for me is above all in the very structure of the game, what we do there is just absolutely not interesting! We advance, we arrive in an area with enemies inside or outside but will ultimately be the same as the previous one, human or infected no matter there is no difference in how to defeat them. It lacks surprises, variations in events.
Having to shave the walls and furniture to 20 cm to see if we can loot an item or not is simply unbearable, Naughty Dog should have made this more visible.
The successions of keys on which to press to create ammunition or care are not intuitive and pose problem during fights in difficult mode because the enemy simply does not leave us time to create anything.

TLOU Part II is for me a good game, pleasant to do, no more no less.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
