A genuine good game, great gameplay.
Amazing graphics, completed it in 2 days (25 hours) from beginning to end.
The story can be a punch to the gut in moments (not always in a good way) but I still enjoyed the hell out of it, and will probably replay it multiple times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is not as terrible as people make it seem.
For me it would be around 7.5 or so. It did some things right but also some things terrible.

First some cons then pros and lastly some side things.

    Cons:
There are some poor story part of the game.
I personally dislike that I had to play as the character Abby and therefor rushed through that part.
A bit too much focus on Abbys life, may be so people would sympatise with her or what ever. But really there has been no reason for all her flashbacks, She was an unlikeable character, bland character and pretty much just a waste of time to focus on her story.
    Few glitches and bugs.
Bit too much "smash square" stuff like that.

    Pros:
Visually Naughty Dog did a great work with the game.
The gameplay may not be that whole advanced but pretty straight forward.
There are good parts were you can explore a lot of areas, building and shops which is really good.
Variety of weaponry is good, maybe there could have been a bit more upgrades into some of the weapons.
The small details in both animations, world design and so on are really good. Some of them are subtle but they make it more immersive.

    Both good and bad:
Some of the development with Ellie is done in a good way, other is not. The whole revenge thing is a feeling that most would be able to get. Also there are some old sayings "an eye for an eye makes the world blind" this is displayed well in the story were Ellie makes some poor decisions because she is blinded by the revenge.
The story wasn't 100% terrible but not that great either.

The Last of Us 2 could have been some kind of bigger expansion instead of a whole new game. There was a bit too much filler content.

Pros - Graphics, improved combat system, voice over acting, sounds, & difficulty+ replay (keep all gear & perks) overall gameplay is good especially through Ellie's 4 days in Seattle & Abby's hotel decent and lower hospital boss fight was awesome!

Cons - Length of game (should have cut out Abby's gameplay sections with just cut scene storylines instead.)
Story (Joel is removed from the game to soon. Ellie loses WAY to much for a young main character. Its hard to like Abby after the first stage of the game.) Overall though I did still enjoy the game as a whole, I just wished Ellie didn't lose as much as she did. Hope to see if things get better for her....

The voice acting and the music ( when Joel and Ellie play the guitar ), is just beutiful i love it, it
    warms my heart! 10 / 10

The animations and facial animations are just perfect, im glad that i waited 7 years to see that "next gen". 9.5 / 10

The combat is meh ok its not bad but its not great. I would rate the combat a 5 / 10.

I will not even talk about the story because its just depressing...
I will give it a 4 out of 10 just because they made it and tried to make it good. F

Don't even get me started on the environment! Its so beutiful and good made! ( Its really like a
    movie ) 10 / 10

Overall the game is far from bad but even more far from "The Last of Us 2" that we expected.
My honest score out of all those things is a solid 7 out of 10. ( 6.5 / 10 )

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us 2 is, in my opinion, getting unfair amounts of hate for the story. Some people are really stubborn about hating Abby, but they're missing the point of the game. I'd give the game an 8 out of 10, but they pulled a bait and switch with Jesse and Joel in the trailer. Otherwise, I think this is a great successor to the first game. The game represents LGBT characters in a way that doesn't demonise or stereotype them. It isn't forced down your throat either. Trans people exist. Gay people exist. The game shows that quite well. People who are, understandably, upset about the death of Joel need to understand one thing: Joel was a villain. That doesn't mean he isn't likeable, but he is essentially a serial killer. He massacred an entire building's worth of innocent people to save one person's life, all so he could selfishly have the daughter he lost. That makes him human. Just like how Abby murdered Joel in revenge. That makes them human. Naughty Dog made some interesting choices with the story. I believe that the Abby playthrough should have come first and then have her murder Joel, rather than have her kill Joel, have Ellie go after her in revenge, and have them kill Jesse too. The story is realistic. If I was in Abby's position I 100% would do the exact same thing. A lot of people would. Abby is a likeable character, it's just a shame ND decided to give them such an awful first impression. Graphics: 10/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    Story: 6.5/10
    Overall: 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My actual rating would be a 7.5, but I’ll round down due to my overwhelming sense of disappointment in this game. Mechanically this game is flawless. The graphics are beautiful and one of the best I’ve seen and played. I commend Naughty Dog for improving a combat/stealth system that felt perfect already. I also believe the level design and voice acting are big strengths as well. However, while these things were great in the The Last of Us, the narrative and writing is what makes that game one of the greatest of all time. The Last of Us Part 2 falls very short in those regards. There are far too many coincidences in the story; Abby stumbling upon Joel and Tommy, Ellie losing her map out of her closed backpack for Abby to find, someone magically coming from California who saw Abby. These are a few instances of the lazy writing that is prevalent in this game, something I never would’ve guessed I’d be saying about a Last of Us game. Character motivations aren’t clear, and new characters are so poorly written and forced upon the gamer. They give us no reason to care about Jesse, Dina, Abby, and/or any of Abby’s friends. This game also lacks the moral ambiguity that it’s esteemed predecessor had. This game paints everything as good or bad, and tries to teach a lesson we already knew and was done much better in other media, that murder is wrong and revenge leads to more violence. However the biggest sin in this game for me is the Abby section. In this 25 hour game, you play close to half of it as Abby. Including a near 11 hour stretch in the middle of the game while being left on a cliffhanger. I don’t understand why Naughty Dog thought we would go for that. Not one person wanted to play as anyone other than Ellie or Joel before this game was released, and they damn sure didn’t want to play as Abby after we see what she does to Joel. Just an idea, if you want people to care about a character, don’t have her brutally murder one of the most beloved video game characters of all time in the first 3 hours of the game. That was a terrible decision, and is pretty indefensible. Overall this is an amazing game mechanically, but The Last of Us Part 2 needs more than that to stand up the the first installment. What made the first game have such lasting impact is exactly what is missing from the second game. I am seriously disappointed with this game, and it has dashed my excitement for future games in this franchise. Hopefully they can right the ship in the future, but I don’t have much hope for that. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's a lot to say about this game… From the graphics to the environment, characters, actors, gameplay and of course the "controversial" story.
I'll start with the graphics: This game is absolutely one of the best looking games generally speaking, be it on the PS4 or PS4 Pro, the game LOOKS GOOD and there's no denying it. Even on a vanilla PS4 or a PS4 slim, the game runs smoothly and beautifully.
The environment is alive, much more than the first game due to the fact that the levels are almost completely open and traversal friendly thanks to the game's new improved gameplay mechanics like jumping, proning and getting between small cracks. There are letters and notes scattered around the levels with deep and sometimes extremely depressing world building content in them that are worth reading. The hunt for materials and “bolts” (even on the Normal difficulty dubbed “Moderate”), is fun and there’s much to discover.
The characters are problematic to say the least.
Ellie is cold (although understandable) and brooding and just unlikable unlike in the first game. The only times when she feels like "Ellie" is when the flashbacks happen and those are the best of her. It is of course important to note that she is more mature and of course more vengeful than ever but it doesn't excuse the fact that I just care about her much less than I did in the first game.
The romance and relationship between Dina and Ellie, while still cute left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and I felt like there was more to be explored between them and yet nothing came to fruition. They're relationship was subpar at best and incredibly boring and tedious at worst. Their interactions with one another felt stale almost if the only reason for their relationship is to be some sort of a "romantic" relief.
Abby is a whole other story. On one hand I can 100% appreciate and respect the fact the Neil Druckmann decided to let us see the other side of the coin, not only the evil woman who killed Joel, but a person trying to move on (so to speak), from her past that’s haunting her (shown in PTSD flashbacks and nightmares) and her ability to love and care for other but her story is still another revenge story for a very revenge driven game. On the other, I just don't care about her. Not because she killed Joel, but because I just don't. She's boring, evil, wretched and nothing good comes out of her. Although you have to love the fact she tries with Lev to become better and improve, I just don't understand why I have to play close to 10 hours as her. Again, I respect it, but I don't like it.
While Joel isn’t as presence (for obvious reasons), he still is the focal point for Ellie’s revenge plot on Abby. He’s a side character but for what it’s worth, he’s the one with the most amount of depth.
Now the story.... It's not THAT bad.
I feel that a lot of negative reviews given to the game were given by people who either hadn't finished the game, hadn't played it or just wanted to ride the wave of hate. The story is not THAT bad!
    Was is falsely advertised? Maybe.
Was it long and depressing? Absolutely.
    Was the ending satisfying? 50/50
While I want to talk about the story more I really feel like the story should be experienced individually. It's a long journey but I personally believe that it's one worth taking.

The gameplay is superb. Nothing to say more. While Druckmann said that "the game isn't supposed to be fun" it's one of the funner games I've played in a while. The progression system, weapons, stealth and the difference in gameplay between Abby and Ellie, everything is well made in the best way possible. The gameplay is a true sight to behold (and play!).

And lastly, the actors. Every single one of the main characters (Love them or hate them), are played in the best way possible. Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey are the best choices that Naughty Dog could have made for these roles. They were incredible and worth experiencing the game just for the way they portray their characters.

Final note: Take every review with a grain of salt. Experience the game for yourself. You'd be surprised.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So i completed the story at 5 am today and i have to say i'm overall disappointed with this game, HERE ME OUT.

So the pro's to this game are the attention to detail, from the graphic way of killing people to the pure genius of the sound design IE hearing people gargle on blood as they die or their friends calling out in anger/grief for them or just the sheer atmospheric music. The graphics are amazing and seeing someone's brains splatted on a wall after a head shot is an impressive feat of graphics.

    HOWEVER
Based on how violent and brutal the way you can kill people is, that can also be a drawback. It's traumatising the first time you kill one of the dogs let alone if like me you accidentally pressed the wrong button and bashed ones head in with the big hammer.

    NOW THE CONS.

The story, i mean like really, what did they think was going to happen when they decided to make this the story plot. They kill off Joel, the character that we adored from the first game and the dynamic he and Ellie had in the first game was just obliterated with a gold club (He deserved better)
The way Abby is like Guess when asked who she is like Joel would have any idea who she is. TO THE FACT THAT THEY MAKE YOU PLAY AS ABBY FOR AT LEAST 10 HOURS IN PART 2 OF THE GAME. Like they give you a character to hate like really hate and then they go, here play as this character to try and make you understand her reasons and sympathise with her. which is impossible to do, like at all. Then we get to the ending, Abby lets Ellie go in a way to make you feel like shes changed and is worthy of any forgiveness you may of given her while playing her character (still made no difference to me) but then you get to the very end and it Ellie just beats her to a pulp, looses her guitar playing fingers in that fight too and then lets her go after a flash memory of Joel as if the game is trying to say, Joel wouldn't of just killed her straight away (we know from the first game he wouldn't of hesitated). That was very lack lustre for me and I understand the games reasoning of like its a revenge story that turns into Ellie's grow story at the end but like it just did not win my heart over ending the game that way. Like Ellie through away her relationship with Dina and her kid to go "finish it" to then just not do what she was going to do. what was the whole point of showing the house section of the game knowing Ellie just gonna mess it up in the end for no reason.

Overall, The visuals and the sound are incredible, the extra game mechanics like crawling, the extra crafting options, swimming, the puzzle type ways to get through a building are all amazing and that is why this game gets a 7 from me.

It does not get any higher than that due to the disaster of the story-line.

Also, just to clarify should any media want to take my slightly negative review and say its due to the progressive characters in this game. I fully support people in general no matter race, gender, sexual preference. As long as you are not hurting anyone else, I care not for what you look like, what you identify as or who you date.

Well, I don't think the game was bad. I was having fun playing it. I even didn't mind Joel's death. But the ending and composition of the plot, like playing Abby for 10 hours instead of making 3-5 flashbacks, each 20 minutes long, have ruined the game for me.

The design of the game tries so hard to make you feel certain things or force you to see different points of view ultimately fails which is what turns most gamers away. The chemistry and bond between certain characters feels flat, awkward and unnatural again. Despite the things that went wrong in terms of the narrative, there's a lot of things the game does right that would wouldn't expect from other than Naughty Dog; graphics are stunning, many of my friends who are hardcore pc gamers say that this is one of the most beautiful looking games they've seen. AI is massively improved from the first. Level design is amazing. Sound effects and music is perfect. Combat has evolved massively from the first although can feel repetitive at times. While still a linear experience, areas are much broader and there's so much to see and explore that it can feel overwhelming at times. Like I said the game does a lot of things right as Naughty Dog typically are good at making games, however the narrative and pacing of the game really let it down particular with its anticlimax ending where it could of easily made up for past mistakes. It would be unfair to the devs who worked hard on this for so long and as I said putting the story aside this game is amazing but unfortunately falls short of that so therefore a 7/10 (average) is a perfectly fair score. It has some good aspects and some bad ones. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is good for the most part, and there are really nice parts of the story. The main flaw is making the user play as Abby for ten+ hours. She never grows as a character, never shows any remorse for her actions. Joel was an antihero who did bad things, but still had a heart. Abby is just a straight up villain and psychopath. That said, I do think it's worth playing and has some really cool moments, but all in all is not a masterpiece. Expand

IMO, the game has taken a step back in a few areas in terms of polish, melee combat, and stealth.

I've encountered a few bugs throughout my time playing which while not egregious I did not experience in TLOU 1. This mostly takes place as AI pathing issues and clipping through a wall or floor which requires a restart. Nothing gamebreaking but just kinda annoying in general.

In regards to the melee combat, I feel like the flow of it has suffered in order to make way for the dodge mechanic. I can no longer rush up and surprise them with a melee hit to stun them and either take them out or throw them into a grab. Most of the time doing so involves either getting riddled with bullets immediately or treating it as a normal combat initiation.

Stealth wise, I feel like the things they've tried to spice up the stealth mechanics such as dogs that can catch your scent and chase you or being able to hide in grass to be more difficult to detect, ultimately ends up muddying the stealth play and I wish it was more like the stealth of TLOU 1.

Regarding the enemy AI, I feel like compared to TLOU 1, they are much more likely to instantly shoot you when you pop out of cover to take a shot at them or shoot multiple shots at you in the time it takes to shoot one shot at them but that might just be me so I'm not holding that against it.

Visually, the game is great but some parts are a little too heavy on the film grain where it just seems a bit over-bearing for certain parts of the presentation.

Overall, I think it's a good game. Not terrible, not amazing, but somewhere in the middle.

As much as the story isn't the greatest in my opinion, the graphics, scenery and combat is amazing. I'll be giving this game a rating of 7/10 because of the three things I think that are great about the game and not the story. I seriously can't rap my head round the fact that Joel died a brutal death and how quickly he died. He deserved a way better death and later in the game. Let's also not forget about the ending. Ellie tracks down Abby to go KILL HER and decides to let her live? Like wtf. The whole point of the game was Ellie seeking revenge for the death of Joel and she chooses to let her live? The story really doesn't make sense. She should've just stayed with Dina if she was going to let her live then. People have their opinions about the game and this is mine. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
