This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lazy writing. The best thing about the first game was the dynamic between Ellie and Joel as he rediscovered himself as a father. Killing off Joel at the beginning was a terrible decision. I expected him to die at some point in this game but the way he died at the very beginning seemed pointless and unfulfilling. We waited seven years for this game and have been waiting to see Joel again and we only get live 5 minutes of gameplay with him before he died. THE TRAILER WAS A LIE. It showed Joel going on this adventure with Ellie but in the game Jesse filled that spot. Then you have us play as Abby for 40% of the game and fight Ellie as this person fans hated.(Abby is the one that killed Joel btw) and you try to make us sympathize with this person but her part of the game just felt really dragged out. There was nothing fulfilling about this game or it's story. Really dropped the ball on this one. Expand

It's a ultimately a soulless sequel that failed to deliver what it's promise. The story tries to focus on the human aspect and claim how the humans are the "real monsters" to try to deliver some pseudo philosophical message and forgets it's zombie apocalypse setting. I won't not recommend anyone buying this game even if it was on sale.

Absolutely the best game I've ever played. I'm not a gamer really, just loved the first game as a story. Playing The Last Of Us Part II was such a roller coaster of emotions for me. Stunning graphics, improved game-play mechanics. Great plot, storytelling and dialog. Facial animations are the best the industry has ever seen. Incredible achievement of the developers.

Storytelling falls so short of its original mark, only shining in the briefest of glimpses throughout, but prove weak in comparison to dragging misery the rest of the game offers.

Additional and old characters are poor here and hard to care about, whether their decision making or lack of anything exciting to their story, I personally found myself rooting for absolutely nobody. So what was the point? Animal violence was messed up as well.

No value in revisiting, and severely damages the firsts replay value as well. Shocking... just an absolute horror show and I am sadly disappointed to have to fallout of love with what was one of my favourite franchises. and

Character animations are above anything in video games to date and interact with the environment. Great rope physics.

Gameplay, level design, sequences: 9/10 poorly paced gameplay segments. Amazing accessibility options. great scavenge, upgrade, combat gameplay loop. Hidden areas to explore to upgrade faster. Open world hubs towards beginning of game. Some simple neat puzzles. Some of the best 3rd person shooter combat of all time. Amazing AI. Last of us combat features no hip fire, some stun when you get hit, heavy weapon sway, low fire rate, slightly slow aiming down sights all to make it feel more grounded. So it may not be for everyone. It's not extremely innovative from the first game rather mostly fixed and more challenging on higher difficultues. You also play as another character half way through which makes you have to restart the upgrading. A few memerable sequences including some chases, escapes, skyscrapers, and boss fights.

Story: 5/10 poorly paced by adding flashbacks and skipping time. Characters motivated by petty revenge which is very hard to sympathize with. A lot of choices ellie and abby make or the way they act seem very inconsistent. With the way they all of a sudden feel remorse or let eachother live. Main character from the first game dies. That alone ruins the story for many people and was completely unnessacary.

Baldurs Gate 2 had it, Zelda OOT had it, quite a few others, but for those of you who know, you know why you're a gamer, and it's not for gaining levels and uber dominating pwnz others, it's for the immersion the story and the characters that take you on a journey to another world that you can breathe in and look around in.

The Last of Us had it, and the Last of Us 2 has it. Lovingly crafted and a tribute to gamers.

We live in Polarizing times, it's precient ND crafted a game that allows gamers to explore an alternatives side to an event or set of information. It's not for everyone and I found the Ellie Portion much more satisfying, though I love that we are getting this level of story immersion in a game.

Had we played Abby for more time before the Golf Club incident I think we would have been able to identify with her more. Use the flashbacks to let us play and identify with Abby before we hate her guts for destroying our beloved Character. It was a mistake to make Abby masculine in physical appearance, particularly with little to no explanation for why her physique was so unique in the game world. This design choice raised an already high bar for me to climb in order to identify with Abby's world and motivations.

Lean into the game, you will be rewarded.

Beyond minor gripes, the game was incredible. The gameplay was incredible. The hint system was incredible. The game stays with you after you play it, and draws you back in. Thank you Naughty Dog, I hope you guys lean into the challenge of effective story telling with your games. By far the most talented AAA studio on the planet right now.

It surpassed the original as a sequel and built on the first across multiple facets; puzzles, combat and even dialogue prompts. I really don't see any of the plot holes people have been complaining about. Sure, Neil's leftist politics have left some brush strokes in this Masterpiece production, however the characters are far more than just their LGBT labels. There is representation without compromising on the fluidity of the story or the authenticity of the interactions.

I think the main reason so many people hate the game, is the leaks, which of course should NOT have happened. However, it's not too difficult to avoid having the game spoiled if you know what you are doing online. The second and more pressing issue is how a large portion of the game is spent playing as the antagonist character who kills off a character that is near and dear to the hearts of the audience. The game forces you to try to relate to a character you should naturally hate, and to feel bitterness for a character that you want to remember as this perfect character with no flaws. This is how the devs have made the game as true to life and as true to their characters as possible. In reality there aren't many people who you can say you love unconditionally, due to screw-ups or mishaps on their part. Furthermore, there isn't anybody you feel nothing but hate for. In most cases when you hate somebody, there is pity you feel as well. From my own personal life experience, I know this.

Without offence to any of the other reviewers or players, hating the game is as valid as loving it; everyone has an opinion. Perhaps people are hating the game for the wrong reasons. Going into the experience already having the story spoiled and having confirmation bias towards the game being bad. Perhaps a lot of the player-base don't have the same life experience and emotional acuity as others to fully comprehend that it's possible to hate somebody while relating to them. Therefore, they may be confusing hate for a character with their feelings for the game.

This franchise is designed to stir up these kinds of emotions. NaughtyDog set out to make you hate the antagonist character and did a damn good job based on how much backlash the game is getting. They took a risk; it didn't pay off for the majority. People didn't interpret the story the way they wanted them too. Ultimately it was a story of the selfish elements of forgiveness and how harbouring hate can only lead to guilt and losing the people close to you.

That is the message I interpreted from the story, such was made loud and clear the more I thought back on my experience throughout the game, and is echoed not just in main development arcs, but also in smaller dialogue details too.

So, to those of you who failed to enjoy the game as intended, I forgive your oversight. I hope that anybody who reads this may see the game through my lens and see a different perspective. They may find themselves playing through it again with this in mind and appreciating it.

As for the ending, people claiming it wasn't true to the universe or Ellie's character for it to have ended the way it did... I disagree; you are forgetting that she has spent the last 5 years growing up in a relatively peaceful environment of Jackson, surrounded by nothing but community, friends, and intimate relationships. So, to those of you who say it was not true to her character, look again, and think on what I have stated here.

Now that the elephant is out of the room I can talk about the fun stuff! The graphical detail,
and sound design is stunning. I only wish the PS4 could run it at higher than 60fps, as at times, panning the camera in big open areas created some stutter, even disabling motion blur didn't alleviate.

The combat and puzzles are a vast improvement on the first game. I was getting frustrated with some encounters, but very much in a positive way: "Of course that stupid ***** flanked me, why are they so smart, ****!". The complexity and difficulty really stressed the near misses and desperation of the characters.

I will also be the first to admit that the game is buggy. At one point after I messed with the camera settings, if i backed up into a corner a lot of the environment would disappear allowing me to see where infected or enemy AI were lurking. The AI itself is also buggy at times, with allies walking in front of you as you line up a shot, and enemy AI repeating dialogue prompts on loop. Did it ruin the experience? No, it’s a nit-pick at smaller details. The main issue people have is with the story, which I sincerely hope with another playthrough people will see things in a different light.

Overall, what a rollercoaster of emotions. Even if the negative reviews put you off, I would strongly recommend playing the game at least once. There are lessons to be learnt here.

    Great job NaughtyDog!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fist off, let me start by saying in terms of graphics, voice acting, and game play...this game is everything I could have ever wanted. The combat and stealth are fun, the weapons are cool, and the upgrade system and scavenging make for interesting game play. That's where the positives end. The game has such bad writing and storytelling that it has left everyone I know who loved and cherished the first game miserable and no one even wants to finish the game BECAUSE of the story. You know how bad a game has to be to make a huge fan of the series not want to play a game they waited 7 years for. Yeah, its that bad SPOILERS AHEAD.

Imagine this, you build up a game as "diving deeper into Ellie and Joel's relationship" to kill Joel, one of your most beloved characters, in the worst way possible right at the beginning. We all knew Joel was going to die in this game, and yes he deserved it and it made sense. But to make Joel and Tommy look like complete idiots after surviving 24 years by following a random group down into a basement and giving them their real names.....when would they ever do that...On top of this, the game then makes Ellie watch Joel die and later tries to be like "Oh Abby really isn't that different from Ellie because she also sought revenge and her actions are justified and revenge never helps anyone" No. Just No. If Joel had walked into the operating room in the first game and the daughter of the doctor was standing right there, Joel would not have killed him. Plain and simple. The game tries so hard to paint Ellie and Joel as evil when Abby LITERALLY is shooting up her ownnnn peopleee at the raid of the island...You think Ellie would be shooting her friends from Jackson so easily if they turned on her????No because that's not in her character, or so I thought since you basically made Ellie out to be a selfish idiot and changed all of her character traits from the first game. Also, Ellie has remorse for killing others on her way to find Abby, throwing up after killing Mel. She doesn't want to kill innocent people but is given no choice, yet Abby literally never shows and remorse ever and only helps the 2 scars to make herself look better for Owen. Also helps him cheat on Mel......AND YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO ENJOY PLAYING AS AND SYMPATHIZE WITH ABBY.....if you are going to make us play with the worst character ever...please advertise as such and not fake trailers to make it look like Joel would be in more of the game. Thank you for trashing one of my favorite games ever and now I can no longer go back and enjoy the first game knowing how bad the sequel is. P.S. the only way to fix this is a DLC stating this was all a dream and start from scratch.

You know how easy it would be to write a story for this game. Start the same way, instead of offing Joel, have Ellie say I'm going to the hospital to find out for myself as she still feels deep down Joel is lying. She leaves a note saying where shes going and Dina goes with her to keep her safe. Joel finds note and decides to go after her because he is overprotective. CUT ABBY FROM THE GAME ENTIRELY AND THE WLF. Ellie runs into the scars blah blah blah, has to go through a city full of them. That's 10 hours of fun right there. She can get caught somewhere, perfect time for Ellie Joel flashback when shes knocked out. Joel arrives to save her. They start escaping, the whole Dina pregnant thing happens and Jesse joins the mix because he wants to protect Dina. Jesse dies saving Dina in some cool way and not by getting shot in the face basically off screen and never to be mentioned again. Maybe even have Joel get captured by the scars while helping Ellie and Dina escape. Joel gets taken to the cool island, the best part of the actual game, but make the island bigger and more like a jungle and another 10 hour section, have Dina stay behind at a safe location and promise to come back. Finally save Joel but maybe they are like a really messed up cult and had him get bitten so he slowly turns. While he is dying have him like cry and tell Ellie what happened at the hospital and that he was sorry. Finally Ellie has to shoot Joel and its all sad. Ellie gets help from the two scars to escape the island and they come back to Jackson. Ellie brings back Dina and they start a family and you fade to black with Ellie playing the song Joel played at the beginning to Ellie.

I just wrote a better story in literally 15 minutes than what you came up with in 7 years....Garbage
