This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I won't lie and say I'm the biggest Last of Us fan, that I 100% the game, got it early, etc. However what I will tell you is that it is a good game, the visuals and audio design are gorgeous, the developers added a much-needed coat of paint to the mechanics, it is a very solid base. However, the criticisms come with the story and characters.

I think what NaughtyDog did with the game is bold, killing one of the beloved characters and forcing the player to play as the character who killed them. I won't say I was happy with it, but I could also see that ND wanted to create the narrative that "every story has two sides" and ask that you consider the sympathy towards what Abby has gone through and how it parallel's Ellie's story. There has also been complaints that Ellie would never 'act the way she does' within the game, however, as someone who has watched a close family member die, her anger and spite are understandable and especially in such an uncut setting, it makes sense that she'd feel so strongly as to do what she does.

A lot of other reviews I've read seem to take the game too seriously as if Naughty dog promised them something and then snatched it away. It isn't like that, this game is a new chapter in an already developed story, Ellie is 20 by the end of the story, all she knows is pain and loss. This game isn't about wrapping up Ellie's story, it's showing the end of Ellie's journey and the result of what she has caused.

    The Last Of Us II

The only thing I can complain is the duration of the game, maybe they could have made it a little shorter, but it's ok, don't play it in a single day, take your time. The story was a great one, for me, is the representation of human emotions and their complexities, there is no bad or good pleople, just people that are in pain trying to figure out how to forget and forgive, through revenge, throught loss, maybe taking bad choices, but at last is a great game Expand

Not as good as the first and I don't like some of the forced actions you are required to do to push certain scenes along (the press X to murder during a cut scene was a bit full on). I think this might be why people give it so much hate.

In a movie you are following a character, you don't have to agree with the actions. In video games you have choice... But this does not give it to you.

From the opening scene to the haunting Joel, and Ellie duet as the credits roll. The Last of Us 2 is a wild ride full of gut-wrenching pain, witty banter, and a harrowing tale of revenge, and the rot it leaves in its wake. The Last of Us 2 sets out to drive a message deep into the player, and my God it delivers.

That brings me to the recent controversy surrounding this game. As well as it's unjust and unwarranted review bombing. It makes me sick to see so much work, and effort being spat on, and hated by so many, for such a stupid reason. Even if you choose to dislike the title based on one narrative desition made early on in the game. You have to respect the effort, and love that Naughty Dog put into their game. So many poured everything they had into this title. To see it being treated like this is incredibly heartbreaking. If you're under the impression that this game is bad, based on the influx of negative reviews, I just want you to know. The game is wonderful and creates a world just as morbidly beautiful as the original. Do not let these unfounded reviews sway you away from this awesome experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly I absolutely adored the first game, probably one of my top games ever. So this game already had huge shoes to fill, which probably worked against it in the reviews as the bar was set extremely high. Is this game as good as the first game? I would have to say no. But it stands on its own as a very good game, up there with the best of this generation. I will say that the open world aspects of the game were massively overhyped as you only encounter one area where this occurs early on in the game. This was probably the most enjoyable area and I would have liked more of this. Otherwise you have levels which are fairly linear. I also feel combat was fairly overhyped as it is not vastly different than the first game and is not much of an evolution. Combat however is still fun, a bit more variety in combat and openness in levels would have made this game even better. Ultimately the game is about mans darker nature and how it corrupts everything around it. This game is especially concerned with exploring the idea of moral grey areas and humanizing ones enemies. In real life there are no cartoonish villains, each person has their own rationalizations and motivations and naughty dog wanted to highlight this aspect of human nature. Naughty dog wanted to take you on a journey from hating someone to being able to understand someone. Reflecting all of this internal struggle is the different external factions at war with one another, pushed to the brink of survival. The game is concerned with asking the broader questions about human nature and what choices we will make in regards to one another. Will we choose to continue on a path of hatred, violence and revenge even though it destroys our lives - or are we going to rise above those decisions? Spoiler part - Having loved the first game so much it was definitely hard to lose Joel so quickly, however I feel it was a natural progression and consequence from the last game. It is easy to justify the killing of cannibals or one dimensional villains, but that is not reflective of actual human nature or reality and doesn't provoke any deeper reflection regarding our actions. This game is able to take us on an emotional journey a lot of games do not and judging by its polarizing reception, its clear that it was successful at provoking the emotions it intended. Anyone who would give this game zero to one stars is not being reasonable by any stretch of the imagination. Expand

I loved the first Last of Us (and all the Uncharted games), so I knew that Naughty Dog was capable of publishing excellent games with good to great character stories intertwined. I pre-ordered TLOU2 a few days before it was to be released, and vaguely heard some of the controversy for the first time, but did not seek out any spoilers...and had no idea what I was in for (and nor did I want to know). I figure people that have worked on a story for 5+ years, probably deserve to have the entire store told by THEM, not some spoilsport tw*t on the internet...

So I avoided all spoilers until the game was preloaded on my PS4 Pro...and spent the next 5 evenings playing it completely through...AND...I actually played this game through to the very ending credits before I decided how I felt about it all...

I'm not sure if this review will resonate with the seemingly binary extremists that appear to comprise most the the "users" on this site...but for those of you that prefer to think beyond the hate-spasms of pre-pubescent emotionally crippled plebs...read on.

Before I react to the story which seems to dominate 90% of the reasoning behind most of these reviews, I do want to talk about the game mechanics and design. For me, a
AAA game's mechanics, interface, graphics and sound design are worth about 6 points out of the 10. And I have to give Naughty Dog 6 points here. The graphics, world design, music, atmospheric sound...all were just FLAWLESS. I thought the game mechanics and controls were near flawless...I rarely felt like the controls were unfair or caused me to lose a fight. I really enjoyed always worrying about not quite having enough materials...and it really encouraged me to look through everything in every corner for the extra alcohol or extra bullet. I enjoyed how running low or empty on one weapon's ammo meant I just had to change up my playstyle completely...it forced me to think laterally and out of the box and really made the survival much more tense. The enemy AI was scary (especially on the hardest level), but the companion AI was sometimes lame...I wish companions were more realistically visible to enemies and/or stayed out of sight so it didn't break immersion when enemies couldn't see them standing in front of them. I also wish the puzzles were a bit more thought-provoking and challenging. Overall, this game world looked and felt great!

    Now for the story...
As a fan of most post-apocalyptic stories, I think it's crazy that many of the dissenting fans of Part 2 somehow believed that their beloved characters were all going to live in the sequel. Have we learned nothing? The cordyceps infected world is a nasty one...rife with destruction, death, violence, and misery. Did we somehow think that a GAME set in a world where nearly everyone has either been killed, turned into mushroom monsters, or become part of a nihilistic militaristic cult...was going to feature Joel and Ellie dancing through sunshine soaked fields singing Kumbaya? Jesus, that's dumb.

The original game came out what, 7 years ago?...that means fans of the original are supposed to have MATURED SEVEN FREAKING YEARS...and somehow, some of these so called fans of the original game have, because one of their VIDEO GAME characters got killed...have debased themselves to sending hateful, misogynistic, anti-semitic, death threats to freaking VOICE ACTORS, as well as story directors and video game developers? OMG.

It's a "zombie" game set in a fictitious world for god's sake! CHARACTERS, which aren't real in case you forgot, are gonna die. It creates drama, which apparently you guys all love! I liked Joel as much as anyone, but come on...he's no angel! Maybe you remember the first game...in which JOEL and Ellie slaughtered their way all the way to Salt Lake City, literally leaving a trail of their murder victims behind them. Yes, I still liked their characters...but let's call a spade a spade...they killed a ton of people...ultimately for NO REASON. They killed sons and brothers and husbands and yes...even dads.

Killing people has consequences no matter how good your intentions or how "justified" your revenge may seem. And as much as I didn't like Abby at first, being forced to play as her was bold...and for ME...as an emotionally mature adult, was truly moving. I went from not liking Abby at all, to practically crying in the end, for BOTH Abby and Ellie...having lived through both their pain and having seen how all their hate and anger only led to the death of even more people they loved. I cried, and I cheered when Ellie finally understood (just as Abby had with Lev's help earlier)...the only way forward is to to let go. I'm a 40 year old man, and the ending made me cry. Not all stories can give us what we want! That's not life! Sometimes we get what we need...

It’s easy to dehumanize your enemies and kill them without thought- it’s easy to seek revenge and live in hate. It’s harder to let go and forgive. Both sides of the story were done beautifully and by the last major fight scene I was so torn and upset— I didn’t want to lose anyone and I saw each’s motivations. Gameplay wise, the mechanics are quite similar to it's predecessing game and offers an improved aspect to it's game quality, providing an initial similarity to how the game mechanics work. I'm my opinion this was an adequate measure to make it a more gamer friendly system. In terms of the story, this review would have gotten a 10/10 if some elements of the story weren't so choppy, messy or rushed. In the first half of the game, I found it to be quite good honestly apart from earlier events that shaped the basis of this 'John wick' story concept of getting revenge and personally, I quite enjoyed this. It was still ok during the second half to me although it caused a somewhat controversial perspective to the game but it was only during the end of the game that I thought the game was becoming a bit too choppy and rushed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let’s start off with this: anyone who saw the leaks and formed an opinion of the game based primarily on that content should NOT be listened to when it comes to rating this game. People do not understand where Druckmann took the story because they were stuck in TLOU 1. But before I get into the why’s and how’s of this game, let’s talk about gameplay.

    GAMEPLAY
You will have anxiety attacks. The combat mechanics and refined and impactful. Your ammo runs out fast, the AI is smart, the environments are open-ended enough for ballsy trigger-fingers or sneaky ninjas. The infected are menacing, with a touch more humanity than the previous game. You really do have to think before you act. There are insane action scenes as well as soft, well-paced moments of carefully crafted exposition. GRAPHICS
    It’s Naughty Dog. CHARACTERS
This is where the game shined to me. Every character is three dimensional. Who is bad? Who is good? You can’t tell. That is the point. In the context of this tired, fungus-ridden post-apocalypse, there is no good and evil; there is people and the extent they’ll go to survive and protect. Ellie progresses through the story losing her humanity and becoming more like, you guessed it, Joel. Abby is a misunderstood victim: Joel took everything from her. The characters all put in what they need to, but they don’t necessarily get a “fair” send-off. And guess what: they shouldn’t. This world is not fair. NARRATIVE
This is the big one. The story is meant for people who understand the CONTEXT. The story is NOT meant for people who want a hero-based plot. Joel isn’t a hero. Ellie isn’t innocent. People were angry because Joel died the way he did. But they fail to realize that you as the player did the exact same things to others in the first game as they were done to Joel in this one. The idea is that even though Joel was presented as the GOOD GUY to us, that doesn’t make him the hero.

The story is meant to show the player one thing: perspective. This is why you WATCH Abby kill Joel, and THEN play through her flashback. It is meant to challenge you. Apparently, we as gamers have not evolved past the “shoot and run” mentality of video games. Apparently, few of us can understand Naughty Dog’s vision. If you are thinking about getting this game, or if you are unsure of what to think now that you’ve reached the credits, look at it this way: there is absolutely nothing that this world owes to you. Do not play this game if all you can fathom in video games is a black and white hero story. This is meant to question your belief, it is meant to make you uncomfortable.

The story is intense and not always going where you want it to go. This is not a bad thing. I even caught myself yelling at Ellie for making a stupid decision. In the first game we already learned that Ellie is a strong independent girl, now she is a strong young women and so is most of the women you will meet on your journey. They grew up in this harsh and unforgiving world and killing is part of survival.
Playing different characters was an eye opener to me as it forced me to look at things from a different perspective. It was not always comfortable, but very necessary. Better story than most movies.
