The game is really good. The gameplay, graphics, character development, etc. are great. The story may take some risks, but it's still great. Many people hate that it captures a different theme than the previous game, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad. Overall, I think Naughty Dog did a great job of making players invested in the story

Excellent character models, immersive environments, tons of small details thrown in everywhere to make each area feel unique. The digital acting is amazing, as well, and all the characters seem to move very realistically both in game and in cutscenes. The execution animations are brutally realistic, with flesh handing from faces and gore spattering in every direction, after a close range head shot. Arms being shredded to pieces, with ragged pieces clinging to the split bone from a shotgun blast. Blood pouring in fountains from a neck wound made by a switchblade thrust aggressively into the jugular. Not recommended for the weak of heart, but, absolutely high quality for the themes the game was going for.
Sound & Music- Again, excellent. The voice acting is movie par, making the characters truly pop to life in every instance. Enemy sound design is well done, as well. Hearing the stacatto growl of a Clicker from just out of your view, echoing softly through an enclosed space makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The whistles of the Scars growing ever closer and more frantic as you take them out one by one adds a real depth to even the most basic of enemies. The sounds of melee weapons bashing against skulls, knives piercing flesh, and enemies gurgling on their own blood as they fall to the ground, enemies crying out for their friends or begging for their own lives as they crawl away injured, even dogs whimpering sadly when they discover the body of their fallen masters, are so well done, its easy to cringe when it all comes together. Environmetally, they really pull you in. Rain falling on different section of a car or different surfaces, sounds different, and exactly how you'd imagine.
Gameplay- There are many improvements from the first title. Namely, better enemy AI, the ability to go prone, more environmental options (i.e. smashing windows to draw attention or create new routes) and more open areas to explore and devise combat strategies within. One complaint is that certain sections drag on a bit longer than they should, and there are some underwhelming Infected encounters sprinkled throughout, but, as a whole, very well done.
Story- This will obviously be the most divisive section. As mentioned before, the digital and voice acting is excellent and serves the characters well. The overall story did draw together very well for me, with one particular section mid-way feeling very abrupt, initially, but serving more of a purpose to the overall story by the end. Your mileage may vary, depending on expectations going in, or what sort of stories you generally enjoy. Its decently long for a story based game (25-30 hours), and does tend to feel as if certain sections drag on a bit (see gameplay section), but, by the end it felt very much worthwhile. There are points where it felt as if they may have tried to include too much in the game, but, as a stand alone title, the story is head and shoulders above many other titles. Much like the first, the stand out elements are character moments spread throughout and moral quandaries. My score actually improved a bit after beating the game, and having some time to re-examine and think about certain elements of it. There will be differing ideas on the game logic, plot choices, presentation, or pacing of some certain situations, with no argument (positive or negative) really having 100% accuracy, unless you play it for yourself. I personally found many of the complaints presented for the story to be present in many other very well received titles, the first game included. The fact that this particular section will be either the strongest or weakest element of the game for most shows just how truly divisive the story is, and only proves that personal experience of it overrides hearsay. Overall, I'd recommend giving it a shot, and deciding for yourself. Unfortunately, review bombing and media controversy has skewed the scores fairly drastically (both positive and negative), so an overall consensus will be difficult to find. My final rating falls somewhere between and 8-9/10, with my guess being an average users experience to fall somewhere between a 6-9/10 rating, depending on story preference, No matter your opinion on story, the overall quality of every other element of the game is above and beyond what you could expect from modern titles, so I'd expect nothing less than that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Reading through the user reviews here makes me more depressed than the grim, post apocalyptic world of TLoU series. Seriously, you guys made it seem like the story is SO disgustingly bad written, that I almost haven’t bought the game. I’m glad I gave it a shot after all. Now, we all know the game is visually stunning, the acting is incredible and the gameplay, while loved by some folks, has never been in the spotlight. So I’m just gonna focus on the story, cause this part’s been getting so much sh*t and I don’t think it deserves it. Part II is a commentary on what Joel did in the first game. Joel decided to sacrifice humanity’s future in exchange for his own comfort and paternal instincts. His relationship with Ellie was absolutely unique, which made me go “HELL YES, LET’S SAVE HER” when I played the original TLoU, but let’s face it - morally it was very questionable. Part II takes Joel’s actions and shows consequences in a way that made me devastated, but deep down I felt Joel got what he deserved. I think killing Joel off within the first hours was brutal, but fully justifiable.
The one thing that was bugging me throughout the game was Ellie - why is she so blinded with revenge, why is she willing to sacrifice literally everything she has just to avenge Joel. As the game moves forward, we find out about her complicated relations with Joel once she realized what he did in Salt Lake City. I felt for Joel for the way Ellie rejected him every time they were on screen in Part II. I think Ellie’s guilt for the way she treated him was the main driver of the events in Seattle. Again, story is intense, but fully justifiable.
Then there’s Abby. This is where most critique hits hard, and I understand why, yet disagree. The game forces you to play as the character that you utterly hate. Yes, at first it was a little off (kinda annoying with having to rebuild all gameplay skills all over), but shortly Abby turned out to be a truly compelling character that I really cared for. It made me consider that mindless killing from another perspective - not just the perspective of “the bad guys” because Abby’s journey goes beyond group divisions. By the time Ellie got to her on that beach I was thinking to myself “NOO, JUST FORGIVE HER, GO BACK TO THE FARM TOGETHER”. That’s how Abby and Lev grew on me. All in all I think that this “loads of plot holes” and “unlikeable characters” nonsense is just fanboys getting angry, because they didn’t want their original character to be brought to justice, and couldn’t stand a more granular approach to story telling.
Another thing people disliked was the fact, that most of the story took place in one city. Personally, I think the game really benefited from it, you could really get the grim vibe of the city, feel the topography of post-apo Seattle and soak into the bigger-than-life conflict between two massive groups. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the journey in TLoU, but would I like to see it again in Part II? Probably not.
My main problem with the game was pacing - at times I felt overwhelmed with the amount of action, horror and tragedy, it’s like the game wouldn’t stop jump-scaring me. For instance, just before meeting scars for the first time, Ellie gets stuck in a building filled with Stalkers and Clickers. This is a very tense, creepy and long sequence - a lot of zombies, no lights, few resources to pick up. Then she finally breaks out, falls into the river and lands in the sewers. “WOW, THAT WAS INTENSE” I thought, and started looking for new resources, just to be freaking jump-scared by a wall clicker 2 minutes later. And these moments were just too frequent, with not enough “giraffe moments”.
But all in all, I get what creators wanted to achieve - a much darker tone than the original game. And you made it, it’s just not something I’d like to go through again.
To sum up - I liked the story. I feel like it’s compelling and a lot of criticism is just anger coming from people who expected Joel to live happily ever after, or those who couldn’t stand Ellie becoming sort of the villain.

I understand why people are upset but, it’s just a game, and although it’s not the story I wanted, I still loved it and thought it was great. A lot of people who haven’t played the game seem to be against it due to the supposed PC stuff in the game which I didn’t see much of, there was tiny bits of it in the game. Also, Abby is not trans! If that’s the sole reason on hating the game then you need a reality check, women can be muscular too. Expand

I love that you saw both sides of the story and made you realise (more) that there’s no good or bad. It’s all about perspective.
Of course I don’t LOVE Abby but I understand her. She made some **** up decisions but so did ellie. I love how the game showed their way of dealing with loss and anger etc and how at the end the stoped that circle of revenge and how they both Abby and Ellie grew from that.
Of course it’s not that much of a happy game as expected and there’s not really a “happy ending” but it’s close to realistic which I kinda loved. The only thing I didn’t like is the fact that we played for Abby for that long and the part where we had to fight Ellie as Abby (I liked that part but hated that I had to hurt Ellie it was pretty intense..) I if I kinda liked that though but yeah overall if you really think this game and see it the way the writers and producers wanted to you will enjoy it as much as I did probably. But either way it’s worth giving it a shot but actually finish the game and not leave it to actually understand the point of the game.

The applaud the writers and creators taking the path that they did with the storyline. No other games or publisher would take such risk with the characters so beloved in the 1st game. Sure, at the end they player will feel emotionally drained. But I think it will open the story to a 3rd and final installment.

But the highs were so worth it in the end. The game was really damn depressing but it also had beautiful moments, and I think those moments were elevated by the contrasting dour elements of the game. Considering all the technical aspects of the game, it surpasses anything I've seen. Not much to be said other than that its a masterpiece in all production elements ranging from the animations teetering on the edge of a truck to Gustavo's score setting the mood during a cutscene. Gameplay became repetitive, but after replaying a bit more with different custom difficulties I found myself enjoying sections of the game just in my free time. My one critique is the same as everyone's, the Abby sections being a bit too long. I just wanted to get through as I never cared for the character as much as Ellie. I understood and empathized with Abby when she was given context but not enough to want to play 8-10 hours of her on what felt largely like sidequests. But when the game returns to Ellie's perspective, the game reached its high point.

The themes are so many more than just revenge. The game personally hit me with thoughts about forgiveness, regret, moving on from things we can't change, but most of all, appreciating the good things we have, because they don't last forever. And when they do leave us, we just need to learn, believe in ourselves and bet that future days will be better.

For me, the game was a 4 act structure, or at least was easy to talk about that way. There is Jackson Intro, Ellie Seattle, Abby Seattle, and the end. Each of these were so different I could rate them individually. Jackson was a 9 and could have been higher if it was longer, Ellie's Seattle was probably an 8 as it dragged on a bit, Abby's Seattle was a 7 because it basically had the same issues as Ellie's Seattle but with less emotional connection to the characters, and the ending being a strong 10. I think a 9 is a good rating based off of my experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the greatest games I’ve ever played aside from the first TLOU. It shows a different side to Ellie and aren’t any real “good and bad guys”. I think Naughty Dog could have flowed the game a little better by maybe showing Joel killing Abbeys father before Abbey shows up in Jackson and kills him to make us feel more sympathy towards Abbey but instead they killed Joel first then told Abbey's story. After she kills Joel, we automatically hate her and the rest of the former fireflies that are there and no matter what there backstory was, we won’t forgive them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game did exactly what it set out to do.
I am not gonna sit here and talk about graphics and gameplay because that's not what TLOU has ever really been about. It's about really taking you to the limit emotionally, it makes you feel the characters Hate, anger, pain, depression as well as reasoning for each and all actions...
I found myself in tears often in the game and in absolute aw at how this all was unfolding. Yes you play as the person who kills Joel and why?.... because Naughty Dogg builds this hate inside you at a level that you despise Abby and you want nothing more than to see her suffer... And then you play through her story and form a bond with her and the characters in her life...you form sympathy towards her and see the pain Joel caused when he murdered her father...and you realise the love you have for these characters, Joel and Ellie Stems purely from the fact that you share the same perspective as those characters( from the first game) and you forget that it's that exact perspective that blinds you from the ripple effects and consequences of their choices and actions...so when you play as Abby and realise Abbys perspective...it changes everything in the way you think and feel about all these characters and their stories... To Ellie Abby is the monster who took Joel away from her, To Joel the monsters are the people who tried to take Ellie away from him and to Abby Joel is the monster who took her father from her... That's excluding all the other character development in the game(each side losing more loved ones to this dark path) basically in my opinion what Naughty Dogg achieved here is to create a story and narrative so immersed and visceral that it completely goes over alot of people's heads...years from now, Mark my words this game will be hailed as one of the greatest ever made

Hatred is an ugly, bitter thing. Revenge (as a conditional concept founded upon hatred) is an even more painful and destructive state of mind. For anyone who has experienced the depth of loss that the main characters in TLOU2 go through, you know this all too well. Sometimes we allow emotions to consume us, at times even to define us, and ultimately that is the narrative standpoint that this game requires of you. And by require, I mean you quite literally (in the game world) have to commit gruesome acts of violence in the name of survival, while in the pursuit of vengeance. But ultimately this isn’t violence for the sake of entertainment, shock value, or even cheap thrills.

The violence you commit, and the violence you are equally subjected to exist in this world because of the choices that have been made, and because of the mindsets and experiences that have been brought to the table.

If you have ever lost yourself in a downward spiral of increasingly worse decisions while holding on to a singularly reasonable motivation, this game will feel simultaneously unpleasant and relatable. If you have not, it will likely feel like a bit of insanity to be muddled through as quickly as possible. Either way, it’s brutal, because it has to be.

This isn’t causal story-telling. This isn’t Paperboy on SNES. This isn’t even Westworld-level drama. This is pain; this is anguish; this is dedication and resolve; this is an interactive experience that makes you feel more authentically and deeply than is sometimes comfortable. That is to say it’s accurate, engaging, and honest; what more could one want or expect from such a thing?

(Post Script) And for those people who care more about the sexual preferences of some of the characters depicted in the game than the deeper narrative aspects, you’re focusing on the wrong damn thing...
