Beautiful and deep, it’s definitely a masterpiece. You think you reached the end but the game keeps going and going... I loved how the story was told.

Nice combat, nice game-play, very nice graphic, next-gen game.
But all of that, can't be compared to the story.
The story is fully disrespecting the player and the first game. Forcing the player to play the most hated character is not something people wanted to in a game. if the story was mediocre, i would love to rate this to 7 or 8 because of all the combat, game-play, and graphics.

The character we've been waiting years to see died within the first 2 hours, and its like the game laughs at us. Abby was a completely annoying, obnoxious, sloppy, terrible character to play and go against. She kills off our favorite character, Dina (in whom was pregnant) she nearly gets killed, Jesse dies, and Tommy almost dies. The ending itself is in a whole different realm of disappointing, lame, and boring. Making everything seem like it was all for nothing. 2/10 DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In 2020, there is so much going on. I just want to enjoy a good game, but instead, TLOU 2 gave me a nightmare.
This is a great disappointment. I am a big fan of Naughty Dog studio since Uncharted 1,2,3 & 4 as well as Last of us. The whole development team from Last of us part 2 seems don't understand the core success of the first game. It's not about gameplay, its about the characters and story. In part 2, they decided to throw them all away; characters are disposable for the sake of the story. If Naughty Dog is so confident about their game, why didn't they promote Abby in the first place and let us know that we will be controlling Ellie and Abby in this game? The answer is simple; they know the reason why we bought this game, coz we wanna see more interaction between Joel and Ellie. So they decided to give us a fake trailer and lure us into buying this piece of garbage. I know Joel will die, but the way you treat him is unacceptable. And still, try so hard to make Abby likable and sympathy her. AGAIN, I don't care about her. No matter how hard ND tries, I still won't like Abby. Even you gave her better weapons, better gameplay. Sorry, I just can't relate to her or what so ever.
The beauties of the first game are characters driven the story, but in part 2 is story-driven characters, which led to unreasonable action for different characters, such as Joel, Ellie, and Tommy. Naughty Dog, please stop finding excuses for yourself. We, gamers, do not care about your PC stuff. If you can get us a good story, none of that matters. I hope ND can learn from this mistake and bring us more good games in the future. I still have hope for you, please don't let me down.

And what it does get right, it gets stunningly, remarkably right, on a level never paralleled before in video games, and that achievement dominates.

This game takes you to an emotional place. It may not be a place you wanted to go. It's almost like going through a rough break-up. Yeah, it sucks, but on the plus side, you find listening to your favorite songs is moving you like it hasn't in years. Evoking that kind of emotion through a video game is...well, when's the last time anyone has pulled that off? Has it been done before EVER?

There are flaws. The pacing in the middle feels off. The game is long, and it's mechanics get redundant. It doesn't at all feel neat and streamlined. On the story side, some things have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, and other things require thought to make sense. It's arguable that one line of dialogue, or some different editing, could solve the puzzle to making this a smoother experience in some places.

...but there are no major 'plot holes'. Please don't let people tell you there are. Most everything people evoke as one, is either a character flaw, or them missing explanations that are there in the game. Plus, realize that if you want to dislike a piece of media, it's very easy to find reasons to do it. The original Star Wars movie has more weak writing, bad acting, and questionable elements than this game does, but people love it and buy into it because they like the fantasy world it sells them, and enjoy going along. This game, in parts, is deliberately telling you things you don't want to hear, and challenging you with them. Some people did not enjoy that, and even went so far as to reject the maker's intentions in doing so.

There are some people that will never be happy with the choices this game makes, or what it wants to be instead of what they wanted it to be. Fan service it is NOT. But so many people have not been able to get this game out of their heads. It's inspired more discussion, fascination, and dwelling in its space than the first game did, and maybe more than any game ever has. It's something pretty much never tried before in a AAA video game. I'm happy it exists, and I'm happy I experienced it. If you want a more generic third-person shoot-em-up, you have 1000 other titles to choose from. This is something else, and possibly something landmark and special. Time will tell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, almost done with my 2nd playthrough..but I've seen the ending maybe eight times by now..so I get the idea.

    Negatives first:

1.) I've seen some others say this and I agree..this should have been Last of Us 3..if there was going to be such a thing. I can deal with Joel meeting a similar fate..but ALL of these new characters should have been built up way more prior.

Flashbacks and perspective absolutely does help..but having them not come across as random people would have been much better in the justification for such a BOLD move, imo!

It's not just Abby, who has some redeemable qualities like so many others say..it's not..but she could have been given way more personality.

Now, maybe they'll fill in the blanks with the show that's due out. Maybe, maybe not and while I PERSONALLY like/agree with the ending..they didn't do themselves a lot of favors to the general fan.

2.) The dogs. Game-wise..it's a good tactic..but I'd rather they just kept using mines..or turrets..or cameras. Yeah, that's generic as hell...but generic beats me having to kill any more of them. Bravo to the dog that was mo-capped for this, btw!

3.) How Tommy/Joel were initially trapped.

It would have made a lot more sense if Abby was actually the one that saved them..and then they had to follow her to where she was staying.

Whether you agree with what Joel did was 'right'/justified..that's up to you..but they DID save her.
Also..I would have liked to hear ANY back/forth between her/Joel about the elephant in the room.
    Same with Ellie/Abby..but especially Joel/Abby.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Everything else was GREAT.

The combat is SO MUCH better, visuals, the flashbacks were extremely well done, sfx/voices/music, graphics. The photomode was nice..all the new random options were fantastic.

You can change the controls (which I didn't) is always a plus

The new factions were cool..especially the seraphites.

The ending...a lot of people wanted VENGEANCE. Well, what was killing Abby going to do and more importantly..do you think Joel would want her to do that? Why'd she go there at all you say?
Well, she obviously felt one thing and her mind was eventually changed at the end. No one else has done that before?

Also...if he had to do it all over again..I know he said he'd do just that..but I don't know..maybe knocking them out or pushing the doctors out of the way would have been a smarter move on his part?

Anyways...I do not think Joel would want Ellie to finish Abby. No matter how much hate she has..how much hate you might have for her..and again..just projecting here..but for how much Joel is shown to be softened in all the flashbacks..I just don't see it.

Others said it should have been a choice to kill Abby. Well, that wouldn't really work if Abby/Lev were the main characters in TLOU 3 (which I wouldn't recommend (at this point))?!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically..I think this game/story will age a lot better once the show is out (to a varying degree).

Underdeveloped/seemingly random characters and dogs..those are my issues (currently).

Oh and the stadium the Wolves are at...don't know if it was the Huskies/Seahawks..that looked INCREDIBLE.

... and nice job of hiding all the cards/coins!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In closing..this story is ALL about perspective. Who is the hero? Who is the villain? If this person does that thing to that person..does it catch up to that person 15 years from now in that way..or this way? Was that person justified? If not, why not?

It did a great job creating/furthering the conversation and I appreciate that. There are no villains..no heroes..just the person/people you empathize with more than the other. 8.25 out of 10

Punishing in many ways, no doubt. But it was absolutely thrilling. I finished it last night and it well deserves the praise it gets from critics. Literary essays could be written about this story and its characters. The way the game forced me to switch perspectives and view certain characters and moral viewpoints directly through the gameplay was unlike any game I've played. Many people hate this aspect. They hate that they're made to sympathize with the enemy. I get that feeling. It's uncomfortable, and a desire rises up to reject the game on those grounds. But if you can get passed that knee-jerk reaction, you will come to realize that the story is better for the controversial choices made.

Another complaint I've heard is that this is just a cliche story about revenge. But that's missing the nuance. This story is about perspective. It is about perspective within the context of revenge, and by focusing on perspective an entirely different story and gameplay experience is created, one in which the player, if taking an evenhanded view, is not entirely sure for whom they are rooting. Nobody in this story has the moral high ground. They're all damaged, and the damage done to them perpetuates a cycle. These characters are complex, both the protagonists and antagonists, and this game wants to us to experience their complexities in deep, unsettling ways—ways in which we as players might learn lessons to apply to the real world. But you have to see through your own expectations of the game to truly appreciate what the developers have done here.

I've read and seen video reviews from irate fans, and while I understand their perspective I couldn't disagree more with much of their gripes. This may not be the story that some wanted, but it is not a bad story by any stretch of the imagination. It is a natural evolution from the first game's story and themes, and it directly deals with the repercussions of the characters' actions. It makes perfect sense. Some fans argue that the characters do no act like they would in the first game and that this leads unjustifiably to the inciting incident that kicks things off. Thus the inciting incident doesn't ring true. I feel these fans are, again, missing the nuance, the nuance of the situation the characters find themselves in. These fans can't accept that our supposed heroes are capable of being forced into an untenable situation that could end badly. The world built in these games is not a world built for happy endings. Our heroes may not be the heroes we think they are from a certain perspective.

Then there's the LGBTQ representation. Yes, we have a lesbian couple. They kiss and cuddle. Is it over the top? pandering? Absolutely not. There is no agenda. The story just happens to have two women who fall for each other like any man and woman might. You know, like in real life. Their relationship is central to the story, but not on the basis of it being a lesbian relationship. Maybe two moments occur in the entire game that addresses bigotry. They're small aspects, and they're realistic and fleeting. The story moves on. But you know what? I shouldn't have to make excuses like saying that these moments are fleeting and thus not a big deal. Bigotry happens in real life. People experience it. Showing it in a game or depicting people who experience it shouldn't be an issue. Ever. I repeat, it's not an agenda. It's real life. There could be an argument that Naughty Dog played up the lesbian relationship in marketing. But that's not the game. Move on.

As for the gameplay, it's very recognizable to the first game. It's better in many ways with more variety, and it's very fluid. If you loved the first game's gameplay and didn't get tired of it then you'll love the gameplay here, even more so. As a player you are gently eased into learning skills as the game progresses. As things ramp up you never feel left behind, but gameplay remains intense. Intense is the best way to describe the combat. The music feeds into this feeling. It's very satisfying, but disturbing.

This game is much longer than the first. My campaign was around 40 hours. I explored as many nooks and crannies as possible (but still didn't find everything) and really took in the beautiful scenery. The graphics are jaw-dropping. I will admit that at some points there was some repetitiveness. Scavenging can get a little old, especially toward the end. But the detailed environments always make exploration fun. The combat and stealth components and level designs allow for a variety of ways to approach every situation. I played it on the default difficulty and died a few times here and there. I imagine on harder difficulty levels that precise strategy becomes very important and will add to the game's replay value.

I couldn't recommend this game more highly.
