like all the fans that expect a better story. so joel ruined ellie's life for saving her, right? wth!!!

The gameplay is just phenomenonal, the map gives you the feel of an open-world and there is a lot of things to explore. The environment and the ways you can react with objects is really good too.
It really sucks that there were leaks and that helped the game get even more hate. I personally loved it and it's more than i could have asked for. Congratulations to Naughty Dog for making this masterpiece!

It somehow justifies almost everything and you sympathize with everyone. Essentially the game (and the franchise) highlights brutal humanity in the finest way possible. Though I'll agree that the ending was quite stretched out and felt a little unnecessary, and there are a few parts that irritated me a little. But overall still a good game. Expand

Well, I would have to say that the people giving this game 0 to 3 ratings are overreacting quite a bit. That said, many of the complaints people have about this game are totally valid. That said, many of the complaints people have about this game are totally valid. For large parts of the story, characters show little to no emotion about anything that's going on, and everyone is just hellbent on revenge, no matter how alien their indifference to murder might seem to their character. Ellie and Tommy spend no time thinking about how, just maybe, Joel kind of brought his fate on himself. Ellie herself says that she doesn't think she can forgive Joel for what he did in TLOU 1, so why on earth would the people on the other side of the equation be able to forgive him? To them, and I would imagine to most who played the game, Joel is, well, kind of f'ing evil. Ellie and Tommy are decently intelligent people, and yet they never even begin to explore any internal conflict or potential empathy with those they seek vengeance against. It's super frustrating. Even when that development does happen within the space of literally 1 second near the end of the game, it isn't explored or questioned, but just kind of happens out of nowhere in a relieving but pretty dumb way. That, at least, is my main beef with the game.

As for actually playing the game, it's really similar to the first installment. The mechanics are more or less the same, but smoothed out a bit (I only found the game clunky in a few ways that didn't impact my enjoyment terribly. The shooting felt really smooth, though), and the skill trees/supply gathering at all very familiar. I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, really. It might have been interesting to add some new elements, but it could also have just bogged down an already decently robust combat system. It's super stressful at points, as we would expect, but does an okay job of breaking up the really creepy bits with only somewhat creepy bits. Definitely more jump scares than I would have liked.

The acting is as good as you would expect. Shannon Woodward does a great job as Dina, who despite a limited role is a bit of a highlight of the game (despite apparently having 0 judgement), as does Laura Bailey as Abby, who actually I thought was pretty cool but to each their own. The thing is, the interactions between the main characters and their companions are really good, but just don't really happen enough and generally aren't as deep as you might like.

With most of the negative out of the way, the game is actually pretty good. It's not ground breaking like its predecessor, but that is an insanely high bar. Character development does fall a bit flat, but that doesn't make the story entirely bad. the POV change part way through I actually found really interesting and refreshing. Playing through the second half makes you view the first half in new context, a context that even still isn't really explored enough in games. The game also looks great and for the most part is fun to play, though there is definitely some padding in there. The ending is, well, it's not what you want. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand there is some poetry to it that contains a nuance the rest of the game can't seem to find, but on the other hand something is just... missing. There is a definitive lack of closure and honestly postmodern endings are just not it anymore. Still, I can't help but feel that this game's biggest flaw is that it's the sequel to The Last Of Us, and perhaps it was never possible to recapture that depth. Everything about it is seems cool, and on the surface level is cool, but isn't fleshed out. In most games I really don't think that would be a big deal, but here it is. I want to get to know Lev and Yara more, I want to know more about the Seraphites, about how WLF came to be and what they want. I want to learn more about Dina's story, I want there to be stretches of the story where literally everyone you meet doesn't want to kill you on sight, because so much of the game is actually really cool and good, but so little of it is embellished on.

Basically, this game is that is really, really good, except there's too much of what you don't really want, and not enough of what you do want, and so while I still enjoyed playing it (a lot!), there were too many flat moments for it to stand out as a truly great game. I really hope they consider a trilogy, because I know there's enough still there to make something remarkable.

And also all the people complaining about how it's too intersectional can gtfo.

I owned it on PS3 then bought it on PS4 for the upgraded graphics, TLOU Part II is a terrible story - it's like it was written by someone that had no connection at all to the 1st TLOU. The only connections I made to this story was when I play Ellie or the flashbacks to Ellie and Joel (loved the spaceship launch part - I cried). When I had to play as Abby I felt nothing (no fear of dying, didn't care, no joy at her victories, didn't care, no sympathy for her when she was hit or hurt or taken captive, didn't care). I want to give this a 0 but due to the graphics, scenery, game mechanics and playing as Ellie I give it a 3. I will tell you that I wont be buying it when it comes out on PS5 and I will never buy a Naughty Dog game again on the faith that you actually give a crap about your fans. Naughty Dog has the right to make a story that they own the rights to and I have the right to not to give them my money unless they earn my business back with thoughtful well written story driven games like TLOU1. Sure the visuals and graphics were stunning - I was expecting that - and the the gameplay was decent, but masterpiece? GTFOH with that BS. I wanted to give this a 0, but I'm trying to be somewhat objective. You kill Joel in the first couple of hours and then make us play as Abby and expect us to feel some kind of empathy for her? WTF!? Joel was beloved, and in comes this crazy b*tch who we have no background knowledge or understanding of who bludgeons his face in with a golf club. I was looking for ways to kill her as I played her. Then, Ellie goes on a killing rampage to avenge Joel - the only reason I stayed to the end - but she lets Abby go because love trumps hate or something? Dumpster fire. This game was bait and switch on crack and one huge middle finger to those who loved the original. I will never play it again. In fact I'm going to find myself an old world priest to have it exercised from my mind. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It would be so easy for me to trash this game for ten straight paragraphs but I’ll keep it short... Everything about the first game fans loved was almost completely done away with. The only parts I enjoyed were a few flashback sequences with Joel. Everything else was poorly written and executed. Naughty Dog decided to go the political route, when all fans wanted was to see the main characters of the first game continue their journey together. The graphics were amazing, like we all knew they would be, but everything else felt empty and literally pointless. Nothing is achieved with this story and the characters do not grow in any way. Joel’s arc was utterly disgraceful and his character disrespected. Ellie is not relatable in this at all compared to the first installment. My only hope is that the fans’ disappointment will help other gaming studies learn how to write better and not make the same mistake twice. I hope. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest,
Joel acts so much out of character.
He was always cautious and never trusted anyone new, understandably considering how Sarah died in part 1.
He would never put himself in such a vulnerable state among people he just met.
I understand why he had to go however I feel like it could have been done better without disrespecting the character.
It feels shallow and a cheap way to get people to feel the need for vengeance.

However, if there is justice in vengeance.
Then such justice will only breed more vengeance.
Thus triggering an eternal cycle of hatred.
This is the flaw of every revenge plot.

Ellie takes too long to feel the guilt of her actions to the point where it seems comical.
Right after murdering countless people to get there.
The game betrays the original characters to fit the narrative and introduces new ones that no one cares about.

People played the first game for the relationship between Ellie and Joel and the search for light even in the darkest of worlds.
Ellie and Joel were not heroes or the good guys, they were survivors.
This game betrays all of that for a story of unearned vengeance against characters we don't care about , then the game tries to do a spin on perspective and asks us to buy into their drama.
It's a narrative disaster which could have done way better with some proper order and storyline structure

otherwise, The game is a technical marvel and is gorgeous in every sense of the word.

Players who have felt that bond, could not accept what has become of our duo. The amount of utter disrespect to our beloved characters that this game has shown is unforgivable. I cried my eyes out, and even after the shock- I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I even laid awake restless the night after I played. Naughty Dog does not understand how much Joel meant to us, or they just don't care, regardless of either, I will not be finishing this game. Some folks are upset about the story, saying that characters do or do not 'deserve' certain things and that ND totally blew it. I could not disagree more. The story fits the brutal tone of the last of us world, provides several twists along the way, and concluded in the way I hoped for by the end of the journey. This game may not be the story that you specifically wanted for these characters, but it's a damn good tale all the same.

My main criticism is the chronology. The order of the game could probably be changed to make things flow better, but again, overall a fantastic game.
