How do you bomb such a perfect game? The last of us made us feel connected to the characters and showed a father-daughter relationship which everyone loved. We never wanted this for the 2nd game. We wanted Ellie and Joel not some stupid revenge story. I waited years for this game to come out only for the developers to ruin it all. So sad.

Amazing game, same mechanics as the first olus a few new ones, story is great, environnemental storytelling is amazing and the graphics looks great, I don't get the bad reviews just because they think the plot had to be different.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After waiting 7 years for this sequel, to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. First, the positives. The acting is phenomenal. The graphics are great. Yup.. Oh and you get to pet the dog. The negatives. Listen, the concept of fighting both sides of a revenge story is actually really cool and interesting. But DON’T do it for a sequel to a story that has 2 characters we have loved and been attached to for 7 years and expect us to enjoy playing a character that kills one of the two, and then we as the player have to actively try and kill the other character we love. Like seriously.. did they expect us to have the same attachment to Abby as Joel/Ellie? I expected Joel to die in TLOU2. I think all of us did. It’s incredibly cliche and predictable, which is arguably a flaw in its own right, but what I despised is the way he was murdered. It’s disgustingly violent and slow. And the fact we are supposed to sympathise with Abby after she did such a thing, and murdering him like that in front of his ‘daughter’, completely degraded her story of getting revenge over her dead dad. She refused to see how murdering a ‘father’ in front of his ‘daughter’ is beyond evil, even after she experienced losing a father herself. There’s no sympathy shown, so how are we so sympathise with such a person?

Now, I’m not saying Joel and Ellie are angels, but Ellie’s violent actions in TLOU2 would’ve been avoided if it wasn’t for witnessing Joel’s awful death. Joel’s murdering of the Fireflies in the first game was something I always thought to be purposely made for a sequel, because if he threatened or found another way to not mass murder them then there would be no suspenseful set up for a part II. Regardless, he did murder them, and although it was definitely wrong, there is a bigger picture to it than just that. And so, even though he committed such an act, the majority of players still loved him as a character and treasured him even after all these years. THATS what good character writing is. There are many characters written to be villains but are still likeable because of certain characteristics that make them feel human and understandable, even if you wouldn’t act as they did. When it comes to Abby, I wanted to try and feel sympathy. Where Naughty Dog failed was the way she furthered violence instead of seeking closure. Now, I understand from a writers perspective Joel had to die for there to be a purpose in TLOU2 blah blah blah. But what lost me any sympathy for Abby was HOW she reacted. She could’ve killed him to get her revenge for story reasons BUT she could’ve showed hesitance during the killing, or killed him quick so he wouldn’t suffer, or showed heavy regret and pity for the pain she caused. That would’ve made her more real, more likeable and less of a cold murderer. This game is depressing for the sake of being depressing. It feels as though Naughty Dog wanted to create this game to get praise from critics because of the heavy atmosphere and concept rather than care about the fans who have waited 7 years to see their beloved characters. They’ll continue to retweet positive reviews and ignore fans criticism. I will add the only other ‘good’ thing I liked was sparing Dina (lmao this sounds so pathetic) as I just wanted some sort of happiness left for Ellie. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, this is just mine, and I choose to pretend this game never existed:)

The Last of Us 2 is a BEAUTIFUL game with BRUTAL gameplay (not a game for weak people) that fails to tell a well written and compelling story. Really difficult to like any of the side characters and to side with the characters that the game wants you to side with. The game is not a complete disaster but doesn't even come close to his predecessor.

Oh man...I played this directly after finishing Last Of Us Part I for the first time. And boy was it a jump. Story wise it was still fantastic. The main story hits hard, it's shocking, it's emotional, it's dramatic. But gameplay wise...oh God. What a chore.

    FLASHBACKS

I really wanted this game to end. I hate flashbacks so much and to force the player not to just watch a flashback...but to PLAY THE CHARACTERS IN THE FLASHBACK is a whole new level of my hatred haha. At one point it's like "3 years earlier." You beat that part then it says "1 year earlier" then you beat that part and it says, "3 months earlier." I was like STOP IT! Let me move forward! I think it could've cut out like 17 flashbacks and we would've still understood the points they were trying to make. There is no excuse for this amount of flashbacks.

It doesn't help that many of the flashbacks are such mundane, boring things. Playing guitar, forcing you to play fetch with a dog, forcing you to play a mini-game where you shoot suction cupped arrows at targets...forcing you to walk through an entire museum and look at every exhibit and every display while WALKING (and not letting you sprint). And you cannot skip these things. You have to do them in order to move on to the next level. WHY?!

And if the flashback itself wasn't painful enough to be forced to play through...the game forces you to play as the character as you travel to the place to do the boring thing in each flashback. Going to a museum? Great. You have to HIKE THERE, and SWIM, and travel for miles before reaching it. Just to go inside and do a boring thing. Fun. So. Fun.

It makes you travel everywhere in general. Some of the moments where I almost turned the game off are when characters have to reach a building that's super far away. There's a cinematic where they're like "oh look that building is WAY over there. Let's go." and I expect it to cut to me there. But nope...the cinematic ends and my character is standing miles away. And now here I go...I have to once again hike, climb, and swim my way all the way over there. Because that's so very fun to do...

    SKILL TREE

The skill tree is also strange. You level it up downward. So for instance if the top-most skill is crafting med-kits and the bottom-most skill is "increased health." Then you're forced to purchase every pointless skill in that skill tree just to get to "increased health." Whereas in the last game you can level up whatever skill you wanted, whenever you wanted, which was nice. I found myself just gathering things and pointlessly level up skills just to reach the one I really wanted. Felt very wasteful, as if they knew they were just designing skills to get in the way. As opposed to actually designing helpful ones that would be useful.

    PLAYING AS TWO CHARACTERS

Just like in the first game, you play as another character in this one. I wont say who. But it goes on for so long that you kinda forget why you're playing as this person. You do a whole bundle of side-objectives that don't feel that relevant. And they have their own entire skill tree and level up system so it's a whole other branch of the game that pulls you away from the main story. It feels odd. As if they couldn't decide which storyline to commit to so they tried to just squeeze them both in together.

The game basically doubles down on all the things I hated about it by adding a second character. Only this time it makes you go through many of the exact same areas that you already beat as the first character. Spent a lot of time sneaking around this area before? Sucks...now you gotta do it again as THIS CHARACTER.

    OVERALL

A highly repetitive game that I wished would end many different times. In-between all the filler and fluff though is a solid story screaming for attention. But it's a chore to find, and a chore to stick with.

It looks gorgeous. The scenery and characters look amazing. There is virtually no difference between the cut scenes and the gameplay and you often don't even realise you've entered or left one. The areas feel like they have a history and exist when the characters aren't there and there's lots of cool little details to find if you take the time to look around. The mechanics are an improvement on the previous game and the quicktime events have been reduced to a minimum and are very forgiving which was an issue with the previous one. Overall combat and movement is very smooth and the only small issue I had was that sometimes dodging in combat meant your attacker went off screen which was annoying. There a multiple ways to get through areas from stealth to combat to distractions to just running for it and often you'll end up doing a combination of all of those. Like the first game there were times the encounters dragged a little if you were stealth-ing it but there were scary and terrifying times too and fast moving action. The only "bug" I ever noticed was a hint icon wouldn't go away at one bit until I moved to the next area. I loved the first game and avidly avoided spoilers bar the teaser trailers and was excited to see what the story would hold. It was a tough story to experience and it is totally different from the first game. It's hard to pin down. It's a tale about revenge, loss, grief, consequences and bittersweet memories. It is not a happy story but it does have lighter moments too. It is told via cutscenes and the little character interactions like in the first game. I thought the voice acting, character animation and music was superb. Even listening to enemies will drop little details about whats going on plus there a load of notes and side stories to find. The game play does a good job of making you feel what the characters feel, even when you don't want to. It has an unexpected switch in the middle which caught me by surprise which I wasn't sure about but I went with it and it paid off. I understand why they had to do it that way and I think it was the right choice and for me it really worked. The characters do things I don't want them to but I understand their reasons which I loved about the first game too. The game makes me care about them and I want them to do better and I wanted them to survive this in spite of their actions. The ending was dark but with a glimmer of light and it will stay with me for a long time, much like the first one did. I absolutely loved it even though I felt like it absolutely destroyed me playing it. I want to give it a 10 but the extremely minor issues puts it at a 9 (edit: after much thought, reading that a game doesn't have to be perfect to get a 10 and now on my second play where I'm spotting foreshadowing I missed, I have to go with 10) Expand

The color palettes are livelier in the first game as the characters progress in their journey with a glint of hope. Part 2 is about hate, revenge, depression and post traumatic disorder.

A lot of the gameplay mechanics and presentation is directly inspired by the Metal Gear Series. The dynamic stealth and the brutality are elevated to a degree that no other game has reached, though. It feels like Naughty Dog is one generation in advance of everybody, just like Metal Gear did before them. There are anthological segments in the later part of the game where you explore an apartment tower and the basement of a hospital. All very dark, gloomy, and skin crawling stuff that's going to make your day if you're into horror.

The writers at Naughty Dog do really subversive stuff. I remember playing with Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty telling myself : "It's not Solid Snake, but this game is freaking awesome!" They go even further than what Kojima did back in 2001. Plus, if you've watched Game of Thrones, you're used to a rug being pulled under you! The chain of events, though, is awesome and every beat in the story is justified, consistent and perfectly paced, considering the history and the mental health of the main characters.

Best acting and storytelling in gaming. Just like in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, the are no heroes, just broken people. It's a hard pill to swallow. It makes us realise that we can really connect with characters who do horrible stuff. That aspect triggered a lot of anger in the gaming community. Ironically, the same people who didn't mind Joel's actions at the end of the first part!

Again, it's a story written by adults, for adults. Doesn't mean you will love it. But if you choose to put yourself in a position of acceptance, instead of reluctance, you're in for a treat. The best game ever made (that's debatable).

With the release of the HBO series and the multiplayer game, Part 1 will gain traction and it will push the sales for Part 2 even more. When Part 2 came out, an internal memo was circulating at Microsoft saying that they should try to reach that kind of narrative quality in their games. Naughty Dog also won "Best narrative" and "Best game direction" at the game awards for this game.

Don't pass up this one because of the haters! They're irrelevant! Never cared, never will..
