WOW, everything still looks the same. This game just comes down to character development , story and emotions. I just did not see it in this game, how i saw it on part one. There were parts in this game especially that i felt was unnecessary. And killing off Joel at the beginning just left a sour taste. Best parts were the cut scenes of the past whem they show ellie with joel but it kinda took away from The story. At the end when we let abby go and we return to the farm house it was nice but i feel like it was just too ehh. But the last cut scene with joel was what hit the most and made me give this game anything above a 5. Expand

The game fell so short, it shouldn't have been considered and/or released.

Visuals - Amazing. It's a beautiful game. The landscapes, scenery, characters, infected, etc. look great. the artists did not disappoint.

Story - It was terrible. Joel gets killed at the beginning by Abby. I'm not upset about that as that helped me connect with Ellie again and want revenge!! But as I was well on my way in doing so, the creators felt I might want to know Abby's side of the story. I have to say, I couldn't have cared less about that at all. I wanted to kill her because of what she did. By the time I was returned to playing Ellie, I wanted to break the game. I was disconnected from her. It didn't feel like the game I started playing when I first loaded it. Feelings aside, Abby's story was interesting but it should have been made into an optional DLC rather than an interruption in the game. The LGBTQ pandering didn't help the cause either as it made no logical sense to inject the story with it other than to cater to the "woke" leftist mob (had to get the political stuff off my chest).

Overall, the creators did a terrible job with the story. The break from Ellie and Joel to the forced story of Abby was the wrong choice. I can't think of a worse thing to do than to interrupt the story of the characters everyone bought the game for to play a character no one knows and who I personally didn't like (in the main story). She should have been a DLC storyline.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually the game is stunning. The mechanics are similar to the first game. The game is too long and repetitive. The game becomes a chore due to this. I did not enjoy playing this game. I finished the game for the sake of finishing it. I would never replay this game as I did with the first game. The story is awful. The art of story telling is so important to me as a gamer. The bond between the characters and the consumer/user is broken and flushed down the toilet. I doubt I will purchase another game made by naughty dog ever again. Expand

Expand

Obviously, a lot of effort was put in making this game accessible, inclusive and appealing to a broad audience. But it was at the expense of an engaging storyline and character development.

There were some stand out moments and some intense gameplay, but they were few and far between and nothing better than the first game. Also, it was boring. I found myself looking at my phone during cutscenes, I never did this during the first game because I was engaged with the characters. I did not care about the characters in TLOU2. In fact, I did not like them, even characters from the first game I had grown attached to, I now disliked.

Also, very concerning this game has received so many ‘masterpiece’ reviews when there is obviously a lot of issues that any critic would recognise, let alone professional game reviewers.

I give this game a 5 because of the sheer technical achievement, which cannot be ignored.

Whilst it has a message about identity politics, it has no story, or at least one the makes sense. It just meanders without any over-riding sense of purpose. The structure isn’t clever; in fact, it works against the faux narrative. It’s attempt to make you care about the character of Abbey is so obvious and poorly-executed that you’ll be yelling at the screen. In fact, I’ve spent too much time on this game already. A toxic experience. Expand

The message that violence and vengeance is a circle that will eventually come back around to haunt you is beaten into the gamer relentlessly, so much so that one doesn't feel fulfilled or enlightened by the end of the game but physically and mentally exhausted. The games setup for improving guns and skills is made to encourage replaying the game but the thought of suffering through the monotonous repetitive flashbacks and multiple endings is painful to consider and ultimately left me shelvingn the game for what could be a long while. I think 6/10 is fair. Nice try, e incredible graphics and fluid nature of the hand to hand const are not enough to raise this score. Expand

Level design is great, guns are fantastic represented and the gameplay is just freaking amazing. I'm giving a 6/10 because the history is a total nonsense. First you encounter with a grown Ellie, wich is not the Ellie from the first game because she lost any piece from her amazing personality, then Joel died at the first 2 hours, not giving you any explication. All Ellie's history was right, then Abby history, I will say it clear, no one gives a **** and the final is the top of the nonsense. If you don't care about the history you will love it. First of all he combat I did actually enjoy quite a bit, it felt hard hitting and visceral which is super satisfying, each arrow shot looked like it really impacted each and every enemy, the mechanics with dodging and attacking I haven't seen elsewhere, so great work in that respect.

The graphics and environments are stunning as expected from Naughty Dog, the detail is crazy with every corner and crevice filled with overgrown plants and details and truly makes you feel as if you are in a post apocalyptic world. Truly pushes the PS4 to its limits whilst keeping a stable experience.

Unfortunately now we have to move onto the story, which I didn't think I would have to say about a The Last of Us title, but its not very good, pretty bad in fact, and that is it separated from the spectacle of the first game. It feels really messy with a constant, jarring shift in perspective between characters, some who Naughty Dog really want you to care about, so much so that whole sections, or even the whole of the story will just seem terrible if you don't care enough about them. In comparison, The Last of Us gave us Ellie and Joel to relate with and even if you somehow didn't like the characters you still understood that there is a mission to be done to help the human race. Here there isn't any of that and completely relies on you caring hard for those characters with no story backbone but that. I can see what Naughty Dog attempted with this style of story telling but unfortunately it didn't succeed and I really had to force myself through the latter part of the game...

There's alot more I could say about the story but that would start getting into spoiler territory and that's isnt what this is for. So overall I would say 6.5/10 but due to the rating system here I feel as if I would be stretching too hard to give this game a 7/10 so for me, here it takes a 6.

    Pros:
    > Satisfying combat with visceral fighting.
    > Gorgeous environments and amazing graphics.

    Cons:
    > Storyline was ambitious but didnt meet the bar to keep me hooked.
    > Emotional attachment to the characters were relied on too heavily for the story, and I didn't feel
emotionally invested in them for the story to hit its beats.

I saw the critic reviews and am honestly shocked, it feels more and more difficult to trust them these days. I can totally understand if someone happened to enjoy this game, but seeing an insane amount of reviews saying 9/10 or 10/10 is kind of shocking that these are the people who rate these games. Always read user reviews before purchasing a game! We aren't paid off like many critics actually are, we are just real gamers like yourself who are emotionally invested in purchasing a game.

I hope Naughty Dog learn from this and improve for their next adventure.

    - Sam

note: I would only recommend buying this game once it is on offer for around $30 max. If you are looking for a different PS4 game to play now before the PS4's life cycle is over I highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima, masterpiece of this generation.

The most interesting and well rounded character... I really didn’t want to play the game after Joel’s death. It sucked me out of the game quick. Then just the repetitive gameplay afterwards and the tiresome story between Ellie and Dina that I did not care one bit about. And the biggest negative was Abby! Why would anyone want to play 10+ hours as her. I rushed through that part because I did not care for her at all. I hated her and hated playing as her. I felt no sympathy whatsoever. And not being able to kill her at the end made this game even worse. The only positives were that the graphics were phenomenal and the stealth gameplay was fun for awhile but that doesn’t make up for a terrible story in a story based game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is truly beautiful in terms of its graphics. The environment, character models, weapons and the cut scenes are really a tribute to the designers. Your eyes will feast on the incredible aesthetic of this game. Along with its visual beauty, the soundtrack put behind every moment is remarkable. The deafening screams of your most recently shot enemy or the gentle and calm plucks on Ellie’s guitar will satisfy your desire to be immerse in this post-apocalyptic world. At times, especially during the most violent scenes the sound track is frighteningly realistic. Gun shots, screams, blood dripping and much more to leave you uneasy in your seat whilst playing. The gameplay itself has some clunky moments, switching weapons in the heat of a fire fight was sometimes awkward and usually resulted in getting shot in the head or ripped apart by a Clicker. Although clunky sometimes, for the most part the firefights and deadly battles with infected were high energy and full of adrenaline but naturally fluid. There were so many times I was on the edge of my seat desperate to get through a bloody encounter with Ellie’s foes. The weapons are fantastic and you use different weapons depending on whether you are playing as Ellie or Abby which is a nice difference to the gameplay but I’m a little disappointed that in my opinion Abby got nearly all the best weapons. This game gives you shotguns, Molotov cocktails, Pipe bomb, Revolvers, Rifles, Bows and crossbows and even more to help you survive the horror of the Last of Us Part II. Dark hallways, fungus-infested rooms and desolate buildings make for a terrifying adventure through Seattle. As well as the high energy moments there were times of tension, anxiety and true fear as you try to navigate on to your next objective. This game is certainly not for the faint of heart. However, as much as the game has its positives it also has some big negatives. For many of us the Last of Us was a masterful story. It made us laugh, cry and cry some more and maybe even just smile a little at the wholesome moments. This is what people waited 7 years to see the sequel to. It fair to say the story took a rather harsh turn for me. The first half of the story is mostly good and at the 2 hour mark we see Joel butchered by Abby and that drives a hatred for her immediately. This move really twists up the story as you are forced to play as her later on. Abby is supposed to be the one we hate but we are lead down a road that basically end with “Good and Evil is subjective”. This I find to be an interesting take but it in turn destroys a major part of Ellie’s character in the process especially towards the latter part of the game when Ellie leaves her baby and girlfriend Dina to go and find Abby. The characters should drive the plot but here it seems the plot is driving the characters.
We are introduced to new characters which is great if they actually had serious depth. The new characters in the story have very little backstory and I was waiting and waiting for the character to shine through! Unfortunately, the parts when they actually do they are killed before we can learn much more about them. Abby is also a main area I find to be that let’s the story down. Firstly, she is incredibly muscular and especially by most people’s standards. This seems rather silly in the context of the game where survival is paramount, food, water, ammo and fighting for your life should be your top priority. Making muscle gains is very much a 1st World passion and interest that requires a strict diet regime, regular exercise and plenty of time to recover from your workout. Not such luxury would probably exist in a world full of constant danger. Not only that but there are very few women that are capable of even reaching that muscle size in the world right now and all in all it seems implausible
Owen is a new character that is introduced to us as a friend of Abby. I might even enjoy Owen as a character if I didn’t immediately feel disgusted by the fact he actively cheats on his pregnant girlfriend Mel. Mel is a character fighting for the WLF and is a friend of Abby and for some reason everyone is okay with a pregnant woman to go on dangerous missions in a combat zone. Why?! The WLF is mentioned to have thousands of members and seemingly none of them would make a safer and more suitable candidate? Another example of a situation that is ridiculous given the context. Rounding up, the Last of Us Part II can be described as a “Beautiful, Messy Fun”. This game has serious issues around the plot which leave you very confused but the game is fundamentally enjoyable to play. I wouldn’t recommend buying it if the story is the only reason you want to play. I hope to see Naughty Dog expand on the story and tie up the loose ends of the story as it left me dieing to see it resolved.

But there is no way you can call art this superficial kind of story. Killing Joel just to create a plot is so „artistic“ and „inspiring“ as lunching Crash Bandicoot. Naughty Dog(or we can say Neil Druckman) is too proud to tell a story well. A good story is not rare. But how to tell it well,it's the key point. 7 years ago, Naughty Dog give us a perfect answer. But now, they lost the talent.

This game should not have existed, its story is not necessary and you'll hate it, and the gameplay does not evolve or bring anything new to the table. The graphics and sound are incredible, but after 7 years can we ask for less? If you enjoyed the first game for its characters, story, pacing and world building, then skip this one and any other that comes after it.

Surprised by the controversy. The game didn’t come off as preachy or interested in pushing an agenda. Everything that happens in the game feels like the natural course of events for these characters. This is a masterpiece that rivals the first one. The scope, scale and overall execution is flawless.

It's not necessarily what actually happens in the story, it's HOW it happens, and how many things they had to do to the characters and plot to make what they wanted to happen actually make sense. If the same story had been structured in a much different way I think this game could reach the 9 and 10 that Naughty dog usually deserves, but unfortunately when you betray the characters we love by them acting in ways that go against who they are...you leave the door open for a story that cannot connect in the way it was envisioned for the audience. I came away wanting to love this and I truly enjoyed the game, but I was just so disappointed in the narrative. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game-play was average. The plot was terrible. More meaning and depth could have been given to Joel death. They were too quick to push the players to be emphatic with Abby. It is clear that the gaming company chose to pander to the religion of wokeness over writing a good story but looking at the reviews of critics it seems to have paid them off. No critic dare write an unfavourable review for this game fearing that they would be eaten alive and cancelled by the acolytes of the woke religion. Expand

The thing people wanted to play this game for, the story, is an incredible let down. It suffers from what most things suffer from these days: subversion of expectations. There are a million ways this story could've been told I'm an amazing way. Instead, they take the route of Game of Thrones, Star Wars, etc. And subvert audience expectations and ruin what should've been a classic franchise. I feel this game pushing me so hard to feel the good-woman Abby, Incontast Ellie like the bad girl.
The whole story made Ellie a lot looser as the PTSD trilogy lost everything, lost fingers, disabled, lost ability to play guitar. Losing lovers and families (Dina and JJ)
This is the main character that fans love. she would get anything better than these ending.
Personally, if finishing like this I'd rather end it at the farm. Joel would prefer Ellie to live happily. Not losing everything like this
The ending background in Menu bar is a hopeful for Abby and Lev. The director was biased. Hopeful for Abby but the despond for Ellie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OH LORD, OH LORD!!! Where should I start. After the incredible and outstanding performance of The Last of Us, I really tried with my full hearth to love or just even like this Game. But NO!!!
I have to take a Point!
Yes, Im a Fanboy of TLOU, but I can't nor will I ever except this piece of Crap.

But firstly let me go on to the ''GOOD'' Points of the Game:
    - Exceptional Graphics
    - Nice Combat System
    - Beautiful designed Landscapes and Areas
    - Nicely Exhibit Bossfights

And now to the ''BAD'' Points:
    - Utterly **** Story
    - Trash Story telling
    - Bad Charakter Development
    - Unexplained death of Joel; well not unexplained but with no **** Connection to the Game
    - No new type of Zombies
    - ''Jumpscares'', which aren't even scary just annoying
    - And... And... And...

Well to shorten this up. The Good points are only the Graphics and the Beautiful Game design.
Everything else ist just Bad. You feel how this Game is a Product of Bad Storywriting and no Love for TLOU nor for the Fans. The Start feels very refreshing. You see known Faces and some Story input. Learn the Basics and so on. Even after you played Abby and switch back to Ellie, it is all Good.
Then it happens, Joel died, I was heartbroken, didn't play for 3 Days. But then I thought, if you get so heartbroken about a character, they did something good. They aren't idiots which would kill the ''MAIN'' character just to have a sequel, but MAN I was wrong. The Story pretty much started crumbling. It was just hatred and dark. No fun just going through, till I see a nice Landscape and enjoy the view a bit. After couple of hours I slightly started enjoying the GAMEDESIGN. And I only played it like a Game form the Genre: Zombie etc. . Here and there I got hocked by the story but nothing much.

Then it happened, we have to play ABBY for 10 skin Hours. WTF!!!
I was fuming but, thought about it and said, who know, maybe you see something you can relate about and aren't that pissed about here that she killed Joel.
But no, every hour that passed I hated it. After 2 Hours, I started not to Loot, not to stealth and not to kill anyone. I just rushed through every Game''level'' and wanted an end. This Part I had to play in 5 Days. It felt like I was working or something, no fun, no nothing. It felt dry, with no love. Like the Producer threw in a Part written by some Frats, which partied 3 Weeks with no Brain or interest for TLOU.

The End and where Abby looses everything, has no Context. It is just there.
Tommy evolved into an **** at the End... I don't even want to write about it anymore.

Im Happy that the Game End, I want my money back. EVERY SINGLE CENT. I want back the 77 years I waited for TLOU 2. I want back my hopes and Ideas I had for this Game. I want back every thing. I want to forget this miserably Game. Please delete it. Or bring out a Part 3, where you show that Ellie wakes up from a Dream and TLOU 2, was the BAD BAD Dream. And then you give us the real Story what happened. Im not even pissed that Joel died. It is just how and why he died.

    WORST GAME EVER!!!!
    DONT BUY IT!!!!
PLAY MARIO KART, HAS A BETTER STORYLINE!!!!
DONT GIVE MONEY TO PEOPLE THAT DONT APPRECIATE THEIR FANS

Part 2, instead of analyzing how it would have changed the relationship between Joel and Ellie, turns into a revenge plot, that is both miserably dreary, and boring.
The problem is not the LGBTQ++ representation, in fact Ellie and Dina's relationship is the best part of the game. The problem is that this game could have been much more, its message could have been told in a much more creative way.

First off this game is absolutely gorgeous and the gameplay is awesome but when it comes down to what the human spirit longs for that this game painfully lacks, is HOPE. I don’t recognize the characters I once loved from the original masterpiece. Being forced to try and kill one of the main characters that I dearly loved after seeing the other one murdered left me feeling depressed. At the end of this game you are left feeling dark and hopeless, stripped of any joy and love left. The human spirit needs hope especially in a time where the world feels dark and uncertain. I say this with respect to the naughty dog team and appreciate my opinion being heard. I hope we get a better game from this amazing team next time around! Expand

I don't know about you but this is a superb game. Loved the story and how it ended. Made me care about side characters and all.

The story is a mess, constantly flipping from present to past and most of the time feels like this shouldve been part 3. Joel is killed 2 hours into the game in an out of character moment setting the games plot into motion. Ellie now spends the game trying to find his killer and get revenge. The Last of Us 2 in many of its subverting expectation moments then has you play as Joels killer, Abby to lead up to the confrontation with Ellie. The two fight and Abby leaves them live after finding out Dina is pregnant. Ellie then decides to go after Abby again after Tommy guilt trips her and in the end lets Abby go. The game ends with Ellie letting Joel go and forgiving him. For me the main problem is Ellie has lost so much to Abby and in the end people died for nothing because the writers wanted to show how bad revenge is. An interesting idea but just poorly executed. Ellie is ready to kill Abby but after remembering forgiving Joel decides against it. I find it stupid and anti climatic that she would do this after what she put herself and her friends through. The writers clearly had a love for Abby and that bias showed throughout the game. She had all of the best moments gameplay wise and storywise got more interesting material. The one part of the story I really liked was the Lev/Yara and the Scars storyline. It was an interesting insight into another faction of the world and had some of the best moments gameplay wise. Riding on a horse from a burning settlement was one highlight. On the topic of gameplay this is the one place where the last of us 2 excells. It refines everything I loved from the first game and adds a couple of new mechanics like the prone ability. The environments are breathtaking and the collectibles really help build the world. There was nothing more satisfying than sneaking your way through a group of enemies silently picking them off one by one. The few boss fights the game offered were good but could be improved in future games but overall the gameplay was worth the price of admission alone. It is lacking the one thing that made the first so great, interesting characters and the characters from the first are either ruined or end up doing some stupid out of character moment to suffice the plot. The new characters are either boring or mildly interesting but overall are not up to the quality of this series. The game overall is not terrible but for a developer like Naughty Dog and a series like The Last of Us it is very dissapointing. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
