I also really liked the narrative and the story it told, but I think the fact that you play two characters in big chunks affected the pace of the game a little. The only change I would have liked is if you played the two storys in parallel, like in the first hour. I understand that some story bits will upset some fans, but I feel that it fits in the world ND created and are appropriate for the story it tells. The first LoU is one of my top 3 games all time, and, althout this one is not a 10 in my opinion like its predecessor, it's still delivers a very strong and powerful sequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game in all its aspects - responsive and very fluid gameplay evolved from the first game, fresh story that's not only about survival or violence or revenge but also a tale of love, the path to extreme darkness and back to the light. It's about perspective on things - even the most righteous things that matter to you can be the very definition of `wrong` to another person. This game has torn me inside out - creative and unexpected writing just gets you emotional.

Graphics are top-notch, nothing even compares to this by the level of detail, lighting, animation today. TLOU2 gives you one of the best NaughtyDog's set-pieces ever- skywalk episode, seraphites' island escape, Ratking fight at the hospital (so scary), and many more.

Nuanced score by Gustavo Santaolalla, emotional covers of Pearl Jam and a-ha songs by Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker create the perfect atmosphere. Not to mention their Oscar-worthy performances - all their mutual scenes and chemistry gives me chills every time I watch them.

Naughty Dog totally topped all previous games with TLOU2. Best PS exclusive of this generation, the game of the year 2020 so far.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Story is actually really good, except for some pacing issues. I first disliked Abby, but I came to like her over the course of the game. Most people who criticize the game dislike how Joel died, because they think he is the hero of the first game, but those people never understood the first game. Joel isn’t supposed to be a beloved hero, he is at best morally gray and at worst a sympathetic villain who doomed humanity out of him being selfish. Obviously nobody’s right in the game, but if I had to choose I would say it’s Abby, because Joel needlessly murdered her father, who wasn’t really a threat to him, because Joel could have just knocked him out. That’s not to say I hat Joel, but people who think that they destroyed characters from the first game and that Joel is a hero, don’t even understand the story or characters from the first game. Besides people who think Elli should have killed Abby, probably also think that Luke should have killed Vader in "Return if the Jedi" ! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished the game and I have to say I am disappointed. From a gameplay standpoint the graphics are beautiful and some of the best out there, the gameplay is smooth and everything ran well, Seattle is dangerous but beautiful metropolis that is fun to explore but the story falls short. If you play the game or saw the leaks a couple of months ago you know that Joel dies and I think that moment is were the game starts slowly falling. I called The Last Of Us part I one of my greats and a lot of that was down to the relationship between Joel and Ellie, however this game tears that relationship down and makes Elle hate Joal. This makes sense as the ending of part one saw Joel betray Elle's trust however with Joel's death the game can barely explore this, only through flashbacks do we get to see any development between the two. I have to say the flashbacks are the best moments of the game for me, they feel natural, and it feels like the progression we would have got from part 1. However for most of the game everything else feels convoluted. Multiple new characters are introduced however they never get any time to develop and therefore you can't care when anything bad happens to them. We actually get a chance to play as the villain for a very long time in the game and I think this part of the game is actually ok and explorers the character well, however as this is the woman that killed Joel so we can't connect, this big portion of the game feels empty and I think it was a mistake for the developers to expect player's to take kindly to playing as probably the most hated person in gaming at the moment. Is the game as bad as many of the fan reviews say, no, but as a sequel it betrays everything the first one did. I think the anger from the fans comes from a point of betrayal, as all the progress of the first game was thrown away and basically amounted to nothing. The flashbacks in the game prove that Naughty Dog could have made a great sequel that stays true to the characters, the ingredients were certainly there but shamefully were not capitalised on, Joel and us deserved better. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's sad to see all the negative review's, I don't know if it's because of lesbians on a revenge or that gamers have been looking at the spoilers from a hacker, I've ignored all that news so I can play it all on my own, and now that it's out for a week I can say this indeed, the brutality, the tense moments, the story, and the characters (rather they've died or are still alive). The entire game is a beautiful sequel non the less, having played both of the games including the dlc from the 1st game I can get why some of the fans are mad. but, that all said and done this is in my part the most gorgeous, tense, and brutal game I've ever played in my live, the gameplay and controls is directly noticeable from the start with a couple of xtra new tricks like dodgin and counter attack, new and dangerous enemies that amplified the scare score quite a bit, some characters you hate at the beginning and probably still do at the end, but the look and sights of the world and everything around it is beautiful to look at, the combat is slick and the movement sometimes a bit stiff but overall perfect to play, I admit that sometimes I got a bug or a glitch, but I don't mind It cause it was at a moment when you were either dead or you were walking around and some of the enemies were buggin a bit, overall I highly recommend this game to those who want to play it on the ps4 (pro) Expand

Some homophobic / transphobic etc and some who didn’t like that it didn’t have a happy ending where Joel survived. The raw emotion I felt, how uncomfortable I felt for some of the intense fight scenes (namely - Abby / Ellie at the very end ) was incredibly moving. For me it’s just another reason why game journalists opinions mean nothing. To actually suggest to me that this game is way better than Horizon Zero Dawn is an absolute joke gimme a break. Anyways tlou2 i really really wanted to love you. I tried very hard but there are quite a few issues I had with you. First and foremost the story, the characters in the tlou were very well written and and very easy to form an emotional attachment to, part 2 however the characters we forgettable. The writing felt lazy and forced at times and the pacing was way off. As far as gameplay goes I was disappointed as well. I expected an upgrade from tlou but very little changes here. Would like to have seen more new enemies instead of just variants of the old ones. It felt like every battle plays out the exact same and yeah the jump button what a joke lol. The inclusion of dogs to sniff you out would of been great if not for the absolute brain dead AI and also again easily manipulated and abused here. You can run up grab someone and silent kill them and a guy won’t see you if he’s staring at you as long as you are far enough away. Play on higher difficulties to mitigate this a bit. Now does that mean this game does nothing right? Nope....the graphics are some of the best on the ps4 and this game is visually stunning. Also the audio work is fantastic and voice acting as well. There are moments in this game that do get you scared or nervous and or on the edge of your seat. For me though these moments are too few and by the end I felt like I was forcing myself to finish this game to wrap up the story I didn’t like. Overall though the game is not a zero and it’s not a 10 it lands somewhere in the middle hence why I gave it a 5 could be argued for a 4 for some or even as high as a 6 maybe 7 and I’d listen to those arguments but don’t try and tell me this is the best game of this generation or the worst either. Like I said earlier about horizon zero dawn...don’t even try to tell me this game is close to the Witcher 3 game journos. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That's just my opinion. I think either this or cyberpunk 2077 will be the game of the year. It's 100%. The game's graphics are amazing (especially in the rain). I'd rather tell you in advance but I read a lot of walkthroughs and articles about the game. He became inhuman, true to his predecessor, the atmosphere was barely dark. It’s not a zombies game like dead rising (so we fight it out with a chainsaw) but here too you can do the task out loud. Since I don’t have a ps4 so I asked my friend to share his opinion. I also understood one of it ... The story didn't become a big release. However, the way the 2-thread (Elie and Abby's thread meet once) is something brilliant. Just like the gameplay itself. The graphics say it again but something inhuman. Luckily, I avoided the spoilers so every single moment came unexpectedly. Many people say to rewrite the end of the game (or get a DLC like the Left Behind did). The object of the game is to say even the genius. We get Abby and Elie. They both lost a lot. We get the cause and effect of the revenge campaign for both characters. While Abby realizes sooner that this makes no sense, Elie eventually realizes that she has already lost everyone and everything. So it all made no sense. While Elie was completely ruined, Abby found a goal for herself. And his goal is to protect Lew (sorry but I don’t know how to describe it well). I think Elie pardoned Abby because she realized that she wouldn't have a better spiritual world, that Joel could never come back again and that night when Elie didn't forgive Joel but she wanted to start again ... In this world there is neither good nor bad. Everyone acts, throws the threads. Elie eventually gets out of the vicious circle. This game is a perfect ending to this generation. You have to play this game, you have to immerse yourself in the story. I may never try this game but we will remember this game for 100% of the time for a very long time. Thanks to Nauthy Dog for making this masterpiece. Expand

Tried very hard to think of a reason to not give this game a perfect score but I honestly can't think of a negative reason.

After replaying the first game only days before playing part two the jump in quality was incredible. Every aspect of the game is a major improvement over the first. The gameplay is much more fun now the ability to go full on prone has made such a big difference especially for those that like to go as stealth as possible. Shoot-outs are the best and most action packed I have experienced in a third person game some of them are so good they look choreographed.

Graphics and sound top-notch not getting any better from this generation of consoles. Let them do all the talking for themselves.

Naughty Dog have gone above and beyond with the details in this game. They have added things that are not necessarily needed but the fact they put the effort into adding them just you have got to give them massive respect for that. The little guitar simulator thing they do with Ellie is such a cool touch to the game. Check out covers people are making on YouTube using it, amazing.

The story has divided many people but I personally thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. I would say it takes a lot for me to get invested in a story whether is being TV or films. But the way this story is told by naughty dog really gripped me and I binged through the game over five days with an ending playtime of 35hours. I normally begrudge paying £55 for any video game but for 35hours plus all the effort and hard work that they must have put into this game I feel that is money well spent.

I'm probably going to end up playing it again and maybe make it my first PS4 platinum trophy.

I went into this game without seeing any reviews and after playing it and seeing the low reviews scores I'm wondering have I missed something. Maybe I'm just too dumb to see how crap this game.

But this is the best game I've played this gen or probably ever. I'm hoping for some story DLC or even a PS5 version even if that means paying again.

So, here's the deal. This game is great. It's emotional, it's brutal, it's challenging, and it's incredibly detailed. Guess what, it's 2020 and the game features LGBTQ+ characters? Who would have thought it...anyone that takes offence to this is very narrow minded and doesn't deserve to comment on the game, but that's just my opinion. It shouldn't be up for discussion and I commend Naughty Dog's dedication to include this in such a high profile game. The end.
The story is lengthy and incredibly well thought out. There is another obvious 'controversial' moment of shock near the beginning - Joel's death. Yep, I definitely came across this when these details were leaked and I was devastated, but I didn't read any more into it, so I didn't know the specific details. Playing it for the first time was tough to watch and incredibly emotional. I thought the way in which it was shown was powerful and struck the right balance of violence and emotion, especially seeing it through Ellie's eyes.
This definitely had to happen in order to push the game in a new direction, otherwise it would have just been a retread of the first. I didn't necessarily want to play as Joel again with Ellie by my side - we've been there.
There's a point in the game where you begin to play as new character Abbey. Rather than it being a short segment, you very quickly realise this is gonna be half the game. I didn't connect at first because I struggled to empathise with a character who had just killed Joel. However, as the gameplay went on, I understood what was being done, and what we got was a very padded and relatable character. She isn't massively different from Ellie, it just took time to understand her motives. I think from the point I realised her dad was killed by Joel, I understood why we needed this version of events. This part of the gameplay was needed to steer the game from being a one sided revenge story.
Everything else about the game is fab - the combat is hugely satisfying and I definitely feel like there's more of an option in how to handle a particular encounter. I generally went in all guns blazing, but I like the emphasis on being able to completely sneak past and avoid combat.
The encounters with the infected were terrifying. My first time with the stalkers genuinely scared me. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to push forward without screaming out loud. There's also a new member of the infected family which was a surprise. It was tense and exciting and it came at a good point in the game. The visuals are fab. The ability to go off and explore at certain points allows the player to witness scenes and moments that could otherwise be completely missed.
I just loved the game. There are definitely weak points - as much as I love Naughty Dog's approach, I do sometimes find the slower paced elements a little dull. I get that they help us build more human connections with the characters, but sometimes the pacing can be off. Apart from this, they've done it again. The only reason I wanted to post a review was because of all the negative ones I've seen. I don't understand, it baffles me. I realise many are attached to these characters and accepting a new approach is difficult, but I really believe this had to happen to allow part 2 to stand on its own feet. And as I mentioned, the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters is so important in this day and age, and it should just be as "normal" as any heterosexual characters. THERE SHOULD NOT BE A DISCUSSION ON THIS. DO NOT form your opinion based off of these negative reviews. Play the game with an open mind and you will not be disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great characters and story. Characters develop in an interesting way. Even Joel, who we see in flashbacks. Ppl complain that he said his name to Abby. But he is more relaxed now, living in Jackson for 4 years and having a 2nd chance to be a father. Glad he is not the exact same grieving, hurt and distrustful character he was in the first game. Abby changes a lot during the story, eventually trying to redeem herself (including for killing Joel), turning her back on the WLF to help the runaway scars. Ellie's character changes too, as we see her descend into darkness. The ending is amazing. Ppl complain that you had to kill all sorts of people just to get to the end and you don't kill Abby. Well, all those others were hunting you down, were part of a vicious military group or part of a cruel cult. They knew the risks. In fact, that is what makes the ending so powerful, that Ellie is finally able to let it go. Those same ppl complain there is no character development. What greater character development can there be than to have Ellie forgive Abby? This game is about forgiveness as much as it is revenge. Every scene in the game casts a mood over the player. Every action scene is like a really fun puzzle, at least on survivor mode. So re-playable. My fav game ever. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a story-driven game this is the equivalent to a bad fan fiction written overnight or B-side horror flick only seven years in the making, backed by triple A money and made by the supposed cream of the crop in the creative industry today. A hack and slash blood-fest tale of a girl gutted of all that made her adored and cherished in this game's predecessor, bent on cold hard (*cough* dull) vengeance at the cost of hundreds of human lives. (Because Joel's death mattered, who cares if hundreds of people have to die, their lives were nothing compared to Joel's!) A grim, emotionless Ellie who by the end is trumped in likeability and redeemable qualities by the very villain she's trying to kill. A villain who goes through the cycle of revenge *for* Ellie to learn from, who consistently rises above the themes of revenge that Ellie can't and becomes a better person for it (letting Ellie and her friends live twice over) and reclaiming some form of a life.

Okay, story told, lesson learned right? Ellie and Dina living their dream happily ever after. Alas, the character assassination continues. Ellie can't sleep, can't eat... consumed by Joel's death. There's only one thing for it... Abbie must die! That's when I knew that this bad game was sinking even lower. Character development, story arc? Forget about it, Cue inevitable showdown, finally a resolution! Ellie will kill Abbie, and suffer all the ramifications this brings. Well, nope. She'll just kill a few more humans, stab Abbie a few times and almost drown her to realise what it took Abbie seconds to realise. We are robbed of the satisfaction of her doing the mistake she set out to do the entire game, in favour of this light bulb moment we already got hours before from Abbie. She goes back to an empty house. Revenge is bad.

You know what else is bad? This game. I don't care how gorgeous your graphics are. Don't force me to kill hundreds of people and a dog in the name of revenge and then have the audacity to tell me that I can't have my revenge because revenge is bad and I'm a bad person for wanting it, bad bad and shame on me!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us shook me to my core. I set out angry and in pain for Ellie. Joel was brutally murdered and we needed justice. I buckled in because Ellie and I had a long road ahead of us. When game started coming to a head I was disappointed. Was this really the end? Was Ellie destined to set of for Jackson? Were we unable to obtain justice for Joel’s death? Was all of the violence she caused and pain she went through for naught? Naughty Dog said sike, this is just the beginning. I wanted nothing to do with it. Abby is the villain! She was evil, why did I have to play as her? I would force her to look over heights just to get a giggle (I’m afraid of heights myself so I started to feel bad). That hatred turned into compassion, and then understanding. Naughty Dog had me shouting a character’s name joyfully, angrily, and calling it out in pained sadness. By Santa Barbara I was hoping the two women who had lost everything because of vengeance could find common ground and end the cycle of pain. I myself was emotionally exhausted. On the beach I was pleading, crying, screaming for Ellie to stop. Every press of square took something from me. As the rest of the cinematics played out I reflected on their stories. I reflected on myself. This game challenges you, forces you to take part and push through. It makes you question yourself and your motives. Every single person that starts this game needs to finish it. You go from an active participant to an unwilling accomplice, at least I did. The Last Of Us 2 just revolutionized the game industry. I didn’t even begin to touch on all of the wonderful details, nuances, and incorporations in this game. It changed me, and quickly became my favorite game. I’m excited to see what they do next because TLOU is more than a game, it is art. Expand

It's such a shame so many are criticizing this in such bad bad faith. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T "AGREE" WITH STORY CHOICES DOES NOT MAKE BAD WRITING. It's so clear since the release that the leaks (and the month afterwards) festered fans groupthink and confirmation bias into bombing a labor of love for thousands of people. I love everything about this game, gameplay, graphic, characters and also how ballsy they can be On the down note I only feel there’s unnecessary story which is after Ellie has settled down in the farm that should’ve been the ending, the part where she went to California was pretty forceful and instead losing everything in that journey, she lost family, she didn’t have the revenge she wanted to instead saving Abby, she lost the ability of playing guitar that always remind her of Joel, if story was left in her in the farm and make a peace that’s would be a greater ending than it is Expand

Incredible visuals and disturbing sights, but also filled with the little feelgood moments that make it all tolerable. The problem is definitely the pacing. Particularly the Abby part, everything is always as dragged out as it can be. With a few good action scenes throughout. The car chase and the Rat King where very fun! But i did not remotely care about Abby and wanted it to end. The gameplay gets really repetitive after the 15 hours. And then your only halfway... The game is good. I want to start off by talking about the core of TLOU and what my biggest issue was with this game, the narrative. Now I didn’t hate the story in this game, I still really liked it but it’s not what I expected or wanted. I wanted a continuation of Joel and Ellie’s story, I wanted more from those two and that was it. Instead we are delved into a much more ambitious dual character story, and one that isn’t as wholesome, even for the apocalyptic hell this game takes place in. This story is one of revenge, that’s how I’ll leave it to avoid spoilers. Some of the choices made by the writers definitely weren’t traditional and there were parts where I wish they were. They also, I feel, let a character die in a less than fitting way, forgetting what what this character knows and has been through. However, that characters death sets the narrative into place and I won’t lie made me the most emotional I’ve ever been from a video game. Ellie of course is at the helm of this story, along with a new character by the name of Abby. Many new characters are introduced in this game and I definitely grew to love a few, Jessie, Manny, Lev and even Abby. Ellie’s girlfriend in this game, Dina, is one that I didn’t quite enjoy. Their chemistry wasn’t nearly as good or authentic as Ellie and Riley from the first games DLC. Even though I may not have liked all the characters I have to say how well performed every single character is by some of the most talented voice actors in the world, especially Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. Now gameplay in this game is very similar to the first game just with more mechanics and a completely realistic overhaul to nearly every action in the game. Combat is brutal and realistic, traversal and exploration has been turned up, shooting feels heavy and every scenario can be handled in what feels like dozens of ways. More in the comments- Expand

I’m really disappointed in this game. The characters in the first game were so good but in this game they **** up. that’s not the only thing that’s been made wrong but I won’t go into detail just play the game and if you have a brain you’ll know

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game was great the first 12-13 hours, I didn't mind Joel being killed. Playing as Ellie was something I fricking LOVED and I hoped the leaks about playing the half of the game as Abby weren't true. Turns out, you DO actually play the half of the game as Abby, and that really ruined the experience for me Expand

Decepción de la historia y mal por querer hacer, lo políticamente correcto en mundo apocalíptico ,y Abby el peor personaje no empatize en nada a pesar de que el juego me obliga ,una historia mal contada.

Amazing game, people need to learn the difference between bad story telling and not getting the story you wanted

They dont care about the fanbase or the game. Just selling you an agenda with a crappy story. Complete waste of my money. Refund instantly

I don't understand any negative review. The game has amazing story. The only problem is dumb intelligence of NPC.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
