This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really hated this game when I first went through the whole thing. What bothered me the most was the ending, not only does Ellie not kill Abby but just lets her go.. but it was the fact that Ellie was literally left with nothing. Dina is gone who knows where, Joel is dead (and the way they killed him was TRASH), AND WHAT HIT ME GARD WAS THE FACT THAT ELLIE CANT EVEN PLAY THE GUITAR ANYMORE REALLY..SO SAD And of course I wish The writing went a different way I hated the writing at first but now watching the interview with Ashley explaining their technically wasn’t really a true villain in this game and you’re really all of them in the interview explaining the point of you and how to take away the plight really made me look at it different in put a higher score of this game because it made me not think about it too emotionally. but what I said in my original rating still stands specifically about wanting the part three PLEASE DO A PART lll Expand

The player is given all of the tools needed to express empathy, but it is ultimately their choice whether they choose to do so or not, which is respectful to the their ability of thought. The people we don’t know is much more humanized compared to the first game, and each important character is meticulously written to have multiple layers to their character. Many events may initially seem overall pointless to the story, but if the player keeps an open mind and analyzes how these points are executed, these same events seem to serve much larger roles to the overall plot. The gameplay is incredibly fluent, whether it be stealth or full gunfights. Your freedom to be aggressive, passive, or anywhere in between is encouraged, and your chosen playstyle will likely be an option. Absolutely stunning game Expand

Many negative reviews are from people who have not finished the game. Second, some negative reviews do have valid points when it comes to gameplay. For example, playing as Abby for ten hours felt tedious at times. The writers were a little heavy-handed attempting to make the audience sympathize with her. Ellie. But there are some very good fights while playing as Abby. The gameplay itself is fluid, very accessible, and some of the best naughty dog has made. The story is not as good as the first, but it has plenty of high points. Many people seem incapable of analyzing this story with any sort of depth, they just scream about how it did not align with their expectations. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is fantastic, and the story is still much better than most video games out there. The game is 100% worth playing, it may not be as strong of a narrative as the first one, but it is powerful in its own way. Solid 8. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

More refined combat from original TLOU with best visuals I've ever seen. Story is quite a mixed bag and definitely could've been improved with some small changes to events and the pacing, but overall I do not get the hate for this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly i got into the game thinking it's complete garbage and what i saw was astounding. I was actually amazed by the detail of the game. When i actually went deeper to see why the game is hated, like 50% of them are because Eliie is gay? Seriously? Like are humans that abysmally pathetic now? Our race is homophobic against a video game character? 2nd thing was false marketing, which i have to agree on, was pretty bad on their part. But false marketing doesn't make the game bad, it makes the developers bad. I noticed that half the people didn't even play the game, like literally, some comments were "the controls are hard", "the story is monotone", "the characters are dumb" and then the same people go on saying how Doom Eternal was the most original game ever (no offense, like the game, but that's just false). All and all Joel's death was explained and it has a legitimate reason, he isn't killed just because. The story is nowhere near bad written imo. The characters are pretty iconic and i definitely don't mind Ellie being gay, i actually understand it in an apocalyptic world. You really can't pick whatever you want, so you are more welcome to experiencing new stuff. right? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game 3 days ago and earned the platinum trophy too just yesterday, it took me some time to process the game and the ending, and in my opinion there couldnt have been a better ending.. and yes one thing i was pissed about was Joels death, its not that ppl are enraged that u killed joel, they are upset because of the way they killed Joel. Ppl should realise that the game revolves around hatred and revenge, and both ellie and abbys story run parallel, at one hand ellie is furious and enraged wanting to get revenge crossing every obstacle in her way and at the other hand Abby is struggling after the stuff that went through, point is NO ONE IS THE GOOD GUY HERE, its the hate and coping with losing a loved one, the ending also in my opinion couldn't be better because if ellie would have killed abby, im sure she wont feel satisfied considering that she saw abby taking care of Lev, plus Abby has lost enough, all her friends family, she wasnt in the WLF anymore and all that, Sure ellie killed all the friends and did violent **** but that was in s fit of rage and anger, thats what naughty dog forced us to do to feel the anger, in the end Ellie was the bigger person cuz she didnt kill abby, in conclusion id giv this game a 9/10, notice how i only talked about story here yeh because if i start talking about the gameplay ill be here all day, the gameplay was **** sick and fun as **** Expand

They took a beloved game setting and destroyed it for no real reason. No one wants to play the person who kills your favorite character ... no one. The risk of killing Joel off was a risk but it needed to happen, we are meant to hate (core theme of the game) Abby and see her actions justified. The game does not deserve the hate, it is a great game with strong gameplay and a powerful story, that really makes you question is revenge necessary or does revenge only lead to more revenge (a circle). The game alos encompasses strong symbolism at the end where Ellie loses her ability to play the guitar her last connection to Joel. But as a work of art it is a triumph, both in terms of its development from a simple snow western into a doubled edged revenge plot and involving characters with backgrounds different from your typical straight white male protag. It's a significant achievement, and I would never in a million years have expected a narrative to involve more marginalized people in such a normalized way. It's refreshing, as it is cruel and visceral.

Game play wise it remained as tight if not tighter than the first, though with its length, it did begin to test my patience. But with it all most likely being the end of this IP, I really don't mind being in the world for as long as possible. Also it made me cry twice.

I’m going to steer clear of whether or not I loved or hated it, but I will offer some perspective on why I think the themes were important.

I see this game from a perspective of someone that has had to sympathize with a lot of different people that were very unsympathetic.

The last of us isn’t about the characters from TLOU1 (Complaints about Tess? Didn’t think so). That’s the problem with complaining about any given character being in the spotlight.

The story is about the last of humanity. By changing the narrative to a different set of characters, it moves the story along. By tying Ellie in, there is some continuity but the problem is that if all you came for is the hope of continuing to use the same characters over and over, it remains forever stagnant.

We don’t own this world, and there are lots of stories to be told about what humanity would be doing fending for itself. In such a hard climate, we have to remember that each character could stumble and fall at any moment and meet a very inglorious death. That is the reality of such a world. Joel made a lot of people meet those ends in part 1. No tears for those people? Didn’t think so.

We praised George R. R. Martin’s book series for being fair and equal to the characters, no matter how much you loved them. Goodness was rewarded with nothing. Don’t get me wrong, if I want to just see “life” happen, I can look outside my window - so I want this game version of “life” to be compelling and dramatic. I want there to be surprising plot twists and turns. I want there to be epic consequences to actions. Sometimes I want what I think to be the “bad” guy to not get their just desserts. If there is going to be unfairness, I just want there to be a good reason to go there. And to tell you the truth, I think there was a good reason for lots of unfairness here.

But the lesson I think that was learned here was that lots of times in both games, characters had the option to be less cruel, to turn around and go home. Joel could have not taken Ellie across the country in part 1 (remember, he was smuggling her). Ellie didn’t have to go on her journey. The mysterious woman didn’t, either. The consequences for their journeys, for doggedly pursuing those goals was to learn a harsh lesson - you take risks and pay for them. Turns out the first game had a MUCH longer ending. We just had to wait 7 years to see it.

If it upsets you that good guys can do bad things, or that bad guys can have sympathetic sides, life is going to be upsetting. Bad guys perform kind acts, good people meet unjust ends. That’s... life. TLOU1 started with a stab to the heart. The world isn’t meant to be fair, and justice is a floating concept. That is what The Last of Us as a series is meant to represent. Humanity as a whole is many stories. When you zoom out, we talk about things like “countries” and “society” as if any of those things actually mean anything at all, but when you zoom in with a microscope it gets downright complicated.

Each person you pass by on the streets got up in the morning, put on clothes, had thoughts, had emotions, and had a story before going by you for thirty seconds. If they bump into you or were rude to you, you might think of them as a terrible person - but they think the same of you - and you then forget them. Ships passing in the night. But they forget that you too had a story that led you to them.

If a main character wants justifiable revenge, well, that’s easy to sympathize with. And don’t get me wrong, I root for lovable main characters. Don’t we all?

But the original Last of Us was such a good game because we rooted for Joel in spite of his evil past. And Joel’s selfish actions are easy to forget because his story is one of redemption. In doing what he wants, we forget that his actions change the world around him, for better or worse. We forget that before we met him, he was a different man. We only see him in the original for 30 hours, and the reality is that he was a terrible person for 20 years. We sympathize with him because he shows affection for a little girl and with that we rationalize what the story tells us of the evil he wrought.

Don’t get me wrong, I am selfish. I would make the same choices. You are meant to feel as he did. And you are meant to be confused in TLOU2. Life is confusing.

I don’t think that The Last of Us Part II is meant to teach any great lessons. It’s just stories about the way humanity is, tales about what we are when we pursue vengeance sub happiness.

And we watch the full story’s journey, learning about blurred lines of good and evil, learning to sympathize and possible to feel a little queasy with that sympathy, maybe we should just realize that people aren’t “good” or “evil.” They’re just people.

If you decided before you pick up the game that you hate the characters, grow up.

The only thing that maybe isn't so good is the addition of new characters that lack character, and also the death of Joel the best character of Naughty Dog, it's awful for someone like he, another tedious thing was to play with Abby because it's really hard to get her to feel sorry for her, but then it's a great game Expand

Welp, At first, the answer is yes(to Ellie), but she knew it was no. Maybe she saw Joel's behavior to Abby's behavior(saving kid or fighting for fire gun). Of course, Abby is bad shet in this game, cause you know, kill Joel, bite Ellie's two fingers... I think Ellie try to kill Ellie like Abby did to Joel,(That's why she cut the rope what tied Abby, and fight with fist, not gun or knife), but she knew all people has reasons. But it isn't good game, I said. It is too unkind to tell this meaning to us. Make too difficult to us. Thanks to me about giving 6, dudes. Expand

The game is solid. The gameplay is ultra smooth and fun, and the addition of prone stealth and proximity mines was very welcome. Not going to lie, the jarring experience of switching to Abby bugged me (both bc she’s been the antagonist for 14 hours-ish and bc her character progression starts completely over in terms of ability unlocks). To say that was a emotional ride would be an understatement.

The payoff for playing as Abby came in the parallels between her and Joel, from craftable shivs required for stealth kills to the act of turning on her allies to save a child. I felt like she learned something about how her actions affected others.

The ending was tragic. No other words really. But overall, the game was a very enjoyable experience and well-made.

Any game, movie, book, song etc that can accomplish this is deserving of praise. While there is much to enjoy about this game, it isn’t without flaws. There is a rather large lull in the halfway point of the game. As far as the narrative, this lull makes a lot of sense. As far as creating and maintaining interest in playing, this lull is almost destructive. If you can push past the halfway point, you will be rewarded. In addition, while I personally found the ending hauntingly and terribly beautiful, it is sure to draw a hard line in the sand for many fans. On gameplay alone gives this a 10/10 for me. It's super immersive, and seamless in its transitions between payable areas and cutscenes- the qualities of a perfect cinematic game. However, the storyline was a little depressing at times, and I felt like the characters were doing things I wouldn't do; in the context of roleplaying as the character, I was able to look past those grievances.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was hyped about the game since it was announced and I have forced myself to not watch a single trailer until I got to play the game to keep the entire surprise to myself.

And what a surprise when I started the game to see Joel be beaten to death by this unknown character from an unknown group. I was taken by the guts and wanted revenge just as much as Ellie in what seemed to be a long-to be adventure to Seattle.

However, where I was first disappointed was when I thought we would have a Ellie/Dina adventure all the way from Wyoming to Seattle filled with beautiful scenaries and interesting dialogs in a TLoU1-like adventure just turned into a teleportation all the way to Seattle. From there, it was just an overdose of gunfights with enemy and infected until the part where you control Abby for the second part of the game, to re-do a Seattle-through adventure but by another point of view, which is, also, excessively filled with gunfights at the point I was just forcing myself to play in Seattle Day 3 in order to get to know the end of the story.

The end of the story, which was according to popular opinion, somehow completely rubbish was in my opinion really deep and relatable as to see Ellie's character which developed into the young lady she is now and all the terrible things she had to suffer and to see her completely, completely exhausted in the final fight with Abby and who just wants everything to stop and regrets going on such a revenge quest.

It was just overwhelmingly sad to see Ellie, which I thought had somewhat of a bright future in Tommy's camp, forced to fight again and to lose everything and everyone she loved and lived for. And to see her going back to the farm where she left Dina to see an abandonned and emptied house was a very sad yet, to me, satisfying end to the game and made me feel so sorry for Ellie.

She had everything, and this everything all went away in an instant and she lost so much more, including her soul, by going on a revenge quest accross the country. Which maybe, for some of the haters out there, could be something for them to reflect on.

In conclusion : I really loved the game and I think the story was just amazing but I think in terms of gameplay choices, there was way too many gunfights and meaningless confrontations as long with an excessively long part of playing Abby for a player that wanted to know more about Ellie. Another thing to avoid such disapointment amongst players would have been to give to the players the choice to either kill Abby or not, and possibly, see the results of our actions on Ellie's mental health.

If I would have one advice to anyone who wants to play the game after playing The Last of Us Part 1, just play it, but gradually, and just let yourself be carried by the story this game has to tell.

Unfortunately for myself, while designed by incredibly talented developers the narrative decisions along with a gameplay decision that can only be compared to the bait and switch that came in Metal Gear Solid 2 negatively impact the enjoyment and entertainment that the first 10 hours provided. Hideo Kojima made a daring and shocking choice with Metal Gear Solid 2, which had players experiencing the majority of the game playing as Raiden instead of the franchise's beloved protagonist Solid Snake. The Metal Gear Solid 2 inspired gameplay choice along with what I thought was a very poorly built story that was incredibly unsatisfying, and unsuccessful in engaging the player are what make this game so disappointing. The tremendous technical, visual, and mechanical achievements by the Naughty Dog team are heavily overshadowed by the poorly constructed story and the twelve hours of gameplay that I found stalled the momentum of the game and was just plain boring to play through. Naughty Dog has plenty to be proud of when it comes to The Last of Us Part II, they created a video game with many impressive aspects but ultimately while always important but especially with this IP the level of storytelling and the contents within the story will influence most players overall feeling of the game. I didn't like it. The backlash to this game has been deflating, to say the least. Having finished it recently, I've spent almost every moment since thinking about its story. Judging by the metacritic score, even the people who hate this game clearly care enough to review-bomb it with this kind of passion. If nothing else, this stands as a testament to the lasting influence of the first game.

While I disagree with most of the complaints I've read about this game's story, I certainly have a few gripes with the gameplay:

The combat is thrilling, an asymetric game of cat and mouse that leaves me feeling both vulnerable and unstoppable. Every weapon feels devastating. Scrambling around each battleground diving for cover and flanking enemies never gets old. If the rumors of this game getting post-launch multiplayer end up being true, I'd be ecstatic.

Gathering supplies, on the other hand, always feels like a chore instead of the treasure hunt I wish it was. It's something I'd like to skip, but the scarcity of crafting materials means you're always short on something essential.

That said, exploration itself is engaging thanks to the environmental storytelling. There are so many details tucked away that flesh out the game's world. I recall one bulletin board post in Jackson City asking if anyone had a child's coat to spare, implying someone's child has lost theirs. Below that posting, on a yellow sticky note, is a message from Dina demanding that whoever stole this kid's coat better give it back or else. It's a great expression of her character that's easily missed, but if you pay attention, there are dozens of details just like it scattered around the world.

Which is why it's really annoying when you try opening a door or squeezing through a passageway hoping to explore a side room, only to get railroaded into a cutscene that locks you out of the previous area. Everything in the game looks natural, which is great, but it means going down "the story path" is often an accident instead of a choice. The autosave feature activates frequently, meaning you have a chance of missing valuable supplies and collectibles through no fault of your own.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous, which I don't think anyone really disagrees with. The animations, however, do so much work in fleshing out each character that I cannot understand those who argue that they're underdeveloped. The quality of the motion capture technology means every nuance in each actor's performance is portrayed beautifully in the game. Every facial tic, every sidelong glance, it all expresses a wealth of inner dialogue that simply wouldn't be possible otherwise.

And that's about as far as I can go without talking about the story. The Last of Us Part 2 is, on the surface, a story about revenge. Every major action in the game is a reaction to some sin that came before it, stemming from arguably the greatest sin in this game's universe: Joel's choice to save Ellie and doom the rest of mankind. Those who played the first game know that, while they may not agree with Joel's decision, they know him enough to understand why he had to make it.

In saving Ellie, Joel saves himself from losing his humanity. He also, however, robs Ellie of the meaning she desperately needed her life to have. Joel's lie to her, that her immunity meant nothing, was the key choice that made the ending so memorable. We know Joel has done something unforgivable. We know that the consequences for his decision will likely be devastating. And for seven years, we've had to live with the question of what those consequences would turn out to be.

As of this writing, 47,676 metacritic users are upset enough about how those consequences played out that they're comparing The Last of Us Part 2 to season 8 of Game of Thrones: A conclusion so poorly executed that it retroactively ruins all that came before.

And the thing is, it's hard to argue with that. My experience with this game left me depressed, exhausted, and haunted. The consequences of Joel's decision are as brutal as they are inevitable, and The Last of Us Part 2 asks us to play, often unwillingly, as characters who are unable to avoid ruining their lives and the lives of those they care about. Every sacrifice and victory from the first game is paid back in the second with tragedy and heartbreak. Even this game's few moments of brightness are overshadowed by the coming storm.

    And yet.

I believe that everything that happens in this game could not have happened any other way. That The Last of Us Part 2 refuses to pretend that Joel's trauma would not somehow infect Ellie and everyone else around him is a massive credit in its favor. The story's job isn't to give Joel and his loved ones a happy ending. The story's job is to explore how that trauma is passed down through each character and whether or not they can escape it before it destroys them completely.

I believe it succeeds in that goal. I give this game a 10 out of 10.

Hey guys maybe think about WHY Abby killed Joel, I loved Joel as much as all of you but to say Abby is a **** character is a bit dumb. Ellie and Abby both go through tough scenarios and it makes for a story that heavily thrives on the events of the original, Also the gameplay is a HUGE upgrade from the first game's gameplay, and the graphics look pretty damn good too, I respect your decision to not like this game, the story was very subjective and more people hated it then they liked it. I liked it but I feel Naughty Dog should've thought things out a tad bit more to appeal to more people. Thanks for Listening

An amazing game, almost as good as the first. Many of the negative reviews are from people who wanted a DLC or extension of the first game, whereas the sequel we received is much more than that. It's a shame many people choose to dislike it because its not what they expected. Nevertheless, this game is a marvel in video game history. The story explores something very different than it's predecessor, and shows the more gritty reality of a postapocalyptic world. The gameplay is much more diverse and refined than the first, and every aspect that was loved in the first has been improved. Combat is especially amazing, where every situation can be approached entirely differently. Environments feel more full and alive, as if people actually inhabited it before everything turned apocalyptic. Graphics are flawless and there were several moments where I questioned whether it was real time rendering or real life. The soundtrack is just as daunting and saddening as the first one, with tunes that fill me with both nostalgia and sadness. The performances by each actor is Oscar worthy and deserves many praises. Ultimately this game is flawless, despite what people criticize it for. The story is compelling and every choice has weight that left me on the edge of my seat. A definite must play for anyone who enjoys video games, and a game that will surely last a lifetime. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This game is truly a masterpiece. Seeing all the diversity in this game was very nice. The story is fantastic, the graphics are stunning, and the acting is incredible. There isn't a single part of the game that I don't want to replay.

Incredible game. Just finished it and I'm still in awe. Although I initially didn't care much for the franchise to even have a sequel (and didn't plan on playing the game), I still did and don't regret it. I loved the first game and this one definitely gave me closure. Even though the ending was not satisfactory, it was realistic.

I made an account just to give this a review. Having literally just finished the game after playing every day for hours since release last Friday it’s very clear many of these reviews don’t come from people who actually played or finished the game. If you’re on the fence about buying this just do yourself a favour and bite the bullet. This is one of the most enjoyable, addicting gaming experiences I’ve had in years. When I had to put it down for breaks I was thinking about it in my free time. I’m 30 this year and find it hard to stick out games and finish them completely but this masterpiece plays out like a 30+ hour **** movie. It’s tense, emotional, and just **** fun. I almost cried twice during it. I spent so much time just walking around slowly enjoying the games beautiful environments. If you own a playstation you owe it to yourself to see the limits of what this generation is capable of.

My only recommendation is play on one of the last two difficulty settings to get the true experience of how intense and desperate these characters stories are. Easily one of my favourite games this gen.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
