There is always a divide, the player exists on one side of that divide, and victory is its own justification. It would have been easy for Naughty Dog to take this hackneyed approach but they do something very different. You SEE what they want to do early in the game, doubt that it will work, then end up amazed that it has. In the end, any discomfort you felt along that journey is so richly rewarded.

Never mind the social justice warfare taking place outside of the game. It's worth playing no matter what your opinion is about such things.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everything outside of the plot and pacing is phenomenal. What ND was able to do with the PS4 hardware is very impressive and a ton of work.

The gameplay is very good, controls great, level design fairly balanced.

Where the game falls flat on it's face is provide a convincing plot. Essentially the game has you see all of the blow back of Joel basically exterminating the Firefly base. One of the surgeon's daughters is Abby, so from her perspective Joel is an awful person. She's hellbent on revenge which she obtains and experiences guilt. Over time both lead characters - Abby/Ellie - become aware of each other's perspective. The player gets to experience each first hand. Abby gradually grows and tries to make amends by helping Lev and pursue the Fireflies and help restore humanity/society.

Based on what the game shows us with certainty, Ellie does not grow. After 2 years of living the good life on a farm, she effectively ends her marriage and goes on a weeks/months long quest to California to murder Abby. She finds that she's been emaciated as a slave and tortured for months. Abby still wants to leave it, but no - Ellie like a sociopath must kill. So many times I tried to walk away, and not initiate the final blow because it is so morally repulsive, but the game forces you to to end the game. She ultimately stops short of drowning Abby, but based on her return to the empty farm and leaving the farm, it's ambiguous about whether or not Ellie has grown at all as a person. Only from recent interviews do we see that she does. Had I not had that confirmation, I would have given this game a 6/10 because I have no interest in partaking in sociopathic murder porn. It's one thing to fight for survival or if the enemy doesn't give you a choice, but the game forces you to.

Based on interviews, it's clear that they didn't make Ellie's PTSD a convincing enough excuse. Abby had PTSD too, but she grew. Also from the interviews - apparently until 18 months ago the ending was to kill Abby - whoever at ND changed that you saved the franchise, it would have been GoT all over again.

Amazing game. Ballsy storyline that the Neanderthals will (and do) hate. The "not my Luke Skywalker" brigade will always attack a story that portrays their "heroes" as flawed in anyway. It's the humanity that means something to a character's arc. The imperfection. The fallibility. This game is brilliant.

I would give this game a 10, but it's just not a 10. It does quite a few things wrong where I would put it in an 8.5-9 range. First of all, this game makes a lot of bold decisions, and it's because of these bold decisions why the user rating is so low, HOWEVER, I think some of these decisions were necessary for the game to work. Naughty Dog took a huge risk and I think it mostly paid off. Unlike most people, I grew to love all of the characters and understood why they made the decisions that they did. I hated some characters at first, (some may know who I'm talking about) but put myself in their shoes and asked myself "What would I do?" and I always came to the exact same conclusion. I would do the exact same thing they did.

The gameplay is the exact same as the first one, so if you liked the first game's gameplay, you'll like this one as it's a bit more enhanced and intense. If the game is too easy (like most reviewers say it is) I advise you turn the difficulty up. There are SO many accessibility options that NO one ever talks about. This game is insane with how much you can customize and look in to the options.

I don't need to talk about graphics. Stunning. Best graphics I've ever seen on any console, ever.

But the story. This story will only reach a few many. I can't advise everyone to buy this game, cause there is no 50/50 chance you will love or hate this game. I simply can't say it. Based on the reviews that I've seen here on metacritic. There is a 25% chance you will love this game, and a 75% chance you will hate it. And that's mainly because of the bold decision they take right at the beginning of the game. But if you have the balls to get through that, and not turn off your ps4 or uninstall the game, you will go through the rest of the game and see that it's not all that bad. You'll get the CONTEXT needed and by the 2nd half of the game, if you still don't sympathize with one of the main characters, than there's a good chance you just can't/ won't see what the game is trying to do. That is where I believe Naughty Dog kind of failed, and why I'd give this game an 8.5. That, coupled with the BIG scene at the beginning of the game that should've gone down differently. Luckily for me though, I saw where Naughty Dog was going with this story.

A lot of people may write this story off as some stupid revenge story, but it's much more than that, it's a revenge plot that does something different that I've seen very little people seem to notice. It's infuriating to me, but if you haven't bought the game yet I suggest you give it a try. Don't listen to the crap reviews.

Notice how the positive reviews are going up more than the negative reviews each and every day because more and more people are PLAYING through the whole game, and understanding it for what it actually is. That's all I'm going to say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. !!SPOILERS!!

I genuinely hated this game for a solid 4-6 hours into the second half of the story. I kept telling myself the gamey would have to pull off a miracle in the end for this to all be worth it. While calling the ending a miracle is definitely hyperbole, the game ultimately succeeded in what I personally needed it to in order for it to all be worth it in the end. This game made me feel sick to my stomach, it made me question myself and it genuinely disturbed me. Some may see this as shock value but, trauma really is shocking. That is why it is trauma. As someone who has dealt with trauma, Ellie's journey in this sequel is deeply personal to me. Experiencing Ellie's trauma along with her via the sudden flashes of Joel really gives the game a dark sense of realism and depth. Ellie's episode in the barn was heartbreaking and felt as though my heart was being torn from my chest. I wanted nothing more than to hug Ellie in that moment, to somehow comfort her.

No game or film has ever moved me like this. You have so many people on the hate bandwagon, saying this game is poorly written because they are incapable of discerning subtext or decoding non-linear story structures. This is a game that should only be experienced free of leaks and spoilers. If ever there was a story that could be tainted by such a thing, it is this one. Certain individuals will simply close themselves off and reject the story in its entirely due solely to the fact that said scenes exist rather than endeavor to understand what they mean in the broader context.

There are many people succumbing to the social pressures of their in-group to despise this game and it is more tragic than the story itself. In years time, I know many will look back more favorably upon this game. This is certainly a story that requires effort from the viewer, something gamers keep claiming they want but refuse to accept it when they finally get it. This is the most mature story I've ever experienced in a video game, not just when it comes to themes but with what it asks of the player. You will be challenged, you will be expected to discern subtext and you will be expected to piece together the non-linear narrative. If this is something you are not comfortable doing, then I can certainly see why you would dislike this narrative.

This is not a generic revenge story. Those that say it is are the same who say that !!SPOILER!! Ellie should have killed Abby. The fact that Ellie lets her go and the reason behind it is precisely why this game is so much more than a generic revenge story. In the very moment Ellie decides to spare Abby, she breaks the cycle. In that very moment, Ellie has finally forgiven Abby for what she did, forgiven Joel for taking from her what she perceived to be her life's purpose but most of all, she has forgiven herself... You see, this game is not about Ellie's war with Abby, it is about Ellie and Abby's wars with themselves.

Ellie blames herself for Joel's death because she is the reason he made the decision to save her, despite what that meant. She blames herself for being immune. She blames herself for not being able to provide a cure. She blames herself for being unable to forgive Joel for what he did; being unable to reconcile before his death. In the very moment Ellie spares Abby, instead of seeing a traumatic flash of Joel's bloody face, we see a flash of Joel sitting in a chair on the porch, playing his guitar. Finally she is able to let go of her guilt, finally she is able to forgive Joel for doing what he did to save her, finally she is able to forgive Abby for her transgressions against her broken family, finally she is able to forgive herself for being the catalyst for this entire series of events.

This story is deeply disturbing, tragic, heartfelt and has a bleak sense of realism. This game is not a window into an ideal world which audiences are so comfortable with. It is a mirror that reflects the darkness of humanity back at you and forces you to feel and see things you are not comfortable with. That is why this game is so divisive. Some people just cannot handle the mirror, they prefer the window.

This is the most important game I have ever experienced and I suspect it may change my life moreso than the first installment.

The story could have been way better than it ended up being. I mean come on Joel didn't have to die that way. And for those who keep complaining about the fact that he was foolish to trust Abby , just keep in mind that he was trying to change somehow for Ellie's shake. Also about Abby I am not sure if it was better for her to die or not. I was a bit confused at this moment. Ellie at the end is shown to be left behind by Dina but there's something debatable on the ending. In my opinion Dina didn't leave her, they just moved back on Jackson and Ellie came back only to find Joel's guitar making it the ending she deserved, leaving the past behind. Also I enjoyed playing as Abby too as it was a more realistic way to show that every story has two sides to be told. I cannot say that I liked Abby but at some point I sympathized with her. It was an unforgettable 30 hours gaming experience but I am not sure if I am going to revisit this game at least for a a long time. Expand

The acting, graphics, storytelling, writing, gameplay, level design, progression, pacing, art direction, lighting, enemy and character designs are all top notch and a new step forward for Naughty Dog and the industry as a whole.

A must play game for anybody, and a generation defining experience for me. The seven year wait was more than worth while.

If you've only seen the leaks, and already decided that you don't like the game, I urge you to reconsider. The leaks don't do the game justice, in my opinion. Let's start with what I think the game does well, and then what it does not so well.

    Pros

Graphical fidelity: Arguably one of the best looking games ever made. Lighting, character models, art-style, etc. are all phenomenal
Acting: The best acted game I've ever played, period.
World-building: All the artifacts, environments, and character interactions really make the world feel real, lived in, believable.
Stealth gameplay: The ability to go prone, craft a silencer, and use silent weapons like bows and knives make for really engaging stealth.
Story: This has been the most controversial aspect of the game, but I really appreciate that the story is risky. It wasn't the safe option for ND and I like that they took a risk. I also think that risk paid off, the story they told was really impactful to me. We've seen revenge stories before, but I think this game says something unique and presents it in a unique way.

    Cons

Pacing: As much as I like the story, I think the pacing is a little off, especially when you get to the halfway point. I also think there's a little too much down-time in game play, it doesn't have enough story set pieces for my liking.
Gameplay nitpicks: The lack of a lock-on feature is really frustrating, especially when dealing with large groups of enemies. The addition of a dodge feature is useful and very welcome, but I wish I could lock on as well.

Overall, I think the game deserves the hype. It makes a lot of bold choices that I really respect and I think it's worth playing if you're a fan of the first game. Don't just make assumptions based on the leaks.

To start, I want to state that I’m a lesbian (so...yeah, I’m a woman). That being said, it should mean something that I CLEARLY have no issue with Ellie being a gay. That being said, it should mean something that I CLEARLY have no issue with Ellie being a gay. However, I don’t think anybody else really cares she is either. A crap ton of people kept incorrectly assuming Abby is trans (she’s not—the character “Lev” is), and their horrendous “It’s ma’am” comments GIVE THE REST OF US (reviewers) A BAD NAME. Don’t you get it? You’re giving stans/critics/journalists/game developers more ammunition to say, “SeE?? T0xiC PlaYerS R anTi-LGBT!” Your loud-mouthed bull**** is drowning out the real criticism people are having with the game. Listen. The game is BEAUTIFUL. The graphics are just...wow. I can’t even describe how intoxicated I was from the visuals in this game. I took several screenshots because the game was just so gorgeous. Also, the acting is SUPERB. This is why I am absolutely annoyed people are rating this anything lower than a 5. For god’s sakes...you’re just being an **** and you know it. People put their heart and soul into making this game. You’re crapping on their work because of ONE MAN—Neil Druckmann. Talk about agenda driven...0/10 reviewers are purely driven by their own hate-filled agenda. They want to hurt Naughty Dog and burn down all that go with it. You’re trash. Have some respect for those that had NOTHING to do with the story. They just did their jobs. With that said, I struggled between a 6 or a 7. The reasons I gave above certainly warrant a 7, but the negatives just outweighed the positives, I’m afraid. To start, I found the flashbacks so chaotic and improperly placed. I found myself INCREDIBLY annoyed at the start of the game when Ellie and Jesse are talking about “the kiss” that happened “last night” and there was a tense moment between Ellie and Joel. By the time we got to that specific flashback, it was like, what? 15 hours into the game? Maybe longer? Idk because the game was so damn long. I literally forgot all about it by the time the flashback occurred. It took me awhile to piece it together because it was just randomly squeezed in hours and hours later into the game. Which leads me to my next point. The game was just too damn long. I honestly don’t think I would have been too bothered by the length if they didn’t keep flashing back to things they barely made references to earlier in the game. The entire story is one long jigsaw puzzle you have to piece together. If it was a bit more linear, I don’t think I would’ve minded it so much. Last but not least...Abby. I’m sorry, Neil, you just didn’t sell me on her. I didn’t care about her story. I get that she lost her dad. I honestly get where you were going with it and the message you were trying to convey, but you forget that I had played an ENTIRE game with Ellie and Joel—characters I came to love and hold close to my heart. Ellie had so much more behind her vengeance in my eyes. Maybe I’m just being stubborn and closed-minded, but I just couldn’t see Abby’s vengeance equaling the pain Ellie had. And then you made me brutally FIGHT Ellie?? I had no choice. You made me freaking attack Ellie in the theater. I kept putting my controller down because I just hated it. Ugh. I freaking hated it. Idk man...it was a bold move, Neil. I get it. It just didn’t resonate with me. I’m sorry. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As already mentioned, this story is a continuation of the first part and demonstrates the consequences of the events of the first part. The plot is built on revenge and hatred, what violence leads to and what is the price of justice.
Ellie, wants only revenge for the crime because of which she is tormented by a thirst for justice with this and for this she goes to Seattle to search for the guilty.
The city is a battlefield in which there are two fractions:
    Seraphites - ‘’ scars ’’ and ‘’ WLF ’’ or ‘’ Wulfs ’’ - Washington Liberation Front.

I won’t stutter about the gameplay, it’s awesome, exactly like everything else, and therefore I would like to discuss and tell, as much as possible without a spoiler script.

In the course of the story, we will explore a city that looks amazing. I want to explore every building and every brick with its facing, in this case, the developers tried their best.
Ally, obsessed with revenge, she goes on to do very scary things, the game is very cruel and if the first part seemed cruel to you, then here cruelty is multiplied by 200%, which only colors the game. There are also bright memories of Ellie, which dilute this darkness.
The first half is only an introductory part, the second half reveals the other side of the coin and this needs to be seen and played. The game may seem prolonged and incomprehensible, but it is necessary to reveal the characters and enhance the effect of the ending of the game.
Music plays even more on your emotions, makes you cry and rejoice. Without a doubt, the composer Gustavo Santaolalla has great respect, we take off our hat.
But the juice itself is the last chapters. Imagine Tony Montana at the end of a ‘’ Scarface ’’, but only you are the one who attacks his palace. It is here that Ellie is revealed as a cruel and merciless girl who has no choice but to revenge. The game plunges a knife into you, which twists the blade inside your tissues and makes it clear how thorny the path of revenge is? What is the price of revenge? Was it worth it? What remains after the completion of justice? Does it make sense to get revenge? Soak your hands or entrust it to fate?
It is about this game, about the continuous cycle of violence that generates even more violence. Revenge freaks Ellie, provoking the desire to kill, after which the question arises: ‘’ How are you better than this? ’’.
What if, sooner or later, justice comes to the person who deserves it?
Each player will make a conclusion for himself after passing, but the story will not leave anyone indifferent. Perhaps you will hate the game or vice versa. I would like to tell more, but all the details, even minor ones, are the whole mechanism from which this machine works. The story is masterpiece, there was no such thing in games or even the movie industry.
Everything is perfect in this story, but most of all I want to again mention what promise the ending carries, demonstrating the result of Ellie's revenge? What did she have to become for her purpose? What sacrifices did she make?
The game leaves very sad emotions, it is merciless to the player in the same way as Ellie when she opens the throat with a knife to the next “Woolf” or “Seraphit”: calmly and cruelly. Indeed, everyone had the thought of revenge, how would you commit it, when you think that you will enjoy the process, but in fact you will get even more pain. It will not distinguish you from the one who deserved the punishment, you will not become yourself anymore after what you have done. You spoil yourself and The Last of Us Part II makes you think about it. In the end, I can say that this is the best game I have ever played and perhaps the best that exists in the gaming industry. This is an amazing piece of art. If you are among the viewers, plot plums for 3 hours and have constructed a negative opinion, the conclusion is obvious who you are. In this game, there is no agenda for the LSS and LGBT propaganda, this is not and never has been.
This is a very unique and ambitious project, for which I can pat and say only:
    Bravo, Neil, bravo. 10/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story:
This game makes you feel a lot. You get all the emotions. Happy, sad, joyful, depressed. Everything's planned. A lot of the reviews were made negative within the first two days of the game’s launch. On day 2 of playing the game, I was at the character switch, as I suppose many others were. And just like the many others, I was mad. This is where many decided to quit the game, and write their hate review. However, I kept playing. At the end of the game, I understood what the developers wanted. I understood AND FELT the ending because I put my bias towards the main characters aside. Once you do that, the story’s flawless. It’s very easy to follow along as long as you stick through with it. For example, a lot of people get confused at the start of the game. However, if you play past the confusing part, the pieces all start to fit together. Gameplay:
It’s simply perfect. They didn’t change much, but what they did change added only more depth from the first and made it a lot more smooth. There’s also a lot more ammo and material to be found around the world, even on the higher difficulties. Why I rated the game a 9 and not a 10:
Simply from lack of content. At the moment we have a new game plus mode, but unlike the original, there’s no character skins or game filters. I was expecting a lot more skins, even branching out to weapon skins. Maybe the devs will add this later, but I’m rating what the game launched with. Overall:
Amazing experience, truly emotional. While the ending did not make me happy, it wasn’t suppose to. The last time I felt this way about a game, was when in MGS3, you find out Big Boss was doing everything for her country, and that no one would know her sacrifice except for you and a few select others. Just because a game doesn’t have sunshine and rainbows at the end, doesn’t make it any less of a terrific game. Side Note (spoilers):
The Last of Us 1 had a sad ending. Joel shoots up an entire hospital and you can tell at the end that there is a tear in the relationship between Joel and Ellie. The Last of Us 2 has a sad ending as well, although this one is more blatant and extreme. So to everyone complaining that the game is too emotional, yet enjoyed the first game, were you just ignoring the ending of the first one, or too oblivious to see it? No one in this game’s universe is a good protagonist. Joel is a flawed hero. We only see his side of the story when he’s with Ellie. They mention countless times of how he had a bad past, from small conversations with Ellie, to arguments with Tommy and Vic, also the scene when they get off the highway and he knows about the ambush. The only difference is that at the end of The Last of Us 2, we have a strong bias towards Joel, which makes us hate the other character. Had the game been flipped around, and we’d follow the other character besides Joel and Ellie, we’d grow to hate them as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics were impressive, but there were several glitches that ruined it at times. The worst part for me was the story, compared to the first it was sad to see so many elements that made the first one great thrown away. All stories and shows seem to want to kill off loved main characters anymore cause they think they are making something shocking and surprising, only to do it in the laziest way possible and hope that making it graphic and violent will be impressive enough somehow, so it wasn't original, it wasn't innovative, it was a bad move, I only every hated the antagonist after that, and lost even more interest when forced to play as them. The ending is just tragic and makes everything up to that point meaningless. Might as well have just stayed back in the town and forgot the whole thing. In creating The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog attempts to completely shy away from the beauty and themes of made players love its predecessor. Though the the developers try to create a new complex experience for fans, they end up creating a jumbled experience that forces players into an emotional roller coaster.

For this review, I am not going to talk about the game play and graphics. I feel like Naughty Dog needs to understand that fans of the game don't play the Last of Us for the game play, rather they play for the investing story. With all the specs of the game aside, the story that the games writers created surrounding vengeance falls flat.

First off, writers of the game choose to use Joel Miller, the main character of the first game, only as symbol of sorrow and the past. Naughty Dog has completely thrown away this character, and with it the relationship between Joel and Ellie that players were hoping to see. Joel's death only serves to add emotion, to push to the plot forward, and to emphasize the message that Naughty Dog is trying to convey. I am not saying that Joel shouldn't die whatsoever, I am saying that Naughty Dog should've used the character ins a more meaningful way in the game, allowing the player to still experience the game alongside him. To make things worse, prior to release the game was advertised as if Joel would be a main part of the story line. This choice buy the Naughty Dog is absolutely evil as they are basically promising buyers that the game will be one thing when it is something completely different. Through this, Naughty Dog is forcing players to play through their story.

    SPOILERS

Joel deserved to be written off in a better way, that's the simple answer to all of everyone's outcries. Was Abby such a bad character? No. In fact, if Naughty Dog Part 2 only about Joel and Ellie, Joel dies, Ellie kills whoever killed him and in Part 3 you play as Abby and her story. Everyone would have been happy. In fact dare i say, Abby and Lev had the closest thing to what Joel and Ellie had in the Last of Us (first game).

I think the combination of playing as Joel's killer, seeing him die in such a way, and then trying to push certain concepts and ideas was a bit much. Games should show and not tell, but Part 2 couldn't live up to the hype. I will say that outside of Joel's death, this was a great game. A great ride, not the story or ending I wanted nor the path I would take at all. But adding a compelling and motivating plot (kill the people who killed our love character) + great gameplay (outside of the jump button being almost pointless) + amazing graphics. These are things that we can all enjoy, The game isn't as bad as people are saying, in fact even though i started off hating Abby and wanting her to die. And yes even I was like I don't wanna play as her i wanna keep playing as Ellie, the Abby storyline was enjoyable and well done.

Pretty much horrible way to start the journey, amazing journey, bad transition, good (dare i say great) other viewpoint, bad ending.

    Story is a 6/10, gameplay is a 9/10, graphics 9/10 = 24/30 (8/10)

Very fitting continuation of the first part. Maybe not as good as the first part, which is almost impossible anyway. Nevertheless 10/10 as both games are linked and can't be considered as single titles.

Who didn't really understand the first part - which is OK - should definitely avoid the second part. Gameplay is OK, but there are other titles that do most things much better. This is

Who didn't really understand the first part - which is OK - should definitely avoid the second part. Gameplay is OK, but there are other titles that do most things much better. This is not enough to enjoy the game.
But who - like me - after the credits of the first part half an hour after the end of the credits still sat speechless on the sofa and wondered what just happened and had to process the emotional rollercoaster ride of the last minutes will find a worthy continuation in the second part.

The established world is meaningfully expanded and captivates with breathtaking variety concerning the artistic realization. Not only the graphics are "awesome", but also the choice of locations and their extremely detailed elaboration is fascinating.

The story answers most of the open questions of the first part, but also dares to take new paths with unconventional and courageous steps in the demands on the player. It's not a game like many others and dares a lot of new things - a player who gets involved in the game (especially emotionally) will find a pearl that is rare. But TLoU2 is definitely not a game for players who just want to be entertained. It is a further development of "video games" - some like it, some don't. The days when the whole community was feverishly waiting for a title and loved the game equally are over. Long gone.

TLoU2 may or may not please you. The game forces the player not to like it, it's up to the player to find out.But if you didn't question the first part and didn't get the real masterpiece of the first part, TLoU2 will torture you. Whoever has opened up this level of the first part for himself - have fun! ... or good entertainment? Cruelly good experience? I don't know what to wish the inclined player. Only one thing you have to bring along for sure - time. If you play the game for an hour in the evening and stretch it over weeks, you will probably not be able to experience the full spell of the game.

    Many thanks to Naughty Dog!

It might not be what everyone wanted out of it, but it's use of storytelling and how it explores themes on revenge, forgiveness, morality and redemption is well crafted. It's definitely a game that is meant to be diverse for people who were fans of the first game's story, but this is a whole new story and the only way people will enjoy it is by taking the time to understand both sides of the situation that goes on among these characters.

Although the game might be polarized by some fans, people might hopefully start to appreciate it more as time goes by. I for one believe these Last of Us games will go down in history and be considered one of the greatest video games ever made. If there is a Part 3, this game might even be considered The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. I am definitely eager to see if Naughty Dog will decide to give this franchise one last game to not only complete it as video game trilogy, but to Ellie's story overall. This game alone proves that she is the true protagonist of these games.

The game was beautiful. It was not supposed to be taken as a canon. The Last of Us ended with the life in Jackson. The whole revenge plot was a shot a Naughty Dog missed but fair play to them. I want to but I can't hate this game because it is just so shocking and surprising. Expand

After waiting many years for this game I can say its lived up to my high expectations and is well worth more than the £70 i paid for the special edition. The game-play is phenomenal and is a great step forward from the first game.
The graphics are stunning and full of detail in every corner.
In my opinion the story is not quite as good as the first game mostly due to being split into two

In my opinion the story is not quite as good as the first game mostly due to being split into two playable characters, but this can easily be overlooked as the characters are well developed. Most of the negative reviews this game has been receiving are vastly blown out of proportion and my assumption is that most people did not give the game a chance and jumped on the bandwagon of hate.

    SPOILERS!!!!

Lets start with a fact, the graphics, voice acting and setting are stunning, but beyond this obvious achievement, AS A SEQUEL this game is a undeniable disaster in terms of story telling. Standing alone it achieves much, BUT IT IS NOT A STAND ALONE TITLE.
The story is a filled with cheap tropes and with part 1 in mind is such a let down that it feels like a chore to play beyond its 2nd hour. The idea of character continuity is non-existent and there is no payoff to the story beyond the fact that it is told. The perspectives feel forced and there are so many cringe decisions the player is forced to make for the sake of attempting (and FAILING) to illicit a certain response that it honestly feel like sandpaper on your mind. Very few games make you hate want to kill your own character but this game takes this to a new level.

For those reviews you see praising this "Stunning and brave" telling of a "true" and revealing story about human suffering are shallow at best, and must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Just because a story is controversial doesn't make it a good story. But sure, play it for yourself if you want to grasp the depths of how deeply you can despise the character you are forced to play. You can expect to have forced empathy shoved down your throat with little to no effort placed on connecting the player to the character's struggles on an actual emotional level.
It's almost as if the game expects you to sympathize out of virtue, which is **** let's be honest.
With this lack of actual character development in mind, you can look forward to a story that leaves nothing gained for the player in terms of closure, beyond a ONCE AGAIN... FORCED... and so pathetically terribly at that, garbage excuse for some kinds of emotional forgiveness that is hollow and barren AT BEST.

The game is just another absolutely terrible story that tries to vilify the characters you loved and make you question your emotional connection to them by highlighting their bad choices in the past and painting them from the perspective of others who suffered. While in theory this might be an edgy commentary on the human condition its NOT A GOOD BASIS FOR A SEQUEL TO A STORY which was based on making you connect with the characters you are now told to hate. It LITERALLY spits on your emotions... scummy move.

So what does this all mean?

You get a story that throws your emotional bond from game one into the trash, then spits on it.
Then very forcefully shoves an attempted new emotional bond down your throat trying to get you to feel something for and understand the actions of the character that just became your MOST HATED character in the story. Then at the end, this she-devil of a character you still even after 10 hours of gameplay AS, hate with the very essence of your soul, gets away scott free and leaves the "world" worse off than before in the players mind. No payoff, nothing, thats it.... Replayability.... NONE, you hate the whole plot and are just glad this **** of **** storytelling is over.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. wow, this game is unlike anything I've ever played, it takes a concept that's been done a million times, revenge, and makes does it so well. at the beginning of the game, the character Abby kills Joel, you view this as an unforgivable act but as the story progressives you see Ellie become what she vowed to kill, she shoots a pregnant woman and does some pretty unforgivable things when taking into consideration Abby's story, speaking off Abby's story, once again ND knocks it out of the park, this character who does an unforgivable thing is humansed and while that isn't special in it's self, the fact that the game kinda makes you root for her is incredible, you start to seriously care about her and lev's relationship. the supportig charecters are all great dina, Jesse, lev, yara, Tommy and owen. now this game doesn't pull its punches, in the end most of the characters are dead. a lot of people have an issue with this, i do not, the way i see it, every death is a consequence, Jesse for instance only dies because Ellie killed owen and Mel, yara died because lev wanted to reason with his mom, every death moves the story forward in a forfilling way. for all the positives of this game, there are a few negatives, one is that at points in the game, the gameplay became stale and more of a chore than actual fun, there were points were i would fall threw a floor and be angry because i just wanted to progress the story not go through more corridors with a few infected. my other negative is the stories pacing, i think the way the game is structured could have been much better, you play as Ellie for 3 days, the tension is rising... and then your put back to the beginning... yeah i didn't like that, i would have much preferred playing one day as Ellie, then one day as Abby. this would mean the stakes were always rising and you could more easily draw parrels between there stories, plus you wouldn't get sick of playing as Abby, while i love her character there were points were i felt like i wanted a bit more of ellie. despite those flaws, i have to give this game a 9, its an incredible experience, and i know i wont win any popularity contests by saying this, my personal game of the year, assuming cyberpunk doesnt blow my exspectaions out of the water Expand

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
