This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Im on the last chapter of the game and i still want abby to die a horrible death. Naughty dog has done a terrible job at making me not hate abby or her friends. You know you've failed at developing your new characters to be likeable when I shouted with joy at manny getting shot in the head by tommy and seeing his eye explode. I cheered tommy on when he had the upper hand on abby and screamed kill her several times. This is the most generic and tedious revenge story ever with the most obvious message. Yes mr neil druckmann we get it revenge and violence is bad mkay. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is focused on the progression of time.
Game starts with Joel cleaning a guitar to give to Ellie. A metaphor. He's cleaning his past, it doesn't go away. Yet he tries the best that he can, he gives the guitar to Ellie. Time passes, when he gives it to Ellie, he tells her a joke:

what's the downward of eating a clock? It's time consuming.

All the game revolves around this. Spending time doing things we think might be important, wasting time because those action take us away time to do things we really like with people we love.
Revenge is one of those time wasting actions.
This point is carried till the very end of the game.

A specific fact puts everything in motion. In the prologue, Joel is killed by Abby. That's where the game starts.
We're put in Ellie's shoes seeking revenge. That's not a "bad scene", that's not "bad writing". That's the main plotline, that's what people miss about this (maybe because they didn't even play the game).

So, we're in Ellie's shoes and we are going after the WLF, Washington Liberation Front, a rebel group. Most of the game we're her seeking revenge. The narration lasts for 3 days, with flashbacks from the very end of The Last of Us to the very start of The Last of Us Part II. There's also another point of view. Abby's point of view, the one who killed Joel. Narration, takes the same diegetic timing, three days and four years flashbacks.

We then discover Abby avenges his father's dead killing Joel. And Ellie avenges Joel killing everyone Abby loved.
Everything is cyclical. Revenge brings even more revenge. Death brings death.

The Last of Us revolves around the impossibility to separate what's bad from what's good. Subjectivity and pragmatism has always been the main focus of the first game. In the end we're left with just question, was Joel right? He saved the only person he really cared about, but he left the rest of the world dying. They put the whole Abby's story to be certain that you could understand that all the people (and sigh dogs) you killed with Ellie (and you didn't care about, because they were just NPCs) were actually someone for someone else than you. That's the whole point of both games. Choiches. Consequences.
In the first game we're left with Joel killing people to save the one he really loves. Someone kills him because of this. Was he right? He killed for a loved one. Was Abby right? She also killed for a loved one. The point is: everyone is right, everyone is wrong. They did what they did because they felt it was the right thing to do. It was not the same for other people.

In the end after a year, we are almost in another world, but Ellie is restless and still wants to kill Abby. She finds her a few states far, in California, where she's been held captive and tortured for two whole months. Ellie tries to kill what's left of her again, but in the end she gives up.
Abby was wrong keeping on with the revenge loop, killing Joel. Ellie makes the right decision. She's not like Abby, she can be better. Yet she wasted a lot of time trying to have justice, when it was just another revenge. In the end, there's no one for her anymore. But, at the same time she found herself again, breaking the cycle, not killing anyone. That's the point.

In the first game we save Ellie, someone else dies.
In both games we kill people, someone else life will be over.

I too felt like **** seeing Joel dying. But that's the whole point of the game. We feel like **** That's what a character might have felt seeing someone who they cared for dying. The game aimed for that "feel like **** feeling", they wanted you to feel anger against Abby. But in the end it tries to explain that anyone can "feel like **** every one can feel anger. Abby too.
In conclusion, you felt like **** That's good because you were supposed to feel like **** but you're supposed to understand that you're not the only one. And who's right being angry? Everyone. You are justified in your anger, so Abby was. At the same time, no one. Someone you loved died, someone who they loved died too. If you want a punishment in a dialectical meaning, you also get it. Both Ellie and Abby lost everyone they loved at the hands of the other one, except for one only person. In the end Abby is also captured and tortured, a semi-extradiegetic revenge always used in storywriting, where the revenge is not served in the main plot but it is by something in the same universe.

Characters makes you feel in world full of people, as opposed to the first game. You're not the only one fighting this, you got supportive people all along the way. And this is the main difference from the first game. You have someone to fight for. You have someone who would fight for you.

Level design changes a bit from the first game, as gameplay does. It's built in a more vertical way, and the world is biggerUnfortunatelly nomorespace i canttalk more about characters+gameplay+leveldesign bcse talkd toomuch sorry

Engrossing story. Well developed characters. Visually stunning. Brutal and upsetting.

When I booted up the game for the first time I like many others was on the lookout for virtue signalling and after all the hours I have put into the game I can safely say they appear in either very minor capacities or not at all. TLOU 2 is a fantastic continuation of the first game and touches on the adage 'an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind'. Tommy and Joel became utterly stupid and have nothing in common with their counterpart from the first game and Ellie has no personality at all now she`s just gay. Don`t get me wrong I think it`s fine that she is gay but if being gay is the most interesting thing about the character you have made you seriously did something wrong at least Lev had some character development. Naughty Dog tried so hard to check all the political check boxes that they forgot to write a story that is actually believable. Overall I would give this game a 5/10 because if you ignore the story and the characters the game play and level design is really well made but because of the false advertising from Naughty Dog I just can`t go above a 0/10. Vale ressaltar que os espaços são muito mais amplos e incentivam muito mais à exploração. As áreas de combate também estão muito melhor construidas, transmitindo um realismi enorme.

Those that helped in their quest for revenge got what came to them. Most of them died but that those who survived in the journey are forever marked by that experience. A lesson learned that for those who wish to walk that road. Ask yourself... Are you willing to sacrifice your loved ones and innocent bystanders to get what you want? Ellie learned at the end of the day, with all that blood in her hands it wasn't worth it anymore.
Personally Abby should have died but she did suffered enough at the end when her friends and lover died... her body was also tortured and abused then left to bake in the sun. Thinking about Lev as well as his actions... loses and torture throughout the story. Abby was the only person he has in this life. Should ellie take that from him? Would she or even Joel be ok with all this? Hard to say but in my gut I knew killing abby wasn't the answer.

Story aside I loved the puzzles, safe cracking solving, scenery and graphics! The game is very beautiful and polished. 10/10 a very thought provoking game.

ND did almost the same with Uncharted - I remember how I feared for Nate during the last couple hours of U4. But TLOU - as a series, it’s the most adult storytelling you‘ll find in a game to date. This shows, what the medium is capable of.

The ending left me in tears.

Not to mention the technological excellent the game is made of. It looks so incredibly good...you have to see and hear it.

I promise you, it’s not the overhyped game, a lot of people think it is. It’s a real masterpiece.
Take the ride, you won’t regret it. Even if it’s hard to swallow all the violence especially towards the end. It’s worth to get through it.

I am so happy, a studio like ND exists. So curious to see, what they’re gonna do on PS5.

Guns are varied and customisable. Hand to hand combat is more involved and manages to replace most QTEs with something that feels more like gameplay.

The graphics are out of this world. I was wondering whether I needed to wait for the PS5 for the game to look good enough, but the PS4 looks every bit as good as the E3 trailers, just with lower resolution, some aliasing and dithering artifacts, and some slightly nauseating effect while panning the camera quickly (temporal upsampling artifacts maybe?). Still worth it for the amazing detail on characters and environments.

The story has upset some people (spoiler time) but I liked it. The game feels like a hopeless cycle of murder and revenge, but doesn't feel repetitive by the end. It was always building towards something, but not quite what I wanted. (Full spoilers time) Abby is a better person than Ellie and I kind of wish Abby had killed her. I cared about Abby and her friends, I cared about Dina and Jesse. I understood where Ellie was coming from.

I empathized with all of them (especially Yara and Lev). I chose my side, you can choose yours, but Naughty Dog's portrayal of humans doing human things is top notch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think the fact that so many of these reviews are 0/10, and that it got review bombed with 0/10 keyboard smash reviews right at the hour it was released just goes to show how whiny gamers are. Sure you might not like the game, but it’s clearly not a 0/10. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of legitimate criticisms to the game but there are tons of illegitimate, petty ones too. Of course the game isn’t perfect: it’s constantly bleak with few moments of levity, it’s endlessly violent, and it transforms a girl we knew as a beacon of hope into a revenge driven slaughtering machine. But I hate to break it to people: the world these games take place in is constantly bleak. It’s endlessly violent. And Ellie goes through this transformation to mirror Abby; a girl who had her father and community slaughtered by Joel. By US as the player. It might make people upset, and as tragic as it was, it makes sense to me that Joel’s actions caught up to him. And again, it might make people upset, but it makes sense to me that in the end Ellie lets Abby go. I think it shows a lot about her character and that somewhere in there she still has that goodness that we see in the first game. Ellie knows that this is the woman who killed her surrogate father. But she also sees that Abby has become a surrogate mother for Lev, and chooses to make her peace and break the cycle of violence and revenge. I’ll finish by saying that I definitely enjoyed the first game more. But that doesn’t mean this is a bad game: not in the slightest. As the user rating begins to rise (since people who have actually played the game and not peeked at spoilers online are starting to leave their thoughts), I think we’ll begin to see proof that while the irrational negativity of the members of the video game community is often relentlessly, impossibly loud, once they quiet down, it opens up the room for actual conversation, which I’m eager to see. P.S. stop being dicks to the actors that were in the game. You might hate it but they had nothing to do with the writing. Expand

Technically, this game is an absolute masterpiece. This game looks even better than Uncharted 4 somehow. However, neither of these are the controversial aspect of the game. The narrative direction has pissed a lot of people off, to say the least. Some are justified, but most of the negative reviews you see here are something along the lines of "they don't respect the characters." I can't really elaborate further without spoilers. Personally, I loved the way the plot progressed, because it felt like I was in the pages of a gripping novel, the kind that you can't put down. That's the best way to think about this game, as a novel. Tension ratchets up and simmers off and ratchets up again. It's messy, the objective you start out with is never achieved. It's frustrating. In that way, I think it emulates real life far better than the first game, which is decidedly more movie-like. If you don't like reading, you're probably going to struggle with this story. It isn't for everyone.

This game has grown on me in the weeks since completion, and I have a great respect for Naughty Dog pushing the bounds of storytelling in video games. There are issues that I have with the game; enough to knock it down to a nine in fact. However, if you own a PS4, do yourself a favor and buy this wonderful mess.

I couldn’t describe what I felt throughout playing the game, I loved it, but I was extremely sad too. I started caring about Abby, who I hated for what she did to Joel. How we see her side of the story is something I did not like in the beginning, but throughout the game having played as her, I felt such empathy for what was first a villain. Ellie wanted revenge, but the path of revenge is an endless one. She became what she was hunting. And in the end it was all not worth it. She became selfish and lost what she had built, ending up alone. Only to wonder where she will end up.. This game is a masterpiece in all aspects. Expand

You may become enraged at times or suffer from a broken heart, but any story that can make you feel that way deserves maybe a little attention. We get to see two characters filled with rage and despair who see each other as pure evil, and start to see their actions weigh heavily on them.

It's something I've experienced before watching movies (e.g. Spirited Away, Mad Max: Fury Road), TV shows (e.g. Dark, The Wire), reading books (e.g Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Frank Herbert's Dune), listening to music (e.g Johnny Cash's Hurt, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit) and even looking at a painting (e.g. Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Delights, Pablo Picasso's Guernica). But never ever with a game... Until I played The Last of Us Part II. For the first time I left the game feeling I just experienced something that was bigger than me.

The game-play, graphics, and all that jazz is obviously great. That it's a work of love is clearly evident in its focus on detail. But that's not the source of my experience.

The source of my experience is in the story. So beautifully tragic, so sad, so bittersweet. I don't think a shooter game has ever been so explicit and clear on the consequences of violence. The game goes to pains to make it clear that the people you're killing, even the ones robbed of their humanity through an infection, have a story. They were people with family and friends. They had aspirations and dreams and also yearned for life. And all of that has been wastefully lost. Even those surviving are losing. Violence begets more violence. Revenge breeds more revenge. The consequences are laid bare. All the potential for peace, happiness, greatness is thoroughly lost.

I can fully understand where a lot of the negativity for this game is coming from. This is a game not aimed for those looking for some easy escapism, which is something we all need in these days. This is a game that makes a lot of demands from those who play it. When the first Last of Us came out, the world was a different place. The first game was good for escapism and it garnered a lot of love from people who at the time got that escapism from it. I'm guessing a lot of these people were hoping for some mindless fun (a crucial thing in these days) and when they didn't get that from their beloved game, they were understandably disappointed and even angry. I just hope that one day all those giving this game such negative reviews consider stepping away and come back and revisit it with no expectations. That they'll take the game for what it is: A very violent game that ends up being against violence and makes you feel like you experienced something bigger than yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I finished Last of Us Part 2 and I can't sleep. Like so many others I have too many thoughts and emotions in my head swirling right now and I think I understand the outrage and need to get my thoughts down. This is going to be long but I will avoid spoilers. To summarize: play this game at your own risk after playing the first one which can be traumatizing in its own right.

So lets start by setting aside the bigoted alt right movement who are attacking this game for similar reasons as Captain Marvel (yes LGBTQ characters make out and have sex in the game get over it).

Next point is that the original Last of Us came at a time when multi-player games and apocalyptic stories flooded the market. It changed how stories can be told in not just video games but movies. One could argue that several beloved movies such as Logan, Quiet Place, John Wick, Bird Box and many others wouldn't exist without it's inspiration. Same could be said for critically acclaimed story games like the new God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Uncharted 4, and even Spiderman PS4.

So obviously this franchise resonates with people and while people are criticizing the story for not having a point they are also criticizing it for having a political agenda. Neither are true. The directors and creators of this game said four years ago that making people uncomfortable was going to be the point of this game. They knew what they were doing. They knew people would be triggered. I think a lot of people are mad that they are feeling all these mixed emotions but they don't understand the deep psychological reasons why or dont have the self awareness to process these emotions due to the avoidance tendency modern society has created due to political, religious, and mental health issues as it makes them uncomfortable. On top of that the timing of this game is impeccable. Right during a pandemic where humanity and society is splitting itself apart.

This game is not positive vibes. This game is not the same type of fun like Naughty Dogs other franchise Uncharted. There is no winning in this game. One could argue it is not a game because of these traits. I'd agree. It's an experience. This game made me have a panic attack. It caused me extreme anxiety. Great, both me and the character have PTSD. This game was visually the most beautiful game I've ever played but also the most horrifc game I've ever seen. No it's not fun to have to shove a knife through a dogs throat because its about to tear your throat open and hear it whimper as it bleeds out. How the hell did I kill 10 people with 2 bullets and a empty beer bottle? Ah **** that guys name was Jimmy? Sorry I guess. I cant hear a clicking sound or a whistle right now without having my heart skip a beat. I am numb. I am hurt.
Traveling through Wyoming, Seattle, Santa Barbra, and more is breathtaking. What would I sacrifice for love? What would you sacrifice to survive? God I love dinosaurs. Can I play Hotel California on the guitar? Holy **** I can.

Right and wrong is all about perspective. Think for yourself. There is no such thing as good and evil. Humanity is horrible. This game may not be a 10/10 like the original. But I'd still give it an 9/10. Sometimes there is no meaning in death, sometimes it is unavoidable. Yes this game is painful.

Yes this game can be traumatizing but it's also beautiful. The longer time goes on I think the more people will appreciate this game. It is unforgettable. Things don't always go the way you want. Sometimes being a better person is not in your own self interest. At some point enough pain will break you. Sometimes the person you love is in the wrong and the person you hate is just reminding you of the person in the mirror.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Buzzwords and phrases used by critics to describe this game calling it a once in a generation game and a console defining game made me nervous that hype had affected critical evaluation of the game. The negative user reviews concerned me greatly so I actually went into the game worried that it would let me down. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This game makes incredibly bold risks and changes our attitudes towards beloved characters from the first game. Never have I seen a game manage to create such multi dimensional characters whilst also drawing out some of the best motion capture and voice acting of any game i have played. Many user complaints i have seen emphasised Joe;'s death, Ellies behaviour throughout the game and the section played as Abbie. Firstly Joel's death hurt but it sets up the narrative arch and philosophical themes throughout the game. The game deals heavily with the emotional burden hatred and lust for revenge bares on a person so by killing off the most beloved character you ignite the hatred for Abbie within the player almost immediately. The only annoyance i can empathise with is people complaining that the marketing lead people to believe Joel had more of a presence in the game. But then again whilst he does not go on this games journey with you his presence is so important through flashbacks that contextualise and develop these characters past the first game. These flashbacks were some of the most emotively potent sections of the game for me and i truly loved playing them.
Secondly, like many others I was incredibly annoyed to play as Abbie when the game resets to Seattle day 1. However as I played her section I couldn't help but empathise with her as she slowly rekindled the humanity she lost after the killing of Joel. Lev, Yara and Abbie quickly became my favourite charters in the game. I cannot stress enough how much i came to love the Characters in Abbies story specifically the sequence in the Seraphites home island. Not only was this my favourite part of the game to play with the chaos and burning huts looking like something out of a medieval epic. But also this feud between the Seraphites and the WLF that has been bubbling in the background of the narrative referenced through NPC conversations, notes and some cutscenes, comes to a head. This happens just when the pacing seemed to lag and was a primal depiction of the brutality humans are capable of inflicting.
Ellie's behaviour as a complaint i simply cannot understand. How many characters have we seen be driven to do horrible things as a result of happenings during the apocalypse. Why should Ellie be any different. The all consuming hatred is captured perfectly in pivotal scenes with excellent motion capture and voice acting and Ellie's pursuit of revenge is one of my favourites in video game history. Did it lower my estimations of her, yes. Was it unrealistic, no. Ellie is complex as humans are and the murder of the only consistent figure in her life drives her to near insanity. By the end of the story my perspective shifted and i wanted nothing more than for Abbie to get away with Lev. Why does there have to be a black and white separation of morality in video games? Can't morality be examined as a more complex and subjective element to storytelling in video games? There have never been more complex characters in a video game ever.
Finally the ending is so bittersweet and heart wrenchingly sad that I cannot believe how pitch perfect it is. The final flashback to Joel had me in near tears and perfectly wrapped up Ellie and Joels relationship up whilst also serving fans closure. I wished Ellie could have sat with Joel on that porch forever. From seeing the depravement of Abbies would be grave at the end to the painful to watch final fight between Abbie and Ellie. The ending is long and masterful and finishes with a few subtle but unfathomably powerful moments. Ellie's lost finger making her unable to play the guitar properly, the Moth symbol on Joel's guitar and Ellies arm and the desolation of the happy family home. All sad and happy, good and bad but ultimately amazing.
Music is amazing, graphics are amazing, and the gameplay was very good. Refined from the first game but not enough to warrant a 10. Also Tommy was the weakest character in the game for me and served little purpose other than to set the final chapter in motion. A narrative tactic rather than a three dimensional character. I have no time for people getting annoyed at the games diverse casting of race, gender and sexuality. When the story is as strong as it is these elements don't affect the game at all.
All in all, this truly is a once in a generation game.

Wow, how is this not a slam dunk 10/10. This story is deeeeeeep. If you knock of points for it being clunky, I can get that. But the story... I mean, damn. A revenge tell for the ages.

It's a shame the game was reviewbombed before people even played it, but it's really great, a worthy second part for one of the best videogame stories. Naughty Dog is still the best in one on one character interactions and it shows again here.

I didn't like the plot, and how Ellie turned to be. Very mediocre story. Shame and I thought it will be a good game...

Ignore the hate...few questionable decisions with the story but a brilliant game overall. Is a 9/10 but putting a 10/10 to try and balance out all the retards putting 0.

This is a great game, undeservedly flooded with dirt, if you suddenly do not want to take this game because of a rotten review, then know that you are making a huge mistake P.S. I apologize for my English, I do not live in the USA or in England

Avoid spoilers and all the hate. Some fans from the first game simply cannot understand how to add emotion to a video game sequel. I am a straight male and didn't care that most main characters were female. You'd be missing out if this bothers you.

Here is my spoiler-free review: (Overall) If you enjoy a suspenseful dark story and intense brutal gameplay, then this will be amazing

(Overall) If you enjoy a suspenseful dark story and intense brutal gameplay, then this will be amazing for you. I loved everything about it. I can say for sure that it beat the first game for me and every other game I've played. It is not as adventurous as the prequel, since the environments explored was reduced but this is not enough to decrease my rating.

(Gameplay) The gameplay is very immersive and on par with God of War intensity. The animations and attention to detail are like no other. There is lots of exploration opportunities, but not too much to get bored. Some might not like the gameplay of a particular section of the game, but it will eventually make sense.

(Story) The story is my favorite part, which might raise some eyebrows - the sheer tension and thriller makes you so involved as a player. You will definitely not agree with some events that occurs, but this is exactly why it makes it so haunting and memorable. I have never felt so invested in a story with dark and gritty characters.

Play it until the very end before you make a final judgement - it is genius.

I have been disappointed by the fact that this game's only purpose was to be inclusive, completely giving up on a story.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
