From the best animations I've seen in this generation to incredible gameplay and story, you really get why Naughty Dog is known to be the best in the bizz. The game isn't enjoyable due to bad story decisions. The gameplay and graphics are good but not mind blowing. The 0/10 and 10/10 reviews are both wrong... It's just an average game because of the butcher work they did to the story. The game is average, a 5/10 is right.

It makes players disappointed and frustrated.

If that was the best Naughty Dog could offer - they should have created a completely new story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From a PTSD standpoint it didn’t make much sense to me, the ending was bizarre. They dumbed down Joel & Tommy in order to fit the death scene they wrote, which was just odd. The story felt manipulative and forced in order to uplift abby while **** on ellie. They claim the story was about action and consequences and subsequently “revenge” yet the person who couldn’t move on after 5 years (abby) who committs the act of revenge gets uplifted in the story and ellie gets written down. It all felt very unnecessary and pointless and thats not something you should feel during a game journey, that the hours were pointless. Apparently they originally had Ellie kill Abby, which would have made the story make more sense and have a more satisfying ending, but apparently they changed that halfway through, because of Halley Gross, who seems to have butchered most of the story trying to subvert expectations rather than focus on logic, previous character behavior, and just focusing on writing a good story. Its naughty dog, so when it comes to the fidelity, gameplay, animations, cutscenes, voice acting, gunplay, accessibility its all god-tier, its just a shame the story is so bizarrely written. Not having a single hour in this game to play as Joel, with all its flashbacks, is astonishingly bad writing and disrespectful to the fan base seeing as how he’s dead now and you can’t play as him ever again unless they do a Pt. 3 with more flashbacks. I don’t care if you kill main characters, tons of movies and games I love have done that, but at least write it with some intelligence and respect for the characters rather than worrying about subverting or shocking the audience. I think the pressure to do a sequel got to them and they tried a lil too hard on this one and it sabotaged them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not a 0 or even 3/10. Nor is it a 10/10. What I found this game to be is incredibly engaging, despite a bit too much “circumstantial” storytelling. I lost my wife in Walmart, but Jesse can find Ellie in all of Seattle... :|

Let’s go ahead and address the main reason most people are upset with this game, Joel’s death. Despite aforementioned circumstantial storytelling (Abby just so happening to stumble across the man she’s set out to kill), I don’t mind how this was handled. Do I wish he was never killed? Sure, I like Joel. But his death only works because I like Joel. Many people have said that Joel is out of character here in that he trusts this woman, Abby, despite a history of mistrust. For one, I never viewed the decision to go to Abby’s hideout as implicit trust, but ultimately, they are running from a horde. It made the most sense to me to seek immediate shelter rather than possibly lead this horde to the town of Jackson. And I’ve seen many people say he should have died sacrificing himself, which feels like such a cliche way to kill off a character, and the fact that his death isn’t handled in this way makes me appreciate the risk, and yes it is a risk the devs have taken, even more.

All other storytelling aspects, are handled well, if not at a snails pace. I love the constant call backs to Joel and Ellie’s relationships through the strum of a guitar in addition to the flashbacks, those both positive and those that end in conflict. My favorite part about The Last of Us Part 2 is the subtle storytelling. Nothing is in your face and if you aren’t looking, you’ll completely miss it. As an example, when exploring Joel’s home after his death, you find an “idiots guide to space” book on his bedside table, and you do not truly learn the significance of this until several hours later. Even then, that significance is not spelled out as that book can be completely missed if you aren’t exploring every nook and cranny of this game.

Ellie’s emotional arc here makes a lot of sense in its flow. Initially, I shared in her anger and relished in the death dealt out, especially to those responsible for killing Joel. As the game went on, that anger wavered, both with myself and Ellie. It felt like there was a real cost here. I found myself hoping the ultimate meeting with Abby would be met with words rather than bloodshed. Forcing her to see Joel as the father-figure he died as rather than the monster she believed him to be.

The shift to Abby’s perspective was an actual breath of fresh air, despite the fact that I do not like her. I felt less like the devs were forcing me to like Abby, rather to just understand her motivations. To me, this is another huge risk, and I love the game for it. I find it fascinating to dive into the shoes of, arguably, the villain of this story. While not likeable, I did find her relationship with Lev pretty endearing, especially as he helps her conqueror her fear of heights. Again, great subtle storytelling here, this relationships stems directly from Abby’s reaction to not only Joel’s death but how she is perceived from that outcome by her peers.

The gameplay here is far more engaging than the first. I loved every encounter and the level design is, in my opinion, the best that Naught Dog has done for any of their games. While the game is funneling you towards the end goal, it FEELS like you can go anywhere, despite that being demonstrably untrue. I’ve seen criticism that gameplay lacks “set pieces” as they’re present in the first, such as Joel being captured by one of Bill’s traps, forcing you to protect Ellie while hanging upside down. I’d completely disagree with this sentiment. I found these types of moments to be plentiful, from multiple hoard encounters to a pretty incredible car chase, an insane Bloater fight with Ellie and Joel, and...probably my favorite, exploring the lower levels of a hospital which turns out to be Seattle’s ground zero for the outbreak.

I really like this game. It’s not perfect, but it is thrilling and an emotional punch in the gut. I did not want more of the same (Outside of gameplay) with the Last of Us Part 2. I didn’t want the formula for the first game to be replicated here, because that is always what we get with video game sequels. In the end, I found the story to be both thrilling and heartbreaking with incredibly complex characters at its center.

Look back to narrative, as you can see from the reviews, this is definitely not a game for everyone. In fact I won't recommend it, not everyone has what it takes to appreciate this game: a strong and sympathetic heart. The story is dark and distressing indeed, and triggers quite a lot of negative emotions along the journey. But it also presents the most complicated, touching and beautiful relationship I've ever seen in a video game, and provides the most intense and unique experience.
So all in all, I think TLOU2 is a masterpiece. I understand why so many people dislike/hate this game, but for those who can accept the plot for what it is and embrace it, this is definitely a must-play.

    Pro:
The game itself looks nice, really nice
The voice acting is good, and the facial works are also pretty good.
Menu and settings are petty nice, is very much need with the difficult setting

    Cons:
AI is damn awful, to the point, there are games from 2012 would be superior.
The Story is really weak compared to the first game and other AAA, it feels like the story group forgot about storytelling and a lot of plotholes.
Controls are still pretty bad, the jump button is 95% useless, and was far to hyped up.
    Puzzles are not there really.
    Awkward sex screen
The biggest problem I have is centered on the character Abby, not the fact that she kills Joel, but that could have been done better, but more you have to play as her. and that Ellie saves her "twice" To were most people would have killed her. It feels soulless, and Really wished I had refunded the game back when the leaks came out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m here to contribute to the positive change in consensus that this game rightfully deserves.

The Last Of Us Part II is an absolutely stellar game that has unfortunately been directly impacted upon release by the horrible people who leaked the spoilers months ago. People saw those, decided how they wanted to feel about it completely out of context, and suddenly it was cool to hate the game. Suddenly it was cool to label it as agenda pushing, political or whatever. It’s not. It just happens to be about real people who (shocker) arent always straight white dudes. The funniest thing is that people are still labeling Abby as trans . It wouldn’t matter if she was, but she isn’t. So by default, tons of people’s opinions aren’t valid.

I thought this game was an improvement upon the original in each and every way. It even rectified my one and only complaint in the first game, which was the super clunky melee combat that resorted to mashing square and punching enemies in the face over and over with the same animation. Adding the dodge mechanic went a long way in the sequel.

Seattle is the most well realized real world city that I’ve ever seen in a game. As someone who grew up in the area I had an absolute blast exploring every nook and cranny.

The story is utterly compelling from start to finish. I was literally on the edge of my seat with completely undivided attention during every cutscene. I desperately wanted to keep coming back to the game because I just wanted to know what happened next. It’s an added bonus then, that the gameplay is so damn good.

This is the smartest enemy AI I’ve ever encountered. It truly felt like I was hiding from real people at times. The moment I knew this was on another level was during the first encounter with Wolves. I ran into a classroom after being seen and ducked behind a desk, to which an enemy called out “she’s by the desk!”, to which I audibly said “what the ****

I admired the choice of having Joel’s death be the catalyst for the story. I was disgusted and appalled by it, and immediately understood why they did it. I now shared the same anger as Ellie. Ellie, who had just seen her “father” get viscerally murdered. And me, who had just seen the protagonist I just spent 14 hours connecting with getting murdered. That was powerful. Now the player shares the motivation completely with Ellie and is like “yep, let’s go kick the **** out of this woman.” And what an utter, shocking surprise it was later when Naughty Dog managed to make me love Abby.

There are two sides to every story. Everybody is the villain in somebody else’s story. It’s such a shame that people saw Abby do what she did and then never chose to forgive her, never gave her a chance or even tried to see from her perspective. That’s so strange to me that people were so stubborn that they went through her half of the game and had their opinion completely unchanged. That means that YOU can’t forgive people. That means you might have a problem with putting yourself in other people’s shoes. I hope you can play this game again and maybe think about what that says about yourself.

I’m still mulling over my experience with this game because I just finished it a few days ago. But for me I’d add it to my short list of what I consider perfect games, the other two being Uncharted 4 and Bioshock. Uncharted 4 is probably still my favorite Naughty Dog game, but I’m biased to that series I think cause it just means a whole lot to me.

I will add that yes, the game is ridiculously dark, but I actually walked away from it a lot more hopeful than I thought it would be. It actually ended on a somewhat positive note for both Abby and Ellie. Yes, Ellie lost her family, but she’s become a better person, she’s moving on from Joel and she’s off (I think) to go reconcile with Dina. I interpret this way: Ellie realized that if she was able to forgive Joel, then maybe Dina could forgive her. And I think she will, cause Dina rules.

I went on for a long while and I hope I wasn’t too harsh on the people who didn’t like it. If you played it and didn’t like it that’s perfectly fine. The people who don’t play it and shout around saying the game sucks need to be silenced though. (Not killed. Don’t kill them. Just, be louder than them about the true nature of this game. Because it’s incredible.)

We played around 7 hours, and became absolutely bored of searching for materials in every nook and cranny just to continue a story that we no longer felt invested in. This was surprising considering that he had beaten and loved The Last of Us 1, and I had beaten it twice and enjoyed it very much. This game just seemed to lack so much passion, and instead felt like yet another director falling victim to their own ego and drive to usurp viewer expectations for no identifiable reason. I am incredibly dissapointed in this misdirected series that truly should have been a one-off with no sequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start out by saying this was no where near the worst game I have ever played. In fact some parts of the game are actually really good. But for me the gameplay loops with the humans npcs and the writing in general didn't make for a fun experience. And honestly I disagree with the idea that the game is too bleak but mostly because the writing, imo, doesn't earn that emotion. I hope to say what I liked that keeps me from rating this game lower and then go a little bit into why this game just didn't gel well with me and was at times a chore to play.

I think the flashback sequences were really well done and brought back much of the feeling of the last title. And I do wish to make it clear that I came into this title as a fan of the last game, But they present a bit of an issue that will be gone over towards the end. I love the new infection types such as the stalker and the rat king and felt they were the most tense parts of the game. And I felt the end level of the game played much like ending to 28 days later where you unleashed an infected or two to thin out the guards. I love the subway are where you can pit infected against the gangs out to kill you. Moments like those worked and I loved them a lot. What doesn't work was everything else.

The flashbacks, imo, should have been the opening to the game let us get back that feeling from the last game and then you kill Joel as it would have more impact. As it was the flashbacks seemed so random and out of place. I also don't like Abby as written because she doesn't make sense compared to Ellie in that Ellie has PTSD and yet Abby doesn't? And Abby going from a one track tunnel vision person to being altruistic after the deed is done just doesn't happen in human psychology and you need only to look at studies on the aftermath of families who attend the execution of someone who killed a loved one to know that you don't just go back to normal you
after something like torture and killing people. I am sure some military Service people can back me up on that. So it takes me out of the immersion when Abby seems to walk away mostly fine but it's
Ellie who is damaged. I mean even that doctor lady who was with Abby admitted to hearing Joels screams in her sleep and yet Abby is just fine? Ellie has nightmares about Joel but Abby only ever dreams of her dad and often not in a PTSD kind of way? Does this make any sense to anyone else?
And that's really the rub. The story and plot conveniences tend to fall apart the more you think about it. Ellie's in trouble oh look Jessie just happens to be near by. Abby in the sight of the sniper Let's just have Manny show up out of no where.I could go on and on with the number of times I was taken out
of the story but I won't. When I am fighting to survive against the infected that's when I was immersed
anytime after that I felt taken out of the story and found my encounters with the human NPCs to be boring. I know others disagree and feel the infected sections were the boring part but I guess different strokes. I also felt a bit lied to as the cult that hated LGBT seems to be so little of this game
when the marketing made it seem so much bigger then it was I thought they would be who we fight
through out the game and we didn't. I don't understand the advertising choices.

Now as I finish this off notice I made no mention of politics or Abby being trans or implied to be. My own daughter is trans so this was never an issue for me. Abby isn't bad because she's implied to be trans she's bad because her character arch just doesn't make sense and it made for moments when I should be crying into moments of Meh because the writing is so disconnected with what's on screen
that it's hard to connect to those emotions that the game wants me to feel. If anything the politics
and trans and gay rights issues are just so small that it's the least of this games worries. So much
so that I don't mention them till now because they didn't really effect anything in either a good or
bad way. You could honestly take them out and lose nothing from the story. And that's why I rate this
so low. Not because of politics, not because of youtubers but because I played it and just found
the game to have some bright spots but a lot of just baffling spots that just didn't add up to an experience I had hoped to have coming off the last game in the series. And as I close this out I want
to say it's not as bad as I was lead to believe it would be, It's not great by any means but it needs so
much more work especially on the Abby character. If they could tighten that up and keep the infected then maybe a third game will make me love the series again. Till then I just can't really recommend this game.

If you have an open mind, can empathise with the different characters and realise that everyone (even unnamed NPCs) has a story in the violent, disgusting world, you can get something meaningful, thought provoking and powerful from the story.

Since finishing and reading into the outrage I really think it shows that these days it’s not worth getting involved in internet communities about very personal and opinion based media like this.

If you’ve spoiled the story already, I can understand not wanting to play, but if you haven’t yet, I encourage an open mind and really trying to think about the perspectives of each character. No one in this world is right, no one is wrong, just like the reviews for the game (other than trolls and bombers)

Anyway, I'm glad I played TLOU2. I'm not glad I bought the paltry special edition but that's my own fault for falling for an old trick.

The graphics on this game are completely top-tier for the PS4. The game really lets itself down, however, by confining you to playing in urban settings where nature has reclaimed the streets and skyscrapers. This leads to a homogenous environment that makes up a good 50% of the game. You wander around streets and derelict buildings that are difficult to differentiate. However, when you do get to the vibrant visual settings they really are breath-taking. I just wish they weren't so limited and confined to mostly flashbacks.

The gameplay will likely be the second-most divisive aspect of the game. When you examine the formula it's quite one-dimensional and familiar; enter area, eliminate enemies, scavenge for goods and find a way forward.

A major aspect that got in my way was that despite being a linear game, I found myself lost or lacking direction at quite a few points in the game. There is a small open-world area near the start of the game that you traverse on horseback, and this area in particular had me scratching my head a few times. There was a map available but you had to retrieve it from your inventory every time you needed it, making it cumbersome. This was likely to keep the HUD clear to improve immersion, but I'd have preferred a mini-map in the corner of the screen like many games do. There are many areas that look like you can explore them, only to be met with vehicles etc. blocking the way which could easily be climbed over in real life but not in the game for some reason.

I found myself getting frustrated at times with the camera being rigid and my character not moving how I wanted to even with the correct buttons pressed. One near-maddening experience I had a few times was when my accomplice would get in my way, or come running up to me only to knock into me, sending me a few inches outside of cover to be spotted by an enemy. This wasn't frequent, but noticeable.

The story is easily the most divisive and controversial aspect of the game. A lot of this is due to subjective taste, so should be taken as such. One thing I enjoyed was the revenge theme that underpinned most of the game. Many people were not happy at old characters leaving and new characters emerging, but I appreciated the attempt at moving forward rather than saturating characters and stories from the original. There were many complaints around the sexuality and race elements of characters, and I think these complaints ironically serve to prove that such characteristics are still in receipt of abuse and discrimination in modern times and need protecting. Overall I found the story to be the best part of the game as it becomes twisted and shows that separating good guys from the bad guys isn't always easy. The story allows for more experimentation and evolution than the actual gameplay, so I give praise for this.

I do have one major gripe with the story and that's how it is delivered. The game jumps backwards and forwards in time, with flashbacks happening within flashbacks. This makes the story feel a bit all over the place and not paced as well as it could. It seems like some of it was made up as they went along and shoehorned in wherever it could fit.

Let's synthesise this into a conclusion. This game was always going to upset many people and reviews were going to be plagued with bias and extremes. The gameplay struggles to move forward but the game itself is a step forward for the games industry, although not when Crunch and systematic abuse is involved during development.

Really, the game is a few hours too long, and truncating it could have resolved the issues with homogenous and tedium found in the environment.

Don't go into the game with massive expectations or demands. Just go with the flow and allow the game to take you on a journey which the first one did, which is a big part of why I believe it was so successful.

Not bashing on the cast of characters or the message of the game, nor do I agree with the hate this game received pre-launch, but the narrative just isn’t up to Naughty Dog standard. For a start, the number of flashbacks slows the game massively, at one point there’s a flashback in a flashback! Gone are the nuanced performances of the first game, watching interplay between Joel and Ellie evolve. This story is much more focused on love triangles, pregnancies, and soap opera fare. No wonderfully touching uplifting storytelling, watching a growing paternal love save a broken man, no narrative beats to echo the beautiful giraffe scene from the first game. It’s grim, grimy, and thoroughly predictable, with character storylines sounding like something from 90210 or the OC, though maybe a tad more depressing.

The basic premise is that violence begets violence, and we should have stopped long before the events of the end game. I wish I had heeded their advice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like many others, I have been waiting for this game for many years and now, the long-awaited release took place. I bought the game and for a couple of weeks I was immersed in it. I have never seen such intensity of drama in any other game. Emotions are torn over the place, the game makes you suffer and experience everything that happens in it. At the end, I felt depression, sadness and hopelessness ... It's just amazing! I’m so tired of all these "super heroes", "happy ends" and boring stories! I have got many thoughts after passing… many questions for my own life ... When the credits began, I just got up, went to my daughter, hugged her and sat like that for some time ...
I absolutely cannot understand all this crazy hatred around the game. Indeed, there is a lot of unnecessary feminism, many LGBT feature stories. Why is “transgender” needed here? Why all the main and strong characters (except Joel) are women? In the WLF camp you can hear a conversation of random people about the love of two guys (this moment can be easily miss), what is it for? Many of these things just made it difficult for me to empathize with some of the characters. I am not against LGBT, but sometimes there is too much of it! Why couldn't it be done like in the first part of the game? There were strong men and women; it was harmoniously incorporated into the game's plot. I believed in role-playing of Bill, Tess, Marlene! But Lev's motivation eluded me... Either he is a girl, but wants to be a boy, or he / she is fighting against the patriarchy in the village, or he / she simply did not want to marry this man??? What should I empathize with here? Why is this? To please someone or try to take advantage of current “LGBT-trends”? It's superfluous, but it does NOT make the game a bad! I understand Ellie's motivation, I understand Abby. I both love and hate them at the same time. I DON'T want to fight when they fight each other, neither in the theater or at the end of the game! They don't know each other's history, they don't know each other's feelings… I would like to shout, "STOP!". But the game, like in the life, continues its story in cold blood. Where has it been in video games? NOWHERE!
I would give the game a "9" due to the overabundance of LGBT stories, but the game deserves a better rating (which was greatly spoiled by those who put a "0" (perhaps they not even played the game)). The game is EXCELLENT!

The Last of Us Part II is a story about hate and people driven and destroyed bt it, so it amazes me how the message of the game transcends into a real life and a fuzz people make around this game. But in real life we don't even need a zombie apocalipse to show our worst.
It's a sign of a real emotional immaturity to cry about a story decision in a video game.
Please note, that nearly all of the negative reviews were posted on June 19th, as soon as Metacritic opened user reviews section for TLOU2. These people didn't play a game, they came just do spread hate.

In my humble opinion, it's the best, the most dark and brutal story in video games so far. It's direct and ugly to the bone. it doesn't screw around and provides something very unique in game industry. There is nothing like it. It doesn't play around with movie tropes. It hits you in a face with unexpected, brutal events. It's the most violent game, because of very dark, realistic presentation.
Story, locations, characters are amazing in this game.

The combat part of a gameplay is superb. At first glance, it's a mild evolution on concepts introduced in the first part of the franchise. If you played previous Naughty Dog games, you will feel like home. The best thing about the gameplay, is that there are no clear borders between stealth, meele combat, shooting and running and hiding. It's all combined into a unique 'survival experience', that will makes you tense and nervous like no other game. In other stealth games, usually when I'm discovered by enemy I restart encounter. But mechanics of TLOU2 are so good, so elegantly combined, that I nearly enjoy being disovered and fighting for my life. It really looks like in this E3 trailer, where you assasinate few guys from stealth, than you are discovered, you run, you hide under a car etc.

No need to speak about graphics and sound, as it speak for itself.

Game has a few problems though:
    - it's too streched. I'd like it to be more story focused. Instead game too often prolongs the story with very long explorations, journes, retrospections etc. Often I was annoyed when I wanted to know how the story events will unravel, but game fed me with fillers
    - LGBT is really strong in this one. Way stronger than I initially though. It's not just that Ellie is a lesbian (which I think is great, it suits her character). There's much more of that stuff and bards will sing songs about butthurt of gamers for the years to come. It doesn't bother me, just like sexism in video games doesn't bother me much. It's just a game, lets take a chill pill, be more tolerant to other people's beliefes. Neil did the game he wanted to do and I respect that.
    - too much of licking the walls. I understand looking for resources is important part of a game, but I expect better from Naughty Dog 2020
    - too much of 'this door is locked, lets look for a different way in' kind of crap. I hope I wouldn't experience this in Naughty Dog 2020 game

    I highly recommend it.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly:

    * The Good: The visuals of this game are breathtaking. The animations are mostly great. And while the core of gameplay is the same as the first game, there are noticeable improvements.

    * The Bad: This game ignores the fact that most people interested in it are 'the fans of the first game'. The pacing of the story is what I would only describe as 'weird on mushrooms'. And some major characters and their personalities are retconned in a big way.

    * The Ugly: The story is very clearly doctored to force-feed certain ideologies and beliefs and stereotypes which are different from the first game. Thing is, pushing ideas through the gaming medium happens all the time, but it is insulting when established characters of the prequel have to morph so they can fit the new narrative.

    Summary:
The visuals and the technical merits of the game make it really hard to score it below 5 out 10. But the story and pacing of it deeply wound the experience.
As a good friend of mine said, "I'd rate the story of this game, 2 lost fingers out of 10."
Also, as a side note, Naughty Dog games used to be on my list of 'buy without any questions'. After this game, they no longer are.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. *if it weren’t for the average score of 3.9, I’d give this game an 8 but I’ve chosen to change that to a 10 to help boost the rating more.

The Last of Us Part ii delivered a great gaming experience for me. Despite some very controversial plot points, I overall enjoyed playing this game. It took me a couple days to complete with a playtime of around 26 hours so I doubt a lot of the users giving this game negative reviews have even played through the game fully as they were only posted on the release day.

    Story: 6/10

One of the weaker parts of this game. I questioned a lot of major plot decisions such as how the ending was left and killing off Joel. Joel’s death felt too rushed and insignificant for such an important character. It was sudden with not much buildup, and his death felt somewhat pathetic for such a strong character. It didn’t feel plausible, as I doubt Joel would usually trust strangers so easily. I felt this scene could’ve been handled a lot better.

The decision to let Abby live at the end left me feeling rather unsatisfied. For Ellie to go through all the effort of hunting her down and killing lots of people on her journey for her to NOT kill the very person who murdered Joel came off as strange. The message of revenge not being the answer is good but.. just not in this case.

My favourite aspects of the storytelling were by far the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. These were handled very well and had me smiling all the way through. The bond between the two was shown perfectly. The pacing of the game was very nice (apart from Joel’s death feeling rushed) and left us with some beautiful moments like the first game did. A favourite of mine was Ellie playing the guitar to Dina.

    Gameplay: 9/10

The gameplay was practically the exact same as the games predecessor, except with a few added mechanics. This isn’t really a complaint as I thoroughly enjoyed the first game’s gameplay.

Loved the AI, as it felt like I was fighting against real people. Their walk cycles weren’t as predictable and the fact that they each had names and reacted to the deaths of their comrades and pet dogs was a nice touch. This almost had me feeling bad for them.

Started off easy but started to incorporate harder battles about half way through.

    Graphics and Design: 9/10

The graphics were stunning, as expected from Naughty Dog. Some scenes almost looked photorealistic. The lighting was especially great, setting a variety of moods for each scene.

Areas felt somewhat linear, but this doesn’t bother me much as it’s a game focused on story over exploration. Each area was designed very well and I loved the small details inside the houses.

    Sound design and Music: 10/10

The best part of the game. The music was beyond beautiful, capturing the feelings of each scene perfectly.

Sound effects were also amazing and very immersive. Not much else to say here as it’s just perfect and I have no complaints.

    Characters: 7/10

Contrary to popular opinion I love most of the characters. Ellie and Joel will always remain my favourites but Dina and Jesse were a nice addition to the game and I liked seeing them on scene and seeing them interact with Ellie.

Only thing that brings down this score is Abby. She’s a god awful character who even though I’m supposed to have empathy for, all I feel is rage towards her. Having to play as her was unbearable as I hold so much hate for this character. She wasn’t likeable at all.

    Replayability: 7/10

Gameplay was fun and I love playing as Ellie, but having to see Joel die again, playing as Abby and knowing how the game will end sort of ruins the experience a little. Give it time and perhaps I’ll play it again on a harder game mode. It’s worth playing again just for that one flashback at the dinosaur park to be honest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is pure art. I don’t necessarily need to be happy with the events that happen in a game, movie or series. I was incredibly moved by the story, and have never been more invested in a game. And because of how much i care about this game, I will try to justify the two big events of the story that alot of people have a problem with. This is a story about hate and loss, and I think the choices Naughty Dog took with Joel’s death and letting Abby go, was necessary for the story. The death of Joel put Ellie on a revenge mission, and will kill anything that gets in her way. I think that is completely understandable, and shows her incredible loss. She goes on a journey of hate, and only cares about getting to Abby, and therefore not showing any emotion other than hate towards her fellow Wolves. Abby lets Ellie live when they met at the theatre, and therefore shows that she is willing to let go of her hate in order to stop the killing. Also getting to play as Abby, seeing her humanity, and symathizing with her, is a fantastic part of the game. After that, Ellie and Dina lives quite happily on the farm with JJ, but Ellie still has severe problems with Joel’s death, and has a firm belief that killing Abby will make it stop. Dina knows the loss of what a journey of blind hate can make you lose, woth Jesse getting killed. She understands that it is not worth it, and has perspective on what is important. Ellie has not yet realized that fully. She finds Abby on the pole, and is kind of paralyzed when seeing her so weak. When getting memories of Joel, she is enraged and wants to fight, and has the opportunity to kill Abby. When getting another image of Joel, she stops. I think this is because she realizes how much she has lost, with Joel, Jesse, Dina and JJ because of this pure hate. There is simply no point anymore, she figures out that it wont resolve anything. It will only create more suffering. It is sad that alot of people had to die by her hand before she realized, but i dont think it makes the story or the game bad. My perception is that Ellie was clouded by hate for very long, and with time and distance, she subconsiously left that hate behind her, and when she finally had the chance, her hate was gone. I don’t feel good or fulfilled by the ending, but it makes sense. This game moved me and made me think, that is what i think great art is about. Expand

This is yet another experience I hesitate to call a game. The craftsmanship and polish is unlike anything I've ever seen before.

I don't think I've ever been more affected by a video game emotionally in my life and I don't think I will for quite some time. Everything about this experience was mature and adult and so very raw. The characters are more genuine than ANY other zombie style form of media and the direction from Neil Druckman is absolutely masterclass.

Ellie's character developed between games exactly as you would expect growing up in that world and her actions became increasingly deplorable. You see why she is so filled with hate at the lack of real closure and the survivors remorse she feels knowing her life will never be worth more than what was stolen from her in the original entry.

When Istarted the game I thought some of the criticisms and negativity I'd heard must have some credence and earnestness to them but the more i played the better I understood the types of people that give this game a low score are unfortunately lacking emotional intelligence. Something I've seen becoming more and more prevalent, and it's devastatingly disheartening.

People so often lack the mental acumen to be able to discern a dark and harrowing tale from a "BaD StOrY" and it shows. I've read so many 0 or 2 star reviews saying things are just thrown together or make no sense and I just have to shake my head in sorrow at how far these people missed the mark. It's not a case for opinions, it's that this is such a mature, evocative tale that so many people (still a minority, however vocal) simply lack the ability to appreciate...

I could spend an afternoon detailing everything this game does right, but these things must be experienced for yourself and it was far more important for me to volcalise my thoughts on the negativity this game received and quantify exactly why.

    TLDR-
Simply put, you wouldn't expect everyone to be able to provide a worthwhile opinion on stem cell research, so you shouldn't expect everyone to be able to provide a worthwhile opinion on an experience that does so much over it's lengthy journey.

It was a very different game than the first and I'm happy the developers made the game they wanted to make, instead of regurgitating another TLOU1 that would be safe and easy to appease all the toxic little boys who keep trashing the game. I found it to be a superior game in every way. TLOU1 is great, if a bit generic. Things, overall, turned out how you wanted them to. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn’t enjoy the game at all. It completely burned the original, but i find it beautiful in a way. It was heart aching and shoved the idea that revenge is bad. But the reason why I give it a ten is how effective the game is to display the tragedy of Ellie. The game takes a character you love so much and destroy it, illustrating the flaws everyone has. I know many people may argue against me but if found this meaning in the game. This game is not like the first one, rather it pushes the boundaries of games becoming art. The developers don’t want you to have fun. Therefore, they strip every character that Ellie cares about and allow their deaths to be so pointless that her fight for revenge becomes pointless in itself. Joel died in such a stupid way because it is a parallel to Ellie’s need to die in a meaningful way as it would allow her life to have meaning. Hence when Joel stripped her ability to save humanity in the first game, Ellie lost her relationship with Joel because of that. Hence when Joel dies such a stupid and pointless death, Ellie fights for revenge for some catharsis. Her nightmares forcing her to kill Abby and then in the final climax she realising killing Abby won’t do anything, but rather her inability to forgive Joel for saving her and always trying to help her is why she is always tormented by Joel’s death. Thus realising that life doesn’t have to have any meaning and people die meaningless or pointless deaths. It’s an acceptance of living a life with satisfaction and around the people who care about you. It’s a growth in maturity for Ellie. It’s a brilliant tragedy of an acceptance of a harsh reality. The entire fight to Seattle and then Santa Barbara is so tiring and pointless to play because there is no meaning at all to have such a fight. That’s exactly what the developers want you to feel, that annoyance. It isn’t an enjoyable game like the first one, but that’s what drives the narrative and expressive intent by the creators. That’s why in the final scene inside of Ellie all along it’s the regret to not apologise Joel thy gives her the reason to her torment. Games can be art... Expand

The Last of Us Part 2 is perhaps the most quality high-budget title out now (as of June 2020) that falls under these kinds of games. The game is fun, very brutal, exciting, and thoroughly immersive. It leaves the player wanting more high quality violent games with the same grounded take (Spec Ops: The Line is another example). The story provides an in-depth look at what vengeance can do to individuals and how it affects and impacts human judgment, and the consequences of such judgment. Very few games (let alone high-budget intellectual properties) explore the topic of utter hatred and the emotional toll it can take on an individual.

What prevents a perfect score for this game is the uncalled-for obvious push for mushy scenes, PDA, and developer's obvious hints at representation and if you put that together with the developer's (Neil Druckmann) self-admitted agenda push, today's digital mob mentality, and outrage culture, and how toxic social media is; this obvious spotlight inclusion, as opposed to the representation being treated as just a by-product of the title, here in this game it got in the way of the immersion plenty of times while playing. Maybe this game was meant for the social media activist crowd? I don't know. People today should know that video games are now mainstream and that consumers are becoming more selective in their buying choices. If people are selective and know their style regarding fashion, movies, music and now today even video games, then game developers should be aware of that too by now. Be realistic of who your core consumer demographic is, creators. Male, 24 yrs and hetero here, and fortunately I was able to look past the obvious pandering in this game to objectively conclude that The Last of Us Part 2 is indeed a good game. I do remain hopeful for a multiplayer component.

*Edit (06/28/2020): Replaying and rewatching this game. The Last of Us Part 2 is indeed one of the best games I have ever played. Regarding my complaint about representation --playing this game, I actually changed my mind it actually is just a by-product; it really doesn't harm the overall takeaway. I was blindsided by the outrage leading up to this. I realize that even though still this game's hate hasn't really died down yet, I feel obligated to say that this game will still nevertheless garner more of an appreciation with time. Its still a level of fun-violence and sophisticated quality I can only compare to Red Dead Redemption 2 as of now. Story-wise this game is one insightful character-study. Lots of symbolism, nuance and motivational analysis of the characters that the ending and trying to understand why the characters do what they do is the reason why I can't get this game out of my head. I'm actually stunned how captivating this game is. I was someone who disliked the ending to the first game, and satisfyingly, knowing what I know, the ending to Part 2 felt very poetic. This is Ellie's story, and perhaps the true individual she was trying to get even with and put to rest in her head once and for all really isn't who it seems to Ellie and the player of this game at initial glance. No spoilers here, but the quote "I don't think I can ever forgive you for that. But I would like to try." is the very thing that brings the whole entire game to full circle. This game is deserving of its critical acclaim.

Why in such a serious and adult story about survival and human values demonstrate the agenda of tolerance - I don’t understand.
