This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not one for writing online reviews, and I wish I didn't feel compelled to join the negative reviewers when it comes to this game, but I do.

I am not butt-hurt about things many others seem upset about. My masculinity and sexuality aren't threatened by Ellie or her relationship with Dina. I'm not going to complain about the fact Joel died the way he did. The people whining about him going out that way have largely missed the point of the world set up in the first game. It isn't a world where being a bad-ass or a hero will guarantee you the kind of death everyone else would approve of. It's the kind of world where bad luck and making a wrong turn or letting your guard down at the wrong time, even for a few seconds, can cost you your life, so his death was as fitting as any other because those are the kinds of deaths this world hands out.

What bothers me about the game, and why it's getting such a low score from me, is that Naughty Dog lied to everyone about what it was. I didn't get the game they convinced me to buy in advance. I got half of that game, and half of a different game about someone I don't care for and spent the first half of the game actively wanting to kill.

I understand what Neil Druckmann is trying to do. It is presumptuous, arrogant, ham-handed, and disrespectful.

I could explain why at great length, but my main problem remains that this is not the game I was led by the marketing campaign to believe I was buying.

What Naughty Dog did here was a bit like marketing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to everyone, as a story continuing the saga of the protagonists of Harry Potter, told from the point of view of Harry Potter, and then reaching the halfway point in the book and starting over with the chapter title "Owl Post" a second time, with the opening sentences of the chapter being:

"Amanda Trakeskeal-- the strangely mannish daughter of the guy standing second to the left behind The Dark Lord the last time he was seen alive-- lay on her bed, contemplating revenge on Rubeus Hagrid, who had trampled her father to death on his way out of the ruins of the Potter house, cradling young Harry in his arms. Amanda spared a moment to wonder why so many people said her face looked 'punchable,' before steering her thoughts back to...."

You know, Ms. Rowling, that's okay. You don't need to bother trying to tell me the rest of that story. I have no interest in Amanda Trakeskeal as a person, because I didn't buy the book "Harry Potter & Amanda Trakeskeal & the Prisoner of Azkaban as Told From Two Different Points of View Because We Got Confused About the Fact This Isn't Star Wars and None of the People Reading This Give a Crap About the Idea a Great Many Truths This Narrative Clings to Depend Greatly on the Protagonist's Point of View."

Same thing here. Naughty Dog is not going to teach me some high-minded lesson about the futility of revenge and holding grudges by making me play the game from the point of view of both Ellie and Abby for a couple of reasons, chief among them being that I did not buy a game about the strangely mannish daughter of the guy who was standing second to the left behind the Dark Lord the last night he was seen alive, so I have no interest in the story from her point of view.

Abby exists to give the protagonists whose story I'm interested in something to struggle against and overcome. She isn't a real person; she's a narrative device. Forgetting her point in the narrative ruins the narrative.

Even Stephenie Meyer was able to figure out most people weren't going to care about the story from the point of view of someone who was only related to a minor secondary character on the antagonists' side, and made that a separate thing so the fans who might be interested could read it, and the fans who were reading the main story didn't have to slog through a bunch of garbage they'd find irritatingly irrelevant to the experience they were buying into, which is exactly how Naughty Dog should have handled Abby's campaign. They should have included it as a second campaign or DLC you could play in addition to Ellie's so it didn't interfere with your ability to complete the story-line you bought the game to play through.

And the shame of it is, they sacrificed being able to develop their new protagonists to the point they could be characters we cared about in order to half-ass trying to make us care about the other side, and it cost them the opportunity to give us an interesting new cast of characters and plot that would ultimately justify Joel's death as its inciting event.

Going half-in on developing twice the number of characters and half-in on developing two opposing plots doesn't add up to the same thing giving 100% to developing a single cast and story-line does.

    It just leaves everything wanting.

I'm going to start this out by saying that the only reason this game got a rating of 4, is because I genuinely had some fun experiences getting immersed in the world and going back 7 years in time for $60 and playing a game I could pop in my ps3 and just ignore the graphical changes and identical combat system, no seriously, go back and play the first game, identical! It's like they spent 7 years beating the script with a rock and some tumblr quotes for character development. It's Joel and Ellie. That's the story, how hard was it to stick to that? I can promise you 90% of the people who came to play, got to the Abby portion and realized once they found a collectible that she was going to take up way more time than anyone wanted. I speedrunned Abby, Lev had a great story, but would've been more heartfelt if she weren't with the shehulk plot killer. 4/10 would refund if I could. Expand

The game in its gameplay and the entire technical system is 10, in its history I loved it, not being afraid to kill its protagonist, putting yourself in the place of the "villain" and knowing his motives and life, for some moments I came to empathize with Abby, but always keeping in mind that she was Joel's murderer, it shows us that not because we love someone is she necessarily good, we love Joel and Ellie a lot, but being objective, they are bad people, Joel above all, demonstrating her selfishness above all and not respecting Ellie's decision, moved me a lot and made me feel very human Expand

The gameplay was pretty much the same as last of us with nothing really fresh and exciting. Then there is the story... playing as a character who kills your favorite character turns the game sour. I found myself hating every moment playing as Ally. Hurting and even killing characters you care about ruins the game. It makes the gameplay terrible. It makes you not want to continue the game. I found myself thinking it would get better but it never did. The game ends and I already feel that I know how the last of us 3 will play out and end. It has to work out. How wrong I was. I'd like to start this by saying that in no way is any of my anger or disappointment at the game due to the LGBTQ themes, of course it isn't and its harmful that these days people can't criticize a game that touches on these issues without being labelled a homophobe, sexist, or transphobe.

This game is straight up below average. To begin with, the product doesn't even function as it should, I experienced two hard crashes and a game breaking bug that forced me to replay 3 hours of progress, as well as an unbelievable amount of graphical errors that forced a reload to checkpoint. That being said, at times this game is an absolute graphical powerhouse, certain locations are absolutely gorgeous and many cutscenes look absolutely top class in terms of direction and animation, though this is not always the case - some facial animations are absolute nightmare fuel and certain areas look straight up worse than the majority of locations in the original, I don't know how this is possible, when the PS4 is capable of presenting consistent visual masterpieces such as Death Stranding, and even Naughty Dog's own Uncharted 4 which looks far, far better than this game's washed out color palette and muddy, low res textures (the lighting is, however, stunning). The gameplay has barely evolved from the original, which already felt incredibly clunky all the way back in 2013. The quality of life improvements are welcome, but there's an unbelievable amount of missed opportunity when it comes to potential uses of the environment, a stealth system that could've been utilized so much better, and even the missed opportunity of multi-faction fights (infected and human enemies in the same area, while there were a few, they were much less impressive than those of the Left Behind DLC all those years ago).

Sound design and soundtrack are however a huge high point, the sounds of each and every weapon feels fantastic, and really adds to the weighty, visceral combat, while the soundtrack once again retains the masterful subtlety of the original, if only it had a half decent story to compliment.

Speaking of which, what in the everloving hell was the story? Generic revenge plot with minimal subtlety that utilizes pure shock value, dialogue that is reminiscent of a bad fan translation in the late 90s, and 0 character development throughout. Not to mention it utterly dashes any and all character development from the original. I for one, am not against the big decision made early on in the game (You know which one I'm talking about) if only it had been done well, and led to an interesting, compelling narrative. Hell, I'd even go as far as to say it was the correct decision and needed to happen. But everything that followed felt like a bad dream. Every single emotional moment ended up feeling like an absolute nothing. Endless plotholes and cheap play on emotions that makes utterly zero sense in the context of the world and events that have already happened. Each character death is almost laughable, half of the time I'd forget their names not moments after they're gone, sometimes while they're still alive right next to me (Which is a testament to how empty they feel). Take Tess, or Henry and Sam, or even Sarah from the first game for example. Not a whole lot of screentime whatsoever, yet their deaths meant something - their deaths brought tears to my eyes. In this one, every a main character who the game had tried to condition you to like through the tropiest of means mind you (They're nice to a dog, they're nice to kids - even though they advocate torture and are constantly committing war crimes, that kind of thing) Every time they would die, I could not care less and that really saddens me.

i'm coming to the end of the character limit now and while I have so much more I want to say about this mess of a game, I'll leave it here. I desperately wanted this game to hit the heights it should've, but unfortunately I will now be scrubbing this one from my memory and starting a new playthrough of the original immediately.

You're better than this Naughty Dog, also stop being such a pretentious brat on Twitter Neil Druckmann, its not a good look.

4/10 - not a terrible game, but absolutely below average, I'd rather play mass effect andromeda again than ever replay this confused kick in the dick of a game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. PART 1 - I had so much to say, I have split my review into 2 parts. The second part is posted under the username “rwdyehousee.” See part two for additional commentary on the story.

With TLOU2, Naughty Dog (ND) promised to "subvert our expectations." Truly, they succeeded; we all expected a rich story with fantastic character development, and instead we got...well, we got this pile of junk.
But first, let's begin with two positives.
1). TLOU2’s visuals are stunning. The environments are rich and immersive, dense with foliage that characterizes a world in which nature is reclaiming its agency from humanity. The sheer detail indicates the massive commitment of time, energy, and resources that went into the creation and development of each environment in this game. In this respect, the game is incredibly successful and will surely serve as a quintessence of visual development for years to come.
2). Accessibility. ND's work here truly has revolutionary potential. The game gives you sweeping discretion to change most major aspects of the game. You can customize the difficulty in many ways, for instance, making enemies more perceptive, allies stronger, and more loot available. You can have the game explicitly indicate the direction, or even simply solve environmental puzzles if you want to advance the narrative. It gives the player tremendous power to alter (or even break) the game state, which makes the game more "accessible" (as the name suggests) to some players and can facilitate a more relaxed, fun experience for others.

A quick note on gameplay. It is in many ways reminiscent of the first game, but does afford the player more options in combat. The ability to go prone, as well as craft silencers and arrows certainly gives the player more options than the first game did. The dodge but is a nice touch, but could have been implemented more effectively and remains rather clunky. Encounters do tend to drag on unnecessarily long; in some instances enemies seem to spawn endlessly. Furthermore, the gameplay exhibits a repetitiveness and lack of novelty similar to the first game which ultimately limits its potential. Especially in the course of 25-30 hours, the gameplay can become quite stale. Nevertheless, it does retain the same value its predecessor possessed and sprinkles in some minor additions without changing the core mechanics.

However, these well-designed aspects of the game are completely overshadowed by the story, the "claim to fame" of the first game, which is in no uncertain terms a total ****
First, the death. While the death of a main character can be acceptable even to the staunchest of fans if done properly, ND failed ENTIRELY in this regard. Joel's death was unceremonious, torturous, and frankly disrespectful. Not only are the events leading to his brutal murder contrived and unimaginative, but he dies early in the game merely as a narrative device, enabling ND to pursue a revenge plot. For ND, Joel's death represents a means to an end, rather than an end in of itself. They show absolutely no regard for one of the most beloved characters of the first game, a character that fans (at least ones who did not read the leaks) were INTENTIONALLY led to believe would figure prominently in the game. Instead, we see him only in flashback sequences. The fact that the player is later forced to play as Joel's murderer only adds insult to injury, making the player seriously question whether to continue or simply put the controller down.

Furthermore, the already-burdened narrative is riddled with noticeable plot holes and oversights. Why does Abby not kill Tommy and Ellie when she has them in captivity? Her actions in the remainder of the game suggest a sociopathic misanthropy with no regard for the value of human life (more on this to follow). Clearly in any realistic setting, she would have eliminated both of them to "tie up loose ends," remarks that her compatriots offer. It makes less sense because Joel himself, at the end of the first game, kills Marlene, responding snidely to her pleas for her life, "You'd just come after her (Ellie)." Additionally, Ellie leaving the map in the aquarium after she kills two characters is similarly unrealistic. While she clearly exhibits trauma at the thought of killing a pregnant woman, surely Tommy or Jesse, who arrive moments later, would have noticed the map and grabbed it. These glaring issues add fuel to an already on-fire story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's gonna be sort of difficult to sort out my thoughts here.

Positives: Beautiful graphics, voice acting, sound design, and lighting.
Negatives: There's probably at least one flaw with every other element of the game.

Regarding Joel's death, the storyline definitely could’ve been set up differently. Calling it a plot twist is giving it too much credit. It came out of nowhere, only happened because of a coincidence, and didn’t make sense with the characters involved. The only parts of the story I fondly remember are the flashbacks with Joel.

The writers seemed to have forgotten what made the first game so remarkable, the relationships between all the characters, especially Joel and Ellie. The story would’ve been virtually the same if they found something else to preface the revenge plot, and the player would actually be satisfied by getting the story and relationship the trailers suggested they would get.

Additionally, no one wanted to see the story from Abby’s perspective because we saw her do something horrific before we ever sympathized with her. Maybe if they switched it up a little, mixed her sections in with Ellie’s, instead of ripping us out of the story we paid for/expected for 10 hours of playing the character that bludgeoned a man in front of his brother and surrogate daughter, the player could've sympathized with Abby without force.

Abby's story isn't even boring. It just rips us out of the expected story and drops us with a character we don’t sympathize with. Plus the fighting was already getting really repetitive, almost no one wanted to sit through the same journey from a different perspective with no breaks or differing fighting styles. You have to work to sympathize with Abby, something you shouldn’t have to do with a well-written story. The character was introduced as someone who kills her saviors, then you’re just expected to forget about it and fall for the blatant “feel bad for her” narrative with her dog, that zebra, and the flashbacks with her dad and Owen.

Also, everyone knew Joel was an antihero. Everyone knew he was going to die, and knew he at least partially deserved it. The issue I have with how they handled it was that they did it too early/without enough care towards the character’s values and instincts. They butchered a beloved character's values for a revenge plot that didn't even have a satisfying ending. Naughty Dog can be smart, they could’ve thought of a better way to set up the revenge plot and still have a good game.

The pacing was horrible. There was too little actual plot to stretch it out to 25 hours, so they filled in the holes with horrifically repetitive combat. They came up with very few puzzles and scarcely any unique fight sequences making every fight sequence fall short of interesting. The AI is smarter, but still quite dull and easy to fight. Fighting infected was unbearable, boring, and every kill seemed to be the same. It was so much more interesting to fight the humans. Let me repeat, bad zombies in a *zombie game*. Every time I was thrown into the dark or heard a clicker, I sighed because I knew I'd have to painstakingly kill every infected for the hundredth time. Game mechanics have barely improved since the first game, seven years ago.

They treated every character like they were as expendable as a piece of paper. Nobody reacts when their friends die, not Abby when she watches Manny get shot, not Ellie when Jesse is murdered in front of her. I'll say it again, they forgot what made the first game special, the *relationships*.

    Final Thoughts:

I came in with an open mind, excited to refamiliarize myself with the relationships and world I fell in love with during the first game. I had avoided spoilers thus far, and was coming in blind without any outside opinions. I was let down profoundly. It seems as if they came in with all these fractions of fight scenes, deaths, sympathetic moments, designs of maps, game mechanics, and other elements, decided on a 25-hour playthrough time, and then mashed them all together haphazardly. The game uses your love for the first game and trust that they'd do right by it to manipulate you into spending your money.

I will always be fond of the first game, and there are some moments that are alright to sit through in the second. I even found myself wanting to go back to specific fight scenes because they brought something fresh to the table (scenes with sniffer dogs, fighting seraphites in the foliage, trying to escape the incredibly detailed school building in Seattle, etc.). The concept of traveling across the city throughout the duration of the game could've been a brilliant concept.

But the game doesn't have any value of replayability, and the characters' decisions, behavior, and the overall plot makes me regret staying hopeful and preordering instead of just reading the spoilers and watching a playthrough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. PART 2 - I had so much to say, I have split my review into 2 parts. The first part is posted under the username “rwdyehouse.” See part one for analysis of visuals, gameplay, accessibility features, and some story elements.

After seven years of anticipation, ND gives its loyal followers a contrived, hackneyed revenge plot that isn’t even well-orchestrated. The main theme that ND hammers into the player’s head throughout the game is childishly simple: "revenge=bad." Any children's parable could have taught this lesson. And probably more effectively too, because the story-telling has major issues as well. The narrative follows the vindictive pretensions of Ellie and Abby and attempts to pontificate this "revenge is no good" theme. By the end, however, it is clear that Abby got all she wanted and lost nothing of value to her while Ellie gained nothing and lost everything of value to her. As her friends are systematically killed, Abby evinces no strong emotional reactions to their deaths and never even mentions them. In essence, as her friends die, her affect remains totally flat while her homicidal fantasies become increasingly potent, to the point where she nearly knowingly murders a pregnant woman with ZERO remorse. Revenge brings her no ill; in fact, in a cruel twist of fate, the only ill the comes her way is precipitated by her attempts to rebuild her life with the Fireflies. On the other hand, Ellie bears the full brunt of ND’s “comeuppance of vengeance,” losing every significant relationship in her life either through death or estrangement. She even loses the ability to play the guitar, the last real connection she had to Joel. The inconsistency in this narrative is jarring, displaying a contempt for another of fans’ favorite characters and undermining ND’s condescending attempts at moralizing.

Lastly, one of ND’s hallmarks was making gamers feel a connection with the characters that inhabit their fantastical worlds. The Ellie-Joel relationship is largely responsible for the success of the first game. In this game, they throw this out the window. They present gamers with a distasteful slate of static, forgettable, and unlikeable characters. In fact, many feel satisfaction as the characters from the Abby arch are murdered by Ellie and Tommy. Players harbor a special animus for Abby, the emotionless, robotic killer of Joel, a character that ND forces players to follow for half of the game, a huge risk that failed spectacularly. ND tirelessly tries to ingratiate Abby with the player, attempting to give them her side of the story. They somehow do not realize that such efforts are doomed from the start. When Abby murdered Joel, she was immediately labelled irreconcilable by many players, myself included. No amount of “seeing her side” would save her in my eyes, making her portion of the game tremendously difficult, even unplayable for some. I’m sure many experienced an acute schadenfreude as they saw her enervated and emaciated body at the end of the game; or, like me, maybe they were simply too disillusioned to care.

I could say much more here about the unconvincing story writing, dreadful character development, cheap shock-value “twists,” or about how this game essentially invalidates the ending of the first game, but I’ll leave that to others because I know there are thousands more who feel the same bitter disappointment and resentment that I do.

The gameplay from the first game is polished to perfection. The story deals with fleshed out characters dealing with the morality of their actions, facing their consequences and most importantly, forgiveness. Naughty Dog subverted expectations from what the story fans wrote in their heads and delivered on something personal for the
    Developers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure why everyone is hating on this game. I feel like it is a solid 9.4. I don't have to agree or disagree with something to enjoy it. It's entertainment, not a life altering experience.

The game adds to the first game by adding additional movements, weapons, and minor tweaks. The only reason I can't give it a higher score is the constant fights get to be monotonous. Some parts felt way too drawn out. The first game moved at a nice pace, and this game is a much slower pace that gets a little frustrating at times.

As far as the twists and turns the game took, I enjoyed and hated them. I didn't like seeing Ellie as the bad guy or Abbey as someone I empathized with and actually felt was more "mature" in the game. There sometimes is no happy ending, and The Last of Us Part 2 didn't give us one. It gave a great insight into forgiveness, love, bleakness, and the failures of being human.

I can only imagine people are upset by Ellie's sexual orientation, the death of Joel, or the characterization of Ellie in the game. Who cares if she is a lesbian. Absolutely non-issue for this game or any game. I think everyone is bent over Joel dying early on and Ellie is no longer a helpless child, but a vengeful adult.

The game is extremely violent and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It was uncomfortable in a few parts and I was constantly wanting to make different decisions contrary to Ellie's decisions. I didn't feel I needed to do that with Abbey.

Overall, a really great game and it will stand up as one of the best on the Playstation 4 or any game this generation.

the story is the single worst thing I have ever experienced. The characters are all over the place and their development from the first game is undone. Some of their actions make no sense and their characters are destroyed

    [ spoilers]
you play half the game as a character they try to shove down your throat that is not likeable at all. That story drags on and no matter what they throw at you. You do not feel for her. She is unlike able. And not fun to play as. Her story takes forever and the entire time you’re thinking “when will I play as Ellie again” becuase you do not care about Abby at all even though that’s what the game wants. It’s insane that they give you 10 hours of sob story and it still does not make you like her. You also have to fight against Ellie as her at one point. And it basically makes you want to stop playing the game. You should not be rooting for a character you play as to die,

Not to mention the story is so out of order and all over the place. You play in a flashback and then play a flashback in that flashback and so on. Not to mention joel dies in the very beginning of the game and in the marketing they changed models to make you think he was in the game more which is straight up lies. Abby, the character they make you play as not only kills Joel but TORTURES him to death. And never feels any remorse for it, yet we’re supposed to sypathize with her because she has a cute dog? She tortures prisoners in cages brutally and at one point just turns her back on the people she once considered HER people/family with literally no remorse. When she goes to kill Dina, Ellie says wait no she’s pregnant, Abby says “good” how are we ever supposed to relate/like Abby unless you are a pyschopath like her. The pacing is also suuuuper off

I think Dina and Ellie are a very cute couple, kind of awkward writing at times but overall good. Until the scene where Ellie reveals she is immune and then Dina randomly blurts out she is pregnant. Which is, not how conversations work. I’m kind of disappointed as how the LGBT characters were written as an LGBT person myself. This could have been a big chance for us with a huge presence and representation in a big videogame like this. But everything fell apart and now I believe it’s working against us rather than for us. It’s almost like 7 different people were told to write a story for the game and they weren’t allowed to talk to each other and then they mashed the ideas together.
Overall. The story is very bad. There were many times where I just wanted the game to be over already

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was READY to hate this game because of what others thought. I was really mad that Joel died so early in the game. I knew he was going to die (after everything he did in the first one YES he deserved it) But once i got into it DAMN the story was good. Make no mistake there are NO heroes in this game. This is a BLEAK story but if your able to get passed your personal bias and understand no one is the good guy in this game. You will enjoy it, the combat exploration, enemy AI and the expression of everyone face while they fought is just such a massive improvement over the first one. Give this game a fair chance knowing everyone is the villain in someones story and its great.

Ill say i think the story would have been a bit better if it was not done in flash backs. Seeing Elie grow and her anger at Joel would have made his death less of a surprise for those coming into this game thinking Joel was the hero. I hope for some story DLC but i will say Just like the first game after you beat it once there is no real need to go back in.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really don't get all the bashing this game is getting, I loved the story from start to finish, and yes, I had read the leaks, and sure, some were true and some were not, I've got some points

-First, Joel dying? Sure made me cry, but I don't think it was something wrong, I mean, it's a zombie-apocalypse world, people die eventually, death itself could be spontaneous, also, we all saw that coming.

-Then, Abby, I really loved Abby, and i didn't thought i would, but the game has on emphazis on character development, Abby killed Joel because of a good reason ( at least from her point of view ), and was mature enough to learn from her mistakes, even faster than Ellie, I liked her character, and the game made me sad too as it gets you to learn and see everything from her point of view after we killed everyone important from her with Ellie.

-Ellie, wel my girl, you can clearly see how she has to make terms with Joel's absence, her grief, her feelings to him ( wich she could never actually told him, as we cleary see that she feels him as a father, but doesn't have the guts to tell him ), and how she clearly gets blind by revenge, it's very human, I mean, I felt pretty connected to her thinking on those who I had griefed in my life, it's a pretty sad journey, and i liked it, also, I loved her relationship with Dina, our little Ellie is so mature!!!

-And the ending, well I can see too why too many people is hating on it, Yeah, we made a long last trip to Santa Carolina just to kill Abby, Ellie even lost everything to Dina and JJ, but there's the catch, Ellie didn't had any more reasons to keep chasing Abby no more, I mean, poor Abby lost everything to Ellie too and still, prefered to just not kill her and Dina, she spared their lives, this, revenge cycle, hatred cycled or any name that you wanna give to, it's a common thread nowadays on media, and I'am not mad that Neil's chose it, as my old cowpoke said ´´Revenge is a fools game´´, and Ellie clearly had to pay for it, ultimately to spare Abby, as her last piece of humanity cames with an image of her loved Joel, I loved that, i felt so bad beating Abby up, I'm glad Ellie didn't became a total monster at the end because of her hatred.

I loved the game, from start to finish, pretty emotional, pretty nostalgic, good story, gameplay is just what you would expect from the first one with few great additions ( being able to lean on the ground for example ), and, I really feel satisfied with it.

I even have friends who used to bash the game because of that stupid snowball effect, and they changed their minds when they played it LOL.

    it's a 10 for me, no more.

No multiplayer despite a 7 year development, and misleading trailers. By the end of it all, everything you experience just feels pointless. Like a waste of time, and a missed opportunity. Might've been good on its own merits, but to call this a Last of Us game, you carry a certain weight with that name, and the ideas of this revenge tale just don't land. I felt nothing for these characters, and barely even got to know them. A far cry from the well written story of the first game. I feel for anybody that pre-ordered this expecting one thing and being blindsided by the devs need to "subvert player expectations". Combat can be fun and designs are beautiful, but thats not enough to warrant people to play this. Ultimately its a story narrative, and it fails in that regard to being interesting, or even furthering the characterization of these characters.
My low score is reflective of the deceit I felt from the trailers, I never looked at the leaks cause I trusted naughtdog to deliver. What they gave me was half a story, no multiplayer, and death of great & new characters for shock value that neither carries the story or draws you. I hope to god they never make a sequel. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, please play the game fully through before slandering it as they worked really hard to complete it. Two, the game itself is amazing overall. Yes killing off Joel was absolutely awful, I literally resented playing it like 20 minutes after that death, but I kept going. They really played my emotions like a tiny violin, I was pissed, much like Ellie herself. I murdered every single Wolf and didn’t care, I wanted revenge for Joel. They made me profusely angry when I had to play as stupid buff Abby but I understand why, you’re not going to like her, but sometimes life gives you unfavourable characters that you must deal with. I spent half the time as Abby just letting her get eaten but unfortunately the show had to go on. As it does go on, I start to feel a bit guilty about wanting to kill Abby, I felt compassion for her story. Yes it is annoying that she killed Joel (don’t get me started on how Jesse died, I liked him) but I get to understand both the sides of revenge. It was an emotional story about how two young girls are dragged into violent turmoils due to their fathers or father figures, they were brought into the drama in the worst way possible and their grief, anger and love fuels their need for vengeance. In the end, I understand Ellie not killing Abby, she was tired mentally and physically from her revenge and even though she travelled all that way, it wasn’t worth the guilt and pain after all. Now the ending was a bit anticlimactic but I will give them the benefit of the doubt since I loved the whole game, the ending was left a bit open-ended due to her setting off in search of Dina and JJ (that baby is cute ya’ll). It’s honestly the best game I have played in such a long time and it left me wanting more of Ellie’s story and even Abby’s which I hate to admit (what’s with all the murdering of pregnant women Naughty Dog?!). In short, I hated it, gave it another chance and ended up loving the story. Expand

Characters we learn to love also die there, and at times and circumstances deemed unfair. People who are leaving bad reviews here have either not completed the game or are too childish to grasp the not-so-popular storyline. The game is about revenge, how far we can go in the pursuit of it. It’s deep and thought provoking, not for children or people who can’t read/understand heavy content. The only aspect of this game I’d change is the decision making element. I think it should be up the players what Ellie and Abby want to do as a result of they have seen and learnt throughout their journeys, specially whether Ellie should accept Tommy’s proposal or even if she (we) should have killed Abby at the very end. Said that, this game is actually much deeper than I thought it would be and as such I give immense credit/recognition to Naughtydog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know what? I created an account here just for to write an review on this game. And I want to do it in a smart way with examples and explanations, but I so overwhelmed with emotional and disappointment, I just can't.

I loved the first one. I love the story, I love Joel and Ellie and have the huge attachment for them. And what did I get in part two?

    A nightmare.

I was forced to watch a Joel's death and then I was forced to play as the person who killed him. The Naughty Dog is really think that player could grown an attachment for Abby just because she had a dog, a group of some sh***ty friends and saved two random children that came out of nowhere?

    NO. That's not enough.

All time playing as Ebby I was like "oh okay I don't care about you nor your back story come on let me play as Ellie again". I wanted a f****ng revenge or a choice at least - to kill or to spare Abby, but got some pacifistic s***t in the end.

We have seen how Joel was beaten to death, we have seen Ellie tearing apart being forced watched it... and after all this, after what Ellie was been through to get to Abby, she is letting Abby go? She lost her FAMILY, LOVE OF HER LIFE, friends for this and she is LET ABBY GO? This is some sh***t. It's ridiculous. I'm telling you. It's irrational decision for someone like Ellie. It doesn't fit her personality at all.

And let's talk about Srcars for a second. Like... what do we know about them besides it's some kind of cult fighting with The WLF? Hmmm... nothing? These two children - Lev and Yara. Who are they? The literally came out of nowhere. Like LITERALLY. Why Lev cut his own hair? What rule doesn't allow it? What other rules is there at all? Why Lev decided to go to his mom? For what was all this Scar's children story?

Oh, I tell you. To show Abby bright side, like, "look she is doing all this to save life of this poor girl and going to Island to rescue Lev risking her own life, oh, she IS so kind LOVE HER NOW, feel sorry for HER! Yeah, she killed Joel, but she HAD HER REASONS, LOOK - HER FATHER IS SO SWEET HE LIKES ANIMALS, oh no, bad Joel killed him (and a bunch of the other guys to protect Ellie at first place)!"

Abby’s dad was an angel fighting for the future of mankind, yeah, right. So what would happen if Ellie had a real parents traveling with her to the Fireflies, thinking that their child can help making a vaccine, and then finding out this people is about to kill her. What would they do? Say "okay" and go?

The whole Abby story is weak and has a lot of plot's hole. Yeah, maybe Naughty Dog was trying to draw a parallel between Ellie and Joel and Abby and Lev/Yara, I get it. But it doesn't work at all. Abby is a not mentally stable. She is not a "villain to hero", she is a dummy. We see Abby like a ruthless killer, we see how she obsessed with revenge - and when she get what she want she all the sudden became a loving MOTHER?

Oh, come on! It's such... Gosh, I wish I could swearing.

Ellie clearly has a PTSD, she can't sleep, she has a hallucination. She is affected by all this happened to her, by what she had done. We see how she changes. This hurts.

But Abby stay the same. I totally get Abby’s motivation and her pain about the lost, but I just don’t care. I don’t feel anything for her at all.

    Ellie deserves better.
    Joel deserves better.

Abby is not deserving anything - nor a forgiving or a lot of screentime.

    I AM DISAPPOINTED.

7/10 for graphics - but I want a good story, not a cool texture of grass.
    0/10 for the story.

The graphics, animations and setting are top notch, but the way the developers make you play half of the game with a character you can't help but hate completely ruined it for me. The story seems to be written to shock and show gamers that nothing is black and white but it ends up being a disjointed story where you feel attached to no one including Ellie. A huge disappointment after all of these years of waiting. Expand

I just finished playing the game yesterday. This is a game that can be played but is not too comfortable.

    Great visual effects
    Very good operating experience
It can be said that it is currently the best 3A game at the technical level
    But that's all.

As a story-centric game, it is out of touch with the player.
Ambition and huge and complicated information caused a disconnection in the rhythm of the game, did not tell a story well,

    Small problems with gaming experience:
    1. Repeat redundant battles, causing a disconnection in the game rhythm, especially in the last part of the game, even increase the sense of boredom
    2. Inexplicable killing, too bloody but aimless killing, completely different from Part 1
    3. Monotonous battles and monotonous enemies, no characteristic variants, battles generally lack a sense of impact
    4. Too many guns and weapons, this is not Rambo, nor Laura or Drake.
    5. The weakness and abruptness of the last few chapters.

The core failure lies in the plot concept, storytelling method, and end user experience
    1. Failed narrative rhythm. The developer has great ambitions and the settings are too grand, but the story is not well told. The inexplicable turning point, lack of foreshadowing, blunt evolution, set accidents in order to surprise the players, but most of them are actually speculative. The timeline of the story is not long. Unlike the previous generation, players can experience the growth of the protagonist, and the second part feels more confusing.
    2. Disappointing storyline. The ending of the characters is not necessarily a failure, but it is too much to raise the story to a philosophical or moral level, so that it is out of reality, unlike the generation, there is no sense of substitution, and the player can feel the same when facing the choice, lacking the moment that can actually move people. /Substitute. Looking back eventually, you will understand what the screenwriter wants you to know, but you will feel deeply inexplicable and meaningless.
    3. Contradictory and chaotic design. The developers intend to tell us that this is a complex world, so the recognition of the protagonists is also very chaotic and complicated, for example, crazy killing but beginning to talk about morality in the plot; inexplicable, fickle values and trade-offs; role positioning has increased a lot Non-core elements, sexual orientation, and emotional lines, but they are abrupt and not deep enough, and actually do not help the theme of the story sublimation; according to this type of storyline, the supporting role will be very bright, but it is actually not impressive enough, like a toolman.

    Serious disconnect with the player
Lack of respect for players, like Blizzard, when game developers become arrogant and think that players should play a game according to the developer's wishes, losing player support is inevitable. When a game requires the player to understand the writer, rather than the writer telling the player a good story, naturally no one likes the story. When looking forward to a bedtime story, telling a horror novel is obviously not a good choice, whether it is out of the philosophical height of hope to exercise your courage. A disgusting story. When developing a game, don’t forget that it’s selling stuff, why do players buy it, and what do players want to buy. Thanks to the word-of-mouth of the previous generation, the game is selling very well, but the next generation of works may be affected.

In the previous generation of games, we realized that guarding hope in despair. In this work, the developer destroys hope with ease, and makes the people we guard become inexplicable, trying to educate us about the morality and complexity of the world. However, the real world is much more complicated than games, and we don’t need to learn morals through a game. What we need is a game that can touch us and can see the shadow of our ordinary people, not afraid of suffering, but always belief.

Personally speculate that the developer is too hoping that the plot has a breakthrough from the generation, so that it exceeds the ability. They can feel the anger of the players, but they dare not admit it.

There are already a lot of challenges and difficulties in the world in 2020. I don’t know why this kind of plot game was launched at this time.

    Sorry for my poor english

Let's get this settled! This game is nothing short of art.
    Visuals, stunning and immersive.
Game-play, intense, challenging and provides those sweet dopamine hits that we all strive for in gaming. Voice acting is on point. The story sucks you in and challenges your usual conventions. It pushes you to really analyse the desperate actions of your heroes. This game brought me to tears,

This game brought me to tears, filled me with despair and anger, and at times, increased me belief in mankind's ability to show kindness.
This is not a paint-by-numbers sequel (which is where I think we see a lot of these negative reviews, the other negative reviews, well, I would prefer to not even mention those as I want to keep this about the video game), but do not let that put you off, this game will live long in the memory, It will not only be seen as a beautiful addition to the incredible first game, but a classic in its own right.

Gameplay and graphic wise, it’s super good.

But that’s not why you play this game is it? This game is heavely story based and is some what more of a movie. And the story sucks as everyone know. Naughty dog just want a pat on the back for their LGBQT friendly game. GOOD JOB

A game with disgusting gameplay that is painful to play. BUT as a movie is not so bad. If the game removes all the gameplay (which is unclear why it is needed there), then it will become better. I believe that games should be judged by gameplay and not by plot. And if you judge so, the Last of us 2 is 0-3 out of 10, if the plot is 7-8 out of 10.

This is a very good story with a lot of twists and a final that will make you feel sad but that's definitely a good ending for this story, the berfect example of the "butterfly effect". Many people were disappointed about Joel's death but you can't rate 0 only beacause your favorite character is dead. Graphics and gameplay are also amazing. Expand

I was fan of first game and consider myself a Naughty Dog fan boy so I was going to love it no matter what. The game itself for me is just an extension of the first. Felt to be just extra levels to play through. The story is very enjoyable but I would have preferred to choose the the path of the story rather than being led to the final outcome just as an observer.

El juego es excepcional en varios aspectos, tanto como el gameplay, banda sonora, pero dondo cojea es en la narrativa, ya a mitad del juego la narrativa se torna amarga llevandote a un final muy triste.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
