A brilliant game. It makes you feel all sort of emotions and leaves you with a lot reflections. Very different from any other video game.

It is a really bad, disgusting, dark storyline. I have been waiting for this game for 6 years already, and just waiting for this kind of plot? I can not accept it. I strongly suggest Naughty dog to change the story plot like selective storyline. People can choose whatever they like, and I believe that most of big fans in this game tend to a happy ending~~~~~~~~~~

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly. This sequel has disappointed my expectations of this game. Its storytelling was mixed and confusing. The combat was plain boring. It took the fun out of me playing when you travel through missions and you have to try to comprehend Exactly whats going on between the players. The ending was so confusing. I atleast expected elle to get revenge from such a a horrible character. The game even expects you to play as the character that killed joel. I had no sympathy for abby because it made no sense why we have to play as the villian. Akward sex scene by the way which involved infidelity and fetishin intentions. Overall, i couldnt understand why neil drukman had to do this alone. You know you cannot leave kids playing with knives because someone is going to get hurt. In conclusion, the game was a mess. I wish i can return it but i downloaded the game. Expand

Review bombs aside, I am torn on how I feel about TLOU2. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. To wit, most of the complaints about an agenda are ultimately unfounded, but that only means that the game isn't 'trash', but I am struggling to say that it's great.Review bombs aside, I am torn on how I feel about TLOU2. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. To wit, most of the complaints about an agenda are ultimately unfounded, but that only means that the game isn't 'trash', but I am struggling to say that it's great.

I really enjoyed my time with TLOU2 while also disliking it at the same time, but not to the point where I would call it a bad game. On the one hand, as with its predecessor, Naughty Dog has made a solid stealth action game and proven that it can make games where weapons sound and feel powerful unlike with its other globetrotting action franchise (that, for the record, I despise - all four of 'em). On the other hand, it is absolutely enslaved by the story it wants to tell and the game suffers for it despite much of its execution being really well done.

Like my opinion, TLOU2 seems ultimately divided on what it wants to be. As a game, it is solid fare, but brings absolutely nothing new to the table and doesn't further the genre one bit. However, its production values are through the roof and if you have any appreciation for 3D artistry, it is found here in droves. Every little detail is accounted for and in a delightfully-smooth way. I spent much of my time simply admiring the environments, knowing just how much work went into each prop, character, and piece of debris, let alone gawking at the tremendous achievements in lighting. Yet despite all that, you're still scavenging for crafting items, sneaking around boxes, desks, crates, or whatever, and stabbing or choking people out. Unfortunately, due to the story TLOU2 wants to tell, you spend more time fighting people than zeds and a lot of the tension and suspense that the original title excelled at providing (courtesy of no-longer-at-Naughty-Dog Bruce Straley) is missing as TLOU2 becomes a standard shooter. It's very clear when danger is approaching as you'll pull out a weapon. It's very clear when you've killed everyone because the music stops and the character tells you so. It is very clear when you are expected to simply be exploring because it's safe to do so. Where traversal of the environment in the original was often clever and thrilling, here it's simply going from one arena to another and it just. Doesn't. Stop. For a game that brings so little to the table in terms of gameplay, to stretch what little there is over several tens of hours became absolutely mind-numbing, especially when the AI is so extremely exploitable. The game excels, as expected, when you are traversing zed-infested areas because they are relentless when alerted, but these are relatively few and far between. Most of the time, you'll be facing humans and they will file at you one by one, rendering most of the cat-and-mouse game completely moot. I often found myself going through empty areas because I simply killed everyone in one corner.

It's the other half of the game's identity - the one in which it pretends to be a film - that holds the game hostage. While it has been accused of having an agenda, I have to say that people with agendas tend to be more overt about it. Instead, TLOU2 suffers from an obsessive need to be understated and subtle. It's really not about furthering politics on any level (it's really not that deep), but hopelessly devoted to the "craft" of the storytelling. To its credit, it doesn't feel the need to bash you over the head and say "look at what we're doing," and quite often, the execution of key elements in the story are expertly done. It's the stuff surrounding it that really drags things out and the best way I can describe it is like a terrific novel that could be made better if you ripped about 200 pages out of it without losing a thing. Because of the obsession to give you as little explicit material as possible, you spend most of your time simply slogging through drip-fed revelations when much of the game could actually be cut out. If an entire third of your story is simply travelling from one point to another (and remember, the gameplay doesn't evolve at all), then most of it can be cut. As a result, the story isn't bad, but it's entirely too drawn out and the game itself is ultimately too damn long because of it.

Ultimately, it comes down to a game that, on the whole, is fantastic, but could use a tremendous amount of improvement. If gameplay evolved over its 30-40 hours of runtime, perhaps it would have been more compelling. If much of the fluff and uneventful content was removed, perhaps it would have been more thrilling. The story can be poked several times for its weaknesses, but it could also be held up several times for its strengths. Some characters have wildly inconsistent motivations or logic, yet those same characters can have extremely strong foundations and compulsions as well. It's rather inconsistent, and that's the rub.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game wasnt perfect but it was not far off from the feel of the first one. The game play especially was that same feel with a little more challenge to it. The sections do get repetitive and predictable by the time your a good 10 hours in but it's still fun.

Peoples main complaints seem to come from an attachment to the death of Joel, which definitely made me angry at first, but I assume that was the whole point. Maybe they could have done a better job of making Abby likable but truly by the end of her 10 hours I was invested and the clash with Ellie really made me upset that my two characters were now fighting. People seems to also not understand the Ellie story at all, she was a kid that grew up deeply troubled by what Joel did for her and she is wracked with guilt for even being alive. Her getting revenge was her way of making Joel's mistake mean something to herself on top of just being plain revenge. The fact that she couldn't do it at the end was a final release (we hope) of that guilt she carried around for years. And that is exemplified by the final flashback where she was finally ready to start trying to forgive Joel for what he did. If people cant see the catharsis there and not understand why she did what she did its not bad writing, it's bad understanding of human emotions and behaviors. Everything she did made sense, minus some plots hole the story was relatively tight.

The guilt from killing each member did not make much sense however and even if I can justify the pregnant one and the one she tortured I still feel like this part of the story was weakest and made the least amount of sense, shes killed so many people before why freak out now?

Anyways this game did not deserve the user score it received and is a beautiful sequel to a wonderful franchise. If they do another one after it I truly would hope they focus souly on Ellie though as the Abby character doesn't leave a lasting impression and at this point I only want to see Ellies fall from grace or her rise to the top, we have seen her grow up and her traumatized time for an end game.

The Naughty Dog was brave, she took risks; but she took a good risk and she did great. I felt more of those emotions, which start from happiness, to anger, to sadness, compassion, empathy, to the point of being empty. I didn't think I could feel all these emotions put together, in fact there was a time when I didn't know what emotions to feel - I was in trouble. Every point of view was important, and you have to be the most analytical to understand and appreciate what it is and that will be the masterpiece of years. Morality is there, and if you have not understood the meaning of history or, indeed, morality, you have not really understood what The Last Of Us is in general.

    P. S. Some critics are nonsensical, have the same modus operandi and all look the same: clearly they come from people who have not played it, those who have not understood it, who do not have a Playstation, or who feel "offended" by the themes covered in the game.

I have since played through the game a 2nd time and got the platinum trophy. My opinion is unchanged and only reinforced. This is one of the best game's I have ever played and arguably just as good if not better than the 1st game. While this is a direct sequel, both games stand alone as very different experiences that compliment each other in an incredible way. The Last of Us Part II is an experience like no other and is something that will stick with me for a long time. Bravo to the entire team at Naughty Dog for crafting something so ambitious and groundbreaking.

    Queue those initial thoughts:
The Last of Us Part II is the sequel to my favorite game of all time. My hype for this game was immeasurable and I luckily strayed away from all spoilers and went in with a completely open mind. I'm no game reviewer so i'll keep it fairly short. That being said, this game did not disappoint me in the slightest. I can't even begin to describe this emotional roller coaster of a journey Naughty Dog (@Naughty_Dog) so meticulously crafted. No game, no movie, no type of media has ever made me feel so many different emotions. One example being I have never cried my eyes out while playing a combat sequence before, let alone multiple times. Whether I was angry, confused, heartbroken, happy, laughing, or in shock, this game took me on a wild journey and held me in its grasps to the very end. You can tell there was a lot of love put into every single aspect, the environments, the level design, the little things that many might possibly not even notice. The attention to detail is staggering and the entire team should take a bow. The acting and writing is outstanding and Ashley Johnson (@TheVulcanSalute) puts on one of the best performances I have ever seen in any form of entertainment. The animations and visuals are drop dead gorgeous and the best I have ever seen in a video game. The gameplay is a huge step up from the first game and I enjoyed playing through every combat scenario immensely. The AI (at least on survivor) was incredibly smart and challenging and I felt like it made the experience more rewarding. Everything else aside, this was a brutal and emotional story worth telling and I believe it rightfully earned its existence alongside the first game. Whether you end up loving it like me, or hating it, I believe it is something you need to experience for yourself.

Abby to me, was a female version of Joel, and by the end of the game, I was rooting for her too, because she's not a bad person. She's just trying to survive like everyone else... like Joel and Ellie...
In the end the gameplay was silky smooth, and the graphics are some of the best around. There were times I actually just walked around enjoying the scenery. A Masterpiece, masterfully done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This does not feel like a true sequel to the first game. They took characters that felt real and that people loved like they knew them personally and killed them like there is no tomorrow, make their motivations make no sense, as well as introducing new characters that are either hollow or infuriating. It is sad that the story is simply so wretched too, because there was obviously a lot of great effort put in by a lot of great artists here. Many of the levels are intense and fun to play through. The environments are great. The graphics are top-notch. We even get one exception to the terrible new characters, as Dina is quite a joy to be around.

Ultimately what kills this game can be attributed almost exclusively to Abby, and everything that revolves around her. She is an irredeemable character, killing a character that was beloved by millions, even wanting to kill a pregnant woman out of vengeance, knowing that she was pregnant. Aside from being pure evil, she is not very interesting, as when they do try to make show her light side, she is simply bland. The writing relies far too much on her backstory to try to give her character instead of actually giving her a real character. And this would not be so much of an issue if we did not have to play as her through a third of the game.

Given the muddled and confused moral, and the equally confusing narrative structure and pacing, we are left with an experience that feels not only incomplete, but ultimately leaves us in a dark, depressed state. One of the best words to describe this feeling is probably "robbed". I feel robbed of the characters I fell in love with. I feel robbed of the true sequel that the first game deserved. I feel robbed of the mood that the first game left me with, which was not one of pessimism, but of "endure and survive". With the feeling this game gives, I don't know what is there to fight for anymore.

The gameplay is fantastic, and the story was extremely immersive. The ending and game as a whole had me on an emotional rollercoaster for a week, and I absolutely love it. The game is meant to get you angry at Abby but then show the other side of the story. Joel was a good person; who has done awful things. Joel's death was justified as he killed Abby's father and so many more innocent people. The only complaint I have is how Naughty Dog advertised the game as something it wasn't, which is a Joel & Ellie adventure. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This franchise is all about the story. Without the story the game means nothing. This game does have great visuals and decent gameplay, but the main focus needs to be the story. The story is awful and it tries too hard to make you feel sorry for people that you immediately don’t want to feel sorry for. The ending was completely ridiculous and have no sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was amazing to me honestly, if you can go in with an open mind and try to understand everything, even if it's just a little, this game will emotionally grab you and walk you through it's story and even more amazing world story telling, characters feel like real people with their own proper, real issues that they have to live with, try your best to ignore all the hate it gets online, cause as far as I've seen, 80% of people I see talking crap about it haven't even played it and are just going off of a 20 minute rant video by someone with a bad mindset about the game, trust me, the story grabs you and will lovingly and painfully show you the true horrors of the Last Of Us world, weather it be the infected themselves, or the even less predictable humans, this game even made me cry at the end and yearn for Joel at the end, where he's most needed for Ellie than ever, as far as I can tell, story wise, it's amazing, gameplay and graphically, it's also amazing, the only ever issue I had, was not having enough differentiation between all the guns, as well as it feels like not enough of them, but that's personal opinion. This game is really good if you just give it a chance. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is definitely not a 10 and definitely not a 0. Personally I quite enjoyed this game and although I had some issues with the story and pacing, it still left a mark on me. It is however a very bleak game and at the end of it, I felt emotionally and mentally drained. I do not however regret getting this game at launch as my playthrough clocked in at about 25 hours but that probably doesn't include all the times I died.

My biggest gripe with this game is that they destroyed Joel's character and to a lesser extent Tommy's. In the first game, it was established that Joel did not trust people (at the beginning of the outbreak, Joel did not stop the car for a family on the side of the road and told Tommy to keep driving; Joel ran over a man he knew was pretending to be injured because he had high suspicions that it was a trap). In this Tommy and Joel gave out their real names to a group of strangers and put themselves in a situation where they were easily ambushed. This felt like lazy writing to me and was just used as a plot device to move the story forward.

Fanboys will say that Neil Druckmann addresses this by saying that Joel and Tommy became soft but this was not properly conveyed. They were still going out on regular patrols and if anything, Joel's experience would have led him to be more careful, not less. Druckmann says that Abby and her group were just regular people, not hunters. This is shown not to be the case as Abby and her group are worse; they've WLF (wolves) and they kill strangers on sight.

The game would've have been better if:
    1. They established Joel and Ellie's relationship a bit more. They should've had you playing as both characters for maybe 1/4 of the game and then kill Joel off. This would've been more impactful and would've given players what they wanted from the first game.
    2. They should've started off with Abby's arc and established her character if they wanted you to sympathise with her. Abby is actually one of the worse people in the game. She tortures Joel, kills god knows how many people and has no remorse or PTSD about any of it. She's a straight up psychopath. She did however grow on me but I generally forgive relatively easy when I'm playing something I enjoy.

Now for the good parts. The game is astoundingly beautiful, everything from the characters to the environment are breathtaking. It'll probably be the prettiest game on the PS4. The mo-cap and the voice acting are top notch. The gameplay is excellent and much more refined than the first. The rope mechanics are pretty impressive. I can definitely say I had a lot of fun playing it.

I also applaud Naughty Dog for trying something different however I wished they executed it better and responded better to criticism. I do not like the fact that they went to great lengths to deceive the fans by modifying the trailers to give the impression that Joel will have a bigger presence than he did. Plenty of people don't/won't enjoy it and that's fair. It's a very divisive game.

The first "Last of us" was one of my favorite games and I don't even own a Playstation, I saw a let's play that had me hooked. Fast forward today, I still do not own a playstation but I saw Pewdiepie's let's play. Unlike the first game you can tell there was much more of a political agenda.

This game is following the current marketing trend of inserting LGBTQ propaganda into its medium.

This game is following the current marketing trend of inserting LGBTQ propaganda into its medium. Which is not bad but very hard to do well, and really has no place in this game. The use of a multicultural cast shouts in your face "This is progress. Accept it!". However, the game fails to allow any solid connection to anyone other than Ellie or Joel. The narrative was confusing and the storytelling was sophomoric. Whoever thought is was a good idea playing as the villain for 10 hours needs to stop writing video games and go back to their tumblr blog.

As of the positives. The attention to detail is amazing. The mechanics are cool and the graphics are amazing. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort into this game. It saddens me to write this.

To conclude, This is not a 1 star game and it is not a 10 star game it is kinda right in the middle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was nothing short of fantastic

The people who are upset i would say it is somewhat justified and i can understand, however this game really does not deserve the hate it gets in my opinion. Many people seem to be upset about Joel's death. I was too. He dies very early on and I feel he deserved better. However Joel was a bad man, who did many bad things in the first game alone, let alone what took place in the 20 years between the prologue and the main game itself. To put it bluntly, he kinda had it coming.

The graphics were amazing. Even on the base PS4 i was stunned at how good it looked. Nothing much more to say about that.

With the story, It felt very strange to play as Ellie for so long and then suddenly go back to the start of Seattle from Abby's POV. Not saying i didn't enjoy it or anything, I very much enjoyed seeing the events from her point of view and learning more about her. Also, she's jacked to all hell and that's a plus in my book.

Ellie and Dina's relationship is good. It is not **** lesbianism. They feel like a real couple who care deeply for each other

I cannot speak for trans people, however imo it seems they handled the trans character very well. It is very clear they are a real person with hopes and dreams and not an empty plot point. The only time he is deadnamed is a couple times by enemies that usually die very shortly after, and i think once by his mother. He is never deadnamed by any one of the main characters and everyone is completely fine with it, that being said however, he suffers-

Everyone suffers, this game is not at all happy at all. There are not many laughs to be had, this game is sad as **** The enemies have names and that includes dogs, and people care when their friend dies. No game has come close to making me cry as many times as i did while playing this. I finished it about a week ago and i still feel depressed from the game, if you don't like the idea of being sad all the time i would not recommend getting it, atleast not yet

The gameplay was unreal, the movement felt fluid yet clumsy and realistic, and combat is unrivaled. Without auto aim turned on i felt very anxious when trying to get shots off but every time an enemy rounded the corner and I immediately aimed and popped them in the head i can't accurately describe how odd it felt. Reminds me of a part in TLOU 1 when Ellie saves Joel and says "Damn I shot the hell outta that guy huh?"

Would and will play again after i mentally recover lmao. It honestly amazes me that a video game could make me feel the way this one did and i don't think another game will even come close. The only reason i'm not giving it a 10/10 is because nothing is ever perfect. This game is fantastic, it has flaws, and i hated that Joel died after 3 mins of screen time and i don't think even the flashbacks can redeem that. But this game is far better than most people are making it out to be. Game of the Year in my opinion

This game has great graphics, gameplay, and a great story. The fight scenes are well done and they appear appropriate for the type of game it is. The cut scenes are really well done. The AI is much tougher than the Last of us original, however, Ellie is able to pull off more acrobatic moves. The entire package comes together in a way that makes this a must-play game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

O mundo de the last of us é sombrio e isso é fantástico.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2 sucked story wise. It was never as good as the first one. In the first game, it was a story about two people traveling across the country and Joel having a second chance at having a daughter. It was truly a remarkable game and perfect storytelling wise. But in the second game it felt like telling a message more than a story. The game was telling me “Revenge is bad” over and over again. With Joel killing Abby’s dad, Abby killing Joel, Ellie killing Abby’s friends, and Abby killing Jesse, and the most disappointing part about Ellie not killing Abby as soon a she saw her. Part 2 was a horrible disappointment and I wish tlou was a standalone game. It’s hard to make a perfect sequel after a perfect game. Gameplay wise it was fun. I think it is important to highlight some mistakes right away: Naughty Dog lied a lot in their trailers, something that is certainly part of the fan base's negative notes. But even though I was mistaken when buying the game, I was not disappointed in the least. If the game was broken I would understand it, but the big change was the story, which brought something more engaging and the most important of all: something different from anything I've ever seen. I was never a big fan of games, I never cared who I killed or why I was doing that, TLOU P2 showed me why I do this and most impressively, that I should feel guilty about those deaths and that all actions have a reaction.
Telling the story from two points of view was an excellent move by ND and involved me more in the story. The gameplay was incredibly perfect and fits perfectly with what the game proposes. The violence that the game shows is a faithful reflection of what an apocalypse would be where a small survivor like Ellie would have to do to survive and that makes his actions heavier and more monstrous.
Something that I think is important is not to get carried away by the negative criticism for the "fan base", because I read several and I conclude that not all of them are of importance since the only argument is that the game would be bad or because of a lesbian relationship , which I think complaining about is backward behavior and shouldn't affect the game's evaluation.
I claim without the slightest fear that The Last of Us Part II is one of, if not the most perfect game I've played. For the first time in a long time, my actions at stake have influenced my thinking in real life, to the point of making me feel like a terrible person at certain times and a good person at others. Your attitudes matter, and caring for others too, revenge is something that consumes your soul and this game shows you how. it is totally worth playing and I recommend it without a doubt.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not a 0/10 and sure as hell, not a 10/10. It falls in the middle. The visuals are amazing, probably one of the best looking games ever, Seattle looks amazing with the amount of flora and overgrowth, the world is filled with tiny details that make it feel lived in and alive, despite almost all humans being gone. As good as the visuals are this is a game, where gameplay is king, the gameplay is fine, it's effectively a copy+paste of the controls of the first game which isn't bad but it does have the same clunky feeling from the first title which can hinder gameplay but all in all it's not bad. The gameplay is also interrupted time and time agin by QTE's (quick time events) that don't need to be there, cutscenes in which you have to mash square or hold triangle happen WAY too often making me bored during some parts, it feels like an interactive movie or a walking sim for almost half the game. AI feels like a step down from the first game, they will constantly see you kill their allies and not do anything, and AI partners like Dina just got in the way and didn't really add anything; AI will almost always be seen by enemies and sometimes enemy AI will do nothing, other times they'll detect you and open fire even though you were completely hidden. New additions like prone are very welcome as it allows for a lot of flexibility in combat, the jump, on the other hand, feels almost useless even though it's used throughout the entire game for subpar platforming. The story is where TLOU2 truly falls apart, it begins with an idiotic way to kill off a beloved character, as Angry Joe beautifully said "we don't care that you kill Joel, we care HOW you do it," and it's never been more true. Characters we know make decisions completely out of character, so much that I disliked Ellie by the end of the game. Abby and the WLF are such bad people its difficult to sympathize with any of them, literally every big conflict is started by the WLF, which is sad because Abby's half of the game is easily the best. The set pieces, characters, weapons, abilities, are all so much better than Ellie's, it actually feels more similar to the first game because of the Abby and Lev's relationship and some of the puzzle mechanics. This is a revenge story in which you kill nearly hundreds of people, but not the one person that matters, makes absolutely no sense. The pacing is bad too, constantly taking us out of the moment going through flashbacks, they're fine but as a cohesive unit the story falls flat, I firmly believe if they edited/moved scenes around, the story and game would flow much better. Especially because by the time we get to Abby's 3 days in Seattle, I didn't give a **** about the supporting characters because they're all dead anyway. If it was just Abby's adventures with the SCARS this would be a MUCH better game, Ellie and Joel's additions actually hurt the story. If this was a standalone game within the LOU universe minus Joel and Ellie I'd give a 8.5/10, but its a sequel to one of the most beloved games of all time and does NOT respect it or its characters. Overall I give it a 6/10 but due to the false advertising by NaughtyDog and Sony (Joel's character model switched in the trailers to give the illusion he would play a much bigger role other than plot convenience), I deduct another point. Bad thing are:
Killing Joel wasn’t done properly and was done waaay too early on. Playing as Abby was terrible and I didn’t care about her or her friends. Abbys sex scene was super weird.( you ever get into a heated argument with someone in your friend group then Immediately start smashing?) I also didn’t really care that much about any of Ellie’s friends either. And buy the time you get to you end and you finally get to kill Abby YOU F****ING LET HER GO . NO F**K YOU Anyways , go play the first. It’s way better anyways.
And no this isn’t a review bomb, this is genuinely how I feel. I beat this game a few days after release and I have been reflecting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just for disclosure I completed the game yesterday, I never heard about the details of the leaks or had the story spoiled before playing, but I had heard that a lot of people were angry about the plot before jumping into the game. I understand people are angry, but don't agree with review bombing. I want to try be as fair as possible.

    .
This game is something I had been looking forward to for 7 years. The original game is to this day my favourite game ever, having played it 6 times, and the DLC twice.
I didn't want to set myself up for disappointment though. After all, sequels more often than not do not live up to the height of their original. The original was an easy 10/10, and I went into this expecting an 8/10.
The game got off to an okay start. Was unsure of the weird tension between Joel and Ellie, although this makes sense when we find out later on that Ellie had returned to the Hospital and discovered the truth of what happened there. Although, I was a bit confused as to why I was suddenly playing as a stranger only a little bit into the game...
Then there's the scene that a lot of people are angry about... I remember in the original game, never wanting to hop off for the night, I always wanted to keep going, and find out how their story ends. I finished it over 3 days, and always feeling really excited to get back on the PS3 and continue the story/game.
Well after Joel's death scene, I never felt that excitement. I distinctly remember wanting NOT to play. I had to basically force myself to get back onto the PS4 the next time to continue, with a "lets just get through it" demeanour. I still wanted to play through it quickly, but that was just to avoid spoilers, not because I had any strong desire to play.
There comes a scene roughly 1/3 into the game where Abby finds Ellie and Co at the Theatre, and hold Tommy at gunpoint, before then ending on a cliff hanger and taking you on some long-winded flashback through Abby's story.
This was a character I hated. I had no emotional connection with this character, they had brutally murdered my favourite character, and I had absolutely 0 interest in their story and didn't want to play as them.
For the majority of the Abby segment I was bored out of my mind. A first for me in any Naughty Dog game. I had 0 emotional investment in this character, and just wanted to get back to the characters I was emotionally invested in.
Did her scenes make me like her better? Yes. Her attitude towards Lev and Yara, and how her relationship with them grew throughout the story was beautiful. Did it make me like her though? No.
Overall, I didn't have an issue with Joel dying. They live in a **** world, with a dangerous infection and dangerous people. The idea of him retiring is a bit unrealistic. Like many other people it's the way he died that upset me.
The sick and disappointment that sat in my stomach for the rest of the game after seeing a character I had liked for 7 years go down like that, ruined the rest of what could have been a really good game. To then make you play as the character that killed him and try to be forced to like her, and at some point be FORCED to beat up Ellie even though I’m sure that was something literally no one wanted to do, was just such an awful decision and the cherry on top.
To force player to beat up a beloved character was one of the many terrible design choices of the game.
And I think it does come down to perhaps Naughty Dog's underestimation of players emotional investment in this character. I 100% know that if I hadn't played the original, and started out with this one that I would think it was a beautiful game.
As a standalone game it is brilliant. Easily a 9/10. But unfortunately it's not a standalone game, and because of everything they created with the first game, and how they then destroyed that with the second, I can't give it any more than a

If I were to describe 30% of the writing in 2 words, I choose 'Trying Hard' ...seems like some people (whom i think has attention deficiency lol) is forcing to the whole writing team the idea of accepting a new norm, which by the way is actually being accepted several years ago in the real world, duh.70% of the story flow is awesome (balance of karma stuff) btw so kodus to the writers on that part.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Too many plot holes and plot armor and really lacking in depth. Why didn't Abby just kill Ellie and Tommy the first time? Why didn't Abby kill Ellie and Tommy the second time?! Why didn't Ellie just kill her at the end, she has so many less significant people for less including dogs?! I don't buy the idea that Ellie would set out on a revenge mission in the first place or that she would have been allowed to go. I don't buy that Tommy would have set out on his own and I don't buy that he didn't die when he tried. I also don't buy that they managed to kill EVERYONE except Abby?!

Why would Ellie not want to turn back if Dina is pregnant? Why would Dina not turn back on her own if she was pregnant? Why would Abby torture Joel if she's portrayed as such a "likeable" person in the game? Why would Tommy make Ellie feel guilty about not going after Abby? That seems way out of character to me.

On top of all the above, at least half of the game play is Abby and I just couldn't empathize with her at all. I hated her and I hated playing as her. Also, the last part of the game where you play as Ellie is by far the weakest part of the game, I didn't buy into the story or the setting. It felt very cliche and quite frankly boring. I felt irritated, frustrated and disappointed with this game. Please don't but this game, if we support them then this kind of substandard nonsense will continue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game will be looked at as a historical benchmark in pushing games forward. For a comparison, in the film industry, you have the illustrious Oscars. The best movie award is an achievement of top master craft. The Games Awards is something Geoff Keighley has built up well, but it does not have quite the esteem to the general populace that the Oscars do.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that has the kind of levels of quality to be that kind of level of game for the games industry, that is, an all time great.

The game is about love, hate, revenge, forgiveness, and letting go among other things. The creator said it’s about revenge but that was being tight lipped to not spoil things before release, I suggest people listen to the Kinda Funny spoiler podcast with Neil, Ashley, and Troy for insigh.

This game is also set during 3 days for the majority of its time,

I may come back and write up an even more thorough review, but I want to speak to the hate toward the game.

Some people have subjective takes on the gameplay or story elements that the game is just not their style. That’s fine. Unfortunately there is a troll/hate train on this game for varieties of reasons. One, Neil and Naughty Dog are being accused of being SJW and having a political agenda. Just because a studio is more liberal and wants to tell stories with characters we typically don’t see does not mean there is a nefarious purpose. This has generated heat.

Additionally,, things happen in the story people just don’t like. Joel dies, You play as the person who kills Joel. Through the process of all the hatred and killing and loss Ellie ultimately does not kill Joel’s killer when given the chance.

That’s simplifying a very engaging gaming storyline with great characters, immense action, and tons of suspense.

Those who don’t “like” some of the direction of the story are mistaking their emotions with actual quality. The game is extremely well written with some exceptions. Example: in killing people Ellie drops a map. On said map, she has their hideout obviously circled. This is one thing I agree with naysayers on, that is a little too convenient to the story of their hq being found.

One small example but a majority are people just hating because they don’t like the direction.

Others try to say there is no character development which is silly. Both protagonists develop quite a bit, one character who is great devolves by the end, and many, many people die. Flashbacks do a big part of the development for more essential characters and as I stated in the beginning - the game main,y takes place over 3 days - if you are expecting development for supporting characters in a 3 day time period you are crazy. The characters had well defined personalities and those given the screen time were fantastic.

Particularly fantastic was the brother/sister combination of Lev/Yara. Prerelease people thought Abby (I had stepped around her name until now but she kills Joel) was going to be trans because she is muscular. Lev is actually trans, born into TLOU2 word perceived as female by her group but he is a male. Dina is an awesome love interest for Ellie and both (Abby and Ellie) are surrounded by a variety of fun supporting characters in Tommy, Owen, Manny, Mel, and Jesse. There are some more characters but those are ones with more screen time.

There are no heroes in The Last of Us. Joel was a Hunter in a past life before smuggling and meeting Abby. He committed horrible acts before we played as him. He also killed a whole hospital of Fireflies and stopped the cure. (I have no regrets there).

Abby is no better by brutally killing Joel.

Ellie is not any better by tracking down and killing Abby’s friends either.

Moral ambiguity, grey area, etc. is the world of this show. There is no good versus evil.

It reminds me of our extremely divided times here in the US. I see a comparison in the left vs the right in Ellie bs Abby. A vicious cycle back and forth where no one is really winning and so man6 peop,e are so laser focused on getting that next chunk out of their opponent that they aren’t stopping to consider how they can heal themselves and the world. Just as those offended by this game feel the need to go on hateful rants about it.

Speaking of the hate - look at the #’s. God of War with 13,000 submissions for ratings. This game is over 80,000 or soon there! Craziness.

I do believe the game effected people emotionally enough to drive more reactions than GoW, but 80,000 and barely even out? There is an agenda of hate here. With the growth of social media we have trolls and haters who just get their rocks off on hating. Whether they truly hate something or take pleasure in piling on, it’s a fact.

Again, people can have subjective dislikes and not be in this hateful group.

Im up against the character limits. Thanks for reading my ramblings, masterpiece game.

It's inovative show two perspectives in a game the way Naughty Dog did in The Last of Us Part II.
