I can see why people dont like this game, some scenes are pretty brutal, but personally i think its worth it for the fantastic story that is told. the perspective of abby made the ending in particular that much more crazy and brutal. there isnt much new gameplay wise apart from a few new items and traversal method, but its mostly about the story, and that is where the last of us 2 really shines Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, so, people seem to have a problem with processing the idea that any given set of events can have two or more sides to the story, so let's separate the wheat from the chaff here.

Ellie has a viewpoint. Abby has a viewpoint. YOU CAN ACKNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPT THIS AND STILL CHOOSE A SIDE. This is *my personal opinion *:

Yes, **** indeed sucks from Abby's perspective. But guess what? Ellie was honestly too young to be able to make the decision to throw her life away in a permanent choice like this. Joel was right to remove her from this situation because OF COURSE she wants to die in a blaze of glory and save the human race. She is a teenage girl, and how much more romantic a chance can you get?
But THERE IS A REASON THE AGE OF CONSENT/DRINKING/VOTING IS A BIT HIGHER THAN 14.

Ellie would have died then and there if the decision was in her hands. But she never would have met Cat, Dina, Jesse, had the years of life in between and beyond the events of TLOU2. I'm willing to bet that, with her current experience, she can look back and agree that she would have made the wrong choice. Joel knew that. He knew she would have chosen to die. He was right to take that choice away from her. She was a child then. She is a woman now. And in the end, Joel knew that he was facing the consequences of his actions in saving Ellie's life. Conversely, Doc Jerry didn't have the right to take that choice away from her, and I'm not sorry he got wasted as a result. Abby can be bitter about it all she wants; her father made the decision to end someone else's life *without asking their opinion first*. So when the tables are turned on him, he should understand that he is facing the consequences of his choice. And someone should have explained that to Abby. No one did, or if they did, they should have realized that *SHE DID NOT HAVE THE EMOTIONAL MATURITY TO DEAL WITH IT*. She clearly needed people around her who could explain this to her in an impartial and fair manner. From what we see of the remaining Fireflies, they shared the despotism and self-righteousness that she had. They felt that they had the right to force their choices on the people around them. Abby got Joel's position forced on her. She had to accept another person murdering someone she loved, without giving him a say in the matter. Joel was not willing to sit back and accept it.
I'm not saying that Abby should have to go through this either. But she needs to face the fact that her father had done to him what he intended to do to another person-- except that Jerry was willing to murder *a child*.

My feelings are that Joel did right. Jerry deserves what he gets. Abby and Ellie both need to understand not only the beliefs of the others involved, but also the fact that their actions and intentions devolve onto their children in the most direct way possible. But, for my two cents, in the beginning of the prologue, I threw Abby off a cliff. I should have won the game then and there. I choose Ellie and Joel.

But in the grand scope of things, there are no fast and easy answers in this situation. AND THAT IS THE ENTIRE POINT. Naughty Dog did a beautiful job of making the player understand that every person has different views and choices. And, in the words of the immortal Andrew Ryan, we all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us.

By far, the best game I have played. Game play is spot on, and the story is great. On the surface, you may believe it's a uninspiring revenge plot, but as you play through, you realise the plot is a vessel for an inspiring narrative, taking you through a gamut of emotions. While some are uncomfortable, they are necessary to experience the games unique story and its underlying morals. What a ride.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll try to explain the best I can the reason for my review, and there will be spoilers probably. I finished the game almost a week ago. I waited till now to avoid giving a rate based on what the story was intended to. The gameplay, the only flaw I actually remember was few times where the triangle button for action didn’t show (I could see the circle indicating interaction but the triangle button to do it wouldn’t show and wouldn’t work). But that’s ok, the rest was pretty much flawless. The puzzles, were witty enough to entertainment but not hard enough to make you get bored because you couldn’t get through it, I like them. I did found tiring some times the looting mechanics, repetitive, but that’s me; I know a lot of players that loved it. Music, outstanding as we thought, the music for each scene were so accurate, they would complete the immersive experience by starting in the right moment. Graphics were awesome, I was speechless more than a few times. The accurate description of plants taking over cities, the moss on rainy cities, the tracks on the snow and mud sections were surprisingly good. It was pretty good. Now to the controversy, the story: I don’t really hate the story, I understand the message behind the story. We hate seeing how Ellie does everything Joel never wanted her to do, she throws her life away searching for revenge instead of trying to get comfort on the family she had with Dina and JJ. But that’s ok, that’s the point, to feel it even harder because you’re watching how revenge is ruining a character you have the urge to protect, due to the first game, and everyone around. What messed up the game for me was playing as Abby and here is why:
•Abby has a game style pretty close to Joel’s. The way she executes sneaky attacks, the need to craft shiv, the ability to press down and x to quickly change the camera point of view etc. •We are forced to guide her to the theater where she kills Jessie, shots Tommy and almost gets Dina killed. •We are forced to fight Ellie in a way that resembles way too much the fight against David on the first (can’t do direct attack, have to hide and avoid make noise, have different stages to defeat her, really even the advice in the screen was similar “use listening mode to get the upper hand” ) •We have to fight Tommy as a sniper with Abby, the same way Joel had to get through a sniper on the first one. •lev and Abby bonding story resembling Joel and Ellie’s. Where Abby finds a reason to redeem herself with lev, the same way Joel finds a way to redeem himself by protecting Ellie. • this one is not that important, but also contributed. Back to the hospital, we see this conversation between the doctor and Marlene, the purpose is for us to understand that they were just making things right... but Ellie was right there, they could’ve ask, but they chose to kill her without remorse. So, while I understand the “one for the many”, I can’t say I understand their choice here. For this reason the rest of the story lost the weight it had. In general the game felt as if the developers were mocking me as a gamer and fan of the first game. They put so many thing that resembled the first game on abbys character knowing that we would hate it, that it felt they were laughing at me. So, my score is due to the poor respect they had for the players. And because to be honest when I finished it, the words that came out of me was: is that it? At that point I want even mad or sad, nothing. Finishing: I won’t discourage people from buying it, I’m honestly just sharing my experience, which can or can’t be like yours. I will recommend tho, that if your going in because of the story, watch some spoilers, because there are lots of disappointed gamers for different reasons. If you’re playing without having played the 1st one or just because of the gameplay, go ahead, you will probably love it. Have fun, Barxco.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First time writing a review, but I've been in a daze for the past 24 hour since finishing the game, and I don't know what else to do. This game is absolutely incredible. And not because it makes you feel good. Not because it's "fun." But because it moves you, if you let it.

Story: The storytelling style is very similar to a novel containing viewpoints of not only the protagonist, but also the antagonist. This style allows the reader, or in this case the player, to obtain greater context about the story world, and the overall experience becomes richer for it. Brandon Sanderson's work comes to mind here, as he often devotes large chunks of each book to writing from the perspective of "the bad guy." In a similar style, TLOU2 forces the player to live through the eyes of "the bad guy," Abby. in doing so, you realize that she's more than just a 2-dimensional villain. If you allow yourself to, you'll begin to understand her motivations, and even perhaps respect them. Hell, by the end of it, I really liked Abby. And believe me, when I first started playing through her chapters I was upset and caught off guard. But go along with it; the writers know what they're doing.

The greatest part about this is that by the end of the game, not only do you get to see Ellie make her game-ending decision about what to do with Abby, but if you've been playing along and paying attention, you will likely have also made that same decision. The writers beautifully succeeded in following one of the age-old rules of writing: show, don't tell. They don't just show you Ellie's internal conflict about whether she should kill Abby. They make you feel that conflict yourself. Well done Naughty Dog, well done.

Gameplay: As with the first game, the mechanics were spot on and exploring the world was a lot of fun. A mix of stealth and bash-em-up fisticuffs keep things interesting.

    Visuals: Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.

Soundtrack: listening to it right now. Gustavo, you are an angel.

Summary: People have every right to dislike the game, but you should play it before you judge it. I've talked to many people that won't play the game because they don't want to play as Abby. That would be the same as refusing to read a novel because there are chapters from the point-of-view of a character you think you won't like, despite the amount of global context and character development contained within those chapters. Naughty Dog, you all did a phenomenal job, and I'd love to see another game. Whatever you do next, keep up the great work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Brilliant game. Don't worry about the haters, and if you're still not sure, make sure you're looking at reviews with constructive criticism, and not just hating on Neil or the ending, or the death scene.

One question you need to ask yourself when playing this game is WHY these characters are making these choices. Ellie and Abbey are completely parallel and mirrored in their choices, except, Abbey is a story of redemption whereas Ellies is of revenge. The pacing of the game at times may be off, i'll agree, and the enemies overall are not as intimidating as before, especially when playing as Abbey, however the story is beautifully crafted and a wonderful tale of revenge, and what it can cost you. A story of love, and how important it is to hang onto it especially in these post apocalyptic times.

If you don't empathize with Abbey after playing as her for 10+ hours, then i don't blame you, HOWEVER, you have to absolutely see where she's coming from having had her father killed by Joel; a random person she's never met. I'll admit, by the end, i felt so, so strongly for Abbey, more than Ellie, and she quickly became my new favourite character as she was completely fleshed out and complex.

The game is brutal, and unforgiving, and does not make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, and in fact, will CONSTANTLY disgust you, but that's what it sets out to do.

For those who hate the ending, again, don't blame you, but it makes total sense. Ellie forgave Joel, someone who in her eyes made an unforgivable choice, so in that moment, she made sure to forgive Abbey, to save her own soul. Realizing that murdering her will bring her nothing, just like how Abbey killing Joel actually made her lose much much more than just her father

    I'm absolutely playing this again.

Well the last of us Part 2 is an amazing game with a unique story about a girl that revenges her father figure.

This takes place 4 years after the 1st game ended and seeing thses charecters again was super sweet Joel and Ellie are just amazing together and to see in past interactions how there bond grows with time.

Ellie game play is roughly a good 13 hours plus a last final act with her. i loved playing as Ellie and as when we play as her in part 1 for 4 hours and left behind was the cherry on top, this squeal was more bitter sweet.

Killing Joel off the first two hours of the game in present time was hard and brutal, and giving us a story of revenge and cold killing as they marketed for the last of us part 2.

When Ellie story is closing we get Abby's story and really was not that interesting, even though her game play levels was fun no lie.

Story score as a fan was a little disappointed and more so i wanted more of ELLIE NOT ABBY

**** Abby and the WLF Washington liberation front, and the firefly. **** them i hated them i did not like no one from that camp and i did not care about these characters.

For me Ellie (Ashley Johnson) did an amazing performance to keep me interested,, but Abby as (Laura Bailey) also did a fantastic job, but they did nothing to care or invest on her character act, i looked like 2 story's for me the one they marketed as a revenge story and a little spin off of a new character.

Over all my score is 7/10 its a fun game and im doing my second play thought to see if i can understand or fell Abby's side because Ellie is in my heart all ready, and i fell for her loss. [Link omitted per site policy]

The last of us part 2 is like having the most beautiful girl in the world only for her to have a 0/10 personality. Just because it looks good doesn't mean it is good, like a reviewer stated it's a story about right and wrong written by someone who thinks they're always right.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well. I can understand why people are saying that this game sucks. It is because most of us aren't ready to look inside of your ugliness and understand that revenge isn't a good thing, that It'll make you suffer, you'll probably lose everything and, in the end, you'll become a monster. Gamers aren't ready, they're not mature enough to understand such topics, to feel the pain, to understand that there's always two sides of one history and it doesn't matter if the other seems to be the villain... They had their reasons to do it, they have a story behind and they're, above it all, humans with feelings. The tragedy in Abby's life can show us that she had, in her vision, a reason to kill Joel. Joel had a reason to kill Abby's dad, because he saw in Ellie a new chance to protect a daughter since he couldn't do it in TLOU... People are saying this is a bad game because they aren't ready to feel and be true to themselves and be able to understand that Abby is a good person, Ellie is a good person, Joel was a good person, Manny was a good person and even Isaac was a good person, this game is about being alive and fighting for your existence and, in some point of "surviving" you'll forget about being a human. For me, TLOU Part II is a masterpiece, it makes you think about stuff you already did in your life, makes you feel terrible about some choices, makes you evaluate what really matters in the end. Naughty Dog, thank you so so much for this incredible experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t know where to start. But play The Last Of Us first before embarking on this piece of art. But for me, while avoiding anything that had to deal with this game, months prior to its release and the emerging leaks. I was totally blown away from the hard working craftsmanship from the awesome people over at Naughty Dog, again. From the super smooth and gorgeous graphics to the lively gameplay and very human like characters, it feels like a fresh breeze of air for video games. The smallest details just had me paused and just acknowledge the world that you are role playing in as Joel, Ellie or Abby. Now the narrative is **** awesome from starting as Joel telling Tommy, his brother, the lie he told Ellie that her “immunity meant nothing” when in fact he saved her cause he loves her as almost as a daughter and wasn’t able to save Sarah (please play the first one, the game echos with numerous references to Part I) to the ending where Ellie let’s go of drowning Abby. I was disappointed, at first like why did she let her go? But then I thought about the Thank You letter from Neil Druckmann on behalf of ND. “-a game that we’re incredibly proud of and that we hope will enthrall you and challenge your own views of justice and empathy.” Just my opinion, but if Ellie didn’t go to Santa Barbara to seek out Abby, she would’ve died. But this game is about retribution for Joel’s death through the eyes of Ellie and Abby for why she sought him out. Which is a gnarly chain reaction. The way the team was able to mirror those perspectives, like seeing someone as the “enemy” and then you playing as the “enemy” totally sealed off whether they are the hero or villain. Instead I saw them as two beings fighting in their own theories of justice, which usually ends in violence. And for Joel’s death, yes it was heartbreaking and a punch to the gut, but no one is invincible (even in reality) in this universe and his actions finally caught up to him, he will always be a dope character and I hope they go in depth with him more in the HBO Series, but it was necessary. From his consequences to really pushing Ellie’s and Abby’s narrative it’s just a full circle ending of violence. This game will probably be seen as a modern day “Manhunt” game but really questions, is violence the answer? Really awesome playing during the COVID-19 outbreak, potential showed a dystopian for mankind if we don’t get this fixed, but was unprecedented. So it felt like a festive game, not going to lie. And also the diversity of characters that they brought into as well was like its reflection on society but the aftermath of an apocalypse. But anyways I’m on my New Game + on Survivor, collecting the collectibles, and I haven’t felt this was from a different game since Fallout 3. There’s soo much to explore and see and for it not being really open world, they make it feel like that. Finally I just want to say that seeing Naughty Dog go from Crash Bandicoot (Smash Brandi’s Cootch) to this game just shows how much they’ve grown a lot and my first game that I played ever was from them (Crash). So a big NICE **** JOB will always go to them. Game of the Year for sure and a game to top for the decade. I’m waiting on Part III, please. Expand

This game is, without question, the most emotionally devastating story ever told in a game.

For all of those haters who decry the "politics" of the game, those people think that centering a story around LGBTQ characters is "political" rather than an a bleak, hopeless tale about real human beings.

Does anyone honestly believe that there aren't LGBTQ characters in a zombie apocalypse and that their stories aren't meaningful? Apparently so...

I wish NaughtyDog would animate all of the gameplay sequences and release it as a movie. It would be an Oscar contender.

The only reason I don't give it a 10 is that they didn't innovate much on the stealth gameplay mechanics. I got a little bored with the gameplay, but couldn't stop because I needed to know how it ended.

But as a story about complicated, often unlikeable characters struggling through the worst experiences imaginable, it is a masterpiece.

It's like Game of Thrones. All the characters are flawed and trying to make the best of the worst situation. It is a meditation on revenge and the costs to one's soul.

And it forces you to play as both the protagonist and the antagonist in order to make you FEEL for their struggles and motivations.

The developers had to know that they were probably ahead of much of their audience on telling a story that revolves around LGBTQ characters and they did it anyway.

Ten years from now this game will be considered a pivotal moment in the transition from entertainment as movies to entertainment as interactive stories.

I can't count the number of times I jumped out of my chair or had to wipe down my controller because of the sweat.

A 94 score from critics and a 5.5 score from users just highlights how far our society has to come in accepting that LGBTQ characters deserve incredible stories about their struggles just as much as straight characters in literally every other game ever made.

When I read people who say the writing is bad I feel like I'm in a different universe. There are scenes in this game that literally brought tears to my eyes.

The story would have been average if not for TLOU , in the context of the first game it is terrible with characters doing things which would have gotten them killed 30 years ago and how they have managed to survive all these years is the true miracle. The game even fails to execute the simple revenge plot properly by "making us sympathize" with the antagonist and not even finishing that up properly.
Characters - The characters are generic and one of them looks like they have been taking steroids for 10 years. Hate the character progression.
    Graphics - Great
Gameplay _ TLOU was never a game you would play for the gameplay and the story was the main draw this game falls flat in that regard still credit where credit is due it's" better" I guess.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I get into it, I have played the game and have finished it. So I have put in the however many hours it took to get it done. This is an outstanding game and it is some of the best writing for a video game you are going to experience. There is one caveat to my time with it. I am new to the Last of Us franchise, so I did not have the experience of "waiting years for this." I played through part 1 and then immediately dove into part 2, so it is certainly possible that improved my experience. There are some plot holes and some character's behave in ways that are very inconsistent. These things did not detract from my experience at all.

Yes, the game's heroine is a lesbian, GASP! And there are female/female love making scenes, GASP! For the trolls that have highlighted this as the main problem, SMH.

Yes, Joel dies very early on in the game. I know this has been a major bone of contention for many. And, as you work through the game, it turns out, Abby was probably more justified in killing him than Ellie is in avenging him. Dude killed Abby's Dad. Come on people. Ellie also finds out that Joel was completely lying to her, in a major way.

I am glad to see the gamer ratings going up for this game. It shows that people are actually working through it and figuring out the trolls are trolls. Hopefully one of the trolls has also actually played it and discovered the errors of their ways. Somehow I doubt that though.

As for the game play, it's not perfect and the main reason I am not going with a 10 rating. Many have called the game play, "clunky" and I think this is a good description for it. The game is also close combat heavy. Which is fine, and I would have appreciated more opportunity for long distance sniping. I was disappointed that you don't get access to a silenced long gun until the last 2 hours or so of the game.

All this being said, I really enjoyed playing The Last of Us, Part 2 and I cannot wait until the end of the trilogy on the PS5 ... If part 2 looked this good, damn, just wait for 3 ..

The gameplay (while the difficulty ratings were slightly sandbagged) felt smooth and innovative, and well utilized the presence of two unique playable characters. Playing as Abby, I expected to be playing a reskinned Ellie, but she really did feel like a unique character in the way you approach situations. Story wise, I don't know that I've ever felt such pain and heartbreak for a set of characters. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 give us a new story in the same universe and with some of the same main characters of the first game. It also have a good amount of new ones. The main motivation for this story is a direct consequence of the events that happened on the first TLoU.

The game play follow much of the first game adding some new movements (as crawl and rope climbing/swinging/jumping) and some new mechanics (as the rope mechanic). Ellie's knife is unbreakable (witch turn things a little bit easier) and the improvements ah more-or-less in a "skill tree" arrangement.

    [SPOILERS AHEAD]

    - About Main Story:

The mains story is well designed and you can really relate with Ellie's feelings.
The begging of the game makes us feel the same hate that Ellie feels, as we love Joel as much as she (because of the first game). So you can relate with his anger and the pursuit for revenge.

As the player advances through game you see a couple of flashbacks that explains the relationship between Joel and Ellie after the ending of the first game. Here are some of the most beautiful scenes of game (maybe both games), like the museum one.

At the end you will be just like Ellie: hollow. This isn't a game that makes you happy or gives you the satisfaction of the obvious and comfortable ending.

    - About "The Other Side" of Story:

The other protagonist (or antagonist as you wish), Abby, has strong motivations for her actions and the game tries to show you that.
Is it really hard to relate and have empathy for her since we had a entire game to learn to love Ellie. Is it really painful to play with Abby after seeing what she done and is specially painful to play with her at the final battle of her campaign.

There are some characters the are underdeveloped, like the WLF leader , Isaac. I'd love to know a little bit more of his story, but it is understandable that when writing a story you have to make some choices as not every character can have the same "screen time".

    - Footnotes:

The only thing the really made me disappointed was the lacking of a multiplayer mode. I'd really love to have a multiplayer mode like in the first game. But this was no surprise as Naughty Dog had has already told us that there was not going to be one.

    PS.:
To the ones that are afraid because the haters speech, the game is great. The story is great. The sexuality of Ellie is just another layer of her personality witch helps to make her feel real (and isn't the main point of the game at all). This is a story about hate and revenge and it accomplishes it's purpose.

When played as a sequel, you can hardly recognise the choices and careless attitude shown by Joel and by Tommy. Elly may have change, she was just a child in LoU-1. Perplex by the lack of survival instinct and destructive life choices, OK, maybe. But it feels like one of those films where you just cry watching ”for crying out loud, are you mental?”. Stupidity forced on you (decided for you) by the Naughty Dog script, that is not a game you enjoy playing.

Action is repetitive, most combat goes about the same way. The undestructive knife was not very fun, why bother with other weapons.
    Amazing graphics and facial expressions.

All in all / a boring game to play that forces you to take decisions that feel stupid, instead of the brilliant morally complex decisions from LoU 1.

I just sold my game for half price.

The graphics are amazing. The gameplay is fun, the story, not so much, but that's what the game is supposed to be. A raw story about a grim reality. I loved it.

I cannot believe all the hate this game is getting, I have been playing video games all the way back to the original Atari console. The Last of Us Part 2 outshines every game that I have played, from the masterful story telling to the amazing graphics. The haters just need to STOP!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Due to the fact that the Great Character, the man who became Ellie's adoptive dad and who had a lot of knowledge about survival, came some no name and just tortured, killed Joel with a stick, this ruined the game and the relationship both to the game and to Naughty Dog itself. I would really like to somehow revive the chtoli in the third part of Joel's game. I just can't get over what this woman did to Joel. Those who wanted to buy the second part of the game, do not waste your money. I gave a grade of 6 only because of the technical part. And for the plot, I would put 2. Expand

Much like the first, Part 2 a game that pushes the boundaries of story telling and makes you question the actions of the characters you love. The gameplay is seriously upgraded, with subtle additions that keep most encounters feeling fresh and unique. Had this game been a simple sequel that updates the characters for a new console, it would’ve been a little underwhelming. But Naughty Dog push and spin the narrative in a way that’s rarely seen - and therefore the feelings it creates are rare and powerful too. The first game changed my life, and made me into a die hard fan. The second has lived up to my hopes and expectations - it’s a unique, controversial, violent, beautiful and emotional journey that only Naughty Dog could create. Whilst it’s a shame that so many can’t enjoy it for what it should be, those that can will find it truly worthwhile, and then some. Another contender for game of the generation. Expand

I'm giving 2 simply because of its graphics and gameplay, the hard work that they put into this game cannot be denied. However, the story is nowhere near a 'masterpiece', especially when it reaches the mid point, I just couldn't bring myself to finish the game, let alone enjoying it. This is a huge disappointment. I have watched the first 2 hours of the game through youtube before buying the game to see what the fuss was about and why people hated the story, and I understood why, I was the same with those people, but I bought the game anyway after that because I wanted to experience and let my own review reflect on the game instead of agreeing with a a person review, after playing and finishing the game, I understand why naughty dog went towards this path for the story, there are some part to the story I did not like but had to be played, honestly, this game is the best game I have played so far, much more challenges and more activity to do in the game than we got in the first game, more story telling and sad scenes, anyone who just puts the review up without playing the game needs to play and finish the game instead watching someone else play and give their review of the game Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
