What made last of us part 1 beautiful was it’s simplicity and it’s evolving relationship between Ellie and Joel. But for insanely strange reason, they completely destroyed what made the first game so beloved. The first game was what cemented to me that video games could tell a moving story. Focus less on the gameplay because the message and story were just that good, and be viable. So, if that’s your formula and the story isn’t good... you’re left with this, the last of us part 2. The plot is full of holes. The story almost completely ignores the emotional attachment to the characters they completely nailed in the first one. The story is a jumbled mess of flashbacks at times that make little sense. If you’re looking for quality story telling to the next part of what happens to Joel and Ellie, I’m afraid you’ll be let down. I don’t know what else to say, how do you go from making one of the most consistent, gritty, popular, thought provoking games of all time to this mediocre, occasionally fun nonsensical story? Expand

Neil Druckmann if you wanted to make a good story on how to break the cycle of violence for this sequel, you should have seen the Pain arc of Naruto Shippuden bro, I believe more that Naruto forgave Nagato for killing Jiraiya after he told him his own pain, than Ellie with Abby, GRAPICHS: 10/10, HISTORY: 5/10...... yes, that's my review

I enjoyed playing as Abby, and I think that playing as her gave us a chance to look into her complex, inner personal life as well. I also think that Joel dying the way he did was a good choice, and I think it spoke to the way that characters in these games, many times white and male, are able to commit horrible acts and still get out of it unscathed. I liked the ending and thought that it was really the only way that the story could end, given what the overall trajectory of the plot had been. We needed to play as Ellie, in a context where it was just get and Abby and she had the upper hand, so that she could forgive Abby and grow from it. We were never given that context before, so it was really the only way that it could end. Also, the fact that Ellie ended up alone, with the one thing that Joel left him, which was being able to play the guitar, gone that again re-enforces the theme here that you can get revenge, but at the end the consequences of your actions will follow. The same can be said with Abby, as she literally lost her home, her friends, and the love of her life, all brought up because of her need for revenge. The game is devastating and cruel and left me feeling sad for days after I finished it, but it makes sense. Life is apathetic towards us, and our actions will bite us in the ass, no matter who we are. Ellie didn't get the end that we wanted for her, but she got the end that she deserved, and I think that is something to be appreciated. Expand

It is not a clever plot twist, it is a lazy tactic that requires no real thought. What is the audience expecting to happen? Well let's have Brandon stark be king. You make a revenge game where some one murders hundreds of thousands of people just to get a chance to get revenge against the person who beat and tortured your loved one to death. Then call it a day right when you get a chance to kill them. Cause 1001 bodies is too many. Not to mention why would ellie drop everything to go murder this person not once but twice. Risking her life, jeopardizing her relationship, and threatening retaliation on every one she loved. Makes no sense. Expand

As a fan of the original game, what made that game amazing was the chemistry between Joel and Ellie, who he took under his wing and basically taught her the essentials of survival in the world they lived in. Seeing him go from seeing her as a pest to loving her like his own daughter was the climax of that game. Last of Us 2 did a disservice to Joel and to Ellie. Sure, the story was decent, as it kind of reminded me of a movie sort of plot but it just doesn’t work. I don’t think anyone wanted to play as Abby, like she killed the main character of the first game! Were we supposed to feel sorry for Abby, and playing as her was supposed to justify her actions?? I felt it was a waste of time. In the end, Abby gets what she wants and Ellie is left alone without Joel, Dina and is left to wonder by herself. There is no closure for her and it was just a sad way to end the game after so much was put into Ellie and Joel in the first game. Just wow Expand

I don’t understand how people dislike the story- maybe because Part 1 was so complete and solid, it didn’t necessarily Need a sequel.

I understand people’s critique of it being a simple revenge story. But after Joel’s death, I wanted revenge too. I hated Abby.

But then something changed, when I played as Abby. I just wanted to stop playing so neither of them died. But I didn’t stop. And Naughty Dog rewarded me with a beautifully bleak story.

The gameplay is solid, if not a little too familiar for its own good. But the story was perfect in my opinion.

I'm not saying that you don't have to play this game, but you might want to get a refund after doing it. In this aspect TLOU2 Is pretty comparable to Warcraft III: Reforged in terms of how "well" it does his job at giving us hopes and dreams just to be crushed by unfinished works and promises that couldn't be delivered. So to summarize up I just wanna say ND=Blizzard+Activision.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game is amazing. hands down. don’t believe the score bombers and the bad takes. play it yourself and make up your own mind, but know that this game is a beautiful, complex, and nuanced successor to the first game. tlou2 takes a very hard, bleak look at humanity at first, since it’s a game integral on survival at all costs, in a brutal world that is no longer nor will ever be the same. that means everyone will do what it takes, sometimes at the cost of others, but they each have their own motives, agendas, histories. this game shows that while things are violent and cruel, there is also deep passion and love and beauty to be found, too, even in the people you think you’re supposed to hate. many of these bad reviews just cannot grasp the thought that ellie, grown up from the first game, turned out like everyone else she’s ever known, and that means vindication and revenge and just human cruelty. this game makes you angry, makes you cry, makes you happy and torn and just in wonder at everything. the sceneries are amazing, and a world overtaken with 25 odd years of plant growth and decay, are just astounding. games have come so far with the visual effects and lighting and sound and action, and tlou2 is the prime example of mastery in the craft. please play this game. guard your heart a little, but make no assumptions about the story or the characters. it’s all handled beautifully, and i really believe this game is one of the best. The Last of Us 2 tries too hard to be unique and moving to the point whee it all feels basic. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming and then making you play half the game as the person who kills him is a daring move that I admire, but it ultimately falls flat. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming and then making you play half the game as the person who kills him is a daring move that I admire, but it ultimately falls flat. It just was not executed very well. Killing Joel was a decent move that I probably would have done if I were writing the story for this game, but once again, the execution was just nonexistent. To be completely honest, I think that this story would've ended better with Ellie being killed off. The backlash from fans would probably be even worse, and the current ending is getting way more hate than it deserves, but in a game that is meant to be depressing and hopeless, I honestly think it wouldn't be a terrible move. Naughty Dog should probably strongly consider making Tlou 3, and yes, they should have Ellie die at the end. It would be the much needed closure that this franchise needs and would help capture the feel of what this post-apocalyptic world really is about. Speaking of this post-apocalyptic world, everything just felt off about it in this game. The first game really felt like the player was doing every thing to survive in this zombie-like outbreak, but in this game the infected seem like they're in the game just because they had to due to the continuity from the first. When I think about this game, I barely even remember that the infected were in it, when they were.... the literal reason for this entire scenario. So is this game a total fail? No. It has some of the best visuals in the history of gaming, and the gameplay (while remaining the same throughout and being almost being a replica of the first game) is still extraordinary and the enemy AI was some of the smartest I've ever seen in a video game. So is the story that bad? For a triple A game, it's very good. For a Last of Us game, it is god awful. Probably my biggest gripe with the story is that this just didn't feel like it was the Last of Us. Ellie, who is my favorite character in gaming history, didn't really even feel like Ellie to me. Everything just felt off in this game, and I think most people agree. So as a standalone game, this game is an 8-10. As a Last of Us game, it is a 3-5. The reviews for this game are absolute nonsense from both sides of the coin. There are tons of people who had in their mind they were going to like the game no matter what, and there were tons of people who were going to hate the game no matter what (mostly because of the leaks.) And yes there are quite a few political points raised in this game; not as many as people make it sound like, but enough to make quite a few people upset, especially when pretty much all of it is completely unnecessary (for example, bigot sandwich.) The lgbt+ representation in this game is something almost unheard of in very popular games, so yes, a lot of lgbt+ people are going to be a little more inclined to say this game is very good. On the other side, you have people who do not like the lgbt+ representation, so they will be more inclined to say the game is not very good. In conclusion, while this game tries to be something to be more special than it is and comes across as a little pretentious, and has a somewhat lackluster plot, it's still one of the best games out there, and most of the reviews (good and bad) are biased. But as a TLOU fan, I was extremely disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some of you guys might not like the story of the last of us part 2 but we have to appreciate the work they put on this game. Honestly I liked how they presented the story. It wasn’t the story that I wanted but that’s the story they wanted to tell and they did a great job on that. Here comes my thoughts on the story: It looks like they wanted to show us that the story of Ellie and Joel isn’t the only one we should care about. What I mean by that is they wanted us to see that there are tons of stories in that post apocalyptic world. It looks like they tried to take away the main focus from Ellie and Joel and that’s where the problem begins. They put way too much focus on Abby’s side of story. I think the reason behind that is they wanted us to accept Abby and her behavior which makes no sense to me. Like, come on! You guys made a whole game dedicated to Joel and Ellie (part 1) and we literally loved them. I don’t want to accept and like Abby. I just want to destroy her! She might be cool and all but at the end of the day SHE KILLED JOEL. Don’t miss understand me. I’m not saying that we should take out all parts we played as Abby. But we played Abby too much. Almost half of the game was dedicated to Abby. They made her one of the main characters but it didn’t worked out for most of us. It should have been a true and successful vengeance story in my opinion. Now let’s talk about some other things. The gameplay was perfectly designed and balanced. The animations were astonishing. Game physics were 10/10. Designs and graphics were the best in history of gaming. Music was amazing. The only downside was the story but for me the last of us part 2 is still a masterpiece. Thank you Naughty Dog for giving us this amazing piece of art. Expand

The Last of Us (2013) is one of my favourite, if not my absolute favourite, games of all time. It had a phenomenal cast, writing, score, world-building, and atmosphere. However, the now 7 year old game is a rough play these days - the gameplay which was mediocre at the time, feels very dated by today's standards.

Enter The Last of Us Part II. The game is an improvement in every single way. The cast is even better, with incredible performances from old favorites and new characters. Whilst the first game had strong methodology to its storytelling, the actual story itself was fairly predictable and didn't really tread new ground; the presentation of that story was what carried it. TLoU2 tells a more unique story - one that is less relatable than the father-daughter dynamic explored in the first, but less 'safe' and more intriguing as a result. I fell in love with the new characters, who are incredibly well written and performed. Then there's the gameplay. This game plays very, very well. The gunplay is weighty and satisfying, and the melee combat is brutal and less button-mashy than the first game, with a much welcomed dodge mechanic. Movement if fluid, and the transition between character animations is buttery smooth. I often found myself breaking stealth intentionally just so I could experience the thrill of gunfights, although often the gunfights began simply because the AI is a lot better at noticing you than in most games. I have nothing but praise for this redesigned AI - they can spot you from further away than you'd expect, and just because you're crouching in tall grass doesn't make you invisible, but I never felt like the AI was cheating either. Once combat begins, they push you aggressively, coordinating with each other to flank you from multiple angles which makes combat genuinely challenging, and not by simply making them deal lots of damage or being blessed with divine accuracy. They call out one another's names when a comrade falls, and writhe in pain on the floor when your hunting rifle takes an arm off.

Naughty Dog has created a triumph of a game, and one that has very quickly dethroned the previous game and God of War as my favourite game of all time. I thoroughly look forward to the release of the multiplayer, whenever that may be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all hello videogames fans, i hope u get the time to read my review and not pull the trigger to quickly, also sorry if my english is bad (not a native speaker). Secondly I would like to talk about how much saddens me seeing in every place the comments for both lovers of the game and people that dislike it, being targeted as swj a**hole for ones and as homophobic, transphobic, misogynist...for others, is really sad that a video game has been reduced to this arguments for defending and at the same time criticize it. I am one that without any leaks played the game and personally wanted to like it but couldnt bring myself to it. First of all voice acting (im my country at least), graphics, ambientation... is perfect and I think that nobody can doubt that, it makes the game beautifull and lively. But not everything that shines is gold, at least that was the case for me. Yeah, I'm going to talk about the story, in this regard the first part of the game was "good" but lest not go ahead of ourselves and start from the beggining, the dead of someone so loved and controversial at the same time by everybody in this universe. I must say, that I don't consider Joel a hero, for me was a morally grey character that had done a lot of bad things, and that with the ending of the first game u could say perfectly that he was a selfish, lets say "father". Indeed he was, but I think that a great number people in that situation would have done the same thing, and I think, that because of that so many people could relate to him in some way. Now to the last of us part 2, so many people knew that joel was going to die, but that way of dying... I know what ND tries to do, killing someon so loved in such a brutal way just to cause hate in the people and give more sense to the revenge plot point but...why cause so much hate for that action and then put abby as the "morally white" character in the history? For me personally, it doesnt have any sense. I've read people saying, "If u think that is because u haven't understand the game, this a dark history with grey characters" I buy you the is a dark history (the sadness, emptiness and hate that I've felt is there to prove it) but the approach that they take is not based in grey moral characters, u have a dark one, Ellie in her quest for revenge, and a good/light one with Abby trying really hard that players like her, when is really dificult, again in a subjective and personal way at least, to do it. Abby is represented as an animal, child helper (that scene in the campment with the kids, trying to make everyone look good, and what a coincidence, being also in the scene that guy that spits on joel) trying to give u the impression that "hey, they are also a good person". As I was saying I couldn't feel that much empathy. This was also caused by, what I consider a bad choice of revenge for Abby. Don't get my wrong, I understand that Abby wants to revenge his father, that medic that u kill in the first game, that for everyone until this game wasn't more than a random npc. In that regard the same history could have been applyed to any of the fireflies memebers relatives, friends, etc. and I consider that is not well developed, they try to put everything togehther in this game (Abby's and Dad's past, which was someone that was a generic npc, and at the same time feel sorry for her despite how bad the game started with Abby). About Ellie part, I must say that it was alright, I know that the seek of revenge can make the best person become the worst against your enemies, but she was really rude to people that was close to her. And the ending for me is the worst part, the only person that lose everything is Ellie (yeah, I know, revenge is bad) but the case is, people try to defend this as "Abby also lose everything", I consider that she is the only of the 2 that, yeah Ellie and company kills all of her friends, but she has the posibility of a future with Leve, taking care of her and having an new "meaning" in life making Ellie at my eyes the only one that in the end lose everything and doesnt even have the option to avenge Joel after having lost herself through that revenge travel, and that really leaves me hearthbroken, sad and empty giving me a really bad taste and making that all the good points that the game has perish with it.
Now a few things that I didnt wrote and I would like to put them over here:
-Didn't talk about gameplay, is good (IA sometimes a bit easy in hardest difficulty, being able to stealth in front of enemys, maybe bugged I don't know) but pretty much the same as in the first one, liked the improvments with the silencer, weapon customization and crafting and the hand to hand combat.
    - Fireflies and trying to make you sympatethic for them, when they are pretty much the same as Joel, if not even more grey than he was, kidnapping people for the shake of finding the cure.
I hope that if u buy the game you enjoy it, sadly I couldn't bring myself to like it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought this game for Joel and Ellie and both characters were destroyed in part 2. The way Joel died was moronic, Joel from part 1 would never reveal his identity nor follow a bunch of strangers he just met. The fact that he was killed within the first 2 hours of the game and then you’re forced to play as the very person who killed him for 10 hours, without any context or who this person was is just a horrible idea and made me feel sick. Some of Ellie’s actions don’t make much sense either, including the ending. It just seems that writers came up with an idea and wrote a script without considering if the existing characters fit into the story. The new characters that were introduced are impossible to like even though the game wants you to sympathise with them (I’m talking about Abby – she’s a badly written character and when in a second she turned back on WLF and started killing her friends I could believe this!). I did like Dina and Jesse but obviously Jesse as one of very few characters I liked was killed like a dog (same as Joel). Wanted to see more Tommy as well and thought I would get a chance to play as him (instead I got Abby…) but they completely gave up on him as all characters from part 1.

The world looks nice, graphics are great, voice acting too. When it comes to gameplay, NPCs – it’s just slightly better than part one and I was expecting a bit more but did enjoy it in general.

I love part 1 and played it 15 times but part 2 I’m never playing again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. QGN:

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game yesterday. Damn, what a **** it was at the end.
    But first of all:

    + Graphics
    + Environmentdesign
    + Sounddesign
    +/- Gameplay

Those are the good parts of Tlou2. It genuinly is fun, for me at least, to be in this beautifully crafted world. I had my fair share of fun scavanging trough it. And I liked the violent nature of it.

BUT: This game has the worst writing in a tripple A videogame, of this size, I've seen in a long time. And I mean it.

The structure is all over the place, but just not there, where it needs to be.
Most of the story is told in flashbacks. Understandable. Simply because there is nothing there to tell in this game besides Ellie taking out all of Abbys friends one after another. And then you play the game from Abbys perspective, where this game spends in it's last 10+ hours to force you to see how good of a person Abby as a human beeing is and let's you go from scene to scene estabishing that. ALL THE WAY. It's so bad, that you can actually tell in every scene "aah, we safe the zebra now, because Naughty Dog wants us to like Abby." or "ooh, we are beeing nice to strangers now, because ND wants to establish Abby as the good guy now." You can see right trough it and this is not how those tricks in storytelling work. Especially not when it's like hammered in your head constantly.

As for all the characters in the game: You don't care about them!
Simply because you can't get a grip of them. They change their mindset anytime, they behave stupid and predictable. And they all just die after a couple of minutes of screentime without having anything meaningful to say.
And the best part is: Some time after their death you get even more flashbacks to show how sad all of this is.

This game and it's message are not profound. It is stupid and/or meaningless and is handled not in the best fashion.

If this is the new "standard" for videogames, like a lot of critics of tlou2 say, then I go back to comicbooks.

Poucos momentos do jogo você realmente começa a conhecer Ellie.

-The first game was awesome for it's time , a nice father-daughter story in the middle of an apocalypse trying yo survive and make allies. Even the Prequel DLC had a good story too, everyone loved those campaigns still to this day.

So... what's the problem with this "sequel" ?
The first minutes are good and shows us how the protagonists re living after the first game but in a couple of hours.... boom
They kill the most beloved character of the franchise, because of a "girl"? Who wanted revenge against him for killing his father in the first game.

So the game make us want to take revenge against that girl and his crew and we do.
We kill almost every friend of her as she kills some of out allies too, and in the end...
    WE FORGIVE HER ??!!!
I don't know who exactly was the dumbass who write this ending (actually i think we all do) but .You makes take revenge against all of her friends just to make us forgive Her for killing Ellie's father figure ?
That's the most stupid plot i've ever seen .
If you're gonna make a revenge story then we should, idk....
    ACTUALLY TAKE REVENGE

Also , the journalists try to defend this game with one single argument: " If you don't like the game then you are all homophobic "
    Seriously People ?
The game has GOOD graphics and GOOD music.
But come on , The Story ending it's Stupid

Take as Example for a Revenge story the Destiny 2 Forsaken plot:
They kill a beloved friend of ours and we swear to take revenge with our hands. So we go and kill The Barons( The ones who helped the antagonist to kill that friend ) , then in the end our character and an ally are in front of him about to kill him , but he asks
" The light between light and dark is so thin, which side are you on ? "
That makes our character doubt but we stil point at him with our gun , in the end , the screen goes black and we hear a gunshot.

We don't know if we did kill him or our ally did, but we know he is now dead , and that gives us a relief completing our Revenge Crusade , we later have to deal with the consequences of killing him but it's still a good plot.

I don't know why ND had to make such an bad ending. It could 've been a good game ...
    So sad ended this way

PD : Was that s3x scene so necesary for the plot of the game ?
So sony doesn't allow anime tiddies but allows this kind of scene ? WTF is wrong with them ?

I have been a fan for a long time
I used to think that every games that your studio made is a masterpiece and is worth every dollars spent
When the leak spreads, i simply couldnt believe it, but i didnt care and waited until the game eventual release date...
I was so happy when my copy arrives and i get to play it from start to finish.
    I will give my verdict
The story is full of plot holes, the characters didnt act like their own self, no character development, story is questionable and pointless....
And lastly you killed off a character that majority of fans loves and he is the reason that many wants to play the sequel, im fine with him dying, but the way he died is an insult to him, Joel from the first game wouldnt simply trust strangers and let them in their base armed to the core..so he is very out of character here and to add more insult.... Neil Druckkman himself mocapped himself as manny just to spit on Joels corpse...that is a disespect on another whole level, and lastly you too released this on fathers day....
Congratulation ND you just killed a beloved game.
And this is the last game that i'll buy from this studio
    Good day.

This game can be summed up as "the most beautiful person you will ever see... until they start to speak." it is hands down the most beautiful game you will ever play today, but this is a story based game and the story is where this game starts to make you want to gag. The story gives you a feeling of horror in the same way watching documentaries on WW2 Germany does, except imagine that in these documentaries there were massive plot holes and character inconsistencies. both seeing the atrocities of WW2 and playing The Last of Us part II inspires the same feeling of "how could someone do something like this". characters wildly swing between emotions, they do things that you would not imagine them to do, and not in a way that is "oh they are so brave taking these risks" but more, "what has gotten into them". the game tries so hard to be dark and ask intelligent questions of its audience but the writing is clearly not intelligent enough to handle it properly. all in all I rate a 0 out of 10 because no amount of incredible graphics and level design can bring me to ever want to play The Last of Us part II again. I was not allowed to post this unless i gave the game a 10 out of 10 so pretend my rating is a 0 out of 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My understanding of the game is that it is not actually trying to teach us that revenge is wrong, but instead, showing how it affects Ellie and how she doesn't know how to let it go since she is still very young and has born in a violent world which no one have taught her the principles we know. We in real life are used to such stories and most of us know what is wrong and what's not, it doesn't happen to Ellie because in her world she don't have what we have in ours. That is why I don't think the game was teaching us that revenge is not good, we already know that, but showing how a young character in such environment copes with all of those feelings.

Talking about the plot points and decisions, I wouldn't change what happened but I'd change how it happened. For example: Giving Joel more screen time; developing better the Abby's hunt for Joel; some of the conveniences that happens on the script and MAYBE add the option of choose what it would happen to Abby, just to satisfy the hunger of those who wants to see her dead, even though it won't be canon if a part 3 comes out.

Anyway, I still liked and enjoyed the game even if I do not agree with how some things happened on the story. The game is definitely worth playing, and honestly it don't deserve such low rates and hating.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
