The game has a great graphics, no loading between the chapters, an unforgettable music, best mo cap and voice acting performance, and an amazingly fun gameplay all which is wasted for the poor story telling, some reading this review may say all this can't be ruined by story but all I say is wait until you play it yourself you'll understand how bad it is that you don't wanna continue the game from a point.
I just don't understand what was all that we got in the first game? what was that for? all that character development all that bounding to those characters was for what? to just say hey we made you love them now we destroy them, it was so sadistic move, it was't just a bad ending, it was abusing and insulting for me, a big fan of the game and almost every other fans I know.
I'm deeply sad for what has happened to this great game so many different ways to continue the story to please the fans and create something unique but, too bad they chose the way to insult the fans and destroy the game in a unique way.
Naughty Dog has now a way to go to regain it's fame.

Absolute garbage. Gameplay, graphics, and audio are amazing but how can you have such a horrible story in a story driven game? I’m going to sell my game for cheaper so people don’t have to waste $60. Complete waste of money but more importantly a complete waste of time you’ll never get back.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Breathtaking graphics. Fantastic animations and physics but the story and new characters are trash. The story is just rinse and repeat all the way through. Even using, not one , but two pregnancies to try and pull on your heartstrings. The only decent scenes are the flashbacks with Joel. It recreates some of the magic of the first game but then soon rips it away and leaves you missing Joel again. Then they have the audacity to make you play as the murderer who killed him. Just plain awful compared to the first game. Expand

Great game. Not many games have such a strong emotional gameplay. Every character seems like unique person, not just a nameless thug. And the visuals are absolutely stunning, from character models to cloth and rope physics to lights. Simply put, it is a masterpiece.

First off I loved the first game so most of the complaints I get as far as the story goes. So if you’re looking to recapture the feelings of the first game you will be disappointed. I completely understand the anger for this game. But giving this game a 0 is doing your fellow gamers an injustice. So is saying it’s a 10 to counter all the zeros. I played this game to the end and took a day or so to digest this so I can give this game an honest review. Ok so the story does little to no justice to the characters of the first game. The very beginning is a nice tie in to the first game I thought it gave a nice follow up to the end of the other game ( before the major event that has everyone upset). The flashback scenes scattered throughout the game at points I felt also worked well with the first game’s story. The rest however was hard to wrap my head around. I chose to look at the bulk of the game as a dream sequence or an alternate universe lol. (It worked for me that way) Playing that way or not having an attachment to the first game and it’s characters It’s actually a good game. The story on its own I thought was well done overall and wouldn’t get the hate I feel if this wasn’t part 2 of a beloved game. Won’t spoil anything but the second half is a complete shift. So if you look at it as they are intending it’s quite interesting and makes you think. Which is something I can honestly appreciate. Graphics are amazing everyone seems to agree there. You can see the amount of work that was put into this game for sure. Found myself admiring the littlest things. Gameplay is good very familiar if you played the first game (with improvements). Definitely a violent game but I don’t feel it’s brutal just to be brutal. It works with the concept of the story they are trying to tell. Gotta say overall I did enjoy this game just for different reasons and not to the extent of the first game. I can recommend playing it IF you can look at it the way I did or don’t have a major attachment to the characters. It’s just really hard for a lot of fans of the original to get past that one scene early on and understandably so. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just beat the game today. I feel so sad. I feel so depressed. I feel miserable. I feel like there’s a whole in my chest. Rely on the reviews played by actual people who’s played the game. I’ve been thinking about this game for the past couple days playing it. I’m still processing the game. There’s a difference between a bad game and a game you don’t like. It’s not a bad game. It’s a game I don’t like (not like terrible) but because it’s so miserable. It was meant to be like that. It was meant to made you feel. I feel like I was on a roller coaster of feels while playing this game. No game has ever made me feel like that. It’s not perfect. It’s a game you aren’t meant to like. I’m still processing the ending. I feel very incomplete. I’ve seen a lot of people say the ending isn’t what they wanted and I totally understand that. There’s a loop of getting revenge, losing things, going back out and getting revenge and losing more. There was a cycle and Ellie finally broke the cycle. But at what cost? I want to be happy for her because she grew as a character but I can’t because she lost everything. Lost everything to get to where she was.
Abby’s part of things: I never liked her. Ellie’s part of things at the beginning was perfect. A perfect 10/10 but when we played as Abby I lost interest. I didn’t like her. The tie in was kinda cool. The fact that you shot someone random in the first game turned out to have such a HUGE part in the next was cool. At the same time I didn’t care about her. They introduced her so early in the game killing our favorite character. I don’t know why they thought we’d like her or even care about her. I couldn’t sympathize with her. I understood her but I didn’t care. It was too long with her. You built such a strong connect with Joel and Ellie in the first and with Ellie in the second. You kill Joel at the start and play as Ellie for only a half of the game, I didn’t like that. I feel like a separate game with Abby would’ve been cool but don’t throw her into this game.
With Joel it was tough. I understand a lot of people were mad with him dying so early, me included, the way he died. We didn’t get time to explore his and Ellie’s relationship and figure things out. It didn’t give Ellie time to mourn, to really understand what had happened. I would’ve liked to have seen that explored a lot more. His death could’ve been so much more. He was the hero of the last game and we lost him immediately.
This was a sad, gloomy, miserable game. It scared me and depressed me. It was hard to play it for an extended period of time because it was so depressing. It was a great game. It was supposed to be a game you didn’t like. I would knock off a couple points for the Abby crap and killing Joel so early I’d give it a 7 or 7.5. But it’s the last of us so 8/10. Don’t listen to reviews. Play it on your own. Play it on your own time.

And then it illustrates the things a revenge plot can do to you and the people you love. We had to go through death and loss and at the end nothing was left for us. That is the point. Revenge does nothing in the end but leave you with emptiness and regret. Even I who originally wanted Abby dead after seeing the whole story did not want it anymore by the end. I see so many people complaining and moaning and whining about SJW and Trans **** I cannot believe there are so many bigoted people. You all can go shove it, this game and community does not need you and your hate. While I do have grievances they are very small. This game was an amazing and tragic journey. The story is beautiful, and brutal. It got me thinking more than once about what I was doing, and what I did up to that moment.

Game mechanics - 10/10. Improved them from the previous game. Fighting is very fun, the amount of settings is unbelievable, including a multi layered difficulty system (select hard enemies, easy resources, for example).

The gameplay is an improvement from the first game which is a lot to say and some of the new mechanics (eg rope) are well es executed. I understand why the story might be divisive particularly with the shocking beginning that might upset fans of the first one but *spoiler alert* Joel’s adventure was complete and this was a story of what comes after. This game also teaches something important which is that in many situations there isn’t such thing as a good and bad character, it’s the circumstances that drive each to make decisions. I thought I would hate using Abby but by the end of the game I found myself struggling To decide for whom I was cheering. Well done naughty dog, this was a bold move but you pulled it off. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing through the entire game, and watching a full play through, I have come to write my honest review of this game. The Last of us was a legendary game. It still is today. The Last of us Part II, in my opinion, doesn’t really live up to the first game. The gameplay, most of the story, graphics, cutscenes, fighting animations, and overall the pace of the game was good. I enjoyed the music too. Excellent soundtrack. The parts of the game that are what really got me to give this rating are only a couple, but also very key things. First of all, the ending was horrible. It wasn’t bad, it was just so sad. I feel like the game just dragged on and didn’t do any justice in the end. It was a terribly sad ending. Ellie suffered so much throughout the game. In the end, she couldn’t even play the guitar. She never killed Abby. Which literally was the point of the game, or so the story made it seem that way, and it never happened. Secondly, playing as Abby. I hated that. After watching Joel die a horrible death at her hand, I was upset. Like literally upset. As if I had an argument with someone I hated, and I lost. Playing as her after that scene was just a punch in the gut. Also, the first fight between her and Ellie, where we beat Ellie up, was just not fun at all. Knowing what Abby did just made it so much harder emotionally. Another thing about Abby as well, going back and forth between her and Ellie messed the time lines up for me. At the end of the game there wasn’t an indication it had been a while and that Ellie got to Abby after Abby had been worked to the bone for a while. It was just like bam here she is a while later. The ending was so bad. Even writing this review I’m thinking of how sad and awful it was. Come on Naughtydog. I don’t even wanna see a part 3 now if it’s coming. One thing I did wanna touch on is the lesbian relationship that Ellie and Dina share. I think that’s really interesting and I liked it. It was a nice twist to the game and I am perfectly fine with lesbian characters. Who really cares. I mean they raised a cute baby. It was cool to see the family aspect. In a way, the game shows us that even after something as bad as a zombie apocalypse, there’s still love of all kinds. It was a good touch in my opinion. Not needed, but good. But overall, I rate this game a 4 out of 10. While there are more positives than negatives listed in this review, in my mind, those 2 negatives outweigh the positives. They really brought the game down for me. I almost put the game down when I played as Abby. That was the main problem for me. Like what Last of us fan wants to play as the murderer of Joel. What person wants to play a character who murders there favorite character in any other video game. Not many people. You could argue it was important to see Abby’s side of things, and yes that’s a valid argument. But I still don’t care enough to want to play as her. Anyway, the game wasn’t the worst. I’m glad it came out. It was an emotional rollercoaster for sure. Expand

From the beginning to the end, Naughty Dog takes us into a story that is poignant, violent, but in the end, deeply human. Few games are able to make us live such a jumble of emotions... To embody, not just one character but two, including Abby, is without a doubt a bold idea, but it's a successful gamble that works perfectly.

I did, and while the story definitely takes me to places I wasn’t anticipating, it was pretty masterful in my opinion. There are a couple of complaints I had about the story, but overall it delivered even if it wasn’t always comfortable or easy (and art in my opinion should rarely be comfortable or easy).

Technically, the game is a masterpiece. I only noticed two minor bugs and had one crash on my play through. It was gorgeous, well acted, and unsettlingly brutal. The last of us part I was one of my favorite games of all time, and this compares very favorably. A hero in one persons story is a villain in someone else’s, and that’s not just life but also the story that TLOU 2 tells extremely well. I actually created an account just to review this game because it is in my opinion being so unfairly maligned. If you go into it with an open mind, you won’t regret it.

I really feel if you leave this game frustrated on debating who the villain is, you've possibly missed the point of the game. Maybe that's pretentious to say, but contrary to what we were prompted to think the game was about, I don't think this game ever was 100% about vengeance and hate. This left me the same way the first game did - constantly thinking about it days after completion.
I will say the length felt very dragged at times, this felt due to incredible amounts of gameplay without sufficient breathers. This could have allowed more chance for getting to know characters a bit deeper or have a clearer sense on how Ellie was feeling. This felt minor to me by the end of the game, and all this said the gameplay is incredible. I also feel no matter how you feel on the game, we could all agree the music and sound design are remarkable.
This game is going to keep people divided for a long time, I don't think I could ever change the minds of those who hated it. I do feel though if you can, don't go in with expectations or any ideals in mind - they will most certainly not be met.

Didn't think they'd top the first game, but they did. A beautiful swan song for the PS4, just like the first one was for the PS3. When the dust settles, 10 years from now, the consensus will be that this game is a masterpiece, which it is. Groundbreaking often doesn't look like groundbreaking when it happens, but this is it.

I really loved the precious game but iy's so unfortunate to see such enjoyable gameplay and the huge plot holes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually, this game might be one of the greatest games I have ever played, right up there with Red Dead Redemption 2. However, the story Last of Us 2 took was absolutely garbage and included one of the most unsatisfying endings to a video game I have ever seen. Half the game is played by Joel’s killer and although the game tries to get the player to sympathize with her, it executed it poorly. The ending is also terrible as Ellie never even fulfills her revenge mission. The entire game is centered around Ellie gaining revenge for Joel’s death and for what? To let Abby go just because they need to “end the cycle of revenge”? Also, the trailers for the game intentionally deceive gamers to believe Joel is alive throughout the game when in fact they are all flashbacks. The only way this story could’ve been salvaged was to let the player play as Tommy instead of Abby and actually fulfilled Ellie’s mission. Instead, Ellie lost her father figure, partner, and two fingers to not even avenge Joel’s death. To think half of this game isn’t even played as Ellie (but as Joel’s murderer) is so unsatisfying. People who defend this garbage story line will say that you need to look at Abby’s POV and that “you just don’t get it” or make some ridiculous claim that you don’t like the game because of its inclusion of LGBT characters. That definitely is not the problem, the story is just legitimately terrible. Expand

And when I say by the time I finished the game I wanted to rip my finger nails out, I mean it. The story is completely redundant in it's morals, The new character and antagonist Abby does not have good or valid character building and I don't like how the producers expect us to like her and take her side. There was a story we didn't necessarily didn't get to see with Joel and Ellie, y'know that we kinda built since the first game to just have it torn away and be something we'll never have. Most character death's besides a really big one and someone else just don't feel emotional at all. What the hell Naughtydog? I want my money back! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just gonna say, this game is great graphically and is a definite upgrade from the first game. However, everything else gameplay wise is still the same. Only thing I could see that was added was the ability to go prone and sprint jump. Everything else is just ehh and even the AI from the first game was a lot more aggressive as in TLOU2 the enemies literally forget about you and have a tendency to go into hiding if they find you. I was really looking forward to this game and would have never thought that The Last of Us would even get a sequel. I was holding off on buying this game and saw my brother play it so I can get a feel for how the story plays out for the first couple of hours. Though well into hour 2, I made my mind up that I would much rather look into using my $60 elsewhere. It wasn't about Joel dying, it was how he went out and it was just the most idiotic and uncharacteristic way to go out. Then Naughty Dog expects us to play as the killer half way into the game, which is just something that turns me off. I don't wanna be forced to play with someone that I completely and utterly don't care about and have shoved down our throats as the main character. I could care less about the backstory for Abby, she is a terribly written character and don't see why having the doctor be tied into this story. The ending in itself is just atrocious. I was looking forward to having Abby killed but instead we have an ending of Ellie letting her go and not getting revenge. This game is in the end pointless and the journey was pointless. If Abby was at least killed, I would have given this a slightly higher score but my rating stands. In my eyes, this game is not canon and I am still waiting on the real Last of Us Part II. Expand

The first game was a masterpiece, a "once in a lifetime" story full of twists and turns, characters you loved and an emotional story that will have you on the edge of tears. This game has none of that.

First let me point out what i did like.

The graphics are amazing, they aren't mind-blowing like some have claimed but they are still pretty awesome, the sound is good, voice acting is as good as its ever been ,even if many of the VO artists have be obnoxiously rude to the fan base. The soundtrack is the best part of the game and the environments are some of the most immersive and detailed if ever seen. That folks is wher my praise ends. Because the games director was and is more concerned with pushing social ideologies than he is telling a competent story. Hes more willing to listen to a certain ideolog/professional victim , that shall remain nameless, than he is the fan base hes allegedly trying to make this game for.

This game doesn't make it 30 min in before issues like race and sexuality are put to the for front. Its obnoxious and distracts from a story that, now that I think of it, is probably worth being distracted from. Character motivations change on a dime. Its quite jarring to have a character be completely for one option one moment, and then less than five min later be for the exact opposite option for no other reason that the story needs it. This game relies heavily on flashbacks so much so that huge chunks of the story are told out of order like a Tarintino movie. I cant give any examples with out giving away spoilers, but the plot in this game has more holes than a cellulose sponge. The characters you loved from the first game are completely different than what they where in the first game and the new characters are so boring and poorly written that by the end of the game I didn't like any of them. Most of them are so awful that as I write this review I cant recall any of their names. The ending to this game was not only very abrupt but so bad that it felt like they stole it from a Z grade fanfiction. But as bad as this game is that's not the worst part about this whole mess. The worst part is Naughty Dog and sonys reaction to the story leaks.

See about a month before the game released the entire story leaked online, and naturally people didn't like what they saw and took to twitter and youtube to vent their dislike with the story. Even though it fell completely under the fair use provisions of The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Sony and Naughty Dog began to give false statements on legal forms in the form of DMCA take down notices. These notices lost a lot of people a lot of money and risked taking away their livelihoods just because naughty dog cant take criticism.

In the end this game is a huge mess and disappointment. Terrible story and game play that operates on a repetitive loop. A game made by horrible people who care more about pushing a social and political narrative than making a quality product.

Avoid at all costs, thers many indi devs that make much better game that deserve your money much more than these people do.

Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the original game. I have Ellie's tattoo on my own forearm and TLOU2 was my most anticipated game of the decade. I am absolutely in love with TLOU.

First of all, TLOU2 is NOT a 0/10, nor is it a 10/10. The truth is somewhere in the middle. It is no question, this game does not even compare to the first game - a true 10/10, in my opinion. First, the good: Naughty Dog achieved absolutely incredible visuals with this game. It is beautiful. They should also be given credit for polishing the original's gameplay, it is very fun. At the very least, before I get into what makes this game disappointing, I will say that I give them credit for at least trying something risky, the only problem is that the execution and experience was poor.

So what did Naughty Dog do poorly? This game made many mistakes. The first and largest is that you are forced to play as a new character that is extremely unlikable and this lasts for approximately half of the game's length. You are switched to control this character during the game's climax, which kills the momentum of the story. Most players that I know tried to rush through this slow paced "sequence" in order to get back to Ellie's gameplay, only to find that they must play around 10-12 hours with this new unlikeable character in order to get back to the game's climax. THIS right here is what kills the entire experience of this game. Everyone that I know in my personal life that played this game, 4 people, found the second half of the game to be absolutely dreadful and not worth it. I absolutely hated this experience too. I stomached this sequence just go see the ending (obligated to see it through out of my love for the first game), but I can say, without spoiling anything, that I don't personally believe that the experience was worth it. I give this game a 6 ONLY because the first half of this game was genuinely thrilling and an absolute blast, despite questionable narrative choices, which I was able to get over-- at first. There are other issues in the second half and near-end such as constant geographical and chronological shifts, the game is all over the place, and it never really finds its footing. The pacing is a bizarre mess. They also sacrifice smart storytelling for embarrassingly convenient plot advancements. For example, otherwise smart characters make simple and unbelievable mistakes such as dropping literal maps that lead their enemies directly to their base. There are many examples, even late term pregnant women decide that they are fit for militaristic combat, putting them in places where they obviously should not be. These things are unrealistic and just dumb, to be honest. Characters are constantly making out-of-character decisions. No matter how badly I want to like this game, I can't fool or lie to myself, and I have to admit that it just is not that good of a game. I cannot say that I recommend this game, and that breaks my heart to say, after a 7 year wait. But nothing will make the first game any less brilliant.

This is one of the stupidest narratives I've ever encountered in gaming and the way they pull it off makes it even dumber. The game thinks its smart and hypocrites might think it is.(Like its totally cool to kill hundreds of ppl in this game in some of the goriest ways imaginable because this game is against violence.) But in reality it is a tribute to violence, a wolf in sheeps clothing.

The graphics, animation, sound and acting is amazing though. So it's like Speed Racer or Tron:Legacy. A visually stunning product without any merit to its core.

Ok, so there are aspects of the game I enjoyed very much, however the bad outweighs the good. In a narrative driven game like this it should live up to expectations and be the strongest aspect, it is not. This game feels like it was structured out of order and as such can be felt while playing the game. Let me make things clear, the Joel's death early is not why I dislike this game, it's the execution of his death. I take issue with Neil wanting to make a divisive game instead of making one that makes you question things on a compelling level. What annoys me the most is that if the game was rearranged and some of the content was cut it could've been a truly great game. Abby is a character who I genuinely liked aspects of, and if she had her own installment I'd be glad to play it. Unfortunately that isn't the case here, we spend half the game tracking down and killing countless people just to get to Abby, then we're forced to play as her from her perspective, but at this point I don't care for her as a character or her friends we've killed as Ellie. Abby gets some of the best/interesting moments in the game, but I just didn't care. Now to talk about the ending it was terrible. Not because it didn't end on a semi high note like the last game, not because it wasn't a happy ending. It was terrible because it made all your efforts as playing as Ellie COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS. All of those people she killed just to get to Abby only for her to let her go in the end? Most would retort that she only did that because she realized "revenge is wrong" I'd agree with that assessment if Ellie hadn't literately murdered like hundreds of people. I'm not saying killing Abby would make for a better ending, but by the end I felt that the story didn't say anything interesting and absolutely butchered the past characters. Sure Ellie selfishly tried to get revenge again and in the process lost everything, but is that outcome compelling or make you reflect and ponder on the game as a whole? No it doesn't. Before I wrap up I'll quickly touch on the flashback scenes, for Ellie and and Abby they were easily the best written scenes of the entire game, which hearkens back to my point about the game feeling out of order. They failed at making me care for the new characters, failed at creating a great narrative like the last game, and failed at making an interesting and thought provoking ending. On it's own merit it fails and as a sequel it fails. This game just ends up feeling like misery porn with the bleakest ending yet. I recommend NOT playing this game and I for one won't be playing TLOU3. 6/10

I completed the game last night and gave myself a bit of time to reflect on it. It is apparent to me that the people leaving negative reviews either haven’t played the game or are homophobic. Yes there were bits of the story that were upsetting; that is the sign of a good story if it impacts the player. From a gameplay perspective Naughty Dog also should receive credit; they have used modern technology to refine the great gameplay from the first game and build upon it further. Approximately half way through the game an event happens that forces you to adapt and a change the way you play. For an hour or two I was unable to rely on some of the stealth tactics I had been used to up to that point; this kept gameplay fresh and the challenge exciting. Before long I had extra tools at my disposal to play stealthily but in a different manner to the preceding 12 or so hours. The player is put into fresh and new encounters through the course of the game which is no mean feat across it’s run time (I saw credits roll at 25 hours and 53 minutes and collected 198 collectibles). I took a dive straight back in in order to find missing collectibles and achieve that Platinum trophy, which also seems very achievable for anyone. Ignore the low user score, this game is a must play. Expand

The game is masterpiece. It is very good and real not a game but an art object.
I dont want to ruin the plot with spoilers, but it is fantastic story. Quite logical and so on. A little bit too long and gameplay is only 8 not 10, so better to play 2 hours but not whole day as me.

TLOU2 makes you uncomfortable with its decisions, which imo is the best part. You really need to play the game for yourself and go through the ride with an open mind. Questioning all decisions, even from your beloved characters, is part of the game.

The game is excellent. Of course, it is no better than the first part, but no worse. I stop finding out the real community of games. Many people give an assessment without completing the game or without playing it at all. Guys, buy and complete the game and make up your mind...

Okay, I see what you guys tried to say. But you know, the result became a clumsy poor story with broken narrative. Couldn't believe it's done by pro writer who is from the famous TV show. Please do not try to be dogmatic, do not underestimate the players. If you feel like you know something, the players know it as well. I admit the animation and graphic was really well polished though. BigOkay, I see what you guys tried to say. But you know, the result became a clumsy poor story with broken narrative. Naughty dog outdone themselves, I loved the rawness and pure survivor feeling that naughty dog nailed with this one. The game just looks and plays amazing. And somehow you managed to make the story work which i admire you for. A must buy for sure!!!

This game deserves a score less than zero. The aim of the design of this game is just disgusting players.

In war, both sides believes they're the good guys. And TLOU 2 is all about that. It erases boundries of good and evil and shows you that at the end of the day there is a conflict of interests & emotional reactions.

The game makes you question yourself. People don't like that. We want a story with a happy ending. Typical Hollywood approach which built an army of consumers who remind you line of people in Starbucks. These people are not ready for tragic, dark & authentic conversation.

TLOU shows you the nature of a human kind, it shows how ugly we are and how we're not very different from each other. Emotions often take control over rational. It's been that way, it will stay this way.

There is nothing else to say, just play the god damn game

The backlash for this game makes no sense to me. This game for me exceeds almost everything they did in the first game and stands as naughty dogs strongest title to date.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
