This is just the most human game I ever experienced in my life. Those who can't appreciate this game and it's story - are just think there are only good or bad people in real life. We are everything but humans and also, we are just humans with all our actions and feels. Thank you Naughty Dog!

    A very emotional game.

I completed The Last of Us 1 like 5 or 6 years ago. I didn't read any news, leaks, or comments about the sequel going in. So my perspective is completely untainted. I completed The Last of Us 1 like 5 or 6 years ago. I didn't read any news, leaks, or comments about the sequel going in. So my perspective is completely untainted.

At first, I was very shocked and upset about what the devs decided to do to Joel. I didn't have a problem with him dying. He did kill a bunch of innocent people in the first game, so I wasn't surprised karma would bite him eventually. I have a problem with him dying so soon. It's an enormous waste of a character, that was built up so meticulously from the first game. To me, he was the main character. The back bone to the story. I felt they could have done so much more with Joel, before killing him off. Maybe he gets captured, or something like that. Anything to build on his character more, and it could have increased Ellie's desperation and urgency. I felt it was a missed opportunity, story-wise.

After his death, I had a lot of doubts for what they could possibly do to keep me interested. Just like how I can't watch Simpsons without Homer, or Family Guy without Peter. Last of Us without Joel? How? As I progressed, the flashbacks Ellie had of Joel felt absolutely endearing. Bittersweet. A large part of that feeling stems from knowing Joel's gone. It was sad, but in a good way. Kind of like Game of Thrones, minus the ending. People died. It was a tragedy, but it made me love it more. Ellie's flashbacks heightened my need to pursue the killers, and find out why they did it. When I finally got to Abby, I honestly felt a bit sorry for her, after what Ellie did to her friends. At this point, she honestly had nothing. Killing her would have felt empty. I was ready for some answers. Then the game throws me in the shoes of Abby. Instead of a dramatic cutscene, the game put me directly in her shoes so I could see her side. And after seeing it, I completely understand where she's coming from. She went to kill Joel, to avenge her father. A logical reason. Not ethical. But reasonable. I didn't hate Abby anymore. Suddenly, I didn't know whose side I was on. And in the final chapter of the story. The showdown. I was shocked to see the condition Abby was in. I was extremely curious to see how this would affect Ellie's actions. The way it played out was perfect. Heartbreaking. So much emotion evoked in that fight. A fitting climax to the amount of **** that has transpired. By the end, I didn't like Ellie or Abby. They both were flawed. But yet, so human.

And now on to the more technical review...

    Good

    - hand-to-hand combat is good. The enemies attack animation slows down so that I could react with an input in time. This added a reflex test. Unlike a lot of other games where the hand-to-hand combat window was so small that it was usually not possible to react to, and I have to just pre-emptive block, or attack.

    - clickers are so well designed. They make the stealth gameplay so much more tense because you have to walk extra slow behind them, but at the same time you have to make an action quickly when you are within their close proximity or else they will notice you even if you stay still. So it kind of forces you to plan ahead a bit, and when I decide to strike I must go through with it. And if things turn south I have to quickly adapt, either with a stun object, shoot, or run away. In areas with regular infected and clickers, it really adds diversity to the stealth. Infected could see but clickers couldn't, which forced me to use cover cleverly, and choose my targets wisely based on enemy position.

    - the stun and strike combo feel satisfying to land especially when I got it in a tight situation.

    - the distraction to molotov combo is a great alternative to the stealth strats. Since I had to try and gather the infected into a close proximity before I can pull off the group kill. But when I do manage to bait them all together, then Molotov them all, it's a satisfying feeling.

    - the narrative, and voice acting is impeccable. The beginning where Abby and the dude found a city, the story didn't tell me who they were looking for or who Mel was, and what was the history behind these two. It's a mystery that drew me into the story, making me want to find out what what's going on.

    - the balance between defense an offense is perfect. Clickers are one hit KO, and the infected do a decent chunk of damage. So the game does encourage stealth. But if things go south the game also gives ample offensive abilities for me to survive.

    - checkpoints are really well placed. It doesn't bring me back all the way to the beginning but rather the last major encounter which is perfect, because it doesn't forced me to backtrack unnecessary gameplay.

    - I like how for most objects that interact with, my partner automatically chimes in.

For me the best video game of all times. The game with all its facettes is simply amazing. But what really makes a difference, is the emotional experience it creates. Very boldly it teaches a hard and surprising lesson about hatred, revenge and ultimately about the need to forgive - even your worst enemy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a game that you only can criticise if you've completed the story. And that's what have gone wrong. How can people criticise the story when they didn't even know about the ending? Halfway through the game you play as Abby. I hated her as well. But playing as her and revealing that Joel killed her father was mind-blowing. The play style gives a perfect perspective of what Abby has gone through. Abby's father can die but Joel can't? Remember that they are both humans. And the impact of the story is absolutely soul crushing, and that is what a good story does, making an impact. The story is about perspective. Think about what would have happened if part 2 was the same style as the first one. It would be a repetitive mess. I feel bad for the developers seeing all the hate, while they did a fantastic job.

Overall: This game is a well made sequel to one of the best games of all time. It's not a Disney movie for children

-Enemy AI is so good, they will coordinate searches, signal to each other, flank, set up vantage points, lose track of you, you really FEEL like you are being hunted and it is so immersive. The infected are now mixed in with the human enemies to add even more depth to encounters.
-The combat is **** amazing. Every attack is so weighty and visceral, getting shot HURTS, killing enemies is so damn satisfying. No other game even comes close to the immersion of this games combat.

The pacing is perfect. You go from exploring, to a stealth combat encounter, to a chase sequence, to a gunfight, to a story moment and nothing overstays its welcome.

The story is pretty damn good too. The acting performances and dialogue are great as always for Naughty Dog. I really liked the revenge plot turned into humanizing the enemies story that they were going for. I liked that Joel died as a consequence of his actions at the end of the first game. The plot is all about consequences and I was into it.

I'm disappointed so many people didn't like this one because I would love for Naughty Dog to keep putting out masterpieces like this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The developers of The Last of Us said that part 1 was about love, and part 2 is about hate. They really nailed that. I can't think of a game in recent years that has made me feel more emotions than this game. My only real complaint is that while the second half does a good job of humanizing you've grown to hate for the first half of the game, it doesn't really inspire you to want to continue forward. You see all of the characters you've grown to care about and forcing you to brutally kill them off feels truly awful. There were several times where I felt like I'd be better off not finishing the game, and it doesn't make you feel much better at the end. As such I can't say I'd recommend the game to just anyone, but as a whole it was a pretty bold narrative all throughout. If you need happy endings to function normally, don't play this game.

Also most of these 0 star reviewers can just be honest and say they hate the gays. The way the story plays out it doesn't matter even a little if Dina was a girlfriend or a boyfriend.

There are more genuine reasons to hate this game than "my girl character kissed a girl and it broke my narrow perspective on life."

The characters are nuanced and have personalities of their own. They're very much not vessels for the player to impose themselves onto. You will be forced to do things as a character that disgust you throughout the game, hopefully more than the character being gay.

THE LAST OF US PART 2... a mi me encanto per me gustaría muchos mas si Abby hubiera muerto.

The combat, the stealth and the storytelling is beautiful when you're playing. But, in terms of story, I can understand why people got mad at this sequel. The way it tells you the deaths and how it affects the main characters was not the best option, and in my personal experience, I've waited for years to see the conflict between Joel and Ellie, but the way they kill Joel is so quickly that it confuses me. The flashbacks and the fact that you have to play with Abby doesn't help. But on the other hand, the revenge path of Ellie is enjoyable and the ending is good if you ask to me. So, the game is fun and it's a "good" ending for Ellie's story, but it could have been much better. Expand

I can honestly say no game, book, movie, tv show, theatre or any entertainment medium has EVER pulled as much out of me than this game. TLOUP2 has made me feel it all, I laughed hard, cried hard, felt such joy and glee, felt pure anger, felt intrigued, pure fun & satisfaction, felt nostalgic, giddy, fear, pure terror, a lot of adrenaline, blew my mind with its lore and depth, puzzled me only to deliver a satisfying answer, it made me feel sick, impressed me, was unpredicatable, just felt so real and well realised. No game/movie/show has ever triggered a physical response from me. It truly is something special, it says a lot about the person playing it. The characters and world are so three dimensional that you just accept them as real people. It's so well done. Truly a game that is special and unlike anything I'll likely ever play. The team deserves all the awards. It's no wonder as of writing this it's the most awarded game in history. I find it complete rubbish, everyone who qualifies the game as evil, homophobic haters, and hurt fans who believe this is a fantasy game, the game is so complex in the psychological part, shows the reality in the crap world we are, these people expected people, iconic characters to die Tony Stark, and sorry my skies so was not and so is not real life, hide in their absurd fantasies and their cheap policies, believing that the game would be a post-apocalyptic game as we have always seen this touches more the flesh and penetrates more the soul and shows reality not to a fantasy like all games that we are used to playing at the end of the world, although, it is a linear game gives the option to live and explore other things, transport us to a past and remember that affection father and daughter, and show more things and delve a little into an experience different from the others, as curious, the game there are also pieces of curious data, example when ellie goes to the museum there are historical and educational data and that details seemed interesting to me, because there is no lack of the rat child hurt by Joel's death and his homophobia that has not managed to capture the attention or did not notice, it helps to turn those kinds of people intellectual, those criticisms are those people who threw a lump of stone in their shoe, and cut off an arm and an eye so as not to persirvir any more Whatever the game is, and the experience, since the death of Joel, you get the feeling, you learn that every decision you make, has its consequence, now that maybe it had some fillings and characters with nothing to do with the main and emblematic characters, and a raw and dry death, as it is in reality, maybe that did lack strength, from Ellie we learn that the experiences that are learned from Pain are the ones that make us stronger, to one who does not get what is expected in the end, as to many grieved critics, who stigmatized the game in one way or another, as if they did not know what world we are standing in, the game touched reality and are always so accustomed to the same fantasy, of the were happy forever, many do not understand why the game goes beyond a fantasy. Many games need to be more realistic and this one did. Gameplay 98

Part 2 was better than its predecessor in almost all aspects. Part 1 remains my all time favorite because the development in the story and characters was more intimate. What I've really missed is more moments between Ellie and Joel. Which makes me look back with melancholy to part 1.

Nevertheless, I have never played such an ambitious and realistic looking game with so much care in worldbuilding, level design, details and subtle way of storytelling. It was a mature, horrifying, harsh, exciting and beautiful experience.

Part 1 was about finding the light and a reason to live. Part two was about seeking the darkness and a reason to kill. Both with hope towards the future. Both unique.

After completing part II, I thought about the game and how the story fits together for days and everything fell in its place. If you pay attention to the little details it will give you the closure you need with a lovely and pure ending.

    Pros:
    + World Building
    + Level Design
    + Details
    + Soundtrack
    + Sound design
    + Storytelling
    + Motion capture
    + Types of infected
    + Jumpscares
    + Weapon customization
+ Seamless transitions between cutscenes and gameplay
+ The different perspectives made me think twice about the things I did in the story
+ Closure if you pay attention to the details

    Cons:
    - Playtime with second main character felt too long at times and the story lost its pacing since I wished the story was build more around Ellie

TLOU part 2 is a masterpiece. it will hit you with emotions if you let the story take you on this roller coaster, it has a unique and brutal story line you won't see a lot in games or even other mediums the story does not care about your desires and thoughts so you have to let it take you on this ride, which makes this game so divisive but nonetheless this is a piece of art

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look. I’m heavily disappointed in the gaming community right now. This game is not a 0/10. It’s not even close. The problem with the people who are saying this game is a 0/10 is that that’s not even possible. Let’s say, hypothetically, the story is complete garbage, 0/10. Fine. But what about the rest of the game? What about the rest of a AAA Naughty Dog game. With more gameplay features than the first game. Better graphics than the first game. And just overall a better game not taking in story. Then, maybe it’s a 5/10. So there’s my complaint. On to the story, I think it was fairly good. The main think being that it is not a sequel to The Last of Us. It is not The Last of Us 2, but a further part of The Last of Us, or The Last of Us Part II. And I think that’s where many people go wrong when they complain about the story elements. When this game starts up, within the first two hours, we are given the death of a main character. One who we have come to love over the past seven years. But this is not the problem with the story. When you take a look back at the contents of the first game, without context from Part II, you may think this was a poor choice. And it was definitely unfavorable.
But it was part of the story. You have to instead look at the context of Part II. Joel literally destroyed all known possibility of a cure for THE zombie apocalypse. It was completely selfish, and the irony of the situation is that he doesn’t even get to reap the benefits of what he did. That’s the gut punch. That’s the great part of the story. The fact that Ellie resents him. When Ellie begins her journey to take revenge against Abby, she is riddled with constant flashbacks and trigger moments where all she sees is Joel in pain. What happens throughout the rest of the game up to the ending is incredibly important, but irrelevant to the current topic. This changes at the very end of the game when Ellie has her final “flashback”. This time, Joel is sitting on a porch playing the guitar. He looks happy. The shows that Ellie has come to peace with Joel despite not killing Abby. This directly feeds into the 15+ hours of gameplay in between the start and finish of the game. A lot of “fans” found the gameplay unfavorable because they did not wish to play as Joel’s killer. But have you thought about the fact that the entire first half of this game, you are playing as someone who murdered multiple people in response to one death? This should not only give an effect on the character of Ellie, and it does, but it should also effect the audience. Unfortunately, no one gave it enough of a chance to let the story take hold of them in the right way. This game is not a fan service. It is not a sequel. It is a part 1.5. A part 2. And a part 3. It adds so much story that wasn’t told in the firs place, which needed to be told. while also telling the important journey that Ellie went through to get to the epilogue where she had a change of mind. She in no way forgave Abby. She simply realized that she was at peace and no longer needed to harm her. The ending is devastating to the audience because it is also devastating to Ellie and I hope I’m not the only one who realizes that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man where do I begin? This game is so far the most deepest story-driven game I have ever played. I guess one of the things that pulls players out from this game is that the makers of the Last of Us 2 made the game too human. I'd like to emphasize that, TOO HUMAN. Like humanity, as insignificant in the universe, the game's message was delivered to me (personally) that the characters in this game, dying in the most meaningless of ways, can always happen at any moment. The game is so fleshed out so close to human psyche that I myself have find it difficult to see through the game in the mood they set it in. It was difficult to see the game that has the aspects of a human and psychology, and without the normal cliches of a game like invincible heroes, black and white decision making, the boobs, and beautifully symmetrical designed characters. This game taps into the deepest core of human emotions and feelings that not all gamers can grasp, and that the game was for me, not an entertainment, but was a message that we all can relate to; whether it is in present time, or in an actual apocalypse.

Also, my guess as to why some people hate it so much is that it betrays the norms of games and how we see games as we are accustomed to. There are no heroes in this game, and the characters, while being in a linear game, was not constructed to be warriors of morality and justice, but was built as a human, trying to survive. Characters trying to keep finding for something to fight for. I know not all gamers will agree with me, and will probably hate me for this, but I do believe those who have hated the game has either not received the true meaning of the game, or did receive it, but just wont accept it, or they are blatantly nitpicking just to spite the game.

Like an empty wallet, a hungry stomach, and a broken heart. this game teaches a great lesson about love, hate, guilt and forgiveness. This game is a masterpiece. I wouldn't say it any other way. 10 out of 10 in my book.

The writing, the camera work, the characters, the scenarios, the art, EVERYTHING is an absolute 10/10. It took 7 years but it delivered. You can see why people would be kinda mad at it but, I'm my honest opinion, in order to hate this game, (more exactly, the story) you either thought this would be a sea of roses and didn't have your mind truly open to new experiences or simply refused yourself to embrace the great writing, going with the flow of the hate.

With these being said, i really liked the game. Story wise is not better than the first one, i really didn’t like playing so much with Abby and i think the end was a bit rushed but overall its an impressive game. Gameplay and graphics are probably the best ones i’ve played in any game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The enemy encounters in TLoU2 are tense, brutal, and challenging. The atmospheric music and intelligent enemy AI made me squirm in my seat as I snuck around the environment. I rarely got mad when I died. Instead, I looked forward to approaching the scenario differently. When I had to fight, I enjoyed the combat; however, combat was sufficiently messy and resource-depleting to incentivize a stealthy approach.

The story is excellent. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just say that this game knows how to make you feel the way it wants you to feel. The score, environment, cinematography, and script work in tandem to give the main characters compelling emotional lives. However, some have criticized the lack of choice in certain key moments of the game. Indeed, their were several moments where I had to accomplish a goal of the main character that I really didn't want to go through with. While challenging and fun, on an emotional level these moments were almost painful. But I think that was the point. At the end of TLoU1, Joel didn't give Ellie a choice. So Ellie doesn't give us a choice. She alienates the player as she loses what she loves. Like everyone else in the game, we are powerless to stop Ellie. We can only watch the tragedy unfold and hope she finds the strength to forgive.

Until about 18 hours in I was completely hooked with the immersive story. I loved the character development and my emotional connection with them as the story progressed made me care about what was going on and who was doing what. I am mature enough to accept the openly gay relationship between main characters in the story for what it is and I have to say that the sensitivity in which the script is handled is excellent.
Combat is both brilliant and disastrous. When it works, the gun battles are awesome with limited ammo forcing you to adapt a defensive strategy while picking off foes one at a time. The melee attacks become epic as you unlock the ability to upgrade weapons rendering the on-screen violence quite impactful emotionally. It is an 18 rated game, so if you don’t like violence, don’t buy it.
Sadly as the game progressed into the second half of the story, I quickly lost patience and interest in the story line. I was forced into playing characters that I, initially, cared very little about and I was effectively forced into relearning whole sets of skills that I had already spent hours honing in the first half of the game, only to have to do it all again albeit with slight tweaks to the weapons and skill-trees. Being forced to walk around in now familiar venues having conversations and looking at utter tat in the environment for the sake of developing the second leg of the story really frustrated me. Huge Yawn.
The other irritation throughout the game is one which many titles with NPCs suffer from, the NPCs constantly get in your way. The frequency in which NPCs would push in front of me when trying to position myself at the edge of a wall to ambush an enemy was a joke. I tried bludgeoning the NPCs from time to time but to no effect. It’s a lesson for all developers. If you must place NPCs in a game, for goodness sake keep them out the way or allow the player to beat them senseless for being stupid morons.
In the final few hours the story jumps repeatedly from one flashback to another and for me the game became the definition of tedium. At this stage of the game the already irksome combat controls became a real hassle, probably because I had stopped caring and I just wanted it to end. When pushed into tight spaces with large numbers of foes, the combat mechanics seriously lets the game down. I couldn’t find any method of locking on to a target during melee and when you dodge a foe, you have to manually swing the camera around to find them again which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t and often I’d lose the upper hand simply because the mechanics were too slow and too cumbersome to actually achieve what I wanted to achieve. Slow and poorly designed weapon selection mechanics added further to the problem and it became unnecessarily frustrating in an otherwise extremely well polished title.
In the final third of the game, Naughty Dog's vision started to win me over. I didn't agree with all their story-board choices but the immersive play forced me to start caring about other main characters as much as Ellie and some genuine morally-charged themes left me thinking about the game long after the credits stopped rolling.

P.S.: Saying goodby is hard for everyone but life, is just a series of experiences that come and go all the way till the end:) and all what we have in the end, are our memories, the taste from our past experiences:)

Love it from start to finish.
Best looking game of the generation. Its incredible what Naughty Dog can do with a 2013 hardware.
So far, game of the year.

It's simple: People just haven't played the whole game. Even though being different from what we expected and being difficult to accept NG's decisions, in the end not only convinces the player, but also proofs that this game is one of the best games ever made

I dont know why people are raging against the game. The game is perfect! The story isnt bad has most kids say, gameplay is very good. Honestly, the bad reviews are just to bring the game down after a long wait to play it.

Expand

As a huge fan of the first game, the Last of Us 2 managed to surprise and amaze me in ways far beyond my expectations. It gave me an experience that I will never forget.

The game play is very similar to the first game, but improved upon in numerous ways such as the added dodge functionality that makes melee fights much more exciting. I am personally not a great fan of stealth-style game play, but in this case making the choice between being sneaky or going in weapons blazing is a lot of fun at all times.

The graphics (especially the lighting), sounds, voices, characters and landscapes are among the best if not the best I have ever seen or heard on any platform. I played the game alone, in a fairly dark room with headphones and on a relatively high difficulty. It was a really intense experience that left me with a pounding heart many times.

The biggest part of general criticism seems to be the story and the characters that drive it. I personally must strongly disagree with this assessment but I understand where it's coming from. Where the first game was more of a character driven blockbuster, the second game is much more nuanced and calm and puts the player in uncomfortable situations and perspectives. I personally enjoyed the heck out of this very grown up approach. It kept me interested and engaged every minute and left me wanting more. But if you were expecting a linear progression of game one in a more standard Hollywood style sequel, you might be disappointed. For me, maybe because I've also gotten older, it was the best storytelling I have ever experienced in a game (or movie).

For me, the worst thing was that the came had to end at some point. The ending was a bit abrupt, but served well as a conclusion.

I would give 11/10 if possible - this is why I play games. It has instantly become one if my favorite games of all time and I applaud Naughty Dog for being so brave with this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really scared of playing this game. I already knew 3 key parts of the story before playing. I knew Joel would die very quickly, I knew I would have to play as Abby for 10 hours and I knew at the end I couldn’t even kill Abby. These three things alone are enough of a reason to scare anyone or to rate this game a 0, however, it just doesn’t matter when combined with the entire experience. Now I am not saying this game is perfect, but certainly doesn’t deserve the hate it has been receiving. Yes, watching Joel die in that way sucks and after finishing the game I still wonder if it was the correct way to end the story of such beloved character. But putting yourself in the mindset, you understand why naughty dog decided to make this, you really feel like Ellie and that motivation keeps you going. Even if I knew I would be playing as Abby, I didn’t know when, so when it happened, at first my motivation to play as Abby was to just arrive at that critical point, but as I kept playing, my motivation changed dramatically and I ended up enjoying a lot the entire Abby section to the point I realized y deeply cared for this characters that I just murdered some hours before. The gameplay, although very similar to the first, I found it very enjoyable and really fun, the graphics and score are just perfect, but what really surprises me is the number of balls a developer needs in order to craft and present a story like this one. I ended up absolutely loving this game and has been on my mind for weeks now, it is truly a devastating, epic, sad, funny, and just a piece of art that anyone should experience. I repeat that yes it is devastating to play this game but in the end, it feels with it. 10/10 Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
