If, however, you were hoping for a story that builds upon and evolves the narrative in a way that's true to the brutal world these characters inhabit, I think you'll agree that this game delivers some of the best storytelling this medium has to offer.

The plot expands in this zombie apocalyptic world and tells a beautiful story through using relatable and complex characters. The choices in this game feel very realistic, and Naughty Dog does an excellent job in forcing the player to question the morality of their decisions. Each character has their own perspective of how they came into this cruel reality. When given conflicts amongst one another, we begin to understand a powerful concept in that there are no right and wrong decisions in this game, but a complex plot setup by characters who are trying to survive on their own. There were several times where we start rooting for one character, only to understand the story from a different perspective and disagree completely from the initial character, a sign of compelling story telling.

There is a lot of backlash amongst players over the journeys of some of the game characters and where the story ended. Unlike many video game stories, Last of Us Part II committed to a reality where actions have consequences. The game does not offer a fairy tell ending but instead prioritizes a plot consistent with its dark and well developed themes. This is where the game truly shines: taking daring and controversial steps that aren’t conventionally found in video games. If there is any hope for the storytelling in video games to meet the quality found in literature or film, these narrative risks need to be celebrated in these rare instances that they are taken.

This game is a beautifully crafted title that deserves positive recognition. Naughty Dog outdid themselves, for which they made a high standard, and pushed the envelope in order to produce a stellar work of art.

    Presentation:
This game is a master-crafted work of art. From the largest of environments to the smallest of details, the artists and developers ensured that nearly every aspect of the world created received a surprising amount of attention. The world that they visually created feels lived in and helps the player feel grounded. The movements of the characters, the npcs, and how assets around both alter when interacted with is phenomenal and is often overlooked in most games. Examples of this: the way snow, dirt, mud, water moves when coming into contact. The way the aforementioned gets onto the characters' clothing and persons. How the environment acts in general: streams of water falling down are altered depending on wind physics, reflections appearing on reflective surfaces like walls, tvs, metal piping, zippers moving when in motion, clothing moving with the wind. All of this comes together in harmony to masterfully present a truly realised world that is believable and a joy to experience.

    Story:
No spoilers. I'll say that the story is not as tight or singularly focused as the first. That's not a bad thing, but it might be if a player is going into the game expecting a story that is very similar to the first. There are flashbacks and whilst they do provide relevant backstory and are of interest, I can see how some might find the placement of the flashbacks to be a bit jarring at times and may not be as cohesive to the story-telling as one might like. Overall the story is a good one that invokes a lot of emotions. It is rife with depressing, difficult moments along with moments of lightheartedness and humour. In general and by the end, you do end up feeling a connection with the characters of the story. Even the minor ones, and even the ones who you thought you never would.

This is a wonderful experience that took me nearly 38 hours to complete as I, a lover of the first game, enjoy the world of The Last of Us and don't mind taking my time with Ellie and the gang. I definitely recommend.

On brand for The Last Of Us series, it presents a dark, morally grey glimpse into a horrifying world. Violence is necessary, but also emotionally punished. Loss is commonplace and often leads to cycles of revenge. The nuanced thematics separate this game from others of the genre. It is incredibly effective at making the player connect with these characters who struggle so profoundly. The one issue I had with the game thematically was its anti-violence was achieved through gratuitous violence throughout. That said, it is difficult to achieve such a strong effect without this contradiction. The gameplay is fun, but there is a reason it has a reputation for questionable stealth mechanics and “idiotic” AI. Often predictable and occasionally baffling, the AI typically has a great deal of difficulty finding the player whilst in plain view. The gunplay can feel clunky as well, though feels very satisfying when making impressive shots. At times, the clunky gun mechanics feels immersive. I’m sure I would have trouble switching between various weapons in any situation, including an apocalyptic wasteland teeming with deadly zombies and deadlier tribes of violent humans. Most of the time, the gun mechanics would be frustrating, though not game ruining. The visuals fluctuate between beautiful at worst and stunning at best. The imagining of urban environments in the process of being retaken by nature is wondrous and haunting. A great deal of time was spent during my play through just taking in all the intricate details of the scenery. A game earns high marks for visual storytelling when one often stumbles upon scenes and can tell what happened before the player arrived with no words needed. The Last Of Us Part 2 is a force of imagination, thematics, visual storytelling, and excitement. It falls into familiar pitfalls other stealth based games struggle to overcome, but ultimately provides and incredibly compelling 20-30 hours of gameplay and leaves the player with a great deal to contemplate upon completion. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

WARNING: MILD SPOILERS MIGHT BE AHEAD

Above all else, The Last of Us Part 2 puts your ability to face your own bias on the test. That said, I don't think that game developer Naught Dog expected it to be such a central theme in their game about revenge and the cycle of violence; what made it that way was the game's marketing and unfortunate leak weeks before its release. The fact that the game's premise was shaken to the core hours into the narrative, combined with the fact that people now knew that what they were getting was not what they expected, lead to them heading into the game with a strong opinion about its narrative choices, having to de facto handle their own bias from the moment they picked up the controller for the first time.

But let's talk about gameplay first. The Last of Us Part 2 take the best out of the first's mechanics, and expands upon it. Every encounter introduces a challenge: first you have to understand what's going on, then plan your strategy, and then execute it. And every time you start to feel that it's getting old, the game introduces a new mechanic that shakes things up and freshens up the experience: new tools, skills, enemy types, terrain structures and even play styles (upon which I will not extend).

For example, one of the core mechanics of the game is stealth movement, and in many cases where there is a huge cluster of enemies, you keep low by crawling through tall grass. At one point, though, the tall grass is traded for shallow water, where you can only crawl for so long before having to resurface, putting your potential over-reliance on the mechanic to the test.

The resources and skill systems are not too far from the standard: you can collect resources to craft utilities, upgrade your weapons, and improve your skills. In order to craft utilities such as health kits, molotov cocktails and stun grenades, you need to collect materials by looting every room and corner. In order to upgrade your weapons, you need to collect bolts by looting every room and corner. In order to upgrade your skills, you need to collect pills by... well, you got the hang of it. I personally did not mind the mindless looting - in fact, my strategy would usually be to wipe out every last enemy on stage so I can roam about and check every bathroom stall in Seattle, but at some point, mostly during the latter stretches of the game, I started giving up on such luxuries in favor of pursuing the story. I was already confident enough to not upgrade my character any more, and the game's pacing started to get to me.

Which brings me to my main issue with the game: the pacing. The game took me over 30 hours to beat, where the first took me just a little over 15. This was not due to an extremely longer story, but because the game features really, REALLY long tasks. While the premise of a specific section might be simple, you'll find yourself going off course multiple times, usually having to hack your way out of a basement through a horde of infected. That said, this is but a minor inconvenience and while the idea of fighting yet another horde is boring, the encounters themselves are actually diverse and oftentimes enjoyable.

Moving to the presentation, sound and art direction - they are superb. Naughty Dog have yet again proven that they deliver some of the best audiovisual experiences in gaming. Everything from the scenery to lighting to the characters themselves is beautifully rendered and almost without a hitch. Even when characters kiss or physically struggle, you almost never see any clipping. The textures of everything is high-res with no visible hiccups, from people to enemies to buildings and even grass.

The acting and direction are amazing. Whether you agree with the narrative choices or not, this production was not lazily put together. The actors do an incredible job conveying what the characters think and feel, and every interaction is engrossing to watch. The action sequences are immersive to a point where it's hard to tell where the cutscene ends and gameplay begins.

The Last of Us Part 2 is, in my opinion, a unique experience. While I tremendously enjoyed it, a lot of people were disappointed that it was not what they wanted it to be. And it's completely fine, you are fully entitled to feel let down, as you were promised a revenge story but did not get exactly that. But if you've decided to not play the game at all because of what other people say, then I urge you - give this game a chance!

If revenge is what you came for, you can simply lose one of the latter battles in Seattle on purpose, turn off the game, and go to bed knowing that justice was served. But by the time you actually get to that point, the game writers do their best to convince you of one thing: to hear them out. That, above all else, is what gives you the strength to follow the narrative through, even when your own bias is screaming at you that this is not the game that you wanted to play

I have never played a game like this. This was anything but was I was expecting from this game. It has pushed the limits of narrative video games. The prologue, the two-sided storyline, the ending. It all meshed to create this poignant story of redemption, salvation, and, ultimately, forgiveness. And all that aside, the gameplay is wonderful. And the level design is as good as Naughty Dog has ever made. Fantastic game.

Anyone on here who says this game has a "bad story" is failing to distinguish between a bad story, and just being mad about Joel dying. Menus are unobtrusive, and you don't spend much time at all in them. Combat is incredibly fun, and replayability is made higher by a new game+, as well as being able to solve any encounter in a multitude of different ways.

Where this game shines the most is the story. The Last of Us's execution of the struggle to retain one's humanity in an utterly inhumane world is perfectly captured in the Last of Us 2. While the setting zombie apocalypse always sounds bleak or brutal, unlike other similarly set stories, TLoU2 excels in showing not only the horror of humanity, but the beauty as well. It celebrating that we can truly make life in any world, and also reminding us the depths of depravity we can fall to when that life is upset. It excels at putting us in the minds and worlds of the characters in a way that no other game ever has. The full story cannot be grasped until it's concluded, and the second playthrough is made so much richer as a result.

Post apocalyptic Seattle is so incredibly real. seeing one of my favorite cities so incredibly well rendered in a game was fun beyond words. the graphics are of such incredible beauty that I honestly was speechless at points.

In my estimation, this game is the pinnacle of video game story telling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really I'm giving it an 8.5. 8 just seems too low.

    SPOILERS.

    OK. I'm confused.

I was fortunate enough to avoid most of the leaks, but two things I did see were A) You play partly as Abby, who's a transsexual villain and B) Joel dies (I didn't see how). For the whole game I was waiting for some big reveal that would show that Abby was transsexual...it never came. One of the main reasons people were so angry about the leaks were that she was trans. Just complete and utter nonsense. The way this game has been review bombed with 0's and 1's and 2's is really weird and honestly embarrassing.

There are problems with this game, absolutely. Some real problems. But if you're bothered that Abby is muscly...weird. If you're bothered that Ellie is a lesbian...weird. If you're bothered that a side character shaved her head because she wants to look like a boy...weird. Is it fueled with agenda? Sure. Is it pushing boundaries? Absolutely. Should it mean you score it with a 0 out of 10? Absolutely not.

Starting with the positives...what a GAME this is. I'm no gaming expert so I'm going to struggle to get all the words out correctly. But as a GAME (separate to the storyline), it doesn't get much better. Insane graphics, probably the best I've seen. The fluidity is flawless. Animations are incredible. I personally love the changes in pace between action and taking it easy. Gun play feels very satisfying. Enemy AI is very good (and adjustable). The zombies are scarier then before. The minor details are there. Sound wise it's incredibly eerie and atmospheric. The moment where you first come across the Scars and get hit with the arrow...I jumped out of my seat! The high pitched whistle, the deep throng of petrifying music as you pull the arrow out of your shoulder. Just amazing. I've seen the gameplay be labelled as boring and not worthy of a PS4 title, and I genuinely find those opinions laughable. The gameplay lived up to everything I expected. Such an improvement on part 1 (which you would expect after 7 years). But how about the story?

This is where I do have problems, and can't help but feel a little disappointed. I'm the biggest fan of part 1...my favourite game of all time. And a huge part of that is down to the incredible story...the connection between Joel and Ellie, the emotion in the cut scenes, every character that was introduced along the way, how the narrative twisted and turned. Just a phenomenal story. I did have a feeling that Joel's decision at the end of part 1 would come back to bite him. But did I think it would bite him like THIS? 2 hours into the game, with no context as to why Abby wanted to do it, after having PLAYED as Abby?! For the record...I have no issue with Joel dying. I don't even have an issue with the way in which he died. It was shocking, powerful. You felt a sense of dread. When the final blow lands and the sound goes to that high pitched screech like you yourself have just suffered a bang to the head. It was very well done. The writers are entitled to take the story how they see fit, and if that means Joel dying, so be it. I'm sad about it, I loved him, I didn't want him to die. But if that's the direction they wanted it to go, OK. Some people in these reviews have been acting like spoilt children. The problem I DO have is A) the fact we had no context as to why it was happening, B) How lucky Abby was to find herself in that situation and C) Not getting to experience the immediate reaction.

I feel it would have been better for Abby to infiltrate Jackson first. Become a member of the community. We could learn about her back story. We could understand why she wanted to kill Joel. THEN we could switch to Ellie trying to get revenge. Asking the player to be as understanding as what Naughty Dog want is dangerous, and clearly in this case hasn't really worked. And one thing I loved from the first game was the emotion, how it would have me on the verge of tears at times. The scene where Sam dies and Henry turns the gun on himself. The scene where Ellie explains to Joel how everyone she cared about has left her or died. I didn't get any of that from this game. The reaction to Joel's death is rushed. The game seemingly doesn't care about Jesse dying. The flashbacks with Joel and Ellie both could have been more emotional, fleshed out and satisfying. That's my main issue.

I ended up liking Abby. During the final fight sequence I was pressing buttons I didn't want to press, begging Ellie not to do it. I was glad she didn't. But even the way that came about, Ellie leaving practically a dream life with Dina and the baby behind, seemed silly and forced.

All in all I think it's an amazing game, slightly let down by a cluttered story, which tries so hard to make you side with a new character. The Last Of Us is Ellie's story. And I really hope they do a part 3 with a stronger narrative and a happy ending for a character we love so much.

I was just angry and terribly sad with the early death of Joel, really wish we could have seen more of him before he go. But, I think that's exactly the point of the whole experience. He's out so quickly that you, along Ellie, is mourning him pretty much at the same time, through the entire game. Losing someone is never easy, it's never the right time either. In games, they usually do death that feels like the circle is, or almost, complete. Therefore, you feel less **** about it, or you are left with a nostalgic feeling. But like I said, in real life, it's never the right time, and that's exactly what The Last of Us made me feel about Joel's death. A real death, too soon, plainly painful to think about, like they truly do in real life.
I recommend strongly. It's an amazing game. *Excuse my poor English*

The original felt grey. It was about flawed people trying to help and getting sucked into a much bigger dilemma. Very Half-Life or in particular Half-Life 2, where the world is authoritarian and everything is terrible, but you fought on.

The original title is awful, but in a way that felt real. There is reasoning that feels solemn, and it feels like the ending makes sense.

The sequel is angry. It wants you to see the torture of someone that did nothing of the sort, (to these people) as realistic, then later view that in a different light. You cannot create visceral imagery then expect it to be forgotten.

If there were a prequel to this, if we had the chance to give any care to these people it could have changed. However, it is a heavy-handed approach to forcing a new set of characters into the series. It is required to care and by the end I did. I did not want them to die and it was very self-reflective.

I cared slightly about these people, but they did bad things, almost none of them are as redeemable as the end of the first game. It just doesn't hit the same peak, and while it is a master craft in acting and technical design, it just misses the mark the first game created on that mountain.

I absolutely loved the first Last of Us, the store hit home for me, and I enjoyed the gameplay, environments, graphics and of course the characters Joel and Ellie. Was it a 10, no but near enough for ME. There is always issues like having to play it on a **** console for one, **** hardware that impacts frames and forces you to use a control system that makes aiming feel like you're trying to target a moving object with a fishing rod. But that aside it was amazing.

How do I feel about The Last of Us 2? It is basically the same as the first one, graphics and environments are great, gameplay is almost unchanged. The characters..... well half the game is about characters we dont know, and the other half the characters we love but they are different. Now that is somewhat understandable as their experiences have changed them as they would a real person and you learn why throughout the game. I enjoyed the story telling, even if I did not like the new characters, I didn't hate them but I just had no connection. The flashbacks for Joel and Ellie were probably the best parts. Still hated playing it on console, the frame drops and ****ty controller is still there and frustrating in those times where quick reactions would have helped.

Overall this is not a ZERO and its definitely not a TEN, dont know what these critics are smoking, need to have a long hard look at their integrity. Is it a GREAT game, no, but its enjoyable and Im glad I played it.

After playing hundreds of games, I have never experience an emotional roller coaster as much as this. You will love and hate the story as your emotions fluctuates between anger and empathy.

The last of us part II again subverts the expectations of what a lead protagonist should be. While we feel genuine hatred for Abby after she so barbarically kills Joel it creates the same anger that Ellie feels within the player. Watching that scene unfold I felt the same anger and sadness as Ellie and rarely can a game illicit such a response. The last of us part 2 does a great job at posing a real question to the player. Can the love for someone out way the things they have done? And should they not be accountable for their actions? Joel systematically continued the end of the world by eliminating the only doctor that could have created a cure. Thus plunging the world into eternal chaos. Just because his intentions were not to lose another daughter can we really as rational thinking people not expect that decision to catch up with him? It should have and it did. Now when the shift to Abby arrives we again are posed another question. Who exactly is the villain here? We see Abbys trauma almost mimic Ellie’s. Loss of a father that fuels a blinding hatred. I think it’s quite poignant to point out Neil Druckmanns Israeli heritage, not to attack but as a backdrop for the themes of this game. I am a British born Palestinian and my life has continuous been filled with a parental given hatred for a people I know nothing about. I think the whole theme of the cyclical nature of revenge and violence are very real problems the world faces today. Inability to forgive and move past trauma. Naughty dog have really hammered home the idea that everyone is a villain in someone else’s story. Abby the villain in Ellie’s story. Joel the villain of Abby story. Ellie the villain in the stories of Nora, Mel and Owen. And in the world of the last of us that fits beautifully. It’s the post apocalypse and there are no good people any more. Just varying shades of grey. I praise this game not because the story was amazing. But because it dared to do something more. Challenge my preconceptions and opinions uand art that makes you think that deep is never going to be bad a thing. Growth is everything. Forgiveness is all.

Not perfect, but I did really enjoy playing.

The game-play and graphics are as polished and fun as you'd expect. It's a lengthy game so you certainly get your money's worth. Nothing about the puzzles is revolutionary, but the combat sequences do a good job of letting you decide the best way to approach a group of enemies. For the narrative, I am surprised at the level of controversy

For the narrative, I am surprised at the level of controversy it has created, and I have to wonder what many players were expecting, without asking to be pandered to. I enjoyed the direction the game took, and thought it was clever to essentially split the game into two distinct parts. It gave me much more game-play than I thought I would get for the $60 I paid.

The biggest weakness for me was the writing and story-telling. In my opinion, the characters did not get a chance to grow as much as they should have, considering events that occur throughout. Although I am glad these characters are not free from the consequences of their actions, its hard to say any of them really learned a lesson. This results in an ending that feels bleak and hopeless, almost just for the sake of feeling bleak and hopeless.

Despite enjoying the large amount of game-play, the story felt like it was dragging towards the end, and it almost felt like their were several good moments to wrap things up, only to fake out the player and keep things going on and on, only end a moment that is particularly emotionally difficult to stomach. This could have been fixed by either ending maybe 30-60 minutes sooner, or 30-60 minutes even later. Even if just to give the player a sense that a lesson was learned and these characters are not beyond redemption for their choices.

Despite feeling let down by the ending, it did not sour what was overall very enjoyable experience. All other important aspects of a video game were present: Graphics, Game-play, Music.

I do intend to play again on New Game+, and seriously hope their is a third (and final) installment.

The technical and artistic aspects of the game are simply top of the industry and in this regard improves the first part, leaping to a next level facilitated by the advancing technology applied to games (and probably a bigger budget too?).

Playing this game is a gripping and highly enjoyable experience, even if the excess of blood and extreme violence kinda feels a bit unnecessary in some of the fights.

The gameplay felt too similar (almost clonical) to the first game, which is not necessarily a criticism, as I find it to be well balanced, challenging and fun. So why should you change something that works great?

My biggest criticism is the story and character decisions/motivations. As mentioned in many other reviews as far as I could tell, I found the 'revenge above all' motivation too simplistic, repetitive, predictable and even anti-climatic. It's an extreme survival world where I would expect people to focus a bit more on self-preservation with the minimal means they have, and avoid any unnecessary injuries etc as much as possible, as hospitals or doctors are not particularly available... however, we find ourselves constantly forced to put our character in extreme peril just to seek vengeance or something like that... It's a non-essential task most of the time, highly capricious at times, that made it difficult for me to really engage with what we were doing or why we are crossing (again and again) the city side to side just to ask for someone who might know someone, who might lead us to someone who hurt our friend months ago.
When in the original Fallout I'm asked to leave the bunker to search for a highly critical and necessary water filter system that stopped working, I felt the reason why I was travelling post-apocalyptic wastelands and risking everything was 'justified' and necessary. Someone had to do it. On the contrary, most of the time in The last of us 2 I felt very disconnected with our purpose. Thi wasn't the case on the first game either, when looking for a cure sounded like an absolutely understandable objective that justified taking all necessary risk (no cure equals to no hope for anyone, so...).
Also, way too many flashbacks in this game. Some of them confused the hell out of me, between switching timelines and characters, at some point I didn't know what I was doing (and even worse, I stopped caring!).

In any case, a superb game. 8,5/10 for me. Due to the narrative flaws it doesn't reach higher. Technical aspects, art, acting, sounds, music, polished gameplay... so many things are close to a 10.

Oh and obviously ignore the sad sack incels giving it zero.

An absolute masterpiece, full of internal conflict, harrowing gut wrenching emotional moments and the most wonderfully crafted story.

Truly a work of genius. It is so saddening that the gaming community is so childish and immature that they cannot see art and brilliance even when it is staring them in the face. If you reading through the reviews. I'd ignore the negative ratings from

    Pros:

    +A technical achievement.

    Cons:
-Although I don't have a problem with Abby she didn't click on me, in a game like this it is all about the engagement of the player with the characters.
-Abby/Lev's story didn't feel as powerful and meaningful as Joel/Ellie's.
-Game dragged in the 2nd half, felt too long.

TLOU2 has it's own identity. I'm glad it happened, but also see some flaws when they decided to come back to a story that was perfect. The reception probably would be better if they moved away from Joel and Ellie's story. Even if I didn't like some things, the game is incredible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really appreciate that Naughty Dog did not just go the safe way and make a game that will please all the fans. I understand that this alienated many but the result is a piece of software that will stay very unique for a long time. Even if I was shocked by many of the events in the story and did not like all of them, I have to give a lot of credits to the developer for making me feel that way. It's a game that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end credits roll.

Gameplay and audiovisual design is of course stellar. The game feels very polished and offers a fair amount of challenge.

I understand that not everyone is happy with how the game ended but at the same time, I think is unfair to rate it so low just because you did not like it.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
