This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 could be the single greatest game I have ever played. And heres why.

    Characters:

Most people hate that you have to play as abby because she is the antagonist in this game but i think it was a good idea to make us play as her because it shows the story from 2 different points of view and lets the player decide who's the good guy and who's the bad guy, since neither of them are entirely good or bad. The actors and designers have done an amazing job with bringing these characters to life. I can't think of a game where characters emotions seem as realistic as this, during the scene at the end when Joel wants to cry but tries to hold back while talking to ellie about what he did at the hospital was arguably Troy Bakers best performance in this game. I think that this game does an amazing job with LGBTQ+ representation, unlike other games with LGBTQ+ characters, this accurately shows that they have to deal with homophobia and transphobia and shows that different LGBTQ+ people experience it in different ways (for Ellie and Dina, it was only verbal abuse but for Lev it was an attempted murder)

    Story:

A lot of people didn't like the ending but i do understand why they did it this way. In part one Joel says to ellie "you have no idea what loss is". Now ellie has lost everything and she lost it all for nothing. Most people were upset that Ellie didn't kill Abby but I think this shows that she realizes that revenge will solve nothing because it won't bring Joel back and if she killed Abby, then how is she any better than Abby is.

    Graphics and aesthetics:

The game is absolutely beautiful and i love all the tiny details that are easy to miss like blood diluting in puddles or the animals that show up at random points in the game or even that slight film grain and blur in the distance. While playing, i can't even tell you how many times i had to stop, just to look at how good the game looks. Gameplay:

I've heard so many people argue that "linear gaming is dead" because open world games offer so much more than just the main story, but this game proves that linear games can be better than any open world game. The level design is done so well that there is so much to explore and even though it is linear, there are so many different ways to get through the levels.

    Weapons:

My favorite weapon additions have to be the silencers and abbys crossbow (I would like to be able to use a crossbow as ellie but i do prefer using ellies recurve bow) on the subject of bows, i want to mention that i love how they have improved the bow physics from the first game. Aiming with the bow in the first game was way too easy because it literally showed you the exact path the arrow will travel, in this game, until you attach a sight onto the bow, you need to judge distance by yourself. I also like how in new game+ you get all your weapons from the previous playthrough from the first day in Seattle. In the first game, even with new game+ you had to find the weapons again. I especially like this because now i can use the silenced smg in Seattle. Accessibility: Lots of games have had accessibility features but they were usually limited to alternate controls and a colourblind setting, or you would be required to buy more hardware like alternate controllers. This game takes accessibility to an entire new level and I've heard that a lot of blind people are now able to play it. I think that TLOU2s accessibility features should be the new standard for all games because gaming should be for everyone.

    Conclusion:

The last of us part 2 isn't just a good game but it exceeds the expectations and limits of what a game can be. It's also one of the most important games to ever be made. I've been a gamer since i was a kid and I've played hundreds of different games. The last of us part 2 is by far the best game i have ever played.

This is a beautiful game period. Design and attention to detail was flawless, the fight sequences were great as well. I love TLOU so I can’t hate too much, but it is a flawed game. What made me give it less than a ten is the Abby part, way too long. Somethings in the plot I wish were different. I love the inclusion of the LGBTQ and the transgender communities into the game as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beware the bandwagon haters on this one. Naughty Dog gave us a tremendous game here that emulates a lot of what we see now in The Walking Dead. The living, in a post-apocalyptic world, join the dead as being serious threats to our livelihood as they all pursue a better world. You take the reigns and feel the hope and helplessness of all of those characters, who have deep backstories that Naughty Dog allows us to explore. While we may thirst for just the senseless 1st person shooter (and there are elements of that here sure) what we get instead is a humanistic trial of survival and a game that questions your moral compass. Perhaps the only downside is that there are no real choices to make in the game...do you choose to kill or simply to wound in your battle? do you question who is innocent or guilty? are there characters who can choose to help or hurt you? The answer is no, and that is a beautifully missed opportunity in this game that begs for it at times. Still the gameplay, responsiveness, and AI is relatively flawless and TLOU2 is a game that is hard to put down. the choice of weaponry is strong and how you build your character is a reflection on the type of assassin you want to be (stealth vs. guns-a-blaze?). At times the story does get bogged down with cut scenes, and it sometimes gets clunky or off the rails is terms of strategy (the blob boss in the hospital is the perfect example), but otherwise the game is intense, bold, and scary as it is endearing and tender. I admit I was annoyed by the oaf-ish way Joel was portrayed in contrast to the original, how major characters were built up only to get shot in the head and all memory of them gone forever, and the Ellie-Dina love affair felt forced and I did find myself, at times, rooting for Abby. It made me question the game negatively until you realize, that's the point. It's supposed to leave you stunted and unsure how to feel, much like the characters in the game itself. The original LOU was perhaps the greatest game ever made and any sequel was going to leave some fans disappointed, but to give the game a 0 or 1 rating, is just flat-out stupid and can't be taken seriously. TLOU2 is truly a masterpiece in its own right, as a completionist is took me about 35 sitting hours to finish on hard and as soon as it was over I was ready for TLOU3. Expand

The graphics of the game are breathtaking, the amount of detail and the atmosphere are top notch. The cut-scences of the game have a nearly cinematic feel and the voice acting, motion capture are the highest quality in video games. So, on a technical level, this game is a perfect 10/10.

The problem for me is the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, the stealth gameplay/gunplay are very well done and it makes a lot of fun to outsmart your opponents, at least the human ones. I can't stand the infected encounters though, the AI is pretty dumb at points and everytime I heard the sound of a clicker, I frowned (I have a deep hatred for stalkers too cause they make so much more difficult to stealth your way through the encounter and are just a huge pain overall). But this wouldn't be a problem if the game wouldn't stay out of its welcome in 25-30 hours of playtime. For such a long game, the gameplay is much to repetitive, especially in the later part of the game. The developers should have cut out about a third of the game or make the gameplay more versatile towards the end to make this a game a more balanced and overall interesting expericence. During the last 10 hours, I just tried to avoid a lot of encounters as I was bored and annoyed about the procedure (slowly killing most enemies - get caught and the gun your way through the remaining - proceed to the next encounter). I know that this part is pretty subjective, after a played about half of the game, I just wanted to know how the story ends and just rushed most encounters. For their seven year of development, the gameplay is basically the same as in the first game. Gameplay 6/10

    So, now the story...

Overall, I really like the story of Part II. It tells a very interesting story about traumatized characters, tribalism and the consequences of revenge. I also like the change of perspective and really enjoyed Abby part of the story, although here part of the story was a bit to bloated (compare that to my problems with the gameplay above, this is the part that should have been cut shorter in my opinion). It was very interesting to see Abbie who already had her revenge and knows that it does not help coping the trauma that caused the killing spree in the first is put into perspective with the main character Ellie who is still consumed by hatred destroying hear own life on the way to revenge as Abbie did before. Abbie is Ellie if she would have killed Abbie, still dealing with most of her problems.
I also never rooted with Ellie through the whole game. She acted like total psychopath and killed a lot of innocent people (hundreds of wolves and seraphites) who had nothing to do with Abbie’s revenge plot in the first place. Like Neil Druckmann said years ago, the story is not meant to be fun and I think many people miss the points the developers want to make with the story. Many people dismiss the game because they don’t like the story subjectively and try their hardest to explain why the game is objectively bad and no one should be able to like the story bloating off every single thing that is off with the plot (and to be fair, the plot has heavy pacing issues and is contrived at some points). It was a very bold move to kill such a beloved character and the developer could easily made a ‘Joel and Abbi Buddy stories’ and everybody would have been happy. But they were bold enough to provoke lots of controversy they were clearly aware of that (Neil Druckman said once that not everyone would like the game).
But still, the story is definitely too long (especially Abbie’s part and the epilogue of the doesn’t need to drag on for several hours although I like the overall idea of Ellie going after Abbie again and leaving her happy life behind). Story 9/10, very interesting and thought-provoking story about which we will still talk in year. And with that, the developers made a much better contribution to the gaming world than “The Last of Us Part II: Ellie and Joel Road Trip Part II”

Overall, I would give the game 8/10. Fantastic Graphic and presentation, gameplay from 2013 and a bold but too long controversial story with minor pacing problems and plot holes.

The big problem about the controversy is the same with the The last Jedi (which I quite like by the way): Do writers want to tell a story they want to tell or do they want to tell a story the fans want? Or otherwise: who owns the story or the characters? The writers or the fans?

Thoroughly enjoyed the game, not perfect by any means but the story was bold and refreshing, in a time where storytelling has been diluted by predictable Marvel-esque writing. My main complaints were slight inconsistencies carried over from the first game's narrative and some insignificant pacing issues. Other than that, it was perfect for me, I loved it.

The complexity, nuance, and sheer ambition of the narrative is something I genuinely have never seen in a video game before, and the characters are among the most believably human in the entire medium. The creators could have made a straightforward follow-up to the first game with great success, but instead they chose to be bold, and to tell a surprising, unexpected story that needed to be told. This game is harrowing, emotionally draining, and has been circling my mind for weeks since I completed it. It's disappointing to see so many people take nothing from the narrative except "violence bad," because there's so much more depth and profundity to it. It's about love, hate, justice, obsession, and so much more. If you like games which strive to push video games forward as a legitimate artistic medium, The Last of Us Part II is a must play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since everyone agrees on the wonderful graphics and Technic-Specs of TLOU2 im gonna focus on the Story.
Heres the point: The story needs to work for you. It doesnt matter if naughty dog kills your favorite character or if you think that the characters act out of role because its all about empathy. You need to get over the fact that these characters are loved or not and accept that they are characters with a story and own emotions. This story is all about self-hate, revenge and forgiveness. Joels death is the necessary plotpoint the story needs to start driving. First the game wants you to feel the rage and the urge to kill every single one of the people involved in Joels death. Then the game wants you to play Abby, which many people struggle with. But in the end of the day the story workd for me, because playing abby made me not wanting to kill her anymore. Not because i started to like her, but because i understand her POV and her motives. Imma be honest and I hate to say this but: Joel deserved death. He betrayed humanity and killed a loving father. For Abby its te most natural reaction to want Joels death. At the end of Abbys part you beg her not to kill dina and ellie and thats what you get because she forgives ellie. And when you play ellie after that scene you dont want to play ellie because you stop wishing for her death. You stop wanting revenge because you feel the suffering from it. If the game gets you to feel this like it made me feel it it worked for you. And if it works for you this rollercoaster of emotions becomes a masterpiece.
8/10 bcs Gameplay became redundant. But the story works perfectly fine.
Ps: The last scene got me hard and if a Story gets you to feel this sorrow it is perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is a masterpiece if I gotta be honest. But only smart and wise people would understand that. And the game being all about revenge and forgiveness only shows who from us is capable of forgiveness and only those who don’t seek revenge see the deep meaning of the game. But those who were pissed at the end because they didn’t get their revenge and were pissed that Ellie was alone wellll that is the truth, that’s what happens when you seek revenge. Still her forgiving Abby in the end was a lesson for her. And she knew that she won’t benefit nothing from it. She was also just confused and she did what Joel was doing going after everyone who he crosses paths with. But in the End Ellie grew and moved on, and she let go which is a big moment that we need to appreciate and yes she did realize that in the end but still. And even if she did kill Abby and went back home being “proud” of it or whatever otherwise she still would be left alone. Because Dina couldn’t bare with it she choose vengeance over family and that she as heartbreaking for Dina. So in both of the cases happy ending is impossible but this sad ending was a lesson. And the game was so beautiful to be honest he fact that people didn’t pay attention to graphics and sound and detail and everything that ND had to offer and instead people payed attention to the BAD WRITTEN STORY/ENDING.

Expand

While there would be much to say about the superb graphics, the beautiful environment and its skillful use in mood-setting, the challenging but fair combat (which can be tailored to your preferences), and the crafting system which hits the sweet spot between being too simple and too tedious, the real star in this game are the characters and the story.

Contrary to what some critics say, the story of this game actually takes the ending of its predecessor seriously and explores its ramification. You get to know characters affected by these events, and the game makes you care deeply about them — so when at some point they clash with our protagonist, you really don't know whom to root for. The game also makes you actually care about minor characters on (almost) every side of the many conflicts in this game, which leads to many gut-clenching events which often made me pause the game to reflect on what had just happened.

Oh, and — time and again — no one gets the easy way out. And this is where the game really shines and literally earns its “mature” label: When a story starts with the supposed hero slaughtering doctors and nurses in a hospital, who are on the verge of doing nothing less than saving humanity, an ending along the lines of “we killed the baddies, now everything is fine and everyone lived happily ever after”, which you see so often in movies and games, and some fans apparently expected, would be juvenile and rather empty.

This game is not juvenile and empty. It is mature, and it actually has something to say. It elevates gaming from pure entertainment to art (that happens to entertain hella lot!).

I hope as dust settles people can see that the plot that goes "ok there's Ellie - the great victor and a hero overall and there're Abby - unquestionable villain and mf overall that has to be brought down" is as immature and unrealistic as that continuous marvel movies bs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not perfect, but it is damn good.

I don't want to spend all day addressing every single issue that people have raised with this game, but I want to pick a few that I have seen:

The whole Joel thing. Devastating? Yes. That's kind of the point isn't it? Yes we all loved Joel from the first game, but where does this sequel lead if he's around? It would just lead to a bit of a rehash of the first one and I, while I can't speak for everyone, would find that a bit underwhelming. The game needed a catalyst for a change. I think if it was a different character then the impact isn't the same - if it's Ellie then not only did Joel go through everything in the first game for nothing, but we are again left with Joel having lost a daughter/ daughter-like-figure. If it was Tommy then there isn't quite that level of loss for us as players and it doesn't hit as hard. Also, lots of people have pointed out Joel's sudden stupidity for trusting these people at the beginning when in the first game he didn't trust anyone. Yes, but they've been in Jackson for years by this point - he has clearly softened slightly. When your day to day job is to patrol and kill infected to protect people then surely when you come across someone in danger you would naturally defend them and when they help you too then your guard would be let down slightly and that's all it takes.

Playing as Abby. Yeah this felt a bit strange at first, but I grew to like it. I think the strength of these games is the story telling and through playing as Abby we get depth. This depth strengthens the story - rather than just creating a game about a good guy going after a villain we have flawed people embroiled in a battle in the darkness of a broken world. The only bit I didn't like about playing as Abby was the fight with Ellie - I understand that it becomes almost the "boss level" but it felt a bit odd trying to kill Ellie and I think perhaps this could have been a cut scene instead.

With regards to there being loads of plot holes (Joel's lack of awareness, Ellie dropping the map etc.), can we try to suspend our disbelief a little bit? It is a game and there needs to be a way of progressing the story. The characters are flawed and it is inevitable that mistakes would be made. Try to think this otherwise you'd end up getting caught up in every little thing such as not getting bullets from an enemy that seems to have endless ammo while they're shooting at you.

Overall I think it's an incredible game with a strong story. No, I don't think that it is quite as good as the first one, but let's face it - sequels rarely are better. It tells an intriguing story, it has a long amount of gameplay (which I haven't even mentioned - it is great) and it is incredibly immersive. One thing I would reeeeally stress is that you make up your own mind on whether you like the game rather than basing your opinion on what strangers are saying on the internet (I am aware of the irony of me being a stranger on the internet). You don't have to hate the game or be in love with it - you can just enjoy the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, I really enjoyed the game while playing it. The game illustrates the brutal reality that the setting takes place in where loss and devastation is very common. The many haters of the game who are upset by Joel's death fail to realize that his adverse demise shows how savage the world is. Just because a beloved character has died due to a golf club does not ultimately make the game so bad as innumerable people have expressed. In addition, the mechanics and the brutal fights made the game very fun to play with all the new additions such as hiding in the grass, climbing, jumping, dodging, and new moves in general. It provided the strongest emotional impact a game ever has due to its ability to form a powerful connection between Ellie and the player. To be honest, I did kind of understand Abby, not that I will ever like or agree with her actions. For instance, if someone killed Ellie, Joel would definitely seek revenge and if the game were centered on the person who killed Ellie, players would view Joel as the bad guy. Therefore, though I definitely don't agree with her, i do understand her. For those people saying that it was out of character for Joel to help Abby and let his guard down, his sense of security lessened after he settled in a safe place with Ellie so he is not the same as the Joel we saw in the first game. Only thing that I kind of didn't like was that I would like to play more as Ellie and found playing as Abby was a bit boring. Overall, I loved the graphics, the cutscenes, the story, fights, characters, acting, and sound. Expand

It is not a good narrative structure for nonplayers who just watch others play and skip files. It will be better to stop at the part that Tommy came to the farm and ask for continuing their revenge.

    Yes, it is.

Is it a good storytelling game?
Mmmmm, that depends on the player.

    Is the story not reasonable?

Laying in grass, and avoiding dogs are wonderful additions and allows for multiple styles of gameplay. The weapons bring some of the old ones back while adding a suppressed weapon and the crossbow. Story: the story while it can be hard to stomach some of the choices, it’s easier to understand as you go and while it breaks your heart early, I feel like that semi realistic game we had in the first is brought back in TLOU2 and I’m blessed to have played this game. I keep thinking that a change could’ve been made, but at the end of the day. I think they made the best story possible. I think if they had separated who you played into smaller sections leading up to the end. It would’ve been more to stomach. Plus throwing Joel’s death in so early on was a mistake. I feel like it should’ve been somewhere near the end when Ellie tells Joel that she wants to forgive him. I don’t write games or have any idea how to make a script. This game is great. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly i think the gameplay is very solid, probably some of the most dynamic I’ve played this gen, especially from naughty dog. Plus this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve played. However I feel the story falls just slightly short, I enjoyed everything in the ellie side of things except for when she didn’t kill abby. I feel the idea of her losing herself on this quest would have prompted a really good direction for a third game. However where it feel short for me was how they tried to showcase how EVERYONE isn’t how we perceive them, for example Joel wasn’t the good guy in the first game for saving ellie from abbys point of view. Ellie isn’t the good guy because She kills countless people, abby isn’t just the bad guy because she grows and bonds with the scars. And protects lev. The wolves are the bad guys because they’re just people too, the scars are just people regardless of how brutally they kills the wolves. It felt very heavy handed towards the end for me personally. I personally like the idea of showing the dynamic of ellie isn’t just the hero. And abby isn’t purely evil for evils sake. However I think if we really showcased that dynamic will just ellie and abby it could have hit home more, then ellie, abby, Tommy, lev, all the scars, The wolves etc. I also personally felt that the abby stuff dragged on, once the confrontation between her and ellie happened mid way through, I wanted to get back to see what happened there. I think if maybe reshuffling the way the story was told for example Day 1 show Ellie’s side then abby’s and continue that, that way it’s only a chapter in between that confrontation. And I feel like a lot of that drag would be gone with that set up. All in all it is still a solid game and worth the play. Expand

The game is a top notch high quality that you would expect from a typical naught dog game but the story is not perfect. They want you to like abby and hate ellie i think. I think the Abby playing section is too long. If they want you to like Abby is fine but they make you to hate Ellie. Everything else is perfect the game play , graphic and accessibility settings is very great. One thing for sure is you need to play the game if you want to decide hate it or love it. And it is sure one of the greatest Ps4 game of all time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I personally enjoyed seeing/playing Abby’s story because it made me realize how surprisingly similar her and Ellie are. It makes me somewhat understand why she killed Joel.(although it’s still rather upsetting that they killed him within 2 hours of gameplay, we haven’t seen this guy in 5 years and he’s dead within the 2nd hour?!). I can see where Naughty dog was trying to go with this and i do think they touched on some important topics in the game as well. I personally enjoyed their sort of nod to the lgbtq+ community with Lev’s storyline. I think it truly showed how some trans people are easily outcasted and shunned from their homes/communities due to things like that. I will say the ending did leave me feeling almost dissatisfied in a way. But in the same breath i think the cycle of revenge and hatred does that to any set of characters, it’s not supposed to be wrapped up in a bow at the end. I think the story telling could have obviously improved in areas but overall i think the storyline makes sense and i can understand why they make Abby such a vital character in the 2nd part. Expand

Almost week after completing the gameplay and I still can't stop thinking about it! You can feel that they loved creating that game. Amazing double journey in action, emotions and morality. It made me love post apocalyptic worlds even harder.

Awesome game with awesome story. Though I may not agree with aspects of the story mode, put aside, it was an awesome 30+ hours spent. Here's to hoping that this is not the end of LOU.

Esse jogo é maravilhoso e Humano ! Incrível o nível de realismo.
Ele pega as suas emoções, boas transforma em negativas e depois alivia é uma montanha russa. Muito intenso do início ao fim. Parabéns!!!

But the story is like a basic story of revange we saw in to many movies and games
They tried to show us the story of both sides (ellie's and abby's) but at least they could make joel fight a little bit . It's a **** way to die for legendary character lije joel.

I enjoyed it, challenged expectations, made me not like the way it was going but appreciated it by the end in the way it was done.

Love the chances this game takes with its story. Its a honest look at what humans would do to avenge a loved one. And the tool it takes on the mind. I don't get the hate. Not everything is black and white. 10/10 and thank you to the men and woman who put their heart and time into this game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
