This sequel does not resonate with me as strong as its predecessor, but it is still a really good game with memorable and emotional story.

I really liked the crafting system (proximity mines!) and I loved weapon upgrades. Even though I platinum this game, I still resent the separation of previous areas by impassable obstacles, that makes you rerun whole sub-chapter if you miss a card somewhere. I liked THE twist but was not happy with it. I really liked the "notes" stories that helps to build the TLOU world. My only issue is that the things that this game does best are the same things as in previous installment, I expected more improvements and innovation in gameplay.

Personally, I believe if the authors chose to write the same revenge-forgiveness story with different characters with Joel and Ellie cameos, the reaction would not be that strong. On the other hand, the story is meant to provoke strong reaction and in this NG succeeded.

The Last of Us Part II is the definition of the perfect sequel. A sequel that respects the first part, is having a dialogue with it, but achieves something different and unique by its own, while remaining an authentic The Last of Us experience.

Part II demands a lot from the player. You need to get into it open-minded and willing to play something different. That being said, Part II isn't different for the sake of being different. The directors took the risk of adding totally anti-fan service elements, knowing that they will be hated by a respectful percentage of players. Those elements are there trying very hard to make you feel unprecedented emotions; emotions that only a video game can trigger.

Not even once during the game did I feel that a certain agenda was being forced on me. Everything felt so natural, so "unimportant" compared to the purpose of the game. Certain sensitive social issues are presented with extreme attention and success. Anyone feeling triggered or annoyed, should welcome themselves to year 2020.

The Last of Us Part II stands worthily next to the first part as a game that serves its purpose flawlessly. Only Naught Dog could achieve such a feat.

I really think a lot of peaple just don't inderstand the story (maybe it was not told perfectly) but with a little effort and thinking you can see a deeper meaning and reasons behind both protagonists. Lots of parallels between them too
could tell a lot, but it'd be better to just play the game... that's also really fun to play!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great storytelling, great gameplay. Awesome graphical and gameplay improvements. Does NOT betray the original in any way. The story is more realistic, in the sense that revenge isn't a straight forward, black and white issue. Revenge requires the ultimate sacrifice and in the end, forgiveness is the harder path. This is the kind of narrative I like to see. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED TLOU2

I would first like to say that I am not a new fan of TLOU, I played the original about 5 years ago, and a few more times over the years, so I have been waiting for this game for a LONG time. I managed to avoid all but one spoiler (i didn't watch any spoilers but I saw a couple of comments on twitter), and sadly it was a large spoiler, but in the end I didn't let that deter me from playing the game because I know that context is extremely important. I am extremely happy that I played it.

I will admit that this game didn't go in the direction that I had originally expected and wanted. I was wanting a continuation of Ellie and Joel's relationship, a story about forgiveness and redemption after the ending of the first game. I wanted to see them grow as father and daughter and repair their relationship after the strain and distance caused by Joel's lie. However that ended up not being the case. You could argue that the game is about forgiveness and redemption, however it is definitely not in the way that I expected.

I think this game is an absolute masterpiece. GOTY material. I loved the sound design, the mo-cap performances, the visual design, everything. The AI has improved so much and it helped with immersion immensely, I was genuinely stressed throughout all the encounters and trying to strategise (and failing) each time I came across an enemy. The story is - for lack of a better work - intense. I've never known a game that could make me feel such intense and raw emotions throughout; I sobbed uncontrollably (if you know, you know), I laughed, I smiled until my cheeks hurt, I felt genuine fear, anger, pain, and I think most prominently, I felt an immeasurable amount of grief. Overall, this game f***ed me up mentally, but I think I respect ND for being able to do that.

I enjoyed the story. In my opinion, I think ND could have gone with multiple different story lines and it still be accurate, I think this is one of them. Consider this, in the first game it is made clear that Joel is a POS before he meets Ellie, he has been a smuggler, and a hunter, and has done who knows what. He has killed countless people; some innocent, some not. He says to Tess that they are survivors, but he was also a murderer. I think Joel dying the way he did was a very probable thing, he probably had so many people that wanted to kill him, Abby just got lucky finding him. Don't mistake this as me saying that I'm glad he died, I wish more than anything that it didn't happen, it broke me, and I truly think that he didn't deserve to die the way he did (maybe? I'm a bit conflicted. Finding it hard to look past my personal feelings). I think Ellie's character development was amazing from start to finish. I could feel her pain and her anger. Some things she did later on the game I didn't necessarily agree with, but I could understand why she made certain decisions and acted the way she did. She was angry with herself, with Joel, with Abby, everyone, and I could feel the development of those feelings throughout the game.

Abby. Personally, I can understand why she killed Joel, I mean, he literally shot her dad and ruined the chances at a cure for mankind. However, I think she had no right to take things into her own hands. Joel did what he did to save his daughter, he felt guilt for years after. Put yourself in Joel's position; you have traveled across the country and been through traumatic experiences with Ellie, and you have formed a bond with her that you haven't had since before Sarah died, suddenly you are told that the fireflies are going to kill her and you can't see her or say goodbye, and you will be killed if you try anything. Ellie & Joel weren't told ANYTHING about how they would make the cure. Joel had no time to digest the information. He acted as any father would, and saved his child. I personally feel that if Abby and Jerry were in the exact same position, Jerr would have done the same thing, and I wish so bad that Abby recognised that. I hate Abby for torturing Joel when he killed Jerry quickly, however a VERY SMALL part of me can understand the anger she was probably feeling. A lot of people like Abby after playing TLOU2. I am not one of those people. I can't forgive her for what she did, but I can at least understand her and recognise that she wasn't an all-round terrible person, she was just human.

The reason I gave this a 9/10 is because of the ending. After 5+ years of waiting I believed that we as an audience deserved something more than the extremely ambiguous ending we got. I know Neil has said that any ending we assume is canon, but I can't accept that. It doesn't console me in any way to think that what I want MAY be true, it doesn't help me deal with my grief. The only positive from the ending is that it opens up the game to a Part 3.

Overall, even though the pain I feel almost 2 weeks after finishing is very real. I love it all the same. Will play again.

Its not perfect, I could have done without the target practice 15 hours in, its a little bit bloated at times. But what this game achieves on so many levels will be a point of comparison for all AAA games for years to come. It makes you question your own morality and gets you talking for weeks after finishing it. I mean just look at how much this game has got people talking... If you're a fan of the first one you will undoubtedly LOVE this game. It really is something you need to experience. The Last of us story, both part 1 and part 2 as a whole, is simply incredible and quite Frankley, unmatched in the world of video gaming. This game really pushes the boundaries of players comforts and doesn't shy away from doing the unthinkable to tell a brilliant story. This is NOT a fairytale and it embraces that! It takes the player through such an emotional rollercoaster...

Unfortunately this is the main reason its been so slated. Sooooooo many people wanted it to this happy, loving fairytale game or even just a repeat of the first game. I take my hat off to Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog and anyone who worked on this game for this brave work of art. It is a massive achievement and a credit to everyone involved. And firmly smashes Naughty Dog as the BEST game developer. I've honestly never clenched onto a controller so tightly, or sat on the edge of my seat so far forward im damn near floating, anywhere near as much playing any other game to date than I did with this one.

And i loved the first one, Including Joel, hes one of my all time favourite characters in gaming and despite what happens, I still ADORE this game. I genuinely can't praise it enough. Don't let these "reviewers" put you off, most of these negative reviews were made before the game had even been out 1 day. Its a 30 hour game... theres no way they played it enough to form an honest opinion and just like most things nower days, people just jumped an the band wagon to be heard. I've already finished it and I'm over half way through on my second playthrough... and as i said its a 30 hour game. Now more people have played through it and formed their own opinion the ratings are shooting up. And if this game never got leaked in the first place im sure most people give it 10/10s

Anyway, In my opinion (and many many many others) this is THE BEST GAME OF THIS GENERATION and pretty much any game of any generation. Please, just go in with an open mind if you unfortunately saw the spoilers and just experience this whirlwind phenom.

The last of us part II is definetely a product of extreme effort not only when it comes to graphics and gameplay, but also storywise. It all makes sense. It is apocalypse. You are not getting roses and unicorns - you are getting death. With that said the game is much darker than its predecessor, but I liked that. I liked it because it is much, much more realistic. Just as any human being grows up with time as a slightly different person, a good game, book or movie should always strive to achieve the same. If you expect a fun apocalypse game that will keep you close and comfortable around your favourite characters(as the first one did) , this game might make you a little bit sad.

If you expect a high quality, realistic product - the kind that comes out only once every couple of years, then The Last Of Us Part II is worth the money and the time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a bit of a shame that you don't get to play as Joel for more than a few minutes. Joel is one of my favourite game characters of all time and it was heart breaking to see him die in part II.
At the time of that event happening in the game i was so sad and upset at the same time. It really made me hate Abby to bits and I couldn't wait for Ellie to get her revenge.

Halfway through the game you suddenly get to play as Abby which was so annoying at the time. However, as time progressed in the game and more events happened I actually began to understand where she was coming from. By the end I kinda liked her.
Abby actually has some pretty epic moments in the game. Especially when she goes down in the basement of the hospital where it all started. That was seriously a crazy, dark and claustrophobic place where you take on the rat king. It was so epic to use the flamethrower here - truly an unforgettable experience.

Ellie has her moments as well. She also gets some pretty wicked weapons such as the exploding arrows and trip mines. These weapons will rip people apart and it just looks absolutely mind blowing to watch. I can't remember a game that handles explosions so well.

I would have liked to see more of Santa Barbara since you are not there for long. I really liked the environment and the way the Rattlers were keeping infected on chains. It was really fun to release these infected and watch them chase the Rattlers down.

The story is not as good as in the first game but I do think the gameplay and mechanics are so much better. You can even go prone now! The game certainly feels way longer than the first one which is expected since there is currently no multiplayer available as there was in the first game. This game is one of those games that you HAVE to play. It sets new standards for sure.

The story is as polarizing and self-sabotaging as every decision the player character(s) and supporting characters make. The solution is simple: to be apart of the intense and passionate discussions surrounding TLOU2 in an honest way, you need to play it for yourself. You can't experience certain parts of the game through a youtube video--you need to be the one to hit square on the controller to fully experience it. Whether you like the story or not, you cannot deny that it is compelling and evokes extreme self-reflection. I truly grieved for each character the way I would for my own friends and family.

    The gameplay:
As a casual gamer, I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay mechanics. Compared to the first installment, TLOU2 is extremely inventive and provides endless possibilities to accomplish the same goal. There are much fewer monotonous "Go grab that ladder"-type scenarios. I've already played through the game twice and have watched while several of my friends play through it on my console, and each time I discover new details. The boss battles are much harder and more frustrating than the first one, but beating them is just that much sweeter.

Overall, this game will be the center of discussion for a long time. The initial wave of hate will die off, and Naughty Dog will continue to be one of the top names in the industry for their groundbreaking storytelling and thoroughly enjoyable gameplay.

The characters of this story become an expression of this concept . Ellie is probably one of the best ever written in videogame history: characterized, in such a credible way, as a tough and disenchanted girl but at the same time fragile and profound. Beautiful in this sense the scenes in which the guitar plays, vehicle through which he manages to find Joel (in particular with the beautiful Future Days of Pearl Jam which has a text that seems written for them 2). We see this character in constant search for a meaning in his life, which would have willingly given it in sacrifice for the good of humanity, drive Joel away, guilty of having prevented him. And it will be precisely this estrangement that constitutes a fundamental reason for Ellie's journey: it is not for the simple taste of revenge that Abby wants to kill, but because it has deprived her of the possibility of being reconciled with the most important person of her life, giving rise to her in a exhausting sense of guilt for excluding her for so long. Reconciliation that had started just the night before Joel's death, where the girl had in fact found the strength to try to forgive him. Just as in the end he will find her to save Abby. He will make it after a last minute flash, by Joel playing the guitar: this means that the memory of love and sweetness drives away the brutality that was consuming her and makes her come back human, allowing her to go on through acceptance and to abandon that desire for revenge that leads to nothing (and has taken away everything). Ellie finally understands which direction to look. Expand

From a narrative point of view, The Last of Us Part II opts for some daring prejudices, either by its realistic temporal approach which allows to highlight the difficulty of crossing such a world, or the fact of proposing a scenario particularly divider whose orientation should generate some lively debates. It is however difficult not to salute the execution, largely due to a gallery of successful characters and whose credibility is ensured by meticulous work of characterization and deepening. Cutscenes, gameplay sequences, optional exchanges or even scattered notes and documents: Naughty Dog does not neglect any support to bring depth to its scenario and its protagonists. These biases can certainly cause a few lengths, but these last demonstrate their usefulness at time of being moved by the fate of a character: without such work upstream, it is not certain that The Last of Us Part II would have managed to hit the mark with his narrative proposal. The Last Of Us Part 2 really earns that "Part 2" in the title, being less of a sequel and more of a continuation of the original, building on both the story and mechanics of the previous game for an incredibly engaging experience.

    To rattle off some bits;

-This game is dense with content, with a length probably twice that of the previous game. Despite this, I never felt that things were dragging on for too long or inundated with filler.

-The controls have been pleasantly polished, feeling less stiff than the original. They even added a dodge which comes in handy when dealing with infected. Like the original, the shooting feels great, and all the guns have a satisfying punch to them.

-Environments are a lot less linear now, with a smattering of optional side paths, encounters, and puzzles.

-The puzzles have been expanded on in terms of variety from the first game, with more platforming, rope swinging, and window breaking. The shiv doors from the original have been replaced with the previously mentioned optional puzzles as well as safes with codes hidden in the environment, so don't worry about using shivs this time around.

-Upgrading your weapons and abilities have gone through a sort of switch. Gone are tool boxes, so all weapon upgrades are available from the start (so long as you have enough scrap), but now you need magazines to get more ability upgrades. I'd say this is an improvement because you need a bench to upgrade a weapon (and there aren't that many benches), while you can upgrade abilities anywhere.

-Stealth has also been expanded, with tall grass being an option when trying to hide from human enemies. If you do get spotted, you can always run, as human enemies will lose track of you if you break line of sight (clickers not so much). You can also go prone, which I dismissed at first but found surprisingly useful when trying to get around ranged foes.

-I'll avoid spoilers, but the narrative is really engaging overall and does a good job of getting you in the head-space of who you're playing as and see where they're coming from. Be warned, this game goes to some dark, heart wrenching places, but leaves you with a lot to think about.

-This would be a 10/10, but I docked a point because the first zone of the game after the tutorial is this free roaming section that feels a bit too slow compared to the rest of the game, which I think could make a bad first impression (looking at you Pat). There are also a few too many walking sections that could have been cut down, but that's a minor gripe against an overall fantastic game.

    - I also miss the multiplayer ( ; A ; )

If you really enjoyed the first game, I'd highly suggest you pick this one up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not someone that ever writes reviews for games, so i think the fact that I'm taking the time to write this speaks of itself a little bit. The last of us was my favourite game, I loved the characters and I loved the complexities of their stories and personalities. The first game questioned the morals of all the groups encountered and provided some insight into Joel's history and implied his grey moral area. Joel was not a hero, he was just the protagonist. When he dies in part 2, I had to pause the game to stop myself from having a full blown panic attack, and my vision was blurry from rage. I wanted Abby to die immediately and painfully, but by the end of the game, I desperately did not want Ellie to kill her. I've never had a game not only consider the morals of the "villain" but then completely change my viewpoint and empathy. The story wasn't about revenge against Abby anyway, she was a distraction for ours and Ellie's grief and turmoil. Ellie hadn't forgiven Joel for the fireflies, and he died before she could so her emotions was redirected to killing Abby. I don't think she was out of character. I also don't think the plot holes were nearly as bad as some people think they are. The characters made "stupid" decisions because they are written as human beings, who, shockingly, make stupid decisions! I'm not saying its a perfect game, and if you didn't like it then you're well within your right, but I do feel sorry for you that you can't appreciate this game for what it is. Expand

Some games transcend genre, and "The Last of Us II" is one of those games. "Survival Horror/Survival Action" is not typically on my radar. I'm an RPG and sports game guy, but when a huge game like this comes along, I usually give it a shot. I played the first installment in this series on last gen, and I liked it a lot, but I don't remember liking it as much as "The Last of Us II".
    STORY:

I'm an RPG and sports game guy, but when a huge game like this comes along, I usually give it a shot. I played the first installment in this series on last gen, and I liked it a lot, but I don't remember liking it as much as "The Last of Us II".
    STORY:
Somehow, Naughty Dog is able to go out of its way to be more "inclusive" than a junior college brochure without being obnoxious. I fell in love with all of the protagonists, and in the final analysis, the individuality and humanity of each character shone through enough to make me forget any intent of the writers to try to check all of the politically correct racial, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc boxes. That's quite an accomplishment in itself, and puts the focus of the story where it should be in my opinion: to make the audience identify with the characters, or at least feel what the characters feel. When that happens, the importance of group identity falls by the wayside, and the common humanity within all of us becomes the focus.
    GAMEPLAY:
This game kept me always feeling like I was just a bit under-practiced and under-prepared for the combat I was facing, which I suppose is what the survival genre is supposed to feel like. The controls are intuitive, the game plays very smoothly with minimal glitches, and I always felt challenged and engaged.
    GRAPHICS/SOUND:
I'm not much of a graphics snob, but in my humble opinion, this game is BEAUTIFUL. Again, minimal glitches. It's obvious that an incredible amount of care and attention to detail was put into the creation of this world. The score in this game is excellent: as I'm looking back on it, I "felt" it more than I noticed it, and that's a high compliment in my book. The choice of soundtrack and the performances of the songs were just right. A few memorable ones, some of them tear-jerkers.
    OVERALL THOUGHTS
This game is not perfect. It's a video game. However, it's close enough to perfect that it might as well be. I can't imagine a much better product being made with current hardware. There are certain small gripes I have with this game that are mostly just part and parcel of the genre that this game belongs to. However, this game is more than just a survival game in the same way that "There Will Be Blood" is more than just a movie about an oil man.
"The Last of Us II" made me enjoy doing some things I thought I wouldn't enjoy, appreciate some things I thought I'd cringe at, and feel some things I didn't expect a game could make me feel.
If that doesn't sound appealing, then you probably shouldn't buy this game.
How this game could have an average user score of 5.3 at the writing of this review is beyond me. Like I said, I'm not deep in the world of this genre or this IP, so maybe most fans of the original were expecting something completely different. Regardless of their expectations, to not have a healthy respect for the sheer quality of craftsmanship this game displays is puzzling to me.
