Absolute perfection, intense and violent so be aware of that but just an incredible achievement overall.
Ignore the bigots and haters who haven't even played the game otherwise you'll be missing out on an incredible experience and almost certainly the best game of this generation.

I thought what he did was criminal and cruel and i actually wanted justice against him. This game shows both sides of the story And emphasize on humans tendencies to take sides without even caring about the motives that stimulated the other side. Here you don't just see black and white. There is no villain. You will find out that abby was stimulated by the same motives that stimulated ellie. All the atrocities both did was to avenge or save their loved ones. That made me unable to pick a side. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 is a near masterpiece but not perfect - technical aspects are a step up from the original, and the plot/story take some gutsy moves, which may or may not pay off (most did but some did not for me, which I explain below). This game requires a deeper study into its story and themes; "revenge bad" only scratches the surfaces of what the game is about.

Gameplay is largely the same as TLOU1 with some noticeable improvements; level design and environmental puzzles are far superior than TLOU1 (no more tedious ladder/pallet finding, or obvious waist-high crates for cover). Human AI is pretty good at the harder difficulty as they will flank you, call for assistance, and use stealth themselves. Infected are largely the same except that bloaters and stalkers are more aggressive (shamblers feel pretty much like bloaters from the first game). The semi-open world is clearly a 2nd iteration of Uncharted: Lost Legacy (the previous ND game to feature a semi-open world); it was definitely fun exploring it, but probably not worth doing it a 2nd time.

Overall I still think TLOU2 is worth a playthrough so that you can form your own opinions. It is quite difficult to critique the game having watched someone else playing it, or reading a plot summary etc. since there are so many details which are easy to miss, including many instances of foreshadowing. Out of 10, I'd probably rate it 7 or 8, definitely not a 0 or 10.

    ==SPOILERS BELOW==

First, it is worth briefly discussing Joel's death. Obviously we hated watching it, but it felt justified: Joel did a lot of shady things and it would eventually come back to bite him. Basically, this is TLOU, not Uncharted. Why would Joel give his name to a bunch of armed strangers? Well, blame Tommy, who revealed both their names to Abby. Obviously Joel is a changed person compared to the first game, but we still see his skepticism (e.g. he wanted to "ride out the storm and get out of your hair", then later asks "what are you all doing out this way?").

Second it is worth discussing Ellie's and Abby's sides and why we play half the game as Joel's killer. Abby's story is "one step ahead" of Ellie's; Ellie seeks a path of revenge, while Abby's story details the consequences of that revenge and how it didn't bring Abby closure (until encountering Yara & Lev). The reason we play as Abby is a bit more than the cliche "two sides of the same coin"; we are additionally asked to see the parallels between both stories and how they intersect each other. I actually dug Abby's story and even though Abby doesn't know Tommy/Ellie are hunting them down until day 3, it was fun to see Abby's side knowing that we already visited and interacted with the same people and locations playing as Ellie. One issue is that I couldn't really care much about Owen and Mel since we know they were killed at the end of day 3. Owen's conversation with Abby in the boat contained some nice foreshadowing regarding Lev but besides that I couldn't care much.

The Santa Barbara chapter annoyed me the most; gameplay-wise, it had the most ludonarrative dissonance, since Ellie is the most upgraded at this point (in terms of max health, weapons/upgrades), yet in the story she is weakened and had been impaled and hung by a Rattler trap. It would've been more interesting to play the Santa Barbara chapter with no weapons, reduced health, and forced to rely on stealth or the Rattlers' clicker hostages (which I didn't realize you could unbind them until my 2nd playthrough).
At this point, Ellie likely went to Santa Barbara not with the main intent of killing Abby, but escaping her months-long PTSD/nightmares and finding closure. Was leaving everything behind to travel 1000+ miles, again, except all alone really the best way to do that? However there's some interesting situational irony here: if Ellie did not go to SB, Abby and Lev would be dead, but Ellie ended up freeing them. Perhaps the game could have ended at the farmhouse with Ellie struggling to cope with PTSD but with Dina at her side, and Abby could have bitten off her fingers during the theater fight. Tommy then arrives with knowledge of Abby's whereabouts, we cut to Ellie contemplating this, and the game ends.

The ordering of flashbacks within the main storylines was interesting and I'm not sure if it paid off for me. Ellie's flashbacks (especially the museum) were brilliant and probably should've been placed at the very beginning (perhaps with the hotel as a tutorial level). The current order made me ask why Ellie would go lengths to exact revenge on a person she had cut ties with, which made it obvious (along with some Ellie/Dina dialogue at the beginning) that Ellie had at least begun to reconcile with Joel.

However there are so many story elements that worked: the portrayal of guilt, forgiveness, how thirst for revenge can destroy a person and their relationships. I think with some changes to the above issues it would have been a 10/10 for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    [Spoiler Ahead].

First of all, I didn't had the chance to play the first part because I did not own a PlayStation since PS2. Now that I got one, I played both games. And I kinda don't understand why people are so mad at the game, reviewing the story as week and the characters are poor developed.

I know the game try hard to "humanize" Abby, and the motives that made her search for revenge etc. But for me, the plot itself is just what could happen in the real world. I mean, everyone has their motives and a line of thought that made they try the best they can to achieve an objective. Joel was a "bad man" for a lot of people, as he was good for a lot of people too. But he kinda was selfish doing what he did to save Ellie.

He could die in a lot of ways. I see how bold the game was, not giving him a memorable death, beautiful speeches and cutscenes etc. His death was cruel as the world of TLOU is. As a lot of other characters too.

Anyway, this game is a masterpiece for me. Because it's bold, unpredictable and as close to reality as possible.

People here are just complaining cuz the didnt get their fairytale ending? That's what it looks like. Why do they say the story and characters are badly written? Sure, the first game is superior, but by no means TLUS2 is a bad game, kinda dated in the gameplay side of things, but still a solid game.
I'll be the first one to complain about SJW agenda on hollywood and mainstream media, and yet it didnt seemed forced as many people are saying. It had been established since the first game what Ellie's sexual preferences were and tbh it didnt matter.
Storytelling is pretty good, they make us care, you want ellie to get revenge, I dont mind Joel being dead, it gives tha player motives and it follows up from the TLU and Joel's decisions to not let Ellie die to save humanity. Cause and effect (no fairytale BS like many man childs here seem to want).
it perfectly sets the scene for this game, revenge, either by Abby and by Ellie. Along the way both of them lose friends on each others quest for revenge.
Another complain is having to play as Abby, while i Admit her playthrough is kinda dull, is good to know both sides of the story in an effort to understand every character's motivation and goals.
And finally the last complain "why go through all of that if you are going te let her live?"
I am, by no means a genius, but cmon you guys need to pay more attention to the story. When fighting Abby she has a final flashback about Joel that causes her to spare Abby. And from that we learned that Ellie confronted Joel about saving her from the fireflies a day before his death, basically telling him that she would never forgive him and pausing and finally saying that she will like to try it, explicitly saying she was on a path of forgiveness. Joel at least died knowing that.
Killing Abby would've continued that path of revenge and wouldve made Ellie make the same mistakes he resented Joel for.
In the end she loses Dina and her child, all for revenge.
But narrow minded people only seem to care about Joel dying, SJW propaganda and not even try to understand the whole picture is IDIOTIC.

I loved the game. And I was very shocked by the flood of bad user reviews here, thus decided to write my first review ever to give some more input for people to make an informed decision.

    Graphics, Music, Sounds and Animations

They are simply phenomenal. The animations are not one finished set simply played back, they are made up from all the things your character is currently doing or is close to in this world in a way I have not seen before. E.g. she (your character) wants to jump an obstacle and her left foot would be the dominant one judging from the state of her walking animation, she uses her left foot which ties her into the surroundings so fluently. And the amount of sound feedback you get, when just walking through a plastic curtain adds to that. They even thought of the dust on the floor. Crawl through the dust, it gets wiped away.

Sometimes this animation-combo may look wonky though, there are some occasional graphic-glitches and in certain areas the walking speed doesn’t match the animations, but nothing too serious. 10/10

    Gameplay

It is a consistent improvement of the first part. You feel the same, but everything is better. You have the additional crawling state to be even more stealthy, different heights of grass to dive into and more corners to cut, like cracks in a wall, or crawling under vehicles. Players may also consider this state for your accuracy: Crawling = highest accuracy. Plus all the “arenas” you are in when engaging enemies are now much bigger (as is the world in general). And some of the fights and enemies are special and need different approaches. You really get to engage situations in a lot of different ways.

Physics play a bigger role in the riddles (Cue the rope physics examples) and the distinction between stealth- and walking-phases are broken up. Expect enemies at all times, even when using a workbench. And don’t expect them to be just one faction, keep your guard up at all times.

Paired with what I said about the animation, I got the sensation I had years ago when first playing a game with fire damage. Just. So. Cool.

Having said that, the gameplay is sadly also the weakest part of the game. There is definitely missed potential here or some much too obvious flaws and it does feel repetitive at times.

The riddles are scarce, short and simple. Even getting into the stash rooms or getting safe combinations is not really something that gives you a rewarding feeling in the end, compared to God Of War for example, because it wasn’t that hard.

Enemies get instanced in chunks to steer your experience, taking away your agency. There is one level where you go down a destroyed building and my sniper rifle and hearing could really have given me an advantage here, taking stalkers out from above, but no, they only appeared once I reached the level they are in. In these moments you realize the designers are being in control over your game in a way that is just too obvious.

And one really annoying detail: Sometimes you have to hastily move around a specific item you want to pick up for your character to get just the right angle to finally do it. Bummer.

Overall: Very cool experience, some nasty flaws. 7/10

    Story

As with all Naughty Dog Games by far the best part of it.

I don’t want to say too much here, because spoiling this story will take away everything that is so good about it. But I will say this: It is a long and challenging tale that feels epic and meaningful. It is a slow burner, with lots of ups and downs, that really make you feel. You feel upset, you feel happy, you feel relieved, you feel heartbroken and so on. No twist is arbitrary, everything makes sense. Especially the biggest twist in the beginning.

It starts out as a revenge story though. And if you're not on board with everything your character does, you feel forced by the designers to do something you don’t want to do - e.g. probably sooner than your character, you as the player want her to grow and “be the good guy/girl”. You don’t even get the option of “not acting”, sometimes forcing you to do unspeakable things. That may be crossing a line for some, especially paired with what I already said about feeling steered by the designers. But it’s also not something spoiling the story itself.

Lastly, the storytelling via exploration… it’s perfection. You can spend hours over hours looking at a decayed apartment, reading its inhabitants last notes and imagining what might have happened there. Perfection is all I can say.

Altogether easy 10/10. Would give more if possible.

So overall 9/10, gameplay being the biggest flaw. It’s definitely worth the money. Play it, judge for yourself.

Also: I wouldn’t mind playing a sequel or spinoff with a certain bulky someone at its center.

The last of us part

Whiny manchildren are upset when the story didn't go their way, the story definitely tried to alot with the character developments, while it's hard to watch, it is in no way bad, just one that is emotionally gut wrenching and maybe could be improve if the second character was more developed. It was never going to be better than the first game, it would've been impossible.
Gameplay and graphics improved massively as well, so fun wise it is an upgrade either way.

This game is a masterpiece. Playing on the PS5 the graphics and gameplay are top notch, a marked improvement over the previous game.

The overall story was amazing, I didnt read any spoilers so did not know what to expect. But it really didnt disappoint and I was very satisfied how it ended. Though it did drag abit, I honestly thought the game was about to end 50% of the way through.

The new enemy type SCARS were a challenge every time you encountered them in a good way. Enemy would actively spread out and try to flank you. You need to be really strategic to take down a group of them, or be very good at nailing your headshots.

I think the infected are probably the worst bit of this game. Clickers can seem to get alerted to your presence even if you are stationary which I found frustrating at times. An they introduced a few boss infected along the journey too, which were basically just bullet sponges that you just throw everything you have at them then run away. Repeat until boss dead.

In summary, better game play & graphics than the 1st game. I think the story is better overall in part 2, but the story was told better in part 1.

If you think the story is "just another revenge story" or "the ending was pointless," then you absolutely missed the whole point of the game. And you probably missed it because the well was already poisoned and you were trying to make it fit into one of those unoriginal revenge stories. It's unoriginal, yet people are mad cause it didn't end the way "it should have." Give me a break. Don't want to spoil this game anymore than it already has been, but definitely worth a play. Gameplay is very similar to the first - linear. But there are some more open areas. The first game's story is also better, but this game does something no other game has done, and young gamers didn't know how to feel about it. Just play it! Expand

If someone wants story about super heroes then there is a lot of such content already written. If someone prefers to see how real life can look in a post apocalyptic world, then he or she should play this game. Emotions that this game creates will last for long after the game is finished. This is the story about love, about attachment, about hate about (lack of) forgiveness but especially about revenge, No one is a winner in this game (even a player). Joel and Ellie share one unique story amongst billions within a pandemic, post-apocalyptic world. As much as we grew to love them both and shared their experiences, we could have just as easily shared Abby's story on TLoU Part 1. If that were the case, knowing what most of us know now, we would have hated Joel without having known his story, along with a different opinion of his character. Love and hate must co-exist and sometimes it comes at a cost. That is the natural order in which we live. Joel knew that he effed up, which is why he couldn't bring himself to tell Ellie the truth. He was blinded by love, anguished still by the death of his daughter and Tess. Joel was not about to lose anyone else that he cared about and he would prevent it by any means necessary. At the end of Part 1, Joel became the biggest monster of them all. We, as the player, couldn't really comprehend this because we were so involved with what he saw, to the point where we were forced to chose what he had already chosen to do; completely immersed in his hatred to the point where he had forced us into being the bad guy. This is who Abby saw, and we were never there to witness her agony. TLoU Part 2 is the aftermath of bad decisions and their repercussions. It's gut wrenching and it will break you down. But if you're gonna rate it, don't base it on the characters human retributions. The game-play is solid, with new features and the new workbench weapon upgrade system is the best that I've seen. My 8 rating isn't for just how much I love it for all the new in-game features and abilities, but for how much I l LOVE to **** hate it. It's a story that I feel will stick with you, long after it's over. If you can't handle a dose of dark principles, go play some Mario Kart. I will rate again after I've finished the game. Expand

-The semi-open world exploration section was brilliant and allowed the player to explore at their own pace. The chapter can take either 40 minutes or 3-4 hours depending on the optional locations which you can explore.
-The shooting mechanics in Last Of Us 1 felt more arcade-y while in The Last Of Us 2 the shooting mechanics are more realistic. The weapon customization is simple but not intrusive, and give you a greater advantage over enemies.
    - Heavily improved animations in game-play sections compared to The Last Of Us 1. They feel more fluid and due to the technology that Naughty Dog have used, there is minimal input latency (one of the cons I had with Red Dead Redemption 2)
-The game is much more gory and grotesque, as it should be in an apocalyptic setting like this.
-Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson once again give a superb performance. Laura Bailey also portrays the newcomer Abby very well too.
-The audio design is probably my favourite of this generation, from the echoes of the clickers through the hallways of abandoned courtrooms to the gargling noises made by enemies after Ellie hits them with a stealth kill. It's brutal.
-The Last Of Us has upgraded visuals over its predecessor, but it is able to keep the same visuals as its predecessor when it comes to character design. The environment detail is unrivalled and the reflections in the water are beautiful.
-The story is very cinematic and the set-pieces throughout are brilliant. There were moments throughout the story that were shocking and boosted the story, and in my opinion it works. If I could split this into three acts (Jackson, Seattle, Santa Barbara), the third act shines and leaves some interesting tidbits for a potential sequel.

    Cons:
-The game-play is brilliant, but however can become repetitive due to the structure of the encounters being relatively the same. Some of the exploration puzzles are sometimes repeated but not too often to become annoying.
-I would've liked to see more customization options in the game, specifically pertaining to characters. For both character upgrades and weapon upgrades, I wish that New Game Plus wasn't a necessity in order to unlock all upgrades. I want to be able to upgrade all of Ellie's skills and weapons in the first play-through in order to use them in New Game Plus from the beginning.
-I played the difficulty on Hard and it was a very challenging and rewarding experience, however I believe the difficulty specifications should be adjusted. Playing New Game Plus on Moderate+ is vastly easier than Hard+, and Survivor+ could be infuriating frustrating for the wrong reasons. Props to Naughty Dog for allowing a custom difficulty where you can tweak certain aspects, however.
-The content of the story is brilliant and I bear no problems with any happenings to the main characters. However I believe the structure of the narrative is off and certain moments could come in different order.

    Improvements?
-Similar to the Batman Arkham Series, it would be great to feature some bonus Challenge Levels for Encounters.
    - I want to be able to replay a chapter and grab the collectibles I missed without resorting to deleting all game progress beyond that point in the story.

Thing is though it'd be the same if the characters weren't "SJW" they'd still be naff characters so try to look past that and take the game on its own merits.

Anyway my first 5 hours with the game had me ready to write this off as an exercise in frustration. Right off the bat if you're not into stealth games you're probably gonna have a bad time. It can be very unforgiving and some of the combat encounters can feel a bit laborious. Once you get further in though it all feels like it clicks into place and you get a real feel for what you're doing. For me the story was a harrowing experience but very well delivered subjectively of course.

In retrospect I've dropped the score down to an 8 as the more I've thought about it the more niggles have cropped up. The tendancy to lavishly animate literally everything wears thin and ironically lends an air of uncanny valley when you're doing something quintessentially videogamey like crafting or upgrading. What you're doing isn't especially realistic within the time frame so it's odd to see it played out with hyper realistic animations. I'd rather they saved the fancy animations for the meat and potatoes of the combat, exploration and social interactions. Would save the players time and likely cut down on unnecessary Dev crunch.

Also the game could stand to lose a few hours and would probably be better for it. Plus some of Ellie's behaviour and decisions later in the game I just couldn't quite suspend my disbelief on which took me out of it a bit.

If you're in the market for a decent stealth game with oodles of exploration and insane visuals with a good story to boot then you're in for a treat. Just be aware that it's extremely heavy going emotionally and is very stealth focused.

Although I am not rating this game high I still believe it is one of the best games created for the current generations. Game play wise we do not see anything new, just tweaks, adjustments and additional already existing mechanics from games we know but they still give this new feeling especially considering the first game. Graphics, Animations and music are beautifully implemented and you can once again immerse into the world after the fungus apocalypse. Now it is time to review the story, which is the main reason for poor user reviews for the game. I have to say that although I liked it, I was still missing the main reason most of us loved the first part, which is the relation between main characters. This game is almost twice as long comparing to the first part but still it feels like it took to little to make us feel connection between our main protagonist Ellie and the rest of the characters. I especially feel that second half of the game is focusing too much on something we as a players do not really care about. This part of the story should be much shorter and time and money spent on it could dig deeper into secondary characters included in the story that will resolve in more effective way of connecting us to Ellie's feeling during the play through. Main driver of the story is vengeance, plot point known for ages and used multiple times that we already know that it has two sides. I think that this is the main reason this game does not fulfill our expectations as the moral of the story is known since ages and we are treated like it is some kind of new discovery. In my opinion if the story had more time to focus on old and new characters for most part of the game and do the vengeance part towards the end this game would be 10/10 for sure. Unfortunately this did not happen and we are left with a great game but with flat story that comparing to the first one does not leave you thinking about it during the credits. Expand

The reason why people are complaining is because they were expecting the standard "hero journey" type of narrative, that revolves around a hero who suffers but prevails in the end. It's sad to realize that the public in general is not prepared for something more mature and realistic. LIFE IS RANDOM AND NOT EVERYBODY GETS WHAT THEY DESERVE. That's the whole point of the story, that most people are just missing or, unfortunately, don't have the necessary "stomach" to appreciate.

That said. It is not a perfect game. Although I'm able to see past its flaws, a lot of people have not been able to and that's their opinion.

In the end, the majority of the hate this game is getting is from people who had a specific expectation and didn't get what they expected / wanted. Instead of being open to something different, they lose their mind.

I'm glad it's not a paint by numbers revenge story. I'm glad I was surprised while playing the game. I may not have liked every surprise, but when the entire experience was finished I was glad I played the game.

It's a great game. It's not perfect. People need to stop losing their minds over characters that they do not own. Joel does not belong to you.

The game came out on June 19th and will take the average person at least 25 hours to play the entire game. Reviews are marked "June 19th" as if that gave them more than 24 hours to play the game they think is bottom of the barrel trash that a 0 rating implies.
Almost every review is about not liking the narrative likely because of the leaks. Yet even if the story was terrible there is still the amazing rest of the game. The combat flows better, feels better, and still makes you feel like a badass.
The animation is stellar, the voice-acting is stellar, the cinematography is stellar.

People hate the narrative probably because Joel dies within the first section. If I were to guess these people wanted more Ellie and Joel time and this part killed them. Little did they know that they still keep that dynamic with the flashbacks. Not only that, but there is no other character in the game which could be able to drive that same hate Ellie feels for Abby if it wasn't Joel.
The game succeeds spectacularly in everything it tries to do and if anyone tells you otherwise they are not only lying to you, but to themselves.

An impressive technical achievement that still manages to deliver effective and simple, yet arguably dated gameplay, with a story that shows moments of brilliance, yet is overall marred by poor writing that feels contrived, forced, self indulgent, and overly moralistic.

    pros:
    - excellent graphics
    - incredible environments to explore
    - dated, yet IMO still effective gameplay - an extension of TLOU's tense resource scarce combat and exploration
    - some very good story moments (in particular the flashbacks) that will make TLOU fans nostalgic - the game is arguably worth playing for these alone.
    - The game tries to do something very daring in its story, which is a good thing. As is the inclusion of new characters who are openly transgender (no, not Abby, but another new character), and who do grow close to you as the game progresses.

    negative:
    - very badly told story with a ton of "WTF, why did they just do that?" moments that are obviously out of place, are unintentionally funny, and appear to be included solely as a means to get the story moving
    - some unlikeable new characters that give nothing new to TLOU universe
    - The game attempts to make a player question the point of violence, yet does this by never giving you a choice in key moments, and makes the possibility for complete stealth gameplay (no kills) virtually impossible (eg. in order to fully explore an environment and gather resources you will have to kill all enemies, otherwise full exploration is near impossible. The game thus forces you to play in a certain way otherwise you will either not progress, or will miss half of its contents - significantly, this is not due to difficulty, but rather a failure in game design).

On the whole if the story writing and screenplay had been better the structure of this game could have really paid off... I found the idea of having a main character killed off early, and playing a part of the game as the antagonist, actually quite good - it is just how this is done, who these people are, and what they do that makes you laugh due to the cringe, which is an unintentional outcome of the poor writing.

It gets an 8 due to the fun gameplay, incredible environments, great voice acting, and graphics... having finished the game it did manage to leave a profound effect, as the overall experience was still enjoyable despite the serious pacing and storytelling issues.

Technically it's a masterpiece, the acting and mo-cap are excellent, the attention to detail and level of polish is exceptional. It takes clever gameplay elements from the first game and makes welcome improvements in multiple ways. In an industry with a lot of mediocre releases this game does stand out from the crowd, and it doesn't surprise me that critics loved it.

Users have been more divided though, so let's next cover the elephant in the room: no, this game doesn't have "an agenda." Honestly I've asked lots of people what they mean by that and I've yet to receive a coherent answer (unless you count "the existence of lesbians" as an agenda). This game has flaws, but they aren't related to politics in either the game's themes or its creators.

So why did this game not match the excellent first game? Well there's 2 things you need to realise about the story. Firstly, many games centre around player agency but TLOU2 has fully fledged characters and instead invites you to walk in their shoes- whether you agree with their decisions or not. The first game did this too (I remember much ranting about the lack of choice at the end of that game), so this isn't inherently bad game design, but it could cause frustration. Secondly, this game is about revenge but it isn't about catharsis of *achieving* revenge. This isn't Taken or John Wick where revenge is the flimsy excuse for a bad-ass character to leave a trail of violence. Instead it's really about obsession: about pursuing revenge to escape something else; repeatedly characters throw themselves into courses of action in order to avoid something that is really hurting them (in the 2 main examples it is avoiding grief by pursuing revenge, well past the point of rationality, but in 1 case it's really to avoid an awkward conversation... yeah I know.)

So Naughty Dog had an ambitious idea for a story- make the player walk in the shoes of characters who are running from their emotions, who act abhorrently, who the player has reason to hate. It could have worked too, but I think (personal theory here) the reason user scores have been so divided is because ND tripped themselves up in the story-telling, and as a result they didn't manage to bring everyone along with the story in they way they hoped.

I'll avoid specific spoilers, but despite dramatic early events the first part of the game is actually a slow burn. There isn't much tension between the characters present then, so all of the narrative tension comes from the distant promise of pursuing revenge. But on top of this, the game heavily uses flashbacks to flesh out story points. Taken on their own, these flashbacks are lovely and beautifully written, but in the pacing of the game they feel like interruptions. In the Left Behind DLC of the first game flashbacks worked really well- but that game alternated between 2 time periods. In TLOU2 each flashback is to a new vignette- requiring exposition, setting, and sometimes new characters. They feel like side-quests that interrupt the flow of the main story. And this leads up to the first big problem: a significant story moment occurs midway through TLOU2 where the writers take their first big ambitious leap- and it feels at first like another sidequest. Rather than engaging in the dramatic new perspective, I think many players played on wanting to get back to the "main" story- and thus missed that, actually, the story was now going in a completely different direction to tell a completely different message. Miss that turn and everything in this game's second half feels incoherent.

Having said that, this game also loses a point for the 3rd act, which either wasn't long enough or was too long. It had its moments, but it lost all momentum and the final big moments felt more like a whimper than a bang. Again, if you had missed the change in storytelling direction 10 hours earlier the ending wasn't just limp- it must have seemed utterly detached from the "revenge story" of the early game.

So overall, exceptional game in many ways but over-ambitious story that it couldn't quite pull off the telling required to make it land with everyone, and an ending that works better on paper than in delivery. A sequel to a rightly beloved game that fell short of that standard. Nevertheless one of the better games I played this year and it deserves 8/10 (far worse games have scored better!)

Fighting is heavy, brutal and harsh - you can feel adrenaline with every bullet and every hit. Music and sounds are extremely climatic, graphics are absolutely next-gen and the faces haven’t been this real in any game I ever played. Characters are real, authentic and genuine. The general feeling of guilt and despair is there whatever you do. I would only like to spend slightly more time with Ellie. We’ve waited for so long to see her again and yet she wasn’t in the spotlight all that much. I guess it was more of a story about violence, hatred and revenge than about this poor girl. Weapons and gadgets are interesting.
The game went quite slowly and long to me. The story is simply long. When I thought that’s it, it appeared that there was still much left. Iis it good or bad?
The most mixed feelings are of course about the choice of narration and control over opposite camps in the game. Decisions feel irrational and illogical. But we don’t have a choice here. I couldn’t put myself in their shoes.
There is this feeling at the end of the game that creators threw themselves into a deep water and couldn’t fulfill the task according to expectations.

The story is divisive for sure but this game was not supposed to be a rehash of the first game. The first game was all about Joel opening up and learning to love again and Ellie transforming herself from an innocent kid to someone who has seen terrible stuff and grown a lot as a person. There was this great dynamic between the two and the game was rightfully praised for it.

The second game is not a rehash of the first one, it goes in another direction, the themes are not the same. This time the game addresses how far people can go for the people they love in the context of a terrible pandemic that has destroyed the world. It's also about how society re-organizes itself after having crumbled and what can happen to people when they are desperate to find a meaning to their lives and they live in lawlessness. It's very powerful and I love that Naughty Dog took the risk of changing the story's themes like this. You're supposed to be really mad about what happens at the beginning of the game because it's something that could totally happen in the context of the game, it makes sense because that character has a shady past and is capable of doing terrible things so what happens to that person could very well happen in this broken world where everyone is on edge. In the end I think it was worth it in order to explore how terrible the human nature is. Not every game can be happy-go-lucky and "save the princess" games. The game also tries to challenge your pre-conceptions about the « heroes » of the first game by showing both sides of the story. I find it fascinating and the new characters are well written.

The graphics are the best I have even seen in a game. The game is fluid, the combat is great. I love how you have to adapt your tactics all the time depending on whether you fight against humans, infected or both. It's fun to make noise to set the infected on your human enemies and let them fight between themselves and just swoop in and take the last ones remaining. The progression system for weapons and Ellie's abilities is well done and the weapons at your disposal are nice for varied tactics. The level design is great and the exploration is top notch. With so many beautiful maps to explore, I just can't get enough. The sound design is awesome, especially in dark narrow areas with infected and spores, it gives the game an atmosphere that is unique and unmatched in triple A gaming. Of course the music is very beautiful and will hit you directly in the feels several times.

Overall, I think this game is my favorite of the PS4 along with Uncharted 4. I love how Naughty Dog refined their gameplay, added new features and took big risks with the story. I respect them for that, they didn't simply rehash the first game to please people. Concerning all the progressive stuff that Naughty Dog included in this game (Ellie's sexuality and having strong female characters), I can only respect them for not shying away from making statements on how we should all be more open-minded and respectful of other people's differences. The game is supposed to take place in 2038. The idea that societies would reverse course in terms of open mindedness after a pandemic and would become more ignorant and hateful towards non-heterosexual people is very interesting and frightening. Not many game developers would have dared to do explore this theme. Thank you Naughty Dog.
