This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game today. I really loved the story and found it to be very emotional and moving. I went in blind... never read any of the spoilers or leaks so everything was surprising a new. Honestly, I can see why people didn't want this fate for Joel and Ellie but it doesn't make me love them any less. Dramatically, having Ellie lose Joel is heartbreaking and is really the only thing that could drive her on her single minded quest. It gave the story unexpected weight and consequence that I never expected.

And, yes, the decision to have you play as Abby really was challenging at first... but I did come to love her as her stay progressed. She and Ellie are more than people seeking revenge... that would be too simple... these are people suffering from severe PTSD and their only way to deal with it is to hack and slash through their nightmare world.

The scope of the story and set pieces are as amazing as everyone has said. The combat is as fun as the original and even smoother.... really inspired to play through and again and to master the weapons and combat even further.

Like a great book, I already miss being in this world with these characters... can't wait to see what Naughty Dog does next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really don't understand the hate. I love this game. It's one of the best games I have ever played. I'm on my second play-through. I probably played through the original six or seven times.

To address some of the complaints you may be hearing:

Yeah, Joel dies and it sucks, but, that's a crappy world they live in and I'm surprised that he stayed alive for that long.

Plot holes? The story is a bit complicated, with multiple timelines, but I didn't notice any holes in the plot. I am a bit confused as to why people are confused.

Like many of the people on here, I too was apprehensive at first playing with Abby. However, by the end of the game I began to understand her and respect the writers' message despite them killing off one of my favorite video game characters. At least he didn't get infected. That would have really sucked.

I do not think that Naught Dog has some sort of SJW agenda. This game included characters of all types. It's kind of like how the world is right now. What's wrong with that?

The violence...Well, the game is violent, super violent, and I understand that it could turn some people off, but it didn't bother me at all. I'm also a former paramedic and now an ER nurse so I have seen death and the aftermath of violence for many years. I'm probably desensitized.

The visuals are absolutely amazing. I am spending a good portion of my second play-through taking screenshots attempting to be some kind of photographer in the game. It turns out that I am just as awful of a photographer in video games as I am in real life.

I think the gameplay was great, and improved, zero complaints, but I am also used to the gameplay from the first game.

My only complaints to Naughty Dog: Stop being so stingy with the tape! I need to make more arrows!

All in all, I give the game a 10/10 and I stand by it. You may not agree, but, one of the cool things about this world is that you don't have to agree. For those that have yet to play it, give it a shot. It's a game. It's a story. It's an experience. And it will definitely leave you thinking.

That being said, the story somewhat lags throughout the middle, and can keep the player feeling bored and unmotivated to continue due to the pacing. I think a chronology shift would have made the story significantly more enjoyable to play through and experience. The gameplay is an improvement from the first game, but nothing groundbreaking. The graphics are fantastic, and the facial animations often look extremely real.

Overall, I'd say this is really worth a play, or at least to watch an LP on Youtube to experience the story. It is worth the outcome, no matter how it seems from afar.

I have never felt more emotions playing a game ever before then when i played through this one. I genuinely feel bad for people that will never get to experience this game as it was intended because they couldnt wait a couple more days to form their own opinion. At its worse this game deserves nothing less then a 7/10. For me it is 9.5/10 only because the skilltrees and weapon customization could have been better. Other then that everything, and i mean EVERYTHING about this game is masterfully crafted, the experience is like no other. Its a shame Neil Drukman and the team at naughty dog had to realize the hard way that they crafted something amazing for one of the worst most retarded communities on earth. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The short version is that I really enjoyed this game despite its flaws. It's not perfect, but I don't think it deserves the ire that it's receiving.

    Let's start with the bad.

    Inconsistent gameplay:
    - I came across a few bugs, the worst one being an animation glitch where Abby kept trying to draw her weapon and ended up looking like she was having a seizure. There were also a few times where Ellie teleported across a door to open it or got stuck in an animation while opening a drawer or cupboard.
    - The platforming is pretty bad. Considering Naughty Dog's experience with Nathan Drake, I expected better. The jumping feels slow and unresponsive, and many of the platforming puzzles require you to sprint and take off at the end of a ledge.
    - Stealth mechanics could have used a bit more polish. There were a couple of times where I was crouched behind a wall, completely out of view, but then suddenly the combat indicator went off without warning. Thankfully these issues weren't super common, but the couple of times they popped up came as a nasty surprise.

    Storyline:
    - It's a long game, the middle portions really drag on, and pacing feels all over the place at times. This is most apparent when you switch to Abby after 10+ hours of playing, and the game feels the need to reeducate you on how to craft items and toggle your flashlight. Also, I'm not a big fan of flashbacks within flashbacks. It just feels like sloppy storytelling to either retcon something or to make the player empathize with the character without earning it.
    - Too many characters and not enough development made me wonder, "Who cares?" Abby's crew consists of Owen, Mel, Nora, and Manny. Owen gets a decent backstory and Manny brings a few moments of levity that add some personality to his story, but the rest of them feel like cardboard cutouts. I actually forgot who Nora was when I got to Abby's storyline because she was such a minor character.
    - Kill hundreds, spare one. Similar to the Uncharted series, The Last of Us Part II struggles with the moral gray zone of its protagonists mindlessly mowing down hundreds of people and balking at the idea of killing one more person. With Lev watching Abby, it made sense, but Ellie giving up on her revenge mission after sacrificing her family, her friends, and even herself (or at least her fingers) felt a little weak to me. I get that not all endings should be satisfying, especially for bad people who do bad things, but it did feel like they were setting Ellie up for some kind of redemption arc only to let her return "home" to an empty farm.

Alright, so now let's talk about the good.

    Graphics:
    - It's genuinely one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The setpieces are incredible, and the water effects both while swimming and in the rain are breathtaking. Artistically it sets a new bar for games.

    New Mechanics:
    - Ellie and Abby's new agility made for some genuinely tense and exciting gunfights. I typically favor stealthy builds, but this game forced me to play more aggressively with less predictable enemy routes, dogs that can sniff you out, and far more limited resources. Many of the arenas also had a lot of verticality, so I found myself constantly finding angles or flanking enemies. The gunplay feels familiar but polished, and the cat-and-mouse evasion routes didn't get old for me even after 25+ hours.
    - The rope physics are really cool! It's not a very prevalent element of the puzzles, but the "Aha!" moments of using wires to climb something felt super satisfying.

    Plot:
    - Alright, let's talk about the plot. Abby murders Joel in front of Ellie's eyes. It's a visceral, gruesome moment. Since I avoided spoilers, it came as a huge shock to me, but it didn't feel cheap or shoehorned in. It felt like the culmination of all the people he killed to get to his happy ending in Jackson. I believe after 4 years of living a comfortable life and watching Ellie grow up, he got a little soft and even learned to trust people. You're talking about a guy who cleared out a whole museum wing just so Ellie could sit in a capsule and listen to an audio recording of a shuttle taking off. He changed a lot.
    - To anyone complaining about roping in political, SJW plotlines, remember that Ellie "came out" during the Left Behind DLC. If you're a true fan of the series, you'd know that. And the bits about Lev - His character shows the most development besides Abby and Ellie, and it feels earned. If they wanted a superficial trans character added to their game, they would have made it Nora or Danny or some other random person, and they certainly wouldn't have given them an entire chapter of the game.

All this is to say that I enjoyed my time with the game. Do I love the direction they chose for all the characters? Not necessarily, but I respect their decision, and I think the story is impactful and powerful. If you really believe it deserves a 0/10, you must not play many games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the game. I enjoyed the story. I learned to like Abby. It's not the popular opinion, but this was an enjoyable game for me all-around. The story kept me invested despite the twists, and I found the internal struggles of the protagonists to be really interesting. I found charm and humor, and a solid 30 hours of entertainment. I don't like that Sony tried to silence people discussing the leaks. I don't like that they tried to strongarm content creators. I don't like that forced reviews of only 40% of the story were the status quo.

But I enjoy the game. It made me feel. It made me think. I understood what the characters were going through. I felt for Abby. I understood why she hated Joel. I understood that while playing with Joel made him my hero, I. Abby's world he represented evil and hate. Is this a generic message? Yes. It doesn't change it is an idea that has been prevalent in discussing our humanity, and has been since the beginning of time. Ellie's decision at the end made her strong. Joel made her strong. Abby wasn't just a heartless killer, she showed more compassion to Ellie than Abby ever showed her. Maybe it upsets people that Ellie would be presented in such a sadistic way, but the fact remains that Abby showed her a restrain and compassion that Ellie didn't show Abby until the very end. The end represented Ellie holding on to a little of the humanity that Joel sacrificed himself to save.

These are my genuine thoughts. Find me on YT.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

TLOU2 won me over in a completely different way than the first, with its humanity, terror and emotion. This game blew past my expectations and has taken the first ones place as my favorite video game.

Gameplay is smooth, fun and more challenging than the first one. All in all the same basic mechanic with a few new features. Plays well and this story has a lot more horror than the first one that only added to my experience. The only downfall is I felt a section or 2 of the game had slight pacing issues but nothing that was blaring or took away from my experience. Incredible graphics, fluid and dynamic game play utilizing the best in motion matching and animation, as well as an incredible display of sound design, level design and detail, features and accessibility. It is clearly a labor of love from Naughty Dog, and the best technically from the studio. Aside from a couple of small gripes and issues (such as not being able to switch shoulders when not aiming), it's as close to perfection as you can realistically get.

In the story department, rather than rehash the first games story into another version of itself as many fans might expect, the game uses the fundamental interactive nature of video games to do something different and risky - use the player's emotions against them in a sort of meta analysis on the tribalistic nature of mankind, loss and grief, as well as the player's own perspective in this story. I can't help but be compelled to draw comparisons between the pain Ellie feels of being robbed of a chance to reconnect with a loved one, with the pain many player's feel of being robbed of the potential connection they were hoping to have with this game based on their expectations.

The story sets up many assumptions, and then through perspective switching and flashbacks, asks you to question what you "know": will Ellie really achieve what she sets out to accomplish; what makes a "bad" person, bad; what separates "us" from "them"; is tribalism inherit or learned; and finally - is forgiveness more powerful than revenge?

Many will say the story is bad, or has plot holes, or is just pandering to an audience - I disagree (mostly because nobody has been able to clearly articulate why these conclusions are true). But even if these things are true, the story deserves praise for being different and daring to try something radical with a medium that is fundamentally more powerful than anything traditionally. I suspect that much of the hate the game is receiving is based on this expectation of normalcy shattered by an attempt to wrench the player through a traumatic experience - an experience that many may unwilling to examine past the initial shock, which many may be trying to pin on the game itself, rather than what's it's trying to communicate.

Many hate this game simply for not being what they want it to be. That's fine - because not all media is designed to be what you want, and I think that's great.

Given the impact it's already had a mere 6 days after release, I'm excited to see what kinds of discussions this game generates moving into the future.

Its not better then the first, but its a solid sequel. It will trigger all sorts of emotions, like the first one. Dont let Joel dying stop you from trying it. There is definitely room for improvement. But a solid 8/10 regardless. Spoiler!!!

I feel that this is a game that you can’t judge based on reviews. This is an experience that the player needs to witness and decide on in their own mind. The game is not perfect, suffering a bit in some poor story decisions, but where it falls behind there, it makes up for it all with its impressive visuals and great gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game an interesting way of telling the story of the last of us. The game reminded you that it is the character's choice not the player's choice. It forces you to make decisions that you may never agree with. Puts you into the shoes of the person you would think you would have no empathy for and manages to take you from the side of Ellie to put you in between the conflict between Abby and Ellie. The game is not supposed to leave you satisfied, its supposed to leave you thinking, you're not supposed to agree with Ellie's choice to spare Abby, you're supposed to disagree and think about Ellie's choice. Ellie never got to forgive Joel like she wanted to, and sparing Abby was a way for her to do that. Joel's decision not only took Ellie's death away from her but took Abby's life away from her. If Ellie felt like she couldn't forgive Joel, she understood that Abby couldn't either. And because Abby never had a bond with Joel, Ellie knew that Abby would resent him. Ellie understood Abby and Abby understood Ellie, which is shown when Abby offered to help in the end. They took from each other, and one of both of them ended their cycle of violence. That's what this game is about. The cycle of violence and how it goes full circle, and how forgiveness breaks that circle Expand

The story isn't for everyone--I have to admit, I had some complaints while playing--but I warmed up to it, and, in the end, I loved it more than the first installment. It forces the player to understand and sympathize with the person who wronged Ellie, and it does a fantastic job of making you care for both the protagonist and antagonist. Another thing is that Ellie is a fantastic lead character. The way she fights is desperate and brutal, and it really adds to her persona as a total badass. Anyone complaining about an "SJW agenda" is just immature and needs to realize that gay people exist and that they're normal people. So I recommend this game more than anything for its story because that is the most important part of the game, but I don't think the wild twists and turns will please everyone. Its visuals, combat, and cinematic scenes make it worthy of a purchase in opinion, though. Expand

For the most part, I am enjoying The Last of Us: Part II but it is sadly not my Game of the Year for 2020.

To begin with, Naughty Dog pushes the PS4's hardware to the limit as the game looks absolutely amazing (played on PS4 Pro) with beautiful, realistic environments, fantastic lighting and life-like characters. The inclusion of a photo mode is a great addition.

The game play has improved, with new abilities such as jumping, climbing and going prone to crawl. These additions are not ground breaking or unique and we have seen them in other games before, but their inclusion does improve the overall experience, especially stealth. The combat and stealth mechanics work well and I had a lot of fun with the stealth segments.

I also appreciate that pills, or supplements, used to buy new skills and upgrade abilities, becomes more common to find, especially considering that now, you have access to multiple skill-trees. The environments are also quite large, offering multiple paths and optional areas to explore. The music is also a delight, a mix between calm and beautiful, to eerily uncomfortable.

The characters are all performed well by their respective actors, and while the overall story is competent, it is not nearly as strong as the previous Last of Us, released in 2013. I find that, despite some of the performances, I just did not care at all about some of the characters.

My biggest problem with The Last of Us: Part II was that the A.I. partners would frequently get in my way, disallowing me the ability to move where I needed to go. This was especially frustrating in hostile environments, such as trying to hide from an enemy about to spot me (one of my A.I partners would be blocking the path), or when I tried to seek cover, an A.I partner may unintentionally block me from cover, resulting in me being seen, getting shot etc. This wouldn't normally be that annoying, or maybe I'm just unlucky, but it happened in almost every combat encounter I experienced, when I had an A.I partner with me.

The game is quite lengthy, averaging anywhere from 20 - 30 hours to complete, depending on your chosen difficulty, how good you are at the game, and if you're using guides or not. This is kind of a good and kind of a bad thing. Some people may appreciate the longer time, giving them more of a story they might enjoy, while some might feel that the game can overstay its welcome at times and become repetitive, which is what I found. I like long games, but with formula of The Last of Us: Part II, it might be a little too long for my taste. It's also a massively sized game, a physical copy of the title comes on two discs, a data disc and a play disc, and the install for on a PS4 is 95GB, so you better free up some space r get yourself an external hard drive.

There is also a New Game Plus mode, which allows you to replay the game with all of your acquired weapons, weapon-upgrades and skills, albeit the difficulty will be slightly increased higher to accommodate for your advantage.

I think The Last of Us: Part II is a good game and I don't believe it deserves all the hate it's receiving, but I also don't agree with fans claiming that it's the perfect game. It's pretty good, but it's sadly not mind blowing. I thought the first game was incredible and it was certainly my favourite game of 2013, so perhaps my expectations for this game were a little too high.

If you're a fan of The Last of Us, and/or if you enjoy action games with stealth, then you'll probably like this.

My score: 8 out of 10.

I just finished this avalanche of excellence, this Mariana trench dive into the most obscure aspects of human nature, this monument to detail, craft, and unparalleled storytelling.

The Last of Us II is the new measuring stick for videogames; the depth of the characters is surpassed only by the stunning game art and uncompromised graphics. The game's detail and clarity take the PS4 Pro hardware to its limit; you can often hear the machine redlining, struggling to keep up. I, too, struggled to keep up along it, facing a riveting story of vengeance, hate, and rage, a true tour de force of purposeful violence that would give Tomas de Torquemada a run for his money.

I believe this game is the best I have ever played and might be the best created. Finally, I will say that players' negative reviews are precisely why expert critics exist, to praise art and excellence when commoners simply cannot recognize it. Only fools would not know this game for what it is, a 10/10 magnum opus that stands alone, at the top, with no peers.

They really did a good a good job making a point that actions have consequences, as a result of the actions of Joel in the first game (killing that doctor who he didnt know, in a pure rampage of hate and selfishness) Abby kills Joel in the same way he killed her father. Even further that quest for Ellie in search for revenge ends up killing her friend Jesse, crippling Tommy and ultimately losing Dina and Potato in a last attempt of revenge. Even further she loses her fingers by Abby, rendering her useless when she has to play guitar, the thing she remembers Joel most.
Abby´s quest after killing Joel is simmilar to his victim, after doing incredible harm to the victim´s family, she feels guilty and tries to regain her humanity through the innocence of a child called Lev, sound familiar? This kid stopped her bloodlust from killing Ellie and Dina, giving her a chance to live her life once again, but its hate that ultimately makes Ellie´s worst fear come true, she ends up alone.
What I did not like was how they treated Joel´s death, it could´ve been better if he had put up some kind of fight, killing some wolves before he gets shot. Also the order of the flashbacks felt a little weird, which takes some point for me, the game is not perfect but it sure as hell is incredible.
Graphics are out of this world, the fact that I felt disgusted by every infected, by every wolf that Ellie killed with her dagger is awesome.
Gameplay is significantly improved with stealth, going prone and making distractions never failed to make me smart, also the jumpscares and tension this god dam game made question if I could continue playing.
Overall the game is incredible, but not perfect, a solid 9 out of 10.

I love the characters, of course I missed Joel but he will be in our hearts forever. Gamer community, please, cut with the **** Great job, Naughty Dog. Expand

No one game has caused me so much emotion like TLOU2. This is really heartbreaking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK, I finished the game two days ago and I going to give my opinion not gonna be defending or whatever. At least for me I am happy with this game so much, I not saying I'm happy for Joel's dead but hey what can you expect for someone that doomed humanity and killed the father of the person who killed him? I'm also not saying he deserved to die, I mean I loved that character and I still think he became one of the biggest icons in video games but decisions have consequences. Going back to the decision, It's a super hard choice most of the humans would have done what Joel did cause think of it... sacrifice a daughter, son, or any family member to save people yo don't know? Yeah, it's super hard but still in our inside we'll know that saving humanity is the right call. For me what makes this game unique is the fact that is something different by not giving you the stuff you will really wanted to see, not everything can be a happy ending. Finally, thank you Neil Druckmann and the Naughty Dog team for making these past seven years of waiting worth it. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
