If you've been spoiled by now but haven't played the whole game, I truly recommend you play the game before leaving that bad review or hating on it. As the days go on I'm seeing more people complete the game and more positive reviews coming in. (Not saying you're in the wrong if you don't like the game. But don't be someone who leaves 0/10 before even finishing it)

    Anyways, highly recommended imo.

I have to say it was a reality shock when I played the game, naughty dog really made me realize that not everything is a fairy tale where there is a hero who does everything right and saves the world in the end, she really did a good job demonstrating how cruel the world can be, I always waited for a different ending with joel and ellie together, but that wasn’t it, that made the game more real, the real reason ellie didn’t kill abby wasn’t because of a moral lesson but because she realized that revenge only generates more revenge. the gameplay is almost the same as 1 but improved in everything

Even though the game was incredible there were some bad points like: * artificial intelligence, honestly naughty dog promised something revolutionary but ended up making the intelligence end up being a little laggy * the game makes my ps4 look like an airplane turbine, if you don't have a ps4 pro, know that the game suffers from some bugs like flashing textures and framerate drop * They focused a lot on humans, it really is not a big problem since the gameplay is good and brings incredible moments but the game forgot that they are in an apocalypse with a lot of infected * Items are not scarce, they promised more immersion in the game but it helps you at all times, when I played I always had a full inventory because I thought so many * The difficulty, both ellie and abby are super sodiers, they can take 50 shots and still stay alive, that takes away some of the realism even though the game had some errors it was a good game, maybe not the best of the year but one of the best

I really don’t understand the majority of hate towards this game. Maybe people are too attached to some of the characters of the first game (which understand as the first game incredible) and are upset they aren’t involved as much as they’d like, but even so I enjoyed the new characters enough that I didn’t mind that some others took a step back.

I love Ellie and liked Joel, but what he did at the end of the first game was a hard decision but a wrong one. Killing Fireflies who fought for a future and a Doctor who was so precious in these times was unacceptable. It was tough how he got killed, but frankly, it was only a matter of time before someone demanded revenge.

So it was Abby. I have to say I didn't like her in the beginning, but in the end, I did. And I was glad that she survived the game thanks to Ellie. Both paid a high price for their revenge.

For example, after Joel Ellie lost her Horse Shimmer, Jesse, her ability to play guitar, her relationship, and almost Tommy. He lost an eye and his leg is ruined.

After Jerry Abby lost her Dog, Alice, her love Owen and her friends Manny, Mel with her baby, Jordan, Leah, Nick, Nora, after being tortured by Ellie? Nora lived after we hit her three times with the pipe because Ellie returns to the theater and says: I made her talk.

Anyway, it was a tough and long journey. Can't wait for part III. Thanks, Naughty Dog.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t know why there is so much hate from users about this game. Yes is sucks that Joel got killed and how he was killed, but that is what is supposed to make the user feel Ellie’s pain and seek revenge. Mission accomplished. While playing Abby’s story, you see a bit of Joel and Ellie in her relationship with Lev. Ellie chooses to show some compassion as she sees this relationship in the end. Ellie is left alone, sad and with no real purpose left in her life. What would getting revenge have gained her? Another Joel and Ellie story would have been fine to appease the masses, but I thought it was nice that the devs tried to move the game forward beyond just the 2 characters. I guess you will either love it or hate it. Either way, the game is a technical marvel. It’s the most gorgeous game I’ve ever seen on any current platform. The combat is fun, anxiety enduring, frustrating, and a blast to play. All of the tiny details painstakingly put into the game are amazing. Imagine how much time they spent coding the rope and cable physics alone into this game. The controls are fluid from crafting, to switching weapons, to interacting with the environment. Animations are all spot on and create a real world feel. The cutscenes are the beat I’ve seen in any game. The atmosphere just draws you in. Did I mention the visuals? Jaw dropping on a 4K OLED panel with HDR. If you don’t play this game for the reason that Joel died, you are doing yourself an injustice. The game is truly a masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me this game is a Dark Masterpiece.

The creators did something risky; they flipped the video game troupe on its head. In nearly every game, we the player and the protagonist mow down, the quote on quote bad guy without really thinking anything about it. But in Last of Us 2, we get to understand the "bad guys" perspective and see their motivations.

Now to the biggest part in the game, The Death of Joel. This was heart wrenching and rage inducing, but something made me pause, it was the anger the "bad guys" had, it made me pause and wonder, Joel what did you?

And that pause and that question made me have a more open mind.

Getting to play as Abby at first was disorientated, I did not want to play with her, she killed Joel, screw her, but as I progressed and I saw the other members of her crew and what they were about, how certain members were disturbed by what happened in Jackson, some were just fine. Others had their own goals, like Manny looking out for his father, Mel trying to figure out how to be with Owen and how her pregnancy was viewed by her members. It was that look into their worlds that made me start to see them as more than just killers but as people trying to survive in this chaotic world. It also made me very conflicted about the fates they would soon suffer

    Back to Ellie

What took by surprise was how Naughty Dog really showed the traumatic effects of PTSD. They did this in Ellie's diary, how she described her thoughts how Joel, how she remember him and sadly every single thought or remembrance was one of jarring pain. Time can heal words, it can take the sting of a traumatic event and either reduces it to a small dull ache or a forgotten vapor. But PTSD takes that traumatic events and put you right to square one, day one of the intense pain. Pain so intense that you lose all sense of where you are, pain so intense that it continues to eat away at the very core of you bit by bit. That was beautifully illustrated by the reappearance of Ellie at the Farmhouse. She was gaunt and weary, she had no therapist to turn to, no bar to go to, no medication to help with the mental anguish, all of the modern conveniences of the modern world were gone, and sadly nothing she attempted to do could help her with her perpetual anguish, except one thing.

Ellie was born into a brutal world, there is no law but survival and anything or anyone that means you or your loved harm, must be killed. Simple as that and for her the only way to quell that anguish is to find and kill Abby, even if it cost her, the hard won peace and happiness she found with Dina.

Now back to Abby – Her design as a character for me was smart, Naughty Dog did not design her to be a classic videogame female beauty like Elena or Chloe from Uncharted, they did not want to rely upon looks to convey any sense of empathy for her, instead they relied on her all consuming quest to find the man who murder her father, who murder the leader of the Fireflies, the man who destroyed her whole world, Joel. And also the aftermath that followed. They relied on showing her vulnerability and her fear of heights, and finally they relied on her redemption arc, to save to two kids, even if they were her sworn enemy.

    The End.
The jarring parts of this game was the illustration of what blind rage fueled obsession can bring, and that absolute dissolution of person as the continue on that path.

The absolute most jarring part, was the end.

Ellie finally finds Abby, and Abby is longer a She Hulk of a character, she is withered and beaten, all of her rage, of her strength, even her trademark pony tail is gone, she is a broken shell of herself, and sadly even as Ellie sees this broken version of Abby , she still cannot let go of her pain. They have a truly sad and Ellie has a pyrrhic win, and just right at the moment where she can finally kill Abby, she has a warm remembrance of Joel, finally a memory that is not jolting, but one that sees him healthy and ok.

In that moment she lets go of it all, the hate, the rage all of it.

I see a lot of negative criticism for this game. I really think people cannot hyper-impose their reality into a world that is completely different than there's. The sad thing is that people really are missing the point when it comes to how people truly deal with trauma, everyone is different. Everyone will handle it different and Naughty Dog attempted to show how pain and obsession can have some very devastating effects to not only the person dealing with the pain but also to those around them.

I say play it again, and remove that thought of what you would do, instead realize you are truly witnessing a tale of descent...

A tale that was beautifully told.

The story was done really well and let's you see the moral ambiguity that many characters have. Everyone is likable regardless of what they've done or will do. The gameplay feels like its gone through a bit of a tune up. It is still much like the first but enjoyable enough to not notice it hasn't taken the biggest leap. Infected are still a really big issue much to the chagrin of the people who said they weren't.

The story uproots and lays bare difficult conversations that the gaming industry (and gamers most importantly) have only began to address and unpack; bigotry, misogyny and self-entitlement. You don't have to look far to see that this story has ruffled the most toxic feathers in gaming; whether hacking servers, click-bait articles, reviewing bombing, whinging reddit threads or (you guessed it) a petition to rewrite the story. Clearly the industry and community has plenty of work to do and I applaud Naughty Dog for not seeking to please gamers - but to make them stop, think and challenge themselves. Controversy is good. Si quieren acción sin trama vayan a ver porno o a jugar Call Of Duty.

Unpopular opinion: This is a great game. It is actually a really awesome example of truly immersive impactful gaming and storytelling.

The detail in level design and world-building is beyond anything done before IMO. This game takes you from forests to skyscrapers to aquariums and much much more and everything feels lived in and immersive. True, the gameplay can be repetitive at times (find supplies, craft, sneak, kill repeat) but again the level design and beautiful animations and atmosphere, as well as just an unbelievable amount of lore and details, make it all so so worth playing and experiencing!

But hey I know this **** storm is all about the story and people are upset clearly, so here goes: I honestly have enough distance to the source material (the first game) to be able to say that the story in this part 2 DOES NOT SUCK...this is a story of revenge but also of humanity and how in times of huge crisis we are always at risk of losing that humanity as people have different views and hardships and end up killing each other for what they believe in to survive. But at the end of the day, every “villain” is simply a daughter/son/father/mother, etc. they are human with emotional background and more or less relatable behavior and backstory. In this game maybe for the first time ever has a developer made a HUGE effort to give every faction (even zombies a little bit) a human backstory. The revenge and vengeance are just part of the story, it is also just about the horror of warfare and the divide of humanity in general. You truly start to feel the impact of your killing of enemies in this game instead of 99% of other games that throw mindless hordes of flat “bad guys” at you, that you will kill with no one ever questioning the act of violence and killing.

Ok truly, I agree Joel deserved to go out with more of a bang but It sounds like everyone has forgotten that he literally went on a KILLING SPREE of the people trying to save humanity from a horrible virus?!?! Joel is a good guy and loves Ellie more than anything so it made sense for him to save her BUT all of those lives are lost too and they had a similar love for their people so it only makes f***ing sense to highlight that trauma instead of just forgetting it ever happened and moving on living happily ever after. Joel’s story was beautiful and unfortunately, he got punished for his decision but that’s what happens in the REAL world and this is at the end of the day a story that may very well play out similar in a real apocalypse scenario ( that is what real lifelike immersion should try to do). Please go ahead and try to change my mind. I don’t get why everyone is crying about what the story is not...IT IS a lot of effort by a lot of passionate people who made a tough decision to go a new route in this game. Why can you not accept a new compelling perspective that tells a more broad story of survival and hardship?

TL;DR: This is a beautiful game with a compelling immersive story that is worth experiencing for yourself. If you have the narrow mindedness and expectation of a zombie the story may not do exactly what you wanted BUT I promise you this game shows in every scene the accumulation of years of creative passionate craftsmanship in gaming.

I initially thought I was the only one who felt Joel's regret when he disclosed his name to Abby and the group. The things that followed happened so quickly that I didn't get to ponder much upon it but having Troy and Neil go over it surely stemmed in me the depth of storytelling that took place in mere seconds. Istg I can't stress this enough, but massive massive humongous props to the Dogs for making those few seconds matter so much. Joel was still as, if not more nuanced than the previous game. I just finished the game and I am both and I am left changed. The story tackles delicate themes like revenge, grief, and violence on the side of Ellie's of view, while at the same giving us the protector feeling that we fell in love in the first game through the relationship between Lev and Abby, regardless of what anyone could say, last of us is the most gorgeous looking game the video game industry produced up to now, and everything frombthe sound designe to the mocap, all the way to th the AI, be it ally or foe, is flawless. The game is everything you could ask for, and both fight between Ellie and Abby ar made me want to tear up, because I didn't want either of them to die...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I truly loved this game, even though it left me feeling emotionally exhausted. I'll definitely be playing it again, just probably not for a few months. The story was superb, the only thing is that I would argue that it could use some re-structuring to avoid some emotional whiplash.

My biggest complaint is that we weren't made to care about Abby before she killed Joel. We should have cared about all of her friends before Ellie killed them too. To me, that would have made playing as Abby more enjoyable (I didn't really come around to her until Yara and Nev were introduced) and it would have made it more devastating to see Ellie kill the rest, particularly Owen and Mel. When I first started playing as Abby, I legitimately went out of my way to get her killed because I just despised her. Even though I knew she was a good character with relatable motivations, I couldn't get over her killing Joel and then Jesse, who I really did like as a side character even though he was only around for maybe 20 minutes total.

The gameplay was just a better version of the first game with more fluid movement (still not perfect, but better) and a few more mechanics/enemies. The graphics were gorgeous. The dialogue was great. Even if the story was out of order, I loved the characters and they were very real. Even though I wanted to rip my hair out a couple of times, it made sense to me that neither women were willing to lay aside their revenge. And by the end, Ellie's actually become more of a villain, which was a reflection of how Joel lost his way and went to **** after Sarah/before Ellie.

Even though it hurt and it was difficult, Joel's death made sense for the story. In a lot of ways, it was a bit of karmic retribution for all the bad he'd done. Most of which we as the audience don't know about because it wasn't the focus of the first game. If we'd followed Abby's story from the beginning and not known the man she was hunting was Joel, she would have been a sympathetic hero from the start. By the end, I loved her almost as much as Ellie, which I think was impressive considering how much I disliked her at first.

I would actually say this game is between a 9-10 with its weaknesses, but it's closer to a 10 than a 9.

Although it’s not as tightly written as the first installment it’s a wild narrative that speaks volumes on violence and loss while also being extremely gripping. Not once did I find myself bored, maybe scared or thrilled or depressed, but I never wanted to put down the controller. I also don’t think it was perfect but mostly because of specific segments that had me dying too much or being confused on where to go next. But the combat in this game is brutal and most of the time feels as real as a fame can get. The story is the subjective factor responsible for most hate towards the game. Joel’s death and Abby gameplay is the most hated aspect. But if you’re open minded to what this game has to offer you would enjoy the ride because this is one hell of game. Expand

On the gameplay side, it's more like everything Naughty Dog has perfected in this generation of console, they bring it on the table then expand it. The combat is fierce, whether you go gun blazing or like me, I prefer stealth, every encounter both with humans or infected will make your heart pounding literally sometimes makes you shook after it.

I love this game, though I thing that come to mind that this game will feel a bit draggy toward the final hours. Though I get the intent of the developers on why they doing that, I feel that it can be more compact. Anyway, it's 9/10, the game of this generation and a beautiful swan song for PS4.

This game has a perfectly told story that should make you think. The parallels that are drawn between Abby and Ellie, and their core group of friends have been carefully written. These girls draw from the same moral compass, but they've been on opposite sides of a situation that puts them in a mortal struggle against one another.

Sure, Abby kills Joel, who is a fan favorite. You are forced to understand this game is not called "Ellie and Joel's adventures part 2"...its "the last of us" (the last of humanity)

I agree with many on the web that there are many "agenda topics that are shoved in our faces," again, this world is supposed to parallel real life, with the trauma of child abuse, lack of decent males to choose from, it's safe to say that it isn't a stretch of the imagination Ellie would definitely be a lesbian.

This story tangles with topics of broken trust, forgiveness, revenge, cult-like beliefs and behavior, acceptance of other people's actions and their right to fight for their own beliefs, the realization that those in your community may not give two **** about you, and the need to think for yourself.

I'm rambling. No ellie does not get her revenge, she accepts that Abby was doing what she had to do after her father was killed, we find out near the end that ellie wished she had been used to find a cure, she could have "had meaning" she had to forgive Joel for taking that away, just as she must forgive Abby for taking Joel away.
This game draws parallels to modern society, where everyone "draws lines in the sand" over everything and the hate and rage that is freely shown to anyone that doesn't align with you, this game should hopefully make us all think about how we treat others. On the flip side of that coin, this game is JOYOUSLY BRUTAL. No matter which character you play as, you become a murderous PSYCO who's bloodlust can never be satisfied, I went from area to area gleefully and brutally killing every one and every thing. I found myself using leg shots and arm shots to maim my human rivals, rather than insta kill head shots. I smiled as they screamed in aggony and their comrades freaked out just before I cut them down in brutal animation after brutal animation. I loved the adrenaline dumps as I got the crap scared out of me by the infected time and time again, and the dread of knowing that they COULD BE ANYWHERE. I LAUGHED AND SMILED every time I died, because it was all gleefully gory. The art work here is beautiful, the world feels real, the progression of the infected areas are horrific. this game is an absolute must play. Dont listen to everything you read on the internet.

It's not just a video game, it's a work of art with a moral lesson that the game's characters are neither completely guilty nor completely innocent. It was a great game.

Incredible. The combat is the best of any game I’ve ever played and of course Naughty Dog comes through once again with an amazing story. Feels like you’re playing a movie

Or just flat-out refusing to give it a chance. The metacritic review bombing is childish, and so boringly predictable with it. It says more about outrage culture than anything else, and the lack of nuance allowed in mainstream entertainment.

We're not 'owed' anything, in terms of story. So what Naughty Dog have done here, on the back of a very simple story in Part 1, is tell a story they wanted to tell. Not only that, but they have done it more intelligently. Both parts share the fact that they are essentially character-driven narratives, which is always the best basis for a successful story. When I saw in the leaks that you ended up playing as Joel's murderer, my first instinct was how bold a choice that was. While others were upset, I was more intrigued by the fact that they had made this choice in the first place, and that it wouldn't be a rote action sequel. ND were going to try something different, and I applauded that, while also being intrigued about whether they could pull it off, because if not, then yes, it really would fall flat.

So, you play as Joel's murderer and the challenge ND set themselves was to turn around the player's viewpoint so far that you might begin to empathise or even like this new Abby character. BOLD. Know what may have been bolder? Player choice at the end, and an in-built prompt that told ND the result. Did the player choose to kill Abby, or let her go? The results would've been interesting, and may even have validated their story choice to an extent.

But this isn't the player's journey. So having that option taken out of your hands, much like at the end of part 1, just emphasises that point. These aren't your characters. They're not mine. We're watching what they do. Good entertainment often makes us squirm, or uncomfortable - not enough games do that, so to have one that does, and may even make you want to turn off, is a brave developer choice. People can be mad about it; see the leaks and boycott it, but this boldness is something missing from what has become more and more an adult medium. More adults play games than children, so to have a mainstream game that challenges in terms of story, and not just violence, gore, gameplay and puzzles, is welcome.

Do they pull it off? In the final standoff, would I have let Abby go or kill her? I would've let her go. Without experiencing Abby's arc, would I have let her go? Well, that's an interesting thought too. By the end, Ellie is shattered; both of you have slaughtered hundreds to get there, and gone through emotional turmoil - Ellie's character design at the end is shocking, as she's verging on anorexic. You can see the impact of all that hate and anger. So yeah, maybe seeing that Abby is looking after Lev (which adds to the guilt), and Ellie's own struggle at the time, might've been enough to let Abby go, even without experiencing her arc.

As an aside, while mentioning character design, I think it has to be hats off to the dev team for Abby's design. The braid and muscle, two simple things, combine to make an immediately exceptional design. You only need to find the spoiler memes across the net to see how it captures something unique. Hats off too to not overplaying the muscles - a lot of Abby's character is inferred, and there's something human about a little girl burning her anger with muscle-building so that when the time comes for revenge, she is more than ready for it. The fact she is NOT trans, or gay, but just a muscled woman, also serves to expose the ludricrousness of the review bombs that talk about pushing some form of agenda.

The only agenda, when it comes to the main characters, is diversity. Outside of the bubble of Joel's murder, Abby would've been (and was anyway) a kick-ass character to play. Women can be muscley too. And gays exist. It doesn't need saying, but for some people, it does. Creating a game with a diversity of main characters, especially one so in the public eye, is overwhelming inclusive. It helps normalise diversity. The more this is done, the better.

Though the harder the push-back (see: the review-bombs).

Is the story perfect? No. It falls foul of its own realism. In many games you wouldn't think too hard about characters coming and going, but here, after you've struggled through infected and armies, and just struggled to even find a path at times, it felt incongruous to have characters suddenly find you. That anyone wants to live in, let alone fight over, Seattle, is also unrealistic. However, everything mentioned, combined with beautiful environments and exciting, accessible, varied, FUN gameplay, make this game 10/10.

An incredibly nuanced, detailed narrative that dares to go in a direction few ever have when it comes to gaming. The characters are fleshed out and interesting, the world is stunning, rife with detail and rewards exploration and the gameplay is solid and refined. The combat can become a little repetitive towards the end but the varied locations and enemy types do keep it interesting. A visually great game with a story which many people dislike but I personally found to be gripping and made me feel many different emotions throughout but leaving me pretty much satisfied when all was said and done, getting to see the story prior to Joel’s death from Abby’s POV was much needed and allowed an understanding of Abby’s motives and her overall character. The gameplay is just perfect, the new mechanics make the gameplay one of the greatest of this generation, you will never get bored playing this game. The graphics are AMAZING, the enviroment, the music and the stages makes you feel like you are inside the game.
The story is in my opinion the worst thing of the game, like a fanboy that I am of Joel and Ellie, this end get me empty inside me and a little disappointed. In spite of the bad end, I like the way how Abby killed Joel. But the thing what bothered me the most is the fact that the game forces you to play with Abby for more of 10 hours, at that point of the game I feel like I was playing a Dlc or something like that.
I understand that Naughty Dog want you to emphatize with Abby, but I think that they didn't it well.
I think that the problem is in wanting to get into a new character to emphatize after killed Joel. To sum up, I recommend to everyone to play this masterpiece in spite of the end.
Pd: here is my unpopular opinion but...Ellie in the first half of the game >>Joel.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
