This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story is pure garbage; the established characters make choices and attitudes that are completely against everything they were about on the first game.
Certain new characters have so much plot armor that you have to question wether or not the writers were focusing on “gritty realism” as they claim they were.
The ending is one of the least cathartic, most pretentious and nihilistic piece of gaming media I’ve seen in a while, especially considering how little sense it makes due to the actions of the main characters at that point, whoever wrote it should be fired... Oh,wait.

Gameplay wise, it’s basically a glorified copy paste of the last game with some added upgrade options and way more linearity.

Overall the game would be fun but the story does ruin the whole experience, which is to be expected in a story driven third person shooter.

    Amazing soundtrack.
Same gameplay more or less like first game but still awesome nonetheless. BUT the story is so inconsistent, it's unbelievable : Joel and Tommy would NEVER walk into a room with a bunch of unknown people like that, Joel walking right in the middle like ?!?!?!? Defeats the purpose of the character narrative from the first game. Even if he softened up and all, he'd be soft to all familiar people (Jackson; people he knows) and even if it's a blizzard or w/e he'd still be cautious. And when Ellie goes through the door to save him, Manny doesn't let Jordan kick her more then at the end he tries to shoot her, like what ?!?!?! And Mel who's "traumatized" from torturing Joel is like "we shouldn't leave any loose ends" lol. HOW CAN A PREGNANT WOMAN CLIMB ROPES , BALANCE HERSELF ON SMALL POLES, JUMP FROM STUPID HEIGHTS, FIGHTS AND EXPLOSIONS AND CAR CRASHES,.. ?!?! And the Seraphites, Lev and Yara talkin casually as if they're not part of that cult and growing up scarred and all, whaaaat?! And whenever an enemy dies "marco, omar, jhonny, nooo" shoulda given me the option to write letters to their families too, and bury them and all too, who cares, one twice, not evvveerry encounter, I'll never be attached to them nor care ^oh look we gave different names to every npc^ and most definitely wouldn't care about Abby even if you make me play her 20 more hours, it feels so forced and so inconsistent and pathetic. So many more stuff is unfathomable. Anyways, tbh most fun I had is "killing myself as Abby OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN" especially vs Ellie, god those death animations felt so good. Very poor pacing. Game tries to disorient me and force me to try to even care about badly written characters. Story feels so lacking and disespectful to its amazing first game.Trash writing. Pathetic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine this situation. Suppose you are a fan of the Witcher game (I deliberately chose a game of approximately equal cult status), and the publisher showed you a trailer with the continuation of the story of Herald and Ciri. And then the game comes out, and you instantly buy it. And ... Full **** up. This is not a TLOU. Cool graphics, a normal plot with gray morality, good gameplay, but this is some other game. I am now using the TLOU2 plot in The Witcher World. This is a spoiler ... A dumb pumped woman kills Herald from Rivia at the very beginning of the game, and you are offered to play for Ciri to avenge Herald. When Tsiri reaches the peak moment of his story, you are switched to that dumb woman who killed Herald, and they show that she is exactly the same as Herald. Look, she has the same skills, she has her own Enifer, her own Ciri, we returned the Herald to you, only now he is not a charismatic man, but a boring and not beautiful woman. Rejoice ... Why? How should we like her? That she saved the deer? Oh god ... No. I will not accept it. In general, it lasts another 10-15 hours, and when you reach the peak moment of meeting with Tsiri, you are forced to kill Tsiri with your own hands. Well ****, really? Personally, I just tried to die, but the game made me kill Ciri. This is hell, honestly. Well, the final part is just some kind of cheap Brazilian series.
In general ... If this story was a separate game, I am sure that the feedback from the players would be good enough. And so. We were deceived ...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I should start by saying, I'm not much of a gamer. It's very rare that I even become invested enough in a game to talk about it & give an opinion. I wasn't even going to do so in this case, but it seems to be what everyone else is doing, & I'm seeing a lot of deceitful & unfair criticisms from critics & trolls respectively. I just want to talk about the game & what I thought of it honestly & I'll try to be as fair as I can, but of course this is all my subjective opinion.

I wanted to love The Last of Us Pat II, because the first game, in my opinion, is a masterpiece and is arguably one of the greatest video games ever made. It also presents an incredible story with some truly great characters. Joel and Ellie are two of my favorite fictional characters, & following their trek across a post-apocalyptic United States was an incredible experience. Because I love these characters, I was excited that we'd again be following them in Part II, this time with more of a preference on Ellie. And though that is the case for a lot of the game, I feel we also spend far too much time which characters we simply don't care about it, mainly the character of Abby. I think the actress who portrays her did a great job, but did we need to spend hours of time following her, in my view, no, especially given that after the first 2 hours of game-play, I (if I may be blunt) hated her character, given the fact that she kills Joel, way earlier than it should have happened. I hate the treatment Joel received in Part II; of course there's a bias on my part because I loved him in the first game, but I do feel like his character got dealt an unfair hand in Part II. I always figured that Joel would die, simply because it seemed like the obvious story decision that would push Ellie to become more independent (which in a way it does), but I wish we had spent more time with Joel and Ellie before his death. The counter-argument to that is "spending time with Joel & Ellie was the premise of the first game," & that's true, but Part II takes place years after that, their relationship has obviously progressed & changed over the years, & I would have liked to see where their father-daughter bond stood after all these years. If I'm being frank, I think Joel's death as it stands only serves as a way to subvert expectations, just for the sake of subversion, which is a poor way of storytelling.

Before I continue, some small things I liked: I think the voice acting is great from everyone, the graphics are incredible, the game-play is a lot more of an improvement over the last game (which is to be expected given it's been years since that game's release), and for the most part I liked some of the new side characters, like Dinah and Jesse. I also liked Ellie and Dinah's relationship, & I think it did a good job showing Ellie's maturity.

I mentioned earlier, but I think it was a mistake to focus so much on Abby, because I feel I'm not alone when I say I didn't care about her character and even hated her character (well, hate is strong word, but that's how I felt, especially after she killed Joel). She's a new character that we don't know, that we haven't spent any time with and have no history with, therefore of course I'm not going to care for her as much as i care for Ellie or Joel. I understand the game developers wanting to go in a different direction with Part II & want to show other people's perspectives, but the first game made it clear that it was solely focused on Joel and Ellie's perspective, & given Part II was marketed as mainly following Ellie, that's what myself & many others were expecting.

I see a lot of faux reviews, calling out "SJW stuff," or Neil Druckmann's politics, & I really don't want to to give any of that the time of the day because I don't care about them. I don't care that Ellie is gay, in fact I think it's great. I don't care about the other perceived SJW or political stuff, even if I may disagree with it, I won't let it get in the way of me playing the game. And honestly, if you're so appalled by gay characters or even Neil Druckmann, why are playing this game? Sure, obviously you can, you have every right to play this game, but when you know this game's going to piss you off, & then you rant in a review of how pissed off you are, I don't know, I question your point in even being here.

I do completely understand the double standard criticisms Part II is facing, especially in regards to SONY allowing a pretty graphic sex scene while in the past (& still to this day) censoring far less. I also dislike the notion that any negative criticism this game receives is the doing of bots. There are definitely trolls doing what trolls do, but there are folks with legitimate criticisms, & to ignore those criticisms does a great disservice to people who paid a lot of money for this game & were really excited about it.

That's all I really have to say. I wanted to love this game, but I couldn't.

This game is very linnear, and tries to replace good story telling with shock value by killing the main character off after a series of uncharacteristic choices. Further, it continues to punish the remaining main character, and forces you to play as the character who caused all of the previous mentioned bad events. The ending is unsatisfying, and the antagonist gets to get away with it all without having earned any of it. This game exists just to spit on the grave of the previous as a "screw you" to the original writer. One of the main writers stand-ins in the game even spits on Joel's corpse. Go figure. Do not pick this up, the only way to stop this blatant insult to the gaming community is to stop supporting train wrecks suck as this. The graphics were impressive, but there were several glitches that ruined it at times. The worst part for me was the story, compared to the first it was sad to see so many elements that made the first one great thrown away. All stories and shows seem to want to kill off loved main characters anymore cause they think they are making something shocking and surprising, only to do it in the laziest way possible and hope that making it graphic and violent will be impressive enough somehow, so it wasn't original, it wasn't innovative, it was a bad move, I only every hated the antagonist after that, and lost even more interest when forced to play as them. The ending is just tragic and makes everything up to that point meaningless. Might as well have just stayed back in the town and forgot the whole thing. She would be able to still play guitar at least. Expand

In creating The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog attempts to completely shy away from the beauty and themes of made players love its predecessor. Though the the developers try to create a new complex experience for fans, they end up creating a jumbled experience that forces players into an emotional roller coaster.

For this review, I am not going to talk about the game play and graphics. I feel like Naughty Dog needs to understand that fans of the game don't play the Last of Us for the game play, rather they play for the investing story. With all the specs of the game aside, the story that the games writers created surrounding vengeance falls flat.

First off, writers of the game choose to use Joel Miller, the main character of the first game, only as symbol of sorrow and the past. Naughty Dog has completely thrown away this character, and with it the relationship between Joel and Ellie that players were hoping to see. Joel's death only serves to add emotion, to push to the plot forward, and to emphasize the message that Naughty Dog is trying to convey. I am not saying that Joel shouldn't die whatsoever, I am saying that Naughty Dog should've used the character ins a more meaningful way in the game, allowing the player to still experience the game alongside him. To make things worse, prior to release the game was advertised as if Joel would be a main part of the story line. This choice buy the Naughty Dog is absolutely evil as they are basically promising buyers that the game will be one thing when it is something completely different. Through this, Naughty Dog is forcing players to play through their story.

    SPOILERS!!!!

Lets start with a fact, the graphics, voice acting and setting are stunning, but beyond this obvious achievement, AS A SEQUEL this game is a undeniable disaster in terms of story telling. Standing alone it achieves much, BUT IT IS NOT A STAND ALONE TITLE.
The story is a filled with cheap tropes and with part 1 in mind is such a let down that it feels like a chore to play beyond its 2nd hour. The idea of character continuity is non-existent and there is no payoff to the story beyond the fact that it is told. The perspectives feel forced and there are so many cringe decisions the player is forced to make for the sake of attempting (and FAILING) to illicit a certain response that it honestly feel like sandpaper on your mind. Very few games make you hate want to kill your own character but this game takes this to a new level.

For those reviews you see praising this "Stunning and brave" telling of a "true" and revealing story about human suffering are shallow at best, and must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Just because a story is controversial doesn't make it a good story. But sure, play it for yourself if you want to grasp the depths of how deeply you can despise the character you are forced to play. You can expect to have forced empathy shoved down your throat with little to no effort placed on connecting the player to the character's struggles on an actual emotional level.
It's almost as if the game expects you to sympathize out of virtue, which is **** let's be honest.
With this lack of actual character development in mind, you can look forward to a story that leaves nothing gained for the player in terms of closure, beyond a ONCE AGAIN... FORCED... and so pathetically terribly at that, garbage excuse for some kinds of emotional forgiveness that is hollow and barren AT BEST.

The game is just another absolutely terrible story that tries to vilify the characters you loved and make you question your emotional connection to them by highlighting their bad choices in the past and painting them from the perspective of others who suffered. While in theory this might be an edgy commentary on the human condition its NOT A GOOD BASIS FOR A SEQUEL TO A STORY which was based on making you connect with the characters you are now told to hate. It LITERALLY spits on your emotions... scummy move.

So what does this all mean?

You get a story that throws your emotional bond from game one into the trash, then spits on it.
Then very forcefully shoves an attempted new emotional bond down your throat trying to get you to feel something for and understand the actions of the character that just became your MOST HATED character in the story. Then at the end, this she-devil of a character you still even after 10 hours of gameplay AS, hate with the very essence of your soul, gets away scott free and leaves the "world" worse off than before in the players mind. No payoff, nothing, thats it.... Replayability.... NONE, you hate the whole plot and are just glad this **** of **** storytelling is over.

The "dedicated jump button" that was bragged about in this game is barely considered a jump and is more of a skip that is rarely used unless you're trying to get from one ledge to another (which only happens a handful amount of times). The existing characters from the first game (mainly Joel) feel like they got Men in Black flashed and forgot their personalities. The "Do whatever you can to get revenge" plot is exhausting and unoriginal. The new characters feel extremely forgettable and the game tries too hard to make you care about them rather than let you naturally get to know them. There's a few points in the game that seem like such cliche "bombshell" moments to try to force you to connect to a character who has barely had any "screen time". Where the story, characters, and core gameplay mechanics fail, the graphics are probably the best I've ever seen in any video game and are oftentimes breathtaking. The water effects and the landscape are amazing and immersive. If only this story based game had more going for it besides that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good parts:
The game is pretty and game play is great. It improves upon the original and I loved it through and through.
The flash back scenes feels like the real last of us. They have emotional weight and have some good character development for Ellie.
These are the only good things I found in the game.

    Bad parts:
Do the infected even matter in this universe now? There was no significant story arc involving infected. You can simply remove them from the equation, replace them with human and story barely changes a bit.

There is another big problem in story that affects game play in a very bad way.
You can't sympathize with Abby at all when you have a control of her. I started to not search for supplies with her and die on purpose just to see her die.
The game gives Abby all the cool weapons and the boss fights to make you like her but the first act of killing Joel probably the most loved character and some dialog in game itself depicts her as a horrible human being. Why would anyone want to play as her for 10 hours?

I loved the last of us and thought it did not need a sequel. It was probably the best story telling in video game that I have ever played. But they had to ruin my memory with this game.
The only way to explain story with an analogy is a dog taking a giant crap, steps on it and walks everywhere. It is stinky, messy and all over the place.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok. I think i should start with the cool things: First of all, the gameplay is just like the original game, so that's a good thing. The music really fits, and the visuals are really beautiful. I can hear, i can see, and i can play in a wonderful way.

So, why do i give it a 3?
    The story, THE **** STORY

WHY DID THEY DO MY DEAR JOEL DIRTY LIKE THAT? WHY?
Because muh revenge. Just because of that.

I'm going to be absolutely honest. I wouldn't have minded if Joel had died. BUT DEMONIZING HIM AND BEATING HIM TO A PULP? REALLY? There are better ways to manage things like that.
Now, Abbie. ABBIE. I really had a bad time playing as her, i couldn't forgive her for Joel, and the only thing i liked about her side of the story was the Scar brothers (though they killed one of them, so..... Yeah, that was really **** overall)

Another thing i found really sad and disappointing was the ending. YOU DO A WHOLE **** ADVENTURE TO SEATTLE, YOU TRY TO AVENGE JOEL (your "dad"/parental figure), WHICH GOT BEATEN UP AND KILLED IN FRONT OF YOU, YOUR (PREGNANT) GIRLFRIEND ALMOST GETS KILLED, YOUR FRIEND/BIOLOGIC DAD OF YOUR KID GETS SHOT IN THE FACE AND DIES RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, So you spend a long time trying to rebuild your life, with constant traumas from the past, and your "uncle" (which was also deformed by the same bad guy) finally gives you a hint of where THE VILLAIN may be.
So you decide to risk it all to finally get that sweet revenge. YOU FIND HER, YOU FIGHT HER, YOU WIN! But nooooooooo, i can't kill her, She aint that bad of a person, she cares about his friend (which you don't know at all so why would you care?) SO WHAT WILL I DO? I'LL SET HER FREE! I'LL **** LET HER GO WITHOUT ANY KIND OF REASON!.
What i'm trying to say is, the story really should've at least allowed you to have a choice in the matter, because for me, i would've definitely killed Abbie, without a doubt (but that doesn't mean that everyone will have the same idea as me, so it would've been great to have a choice).

Now, to wrap things up, i will say this: If you like it, good for you, thou art a free individual. BUT, that doesn't mean that i will enjoy the same things as you. For me this game was really good, a solid sequel to the masterpiece that was the first TLOU, but for every right it gave me, like the gameplay or the soundtrack, it kicked me in the balls with the story. I enjoyed the first half of the game with Ellie, though i feel that some traits of her where changed (but since she grew up it's all right); i DESPISED the second half with Abbie, and the end was pretty disappointing overall. So yeah, that's why i think it deserves a 3

It was one of the first good story driven games. Even tho the story was simple, there were moments that made it more than what it was. Part 2 destroys everything the first game tried to build. The characters aren’t even half as interesting as the ones in the first game. The story is all over the place, the pacing is off, overall from a storytelling perspective it seemed really lazy. As shallow as the god of war games were, they made a better revenge story than the last of us part 2, and as bad as Spiderman 3 was as a movie it had a better revenge/forgive story. The way they tried to deliver the story in this one was just push the player and use shock value moments. They try to make Joel the bad guy and humanize Abby and make it seem as if it was her revenge story, when her half of the game just pushed the idea of her being a complete monster aside from petting dogs and saving Lev. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, playing The Last of Us Part 2 was a disappointment. The first game was undoubtedly a masterpiece. The fantastical world it took place in, the well developed characters and the satisfying gameplay. It all came together to create such an amazing experience. The first Last of Us had tremendous replay value, and for some, may have been the first game where the story was so captivating that the player felt a connection to the characters and a deep desire for them to succeed in their quest. Joel’s eventual brutal acts at the end of the game were ethically dubious, but from the player’s perspective, were completely justified as the importance/significance of Joel and Ellie’s bond was strong in the players mind, having played the game and seen it develop themselves. The Last of Us 2 unfortunately does not capitalise on all the good that the first game earned. In short, the writing for this game is crap. It’s dull and unlike the first game, I found myself not caring about the characters. Joel should have gone out like a champ, like the brave, tough, no nonsense guy we knew he was. We should have seen him backed into a corner, fighting to his last breath, his sacrifice resulting in others being able to escape with their lives. A hero/saviour of Jackson. But instead he went out like a punk. Joel and Tommy causally entering a room with a bunch of strangers. You’d think that years of living in this harsh new world would make Joel hypersensitive to danger and unfamiliar people. But it appears that the writers were not keen on that narrative. Instead the writers of this game, rewrote Joel to make him weak and moronic. Resulting in Joel having his head caved in with a 9 iron. The writers made Joel deserve the death he got. He was stupid and naive. Nothing like the Joel the players knew. The creators of this game destroyed Joel’s character. Was it worth it? Did we get a great story as a consequence of these events? No, we didn’t. Remember in the first game when Joel gives Ellie his rifle so that she can cover him. It highlighted a significant step forward in both characters development. Joel began to trust and respect Ellie’s capabilities and Joel and Ellie’s relationship/bond really became solid. Ellie transformed into a formidable character. This was evident when she has to fend for herself when Joel got hurt. Ellie from the second game is nothing like was was in the first. She is portrayed as weak, naive and unprepared. She always seems so surprised when the enemy knock her down or jump out from a corner. Hasn’t she been through all this before? In the Last of Us 2, Ellie is pathetic. Ellie achieved NOTHING. She got no revenge, no redemption. More people that she cared about got hurt or died during her quest to find Abby. Abby is portrayed as a brute, barbaric. Being forced to play as Abby was unpleasant. Even after playing through as Abby and seeing things from her perspective, I still deeply dislike her as a character. With all the stuff she goes through with her friends and lev, was I supposed to feel sorry for her, or at least start to understand her motives? Well I didn’t. Abby sucks. Tommy got **** over. He did most of the revenge work and still ended up almost dying. When we see him close to the end of the game, he is clearly physically and mentally broken. Tommy deserved so much better. At the end of it all: Abby survives! Hooray, woo, yeah.... wait what?! **** seriously. Ellie can’t bring herself to kill Abby. What the **** is that all about. Everything that the gang went through, Ellie, Dina, Jesse, Tommy. It was all for NOTHING. If the game ended just after Joel gets killed, it would have turned out better for everyone. No one from Jackson would necessarily have died and Abby probably would have died anyway. She would have been killed by the WLF for deserting, or killed during the WLF raid on the Scar island. The entire story didn’t matter. **** I’m so disappointed. Expand

objectively it cant be higher then a 5 or 6, but even at its worse it cant be worse then a 3 oh and to hell with metacritic for removing suspicious 0's but wont look at the

The graphics are fine, and the game play is ok (nothing was wildly different from the first one), but the story just really drags this game down and makes it completely not fun to play. Characters go against established traits (Joel giving his real name to strangers... LMAO) and it took a lot to just finish it. (also with no pay off at the end).

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting the game to be all sunshine and rainbows, but to turn this into a simple revenge plot with no revenge payoff in the end just really doesn't sit well with me. Ellie was so angry and revenge-driven, the fact she didn't kill Abby in the end is just f'ing ridiculous. She has no problem killing EVERYONE else without batting an eye, but she stops at the main person who killed the closest person to her... OK game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joel was treated like a random NPC the way he got killed and then spat on, was very disrespectful after all that had happened in the first game. Felt like the manner in which he got killed and spat on was purposely a slap in the face for us, as if to say "forget this garbage and let's focus on a political agenda now". Especially because it was done so early in the game too. Worst part is, it was advertised in trailers as if joel would have some good focus in this sequal, and it's obvious they did that incase people found out joel gets treated like **** and then not buy the game. Not against main characters dying either but it's the way in which they die that needs to be carefully crafted. Red dead series is a very good example. Joel's death was lazy writing to focus on an agenda. Don't think I need to say anymore. Not against any form of group or community but these days it feels like developers of games and movies alike are forcefully making these decisions when it simply doesn't fit into the narrative it just feels out of place. They're are so many ways to make everyone feel involved without sacrificing the story. Mass effect series, dragon age and even assassins creed odyssey are all prime examples. The options are there for the player to choose but it does not sacrifice story or feel forced. Expand

You have taken a loved game and failed at your attempt to WOKE force-feed the Gaming community we are all open-minded and easily caring ...was there anyone driving the Car ??? how could you let this happen ??? clearly graphics are not that important when you destroy a Legacy!

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
