Credo che il periodo nel quale sono stato immerso nell'atmosfera malata di questo gioco e nella mente dell'ideatore, coincida con il periodio nel quale ho partorito le più variegate bestemmie. Un gran bel titolo, peccato per la situazione checkpoint

It's not a perfect game. It's not the game with the best graphics or with the best scenario. But it's the game you won't forget for long time.
First part of game I was thing what is going and even after beating it I'm not sure what it was but it was definitely cool.

As a drawback I could point low FPS on PS4 Pro but it's even made gameplay more atmospheric. Who knows how it works in STEM ? :)

This was the return of the survival horror genre to the gaming world, long before Capcom started to pay attention to their Resident Evil franchise.

It's more action oriented like Resident Evil 4 , it's not like the old survival tittles. This game adds some new mechanics to the genre such as: -Stealth. -Crafting ammo and resources. -Collecting keys to open cabinets for random loot.

Every adition works fine, which makes it even better as it helped the genre come to life again for the time.

Nowadays the game has fixed all its issues, including the horrible cinema bars and has plenty of dlcs to enjoy.

If you were planning on playing this game , you should start with this one first instead of going for the second title. (That's a different story)

For me this was the best one the series has to offer and it's pretty damn good as a survival horror.

At its core, the game is very intense and terrifying and you feel emerged with the character. It never seems to drag and rarely are you frustrated with the difficulty while it still presents a challenge. While it's narrative driven, you feel like you have choices and there is a lot you cam miss with collectibles and a fun upgrade system and crafting parts. It is a mix of Last of Us, Silent Hill and Resident Evil with a nice spin of its owm. This is my opinion of course. Expand

I died 199 times and played it on survival mode. The chapters i had the most difficulty with was chapter 7, 10 and 15. I died the most in those chapters. In a couple chapters towards the end of the game you are able to use a mounted turret which is totaling satisfying as throughout the whole game you are scrambling to find any ammo, but when you are on that turret you don't have to worry about running out of ammo as you just aim and let her rip. Anyways here are my likes and dislikes of the game:

    Likes:
-The game as a whole is a mind altering adventure, literally.

    Dislikes:
    - Camera angles get wonky a little bit during combat.
    - The save system is a total let down as i would be 15 or more minutes into a chapter and making good progress and next thing you know i die and then i have to restart all over again which is a huge letdown and VERY FRUSTRATING!!
    - The sprinting in this game just sucks. Who gets tired of running after 8 sec. An enemy would literally be chasing me and next you know my guy stopped to take a breather. I am like ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW!!!
    - After dying you have to re-search for the green gel, ammo, etc that you accumulated before dying which got annoying.
    - Lack of ammo was my biggest thing which is why i kept dying because most of my deaths occurred in boss fights and during those fights is when i needed more ammo, but didn't have it so i had to get creative. I guess i can blame it on the difficulty i had it on.

Considering how extremely frustrated i got during this game i still thought it was a great game, but dam was it FRUSTRATING. When i play Evil Within 2 i am putting the difficulty on easy. It was just too much to deal with at times on survival mode.

    Saludos.

The Evil Within is a one-of-a-kind game. It blends many elements from past and current survival horror titles into an unforgettable experience. The interesting atmosphere and story, the varied areas and bosses. The combat is a bit clunky though and the traps sprinkled in every area may take a bit to get used to. If you can look past the few gameplay flaws, you'll have a blast.

One of the many things I loved about TEW is the atmosphere. What happens quite often with horror games is that there are too many cheap jump scares and TEW doesn't rely on them at all, sure there are some there but it ultimately relies more on the sounds, the chilling story and the locations. The only negative that I can bring up is that the main character is pretty cliche and boring.

The story looks good in the beginning but this is only teasing, after a few capter's you realize its just cheap. Animations and graphics are pretty bad as well. Expand

Pretty good, almost a guilty pleasure with just how much AAA **** there is in this game. The usual one-hit-kill stealth, action more than horror, and crafting but still ends up its own unique beast. Areas/sections of the game go all over the place from every horror cliches like hospitals, villages, ruin cities, etc. If you want a good story and likable characters, you're gonna hate this.

He is the Creator of the cult series Resident Evil, he also in his time made the revolution game Resident Evil 4, when it reinvented the genre of survival horror. Within the walls of Bethesda, he founded his own Studio - Tango Gameworks and started to develop The Evil Withi (original title - Psychobreak). Naturally the expectations were large, all waiting for a new revolution in the genre. Received we not revolution, but evolution.

The Evil Within is a survival horror with a complex plot. And this is the case when you dig into it and think is really interesting. Our controlled character Sebastian Castellanos. Together with him we were in a psychedelic hell. To dilute our lonely adventure will be his partner Julie Kidman and Joseph ODA as well as rare doctor Jimenez and Leslie. The plot of the game, though good, is twisted, but the problem is that it just a little. Approximately from 2 to 9 Chapter, the plot does not develop and we have all this time, in fact, just a gameplay adventure. Ongoing survival, which is poorly supported by the plot. But Chapter 9 begins the normal flow of the plot and max included psychedelia. We also find notes on the family of Sebastian, which in the end just be an interesting story, which is not developed (although we already know that the second part will be in fact his personal story, and there may we all know).

In terms of gameplay it really is survival. cartridges and lacelock always in the shotgun, all you need to save, and shoot accurately. The game does not forgive mistakes. Even normal enemies can kill the main character with a few strokes, bosses and did the same fierce, some even vanscott you. The game has stealth, but we will not use very often. This is not a stealth game and more of a third-person shooter. sometimes the game stops being horror and becomes just a shooter, which is not always pleasant. I wish the game was designed in the same tempo-rhythm. At the locations there are traps that we can defuse, and can lure them into enemies, which is very useful. If we can disarm traps, will give us details which we will spend on bolts for the crossbow (bolts of different types). As for locations, you can find the "gel", which is the pumping of the protagonist. In upgrading all standard.

The locations are varied and beautiful. Will visit in the devastated city, and in the catacombs, and in the village. The game looks cinematic (not even taking into account strip that can be switched off), and also quite beautiful. From graphics to spit not want to. That's just the game itself is technically not done very well. At the start, it was lag, but now everything is fixed. You can also notice frequent pogrugenie textures (thanks to id Tech 5 engine).

The enemies in the game look cool, repulsive and a bit scary. If ordinary opponents can be overcome without too much skill, the bosses require special tactics.

The game went 3 DLC: 2 story and 1 meat just for entertainment. In story DLC "The Assignment" and "The Consequence" we play for Julie Kidman. The gameplay for it is different, because now that we have stealth (shoot too give, but a little). These additions do the plot and reveal the history from a different perspective. It is evident that they, the developers tried to listen to player feedback. The third DLC "The Executioner" not the plot, and meaty, bloody entertainment. We play for the Keeper - Catgroove. We destroy the enemies with extreme brutality.

The Evil Within - it's this squeeze of creativity Sensi Mikami. It is felt that this game did it. Even unused demo for RE4 found their application. References complete: from the first appearance of the possessed to destroy the main guy. And it's not bad. The game is really about survival, but unfortunately it's not horror. The game pumps, and there are scary moments, there are many gallons of blood and dismemberment juicy, the authors often play with reality, but do not take this game as a horror movie. This third-person shooter with elements of survival. The story was interesting, but it was too rough, and a lot of things to thinking the most, besides most of the game we have the bare gameplay mechanics, which, of course, still interesting, but it would be nice to spread the story throughout the game. A revolution in the genre didn't happen, but came out great development. This is the good old Resident Evil, but more psychedelic and bloody. Can't say that TEW is my most favorite game, also is not to say that it is the most terrible of its horror brethren. But I passed it 2 times (second time with DLS) and want to go third, followed by probably still. The game is addictive, makes her return in this terrifying world.

I really don't understand what they have made with the argument, one of the worst and weird plots ever made. The game, technically, deserves a 4, but i am giving it an extra point just for Mikami. Another failed attempt to bring back the survival horror, this game fails just like Deadly Premonition, most uninspired characters ever, the main character has no personality whatsoever, he did not react to the enviroment, buildings falling and other things, what the hell is going on? Too much fantasy in an "horror" game. So yes, like i said, this game is very far to even look like a survival horror game, it's too repetitive and boring. One of the worst things is the stealth system, man, one of the worst IA i saw, the enemies are incredibly stupid! i think the enemies in Resident Evil 4 are most clever than this one, ENEMIES NEVER SEE YOU, AND THE GAME BECOMES TOO EASY. there's no challenge at all, the difficulty in this game is way too easy. The RPG elements ruin the whole experience (SINCE WHEN THE "HORROR" GAMES HAVE RPG AND STEALTH ELEMENTS), **** no. There's nothing new about this game, there's nothing fresh, no innovations, they took the elements from previous resident evil games, the open door mechanics from RE 4, burn the bodies, from RE 1 remake, the general mechanics, from the awful deadly premonition, and the general rpg elements and traps disarming from Last of us.

    Positive(+):
    - The attempt (failed) to bring survival horror back, what a shame this game is not a good one.
    - Some interesting moments
    - Horror atmosphere and eerie feeling (but still action focused)
    - Rewarded exploration
    - Good variety of weapons and objects

    Negative(-):
    - This game is focused in action, not in exploration or puzzle solving.
    - The characters are very uninspired, their lack of personality is the worst thing i noticed.
    - The graphics are very outdated, it looks like a ps2 or an early ps3 game.
    - The music is not good or memorable.
    - The game is too easy, not challenge at all.
    - No new ideas, nothing fresh, this game took elements of previous games, like trap disarming from last of us, burn bodies from resident evil remake, some details like kick doors, or the knife use from Resident evil 4, there's nothing new in this title, every aspect is recycled from other games.
    - The melee combat system is mediocre, no strategy when facing enemies unarmed.
    - The stealth system just idoes not work, the executions are all the same and the enemy AI seems very dumb.
    - The lack of personality in the characters! They have no special personality, take resident evil 2 for example (a good game), Leon is an amateur cop, a very ambicious man, a very protective one, he is confident and well prepared. In evil within, all characters have the same boring personality.

    Greetings to real gamers.

This game has proved to be annoying enough for me to put in my 2 cents and review it. First off, the controls feel lumbering and clunky which makes for bad aiming and combat. Combined with a really bad camera that always feels too close and always seems to keep you at a disadvantage, enemies that kill you with one hit, save points that are too far from areas with one hit enemies and far too many instances of trial and error gameplay and you have a game that's more annoying than fun. Story wise it's incredibly meh. I don't care about any of the characters.
By chapter 10 I just wanted to be done with it. When I got to another part with a one hit enemy and had to figure out how to kill it again while dying over and over, I realized I don't care. I have no idea how this has so many 10s here but hey, there's people out there that get off on people pooing on them so apparently some people like poo. All I can say is, "I don't."

The Evil Within is a 3rd person survival horror game where you play as detective Sebastian investigating a scene of a mass murder at a mental hospital and then all of a sudden things start going crazy…
I don’t want to spoil the story but the games setting is actually a pretty cool twist..
But for the most part at least in the beginning the game mixes settings and scenery up…
In fact the first half of this game is great and guaranteed this game a spot on my game of the year least when the time came.. but it didn’t stay this great…
As a survival horror game youre managing your health with pick ups.. your health will regenerate but only slightly.. and when your health is bwelow a certain point you move slowly and aren’t able to run…
But a bit like the game alone in the dark you have weapons here… as you progress the game youll get a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, a cross bow like weapon, there are grenades.. a great variety of weapons for survival and devent drop rate of ammo.. but just enough to keep you staying carful with what you use..
Unique from most survival horror games is that there is an assassins creed like stealth mechanic where you can take out most unaware enemies from behind..
you also have to stealth to disarm traps and get parts the craft cross bolts for your bow…
there are also jars of brain juice around the levels and off of enemies that act as a currency you use to upgrade your stats, buy ammo, and increase the stats of your weapons..
There are mirrors that take you back to the hospital this allows you to save the game as well, but the game will ocassionally autosave
The first half of the game I found to be really enjoyable and terrifying..
I was stressed in a good way and enemies put up a great challenge…
Missions were varied, I felt like I was in a movie..
And then halfway through the game it starts to fall apart..
The game goes from being scary to just frustrating..
Its becomes an anxiety fest of dealing with insta kill enemies, and recourse draining section after recouce draining section.. dealing with spongy bosses, having to thow switch after switch doing it multiple times in the same area to pregress further…
The games initial near perfect progression crumbles and stumbles to a crawl…
Made worse by this games awful checkpoint and autosave system…
The game wont constantly autosave once you find an important item…
And again there are cheap instakill enemies and moments in this game…
They are sometimes completely random, they’ll hit you and you have to go through the 10 minutes of recollecting supplies over and over and over until you get lucky enough to either get away or not activate this random spawn…
And also again… the 2nd half of this game is focused more on anxiety than it is horror..
its not fun replaying these anxiety filled moments
They aren’t even fun the first time…
And the games 2nd half is filled of these moments and trial and error chases with no indication of what you have to do, so you just keep doing it until you get it right with no checkpoints..
But still I pushed forward.. I was overlooking all of the bad because of the intriguing story going through this anxiety fest…
The game would freeze on my a couple of times causeing me to resatart it… no big deal, ill forgive it.. the first half was so good and im so close to this games end..
8 and a half hours into the game.. im on chapter 11 out of 15.. about 2 and a half to 3 hours away from this games credits.. and I run into a game breaking bug…
    That’s right… 3 years later… a Bethesda game (go figure) still has a game breaking bug…
I did play the ps3 version of this game and thought that’s clearly the problem.. so I went to google and no.. this chapter is full of game breaking bugs, more than just the one I ran into that wouldn’t let me progress the game..
I was an hr deep and nothing I did helped, shutting down the game, reloading checkpoints..
dying.. nothing… the game wouldn’t let me progress…
The only thing keeping me from just giving this game a 0 and walking away is that restarting the chapter could’ve probably let me continue.. but once more..
the 2nd half of this game is filled of anxiety, frustration and cheapness…
I wasn’t about to go through that hour and a half I just went through again..
Im walking away from what I thought was initially a great game that crumbled into a good game, but left me with the taste of a bad game…
    I give the Evil Within
    a very generous

After reviewing the PC version of this game and giving it a zero people told me that I should give the game a second chance due to the fact the game is notorious for its poor PC port. I decided to pick up the PS4 version and give it a try. I found the experience on the console version much better compared to the awful train wreck that the PC port was and managed to finish it all the way through. I overall found The Evil Within a mediocre experienced that suffers from many technical shortcomings and lack of focus.

The Evil Within suffers in its presentation and delivery. The game is locked at 30 frames which makes the game feel slow and sluggish. The Evil Within looks graphically last generation and even looks like a PS2 game at times. The horror games that came out the same year(2014) as The Evil Within had much more impressive graphics such as Alien: Isolation and P.T. The game also experiences frequent texture pop in, very low resolution textures and slow load times. The Evil Within also uses a very dated and old engine which may explain these technical problems. Closed in dark areas of the game look and load better compared to open areas this maybe also connected to the engine which was used for shooter games where much of the action is in corridors. The character models look ugly and dated and look last generation. The Evil Within is inspired by many horror movies which can be in the art style the game uses. The game visually appears to be inspired by gore themed horror like Saw and other slasher flicks. The gore effects are well done in the game but can be overdone and ridiculous. The Evil Within is also inspired by many horror games such as Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The game looks almost like if Silent Hill and Resident Evil had a baby. The game does use too many allusions from the Resident Evil series such as the village scene from Resident Evil 4 and the head turning zombie from Resident Evil 1 just to name a few. The sound design in the game is also not very impressive and sounds like it come out almost 10 years ago at times. The game does feature a solid music score except for the credit song which sounds like an awful JPop band. The Evil Within features many horrid awful looking monsters that you will have to fight and overcome throughout the game. The game features zombie like enemies called “the haunted” that stalk you throughout the game along with other grotesque enemies. The game features many visually interesting and freaky bosses that will keep you interested in playing more. I found some of the bosses uninspired though such as “the keeper” which is pretty much a pyramid head clone. The Evil Within offers interesting monsters but fails when it comes to polish and visuals.

The Evil Within has a disconnected and confusing story. You play Sebastian Castellanos a detective who has been sent to Beacon Mental Hospital with his Partner Joseph Oda and a new recruit Juli Kidman from there the story takes off. The game seems to be trying to tell a more physiological story but falls flat on its face. The back of the game says that you are trapped in a crazy scientist's mind which sounds unoriginal but I felt could be told well. The game’s focus on disconnected areas that have little in common made it hard to be immersed in the game’s story and ruined the pacing. The game’s character are also boring, cartoonish, and one dimensional. Sebastian is a genetic gritty detective who I found no interest in the entire playthrough. The voice acting is especially awful as well especially Sebastian's voice actor who uses a generic gritty monotone voice throughout the entire game. The game ends at a predictable note full of plot holes. Knowing that the game was made by Shinji Mikami the creator of Resident Evil I was not expecting a good story at all but I still feel the story must be criticized. Bethesda released a concept book that shows how the game was developed and shows that the game was originally going to go for a more grounded approach. The game was going to focus more on the creepy mental hospital than the disconnected areas the game presents..The Evil Within tells a weak forgettable story.

The Evil Within delivers a solid gameplay experience but suffers from the fact that it is dated. The Evil Within controls and plays much like Resident Evil 4 though a little smoother. The game feels more like a 3rd person shooter than a horror game at times which takes away from the experience. The game arms the player to the teeth with a pistol, shotgun, crossbow, sniper rifle, and a magnum to name a few. One feature I did like which was added to the game was a match burning system that allowed the player to use matches to burn downed enemies from coming back up. I liked this system and it reminded me of the zombie burning mechanic for the Resident Evil Remake. Head shots in The Evil Within are very satisfying and gorey and if not shot properly can lead to the enemy losing a chunk of its head. The game uses limited ammo and healing items and “brain gel” which can be used to upgrade the main character. I found the upgrade system unneeded and poorly implemented. Sebastian has ridiculously low sprint meter and inventory which was done to accommodate the upgrade system. The game has an imbalance of resources you gives more gel than bullets and healing items which are far more essential. The enemy A.I. is extremely dumb and so is the partner A.I. if not worse. The segments where you are with Joseph are not fun at all because you are forced to babysit him instead of taking care of yourself. The game also features boss fights throughout the experience. The boss fights are tedious, sometimes frustrating and boring. Essentially you just waste all your ammo and items in one big splurge until the boss is defeated. Bosses also have cheap one hit instakills that force the player to redo the fight from the beginning over and over again. I found this extremely frustrating whenever these would happen and would take away the fear and turn it into anger instead. The game seems to be taking cues from Dark Souls a game I particularly dislike for many reasons which can be checked out in one of my other reviews. The game over screens also have the same similar jingle to them that the ones in Dark Souls have. The game also hides in the environment annoying traps that greatly hinder progress. I found these traps unenjoyable and extremely frustrating. The traps are not scary at all and builds no tension. The game features interesting puzzles that have that are visually interesting and striking that give the player a break from the nonstop action. The end segment of the game is also atrocious and throws Sebastian into an arena where he is forced to fight off all the enemies from the game and is forced to fight a boss two times before being allowed to face the final boss. I found this cheap and unfair and the game difficulty suddenly escalates for no reason in this segment. The Evil Within has a solid combat and puzzles but suffers when it comes pacing and boss fights.

The last question you maybe asking me is did you find the game scary? Sorry no I found the game not the scariest in the slightest. Horror needs to be grounded in some sort of reality and The Evil Within does not do that by telling a confusing story, arming the player to the teeth, and making the areas disconnected and pulling the rug under the player too many times.

I found The Evil Within a messy game with many flaws that took away from my experience. I was not impressed by the presentation, graphics or gameplay. Resident Evil 7 is coming out next month and I am excited to play it. Capcom the creators of Resident Evil have given out a survey asking players which games they like and found this game among the ones asked and made sure not to include it. The Evil Within was dated the day it came out. It proves that game’s are not always defined by their creator. The new direction most horror games are taking now are superior than the titles of old. The third person horror game is officially dead and is now going to be replaced with first person atmospheric horror games instead. Horror games are not defined by their gameplay but should be instead defined by their presentation and story which are the most important in freaking and immersing the player. I believe The Evil Within is a flawed game no doubt but is more average than terrible.

Tensión constante, ambientación de 10, una duración más que aceptable, un guión interesante y un diseño de enemigos cojonudo! A shame, because the story, gameplay and characters are quite good.

Almost immediately The Evil Within reminded me of another Bethesda title... The Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth with few weapons and restricted ammo placing more emphasis is on running and hiding than really going toe to toe with bad guys which most likely will end with you getting killed... horribly and often. For me that made the horror of the game much more frightening and the sense of dread loomed over me the entire time I played the game.

A nice change of pace was the the stealth aspects of this game. While they don't seem to be as fine tuned as a true "stealth" game it adds a much more tense aspect to the game play and has you on the edge of your seat when you are attempting to sneak up behind something horrible and drive a knife into its skull.

Another interesting feature is the use of environment traps. Every area seems to have a wide variety of traps that are incredibly deadly to the main character. The first few chapters of the game I would creep around and disarm these to make things a little easier on myself. However by chapter 4 or 5 I got wise to the fact that you could use these traps to your own benefit by leading the mobs through them and thinning the herd a little with trip wires and proximity bombs. Using these traps to your advantage takes a little bit of work but at the end of the day it's rewarding and in some instances probably the only way you are going to kill whatever it is that is after you.

There are a few issues with some of the controls in the game. I've noticed a lot of strange clipping taking place with the camera which can be really annoying when you are trying to look around and your camera ends up inside a wall or other part of the environment making it impossible to really see. I would have liked to see the camera snap back to the over the shoulder view automatically rather than having the player control it all the time because there are many instances where you are forced to turn and quickly run away but end up with the camera facing the wrong direction making it nearly impossible to avoid objects and mobs that might be in front of you.

Overall if you are a fan of survival horror this one is worth picking up. I give this a solid 10 in the atmosphere department and a 7.5 or 8 in the game play category. It's not perfect but it's damn good.

After Alien Isolation it was hard to get into TW and not keep expectations high, but, I was surprised. The game is a masterpiece. Whilst the Stealth may not be up to par with AI, the encounter set pieces make it outshine the rest in this stale genre.

The Evil Within is a completely fantastical ride with a plot that centers on the antagonist rather than your protagonists, and it's a refreshing change from the MC centered messes most games are. The dream sequences are surreal and unnerving as you literally trudge through the mind of your aggressor with little control over the surrounds. I find it hilarious that this game's narrative was put down, when it's one of the most well written games on the market as it follows the convention of the plot and events being centered on someone other than the Central Character. I will not go into detail (it's metacritic for the love of all things holy), but yeah, those exist, where the character is at the mercy of the plot. What a shocker, right?

And this game does it so well as you are literally tossed around at the whim of another's mind; it’s a perfect connotative and denotative aspect of this type of writing, handled with literal perfection in TW. Trust me, people, you do not have to be so ruefully idiotic to not know that there are different types of narrative schemes. What a shame that average gamers (and reviewers) are quite pitifully pathetic in their grasp of this simple fact. What a shame indeed, and thus, love to project their obtuse mindset onto the game. I swear it, it's because of gamers as to why we have to suffer through such poorly written stories that amass the market. You people have no one to blame, but yourselves.

But, moving on ... the lack of control over your own psyche, what you feel and see is so brilliant that very few games delve that deep into the quagmire of confusion and psychological disparity between your aggressor and the mostly-quiet hero. It captures the feel of dream segments and the "bizarre landscape of the mind" concept with near finesse. There are very few games that capture the atmosphere this masterfully … very few.

The set pieces are brilliant as you can approach a situation in many different ways. You can either disarm the traps or use them against the enemies, take them head on or take a stealth approach and it all boils down to how quick you are on your toes; it’s all about keeping a level-headed approach.

The bosses are varied and challenging. The environmental puzzle fight with a certain someone (I will not spoil as to whom it is) and the unnerving slow methodical chase through the mansion sequence test your wits again; should I run or hide, what will be the best course of action? It is these kind of “intelligent” decisions that are missing from power fantasy, poor man’s games that throng the industry and are suffocating it and this challenging and genre-defying game (like AI) comes as a breath of fresh air.

Sure, there are a few faults. The letterbox was a bad choice and the crouch mechanic does not share the fluidity of Amanda’s movement; it’s clunky and the camera angle needs work here. Levels 11 and 12 bring the experience down quite a bit by being so over-the-top action sequences. They could have been merged together (and abridged) with the best parts such as the main antagonist’s doppelganger and the water monsters being the main threat, as the ambulance mission was in need of serious polishing and editing. But, thankfully, they are of short stay and hence do not mar the over all experience.

However, as the rest of the game stays mostly consistent, it would be a shame to bring the whole thing down just for these two as even these have their highlights … as few as they may be. The point I am trying to make is that people should look at the complete experience and not nitpick over small missteps. That is a terrible attitude an average gamer has and it’s ruining the VG industry as a whole; the desire for all games to be hand-holding, dull and easy games that a 5 year old can manage.

Few checkpoints and save stations are heaven sent, as you truly feel that you are just scraping by and barely surviving, only accentuated more by sparse resources that make you feel and think that, “make your every step and shot count.” One misstep and the game punishes you, as it should. The lax treatment in other games is the reason why we have such poor games saturating the industry, where the game even tells you where the boss’ weak points are. I suppose the next step would be when devs hand out long tutorials to find keys on a keyboard, as I feel as if I am playing a game aimed at a gibbon rather than a human being. This trend of “cake-walk gaming” needs to go. Period.

Forget whether you are a fan of the genre or not, give TW a try as it brings something very refreshing to the table (dream psychology) and makes it shine with breathtaking atmosphere that will make your skin crawl. Paradoxical? True, but that is what TW is; an unsettling beauty.

When crouching in evil within you are less noticeable but your twice as slow than the slowest enemies crawl. This means you can't get to any enemy from behind crouching. So now you have to play the frustrating game of trial and error of trying to figure out how close you can get to a enemy running before they detect you, then you crouch hoping they stop their movement so you can grab them. With this crap mechanic you can only grap stationary enemies but they don't stay still, oh and they all have random patterns. Basically stealth is out the window accept for those who master the "run then crouch before they turn" gimmic.

Also enemies are sponges and you barely have bullets, it's like resident evil 6 again! If naughty dog handled the engine and game-play this game would have been a perfect ten! The best thing about the game and why I say rent it is the bosses. Super cool but also sponges.

Well in fact some might be disappointed because the game looks a lot more to Resident Evil 4, which was a great game but not really a survival game. Like in RE4 you aren't allowed to miss a lot of shots but if you're aim is good you'll never be short on ammo, some sequences are pure action but it also took the good things of the game with a great ambiance that give me the creeps more than once, good bosses and some true horror sequences. Gameplay wise I really cannot describe it better than the child of Resident Evil 4.

Technically I don't mind the two black lines that give a movie's style to the game (anyway you can deactivate them in the options) there wasn't any bugs during my playthrough and the graphics are okay thanks to great light effects that makes up for the average textures. But as an european player I have a complaint is that the game didn't include English voices (except in the United Kingdom of course) and that pisses off a pretty large community that don't want to hear wannabee actors doing voice overs when the english version have A-rank actors like Jennifer Carpenter and Anson Mount, really a stupid decision from Bethesda (As far as I know it's the only game of this generation in the case, and it was already pretty rare on the previous one).

Finally the story was fairly disappointing and just a mind to justify the horror but at least it will last 15 hours wich is good for the genre.

PS: If you buy the season pass (well only the two were you play Kidman are good but it's the same price if you buy them both or the season pass, might as well give a shot to the boring "Executioner"), the story gets a little better and in addition the gameplay of those is true survival horror, I really advise them they are great and last more or less 5 hours for the two about Kidman (if they were included I would rate the game a 9 instead of an 8).

In conclusion Evil Within is a good game especially if you like the horror genre, even if maybe there's a little too much action. it might be the beginning of new horror franchise that could really be a reference if they follow the path of the two DLC's "The Assignment" and "The Consequence".

Music: it can be extremly haunting at times while none existent in other areas of the game but ultimately the music fits well with the enviroment your playing in. Sound: i think this is where the evil within really shines! Walking or running down hall ways, streets, forests or caves have never been scarier. The enemies grunts, screams and moans are very convincing ESPECIALLY when your being chased by the four arm woman(dam she wqs tough to beat) Enemies: the enemey designs are pretty creepy like the tall monster that seemed to be nailed to a cross to the really deformed bosses which are a combination of gross looking and hard to kill. Gameplay: sebastion has lots of weapons at his disposal but the crossbow will most likely be your bestie throughout the game oh and the matches and very helpful when you want enemies to STAY dead! Besides shooting though, the gameplay is pretty straight forward, you can shoot duck/duck behind cover(kidman only) run etc. Scare factor: i'll give a solid 7 as the game deviates between traditional horror to actionmode in some areas, its balanced enough to where any fan of both genres will enjoy this game.

Now the negatives. Pop up/slash detail of background delay. In some areas of the game, particularly in the cinematics, some aspects of the background gets drawn in at the last minute. It isnt very distracting but noticable. Difficulty: this is probably the worst aspect of the game because in one section or room, the enemies can be pushovers while others will be difficult to kill especially since this game barely gi es you ammo(the most ammo i ever picked up was five bullets) Puzzels: puzzles exist in the evil within, just dont expect them to the brain teasers you experienced in games like silent hill or classic resident evil games.characters: besides the guy that runs mobius(the guy with the sinister shadow claws) i generally didnt care about sebastion or kidman, they werent badly developed, just nit developed to their full potential. Other than that, the evip within accomplished what it set out to do, give gamers a good scare while running through ruvik/ruben's twisted nightmare while doing everything you can to survive. This game gets a solid 8/10! Im looking forward to a sequel to this game in the future!

Highly underrated by the press. This game is quite fun, and technically it is completely competent. Graphically it ranges from good to stellar and I personally haven't had any problems with the controls at all. If you enjoyed Resident Evil at all, you will like this game I guarantee.

It is nothing like Outlast as it really is not that scary. I find this game to be an entertaining psychological thriller, somewhat like Until Dawn except with more ability to affect your environment. The set pieces, the environment, is quite well done and you can see that this game was given attention and love in the environment.

Don't be put off by the negative reviews. I don't know what those reviewers were expecting, but I can fully recommend this game as a great buy at it's current price for anyone who either wants a new Resident Evil type experience, or enjoys Hollywood style psychological thriller movies.

Very well done, glad to have it in my library of games.

    I'm giving this game a solid 8.
For reference, I'd give The Witcher 3 (10), Destiny The Taken King (7.5), MGSV (8.5 low because of the 2nd chapter), Bloodborne (9.5), Batman Arkham Knight (8.5).

This game is a solid 8 even for those who don't adore the genre. If you love the genre you'll probably be very, very glad you got this game. Lastly, definitely do buy the version with the DLC as the DLC is substantial and very additive to the overall experience. Honestly, the DLC is essential to the full narrative. I hate that these companies chop up good games and repack them this way, but if you are going to buy this game, buy it with the DLC.

I'll address a few of the major complaints here and show you the alternative to them.

People frequently say the Melee combat is useless
    - Do you think a punch or even a knife attack on a creature that is wrapped in barbwire and penetrated by half a dozen sharp objects... Do you think they'd be bothered by a punch, kick, or knife attack?

The people complaining about Melee, honestly they are probably FPS folks who are used to seeing their super blazing fast knife rip through someone's jugular like a blade of pure sunlight.

Short answer, the Melee combat is spot on for THIS game. If this were call of duty I'd see their complaint. However, the objective of this game is NOT to rack up kills folks. You are supposed to feel weak and afraid of conflict, not like a super human bad ass GI JOE from hell. The Melee is spot on.

People often say the graphics are bad.
    - the developers were obviously going for a Hollywood film type effect. I totally like it and think it works. I play on a 60" TV, leaving the black bars on all the time and honestly, this game looks really good. It is not all shiny and dripping with bloom, HDR, etc. The graphics look better than I need them to and again I feel like the people complaining about this game are not the target audience.

This is simply a better game than resident evil 4, the last real resident evil we had. Please don't be scared to purchase it. I very nearly passed this by based on the reviews, but it was on sale with the DLC for under $30.

This game is completely technically, story, and environmentally pleasing and you really gotta see it for yourself. Once you play this you'll likely question who the heck is writing these negative reviews and what their agenda is. Or at least I did. It's getting very difficult to trust reviews these days. I was burnt hard on Destiny which turned out to be a total flop imo as it had absolutely no story whatsoever (TTK is a step in the right direction though).

If you see this game with DLC for $30 or less, it's a steal plain and simple.
Even at $50 I think I'd personally feel satisfied, but it is currently at $30 and that is ludicrously good.
I know the reviews have been unkind to this game, but I say take a chance on this one. I did, and I'm very pleased. It's the true Resident Evil successor we've been waiting for.

    Have fun!

I should have heeded the warning of the gamestop employee when they said that this game was extremely frustrating. There are alot of mechanics where you die from one shot, I found my self dying many times throughout the game and almost just gave up on the game completely. Although i had the difficulty settings on casual, it was still very difficult. for me, this aspect took alot of the enoyability out of the game. how it been easier, i would have given the game a 9. Speaking of guns, the shooting mechanics are very satisfying and the upgrade system encourages going the extra mile and exploring the environments to find resources and spare parts. The story, however, is lacking. The main character is exremely uninteresting and reacts to things in an unbelievably apathetic way. The plot throws him from one situation to another in a scatter-brained manner, providing very little context. All in all, the evil within is what survival horror fans have been wanting since resident evil 4 and it's a must buy for next gen systems Expand

Most of the scares you will get in this game are from unplanned sequences where you just happen to be in a bad position and something randomly happens As a horror game I wasn't scared too often, as a mechanical game, it is very fun and offers depth to decisions. It is advised that you put restrictions on yourself like having to kill the bosses in specific ways that are mentioned in the titles if you want to feel more of a rush and urgency, which this game does quite often.
The game is a solid experience and is worth having in your library no matter how you view it, really giving you a sense of not fear, but suspense that fills the levels. This game is much better than most give it credit for, although go in knowing that it's slower than shooters and that stealth is very important in it. Once you master the techniques of the game that allow you to do more than simply knife killing and shooting everything, you'll start to feel much more comfortable. The length of the game is solid, not dragging on for too long with the same stuff but also not being a waste of money with how short the game is, overall the game isn't a perfect 10/10, but it's better than most others.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a great title if you're into horror games with a sick twist. In fact, the best way to describe is "a disturbing experience" that's totally worth playing, not only for the overall quality of the game itself, but also for the lack of alternatives at the moment.

As one progresses through the game, one comes across all sorts of documents (files, personal diary entries, audio tapes, newspapers, etc.) that reveal small pieces of information that, like in a puzzle, you have to put together yourself to get a grasp of what the hell is going on. There is no map, no objective or hints of any kind. You just have to play along, trying to avoid booby traps and large crowds of foes and collecting all the green gel in your path (the stuff required to upgrade your character's attributes and weapons). Exploration is key (the game will even unlock new weapons as a reward for your time spent wondering around, picking up everything). There are some good puzzles but, unfortunately, not so many of them.

Now the cons: the FPS drop is godawful. Although it's something I almost always overlook, in this game it can't go unnoticed; it's a really serious issue. Also, the original release of the game had black bands wasting around 30% of the screen. It took them almost 10 months to add an option in the menu to enable fullscreen mode.

    Minor spoiler:

Finally, Mikami stated that he wanted to create a game with horror as its essence (and without that much action), but the last part of the game fails at this, making you face some of the previous bosses yet again and with long shooting sections. Also, and at a personal level, I think that arming the enemies with guns, crossbows, dynamite, etc. is a poor choice to make enemies more dangerous.

I found myself continually shouting at the screen "MOVE!, WHY WONT YOU MOVE!", all of this accompanied by choice profanities and insults.. The main character is also lackluster and has zero personality. The other supposed main characters in the game make sporadic appearances, often disappearing for chapters on end, only to re-appear again having seemingly no connection to the overall story, a story which even when I came to the end made no sense to me.

Some of the boss fights were insanely difficult, made harder with the clunky controls and a protagonist that runs out of puff almost immediately. Upgrading this ability early is essential as later in the game it would be impossible to get through some of the chapters if he is still running out of steam after 3 seconds..again, very frustrating..more shouting at the screen.

Melee is useless..you could thump an enemy 15 times and it wouldn't do anything..

The graphics were okay but not quite as refined as some other games out there.

The chainsaw monster is straight out of Resident Evil, here by special invitation.

Ammunition...there is not a lot of it around and enemies take a lot of it to be killed. Some of the main boss fights will literally take multiple attempts to get through as memorizing the process or method in which they can be defeated is required, and all while trying to get the main character to actually move with some semblance of fluidity..

I didn't hate this game , it was generally okay but usually I would play a game on an easy or moderate setting the first time around to get a feel for it and then go back and immediately play it again on a hard setting, picking up and collecting things that I may have missed out on the first time around..I have no desire to do this with The Evil Within..Once was enough for me.

About a quarter through the game I WAS enjoying TEW, to the point I bought the season pass on special. We'll get to that nightmare later. The guy who came up with this steaming pile is riding first class on the nostalgia train. TEW is pretty much every Resident Evil game mashed together into HD Gore. The game is genuinely unsettling but the bleak, dark environments wear thin quickly, the characters are dull, the story is riddled with plot holes. The DLC tries to explain what is going on but its just as bad as the main game. I can't even be bothered continuing the review on this utter garbage. Jennifer Carpenter does a good job and she's the ONLY glimmer of light in this, the game that has written off the survival horror genre for me.
