I was quite excited about this title but when I played it I found it to cumbersome and annoying. Like Dead Rising there is very little give to the player which makes most of the gameplay way to difficult and frustrating. Example there are plenty of weapons such as rakes and sickles laying around on the ground but you can't pick them up to defend yourself from several enemies at a time. The gun shooting is horribly inaccurate and when you shoot the zombies in the head they don't die. When you run of bullets and swing your axe once you are left defenceless against impossible AI like a giant chainsaw wielding zombie. Running is your only hope and the stamina gauge is way to small to run long distances. The cutscenes were very good and I enjoyed the look and feeling of the game but overall it's just to biased against the player. Expand

Make sure you save often. I found my self panicking when I'm near death and I haven't found a save, or check point in a while, but that only adds to the tension, and the fun of this game.
The presentations is fantastic, with a 2.39 cinema aspect ratio this game stands out from the crowd as a very stylized game.
The character design and enemies look fantastic, and the creepy sound and music keeps you on edge at every turn. The lighting is also top notch.
One scene that stands out is when Sebastion is limping down a narrow corridor with a chainsaw wielding maniac on his tail, and the lighting is coming from behind Sebastion, and the shadow of your pursuer is getting bigger and bigger, and the buzzing sound of the saw is getting louder, and louder, only to escape inches away from death, is a scene I won't forget for a long time.
The weapon customization is well implemented, and fun. and lots of reasons to go back and replay to earn the achievements, and upgrades.
A few complaints I have are sometimes the camera placement is a little to close to the protagonist that it makes it hard to see your surroundings.
I love the aspect ratio, but the developers should have went a little wider on the camera placement.
There's also a few texture pop ups, and a few clunky animation, but these complaints are minor and do nothing that take away from this great game.

Wow don't I wish I could play this game, if only it could run on my PS4 without stuttering or huge FPS drops . Only if the game was optimized well, even after the day one patch it isn't. The story and atmosphere is what you'd expect from the creator of Resident Evil. Too bad it's unplayable, more unplayable than how Skyrim was on the PS3.

As far as the game play you got to use your ammo and other supplies very sparingly, very violent game, guts and gore, blowing heads off and all that fun stuff. The only down side to this game is the widescreen, completely unneeded it is somewhat annoying in this game, other than that I love it! if your a fan of the scary, bloody games go get this one right now!

There are definitely some interesting techniques at play with the framing, camera movement, and seamless set changes, but all in all, the story and scares fail completely. The story is also so poorly developed it can't support the weight of its ideas and falls into hilarious absurdity.
When I heard that this was going to be a difficult game, I was extremely excited, but after 16hrs of playtime I only died a total of 30 times (a majority of those times from when the cutscenes randomly ended and something squashed/ shot/ filetted/ disemboweled, etc, me simply because I had no idea I was back in the game). I also ran out of ammo in only two instances, but that was quickly negated by the fact the game always has bolts ready for you.
RE4 had a lore to back up the absurd story, insanely memorable moments (that damn cabin), and an unmatched intensity. TEW just ends up being a bore.
I'd suggest checking it out as a rental or if the price drops to $30 or less.

To get a feel for how The evil within is to play dust off your PS2 and put in Resident Evil 4, have someone stand in front of your screen and periodically mess with your controller, then limit yourself to 3 rounds of ammunition for the whole game.

As connoisseurs of subtlety were clearly not the target audience for this game allow me to be clear: This game is a monumental disappointment. The trailers painted this game as being a psychological horror, riffing on the Cthulu mythos and Clive Barker-esque Gore, and coming off the high of playing the excellent P.T. and Alien: Isolation I was keen to see what Bethesda had in store for me.

Frustration and disappointment, it turns out.

Visually, the game is a step backward. Very rarely does it look like something current-gen. It's not that the models aren't well realised; they are, but jagged shadows, low resolution textures and a lack of depth of field betray a lack of polish. The monsters themselves are uninspired to an almost comical degree, and I found myself accidentally referring to them as Los Ganados more than once.
This, of course only applies to what you can see, which is very little. Black bars obscure the top and bottom of the screen. Whether they're there "for cinematic effect" or because Tango game works had trouble getting the game to run at the desired resolution is immaterial, it makes it hard to see what you're doing. The camera is constantly obscured by long grass, hanging cloth and other environmental decorations as well meaning you will frequently blunder into harm's way because you have no way of telling what's in front of you.
The camera itself is also unhelpful, with control frequently taken from you for dialogue, passing doorways and sometimes no clearly discernible reason. Even when it is technically under your control it seems to delight in filling the screen with the protagonist's torso rather than show the environment.

The characters look like they were lifted from some third rate anime about ghost detectives and I haven't heard such unconvincing dialogue since "there was an incident.... *waves arm vaguely*.....involving zombies..." I still have no idea who any of the characters are, except for the female cop at the start who is hilariously called Officer Kitten, or something that sounds very much like it and have no real motivation to learn.

This is a game that doesn't know what it is. There are flashes of resident Evil, snippets of Silent hill, hints of Battletoads and more than a whiff of that awful Evil Dead game on the PS1. There's stealth bits, but you can't play it as a stealth game. There's places to hide, but you can't really play it like outlast or Alien: Isolation, you get a gun, but only 3 bullets and the noise of it brings the horde. There's stuff to collect, but gameplay that discourages exploration by infrequent save points and enemies that are effectively unkillable in a direct confrontation. You get melée weapons that are moderately effective, but are destroyed after one use or disappear when you save, if you get to save. There's things you find that hint at a deeper story worth uncovering with careful exploration, and monsters that jump out shouting "OOGA BOOGA BOOGA" that flat out tell you there isn't.

Then there are some frustrating design choices. The game frequently takes control from you as your character, gruff blandson, grimaces his way through the story. Sometimes you can only run, sometimes you can't run.
The decision to have to burn enemies to make sure they stay down is one I can understand, but not condone. Re-generating enemies aren't fun. I put them on a par with escort missions and platforming bits in a first person shooter. We forgave it in Resident Evil 2 because it was new, and we didn't know better, but even then it was reinforcing the tenacity of what was to be the final boss, not every douche-level zombie in the game.
The levelling system seems out of place. There's no explanation as to why Gruff Blandson is ok with being hooked up to a brain injecting machine, nor why he's collecting the goop to inject. Neither is there an adequate explanation for why he's content to inject himself with syringes he finds lying around in the dirty gutters of a lovecraftian nightmare but that's none of my business, maybe he wasn't hugged as a child.

I'm not a purist. I enjoy schlock horror nearly as much as I enjoy finely crafted tension. I have no problem with lifting elements from other games and making them your own. My problem is when you are lifting elements from so many great games and still manage to MESS IT UP. Shinji Mikami did great work with the Resident Evil series, Dino Crisis, Onimusha etc but still does not seem to understand how to build tension, to make a fear greater than the sum of a game's enemies.

This game could have been more, SHOULD have been more.

    TL:DR - Son, I am disappoint.

I wanted to care about the story, but I found that by chapter 11, I was just kind of chugging along. The reason I am not giving this game a 9 or a 10 is because it is not perfect, nor is it a step down from perfection. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rough. That one word sums up how I feel about this game. The director tried to pull off a horror game that borders between action and survival, but I don't believe he accomplished his goal.

The game is closer to action than survival and this has probably confused some people, raising complaints about low ammunition supplies, awkward camera angles, and rather boring play. Yet, the player character's pacing is not quite action. Gamers looking for a survival experience might not like the uninteresting usage of playable elements to accomplish goals. Both sides of the complaint are probably correct.

Then there are story and character credibility issues, which I can usually overlook for the sake of gameplay. I found them too annoying in The Evil Within. In the beginning, your character's leg is injured and you limp along. Not much later, you are running around and it's never explained how except we might assume it's all just a bizarre dream. Or something. A monster quickly scales fences like an angry spider, hops around with springy agility, and tears apart metal chain link as if it were warm butter, yet it can't seem to jump across some piping to attack you or break down checkpoint and cutscene doors.

Occasionally, you experience a WTF moment, like going back for Joseph's glasses after escaping a zombie dog mini-boss, or whatever it was. Afterword, your character comments how ridiculous that was - so why include it? I won't go into more of these moments because they are too painful to reconsider.

Top this game off with a somewhat confusing story and you've got a mess of a game. The story starts confusing and only begins to make some sense as you progress. Sometimes it's interesting, if not a little angsty and cliche. (Great! another black haired monster that looks like it crawled out of the movie "The Ring".) I give the director credit for trying a disconnected plot structure but he can get away with this immediate confusion only because the player might be compelled to continue playing out the action first, hoping the story eventually makes sense. If this had been a book and your focus was on just the story, the reader probably would have quit after the first or second chapter.

I'm not even sure I find the game scary or fun to play. I can think of a number of horror games, such as Fatal Frame, that I enjoy much more than this title. Many of them on the PS2; so, sometimes I go back and play them. I don't think I will do the same for this title

First off, here are the two big annoying things with the game: forced letterbox ratio. In an attempt to be cinematic, they decided to go with a widescreen resolution. I find that very annoying, as I like to be able to see everything on my screen. The second really annoying thing is the very narrow FOV. I understand that the game is going for a claustrophobic feel, but again, I like to see things on my screen.

On the positive side of things, this game completely nails what being a survival horror game is all about, bar a couple chapters. Amusingly, I found those couple chapters to be very Resident Evil 4-esque, and the game is paced rather alike to Resident Evil 4, although I find the subject material to be far more compelling, as it evokes a stronger Silent Hill feel than Resident Evil. When the game does get its encounters and its tone right, the game is brilliant, but when it's completely off-tone, and you're in an arena trying to defeat hordes of enemies, the game is really, quite off-putting. I'm really in two minds about The Evil Within, but at the end of the day, I really enjoyed what I played, and I think that has to do with good the combat feels and actually, a pretty compelling story, even if the characters are flat and underdeveloped. The Agony Crossbow provides a lot of strategic options for you, as well as stealth, bottles, and even such a simple mechanic as burning bodies with matches. You have to be careful about what you upgrade on your character as choice really does matter on that front, as you, by no means, will be able to upgrade even remotely close to everything.

In short, this game is pretty hit or miss, but for me, the hits were strong enough to truly make this a very compelling experience with the amount of combat variety offered to you, but yet, managing to strangle your resources down to a minimum. I didn't have much of an issue conserving resources on Survival difficulty, but Nightmare mode is a whole different ball game. This is the best survival horror experience in a fair amount of time. (I did play Alien: Isolation [and reviewed it], you can check out my review and why it didn't really stick with me, if that tickles your fancy)

Instead of a traditional review, I will be directly addressing common praises and complaints people have made with this game.

First I'll start with what the game does right. The best parts make up most of the game, and that's why my score is so high. My favorite aspect was the gameplay. Gunplay, pacing, and a well designed HUD and learning curve all add up to be one of the most fun games I've played in a long time. The difficulty is higher than your average "dude bro" shooter, but its is fairly well balanced and (mostly) not cheap. There were a couple of boss fights that seemed very unfair to me, with one in particular resulting in ~15 deaths because of horrible level design. *Spoiler* That boss being the second encounter with Laura.

Another thing that deserves a lot of praise is the environments. The first 10 chapters of the game in particular is phenomenal. Creepy lakeside towns, a mysterious mansion, and a trap-riddled tomb are just a few of the many horrifying places you'll visit. The great soundtrack and audio design put these environments over the top and make you genuinely feel nervous, and sometimes tense or afraid.

Other positive things worth mentioning is the overall level design, awesome enemy design, immersive lighting, nods to past classic horror games, long replay values, and genuinely cool story (although it is admittedly shallow, more on that later).

On the downside, this game has several problems keeping it from being perfect, most notably the technical issues. There is painfully obvious texture popping, sometimes weird animations, frame stutters, inconsistent graphical quality, and the biggest culprit, the camera. The camera is the worst camera i've seen in years. It constantly shows Sebastian's back in a way that intrudes on your own view. Entering rooms will make you nervous because you can't see what's in there due to obstructed views. In confined spaces the camera will also collide with the environment, moving forward and back to adjust itself so as not to move behind walls or other meshes. It can be a struggle to get a good angle as you explore environments such as hallways, caves, houses, or other such enclosed areas. However I will note that shooting is a not affected here since it basically zooms in close enough to not bump into the environment.

Another problem is the shallow-ish story. The majority of the story is Sebastian's journey through the crazy world of The Evil Within, which is fine for what it is. If I had to compare this game's general storytelling to another game, it would be the first Gears of War. While both games have a great back story, they aren't necessarily told in game well or even at all. Sebastian's journal entries would have made for some great cut scenes or a great way to relate his troubles in throughout the game to his past. After reading them I at least felt some sort of attachment to him. In the end though, the game's gameplay and environments are enough to make it a great game.

The final chapter left me with some answers, but far more questions. Hopefully the dlc remedies this.

Overall this was a very fun but slightly flawed horror experience. I highly recommend it to any fans of survival horror or Resident Evil 4 (which it is obviously based on). It deserves closer to an 8.5, but I chose nine since the current rating is far too low.

The game starts out very well, setting the atmosphere and continues to hold a grasp of this atmosphere. This is the only game where I've felt that you are never safe. No matter where I am, I get the feeling that something is going to happen or someone is going to appear, which is a feeling that not many games have invoked in me before. I get several jump-scares every time I play. Since the borders are so big, you don't have a lot of perspective,. which causes you to miss many things, including bombs etc.

However, in my opinion, this game's worst aspect is its difficulty and boss fights on normal difficulty. It's not enough that normal enemies need around ten punches before they get down and they can one hit you, but the boss fights are EXTREMELY and meaninglessly difficult! The first real boss I encountered (minor boss fight spoiler) was the one where you had to get the chainsaw from him. He breaks out, and runs after you with a chainsaw. The first thing you try to do is lure him to the bomb that is activated when you're near it, which means you have to run past it so it doesn't explode on you. You're hoping that when the boss follows you, it'll explode on him, but it doesn't, which doesn't make ANY sense. So you shoot the bomb which seems to have almost no effect on the boss. You then run away a bit, since the boss starts running after you right away and it can one-hit you no matter what. But you get tired SO fast (after five-seven seconds) and you need fricking five seconds more to recover, where you're standing COMPLETELY still, not able to do anything whatsoever.

This kind of difficulty ruins the game for me, because what fun is it to retry every boss fight fifty times, and win it based on finally being lucky and not aiming skill? This ruined the game for me, which is why I gave it a score of five.

The creepy environment was so submersive, but was so dark that I found everything to blend together in an almost muddy fashion. The storyline is one of the most original I've encountered in a horror game in a long time, but found myself getting aggravated when I felt it wasn't progressing around hour 30 or so. The gameplay is fresh and challenging, yet at some points it was brutally balls to the wall hard. Another gripe was the moans and groans in the distance, which were added to enhance the atmosphere, but frequently misled me to believe there were enemies nearby. But another thing that made me happy about the game is that it didn't rely on jump scares to freak me out. So all in all, The Evil Within is a great addition to any gamers library, and a wonderful triumph in the horror genre in over a decade. Expand

the only bad things i can say about the game is the frame lock and the stupid black bars( you can fix it but still it ruin the overall experience)

This game is just boring and the story is devoid of any originality. I thought I could be scared... but I suppose the developers forgot what's the source of the fear: some really unexpected events. I don't even understand why that game is considered as a survival/horror one. The graphic quality is decent but there's a lot of problems with textures.

I've read mixed reviews on this game, and I honestly don't understand people's problems with the game. I didn't find any problems with the camera angle. The storyline was good and the game itself is actually a very well made game and it will be memorable to me, even in the future.
If you have this game or you do get this game, keep playing till after chapter 4 - that's when the game is at it's best. I suggest anyone who likes survival horror games or Resident Evil to buy it.

The Evil Within is not scary - it is tense in the first couple of hours, but you'll start to see that the majority of the scares and horror elements are cliche and not revolutionary in any sense. After a couple of hours, the game simply becomes gather-and-run, as most enemies take decent amount of bullets to kill, along with burning their corpses using the very limited matches the bland protagonist can carry. Except the bosses. Expect to be one-shot by all of these unless you use the mostly obvious tools of the environment, like fire, to kill them. Oh, expect to die a lot too, as the game does rely on trial-and-error in some sections, which will kill you a lot. This takes a lot of the tension out of dying, any by extension a lot of the scares and intense moments. You'll want to upgrade Seb's sprint ability too, since he gets puffed out after a few seconds. You will be fighting the camera the whole game, and the black bars serve a more frustrating purpose than any cinematic one. The atmosphere and gunplay is great, though, which is why this is only getting an average review, but this is simply a harsh survival-action game under the misleading title of 'survival horror' that will feel very familiar in terms of content to all those who have played the first four main Resident Evil titles, particularly RE 4. In another note, anyone who experiences motion or "simulation" sickness should NOT play this game. The buggy framerate, tight camera and narrow FOV (because of the black bars) combine to make playing absolutely nausea inducing.

I don't care that this doesn't look and feel just like a Hollywood movie. It's not the Last of Us, it's a Shinji Mikami game. Clever gameplay, crazy tension, great atmosphere, and some very wonderfully inventive situations, but dumb B-movie style dialogue and story, which adds to the charm. I don't see how any Survival Horror fan could hate this, but then again, the standard has been set in a way that Survival Horror nowadays is really just cinematic story-based thrillers with horror elements. I feel like a lot of people expected something more modern, and got something more classic-styled, then interpreted as it being a bad game. The only problems I've had with it at all are texture pop-in issues, and some screen tears here and there, both which are easy things to overlook. That's about it really. Expand

The graphics for the environments are great, and at times this game feels honestly terrifying, with level crafting that makes you feel a powerless and impending sense of dread at progressing. Some of the area designs are quite familiar - mental hospitals and dark jungles and such - but they manage to be executed so well that it doesn't quite matter that they're not the most unique.

Having said that, though, while I feel this game excels in creating atmosphere, it excels yet more so in ruining that atmosphere by over the top cinematic scenes that would fit right in alongside Michael Bay-like explosions. Almost 10 minutes into the game, and a man with a chainsaw blunders around screaming after you, destroying any sense of subtle dread I felt, and not 5 minutes after that, the entire city begins collapsing in a catastrophic earthquake, with no immediate or adequate justification. Then, we morph into a level up area that fills so many horror cliche checkboxes that I'm less creeped out and more bored by how nondescript the black-and-white not-really-a-dream creepy-mental-hospital.

The enemies themselves aren't conducive to a horror, either. Zombies in all but name-only, they resemble the cartoonish bosses of Resident Evil more than the oddly unsettling variants found in Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren. They're also introduced in the familiar dramatic way - the first one I encountered sparked a cutscene, which already removed my immersion, in which barbed wire exploded all over their bodies - and about an hour or two into the game, I stopped feeling the tenseness that I had during the hospital scene at the start. I began to recognise that this game wasn't out to frighten me, it was out to make me jump. The scares became predictable in the same way Resident Evil's were.

The gore engine isn't properly applied, either. This game takes an approach that I would find more appropriate in the mind of a 13 year old teenage boy - the more guts, the better! It doesn't fit with the tense and subtle aura of terror the game is trying to create? Who cares, severed heads and people exploding into barbed wire, woo!

Similarly, the story is hanging by a thread. Like most Japanese survival horror games, it is sustained mostly by in-game documents that provide less in the way of exposition and more in the way of filler text, there to give the illusion of depth or gravity to the situation, only to fall flat with me. It never feels properly woven into the narrative, instead coming off as a cheap tacked-on aside that they added when someone pointed out that games have to actually have a plot. The characters are thimble-deep, only existing as an avatar for you to maneuver around the spooky landscape, a far cry from the fleshed out James Sunderland, whose psychological troubles are reflected even in the town itself. There's no connection or mystery: start at point A, go to point B, get jump scared by some zombies, arrive at point B, find teammate, lose teammate, repeat.

The gameplay, too, is lackluster. I would often find that controls stuck and the camera whizzed around into awkward places, sometimes ending up in an unfair death. However, I feel as if this issue isn't really game-breaking. It certainly isn't new; even Silent Hill 2, the father of all horror games, had beyond appalling camerawork and tank-like controls that got me killed more than a few times. The Evil Within is much more navigable than that, even if a little frustrating. In fact, it could even contribute to the sense of fear you feel when being chased by whatever cookie-cutter monster of the week locates you.

The game controls akin to Resident Evil 4, although the controls are a bit more sluggish. It's important to note that the developers have done this intentionally in order to add to the tension and difficulty of the game. This can all be managed and refined by finding a substance known as green gel throughout the game, and upgrading your abilities and weapons. Once you have done so, you'll notice that the game begins to handle much more easily, but again you have to EARN that. Personally, I appreciate their approach with this; it gives gamers a greater feeling of accomplishment throughout their journey. The story is one that is ever evolving, and the game will literally toss you around through various encounters and scenarios that will literally keep you scratching your head throughout it. The dots to begin to connect as you persevere, whether you seek comfort in that is completely up to perspective. While this game seems to take after the 'action 3rd person shooter' of previous Resident Evil titles, it does give you a very different feeling in the lack of resources available. You cannot stock up on ammunition and health (unless you upgrade the ability to), and even if you do resources are hard to come by. You will often feel like you have what you need, but you will NEVER feel like you have too much. Graphically speaking, the game is far from superior. Current gen or next gen, it simply isn't the best looking title on the market. That being said, it is done well enough to the point that you won't be overly worried about pixel perfect textures, and while said textures aren't always perfect, the atmosphere throughout the entire game will keep you engaged regardless. The Evil Within was very tastefully done, and brings back elements of anxiety and tension that we have not seen in horror video game titles in years. It may not be perfection, but it is definitely worthy of praise for it's contribution to the survival horror genre. Expand

Now, obviously there is a lot of action/combat found within this game. But I can't even count how many times I was frantically scavenging for bullets and lose parts just to take out a single enemy. Every time I hear, "Out of ammo?" And was dry firing lead to some very hectic and tense moments.

The story, music, presentation, and atmosphere are also great! The story could have been a little better, it tends to get a little convoluted but nothing to get upset about. The music is chilling and haunting, making the hairs on the back of your neck prick up. The presentation and the atmosphere are OUTSTANDING, the art team behind this game really outdid themselves. The environments are superbly put together and are constantly giving out a very eerie vibe. Absolutely loved the atmosphere.

My only real gripe is that the game is relativley short and not very graphically impressive, now it's easily replayable on harder difficulties and for you collectors out there. But the game wraps itself up somewhere between 15-20 hours. It's decent, but not long enough for my tastes.

The graphics aren't going to "WOW" you..there are some texture pops, some frame stutters but nothing I really even noticed. The game is really that immersive. And around Chapters 5 and 6 and from then on, the games graphics really do start to shine. Seriously, it's not a huge gripe, but being that it's on PS4 and XB1, you'd think they would have spent just a little more time on them. BUT ITS THE GAMEPLAY THAT COUNTS.

If you're on the fence, just get it. I love all horror games, but recently it's been a lot of games like Outlast(great btw), Amnesia, Daylight, etc. They're good games but this is the perfect blend.

The sound is superb and creates amazing atmosphere while playing in small room on home cinema. The controls are smooth and responsive, I got used to all fast and do not have any problems with camera. To save ammo I do a lot of stealth kills which works quite fine, as well melee combat with hatchets, torches, etc. Sometimes it is also better to run away and hide. The observation and patience is also important for avoiding traps and using them on your enemies afterwards. I love to lure group of chasing me zombies into dedicated place and then activate the trap to kill all of them. Zomies and other creatures are tough to kill, it takes few pistol head shots to floor them (with shotgun 1 or 2) but even floored many times you need to burn them as they might still get up (in general, if after flooring zombie's head is still in one piece, it is better to burn them). The game has a few obvious problems. The graphics were very disappointing at times, at its best it looks like a good looking last gen game in a higher resolution. At its worst there is clipping and texture pop in, blurry, grainy draw distances.(And an incredibly annoying letterbox aspect ratio), there is a lot of stuff you need off the ground as well as a lot of dangers, limiting the players view was just plain stupid. As the vague story allows for the players to but tossed from one traditional scary location to the next. Its a bit nonsense but constantly changing locations keeps the game feeling fresh.

I think this game was made for the core survival horror fans, and it succeeds very well. Getting through a few minutes of the game feels like a victory as every part of the game brings new challenges. I really enjoyed the game, when I was swearing and about to throw my controller.

I wanted desperately for the Evil Within to be a good game, I really did. It looked the part from all the positive press, and seemingly gorgeous graphics. But not even two hours in, I set the game aside for good.

The one word to describe the Evil Within is overindulgent. From the opening moment where detective Castellanos is being chased by the chainsaw wielding maniac, it becomes apparent that the game is hell-bent on being akin to a haunted house attraction during Halloween season. The game is literally begging you to be scared, from the bright lights and the loud sounds, and the forced camera angles and the slow gameplay. The monsters yell and there is no time for subtlety. Atmosphere aside, I had absolutely horrible hit detection throughout and by the time I was at the village, being swarmed by enemies, I realized that I was having no fun at all.

The Evil Within wants to disempower the player, which can be done more smoothly. Instead, the player is forced to fight against large mobs, with a nauseating camera and horrible aiming reticule. If you give the player tools to fight back, make the system run smoothly! Resident Evil 4 is a prime example! The game was terrifying BECAUSE the gunplay and the character movement felt so smooth. The scares came naturally.

Skip this game. Just writing this review makes me angry.

If you are looking for a well balanced, tense and engaging experience, along with an amazing and chilling atmosphere to round it all up, then just get this game already.

The Evil Within has great gameplay first off, while it won't be the smoothest experience ever it still holds firm. Of the many times I died I never felt it was due to the controls being bad or sluggish, every time I died I never felt cheated and knew what I had done wrong, and thus was able to correct my mistakes on the next try. This being said the game is tough (played on Normal/Survival), it isn't for those who see themselves as casual gamers, you have to really engage yourself and focus on the game. Don't fret as it isn't as punishing as games like Dark Souls; the checkpoints and general play of The Evil Within is forgiving enough to get you through. Even with ammo running scarce in the heat of battle I always somehow managed to pull myself through as the game literally gives you just enough ammo to survive, down the the last bullet. You must stayed focused and make your shots count to the best of your ability though of course. The only downside to the gameplay I would say is the stealth, it's rather finicky, as sneaking up on enemies is hard as they often detect you if you waste but a second before killing them. As far as sneaking around a house or halls to scavenge for supplies though, it does well. The stealth never bothered me in terms of using it to kill enemies though, since I usually prefer getting into the best position and gunning them down. As you get used to the combat your abilities, guns, and health will be improved as you collect brain gel to upgrade things in the 'sanctuary.' Note: you can upgrade further in following playthroughs, like in RE4. It should be noted that this game is very tense at times as you will often be close to death constantly as some enemies have the ability to instantly kill you, though these attacks are usually avoidable as long as you know your surroundings.

Now on to the atmosphere in the game. The 'air' or vibe of the game is very reminiscent of RE4 with some Silent Hill in the mix, which often works brilliantly. Don't take that literally though as the game also has something that makes it feel distinct and unique. I would like to note that a lot of people think it feels like Outlast, I don't understand this at all, but okay. The use of sounds and music in this game is also brilliant from the calming Clair De Tune that plays near your 'sanctuary' to the tense siren sounding track and the maniacal playing of the music when you fight Laura (aka spider lady) the music keeps things fresh and involving. The design of the of the environment is also amazing as the graphics and attention to detail make the game feel dirty, corrupted, and insane at every turn. The only level I didn't like myself was some catacomb-like place in Chapter 7, but this is merely my own opinion. This game is cinematic as well since the overall appearance of the surroundings and effects just makes the world feel alive. While the character models can be hit and miss they still mix well with the surreal look of the world. Many people say the graphics are bad, but honestly, just ignore them, a game not looking photo-realistic doesn't make it 'bad,' I don't know when people started thinking games needed to entirely mimic life, but it's absurd. As long as a games' graphics serve the purpose of bringing it's own unique world to life then that's good enough for me.

The story is really good too, without going into detail I will say that it never fully tells you what to think of everything, it leaves it open to some speculation. In this case the story will be a hit or miss for some, I personally like trying to figure out a tricky, yet intriguing story. Though with this being said I would have liked a few more clues to kind of point me in the right direction as the story obviously has a true meaning and end. The story is also kind of bizarre, having that special Japanese charm, which allows the weird pacing of the game to make sense since when you get further in the story you will be able to understand why everything was so patched together.

In the end I have thoroughly enjoyed the game as a whole and couldn't recommend it enough to to those who love survival horror games like RE4, Dead Space, and SIlent Hill.

So with all of that, I give the game a 9 out of 10.

This is further compounded by a poor checkpoint system, that will leave you completing several minutes of monotonous running or door opening, just to return to the point of aforementioned cheap death. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think 9 is a fair score for this game. It is hands down one of the most tense, atmospheric and genuinely artistic games I have played in years.

Although the main character has the charisma of a damp slice of gluten free bread, the world itself is truly intriguing and engaging. The game rewards your bravery and will to explore but also sending you flying into 37 separate pieces for the slightest slip up.

Is it fun? Oh my god yes.

Is it hard? In parts yes, but it really does encourage you to observe and adapt to your surroundings to be successful.

Is it worth a buy? 100% yes, if for nothing else the hours of game play ahead is much better value for money than some of the dross out there.

You don't know what's going to happen around the corner, it's pretty creepy as well. The character designs fit right in with the blood and gore, the enemies in this game are really disgusting, and the bosses are pretty damn terrifying.
The sound in this game is amazing, the sound creeps you out enough to give you chills down your spine, especially during cutscenes. There's a certain type of enemy in the game were you will have to rely on the sound to defeat it, and it's easily accomplishable with the sound.
The story in the game reels you in but disappears thru the first half of the game, it keeps you wanting more but doesn't give it to you. It makes me think that Shenji Mikami wanted you to think of wants going to happen before it does, the story is the only negative part about the game but gets better in the last half.
The gameplay is where the Evil Within shines. The gunplay is so smooth it makes me think that this game could have been an action game like Uncharted.. Its really fun thinking of diffrent ways to defeat your enemies especially when you run out of ammo. The bosses in the game are some of the best parts through out the game, they give you completely diffrent scenarios with each boss and every single one is completely diffrent from the last.
The Evil Within is easily the best survival horror game since Dead Space and maybe better than that.
Shinji Mikami has done it again and has made one of the most memorable game in recent years.

Survival horror is enjoying a new awakening by Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within.

Mikami has done. This is what should have been at the time Resident evil 4 and it really was not. The terror and tension are present in the game, we find enemies that we can not defend for lack of resources and our only option is to flee from them by stealth. A great atmosphere, gore, an interesting story and interesting characters and gameplay of RE4 with numerous improvements. His only blemishes are outdated technical section, a camera that is uncomfortable until it achieves the happy master and black stripes. Hopefully verifications the option to edit the latter two options using a patch because it is possible.

YES TEW is a survival horror. He has horror and tension, tries to frighten the player. It also has survival confront the enemies is not a good idea because it does not usually go well served health and normally bullets fail to kill all. We must find another way to kill and run away from enemies: Stealth. Which seems like a wise move.

What game has the action? And yeah? Obviously, there will come a time when we have the weapons and the character so much better to be inevitably destroy all enemies based shots. This also happens in survival horror classics like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, where now we have our pistols / shotguns / rifles / grenade launcher menu with an assortment of ammunition and plants / energy / aid kits / Sprays Drinks arrives. Although this depends on the player, always seems to be forgotten by the more nostalgic. This is what Mikami calls "Overcoming the horror".

On references to other games, references are elements and nods to Resident evil (Of course, since the game is the creator of it). A nod to Pyramid head ... and nothing else. All other elements are extracted culturilla general terror and Japanese mythology.

If you are able to ignore their minor flaws, you will enjoy with The Evil Within.

All in all, 9 or so/10 for me. My gripes are mainly on the tech side, which I have a feeling is due to id Tech 5 and them not knowing what to do with it. In many ways it surpasses RE4, and in some ways it also falls short. But The Evil Within is better than RE4 in my eyes. A lot of said reviews bashing the game simply because they feel the game is too hard for them i mean really?! Honestly if you've ever played a survivor horror game in your life or have the slightest amount of common sense for that matter, you really wouldn't be dying that much in this game. It's meant to be played at a slower pace- it's not some **** call of duty clone where you run through each room absorbing enemy damage like some bullet sponge boss (a la Destiny) yes you have limited ammo in this game but if you play it correctly and actually look around your surroundings properly (break open boxes etc) you should have no problem finding enough ammo to deal with the enemies you will encounter along the way how do i know this? because thus far i have made it to chapter 7 WITHOUT HAVING ACTUALLY RUN OUT OF AMMO FOR EVERY SINGLE WEAPON I OWN EVEN ONCE. It confounds me how crappy at games the reviewers who gave this game a negative review without any actual basis must be because seriously it's not that hard. Graphics wise, this game isn't really all that bad either, i have seen alot of people comparing it to the last of us, saying that it's graphics are actually worse than a last gen game but that isn't completely the case, i mean has anyone actually taken the time to look at a damn tree in the last of us?? the approach the developers took to modeling them is completely one dimensional and outdated, where as in the evil within, i have actually seen some better foliage design techniques- my point is, it's not really accurate to say that the games graphics are terrible, some things were done well, others not as well, but overall the game looks pretty good and shouldnt bother you unless you are a total graphics whore.

Gameplay wise the game plays kinda like a cross between RE4 and TLOU but leans more towards the resident evil side, which i for one enjoy. the various mechanics present in the game (especially those dealing with combat) aren't at all outdated, they are simply pinpointed towards increasing that feeling of despair that the developer of a horror game surely wants their audience to feel while playing their game. The camera controls can be slightly annoying at times but you get used to them pretty quickly, and the story really isn't all that bad, in fact if you did your research on this game, you would know that the story is meant to seem somewhat irrational, YOU ARE INSIDE OF THIS MAN'S HEAD FOR CHRIST'S SAKE and this is actually something that i applaud the developer for because it simply means that they have more freedom to do what they want with the game. The atmosphere and art direction in this game is also quite good, the enemy character design is interesting and terrifying at the same time and the breaking up of the level design into clastrophobic as well as open areas is done in all the right places.

Overall, if you are a survival horror fan you will definitely want to pick this one up, it isn't the most amazing game ever but it definitely is a good game, one that I, a long time survival horror fan, has, and will continue to enjoy in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely horrendous game, I went into the hype for this game thinking it was going to be mix of Amnesia, Outlast, and some form of actiony game, when all I got was Resident Evil 4 [ 2 ]. There was so many problems with this game, coming from the PC side, I couldn't even imagine the issues on the Console versions.

First of the many problems, the story line. The story is almost non-existent. You're left in the dark for a good 5 or 6 hours until you reach chapter 9, I mean literally, you have no idea what to fathom because there is a empty pocket where the story should be. You are just fighting monsters and trying to save your partners again, and again, and again. Then you cycle through another zone, the many scenes you endure will not alone lead you amiss but will confuse you more than you already were.

Graphical issues are atrocious, I have to unlock the console to get 60FPS? Are you kidding me, what year is this, 1994? Why do you lock FPS at 30 expecting the game to run smoothly, especially since the size ratio is like 16:4. Apart from the terrible FPS, there are graphical bugs such as monsters flying through the air, or, or my favorite, you falling through the floor doing an action.

Originality is completely misconstrued. There are so many stolen parts to this game I can't even begin to describe them. The first that caught my eye and confirmed this theory true was chapter 7 or 8. When you have to place the stone slabs into the wall to proceed through the locked wall. Seems familiar right? Yeah, because it was taken out of the Ramon Salazar zone from Resident Evil 4. They share almost identical scenarios. The grabbing of the tentacles pulling you into the rotating cylinders of spikes, where you must shoot the glowing button on the top to release yourself; stolen, Dead Space 2. I mean there is some forms of originality, such as the step into taking the game towards more of a emotional ride whether you can stomach the gore, or deaths scenes, but aspects of game-play are nothing new, this game does nothing new other than ramp up the death and gore, all that's new nothing to see here. I resorted to cheating to make the game more of a meal to stomach, but eventually it just continued to go down a path of the same **** over and over and over again, I had to stop.

Monsters, guns, ammo etc was absolutely mind boggling. I found more ammo for a pistol than I did a gun that would actually help me, I mean, I have 4 **** guns for christsakes and I get ammo for the pistol almost religiously. The sub-bosses were a nightmare, because of the lack of ammo or simply the lack of control over the character resulting in a 1 shot kill from almost any sub or regular boss in the game. This only proves further that the game is no where near a 'Horror', but more of a run and gun scene. The only time I felt some slight form of horror was the very very very beginning when the monster was slaughtering the alive corpse next to you. As I progressed, the game-play just extended past the horror aspect and just delved straight into a Action game.

Overall this game should not be bought unless you want a 'slightly' better looking Resident Evil 4. If you want a game 100% better, make sure to check out every Dead Space, and Resident Evil games to understand the true ploy of horror and suspense.

Unless you can hit them with a headshot over three times with the poor aiming mechanic you are out of luck. Even then, the game fails to register hits in some circumstances. Take a enemy "Sleeping" on the ground. I pumped four shots to the head point blank before and during its animation to stand up. Somewhere in there, god mode is activated and it doesn't matter what you do. Trying to melee a enemy is futile unless you are doing a sneak attack. You can hit them as much as you want, they will not stagger. Poor game mechanics is just the beginning of the games terrible life. On a 65'' television, why is my vision limited to half the screen width? I'm sorry, I thought this was 2014 developers. The fact this game was launched on the PS4 and Xbox One for full price when it is clear the developers made this game for the last generation consoles is sick. The entire game is nothing more than a hide in the dark and watch patrol paths simulator, while being forced to have your television display a game in letterbox. Just another bad game made by developers published by Bethesda. Bethesda, please stick to publishing your own games. Expand

graphics are fantastic, despite some poor texture qualities ( which is due to the engine ) and some frame rates problem which does not bother at all the overall visual Fidelity is really beautiful and fantastic .

However, for me, this is where the fun had stopped. Clunky controls and camera issues hinder your most basic movement, melee combat is very plan unlike the creative "combo" melee hits in "The Last of Us".

Its also worth noting the very constant texture popping and bad frame rate drops- personally, I would have expected better performance, especially on the next generation consoles.

On first impressions - The Evil Within is not the most outstanding game ever made but if you are a die hard survival horror fan, this one is for you.

This game is a disappointment. they promised and got a lame horror splatter game. The atmosphere is a few hours back and you only have to compete against hordes of stupid enemies. The burst then times really hard.

Being consistently limited from resources and ammo as I travel through the games world and fighting creatures unlike anything I have seen in a game (shoots enemy in the head 4 times/ still standing and trying to kill you!).
This game however has some outdated graphics considering what the game required from my pc as im getting 57fps without capping as it only supports up to 59 fps during gameplay.

First off, the graphics are similar to that of a PS2 HD remake - perhaps even a little worse. In other words, the graphics are simply unacceptable. On top that, there is absolutely no story whatsoever along with some serious rendering issues. To add to the list, the game has also failed to master the art of a quick loading screen. The game is by no means "easy" and reloading a checkpoint can take as long as two minutes - which, in this day and age, is not acceptable - the developers have really failed to capitalize on the PS4's processing and graphical capabilities. However, as a true horror fan, the enemies do look pretty cool and there are some decent concepts - which is why my score is a "3" and not a big fat "0". Although that may be true, it is more than clear that the developers decided not to put any amount of effort into this game. The Evil Within truly raped my expectations and I am very dissatisfied with the insane lack of application put into the game. Very unprofessional. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe horror games should be scary, fun, or both. The Evil Within manages to (mostly) do both. Shinji Mikami's horror opus may play like a survival horror "greatest hits" but that's not a weakness but a strength. If you have played any recent Resident Evil games you will notice similar gameplay acting as foundation for a grittier, darker, and more punishing survival horror game.

I personally love horror games, but I assure you my love does not make me blind to this game's shortcomings. First, let's get some technical issues out of the way:

    - There is significant pop-in (mostly at the beginning of a cut scene)
    - There is clipping (most notably is being able to walk through AI allies)
    - There are shadow glitches and the occasional low-res texture

I never had a game-breaking glitch or have my game freeze. The graphics are good for what they are. Although, you can tell this game's development was shared with "last-gen" systems too.

    - The developers are dirty **** sometimes putting two boss battles back-to-back, pitting you against one-hit-kill enemies frequently, and forcing the player into "trial and error" more often than necessary. It borderlines (and becomes) frustration at times but the game is not as difficult as the Dark Souls series. The difficulty also stems from claustrophobic boss battles and annoying "chase sequences" that purposefully give you horrible camera angles.
    - I don't know whether the playable protagonist, Detective Castellanos is a badass or a dumbass. I found myself laughing at his repeated lines and how stoic he is within such a messed up world. After the umpteenth uttering of "what's going on here?" and other stupid in-game lines, it can start to detract from the experience unless you accept it as cheesy and bad, have a good laugh, and move on.

That's it for the bad. Pretty minor actually. WARNING: below are tips and observations with generalized SPOILERS that should help to reduce frustration and make it more fun. There is nothing specific about plot, enemies, or locations. Skip to the bottom if you want to see my completion time and # of deaths.

    - Enjoy the plot like you would a Jackson Pollock or Salvador Dali painting. Don't try to make sense of it.
    - This is a survival horror game. Ammunition is limited but don't let your ammo stock get full. I had to leave ammo behind. That's not good when every bullet counts.
    - Upgrade intelligently. You'll notice some things are a lot more useful than others.
    - Your character gets more winded than a fat kid chasing an ice-cream truck. His stamina is awful. You may consider him an Everyman, but I have no idea how he passed his fitness test to become a police officer.
    - The cutscenes are good, albeit they mostly make no sense. And the voice-acting quality is good despite frequent repetition.
    - Sometimes you will have AI companions. They aren't completely worthless. Let them take the shot instead of wasting precious ammo. Be warned though, if they get swarmed it can be game over. You can however heal them up whenever you need to without using any supplies.
    - This is a personal preference, but there are a couple failed scare opportunities. You'll notice them after you play a lot of the game. However, you will also be pleasantly surprised at how often they do take advantage of opportunities to throw scares at you.
    - There is only one section of the game I absolutely hated. It breaks my "be scary or fun" rule. It was neither. You'll know it when you get to it because it is uninspired and boring. Fortunately it isn't too long.
    - The game does have some obvious "let's drain their ammo" sections. Just focus on surviving, not conserving ammo. It will alleviate some frustration.
    - The game does very little hand holding and I died like 5 times in the first 5 minutes of the game because they just get right into the trial and error aspects of the game.
    - There are some amazing boss battles and some I dreaded that ended up being a lot more enjoyable than I thought they'd be.
    - My pulse was pounding and I found myself begging not to die on many occasions. I also couldn't help myself from freaking out, jumping from a scare, yelling at my character to "go, go, go" it was a great experience!
    - I'm glad this game makes combat enjoyable, but good luck with stealth kills. Enemies are practically omniscient, they'll turn around at the worst times, or you'll get spotted by another enemy.
    - You're character has abnormally strong kicks and punches... when attacking crates and barrels. Otherwise, he might as well be slapping enemies with his glove; that is how impotent melee can be.
    - Destroy the little white statues!
    - You will learn to hate bombs.

Overall, if you like survival horror you shouldn't be disappointed.

True to form they make it worth your while to start a new game+. I completed my first play-through in less than 20 hours on standard difficulty with 49 deaths; better than the IGN reviewer but I hope you can do even better. Good luck!

And frankly, it's really sad to see companies still hiring people to post positive reviews after Gamergate. Some are even saying "game of the year". Yeah.... ****ing.... Right.

I really wanted to enjoy this game. Truly. But the MISERABLE controls and shoddy graphics make me feel like I'm in a time warp. It's sad when the scariest thing about a horror game is how badly it plays. The ambiance and all that is scary, but in a cheesy, gory way. Nothing new and I've seen it done better many other times before. And the moment you feel immersed and wanting to get into the game, you will inevitably find yourself cursing at how your "tooltip" on how to disarm a trap popped up milliseconds before the trap exploded (even though you saw it a mile away and crept up on it). Or perhaps you'll be cursing at the stupid haymaker punches your character throws to defend himself. Or perhaps the mediocre graphics will ruin your immersion. I don't know.

The thing is, it's supposed to be a difficult game, but difficulty shouldn't come from poor design and implementation. ESPECIALLY on next gen consoles. There's so much wrong here that I don't even know where to start. Just goes to show you that a fancy name doesn't make a good game. Sorry Shinji, this is total garbage. You may have had a scary story lined up, but I can't even get into it because of how poor the game controls and mechanics are. 3/10 and that's being generous.

Trust me. Don't believe the hype/fanboys. And no, I'm not out to "get someone", nor do I work for another company. I'm just a guy who wasted $60 on this and felt compelled to post this review BECAUSE the game was so bad. Honestly, I literally stopped playing and came to warn others. Hope that speaks to the "authenticity" (or simple laziness) of those people scoring it a 10....

I hope anyone truly wanting a REAL review of this game can read this and know the truth. There are WAY too many "10s" on here for a game of this quality. Like a seriously suspicious amount. Just saying...

Graphics: I am very torn on the graphics for this game. I did think they looked good but there were some major technically problems for the PC. Admittedly my PC is not top of the line, but I suffered hickups in a number of places even though the frames were locked at 30 fps. In comparison I had no problems with Alien Isolation. This game gets a lot of points for style but then loses some on technical merit. 6/10

Gameplay: I actually really liked the gameplay. It has a good mix of action with some minor RPG elements. The items you could find and then use to upgrade various things about your character did add rather than detract in the case of this game. The only real issue I had with the gameplay was some technically issues. Sometimes when I would get close to an object to interact with the game would not register this and in some cases that was a pretty big issue. 7/10

Story: This was one of the best aspects of the game to me. While it starts off in a confusing manor (well, at least like 2 hours in) the plot actually works our really well. There are twists and turns (some of which you WILL see coming) but overall this is probably one of the strongest points of the game. If you like a good survival horror plot this game may be for you. 9/10

Reviewer bias. Survival Horror games a something I love. Second only to my love of RPG's. normally this game would rank with the average of 7.3 but I will round up just for my love of the genre to 8/10.

Shinji Mikami is an overrated name in the industry. This game getting scores like it is, is shocking to me. It's a horrible mess.

Besides the fact that the plot is almost non-existent... in single player story driven game... big issue there... and the fact that the main character and the rest of the cast, are all about as entertaining as watching paint dry... the game is built HORRIBLY.

Controls are completely screwed. The camera is always fighting you. Yes games like this are supposed to be hard, but not hard to control. That's what sets in frustration. Dying won't bother me if it's my fault, but if the game itself isn't letting me do what I want to do, when I want to do it... that will piss me off.

Horror is supposed to be horror, not forced. The game shouldn't have to be out to get me, in order for me to be scared. Alien isolation, that alien scared the crap out of me... Because it was scary. No enemies in this game are scary in the least bit. This game just repeatedly tries to throw items of shock value in your face continually until it shoves you in an extremely tight area after it robs you of your ammunition and other supplies.

How scripted everything is in this game is nauseating. Everything happens when the game wants it to. Never any other time. No thought went into this, it's completely unoriginal. Felt like I was playing a reskinned RE4 the entire time.

Ammo conservation. This annoys the **** out of me. I don't mind when a game is telling me to be careful and save my ammunition. what I do mind, is that when the game decides whether or not my bullets are capable of killing. Several times you will run into enemies, the first thought in your mind is to shoot it. Later on, after you've wasted all of your ammo, you find out that your bullets never would've killed it. No matter how much ammo you had in the first place. Another thing on this subject is critical hits. This does not belong in shooters. Borderlands is fine... weakspots are visible I get it. The problem is, is when the enemy in front of me, a regular joe, I aim for the head to conserve ammo. Surprise it takes five shots in the head to kill this one. The next one only takes two. Seriously?

Don't leave resource management up o chance. Leave it up to player skill. Being careful with things not to run out, not just robbing the player of all hope because.... well... just because.

This is not horror. If you are just another sheep that's in love with all the terrible, cliched, stereotypical same bull**** over and over with Re4, 5, and 6. Then welcome home.

If you want a game that will ACTUALLY be scary, rather than just forcing that horror by making you limp only when it's necessary for something to chase you with a chainsaw... and take all your ammo away... and kill you with bad camera angles... Then stay away.

This is just another case of "Big names are more important than good games."

Also the graphics look really quite dated and the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are frustrating with such a close and clumsy camera view. So this is a cliche game, but it has almost everything, I loved in survival games like: Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill (2-4, Shattered Memories), Resident Evil 4. It has atmosphere and it always changing. Our hero cannot deal with everything, so sometimes he needs to run from enemies or hide. Also story, it's a mess in first episodes and story itself is nothing special. Some things are predictable, but you still need skills, to deal with the problems. You have guns, but ammo are limited.

    And game issues:
    1. Camera. If you played games on PS One, you will get used to it.
    2. Hero. He is damn slow and can run only for 3 seconds (you can upgrade, but it will add 2-3 seconds) and sometimes he just gets stuck in everything.
    3. Some enemies are freaking nightmare, like invisible ones, those sons of **** don't want to die and you can't see them unless you or they hit.
    4. Letterbox. You may get used to them, or absolutely hates them. In my case, I don't care as I don't care about 30 FPS and cross-gen graphics.

In the end, this game for fans, who know how to kill **** and deal with gameplay problems.

Bad news first (let’s get it out the way)

    CAMERA
It’s roughly similar to The Last of Us in how you move the protagonist and look at his surroundings. I say roughly because the camera…and it appears this was a conscious design decision…is clumsy to the point that those moments that do require fast paced gameplay are incredibly frustrating. Faced with a leggy boss who’s touch means instant death….and you’re ffed if you think you can sprint around AND engage him with any level of success. You’ll miss a door and run into the wall, get caught on terrain, you name it. So the trick is to NOT put yourself in those situations. If you can think of using all of your weapons ‘capabilities (explosive crossbow bolts can act as proximity mines when shot into the ground or walls)…or use the tripwires, bear traps and spike filled pits plaguing the maps to your advantage….then you can keep things at a manageable pace. Which you need to do.

    STORY
When I was in college, my girlfriend and future wife – still is so something worked – took me to the Rocky Horror Picture Show on a night where I didn’t tell her I had a fever of 101 because I didn’t want to lose that date. That sense of confusion, WTF and “did that really just happen” ….aided by bronchitis and all the meds that come with it….is exactly the same way I feel playing through this campaign…..and I’m about 4/5s done as I got my copy early. This plot is so flipping disjointed and ….whatever. You really have to experience each chapter as a sort of “one off” story similar to those horror movies made up of 4-5 short stories (like VHS or Creepshow).
    That’s it.

    Pros
    TONE AND GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION
IT IS FREAKY….not in a scary way but in a consistently “oh that’s just wrong” grindhouse/splatter film way..and the grainy, fog layered, dark graphics help maintain that perception. People can **** about the graphics all they want. They’re not BAD. And they’re appropriate. The monsters are sick, death animations (yours and the baddies) are incredibly gory and the whole thing is undeniably, deliciously grim …which is good during the holiday season.

    SOUND
Nicely done. Decent headphones or speakers are a necessity.

    STEALTH
Is a viable tactic. I love stealth and considered gameplay. Most of the time, that's what this is.

    DIFFICULTY
It’s like Dark Souls….except it’s a horror game. If you’re afraid of having to rework certain levels, then don’t apply. But there’s a sense of accomplishment when you’re done.
In summation = good game. Not incredible. But worth your time if you’re a horror fan.

PS ....if you got this far.... ALIEN ISOLATION WAS WAY BETTER…

The game clearly isn't perfect. I have encountered a few frame rate issues but unusually they seem to affect the lower resolutions rather than 1080p, in which I didn't encounter any within the first 4 chapters.

Graphically this isn't anything special when compared to games such as MGS V or The Last Of Us. This is particularly the case with the character models. The lighting effects however are beautifully done and really effect the atmosphere, even if carrying a lit torch or lantern doesn't seem to affect the enemies ability to spot you.

Now for the good. If you want real survival horror your in for a treat. In normal mode weapons and ammo are in short supply. Even head shots will not down the enemies early on so guns blazing is not an option. That's not to say you can't go on the offensive. The levels are littered with a wonderful array of traps. Some which can be dismantled and others, such as manually triggers spikes, which can be used repeatedly to your advantage. Stealth is also an option if you can creep behind an enemy unseen.

The enemies aren't troopers on a patrol though so expect some to turn around randomly and scupper your plans. While some have complained at stupid AI I have personally seen them pull of some clever tactics such as avoiding a trapped entrance, which I'm closely watching, and entering a rear window to take me by surprise.

The game is broken into chapters which take you through many different types of areas. Dilapidated Hospitals, run down villages and muck filled sewers to name a few. All of which are relatively small areas but can feel like a labrynth when exploring and gladly not a map in sight. Each is wonderfully detailed and feels strange enough to give you the feeling that they are not quite what they seem. At the end of each chapter you are taken to a title screen. At first this may seem unwelcome but that feeling will soon change to relief when you are given a well earned break.

Much to my pleasure this game is a rarity in that it doesn't attempt to hold your hand. It won't tell you how to take down a boss but if you actually listen to your characters dialogue, he will give a clue on if you SHOULD stand and fight. There are various puzzles which can result in instant death and unlike other modern games, you are left to figure them out for yourself. They aren't exactly difficult if you have 2 brain cells to rub together but it makes a nice change.

There isn't really much else to say without going into the story but that's just spoiling it. If a run and gun action horror is what you want, stay away! If however you want something slower paced that takes a bit of thought, something reminiscent of old school survival horror... Ignore the low reviews and take a chance. I'm glad I did.

I hear people complained ng about difficulty, or that the game doesn't tell you what to do enough, well what if this happened to you? Just treat the game like it was real, and you'll do better, fight for your life and don't be dumb and run through everything, just take your time and immerse completely into this dark work of art. Also I have to say I normally prefer 1st person games, but I was a resident evil fan on ps1 up until the 4th one, that's right I didn't like 4, but non the less I couldn't resist a new survival horror ip, I love the way this looks feels and plays. So I guess my final words on this game, if you don't like it then maybe you just don't like true survival horror, go play call of duty instead of bringing this game down, and yes I die a lot in the game too, it just reminds me of the days when games didn't hold your hand and baby everybody, I actually have the if they can see you thing turned off, I think that feature brings you out of the experience. Anyway there's my rambling review, I'm already hoping for a sequel and that they have the budget to let the voice actors for the English version do the motion capture too so they can immerse themselves into it more. Yes the game does make you feel tense and that is partly thanks to the environment which is dark bloody and simply gruesome.

Hiding is one big must for your chance of survival hiding as much as you can and as often as you can is recommended. Stealth walking and not making any noises is another must do to survive and walk past enemies without being detected. and of course looking around corners and paying attention to your enemies movement is again a must do every time.

The controls is a bit clunky and feels like it lags at times but again this could simply be my own experience. At first I found the camera annoying but I quickly got used to the camera movement. The graphics is not incredible and it is not terrible the graphics is fine. The Letter boxing effect used in this game is strange and unusual for a video game but it certainly does not effect the game in any way.

The Evil within might not be a game for everyone but it certainly is a good horror game and if you like these type of games then I'm certain you will enjoy the evil within. And if you get frightened very easily then I'm sure this game will make scare you.

I for one enjoy this game and think it is a good entry into the horror genre is it a game of the year contender I'm not sure on this one but it is certainly one of the best games of 2014.

Is the Evil Within a good game, or does it perhaps have more evil within it self than the actual story? The truth is, that for an old school gamer like my self that to this day still plays the original Resident Evil games, this game strikes home more than it misses. Is it perfect? Hell no, in fact it had quite a few problems ranging from pop in textures, slow down when you are running through rooms, and some other odd little moments that ended up getting me killed. Is it a horrible game though held back by its dated approach to design? Hell no again.

While it may have room for improvement, it rarely ever leaves you with a bad taste. Dying is a part of Evil Within. If you are a gamer that is seeking a game experience where your death is at the bottom of the bucket list, than this is not for you. Dying is a lesson, dying is an evolution in this game. It aims to improve you, sharpen your mind, and push you further with a firm hand.

While the scares of the game were not my type, (Gore, blood, and twisted character designs fail to ever get even the slightest shiver in me, then again I'm hugely bleached when it comes to horror games now anyway) it still had some fantastic designs for levels and enemies. I felt it had more of a mixture between Resident Evil 4 and Demon Souls, than lets say Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The moans and groans of enemies in hall ways made me feel like i was right next door to Demon Souls, or Dark Souls.

The Deaths I experienced, felt like they were my fault, just like in the Souls games as well.

Would I play this game again? Darn Tootin. In fact, this and Alien: Isolation has made me, a horror genre enthusiast, quite happy. I now have hours and hours of game play between these two gems of a game. If they are too hard, and you prefer feeling unstoppable in video games, than please move on to something else.

I do not want anyone getting upset at this game, when it clearly was never advertised as an action game, and I also do not want any ones weekend to be spoiled by something they really don't want!

People are desperate for survival horror and will likely accept any release vaguely resembling their desire. The Evil Within was marketed as a return to 'pure horror' and it is closer to a grotesque, senseless misadventure into a variety of misplaced sequences which do not establish any consistent atmosphere for an emotion of dread to develop.

Shinji is not the saviour of survival horror, he is a figurehead, demonstrating a competent team and ample resources are stronger to a single man's masterminded vision in the current case (in the assumption they had one). Notes to add ambience are nonsensical, ammunition is balanced punisghinly to cause unreasonable circumstance, deaths are regularly cheap and chapters typically requiring routines of trial-error-trial-error-trial.

There is a fundamental design confusion: "Should we aim for stealth or aciton?" Consequently, as the creators attempted an amalgamation, they have created a situation whereby stealth is often inappropriate considering action setpieces whilst action is mostly discouraged from contrived survival horror elementsboth from the cumbersome controls to the scarce resources. The lack of instructions, too, are not a fun challenge or an endeavour to exhibit how 'hardcore' a player is - they're a lazy scenario which has the player testing for answers through frustrating mechanics invariably leading to mistakes: repetitive stealth, unbalanced enemies, cumbersome action.

Enemies are not designed to investigate intelligently for any fair calculations to the player - line of sights erratic when not distracted with a redundant throw of a distraction - and patience of the stealth declines into frustration whilst there's neither dread or variety to sneaking. Additionally, environments are inappropriate for stealth, regularly a victim to poor collisions which affect fluid manoeuvring, and they're highly restrictive to have stealth as practically identical to how simply isolated the practice is of waiting inside a locker.

The Evil Within is a game we want to be success, inspiring excellent survival horror games in the future and also being one, but it is nevertheless a disaster to not only ambition, it's flawed from a design perspective.

Technical issues range from clipping, textures requiring additional time to load and horrible artificial intelligence for mechanics dependent on these. However, to not be wholly negative, positives include adequate graphics, occasionally entertaining environments and fascinating bosses.

The framerate inexcusably lowers at times, unacceptable considering it's substandard the standards of PS4 graphics - entailing it should be easier to code smoother - and movement is restricted to a degree that does not increase tension or 'horror', it's an unnecessary restriction: contrived limitations, highly awkward in practice, to supposedly induce 'fear' with their superficial assumptions on survival horror design principles. The aforementioned misunderstanding, too, is witnessed with difficulty as instilling the fear of death rooted into survival, attempting to replicate Dark Souls which punishes players methodically as consequence opposed to irrational punishment as with The Evil Within or any other poorly balanced product.

You will die until numb. You will die senselessly and scream 'unfair', not 'OH MY GOD'. You will laugh at the repetitive gore that it indulges in as weak attempt at visceral horror. You will be amused at the schizophrenic direction that's embodied well with the disjointed, non-sequitur realities. You will laugh as they try to be cheesy for us to ignore specific flaws.

The worst element has been the manipulative marketing of the companies involved, hyping survival horror fanabases into a protective frenzy over 'Shinji',, provoking loyalty as they view the success as important for their favourite franchises being restored/returned/ressurected and having people believe it will be an infallible success whilst lacking any of the relevant ingredients.. It is not survival horror, it is a third-person shooter which has been superfluously replicated survival horror elements, trying to not betray their initial intent to attracted fans, that serve as incompatible to all of their other choices.

Where is the focus and the decisive, harmonious experience? Not The Evil Within. Where is true survival horror? Maybe Fatal Frame V will have to do and I hope it never, ever attempts the current trend in survival horror, horribly simplistic: hide-and-seek.

I can run long as Sebastian with how much I enjoyed The Evil WIthin and regard it as 'horror'. It mocked any idea of survival and twisted the idea into an empty one of mindless deaths: no suspense or theatrics, purely sadist.

No game deserves a 0 or 1, if it does, then it's because it's truly unfinished and unplayable. The Evil Within is neither of those things. This game is a true return to classic horror.

The only thing keeping me from giving this game a 10 is the voice acting and story are kind of lackluster. The story itself is cool, but the way it's told isn't. The voice acting is a little off when it comes to emotions and delivery.

Gameplay wise this is what RE5 and RE6 should of been. The difficulty is not that tough either, even on survival. It's kinda funny when people complain that the game is too tough, but Dark Souls is even harder and gets rave reviews. The enemies in this game have patterns and for most of them you don't need ammo, and if you do it's laid out in the environment for you to find.

I don't normally write reviews for games, but will if I find that people are being unfair towards a game just to follow the trend.

If you like Resident Evil, Dead Space, or even Silent Hill you will most likely like this game.
