Honestly, I don't get why a lot of people soured on this game. First off, if you're expecting to play an updated version of Resident Evil 4, then yeah you're going to be really disappointed. The boss are truly difficult and the first two DLCs do a great job of expanding the main story, providing insight into Juli Kidman. If there was something to complain about it would be the lack of ammo for the rocket launcher you unlock after finishing the game. Why isn't there an option for infinite rockets or maybe infinite ammo? Otherwise this was a compelling game to play and some of the puzzles were a little challenging. If you like playing games with a challenge like Bloodborne, then this game is right up your alley! Enjoy and be tortured lol! Expand

The problem most gamers have with The Evil Within is that its basically RE4 repurposed. It maybe a legitimate criticism. It doesn't mean the game can't be enjoyable. It maybe a legitimate criticism. It doesn't mean the game can't be enjoyable. Lets be honest, Black Sheep was Tommy Boy II and that did not make it any less enjoyable a movie to watch. The Evil Within is a Horror/Survival game, its intent was to create a creepy atmosphere, scare the player at times and build in a few plot twists. It largely succeeds at all these things while being challenging and enjoyable. Its a good, not great game.

The Evil Within is succeeds greatly in creating a dark, twisted, evil, frightening environment. As Sebastian navigates the game he is always placed in a setting that feels right for a horror movie. Everything seems dark and seems just a bit off. The detail works. The player is almost never in a room in the game where he would not feel jittery or scared in real life. The game does a good job of creating accurate setting, even if some parts are direct ripoffs from RE4.

The game also succeeds at creating a resource poor environment. No movie clips here. When this game is completed Sebastian will not have a GTA5 style armory of weapons and ammunition. When I played through this game I very nearly did not have enough ammo to get through the final boss fights. I was desperately searching for ammo, crafting agony bolts and conserving every single bullet I had. In one fight I had only one bullet to spare. The Evil Within is not a hack and slash or a button masher. The gamer will have to think his or her way through almost all combat scenes. Ammunition and resources must be conserved. The does a great job of making the gamer ration resources.

The Evil Within is challenging, maybe more challenging than any game I played in some time. The boss battles, all of them, all tough. When fighting the Spider boss the gamer may need to turn the game off for a while to calm down and come back to it. Its not clear if this a strength of the game or a weakness. Everyone wants a challenging game. The Evil Within can be challenging to the point of frustration and discouragement. I personally know one gamer who 2 chapters in determined the game was absurdly difficult and not worth the frustration of playing through. Whether this is a strength or weakness of The Evil Within is up to the gamer. If you don't like very difficult games and resource poor characters this is not the game for you.

Common complaints against the game are that the story has major plot holes, the main character is a non entity and character development is terrible. All are legitimate. Sebastian is a hollow character who lacks dimension. The elements of his back story that become known completely fail to impact the actions he takes. Worse, the back story fails to make the player identify with Seb. The same can be said of the Seb's sidekicks.

The criticism that the game lacks character development and that Sebastian is a hollow, undeveloped character should be tempered by the fact that The Evil Within is about setting and mood, not character. Setting and mood is developed and done so well. Take it for what is. This is a video game and not a movie. Not every game will be The Last of Us in terms of story or voice acting. The game still succeeds at what it needs to at basic levels to be fun.

The plot of The Evil Within is much maligned by gamers. No pulled punches here - it makes no sense. Critical aspects of the story are never explained. At the end of the game you are unsure where Sebastian really is. Side character Kidman is acting out a completely separate mission and has a completely different perspective to the story that no one else sees and is not revealed until the purchase of two DLC games. The story falls short. At no point did I feel I fully grasped what was going on. I got bits and pieces, filled in some holes, but I never felt confident I understand the whole story the game attempts to tell. If you are a gamer who needs the game to have an excellent story this game is not for you.

The Evil Within is a good but not great game. It gets a 7/10. It succeeds in being a horror/survival game and in challenging the gamer to outthink enemies while marshaling resources. Its very challenging. It fails graphically (the game does not really appear "next gen" or that much better than late release PS3 games. I expected more) and the story is overly convoluted and non sensical at times. The voice acting is average. What the game does well though it does very well, namely create setting and mood and make the player feel they are in a horror movie.

If you can play this game for what it is - a horror/survival game meant to be a creepy and tough to survive - its enjoyable and worth the full purchase price. If you can't enjoy an overly challenging game or you need a good story and great voice acting this game is not for you even at a reduced price. Lastly, if you can't get over it being a repurposing of RE4 - its not for you

Great game that will have you Sh*ting your pants at some parts. The storyline is fantastic and very unique. I did find however, that this game is more fun to watch than to actually play. The movement can be a bit clunky and I know that was intended. A must buy for fans of Resident Evil 4! Review score would be higher, but the movement and controls at time bothered me.

Has a horrible frame rate, but get past that and it's a survival horror gem. Truly terrifying with immense atmosphere that grips you and gives you chills. Fun exploration and some open level design mixed with linear progression. It's a 'Down The Rabbit Hole' psychological story with intense gore, mystery and horrific monsters. Atmosphere is A+. Technical improvements are needed in future games.

The game had many areas that made me feel uneasy. This game is difficult - I'm playing on the easy difficulty and am almost finished the game but must have already died over 50 times. There are sequences where you solve puzzles while in combat which is very harrowing - way better than slowly moving blocks to reach a key. Some of the bosses are frightening and to get through them I have to keep mentally telling myself that I'm solving a puzzle and not running from something that is going to rip off my head.

I also am a horror fan generally and while the game borrows from usually unrelated horror tropes, I'm still enjoying the experience. Zombies, Texas Chainsaws, Pyramid Heads, Japanese Horror, Experimentations gone wrong, altered realities - these are all present.

As far as story and atmosphere I would put this right under Silent Hill but still a great effort.

The game tries to be Resident Evil 4. That's great, if you liked RE4. If you didn't (like me) then push this game to one side. The atmosphere is spooky and the monsters are genuinely scary when you first come accross them, but that doesn't fix the problems with the experience. The game is very action orientated and it's difficulty comes when you cannot control your character (Sebastian) properly. He's a clunky wreck and gets in the way of the camera when you need to see most. Disarming traps for parts can easily have you killed if you're not quick enough to disarm them during the disarming mini-game.

With the number of positive reviews this game has received, I'm sure many will find it an excellent title to play. But if you're hoping for something different and more original from what the Resident Evil series has become, then stay well away from The Evil Within.

The Evil Within was a Roller Coaster of a game for me. Initially, I was really uninspired by it. The first few hours were spent getting used to the game's unusually dark settings (literally dark, not thematically). After the first main box, the game really started to grow into its own and show its true colors.

Survival horror at its core, it reminded my a lot of the original Dead Space.

After the first main box, the game really started to grow into its own and show its true colors.

Survival horror at its core, it reminded my a lot of the original Dead Space. The feeling of helplessness is nearly tangible. After a few attempts at running blindly to get from point A to point B, and quickly learning that was a very bad idea, the game become much more about stealth and cunning rather than brute force. A few of the mechanisms are lost as the game progresses. Hiding from your enemies, while effective, seemed to become a less common practice about halfway through.

The world the game is set in is the main focus. The protagonist himself is undeniable forgettable. His storyline is revealed through little journal entries preceding save points as the game progresses, making it even more forgettable for those who refuse to read for story depth.

There are a few mechanical flaws that carry over due to the console base. Framerate drops, while not common, are expected. There are two black bars along the top and bottom of the screens to simulate a wider scope of view. While these were not game-breakers for me, many people were extremely agitated by their presence.

Despite its flaws, I was drawn into the world. The game is not overly long, but the atmosphere is infectious! For any survival horror fan, this is a must play. Same goes for horror/gore nuts. For those just looking for the next game, would not recommend picking it up without playtesting first.

Game is perfect combination of Stealth, Shooting and Strategy. There is wide variety of weapons that you can enjoy using throughout the game but sometimes you have to prefer stealth to save ammunition. Shooting requires strategic approach to progress game without getting out of resources. Game is scary and does not rely on jump scares. Upgrading stuff, scavenging this all combined delivers one of the best survival horror experience.

This game is little difficult for a casual gamer even at the casual difficulty, some like me who like to take challenges would love the game being difficult then usual games but my brother who never played a game after resident evil 4, found it very frustrating even at casual difficulty so I feel like there should have been an even easier difficulty. Also there are alot of trophies which are impossible to achieve for a casual gamer. The game has extra-ordinary violence but again some would have liked this game because of this.

Talking about the story, I would just say this is not the best aspect of this game. Graphics are good but I'm still waiting for a game that defines 4th generation graphics

The length of the game is also a plus. I completed it in 15 or 16 hours on 'survival'. There are plenty of cutscenes, and well made environments, all levels are very different and distinct, its never gonna be like you think it feels familiar, not a single time. I am surprised that they managed to make all the ugly, old, creepy, dark environments with so much character.

The horror element, yes there were few creepy and scary moments, but just at the beginning, then it's basically gritty and unpleasant feeling throughout the game.

The combat is what I dont like too much. First in the game where there aren't that many bullets, the meele attacts are extremely inefective, even though guys uses knife for stealth kills, he doesn't use it combat. It might around 20 hits to kill a lowest enemy. Sure you can get a axe or a torch and get a instakill, but only once. However the burning of the downed enemies or oil puddles are quite cool, but it's not 100% reliable, what I mean that if you burn a corpse or downed enemy, not always or not every enemy that is at required distance, will burn also. But i guess it has point as nothing in the game is reliable, just like headshots, which is weird as hell, as you always are used in all the shooting games that headshot is a kill - not necessarily in the evil within. So for these things game loses 1 point.

While the story might not be the best, but the way you see it unfold is really nice. I won't be telling how, because it would be quite a spoiler.

Graphics? I'm never too fussed about it too much, I'm more into imersion most of the time, I did really enjoyed the textures and details on all the walls etc.

I do reccomend the game for people who are dissapointed with grecent games as I am. So this was quite fresh breath of air.

    8.5 and reccomend

Survival horror at it's finest. If you ever griped about Resident Evil losing it's roots by becoming an action shooter, this game is for you. Great fun that doesn't sell out to the lowest common denominator like most modern games do.

At my age, I like to relax after work, that's about it. I just finished the game after 22 hours of gameplay on survival mode and died 107 times. The way how you die in this game is so repetitive that I pretty much yawned all the way through. Constantly running out of ammo, nothing makes sense (jumping from one scene to the other) - half way through I kinda felt like the developers were Japanese (didn't know they were initially as into shows Bethesda to be the main developer *big Fallout Fan here*) - why am I saying this? Because only Japanese would be sadomasochist enough to endure so many deaths. It comes to a point that I stopped enjoying it but since I'm addicted to collect trophies I pushed myself to finish the game. Usually I like playing games on hard mode. With Evil Within, so many times I was tempted to decrease the difficulty down to casual level.

Honestly, if you are in my situation and game to relax, have a good time then this game is not for you. I recently finished Shadow of Mordor - Now that was really cool :D - and switching to this game right after felt clumsy, slow paced, heavy and dragging the story.

God how I used to love Silent Hill back in the good old days - this game tries to reconciliate too many genres. It tries to be The Last of Us, tries to be Resident Evil, tries to be Silent Hill.

Now that I have finished the game. I have unlocked the RPG and machine gun. I ll play a little to get as many trophies as possible. But I will NOT replay under AKUMA or Nightmare mode.

I would definitely not recommend this game at all.

After leaving past projects behind, Shinji Mikami creates his own team and strives to make another great installment in the survival horror genre, and what we get is a good but flawed experience that doesn't live up to the expectations many fans had. However, that doesn't mean that the Evil Within is not an enjoyable experience.

The Evil Within stars Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his colleagues, Joseph and Kidman, who arrive on the scene of a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. Very quickly, everything goes to hell and Seb is forced to survive in a new twisted reality. Ultimately, the story is the weakest part of this whole game, by far. Seb’s bland reactions, lack of common sense and weak responses hardly do anything to make the story compelling, and while the voice acting is good across the board, dialogue is not. Seb is transported from area to area and he brushes it off without a second thought. Events happen where people try to kill each other, causing mistrust and drama, only for said events to be completely forgotten the next time these characters meet. There’s not even any semblance of plot until the game’s ninth chapter, but at that point, the story becomes so complicated just for the sake of being complicated, only for you to reach the end with so many questions unanswered. The subplot that builds up concerning Seb’s family ultimately builds up to nothing, and the story ultimately doesn't make much sense by the end.

Overall, the story is a complete fail, so it’s up to the rest of the game to hold it up, and it succeeds in that regard. Inventory management in a world with limited resources is key to surviving, and it’s up to you to be smart and tactical to get through the journey, relying more on stealth and conserving ammo rather than go guns blazing. It’s a sure fire way to get killed. Aside from this, there’s also some light crafting and even an upgrade system, allowing you to upgrade your health, sprint, and even your firearms.

The combat is a mixed bag. As fun as it is, it’s no secret that the aiming isn't very good. It zooms in too close and feels stiff, and the crosshair doesn't accurately represent a bullet’s trajectory. It can make scoring a headshot more difficult than it should be, especially with the pistol. Luckily, there’s a good variety of weapons; shotguns, sniper rifles, and my favorite, the crossbow, which has multiple types of bolts, letting you freeze enemies, set them on fire, and even electrocute them. The crossbow is that weapon you’ll rely on when you're cornered and need an out.

Another new mechanic is using matches to burn bodies, instantly killing prone enemies and possibly burning adjacent enemies as well. It’s always satisfying to burn a body just as an enemy runs at you, but it’s also just as frustrating when it fails to work. Although fun, the inconsistency with the matches actually working makes it a fun, useful, but ultimately an unreliable mechanic at best.

The game’s number one strength is the vast amount of different level designs. Along with the sections that are centered on horror, there are plenty of small puzzles, action sections, and even a few stealth sections. The vast and varied amount of levels are impressive, and I often marveled at the different obstacles and boss fights the game threw at me. There are a few cheap bosses here and there, but for the most part, they're fun.

There are a few small complaints like the bad AI for your partner Joseph, but the game’s worst sin is easily when an enemy attacks you. Never have I found a game that actually immobilizes you just to watch an enemy hit you with their weapon. It’s completely asinine because it prevents you from defending yourself and opens you up to all enemy attacks around you. It’s easily the most frustrating mechanic of the game, by far.

Nowhere are the game’s flaws more prominent than in Nightmare mode. Essentially hard mode, all the mechanics and flaws in the game’s design become even more noticeable, constantly hitting you with cheap, unfair shots. The epic boss fight against Laura becomes a frustrating bullet sponge that one shots you and the game spams bear traps during the action sequences which is the absolute worst decision because you can’t keep an eye on bear traps and your enemies at the same time. A true testament to the difficulty is the game’s death counter. On my first playthrough on Normal I died 17 times, but on my first run on Nightmare, I died a record 64, not including the deaths that caused me to quit out of frustration.

Despite the game’s many frustrations, the Evil Within is a game I look back at fondly, with memories of the boss fights and many of the awesome level designs I loved to play through. If you’re expecting a terrifying scare fest, the lack of horror sections might turn you off, but the game is ultimately a good survival horror game. Just don’t play on Nightmare, or your experience might be ruined.

Not a must have game but it´s solid. The Resident Evil 4 fans (like me) is always present and that is very good because RE4 is one of my favorite games all time. The Evil Within is not brilliant as it spiritual predecessor was but i really enjoyed this game.

The game play is smooth and while targeting and actually killing things can become frustrating, it actually adds to the beauty of it. I found myself dying about twenty times in the opening scene trying to attack the lurcher in the room, and its this guess work and desire to complete that makes you want to get that little further.

The story will fry your brain a little, but the world and themes are pretty cool. I don't understand how anyone can rate this game as a 0 or 1 ... it's not the best game I've ever played, but for £25 it was a bargain really, and I'd suggest any horror game fan to give it a whirl as they wont be disappointed.

The atmosphere for the game is overall creepy and it does not rely on jump scares to scare you. The only two issues I had with this game was it's melee usage and it's stamina. Overall, the game relies on guns to do the killing. You will come across the occasional axe or whatever but can only use it once before it vanishes. You can use your fists but good luck with that. You can upgrade the stamina like anything else on the game BUT when you do run out of stamina, the game actually makes your character STOP to catch a breathe. Instead of just slowing down (like in GTA games) you actually stop. And yes, even when enemies are right up on you. This has actually gotten me killed once or twice. However, those small pet peeves are not good reasons to not fully enjoy this game. Overall, it is fantastic and way worth the try! I love it! Expand

Dark, dank, and disgusting yes but beautiful as a horror game should look. The textures, resolution, and frame rate (at least during game play) are all great on the PS4 version at least the PS3 version has some frame rate dips now and again. Now I will say that the cut scenes at least on the PS4 and PS3 versions of the game have issues, from popping in textures to the occasional stutter. That aside like I said the game looks and runs great and the visuals along with the sound design definitely made me pretty tense during some parts of the game.

Story/Characters: Yeahhhhhh this is where the game kinda falls short. The story is not really bad but is pretty cliched and the pacing is really all over the place but I will say that I did want to see where everything was going so I have to at least give it that. The characters I have to be honest did almost nothing for me, I did kind of like Sebastian because of his almost not giving a crap attitude throughout most of the game and the dynamic between him and Joseph when it was allowed to be explored (which doesn't happen often) was kind of charming but besides that I just didn't care about what happened to any of them.

Game Play: This is honestly kind of a mixed bag, I know this has been said before but think Resident Evil 4 meets Silent Hill and you'll be on the right track. The game is mostly a lot of shooting because melee combat is pretty much useless and the gun play is really fun and tense. You will find yourself looking around a lot for ammo and health items which in some parts of the game can be pretty scarce leading to some panicked moments especially against bosses. You can also find what I called Brain Juice throughout the game which can be used to upgrade yourself and your weapons in the save area. There are some things that got on my nerves like some kind of cheap invisible enemies and some segments that felt a bit to much like action shooter set pieces which would be fine if ammo was more plentiful but over all the game play is very solid.

Verdict: While the game isn't everything I hoped and it does fall seriously short in some areas, the things that really matter in a horror game such as atmosphere and solid game play are a really good return to form for Survival Horror from the guy who revolutionized it in the first place Shinji Mikami and its great to see him return to what he does best with one of the best games in this genre I have played in a long time.

To start, the black bars destroy the experience, I spent the first hour trying to figure out how to turn them off. Finally after going online I realised they couldn't be removed. They take you out of the experience and block your view. Very bad if playing on a smaller TV which I often do if the wife kicks me out on the front room to play upstairs!

The graphics are good but are spoilt by the restricted view, which is unnecessary, if The Last Of Us can look great in full screen running at a higher frame rate then there is no excuse for the ridiculous black bars!

The controls are sluggish and a step back, most areas are very dark and too hard to see any of the 'action'.

The game cannot decide if it is a SH or an action game. On one hand you have no ammo or weapons and are forced to use stealth but stealth doesn't work and often you are forced to confront enimies with nothing to fight with. At these points when surrounded I just put the pad down and waited for the character to die as there is no way to escape. To me this is bad game design.

The story is bland and uninspiring. The first level is fun, the rest are like a very poor Resident Evil 4 clone lacking all the thrills, set pieces and story which made Re4 so great.

I had no reason to complete the game and I will not be returning to it. If you like SH games stick check out Alien Isolation and Outlast on PS4 instead of this unfinished nearly broken game.

After the boring first chapter the feel of the game kicks in and I love the quality of horror it brings. The unexpecting sounds of the game send quivers through my soul and yes, it does feel like a long sought after
sequel to RE4. I say this only completing chapter 6. Yes the main characters have no charisma and the story is whack, but I love the save set up and the way the creepiness surprises with little stale moments. I like the old school feel and would probably really rate this game 8.7. This game should have got a bigger push in advertisement and overall, it seems, some reviewers (critics and users) may have not given the game enough play to really enjoy.

    Positive Things:
+ Survival Horror atmosphere (in most of the game).
+ Story is interesting and leaves a window for a sequel (good chance to make something better).
+ Interesting enemies (for me it is a plus to get enemies which are not predictable, you never know if you need to run or to fight).

    Negative Things:
    - Characters development / dialogues are poor.
    - Graphics / frame rate is not next gen quality.
    - Camera is not friendly (in addition to the freaking black bars).

After playing few chapters, you will probably get used to the game's aspect ratio. If you don't like it, you can always change your tv-settings to fix the aspect ratio so, that you wont see any black bars. Or at least I could do that with my 3 years old Philips TV, but I still played the game from start to the end, with black bars on the top & bottom of the screen.

I also was scared by the comments of other players, that the controls are terrible, but gladly those comments proved wrong. During my 14 hours long campaign, I died 36 times, and none of them were result of controls, but rather by my own mistakes & carelessness.

The way the story is told, may be confusing, and feel little bit weak/strange. Characters are also flat. But if you don't focus too much at the story, you will still enjoy the ride that Evil Within delivers. Also the strange story gives the game a little bit freedom to have more variety with interesting and cool art/level design.

Graphics aren't that amazing, but worked very well for me, and looked sharp at 1080p resolution. Only downside is that without updating the game data with patches, game will be laggy.

Evil Within keeps you at your toes almost all the time, when ammo & suplies are scare, and you can't really never be sure about what waiting at you behind next corner. You have a lot of choices on how to upgrade your character, and many different enemy types with different tactics, and dangerous traps hidden in your surroundings, and nice rewards for those who care to explore every corner of the stage. Also at some points at the game you will also have more action packed chapters, but hard-core horror fans may be dissapointed by these gameplay sections.

Overall its a great game, if you don't set your hopes too high, and if you don't mind the strange story.

Great game. It is kind of difficult and frustrating sometimes but that s the way it should be when playing a horror survival game. What I like most is the atmosphere and the simple story. Half the time its really fun and I'm waiting for it to get better... but then it doesn't. So I'm not really on board with making this in a top ten oor even top twenty list. This game could be amazing but it just misses the mark on way too many levels, too many areas that need a polish. For example as a casual gamer I find that it does not teach you the world very well. i was up to chapter four before i realized there were keys to collect. I dont think the tutorials are very clear throughout. If you power up your character or your weapons it seems to offer small changes in such minuscule increments that it hardly seems worth your time unless you know whats coming. The time it takes to actually upgrade your character's abilities or weapons is way too long too. for example, if I need to find a broken mirror to upgrade I shouldn't also have to walk down a long hallway and sit in a chair and then go through a long complicated menu. why make me do that when it adds nothing to the game. here is a suggestion: My character finds a broken mirror and is immediately in a power-up chair and the menu is simple and easy to follow with clear obvious logic and the upgrades are larger upgrades. The same problem goes toward the other bonus things in the locker or the map pieces in the map room. why do i need to walk around these long twisted halls and through these doors just to access these things.its irritating and kills the momentum of the game. Also, some of the story seems a little crazy and disconnected as well. I'm not sure why I have to battle a long haired bloody monster after i already killed the long haired bloody monster 3 chapters ago.. (out of monsters? recycling?). also the controls are frustrating. I understand that its supposed to have tension and be a bit challenging at times but if I understand a foe and a battle and I make choices that should work then my character on screen should survive. half the time it feels like i'm dying because of a glitch from the controls (like picking up an object which doesn't happen unless i am faced exactly in the right position of the object, or sneaking up on an enemy and the sneak attack option doesn't activate periodically in the same scenario, or I try to use a match ad it doesn't activate ). also it seems the logic of my character in aiming or preparing doesn't suit the heighten story and horror. at some point if anything like this was really happening my character should already have his gun out and aiming. but I find i have to reload, re aim and re build my character into being prepared for every scene even after i repeat the same challenge. shouldn't the logic be built into the game that this guys has seen some terrible things and knows he needs to be ready for some of it? its like the character is a child with no memory of the last horrific thing that just happened. (btw do i really need to upgrade space to hold matches? shouldn't they be small enough to carry a box of a thousand?) So the story and the dialogue really don't connect to the experiences that the gamer is having as his character goes through the story. For example: why does he have a lantern that gives off this terrible impractical light, shouldn't he have found a flashlight by now? why is he still wearing his vest and tie through the whole story? there are so many annoying illogical choices from the dialogue, story, game play, upgrading weapons and abilities, character arc, that this game is just a C plus or B minus at best. As I first noted though its not entirely terrible, there's a lot of great art direction and some interesting puzzles and some intriguing and scary story elements. It just feels like its half baked. It needed a few more story revisions and some streamlined game play revisions. The hiding in cabinets aspect is really useless too. After the novelty of the first scene i don't think i used it ever again. I find myself frustrated and dissatisfied with this game and I'm tempted to put it down before i completely finish. It doesn't seem worth the time as the enjoyment is sporadic and fleeting. I would say get this game used or at a heavy discount if its your favorite genre and there is nothing else out there for you to play otherwise its more fun playing a fifth round of The Last of Us or Tomb Raider. Sadly, we don’t see a lot of good horror games coming out these days; however, after hearing that creator of the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4 Shiniji Mikami was behind The Evil Within, it instantly became one of my highly anticipated games.

The Evil Within is a 3rd person survival horror video game. Our hero protagonist detective Sebastian Castellanos along with his partners receives a call to investigate a mass murder at a mental hospital. He is shocked at the horrific bloody scene but is then knocked out by a mysterious person who appears from behind him and drags him into another unknown world. Sebastian wakes up and finds himself hung upside down.

The introduction is strong as you are quickly immersed in an Evil atmosphere. Your first encounter is with a disfigured butcher who will stop at nothing to kill you. It is a psychological horror and your main goal is to escape from this nightmare.

The world of The Evil Within is dark with rich environments that are detailed and varied from mansions to deserted farms. Graphics in general don’t use the next gens full potential and I did notice some frame rate drops during my gameplay. The sounds are creepy and done well giving you the feeling that you are never alone. Light effects are immersive especially when Sebastian is carrying the Lantern which creates a truly eerie experience.

The creatures are varied and encounters with them are tense. One type of creature worth noting is the invisible kind because you can only know where they are, from moving objects. Focusing in the game is important because the environment is filled with traps and deadly dangers. Thankfully, you will have a lot of options to approach each fight.

Ammo is scarce so you will have to rely on the environment to use to your advantage by luring the creatures into traps. Playing stealthy and sneaking behind an enemy for an instant kill will save you a lot of precious bullets and burning their bodies by using matches will insure that they don’t get back up. There are various weapons that can be found from a sniper, to a powerful shotgun and grenades; however, my favorite weapon was the agony crossbow that has different bolts such as the explosive bolts which is useful for large groups of enemies, freeze bolts that can freeze enemies for a short period of time and flash bolts that blinds them for a while. Bolts can be crafted from trap parts or found in the environment.

The overall stealth mechanics could have been better, you are able to hide in closets and under the bed but I found myself rarely using them. You can run and if you reach your limit Sebastian will just stop running to catch his breath instead of slowing down. This was a nice touch as it added tension especially if a monster was chasing you.

There is an eye on top of the screen that lets you know if enemies see you, but I faced cases where they would see me before the eye opening. There are auto saves and manual saves. In the manual saves, you will come across save mirrors which transport you back to your asylum room for a few minutes of relief to save your game; however, it also doesn’t feel very safe with dark rooms everywhere and a creepy nurse walking around. I didn’t find the auto saves well balanced and since you will die so many times during the game, repeating some set pieces all over again is frustrating. In your Asylum room, you will also be able to upgrade your abilities such as health, ammo capacity and weapon power. This is done by collecting green liquid on corpses and jars scattered throughout the environment that gains you points that will be used to upgrade.
Choosing wisely on what skill to focus on is key because the green liquid isn’t very common to find.

The well designed bosses in the game are tough and unique. Little clues are provided so you will have to find out your own strategy by using the environment to take out the bosses. This will lead to a lot of trial and error as it will take some time to figure out how to kill them.

There are 15 total chapters which will take you around 19 hours to complete. The pace of the game is made well and I did not feel any repetitive gameplay during the main campaign because of the many different set pieces that it throws at you. Sadly, the overall story is weak and forgettable. Nothing seems to be clear right from the beginning. Main character Sebastian is a very dry character that you won’t relate too and little is known about the remaining cast as well which leaves little reason to care about any of them.

The Evil Within could have been a great game if it weren’t for the boring story and uninteresting characters. It is a challenging game even on casual mode and horror fans will enjoy the fun ride because it brings back memories from Resident Evil 4.

That said, I felt some of the game had a little too much trial and error in spots, but I still felt the game actually forced me to survive, utilizing literally every item in my inventory (something that most games don't do, whereas in other action games, you can kind of just pick a weapon the whole game and stick with it, not likely in this game) to beat bosses and enemies, which I found thrilling.

There were some Dark Souls-esque highs in this game when I literally used my last bullet/arrow/grenade to kill what I though would be an impossible fight. I always felt the game game me just enough to beat what was ahead, but not giving me enough to where I felt godly.

The restricted camera view (aka the super black bars) never bothered me, as I understood that the less you see in a game, the more uncomfortable the player is, and I felt that was a great tactic, forcing me to be aware of my surroundings and actually having to utilize the sound in the game as a tool to figure out what was around the corner or coming at me.

The story is very weak, weird and obscure, with some typical Japanese anime nonsense in there. It makes "sense" to a degree, but I feel it was the weakest part of the game, along with the terrible voice acting.

But, I still had a thoroughly enjoyable time with the game, and couldn't recommend it enough to true survival horror (emphasis on survival) or stealth fans.

This game is broken, hard, glitchy, horrible and has a horrible ending.
Finally finished it today glad it's over with.
So the main character is pretty funny he would rather be picking up bottles than climbing out of the monster infested water and impending death. You will see things like this more and more the more you play. Like hung up bodies that you waste matches on that don't

Like hung up bodies that you waste matches on that don't burn. There's more than this though.

The controls switch to type C mediately, prevents the constant incursion of the menu during battle. There is also a one second latency so don't just mash melee as after two melees the enemy automatically counter attacks.

P.S. EVERYONE who gave this a user score of ten is INSANE.

There are some frame rate issues and I'm not talking about when they are pulsing the screen to build drama.

I liked the game early on and welcomed the challenge, that is what this game is a challenge. The hunting for parts and ammo is great a real survival horror game, but that's about where it ends.

Buy this if you loved RE6 and other glitchy poorly storylined horror games.

Didn't like this game. It started out okay and then just got frustrating. As the monsters got difficult you had to deal with a behemoth that you couldn't really kill. On top of that you can't really do anything in this game, so I sold it back to Gamestop and stuck with Destiny.

    - Overly difficult in all the wrong ways. ---> I like a challenge, but after the 18th time getting slaughtered by a knockoff chainsaw guy or even "accidentally" by some dime-a-dozen, wandering like a lost dog zombie guy and forced, beginning of the level restarts (think megaman 1 minus a method to the madness) pretty much forced me to reconsider buying games without trying them before I buy, like ever again.

    - And on, and on, and on.

    --------------------------------------------------

Reserved a copy and got the "fighting chance pack".
More like, the "something to blow your nose with pack" cause wow, an extra shotgun with 4 rounds, extra couple of viles of green liquid and whatever else, little thingies that basically become useless after you piss them away trying to figure out just what the hell you're supposed to be doing.

Don't get me wrong, I really, really wanted and really, really tried to like this game.
BUT, it became very aparent after day after day trials and errors, that this was just not a well thought out game, nor worth sticking around for to find out if it actually did get any better after level 3 or 4...

    Waste of valuable resources.
The graphics could have been something great, but felt (and looked) like a sub-par, last gen, bargain-bin title.
Bethesda should be ashamed of themselves.

The Evil Within is a survival horror brought to you by Shinji Mikami, the same man who brought the survival horror to a brighter light through his work on Resident Evil. In the Evil Within you play as Sebastian Castellanos, a detective whom is called to the scene of a crime at Beacon Mental hospital, by his side is his fellow officers Juli Kidman and Joseph Oda. Once at the hospital, an assailant (Ruvic) is seen killing police, which then turns his attention to Castellanos. From here Castellanos must piece together what has been happening and ultimately find out what Ruvic is doing to put a stop to this nightmare. To begin with the game took me around 13 hours on the hardest difficulty called survival difficulty. This was me taking my time with the game but not getting all the possible collectibles.

The Evil Within does do a good job of being a good survival horror for the first half of the game. What helps the experience dramatically is the atmosphere. The atmosphere and feel that is presented here is brilliant. The world that you venture in is a nightmare filled with grotesque creatures and unnerving scenery. All these culminates to a really horrific experience due to these elements being combined. The best presented experience was the hub world where you can save and can upgrade Castellanos’ attributes and weapons. This hub world was the place I found the most unsettling, the atmosphere here has been nailed causing this supposed safe place to become a nightmare in itself. The upgrades that are available are pretty standard; bigger stocks, bigger inventory, more health recovery, and increasing damage of weapons. One weapon in particular is a nice addition, being the ‘agony crossbow’. This crossbow is extremely useful when you have no ammo for your other weapons. Throughout the game you’ll encounter traps that can be deactivated which will reward you with parts, these parts can be used to craft ammo for the crossbow into varied types; explosive bolts, electro bolts, and standard bolts. This can be very useful when no ammo is available for your normal handgun, shotgun etc. A huge positive with the game is the essence of dying. Specific enemies will take huge portions of life from you or instantly kill you on the spot if they are within reach. Within the game you will die numerous amounts of time, some might find this frustrating but I have found it as a way to reinstate what type of game this is. The Evil Within strives of the player dying reconfirming that your there to survive with whatever items you have, adding to the tense atmosphere and improving the overall experience.

On the other hand The Evil Within does have some weaknesses about itself which may deter players from the full experience. It can be very easy to lose the story altogether and may resort into some internet searches to fully understand what’s going on especially towards the end of the game. For those looking for puzzles, there are next to none present here so there isn’t a break from the horror gunplay. There are some segments that don’t do the atmosphere any good, mainly towards the end of the game. During these they seem to be more run and gun rather than saving ammunition and calculating the best move. These parts turn down the atmosphere greatly, decreasing the tense aspect of the game. Speaking of the ending, the final boss fight is very poor and increases the action side aspect rather than the horror side. I feel like this is a missed opportunity and feel a lot more could have been done to change the gameplay for the final battle to make it more memorable rather than having a cop out big action battle.

The Evil Within is a game of two halves. The first half is great at reinstating the survival horror with a brilliant atmosphere brought together by the environments you visit, the enemies you encounter, and the danger of the antagonist that can one touch kill you. This all reinstates the survival horror aspect. The second half starts becoming more of an action game with ammo to spare and the enemies rushing towards you knowing where you already are. By doing this the tension drops and the survival aspect becomes less important. In all the The Evil Within does do some justice to the survival horror game and I was fully immersed within this dank world, however later levels can seem to be more action rather than survival. It is worth a purchase when it is at a lower price.

I love horror movies and games, so end up buying most horror games. Silent Hill is the best among them, with lots of terrifying elements and a minimum of frustrating boss fights. The Evil Within will take you back to the days of the original NES (think original Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania), where you must pass 5 levels in sequence, perfectly, and if you die anywhere along the way you need to repeat all 5 levels from the beginning.

Plenty of enemies have one hit kill attacks, which send you right back to the beginning of the last cut sequence to navigate the whole thing from scratch. It's like having all the frustrations of your workplace at home ! Who needs time off when you can be beaten down by both your boss and your choice of video game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is pretty much a giant disappointment in terms of story, gameplay is pretty much RE4. The story is pretty bland and boring, character's are unlikable with little to no backstory to them, all the while the main antagonist get's the entire story to himself as everything revolves around him. The story isn't complete either as they announced DLC to explain parts of the story (pay to have your questions answered). The game is also a complete lie as to what it is; stating that it's a survival horror game and at first yes it seems that way with a stealth mechanic that would of been helpful, but after the first chapter they hand you a crap ton of weapons and being spotted is almost a guarantee with upgrades only affecting weapons not sneaking, this is at first forgiven Mikami has always been known to make a game have a little action but it becomes clearer of where the game is going as fights or encounters become repetitive and annoying with encounters usually being that you get discovered and there's no way to sneak.

But back to story it's pretty badly written as the entire game is devoted to the main antagonist and his backstory, while our character get's a few pages of stereotypical backstory that only gives us a vague understanding of why we're here in the middle of the game. This along with clearly nothing to go on as for some reason the main antagonist and main character hate one another for no actual reason, the main character does at first have it out for Ruvik (main antagonist) but later discovers he was not responsible but in the late game they treat each other as nemesis's. There's also the dreadful ending that's obvious sequel bait and asking more questions then answering (until DLC) with it having no closure what so ever, and in fact the entire game is a giant waste of time since nothing was accomplished, in fact you made the situation worse by (spoiler) letting Ruvik escape into the real world (your in his mind but he's trapped and trying to find a way out by body jacking a little kid) which we don't even know is the real world and could be another layer of dream. The game also lacks what it wants to be as it makes dozens of homage's to other horror games/movies without providing anything for itself, trying to be Silent Hill 2 ends up being RE4 mixed with the two quests of Fallout 3 of saving your father from a simulation and going to the DLC to fight a brain in a jar, which guess what is exactly what happens in this game; Ruvik is a brain in a jar and it further proves that there's no reason for Sebastian and him to hate each other since Sebastian thought Ruvik killed his kid and kidnapped his wife but that entire time Ruvik was a brain and incapable of doing anything. The game also like I said lacks what it wants to be, take RE4 it was hell of fun and was self aware going between humor and horror easily, Evil Within however wants to be all serious and dark and executes it poorly by being un-fun which is ok in Survival horror and is suppose to substitute gameplay for story, except it does it the other way around of making gameplay fun as RE4s but still tries to pass itself off as survival horror making it boring.

Recommendation: wait for DLC see how everyone sees it and if it does deliver then by all means purchase the game (hopefully not at full price).

Plenty of replayability to get all the trophies/achievements. Personally I think action-heavy survival horror games are not scary; So I can forgive the game for not being as frightening as games like Silent Hill, PT, Alien: Isolation or Amnesia. The game has very creepy and diverse environments, with some of my favorites towards the end. I'm not a fan of the resolution and sometimes the frame-rate drops but never to the point where its unplayable. Sometimes the textures look a bit dated, perhaps due to the game being cross-generational but the character models look great on next gen. The design of the enemies and environments I thought were spectacular. The gameplay itself was fine. On Nightmare and AKUMU I often felt moments of difficulty similar to Dark Souls. The aiming needed a bit of fine tuning but I managed to get used to it. The puzzles were kinda dumb and didn't require any critical thinking to figure them out, however it was nice to see the action broken up by occasional puzzle/story sections. The game itself is much longer than your average shooter and will take you anywhere between 10~25 hours to complete depending on your difficulty/skill. However you can speed run it in less than 5 hours.

All in all it was a much better experience then all the resident evil games but sub par compared to The Last of Us. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice modern callback to survival horror games or challenging games.

    Things I liked:
    + + Amazing atmosphere
+ + Interesting and unique environments
+ + Extremely fun and challenging on Nightmare/AKUMU
    + + Fantastic Enemy / Boss Design
    + A good length
    + A good antagonist
+ A fair amount of replayability.

    Things I didn't like:
    - Bland characters (for the most part).
    - Controls could of been betters.
    - Slightly dated graphics.
    - Story was kinda of hard to follow.
    - 1920x768 resolution is a strange fit.
    - Expensive season pass for DLC.

You may found there are around 150 negative reviews. I am telling you they are telling the truth. This game is really unsuitable for casual gamers. For those casual gamers, please do select the easy mode starting the game. However, only when you play normal mode, can you realize how well designed this game is.
You have to really think before your every move. The ammunition is limited, health is limited, but the monsters are always powerful. I believe those who deliberately underscore this game, seldom use their brain before actions. Sometimes sneaking is the best solution, sometimes running away is, and sometimes shoot the enemy down is the best option. You have to decide for yourself and sometimes try a lot of times before moving on.
I love this game even more than dark souls 2, because it provides fair challenges for gamers like myself. You do not need to farm the monster to make the character stronger, but you need to farm the assignment (by repeating the assignment many times) to make yourself (the true you) stronger. As you become stronger, the character grows with you. However, this game will not become less challenging as you become stronger. It provides varying challenges with different combination of enemies, environment and even resources. There are really some frustrating times that I have to stop the game for a while and think how to go on. But once you find a way to move on, the satisfaction is immense.
In fact I was confused why would some reviewers say this game is without variation. I just realized that maybe they were just trying shoot every monsters down like COD.... Believe me, none of the challenges in this game will let you feel boring
Anyway this is really a good game for non-casual gamers, and as I write this review, I suddenly feel that any score under 9 is already an underscore.

So when I first heard news of The Evil Within, I was stoked! But all that changed when I started seeing those awful commercials claiming the people playing weren't paid actors! That commercial left a bad taste in my mouth. Video gaming is targeted at the idiotic masses who swallow up whatever the media says. I don't recall the three games I mentioned earlier having to do such nonsense. But I now know that they were paid actors, this game is not scary or suspenseful at all! It's on the opposite side of that spectrum, nits funny and boring. I am now on chapter 15 and I got a perfect way to describe this game, it's a bad beta of Resident Evil 4. The game starts out strong, it really does give you an a RE4 feeling but by the time you hit chapter 5, you have seen all this mediocre turd has to offer. The biggest offenders are the incredibly easy difficulty, now wait, but isn't everyone saying that you will die a lot? Yes it is true, but not because the game is challenging, but because it is designed to kill you, you will die a lot but because the game wants you to die. There is no escaping that. The combat is so boring for 2014, the enemies all behave the same way. They are all bipedal, expecting to fight creatures and monsters? Too bad! Because all I've gotten so far is incredibly mediocre zombies. It's not just boring, but also extremely clunky. Two out of ten shots from your pistol or sniper rifle will not hit the enemies, they will just pass through them. The me lee system works on one vs ones but only after you hit them a good ten to fifteen times. The biggest offender is not the awful nonsense story, the incredibly weak characters or the pretentious villain. It is the scripted nature of the game. Everything is scripted here, nothing happens without the game forcing it on you. Kinda like the turdish new tomb raider reboot. I worry. About the state of video games ever since the Wii and girls started coming to a hobby made by men for men. Yes girls suck at all things, I don't care for political correctness. there are definitely some things that this game does wrong, but there is a lot of things that this game does right too. the two big things that are wrong with this game are its flat characters and its overly ambitious story. the characters in the game really aren't interesting or well voice acted at all, but because this game's strength is primarily focused on gameplay, this issue hardly bothered me, what did bug me a little was the story though. I'm not going to spoil anything but for the first have of the game, I was compelled by the mystery and the concept of the plot but by the second half was confused and underwhelmed by the lack of good story telling, but after piecing the story together I have come to like the over all story but I don't like how they chose to tell it. the great thing about this game is that it is remarkably fun. if I was to sum up the game, It is like resident evil 4 mixed with psychological horror aspects like silent hill with much more gore and incredible atmosphere. this game is not quite as good as res4 or silent hill (at least the first two) but it has a similar quality. I can see why people were disappointed by this game, the developers had hinted that the story was going to be one of the main assets to the game but in the end it was mediocre to some and terrible to most others. but to me I can see the positive and intriguing aspects of the plot after taking some time to interoperate it and the flat characters to me makes it feel more welcoming to put my self in the story instead viewing it from my characters point of view making it more immersive, to make it clear I'm not defending the games faults I'm just saying it didn't really bother me so much because the rest of the game was so great. It was challenging and felt very satisfied when I overcame those challenges, the gameplay was awesome, and the letter box camera may have been a little annoying at first, but I got used to it and loved how cinematic it made the game look and create a limited view for further challenge and scares, and if you have a problem with that then you really shouldn't be playing a SURVIVAL HORROR game, it is not suppose to be easy and setting limitations is a very classic survival horror method to creating a greater challenge (fixed camera angels in early resident evil titles). It is not perfect but I really do love this game and was completely satisfied with it

Sound: Mikama needs to realise that annoying =/= creepy. I literally had to turn the "music" off at the options because the constant screeching of metal was making the game unplayable
Gameplay: Here's where it goes to hell. The camera spins, at random times, but its extra special when you are trying to run from something (aka always). Bullets occassionally go through enemies. Enemies grab you through solid walls. I had a zombie decapitate me with an axe through a wall.
Difficulty: Survival horror is supposed to be hard. But its called SURVIVAL horror. On the first play through, you will die between 200 and 400 times. Most times being you step into a room and bomb explodes or sniper shoots you in the head. Literally unpredictable deaths that you must die so you can change behavior next try. Also, in survival horror you should be able to kill some stuff. On the first playthrough, you pretty much cannot kill anything. Just shoot it and run. All game long. On the second playthrough, weapons and ammo carry over, making the game playable and almost enjoyable. But there is NO reason they couldn't have given you weapons and a bit more ammo in the first place. Inexcusable
Glitches: The game crashes. As in, the PS4 goes to an error screen and turns the game off. This happened 5 times on my first playthrough.
On my 2nd playthrough, on at least 3 occassions, I would enter a room, and my character would fall through the ground. I would be in limbo, a pitch black environment with nothing loaded. impossible to advance the game. And the best part, if I try to re-load that game (even from a significantly earlier save point), it did this glitch every time, meaning that entire save file was corrupted and you better hope that an earlier save file on another save slot wont do the same.
Those are unacceptable problems that should have delayed the game release.
    tl;dr
Great game idea (old-school survival horror) but game breaking glitches and painful difficulty and camera problems make it almost unplayable

I freaking adore this game! It reminds so much of the good old days of Resident Evil 4. I love the new and varied mechanics such being able to burn enemies so they don't come back to life and try to kill you. And I really do like the atmosphere of the game along with its presentation, visuals, and even cheesy story. I reccomend buying this game, it will be worth your time!

From boss fights that range from kindergarten finger painting easy, to advanced quantum physics there is no rhyme or reason. The most difficult enemy in the game is the useless camera. The story line is a mash up of the most cliché “survival horror” items in all games. Inventory and upgrades make no sense and only serve to make the game drag on.
In all this game is utter garbage and Bethesda should be slapped in the face and kicked town a flight of stairs for even having their name on it.

It´s one the great games of Shinji Mikami, like RE2, RE remake or RE4. And one of the surprise of this year for the terror game´s lovers.

    Extremely dissapointed with this title.
The main protagonist is dull and generic, graphics are last-gen and the gameplay is frankly boring. Controls are clumsy and arkward. Generally the game has a unfinished feel to it, like the team started with best intentions and then got really half-arsed about production. Theres no way this title deserves a 10, there are just too many faults with it

Some of the character design for the monsters is cool, but overall the evil within just feels dirivitive, linear and uninspired. Scariest moment - realising i could not return it after paying full price. Best thing about the game is the promotions team that gave it 10 scores on here (because no one else would).

This game has some interesting levels, fun action and a cool level-up system so it should score relatively high but the story makes no sense and the graphics are like a ps2 or xbox. Graphics are so bad its funny and the protagonist is like one of the characters in an Expendables movie. Terrible one-liners. Very very cliché. Its also super gory without being scary which comes off as weak.

Ammo is scarce, enemies are tough and come in great numbers, you can either run and hide, fight them head on or try a more sneaky approach.

The enemies themselves range from your typical zombies to much more creative baddies. The character designs themselves are very imaginative, with certain creatures and character being very memorable. The spider lady is very much the poster girl for The Evil Within.

Gameplay wise the game is great, although there are issues with the frame-rate, and also the annoying letterbox that borders the screen, although these are the only major issues that I can find with the game. The story is pretty good and inventive, once you understand what's going on at least, although some of the characters are pretty bland and boring, like your player character Detective Sebastian Castellanos. While there is no multiplayer component to the game, it does offer a few re-runs on harder difficulty's, with some unlockables and weapon upgrades to gain.

Overall, The Evil Within genuinely manages to scare and mess with your mind, while putting you into an actual survival horror scenario that's a challenge to overcome. It's a great game for horror fans, especially if your interested in something that changes the pace from the usual shooting gallery style action games, and while not perfect, i would say to definitely give it a try.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A strange game to be sure. What looked like a survival horror turned out to be a gory shooter. Not only did the game lack horror but the survival element was not good at all. Nothing AT All seemed like a threat (even the bosses) and the easy puzzles as well as the panic-less chase scenes made it get very repetitive very quickly especially later on as upgrades and more supplies make combat just boring and simple even though the enemies are cool. The game holds the player's hand WAY to much. There are also a lot of glitches and it just seems parts of the game lack refinement. However, the story (once it starts being actually told) is really cool and intriguing and despite an ending that still left a lot up in the air, the story itself made the game worth continuing even when the gameplay was getting dull. There is also tremendous detail in the environments and on the gamestyle. This had potential to be a fantastic game especially with its mind blowing story but a 12 hour game can simply not have that level of easiness and simplicity. Would not recommend for horror fans but for anyone looking for a unique experience with a great story, this is the game for you. Overall I enjoyed it. Expand

I'm not really sure why this got the ratings it did. The trailers were very interesting and the game looked promising from the advertisement. But overall, it was quite a disappointment. As a survivor horror it's not very scary and I can't make heads or tails of the plot. A lot of horror games are vague as far as story goes, but not to this level. I can't even come up with a summary. The characters aren't very interesting. Because there isn't a lot of back story, I'm not really invested in what's going on. There's nothing personal or meaningful about the imagery I am seeing--it's just random. Gameplay and fighting isn't too terribly fun either. From other reviews I read, a lot of people complained didn't have enough ammo. I didn't have that issue, but that's mostly because I avoided as many monsters as I could.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste your money on this game. It's just a confused mess. It's like the game developer didn't know want he wanted this game to be. It's not action pack enough to be action horror, not scary enough to be survivor, and too campy to be taken seriously.

It's got a lot of inspiration from RE4, but the first three chapters kinda fall flat. Once you get a ton of weapons and you're fighting boss after boss and killing three enemies with a bullet and a match, the game is pretty awesome. It's not scary aside from one boss that comes early on, the story is complete trash, and the main character is completely forgettable aside from his cool Leon styled haircut (but he'll never compare to Leon). The game is mind numbing action that can be a lil creepy from time to time, and the action feels solid and reminds me of RE4,even though it's not as good. The Evil Within is better than RE5 and 6, but isn't as good as The Last of Us or RE4. Right now, it's the best game on PS4, and it's the first time I've even touched my PS4 since Ground Zeroes. As of chapter 8, this game is worth a buy if you're getting blue balled from the lack of quality Triple A games on PS4. Oh yeah, and the letterboxing is terrible but you adapt to it's awfulness. Pros: The game play is great. The shooting is a little challenging at first, but an average gamer will get used to it. The beginning of the game is intense and one to remember.

Cons: The biggest problem I had was the story. The story is almost incoherent for the first 7 chapters. You will be confused. It does start making sense later, but I seemed to lose interest because I really didn't know what the hell was going on. I was basically trying to just survive not knowing why in the hell these things were happening. I know people are probably going to call me dumb, but I would consider myself an expert gamer. As for me, this game was more confusing then a damn silent hill game....and that's saying a lot! Other than that, the graphics still looked like they were for the last generation. These weren't really a big deal for me, but I had to be honest.

Ok where to begin, as i write this review i am currently on chapter 10 and the game is a blast, it feels a lot like Resident Evil 4 but uses the survival horror formula a lot more, there are many homages to the original Resident Evil game that fans of the series will notice, it's a challenging experience from the start and offers you many ways to tackle a situation, it doesn't hold your hand while you play, like i said before this game is true to the survival horror formula, so if you don't like dying maybe borrow the game from a friend first, the game is also very surreal in many parts and a lot of things don't make sense and that is great, it's not meant to make sense, it's meant to destroy your mind. On the downside sometimes the game just feels damn unfair, when i died many times i was left asking myself, "how?" ammo is scarce, enemies are unforgiving and the game makes you feel very fragile. If you want an honest review from a long time survival horror fan, keep reading. This game is what we've all been waiting for. I am at Chapter 7 right now and I can honestly tell you, it's definitely unequivocally my favorite game since The Last of Us.

It basically takes from Old school RE, mixed with RE4. Silent Hill environments, exceptional music! Graphics could have been a bit better, however when you look at the whole package it's worth it!
My only complaint would be the acting. Very sub par, although Acting in horror games have rarely been outstanding. There's puzzles, but I wish there was more. The amount of detail in the environments is incredible! With ammo and health being scarce, it forces you to conserve and search each room.
It adds a stress level and makes you think "Should I shoot? Sneak? Use traps?" "What if I need these bullets later?" The gore is absolutely amazing! Love tearing up their face with a nice head shot. Blood splatters everywhere.

To the people complaining and giving up after 3-5 chapters and giving the game 0-3, listen up!
The game is mean't to be played at 1am, in the dark with surround sound. Of course it wont have a scary atmosphere if you play it in day time next to your mother. The black bars are there for a reason. To make you feel claustrophobic and make it harder for you to know if there's something behind you. Get it?
I feel the people complaining/trolls are just mad because they find it too tedious. Find it too easy? Play it on the hardest difficulty. Too difficult? play it on easy. Conserving bullets, syringes is the name of the game, not a run and gun game. It can be but it's not smart. You need patience. I've beaten The Last of Us on "Survival" mode and let me tell you. It makes you want to give up, however it gives you a sense of accomplishments once completed.
    That's why it's survival horror.
You are complaining about Mr. Mikami copying from previous RE,Silent Hill, The last of Us games?
What's wrong with taking the good things from previous survival horror and implementing them to try and make this the best game in a long time? EVERY GAME has taken parts from previous games as a stepping stone. Let me guess, if they didn't take those parts from previous games, you would still complain about them for not taking the good from previous games. All the old school fans would be disappointed. Mikami, put in all the positives to try and make all fans (Old-new) happy!

I'm giving this game a 10 to counter the trolls and players that say the game is horrible because they actually find it too tedious. The game deserves a 8.5 to be honest. You need to play it at night with the lights turned off, HUGE difference.

If you don't mind the bad commentary and lack of puzzles. It's a must buy for any survival horror fan!

    My 2 cents!

Disregarding its simple story, boring characters, unfair death and last gen visuals, so far this is as good as it gets. It's genuinely scary, aesthetically beautiful and stresses you out as much as Resident Evil 4 did. This is a nightmare you won't soon forget.

The Evil Within: A ridiculous, directionless mess of random horror.

Mikami, the master of survival horror? Well, this game proves something everyone should have known already: It’s not Mikami who makes the brilliant games, it's Mikami AND his team. And clearly, his current team isn't the best!

Let's start with the good things though.

Some of the environment designs are really good, especially the idea of the asylum with the light that results in very cool vistas and a nice and original atmosphere. The color palette of green and yellow early in the game is also very cool. The game is playable, it's not boring and somewhat challenging, and does show some potential, especially in the later chapters.

....However, the game has so many serious and obvious flaws that are impossible to overlook.

It is a huge mess of gameplay, characters, scenes, colors, interface elements etc etc. There is no buildup in tension or story, nor any character development. Instead, you go from random area to random area in high succession. Meanwhile, the characters are generic, boring and lack development. Why do I care about the doctor and the (badly voice-acted) mental patient, or the Kidman-girl with the most plastic generic face I have ever seen? Or the main character for that matter? Why are his clothes so 1920? Why do a lot of characters have Spanish names yet don't look Spanish at all? Why is there such a contrast in Ruviks design, being so anime-ish? Was he designed by somebody else? Where is the consistency?

And the dialogue is ridiculous! The main character, after encountering zombies, doorway mirrors, brain devices, waking up in the same room over and over again, traps, a monstergirl with excessive limbs, invisible enemies, states after 2 hours in the game something like " Maybe we should get out of here, this place is strange". Wow, really? You didn't notice earlier? One of many, many examples.

The interface elements are a mess of styles (sometimes sort of realistic, sometimes in color, sometimes portal style icons). The eye that is constantly on screen to show if enemies see you is sometimes ridiculous. They are trying to tear of my head, of course they see me, I really don't need that icon there to remind me.

The black bars that cut off half your vision would not have been such an issue, if the developers would have adjusted the player size to the now smaller screen size. But they didn't and now it feels like you are playing the game squinting your eyes. Why did they put those bars in anyway?

The lighting and textures in the game look dated, they are sometimes overly lit or the contrast is too high. The wood in some areas has so much contrast it looks like painted plastic. The fog is very white as if constantly lit by bright lamps. There are lights everywhere, which ruins any mysteriousness or scariness of the scenes.

The framerate drops often and there are a lot of LOD issues.

It all feels very "gamey" (with random, unexplained ammo everywhere, level design with obvious traps and keys and doors, interface icons etc). That gamey-ness makes the game lean towards an almost comical atmosphere. The P.T. demo for instance is so scary because of its realism, as is the Last of Us. You can sort of imagine being there. Yet this game reminds me constantly that it's nothing more than a game. Like the effect of the main character blowing apart when triggering a trap. That's not scary, that is really over-the-top ridiculous.

The dated "you die and have to start at a checkpoint a while ago" mechanic annoys greatly. Playing the same part over and over again is bothersome enough as it is, but passing that jump-scare moment again and again (like that guy that randomly crashes down from the sky in the village) is absolutely ridiculous.

    I could go on.

The game feels like a thousand random horror ideas thrown in to one, without any selection at all. It really is as if no one was directing this game, such a mess of random ideas, quality and styles.

    Really, Mikami?

The Evil Within liked me, in my opinion very suitable survival, but poorly researched horror.Take that someone would not say I liked this game (I'm just puzzled why you need so violently insult game, yet it is not terrible, and even good).I was pleased with the new masterpiece from Shinji Mikami and I advise buy this game and go through.

If you are expecting a fantastic survival horror come back to our gaming world, well, it was not this time..

First thing many of us heard about this game is it was created by Shinji Mikami, the mind behind Resident Evil series.

While classic Resident Evil games are known by many (specially players from the 90's and early 2000) as quality games, they're not really well known for a groundbreaking story.

Actually, in terms of storytelling, the Resident Evil series always stayed far away behind Konami's Silent Hill series, which involved much more deeper themes involving human feelings, while Resident Evil always focused more on cheap scares than anything else.

The Evil Within is much closer to the Resident Evil series in this aspect, what is a really bad thing considering that the series popularity heights was more than 10 years ago.

I did not found anything interesting in the plot, and the whole game remains unexplained from chapter 1 to chapter 15.

The whole plot just looks like an excuse to throw some very bad developed characters for a gore bloody bath, cheap scares, and some very annoying design decisions.

First thing I must comment is the graphics.
They're average at best and there are games from 2007 like Heavenly Sword that looks prettier! This is really a shame for a 2014 game that got ported to new systems like the PS4.

This applies specially in the character design and animation department, where The Evil Within is really poor. Just look at Leslie model... it looks like it was made with The Sims 2 sim creator (the tools to create your sim and share over the community..).

This is unaceptable for a 2014 ambicious production like The Evil Within.

There are also many frame rate problems and texture popup, low resolution textures and low polygon models.

The sound effects are nice and does fit the theme, like the screams and the environmental sounds (water, fire). The bloody explosions from bursting corpses looks very realistic to me, so in this aspect the game is ok.

The music is forgettable, not a single piece of the soundtrack will remain in your memory after you finish the game (in Resident Evil many tracks did, like the save room from RE2).

Voice acting is average, the characters personalities are just bland as they look, none of them express emotions and everything sounds artificial.

The only character I think deserves a mention is Tatiana, the nurse from the save rooms, which is just as cold as her voice actress makes her look like, and does fit her role very well.

All the others are bland and uninspired, specially the main protagonist, his two supporters, and the villain.

From the main characters, only Leslie (modeled in The Sims 2 editor...) will be remembered, not because his design choices are good, but because the rest of them are very poorly developed.

The gameplay is mediocre too, and feels a lot like Resident Evil 4, a game released a decade ago.
The Evil Within main problem is that it relies too much in a bloody gore bath, with some of the most cheap scares ever that are very predictable and not scary at all.

The enemies shows how poor the design choices are. While some does look interesting, most of them are stupid and annoying, like the zombies with machine guns...

Other enemies are not very original and looks like extracted directly from Resident Evil 4, like the chainsaw guy. The safe-head guy looks like a copy from Silent Hill 2 Pyramid Head. The long haired monster looks like ripped from Silent Hill 4...the list goes on.

The way you fight these enemies is also boring because most of the fights are more annoying than fun, involving run from infinite re-spawning enemies (safe-head guy).

The art direction is very well done, when we talk about the environments, constructions, and all the objects that helps to give this game a very dark atmosphere.

The city levels are poor designed, and the over the top cutscenes in the last chapter are laughable, specially the way you fight the last boss.

Many bad design choices were made to extend this game lenght too, as this is a long game with 15+ hours of gameplay (most of them very frustrating by the huge ammount of deaths against enemies you dont stand a chance or cheap one hit kills that will probably make you angry and want to give up).

At the end of the first playthrought the game gives you some nice rewards for a new adventure, but this game does not have any replay value at all.Actually I coudn't wait to finish it the sooner as I could and my suffering got extended to the 15 more hours I mentioned before. My final opinion is this game doesnt worth, and will only be remembered by its ammount of blood and gore. There's no story, no memorable characters, no good music, not even in the main purpose this game is good. In the parts it doesnt fail completely, it does only average. Sorry Mikami, but it wont sell enough for a sequel. It doesnt deserve one.

The good - game nails perfect horror atmosphere, gameplay and visuals. It has amazingly designed enemies. It's definitely challenging enough and does amazing job by putting you under the pressure. Every surrounding has gimmicks to it and game demands exploration to be good at it. Overall very detailed surrounding only add to it's creepy experience. I definitely recommend it to all horror games fans who want challenge themselves.
The bad - it's a shame but story is hard to follows and lacks red line to connect the dots. Stealth doesn't work like it should sometimes.
Overall it's solid 8/10 game but I gave it 10 because of how i missed games like it.

Sounds is perfect! All the eerie sounds effect just add up to the mood. Story wise simple, like u might've heard others said, there's virtually none.

Overall this game is great horror-survival, perfect for it's genre, could've been way better, hopefully Mikami will get rid of those ugly black bars and at least give it a story for TEW 2.

I have waited almost 2 years for this game bc I respect the creator of resident evil. I was expecting a game like RE1,2,3,CV. That is the biggest negative from this game for me.... I was left unsatisfied of the story as it wasn't explained or at least given a worthy scene. Shinji is known for making mysterious games which is awesome but at least in RE1 you had a scene with Wesker and Jill or a confrontation dialogue... this game has nothing.

Regardless, I am giving this a great rating because you can tell the creators made this game with passion, originality and with talented artistic direction.

The first 30 minutes is the BEST I have ever scene in a video game... it was truly epic. Even the first few villages it was very very enchanting and the lore seemed perfect. Personally, I felt it got blemished after CH7 because it felt like the last of us(empty buildings, jump through a hole in a wall that leads to another building, pick up ammo, etc)....

Also, there was barely any puzzles like RE1,2,3...

I thought he wanted to make a game for the core audience again???

I felt it was really dishonest promotion. This game IS NOT classic survival horror (no puzzle, only 1st hour has tention, no worthy dialogue scenes).

but what it does well...it does EXCEPTIONALLY well!
