What I find astonishing, as an 'older' gamer, is the lack of appreciation this game seems to have. Perhaps for people of my generation, who were the first to experience video games outside of research laboratories, this game is the realization of decades of dreaming and wondering - what would it be like to have a more embodied experience fighting a dragon, delving into a subterranean lair, riding a horse through a snowstorm down a treacherous mountain path while being chased by a monster.

In fact, as far as I am concerned, anyone who has spent some time with this (on PSVR or PCVR) and is not impressed is simply someone I cannot trust in terms of making a claim about any video game.

    Amazing.

Totally blown away with this version of Skyrim. I did upgrade to a PS4 pro for this game as I was not happy with the visuals on the standard PS4. It is very nice on the pro a lot sharper which allows me to play for a lot longer 6 plus hour sessions. I don't find this game causes any motion sickness.

Any review that complained about controls is wrong, you can play exactly the same way as regular skyrim with a controller. As others mentioned, you feel like you are really in Skyrim. While graphics are downgraded, I believe the added level of immersion is a solid tradeoff. I have now seen and done things in Skyrim VR that I never did during my 300 hour playthrough with the flat version.

As someone who fell in love with Skyrim way back in 2011 as a teenager, I may be a little biased. I've put hundreds of hours into this game on several different playthroughs on 2 different consoles, and I'm adding a "third" with this PSVR version. Let jump right in.

It's hard not to give this a 10/10 solely because it's VR. I can't tell you how many times I would just stop, look around, and think to myself, "Holy sh*t, I'm literally standing in Whiterun right now," which is a very weird and awesome feeling. VR is a whole new level of gaming and it's only going to get better.

    Narrative: 8/10
Skyrim tells an engaging story that keeps you interested throughout. It may lose traction a little bit here and there but it mostly keeps a steady pace. There are a couple more intriguing story lines in the DLCs if you get them complete version.

    Protagonist: 10/10
Being able to fully customize your characters appearance and apparel automatically renders a 10/10 IMO. Skyrim executes this perfectly. However, in VR you cannot see your own character so it's kind of pointless. Regardless, still awesome.

    Characters/Interactions: 10/10
Skyrim really immerses you into the game with things like being able to get married, adopt children, own pets, build your home. All of these things create such a unique experience in VR that it's hard to put the headset down sometimes. Not to mention some awesome supporting characters you meet along the way, both friend and foe.

    Gameplay: 10/10
Man, there's something about using the Move controller to cast a spell from your "hand" and blowing an enemy to pieces. Or wielding a sword and slicing your way through a wave of bandits. Or drawing back the bow behind your head and sniping a giant across a field. All of it is just amazing. It's hard to believe that this is where we're at with technology, but I couldn't be happier with it!

I've been playing videogames for almost 30 years. Skyrim on PSVR is the best gaming experience I have ever had. So immersive, so engrossing, so amazing to be inside the world. I play for hours (sitting), using Moves, and love every second of it. I marvel at it repeatedly, and literally say "wow" while playing.

When playing a VR game, one expects a certain trade-off: one gains immersion in exchange for a substantial loss in resolution and, usually, drastic reduction in content and length of play. Happily, since this is Skyrim, the latter is not an issue here. The former is, and very much so. But as I said, this is to be expected and, speaking personally, it was during the opening sequenceWhen playing a VR game, one expects a certain trade-off: one gains immersion in exchange for a substantial loss in resolution and, usually, drastic reduction in content and length of play. But as I said, this is to be expected and, speaking personally, it was during the opening sequence that I decided that the trade-off was worth it.
Alas, not every aspect has come off so well. I've always said that if a PS4 VR game allows for the use of the motion controls it's always best to use them. I used the word 'said', because I can no longer honestly say so. If you're exploring, the motion controls work just fine once you get used to them (which may take some time). Using the motion controls to swing a sword or draw a bow or aim a blast of magic feels extremely satisfying (although in the case of the bow it's nearly impossible to hit anything at range without a great deal of practice). When you throw everything onto combat, though, it completely falls apart. Why? There is no way, or at least no way I can discover, to use the motion controls to move any way but forwards. You can't back up and, depending on your settings, turning quickly to face an attacking enemy may be a challenge as well. What I feel was needed here was something akin to the navigation controller, something with a thumbstick, but alas no such peripheral exists.
Fortunately, the game plays perfectly fine with the standard dualshock controller and the move controls are completely optional.
Some may also be disappointed with the absence of mods. I understand they were left out due to the difficulty of adapting them for a VR environment for which they were not designed. This makes sense, but that doesn't keep it from being a disappointment.

Now that the bad is out of the way, we can move onto the good, which is essentially everything else. If a fantasy rpg is going to be adapted for VR instead of built from scratch, Skyrim was an excellent choice and my opinion is that, motion controller fail aside, this adaption is exactly what an open world fantasy RPG on VR *should* be. Plus, not only is Skyrim an amazing game but you likely have more potential play time with this one game than than you do with all other existing physical PSVR releases combined. That's value, that is.

Now, go buy this game for your VR. No, it isn't perfect, But unless you hate this kind of game, it's definitely a must-have.

I want to believe that it will give a push to developing of open world VR games. My dream came true. The most of people criticize Bethesda for reissuing games. But in this case they are not right.

Only played on a pro, and yes, graphics are rough at a distance, but scale, and crispness close to you feels just as good as almost any other game. Quite a feat concidering the vastness of the world and all the stuff going on. didnt see a single hitch that indicates an FPS drop.

What I didnt like, was no option for smooth turning with the PSmoves. When you have your weapons sheathed, the move controllers appear in-game, and this is very immersion breaking. The whole selling point of VR is immersion. Minor annoyance.
Also I wish there was some way to view my character in 3rd person, inventory screen or something, But I do understand that its not as easy as implementing a 3rd person camera mode, as this would also break immersion.

Overall a really solid VR game, and not at all the "lazy port" i was dreading.

I spent hundreds of hours in original Skyrim, finished the platinum trophy, but Skyrim VR feels so new and so different. It adds whole new dimension of experience. You really feel like you are there, especially in the dungeons, which are now scary. I was never fan of bows in original game, but I really enjoy playing as an archer here. I chose the motion control, normal locomotion and after one hour you do not want to go back to a DS4 anymore. Bethesda has found an amazing control scheme using the PS move. Shooting arrows with a bow feels like shooting with a real bow in real life, it is extremely well implemented after a little bit getting used to. Similar for slashing and stabbing with a sword. It is as if you were doing it in real life. Blocking incoming arrows with a shield is again amazing.
The controls and buttons schemes are extremely well mapped on the 2 moves and it is great. Using fire and other magical cast is something you have to experience in VR.
I read somewhere that the graphics are still better on a PS4 Pro, but as I mentioned before, I still have to encounter a major bug on a PS4 og.
I haven't experienced any sickness or nausea after few hours of gaming uninterrupted. There are quite generous options in the settings to accommodate the VR experience to your liking. Especially the FOV and the snap turning intensity etc.

Update 1: After almost 20 hrs of playing, I definitely confirm my score of 10. Using the bow and arrows is terrific especially after you invest some skill point in it. The dungeons are now scary, very scary. I had several jump scares that left me trembling. Your first encounter with a Draugr will leave some marks lol. Holding a torch while roaming dungeons is like in real life. Fabulous. I have never experienced something like that after more than 35 years of gaming. Ignore the people that are complaining about the graphics. It’s true that the resolution is low, but the graphics are well detailed and when you’re inside the World of Skyrim it’s not an annoyance at all. You’ll get used to it rapidly. Bethesda has made a big service to VR by releasing Skyrim for it. It has demonstrated that huge games can be adapted to the technology and are as much as if not more enjoyable than in 2D. I hope other big developers will follow suite and jump in the train (I’m looking at you Witcher 3. Imagine casting magic by drawing rectangles with your PS Move). Bethesda has proven as well that VR is not a gimmick but a real revolution in how we play video games. I’m hopeful for the future.

Update 2 (One year later): I purchased a ps4 Pro and I'm playing on it at the moment. The experience is noticeably smoother in terms of graphics and frame rate. I advise you to play Skyrim VR on a Pro. I clocked 108 hours up till now and still I'm not bored. I originally never played the expansion and they offer me a lot of additional content and a new island. The developers have patched the games several times and the latest patch in my opinion brought the most improvement to the game. I really wish Bethesda brought Fallout to VR and make good use of the Aim controller.

To summarize my long review of the game. This is the game I bought my PSVR for a few months back, and I made the right choice. If you loved Skyrim and you want to experience it in VR with a new character, do not miss this opportunity and get the game or the Skyrim VR bundle. If this sells a lot, it will push other big developers to release big games in VR and will keep the technology alive.

I have a room set up with video switches where I can, and do, use any of them at any time to play my favorite games. I had never played Skyrim, but have logged hundreds of hours in Fallout 4, which has very similar mechanics and whatnot.

I mention this only to give context to this next statement — Skyrim in VR is the greatest gaming experience of my entire life. Period. You will see lots of videos of it posted, you will see thousands of words written about it, but nothing can explain the experience of being IN the game world. I’ve had my PSVR for a year now, and I’ve played a dozen or so games with it, enjoying some more than others, but loving it the whole time. Yet none of it prepared me for this game.

Step one: Use the Move controllers, but turn off teleporting. There’s probably a 30-mi Ute learning curve before you’re 100% comfortable with them, but once that last click falls into place it all feels pretty magical. I have always hated the Move controllers, but forced myself to get used to them so I could experience the bow and the magic properly, but in the end I discovered that I love them even in the menus. Bethesda did an amazing job with what I had always assumed were useless, horrible controllers.

Long story short, again, best gaming experience ever. No exaggeration, no hyperbole, it’s flat-out all I want to do all day now. I can’t get it out of my head. I had concerns about wearing the headset for long periods, even with a year of experience, but now i’ve sat in-world for over 4 hours at a stretch with almost no discomfort.

    Get it. Play it. ASAP.

As for the review from Game Informer, giving Skyrim VR a 50...I was shocked, until I read the full article. Here's an excerpt, and all you really need to read:

"Skyrim VR also made me sick, but I attribute this more to PlayStation VR than to the game itself. **Every PlayStation VR game makes me a little ill**..."

Kevin Hilliard, the man responsible for such a subpar rating, should probably refrain from writing reviews for any games relating to VR. If I'm a food critic, who is allergic to a key ingredient in a prepared dish, you wouldn't ask me to write a review on how it tastes. Seems fairly common sense to me.

I watched all the videos leading up to the release and kept up with all the latest news. My biggest worries were motion sickness with movement, how well the motion controllers work with the game and if it could be played in the sitting position. This was mainly because ive only seen people play it standing up.

Ive tried the dual shock and motion controllers and both work well. Movement is easier with the DS4 but with a little practice you can get movement with the MC to work well. Basically, you move in the direction they are facing. To go backwards you point it up and slightly back at you. I found that it takes a little while to remember the button presses on both of them and you have to hold down the triggers in order to scroll menus. With this knowledge it shouldnt take long for anyone to get to grips with it.

Sitting down works well, although i probably dont have quite enough space with my setup for it to be perfect, i find that if i lower the MC too much they dont respond very well, even with the camera tilted down as much as possible. Im sure this is a small problem i can work out with some time tomorrow though.

As for motion sickness, well its practically zero. I do get a little motion sickness from VR games andor tiredness, but after a full day in the construction industry ive still managed to put in 3/4 hours solid with out a break with very little discomfort indeed! Thats even moving turn speed to full and on smooth movement for turning with the vignette off (thats the black circle FOV that defaults on) I could easily see some serious mammoth skyrim sessions turning in to hours at a time without a problem.

The only thing that would be nice is mod support. Im pretty sure they will add this at some point, not that ive ever relied heavily on mods it still would be a nice added bonus.

Now on to what it actually looks like. Well its not bad at all, Bethesda's character models have never been "beautiful" thats not going to change, but they look pretty clear as do the houses and structures that ive seen in my first few hours, i dont know if this has something to do with playing it on a PS4 Pro or if if looks the same on a standard one. Ok it might not be up there with Resident Evil or Farpoint looks wise but i was still pleasantly surprised at what i saw.

On to skills now. Archery looked very cumbersome in the videos but its surprisingly fun with MC's and not as difficult as it looks to aim it up to get a shot. Magic is as fun as it looks in the videos, hence why im making a vampire sneaky magic user this time around :) The hands (yes they are the floating hands we see in most VR games) look great with magic flowing out of them. In some ways the most disappointing aspect is using hand weapons like swords etc.... mainly because they just float and you dont even see a hand holding the weapons, but its still acceptable.

Even if you have played the original game as most have this is truly a fresh and exciting way of seeing skyrim in a totally different perspective. Its not often that i congratulate software companies for really trying their hardest to make the best of a game (some EA could do with doing) but Bethesda has my respect for a job well done. If your sitting on the fence about spending money on a 6 year old game, i can understand that as i was sceptical initially, especially on some of the elements ive covered here. Rest assured though that you could do far far worse then spend your money on Skyrim VR. The only down side that i can see is that im sure as with the original, the bugs will no doubt be present in certain quests but hopefully nothing game breaking im sure.

This is a wonderful experience for both Skyrim veterans and newcomers. Yes, it's the full price tag, but it's also not "just a port", as VR makes this an entirely different game. You will be in awe at what the environments of Skyrim look like at full-scale. I find it easiest to just list the pros and cons of this version of the game.

    PROs:
-Game runs incredibly well (!!), high FPS with no stutter, no crashes, few bugs (for an ES game), PS4 fans don't even get stressed
-Graphics of environment are really nice for VR, especially interior. Lighting, buildings, and mountains (up-close and distant) look great. It's obvious Bethesda had to "pick-and-choose" which textures to keep at hi-res and which ones to downgrade to run VR. They did a good job prioritizing. You're probably wondering "some people say the graphics are crap, and some say they're amazing, which are they"? The answer is: they're good, but expect some downgrade in certain (but not all) "up-close" textures and distant NPCs.
-NPCs up-close (not far away) look incredible as well. They actually look less ugly in VR than in the special edition. They also look much more realistic in VR. There's detail I never noticed before; certain NPCs are like entirely new people. (Example: Irileth)
-The scale is incredible. Exteriors and especially interiors take on a whole new meaning in VR. I never knew Dragonsreach ceiling was so tall. I've noticed so many new details in environments I never saw in my 1,000 hours of Skyrim 2D. Looking down even a flight of stairs is amazing, not to mention peaking over the edge of a cliff. Hope you don't have a fear of heights!
-There are a plethora of comfort options for people who get motion sickness
-Can play with move controls (which mostly work really well, see CON below) or Dualshock 4 (exact same controls as 2D Skyrim)
-Controls overall are great. Magic and archery are fun (using the Dualshock 4, archery is more accurate than it's ever been in Skyrim. You feel like a skilled archer)
-The UI is GREAT. Text is tack sharp, it's easy to read the menus and dialogue, the compass and status bars are intuitive, and the skill trees are impressive and beautiful.
-It's Skyrim. Same full game with Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire. We already know what an incredible game it is.

    CONs:
-NPCs are very blurry from a distance (this was probably a sacrifice made to make the game run so well)
-Move controls do not yet incorporate fully smooth turning (but you can smooth-turn with the Dualshock 4 controller, my preferred controller anyway). They're also flawed in some ways (archery isn't as good with moves), but I think these will be ironed out by Bethesda with feedback
-Have not yet found a way to view your character after creating him/her. I'm guessing there either is one (mirror?) or it will be added
-Textures do take a hit. Main examples: far away objects such as White Run look like vanilla again; some textures up-close (such as grass and flowers) also were reduced in resolution.

Overall, HIGHLY recommend this game if you're either a Skyrim fan or a VR fan. If you are, get it.

I’ll keep it simple. This is the best game I’ve ever played and I’ve played them all since the 80s. Critics will cry about graphics or they got sick because they’re not used to VR. The graphics are great once your actually IN SKYRIM. People can criticize this masterpiece but they’re the ones missing out. Big time.

    Hello,

I want to say that I am lucky to have never played Skyrim. Not even the intro. I saw a few quick releases on the net and that's it. I tried Oblivion on XBOX 360 but I did not hang, especially because of the third person view. While a game like the Witcher 3 has captivated me to the end and even on these DLC. I've always dreamed of an RPG at "The Witcher" in VR, and this Skyrim is a good entry in the field.

Of course it's a date engine, with graphics that date but do not forget that VR graphics are less elegant than HD graphics on a television. Moreover, given the greatness of the open world of Skyrim, the PS4 (Pro in this case) would be able to dazzle us in a gigantic world and that may very well be exciting ... Regarding the game and its history, as he's been recognized for a long time, I do not care at all on that side.

And well after a few hours of games, I can assure you that the immersion is very good. It really feels like living another life on the lands of Tamriel. Frankly, I bought a lot of VR games and I can assure you that this one is the quintessence of Farpoint and Resident Evil 7. Except that it is almost 200 hours of games (thanks to all the DLC included in ).
The graphics are superb (PS4 Pro). After there is always a small effect of pixelization due to the helmet, but given the immersion and the size of the open world we can forgive him that. I can guarantee you without saying too much that this game will be my best PSVR game. The few hours spent in this world have completely transformed me. Very little aliasing and NPC animations are really correct in VR.
The handling of PS MOVE is good (it can never be excellent due to their technology) but at least it is not average or mediocre. Playing with the 2 PS Move while walking (tele transportation not mandatory) with the sword in one hand and the shield in the other is really something. Moreover the music and the dialogues are of high quality and in French naturally.
Regarding the story, I had never played but I can guarantee you that I feel a little the Geralt de Rive Tamriel. To the point that when we put the helmet, we look at his hands to look for the shield and the sword (knowing that we can also use bows, axes and many others). Farpoint we had the story but a little short (6 to 7H), and personally I am more attracted by the titles where the story is focused on the elves, goblins, magic, earth-like that of the "Land of medium "than to annihilate aliens with laser guns on a rocky planet (even if the title is very good).

Resident Evil 7 is excellent too, but this is more of a fear problem, which prevents you from playing too long.

And both end in less than ten hours for the first, and less than 20 or 30 for the second. With Skyrim VR, we are talking about 200 hours of intense stories, in a beautiful open world (on PS4 Pro) where the few graphic imperfections (very minor) are quickly forgotten in view of the greatness of the title and the immersion it provides.
So if you do not have a helmet and want to trade your monotonous life vote against a life full of dangers and chivalrous adventures then you know you can buy the title with your eyes closed (and the helmet that goes with it) !! !!! If you have the helmet then you can rush on game that is just excellent and more than immersive in VR.

You understand, more than a simple portage, this game may be simply the best game PSVR. In any case if you are an RPG fan and you always dream to live the same adventures in real life then this game in virtual reality is for you.

The navigation in PS-Move is not optimal (we click on the trigger then we go right, left, up or down with the ps move then release, to make the equivalent of a joystick). It's not great but hey, as long as there is no PS-Move with a joystick we will have no choice.

    Bye.

Early VR adopters wanted a full length, AAA game, and Bethesda provided (whereas other companies could not justify the expense for a niche market). This was a favor for early adopters, and Bethesda should be commended for it.

This experience is INCREDIBLE. An actualized sense of scale has an astounding effect on immersion; you feel like you are actually there, and the threat of enemies becomes immediate and profound. Dragons genuinely appear 3 stories tall. Purchased houses feel intimate and personalized. The simple feeling of entering a tavern and feeling the solidity of the walls, or the height of the ceiling, make it unmatched by any other RPG experience.

Controls are where I feel like Bethesda should earn the highest credit. The PS Move is a flawed controller at best... and yet Bethesda managed to make the experience smooth. Unless you're prone to barfing, you should immediately turn on smooth movement. The mix of snap rotation with forward movement is surprisingly smooth. I still wish I had twin sticks for easier side-stepping (this control scheme requires movement of the left controller for side-stepping or back-stepping, which interferes with the equipped item in that hand), but all things considered, it's an impressive achievement. I was particularly surprised to find that menu movement is very elegant. Though it takes some getting used to, after about 2 days of playing, I can slide through menus like a boss.

The best element is the use of motion controls for weapon/spell usage. Archery is my favorite VR skill by far... you literally aim by closing one eye, staring down the shaft of the arrow, and mimicing the pull-back action of a real life bow. It works like a charm, and adds a tremendous amount of tension to the battles (killing an enemy with an arrow as it bears down on you gives you a serious adrenaline rush). Flamethrower-style spells work extremely well, too. Fireball-style spells are a bit more wonky aiming-wise, but as long as the difficulty isn't maxed, it kind of adds to the challenge. Shields are also particularly fun, as you literally hold your arm up to block. They did a magical job of adding tiny details, like the fact that arrows stick into your shield (and you can pick them out after the battle for free arrows!).

People are quick to criticize VR for expending cash on a limited group of testers, and Bethesda for its rerelease cash-grab habits. But I cannot emphasize enough that this game is a one-of-a-kind experience, and regardless of your opinions of VR or Bethesda... if you bothered to strap on the helmet, you couldn't help but have a good time. In this case, they're giving gamers what they want, and being fiscally responsible while doing it. It's a win-win, and they deserve a big thumbs up.

Sure the graphics are not state of the art, yes the move controls take a while to master, but they work well - something many have failed to take the time to understand. This is the closest yet to actually being IN a fantasy world - something anyone who's rolled a die as a child can relate to. The sense of presence is stunning - foes surprise and terrify, the landscape frequently astonishes, and 1st person dialogue engages. It turns the routine exploration in videogames into a genuine exploration of unknown space - dungeons are actually creepy, there is a sense of wonder and discovery. Using your hands as weapons is just fantastic, "Legolasing" a dragon with rapid fire arrows is a blast and it's transformed this title into something amazing. I'd give it a 9 but there are some bugs and I find the lack of 3D spatial audio a genuine omission. Still, this is the deepest and most enthralling VR experience to date, available on a mass market setup for the right price. Pay the money and enjoy! Expand

I would advise that players use a pair of PS Move controllers - they make the game that much more immersive and it's easier to move things around in the game world than trying to use your normal dual shock controller. Archery is so much better that I've hardly used any other kinds of weapons! I also find magic a lot easier to aim than it was using a controller.

VR sickness isn't a problem when I use the "teleport" movement, although as a newbie to VR it was a problem before I discovered the settings, so if you find yourself feeling queasy I'd recommend that you change the VR settings accordingly.

The graphics do not feel as crisp as the original PS3 version, in particular it's more difficult to see objects in the distance, but this is a limitation of the hardware rather than the game itself, and by no means does it make the game any less playable.

All in all I'd say this is a must have game if you invested in the PSVR; of all the games I've tried so far this is the best.

Playing an archer or a mage is a blast, as is using a torch to light up your path, throwing a bottle to catch the attention of a guard. There a so many little things, little details that I never took care of and VR is making me noticing and experiencing them like never before. Watching the snow, the stars, drowning in flooded caves, everything just feels there. When I launch the title, I am in the game, I am gathering mushrooms for alchemy, catching butterflies - hell, every little thing is just so fun. I always played without fast travel, as I feel it is the true way to play Skyrim. Exploration is a big part of the game, of the experience. It is almost impossible to start a quest without venturing elsewhere as new discoveries, camps or caves are found.

Now, I waited and watched a lot of reviews before buying the PSVR. I didn't have much faith in the moves controllers as they are re-used old tech from the ps3 era. But I'm really surprised by how great they feel in the hands and by their accuracy. While not perfect and not as precise as Vive or Oculus controllers, they handle nicely and have not triggered any frustration in my game sessions.

The resolution is not great, but everything in the game makes up for it. Sure, if you have a decent computer that can handle the game, I would recommend you to buy the PC version instead. But for the price, if you only have a ps4 and are a fan of Skyrim, do yourself a favor and buy this. Even on the base ps4, which I have, I have no complaints: the performance is great, the game is blurry, but still beautiful and we have to thank Bethesda for porting a behemot of this kind in VR.

I would even buy Morrowind VR would they dare to do it, as those games are just meant to be experienced. Loosing myself in an open world this big and complex is the best thing gaming has done for me since a long long time. And I just hope that we'll get to play more rpgs like this on VR.

It’s fun enough that I am going to play through Skyrim again. However there are a number of things that I feel could really have improved the VR experience.

Pros: 1. It runs really well and looks good enough on PS4 pro 2. Aiming spells and arrows is very fun. 3. Melee combat feels exciting, a much needed upgrade, I was not a fan of melee combat in original Skyrim at all. 4.

    3. Melee combat feels exciting, a much needed upgrade, I was not a fan of melee combat in original Skyrim at all.
    4. Inventory and menus are actually really easy to use with move controllers, aside from the perks screen which is cumbersome.
    5. Has all the expansions... I had only played base Skyrim before so this also made it more worthwhile to drop $60

    Cons
    1. Needs Continuous turning instead of turning by degrees. You will be spamming the turn buttons ALOT. Click click click click...
    2. Should be able to look down and see yourself or at least your hands when weapons aren’t equipped. When magic is equipped you at least see your fists, how come if I have melee weapons equipped I have to see a mock up of the move controllers instead of my hands?? Kills the immersion.
    3. Melee combat is really a bit on the wonky side. There are often times when I am in melee range of the enemy who is hitting me, but for some reason I am too far away to hit them back? And visually it looks like my weapon is hitting but it isn’t.
    4. Movement scheme is decent but has issues... the point to move with the left controller feels the best for moving but if you are doing that you can’t also aim spells with left handZ. You can get around this with shield or bow. The addition of an”backpedal” button would have helped this tremendously.
    5. Stereo sound seems to be nonexistent or super weak. Playing counter strike like 20 years ago I could close my eyes and hear exactly where enemies are. How come in 2017 playing a VR game they didnt implement positional sound?

What I mean is I felt more in the moment and took everything in a lot more. I did the Golden Claw quest and it was a lot of fun. I rescued a man that was stuck in a spider's web. I killed the giant spider first. And after the man tried to run away with the Golden Claw I killed him and took it back. I then killed this Overlord and took his sword as my own. Looking at the map is cool in VR and same for the skill tree. My only complaint is that you can't kill everyone in the game. It hurts the overall immersion. I could see people giving this game a 9 or 10 if they played it on a PS4 Pro or on PC. Expand

After clocking in about 30 hours of gameplay, I can safely conclude that Skyrim VR is the best virtual-reality experience I have had thus far. I do have a few criticisms, but they pale in comparison to the massive achievement Bethesda has accomplished in not only porting this relatively old game over to a VR headset, but also developing dramatically new ways to play a classic RPG.
    Positives (+):
-Very fun usage of the PS Move controllers (highly recommended for the full experience), including realistic archery mechanics, shooting spells out of your hands in multiple directions, and fun sword/shield combat.
-Sense of scale: cities, mountains, dragons, etc. tower over you and give a strong sense of immersion; the draw distance seems to be preserved well enough to also give you sweeping views
-Immersive details: dust settling indoors, butterflys, moths, seeds falling from trees, bugs crawling on the ground are some of the many details I simply never noticed while playing for hundreds of hours on the consoles
-Great range of options: I appreciated how many settings there were for those who experience nausea, and also including both Move and Ds4 support for different playstyles
-Smooth 60fps, relatively short load times
-An already great game with all DLC; if you enjoy it, Skyrim VR is the reason to get a PSVR as you can play this for years and not run out of quests to complete or locations to explore.

    Negatives (-):
-Low resolution: this is mostly a hardware limitation, and I was also playing on an OG PS4, but the graphics still take a major hit; those who prefer maximized graphics and visual fidelity may be disappointed if you cannot look past this.
-Sound: the sound has a poor 3D effect. Not bad, but just nothing impressive; I really think Bethesda could have spent more time on this.
-Combat, while fun, can get wonky: this is mostly in regards to melee weapons; the hit detection seems off and can break the immersion at times.
-Appearance of Move controllers in-game: when you have your weapons sheathed, the move controllers appear on screen instead of your hands. While I understand we need to see the buttons, it can be immersion-breaking.

Overall: phenomenal VR adaptation of an already-great game, hampered only by a few minor criticisms. If you love RPGs and are on the fence about buying a PSVR, I highly recommend picking one up along with Skryim VR.

Expand

Once you're in the game and immersed in the world, the lower graphics quickly melt away to an excellent immersive experience! I have at least 80 hours (probably much more) into the game and I'm still getting blown away by the beauty of the world. The controls are a bit weird to get accustomed to at first with the move controllers. However once you get them down, movement is very intuitive and becomes second nature. This took around 3 to 4 hours of play time for me.

Using weapons is pretty fun. Bow and arrow, once you get it down, is really satisfying and you end up feeling as though you're actually shooting one. The best weapons so far though are the werewolf pimp slap claws. It's extremely fun running around and a werewolf and pimp slapping everyone to death. Casting is also pretty fun, but I still prefer weapon and the werewolf pimp slap.

The only real drawback to the game for me are the menus. They were a bit clumsy, even when you get accustomed to the moves. That said, I'm not sure what the best way to implement them to be more fluid would have been. There are a lot of menu and sub menu items in the game. Other games in PSVR seem to not have nearly as many issues, though many don't have the sheer amount of menu items. It would have maybe helped in things like enchanting or alchemy to be able to select to make something more than once instead of having to select all the items again and again.

Overall it is deeply immersive and by far one of the longest and largest titles on PSVR. If you have PSVR it is a must own to me.

Don’t get discouraged at first if you’re normally a modded PC Skyrim player used to those ultra hi res textures. This version is truly amazing. Some of the initial textures are a little jarring but play for a few hours and you’ll be in love. Awesome being inside Skyrim in VR! And if you’ve never played Skyrim at all this is definitely worth t then as well.

Resolution could be a little better, but it's rather hardware issue than the game itself. Other than that, perfect game for me, well imported into vr, no motion sickness of any kind, even after hours of gameplay without breaks.

Once I progressed a bit though, and got out into the open world, and changed it to smooth movement, holy man this version is amazing. Areas that just felt boring playing on the original version of Skyrim look incredible.

The VR just takes the world to a whole new level. Even sitting on a stool in a tavern and being able to observe and look around is so immersive.

I'd give this thing a 10 but will only give it a 9 as there are a few kinks I think need to be worked out. On example is the location of the health/magicka bar can be hard to see depending on where you are looking (it's at the bottom of the virtual display, so requires you to look down sometimes to see what your at which can be annoying at times). I also find the level up screen to select perks kind of annoying to navigate.

But if you are a fan of Skyrim and have the VR, highly recommend this as it's a definite game changer and will let you experience the massive world in a whole new light, even if you have played it for hours without VR.

If you are familiar with VR than you know what to expect as far as clarity in the distance (similar to RE7) but there is nothing else like this. I was also a huge fan of Oblivion and Morrowind. I bought Skyrim on the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PS4 Special Edition, and now most recently, on PSVR. I've played through the game more times than I can count, and have likely at some point discovered every bit of content the land of Tamriel has to offer. The first time I ever played Skyrim, I thought, wouldn't this be cool in virtual reality? It took six years to get it, but it is now here, and I can die happy. Having a big name game like Skyrim come to PSVR is groundbreaking for the platform. I hope that it inspires other game devs to bring more content as people are rushing to buy their own PSVR now with the release of this game.

It should first be noted that some people do get a bit of motion sickness playing VR games. I am fortunate in that it does not cause me any issues, but I truly feel for those who experience it. I have read from many others however that it does get better after spending some time building up a tolerance to it. And while I am very sympathetic to those with issues of motion sickness, I feel it is unfair to downvote a game based on that factor as I have noticed some critics doing lately. There are plenty of warnings on all VR games and devices about the possibility and it is just something that you take a chance on when buying in. I encourage people to try VR gaming before investing heavily into it. This should be a lot easier now with so many people buying their own, most everyone should know someone who has one to let them try it out a few times. Start easy, work your way up.

Now that that is out of the way, lets talk about Skyrim and motion sickness. One of the great things about Skyrim is that Bethesda included a ton of setting configurations to help users customize their experience and set comfort settings at a level that works for them. This is great news for those who may experience motion sickness, and also great news for those of us who don't as we can turn off these comfort settings and truly live in our VR world.

Controls have 3 basic options. You have two controller options, DS4 and Move. With move, you have two options, direct movement and teleportation. I personally play with direct movement, but the teleport is handy in a bind to get unstuck or reach an awkward location more easily. I have not used the DS4 controller yet, so I can't comment on that option much, but I will say that the way the move controllers work with direct movement is BRILLIANT. There is a bit of a learning curve to get the hang of it, but I'd say spend 30 minutes playing with it, and by the end of that time, you'll have it mastered, and it is so intuitive at that point.

The game itself, well, it is Skyrim. It includes all DLC which is nice. As I mentioned, I've played Skyrim to the point of completion many times, and while this is still the same game, it still feels fresh. There is just something about actually BEING there, that level of immersion, that words cannot even really do justice. You just have to try it and see. Skyrim is a world full of adventure and discovery. There are many quests that will keep you gaming for hundreds of hours if you really take the time to do it all and discover everything. I clocked 500 hours in my last play through in fact on SE version. The world is mesmerizing in its standard form, but in VR it takes this to a whole new level.

Graphically speaking, it is definitely a step backwards from SE, but you can't really compare a VR game to a non VR game when it comes to graphics. Compared to other VR games, it is in the range of decent. There is some blurring in the distance, and faces aren't clear until you are close, but this does not bother you much after spending some time in game. The level of immersion more than makes up for the graphical quality hit, and you will find yourself not caring so much about the little details you can't see because you are so focused on those you can see. You will find yourself looking at everything more closely than you ever thought possible. You will notice things you never noticed before. As you become more immersed into the game, you don't notice the graphics as much and you just absorb the beauty that is there. The magic of actually being IN Skyrim. You are there. You can touch things. You can manipulate things. With your hands. You'll never imagine yourself playing it any other way. When you cast spells, shouts, and absorb souls, you will FEEL it in a way you never thought possible. It is magical.

You owe it to yourself to give it a try. Take a look. Become the Dovakhiin in a way you perhaps dreamed about, but never thought you might actually be able to do. This is real. VR is here to stay, and Skyrim VR is proof of that.

Join the gaming revolution. Slay the dragon. Buy this game. That's an order. ;)

That said, i think VR is still very limited. Sure, there have been prototypes since the 80s and now it's finally good enough and affordable, but it's obvious there's still a long way to go. The resolution is pretty bad, the field of view a bit limited, and as much as PSVR is the most confirtable peripheral in the market, it's still too big for us to be 100% immersed. Even though, like i said above, VR is insanely immersive!

Back to the review, this is the Skyrim most of us already played (plus the DLCs). The difference is that, for the first time, we play inside that world. The sense of scale and presence is incredible, and seriously, it's impossible to describe via words, pics or videos. The controlls are also amazing, both with the controller and move. For obvious reasons, visually we are playing the 7th generation version of the game to guarantee 90fps, but then again, resolution aside (which is more a hardware limitation), Skyrim never felt this real and immersive!

I'm new to VR, so i'm still a bit worried about VR consequences. I keep reading that people play Skyrim (and other VR games) for 10 hours straight. I try to play for 30 minutes to 1 hour and stop. I don't have much of motion sickness or nausea, but i do feel a bit tired after 1 hour playing any VR game. Again, i'm sure that the resolution doesn't help, so i expect future devices to feel much, much better (Pimax 8k VR anyone???).

Anyway, Skyrim VR is a massive step in gaming in the right direction. It's not the best looking game available, but it's easily the biggest and most complex.

I tried, in fact I deleted after about 2 hours of game play .. had a break and thought, I really must give this another attempt so reinstalled. The overlay of the standard 2D UI at times was near impossible to manage.

Nope, this was not a good experience. I had hopes, maybe too high given the 3D quality of some of the VR Pro items currently available.

The VR experience has to be seen to discover how bad it is ... it is the same disappointment I had after seeing Avatar in 3D and then cringing at the poor fabricated CGI efforts of some "3D" movies released afterwards. The true depth of field is missing .. Skyrim VR looks like it is VR elements pasted over the 2D background.

The best I can say about this is that it is a proof of concept ... grand open world gaming can be done in VR, but it needs better than a reworking of low res graphics badly converted into 3D for me to be excited over this one.

Awesome experience, Move Controllers bring archery and magic to the whole another level of fun.
Watching flat Skyrim and BEING there makes SO MUCH difference, you wouldn't belive.
I've completed it twice, one time on PC when it was released and one time on Xbox360, couple years later. Going there in VR feels like I'm playing an absolutely new game. Graphics are pretty bad, though.

That said, Skyrim VR is just AMAZING. Just think about taking a full world into your living room, the 100+ gameplay hours ( I´ve played four hours in a row, without any dizziness, it just gets so inmersive..) the voices, graphics ( yes, all looks blurry in the distance, but FGS, just go for closer combat) And the dungeons just look as something you have never been into. BTW, that´s the best move controllers implemented game in PSVR I´ve played. I´ll give it a 80. Would be (much) higher if/when Bethesda patches it, specially for PRO users. Expand

This was a really difficult game to score. Being thrust into a vast virtual open world is a pretty amazing experience, for a little while. However, I think this game is a good demonstration that VR will never replace conventional gaming.

For a long time I've felt that immersion was not really what made video games fun, and this confirms it. That's not to say that immersion isn't fun - it definitely is cool to look around and feel the sensation of being dwarfed by huge mountains and massive dragons. I just think that the sacrifice of poor controllability isn't worth it, at least with the current hardware. I mostly played with the move controllers on "smooth movement", which works fairly well but eventually becomes tedious. I found the DS4 controls to be terrible because the character moves in the directions that you are looking when you turn your head, which feels really unnatural and frustrating. I'm willing to bet that a very small group of players will actually attempt to beat this game, but I'd happily be proven wrong.

Overall, I did have a fun time playing this, but after about 6 hours I put the headset away and returned to normal Skyrim, which I feel is the better way to experience this old masterpiece.

Combat in VR with the Move controllers is what VR is all about: you're there, facing countless dangers in front of you and from your back, and you raiser your shield and find an opening and attack, or you run away, go stealthy, aim your bow from afar and get them without they ever seeing you. Or waving powerful spells at giant spiders, draugrs, bandits, wolves, giants, you name it... all details such as books or objects and houses are there from the original game.

locomotion could be initially easier if the Move controllers had analog sticks, but still much thought went into how to make it work and once you get used to it (like in the new intro tutorial area), it's as natural as with analogs

And even as an adult who can recognize all the blatant flaws in the game design, RPG Systems, quests and story etc. At the end of the day it is a great videogame that I used to enjoy playing over and over again.

But over time, my nostalgia blew away to the wind. My cynicism kicked in and I can't play the game now without noting the useless skill trees, the simplistic writing, the stilted character designs and facial animations. Even the quest design, which in an RPG is crucial to the experience, is fundamentally flawed from the ground up. The once lovingly nostalgic "Hey, you, you're finally awake..." line at the beginning, was now a repetitive moniker, symbolizing a played out formula Bethesda had been using for decades.

Skyrim had lost it's magic for me. It's wonder. As you can see, I am not exactly in love with this game anymore.

A couple weeks ago I picked up a PSVR, and a few games, Batman Arkham VR, Star wars Squadrons, Iron Man VR, and Resident Evil 7.

I don't get motion Sickness. Ever. Batman didn't make me sick, (mostly because your just standing around) Star wars Squadrons didn't give me Motion sickness, and keep in mind that squadrons, is very intense, and insanely fast moving game. Iron Man VR was the same, and Resident Evil? Well, let's just say that was an utter nightmare, but in a good way.

Skyrim however was a nightmare in a different way.

At the beginning you are asked to choose your look settings, movement settings and other things. I chose to just move along with a walking pace, no teleporting.

And as soon as I woke up on that carriage, glancing at the nostalgic world I had fallen in and out of love with for so long, I couldn't help but feel...glee...

A childish wonder I haven't felt in so very long. And when the leather-faced stilted dolt sitting across from me said "Hey, you, you're finally awake..." I just smiled like an idiot.

After making a character, being saved by a dragon and running into the tower, the overwhelming sense of nostalgia came over me so quickly. It was magic again, it was fun. The combat sucked but it was still Skyrim.

Then while going through the dungeons of Helgen, around the part where you get the potions from that little room, I felt my head spinning, the ground moving from underneath my feet, my stomach doing backflips. I just wanted to rip off the headset and lay down. But I'm not a quitter, it wouldn't be fair for me to judge this kind of game based on it's gameplay without actually playing it for two hours.

So I switched it to the teleportation mode and that helped a bit, I also opted to sit down for the rest of my playthrough, but it didn't help much, by the time I fought the giant spiders, I had been feeling miserable.

But then I left the cave and witnessed the blinding light, the mountain housing Bleak Falls Barrow, the running river, the insects polluting some bushes nearby, the gorgeous soundtrack and the sound of the wind blowing right by me, and of course that magnificent dragon that soars over me, roaring it's distinct shouts. This is what Skyrim VR gets right, the world truly is, alive.

But at the end of that playthrough I couldn't even get to Riverwood, the first town in the game you happen upon.

The next week I tried again. And still got sick, I do not know what in the hell causes me to get sick during this game and not a space dogfighting simulation like Squadrons. I think it has to do with the framerate. But anyways, moving on to Whiterun, something horrible happened, the nostalgia went away, the motion sickness went away and was instead replaced by immeasurable Disappointment.

I was disappointed in Skyrim VR. Not just because of the frame rate. But because at the end of the day, it is still Skyrim. Skyrim, this beautiful game with absolutely terrible graphics.

Skyrim, one of the most immersive games ever made, but is still buggy and glitchy to all hell.

Skyrim a world full of a thousand characters that are as deep as a puddle.

Skyrim this confusing, ugly, beautiful, unique mess of a game, is not better in VR.

Some people believe VR is the definitive way to play this game. It is not, it was made as a regular game, and it barely does that right. Please don't get it, please don't try and replay it again. Just live in it, because the definitive way to play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is through nostalgia.

And PSVR does not have a rose tinted glasses setting.

This basically just being Skyrim: Special Edition, it has the same strengths and weaknesses as that game.

However... I'll just put it this way:
You know how some people just like trying to jump their way up the sides of mountains, and you can use that to reach the highest mountaintop before it's opened? I tried that, and perceiving just how high up I was and how loose the footing was was actually making my palms sweat. Adding some real depth perception to these environments is an absolute treat, whether it be the snow falling in the northern mountains, the vast machinations of the Dwemer ruins, or the cavernous glow of Blackreach.

One of the biggest improvements here is just how easy it is to aim*. Most people reviewing this game seem to have chosen to focus on archery as it feels greatly improved, as have I; The arrow literally goes directly towards the center of your vision in whatever direction you face your head towards, which is astoundingly intuitive in it's simplicity, and mixed with the perks of unlocking slow-motion and whatnot, it feels pretty badass, honestly.
*I really MUST note just how much easier it is to simply interact with specific items on shelves! Even just noticing items is easier. Do you have any clue how many times, while playing the original Skyrim, I accidentally picked up things I didn't want and then had to do menu work, dropping stuff? That's practically gone here, and it makes the game so much more fluent and enjoyable.

This isn't to say that you have to choose archery in order to fully enjoy this game, as melee combat can't help but feel more impactful as you move in and out for attacks. Sneaking is much more interesting as you can actually peer out around a corner slightly, which wouldn't have worked the same playing first person in the O.G.

Load times are equivalent to the PS4 Skyrim: Special Edition release.

In terms of graphics... I really think people should take into account that wearing a PSVR headset is akin to stretching PS4 graphics to the resolution of an entire wall. Nothing's going to look as good as it does on a regular-sized TV without an upgrade. That said, while some occasional textures seem vanilla, they're sparse enough to not detract from a thoroughly engaging experience; There's still plenty to gasp in awe at. I mean, seriously, I stared at the skill tree menu for like 5 minutes straight the first time I opened it up.

This is one of the best VR games out right now, and probably for a while, and in my opinion, the truest and most engaging way to experience Skyrim. I'm kind of jealous of anyone who gets to play this game for the first time with this version.

Edit: I'm currently experiencing the Dragonborn DLC for the first time, and I WAS NOT MENTALLY READY TO OPEN THAT BLACK BOOK. WHY AM I SUDDENLY DEALING WITH CTHULHU SPAWN IN A HELLISH ABYSS? I want my mommy...

P.S. I use the standard Dualshock controller, as I don't own a Move.
I prefer standing up when traversing (as it doesn't feel quite right to be sitting down when there's a giant dragon screaming in my face), and sitting down when I handle town-based stuff.

While it's not the best VR game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is the most massive RPG on PSVR, and it's just as addictive as it's always been. Regardless of whether you play the main quests, chase down all of the side content, go hunting, go dungeoneering, be a smith and forge your own weapons, or go wherever you want to go, Skyrim works well enough, and that should be good enough for most players.
