This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

A mediocre arcade racing game that suffers from bad graphics, low texture detail and also cars looks almost better in NFS underground 2.
Too few cars to choose from. The story is a joke told by cheesy cutscenes.

How is that people continue buying Ubisoft games?. The Crew has a terrible story (not that you buy a racing game for its plot), outdated graphics (almost PS2 quality) and a plethora of glitches that will keep you raging for hours.

Please vote with your wallet and stop supporting Ubisoft.

Too many random, uncontrollable events (obstacles/crashes/loss of control/rubber bands) makes progress very slow, difficult, repetitive and frustrating. Graphics are ordinary but gameplay and especially control are worse. Progression and achievement pretty much a spin of the roulette wheel. Tedious, frustrating, not much fun.

What can I even say? The game is just one of those games where you just lose focus. The games physics are awful. It's like driving on the moon. The game lacks a personality as well. The story is very forgetful, I don't even know what's happening most of the time with the story. The game lacks cars as well as most of them are generic same 'seen already in a dozen games' I would avoid this racer.

Let's critically examine what Ubisoft themselves have called "The Crew". They have referred to it as a MMO, open world, competitive racing game. Unfortunately, about the only part of their own assessment that is correct is the "open world" part.

The Crew is not a very good racing game. Car and world physics are atrocious and even after upgrading cars with performance parts players will find their cars sliding all over the road. A slight tap on the wheel or stick will result in either minimal movement or spinning off course, all in the same car with the same parts. AI is frequently "boosted" to foster competitiveness against the player in the campaign so the player's upgrades often feel for naught when an AI left in the dust several miles back suddenly passes the player at Warp Factor 5 to take the win within the last 100 yards.

The Crew is not a good MMO. Let's start with the obvious in that it's not "massively multiplayer" in the slightest. Each part of the world you inhabit has a cap to the number of people that can also be in it. I believe the cap is 8, total, as I never saw more than that in any given area. That's hardly massive and more akin to a large lobby system. Beyond this point, The Crew's "end game" revolves entirely around multiplayer racing. Once the player finishes the story, that's IT from a PVE standpoint. Cap at level 50 and the entire goal of the game is PVP/Faction Wars. Since Ubisoft themselves have referred to the game as an MMO, this comparison is warranted: Imagine World of Warcraft where you play a story mode to get to max level only to find out all end game progression is 100% pvp battlegrounds, rated battlegrounds, and rated arena. The Crew's end game is merely PVP grind hidden behind racing and grindy gameplay alone does not make something a MMO.

The Crew is a not a good competitive racer. Multiplayer is plagued by lag, rubber-banding, and other persistent server issues and it favors players with more money than sense. Perk Points that fundamentally enhance and/or alter player abilities can be bought with real money over and above the finite amount players can earn in-game. Cars in varying tuner classes can also be purchased with real money. Combined with the inherent imbalance the so-called "MMO" elements bring to the table, there's very little competitiveness in the multiplayer racing.. which effectively devalues their ENTIRE "end game" design.

The Crew is not a good looking game. Graphically, it's dated out-of-the-box. Defenders claim this is merely due to the open world nature of the game, to which I cry "BS". They could have done much, much better in this department with the current crop of consoles. Even the PC, while it gets better framerate, suffers these lackluster, cartoonish textures and models.

The only real solid point to The Crew is the open world venue. Driving around in the micro-United States is a fun endeavor in and of itself, but it's one that can be fully accomplished within an hour of two of starting the game. Once you've driven around all the backroads and dirt roads and had your moments of "wow, they put that in?", you're stuck with a game whose core - racing, competitive multiplayer, and MMO or RPG elements - is rotten.

Here's a fast list of everything you expect for a game and it fails on.
    - AI... Is complete garbage, they don't actually race or even follow the rules they will rubber band up to 260mph to catch up along with the fact if you wipe out, you lose and if they wipe out they're back in the race in 2 seconds. [1/10]

    - Graphics... I really love the fact that they copied most of the U.S and made it realistic however since this is a racing game and there's only around 4 type of NPC cars and 23 drivable cars by the player its a joke. Even JC2 had more car models and it wasn't a racing game and had better foliage. [5/10]

    - Multiplayer... It doesn't exist unless you manually port forward, and lets say you do manually port forward for a "mmo". You'll be stuck with maximum number of 7 other random people which you will never play with due to everyone being on a different mission or the fact PvP lobbys take over 10 minutes to join most of the time for only 4 people. [1/10 is this 2002?]

    - Plot... It's a racing game which they felt the need to add a plot which is one you've seen play out hundreds of times its boring and repetitive and nothing new. [4/10]

    - Physics and handling... Yeah this is the worst game I've ever seen within the last 4 years of physics of games that simple even a brand new indie gamer could import a physX engine and call there game a masterpiece compared to this. Hit a car at 200mph? Dead stop no crash or anything. Hit the ground from 60ft in the air? Do a single bounce. Do a ramming mission and ram the other guy over? His car just flips back over at the end of the cut-scene. Ram full speed into a curved protector? Keep the speed and instantly change directions. [1/10 they at-least added basic collision detection for models... right?]

Overall I wouldn't buy this game unless you want to say to your friends as a story "this one time I bought a game from Ubisoft/Ivory Tower for racing for $60 biggest joke of my life that's why I don't buy from them anymore".

The driving in The Crew is derpy the car bounces around off random bumps in the road or offroad causing me and other players just to spin out crashing into each other resulting in lost time on most Co op missions then restarting it, many times. It tries to blend a sort of realistic racer with arcade type driving and it's does not work that well.

Graphics don't really affect my buying of games as long as it has great story, characters and gameplay but this has none of the above.

Story did surprise me as I did not think the crew had one, but it is nothing special or unique.

There are micro transactions. You can buy your way to have the best cars pretty much from the get go, but most of the games car classes are restricted by level so you are going to have to actual play through to get them all, if you can manage it without becoming bored.

The map is pretty huge with is my only positive point.

To conclude, if you want an open world racer where you can play with friends Forza Horizon 2 is probably the best thing out right now for XB1 and there is Drive club for PS4 there is also Need for Speed Rivals if you want the cop vs racer game, all are leagues better than The Crew.

Don't trust the 10 score you see around. It's an outdated product. Poor graphics. Amateur game play/physics. Overwhelming/redundant information on screen. Graphically, this is not next gen game. The Crew is on par with last gen driving games.

Hmmm this seems like another flop by Ubisoft. After the colossal disappointments in Unity, Rogue, Watch Dogs, and more, I think they should probably refocus on making games better and dial back on the marketing (looking at you Dan's gaming). Or maybe stick to churning out 5 Tom Clancy games per year. Whatever works I guess.

As for me, I'll just stick to GT and Forza, thanks.

The Crew could have been a really great open world driving game...

Until someone decided to just wing it and not actually learn how vehicles handle in real life at all.

Or when someone decided to implement a false sense of challenge by having every single AI vehicle drive around the same level as yours if not better. This also includes the police.

"Car levels" should be renamed "e-peen" levels since your car level and its stats don't actually make a marginal difference in any way. You could be 100 car levels over the recommendation for a race and be 100 levels over the cars in it... And you'll always get that one car that's somehow faster than yours. It gets to the point where there is no point to the "back on track" function since if you make a single mistake in a race you aren't going to win since the guy in second place is almost always right behind you. The only exception to this is if you drive dirty and try to put him into a wall to slow him down long enough to get a big enough lead to give yourself an advantage. If you've taken the time to get better parts for your car and are a good driver that should make a difference. Someone at the developer decided it shouldn't.

Takedowns are the worst. YOU have to hit THEM to do any kind of damage to their "health bar". If they hit you they don't take any damage to their health. If you hit them and put them into a wall they take damage from you but not from hitting the wall.

It's as if no one play tested this game. Or if anyone did and though it was a good game they have a twisted idea of what "fun" is. This game is less fun than Dark Souls due to the unfair nature of it's difficulty. Even Dark Souls gives you a fighting chance if you have the right level of skill. Not to mention the core gameplay in Dark Souls won't see you magnetized directly into every vehicle and object you can hit or literally spawn traffic right in front of you to run into and destroy your chances of winning the race.

The graphics also look like middle era PS3 graphics. Even on PS4.

This game could have been good if they'd had a different group of people making decisions about what would make the game "fun".

I give it a score of 1 because I did have SOME fun with it. But not enough to avoid getting rid of it less than a week after purchase. Shame is Ubisoft finally fixed an error that was causing a lot of people not to get their preorder DLC.

In this gargantuan rendition of America – in all its glory I might add – you’ll be marvelling at the often beautiful backdrops you’re thundering through as you race towards your destination or next objective in one moment while scornfully chastising yourself for throwing away an hour of your life after getting screwed over by the game’s questionable racing mechanics in another. As a purely technical feat The Crew is an incredible success but as an enjoyable video game it is far less accomplished.

As I alluded to above, one of the greatest things about The Crew is the ability to spend your time travelling across an exceptionally well-translated version of the real-life United States of America. At the start of the game you’ll be racing through the streets of Detroit and as you work your way towards level fifty you’ll start exploring more and more of the world. The Crew’s interpretation of America is understandably a more condensed one than the actual thing, divided into five regions: the West Coast, East Coast, Mountain States, The South, and The Midwest. You’ll race your way across each of these five unique regions across the surprisingly long main campaign, seeing a large chunk of what The Crew’s world has to offer. Even so, though, you’ll still have a large portion of the map shaded in once you finally reach the final story mission; players who love exploring will have no shortage of locales to visit here. What is someone disappointing however is the lack of detail which persists across the entire world. For one thing The Crew’s America isn’t exactly a pretty one, certainly not to the standards of recent video games such as Grand Theft Auto V’s San Andreas and, more notably, Forza Horizon 2’s Southern Europe. Sure, there are shop names and pedestrians, famous city monuments such as the Space Needle in Seattle and the Willis Tower in Chicago, and other nice little touches like litter blowing around the place in cities and tumbleweeds doing their thing in the game’s rural locales. What’s missing however is the kind of pain-staking attention-to-detail seen in other recent releases like those mentioned earlier. In other words, there’s an unfortunate similarity between the streets of San Francisco and Miami. Along similar lines, The Crew’s world often feels desolate with few cars and pedestrians in sight. This makes sense in some places – like the Bonneville Salt Flats or the desert surrounding Las Vegas – but seems substantially less fitting in Downtown Los Angeles at five o’clock in the afternoon. The Crew’s world is one that looks like something from three years ago but is the size of one that exists in the future; it is a testimony to the sophisticated technology the game industry has at its disposal right now.

The Crew’s world is perhaps the only substantial thing I can find to praise about this troubled game. One of its many failings is its poorly crafted story. This is not to say that it’s a bad story, it’s just a really generic one and one that isn’t particularly engaging. I’d be willing to bet that The Crew’s developers are probably aware of this very fact; in fact, I think I remember seeing an interview in which the game director acknowledged the lack of creative flare in the narrative. The Crew sees the protagonist, Alex, set off on a cross-country journey to bring justice to Coburn and Shiv, the game’s two antagonists who killed Alex’s brother Dayton. To do this Alex must rise through the ranks of his brother’s organisation – the 5-10’s – by competing in a ridiculous number of races and challenges. As you can probably tell, this is the same kind of brother-out-for-revenge type of story we’ve seen many times before in the racing genre. The story doesn’t progress terribly well either; a brief piece of exposition is delivered to the player as he or she begins each mission. Usually this exposition is significantly lacking in detail or abhorrently ludicrous. Cut-scenes too are fairly stock-standard affairs like the type we saw in Just Cause 2; Alex drives up in some kind of car and either does some cool stuff in front of the camera as he makes his way to the starting line or hops out and walks to the car he needs to use for the mission. It’s not exactly this most gripping of pre-mission cinematics. The Crew’s story certainly isn’t the game’s strong suit but at least a weak narrative is something we’ve come to expect from the genre.
The Crew’s greatest failing is that it doesn’t deliver on the promise of a great racing experience. For starters the game’s handling model is absolutely ridiculous; full-lock feels nothing close to what it should be and it is near impossible to make cars drift. As such, cars in The Crew seems to have a mind of their own and will appear to disobey your commands in crucial moments. It’s the kind of system where if you can feel

Great Map. Drive was fun. But, very Poor Level Design. Above all, story mission was boring. That was monotonous driver work. The Crew was a letdown. That's a bummer.

You can also be in races with other people but they don’t have to be your friend, you can get special cars and motorbikes but you will have to pay for them with real money. You can add weapons to your cars like an EMP to stop the police from arresting you, the cars and motorbikes can have boost on them which will make the car or motorbike go faster for a small amount of time. I think the best car in the game is the Lamborghini Huracan, I think the best place to drive my cars is the motorways because I can go as fast as I want without having to stop or slow down because of traffic. If you are looking for a fun racing game. This is NOT for you. Some of the beginning races are all but impossible to do solo. The AI rubber banding is worse than any other driving game I have played. A simple google search for select missions in this game and it isn’t hard to see why the scores are so low. Very disappointed in this game and as a result I will not be purchasing The Crew 2.

    negative points :

    - not a MMO

This game was marketed with amazing car customization and from the marketing they you could choose the spec for your car (dirt, raid, circuit, street, performance) and it seemed like you could pretty much have an off-road Lamborghini but in actuality a lot of the cars that you would want to have a certain spec don't.
The storyline in this game is absolutely bland and horrible with nothing interesting about it.
Ok so a racing game is all about the racing so the driving has to be good right? Well this games isn't, the cars feel off and it doesn't feel good to drive the cars in game.

Overall this game sucks you might want to buy it if you see it for about $5, spend any more than that on this boring piece of crap and you're insane.
(Plus at some point they will probably stop supporting this game's servers and this game will be literally un playable since its online only)

Graphics look great. The physics are impossible. The game has impossible challenges and a weird sense of humor. You also have to get 1st place in every event in order to advance, which takes a lot of the joy out of the game. You can't just race and enjoy it, you have to win every time.

The loading times takes ages, you always have to be online and the music is irritating. Got the game for Christmas 2015, the whole servers crashed. Played it for 2 hours trying to do the bloody mission, left it alone, then played another 3 today because I saw a road trip video and I was inspired.

The Crew can be enjoyable for some casual cross-country joy rides, especially if you have some friends to drive along. However, it comes up entirely short of most of its goals, and makes a wreck of car handling and competition for the sake of lackluster MMO mechanics.

While moments of genuine beauty exist, they occur in the context of a game that otherwise simply cannot compete with its contemporaries when it comes to visual presentation - a symptom, perhaps, of the seven-year development cycle. [Feb 2015, p.104]
