Never trust the '10s'. They are employees of the publisher reviewing their own game. The game was deliberately held from reviewers till after release and the User Reviews pumped full of 10/10 reviews to trick you into thinking this is a good game. it's not. It's average at best and the publisher shouldn't get a dime of your money for the sneaky way they treat consumers.

After playing the beta and now the full release, I can safely say that The Crew, while far from a perfect game, is definitely worth a play if you are any kind of fan of the NFS Underground series or Forza Horizon series. Why? Because this game is essentially the best of both of those games in one package.

While I'd love to see a true sequel to NFS Underground 2, I fear that something of that caliber will never come to light. Instead, we have The Crew. This isn't a bad thing, per se, as The Crew definitely pulls ideas from the street racing games of yesteryear, but you can see just from the sheer scope of the design of The Crew where things could have been tightened. This is just my opinion, however, as like I said before, I wish there were a true NFS: UG sequel.

First of all, the customization is amazing. Think UG 2 x100. From paint jobs, to livery, to body kits, to neon, to wheels, to even the interior of the car. Almost everything can be tweaked or changed to your liking. The big question I get asked is "do all of these mods affect stats"? Well, yes and no. Rigging your 350z with big knob tires and rally gear will get you better handling off-road, but smaller nuances like changing the sideskirts will not net you additional downforce points. This is definitely an "arcade" style racing game and therefor you should not expect the level of tuning detail you would find in say Forza 5. Much like Horizon, the game is about the open road and in this case multiplayer. It is called "The Crew" after all, and the name wouldn't tailor much to the genre if it didn't have something to do with being a part of something bigger.

Multiplayer is seamless and is surprisingly stable at launch. Running missions or races with friends is as easy as the click of a button. I haven't experienced any detrimental lag thus far, either. I do recommend playing this game with friends, however. It makes the experience much more enjoyable than romping around with strangers. Although playing with randies does have its moments.

Now there is a story here, and much like Horizon it sort of takes a back seat. It basically just gives you a backdrop and a reason to be in this world. It is pretty run of the mill fast and furious-y, but it does its job. But if you buy racing games for the story then you're probably in it for the wrong reasons. The main pull of The Crew is its MMO-like appeal with a LARGE and I mean LARGE open world. Let's put it this way, it took me a solid half an hour to drive from Detroit to Seattle in real-time. That's big. And yes, those are real cities you can race in and around and to-and-from. And man does it feel good.

The sense of speed is spot on in this game. And that, for me, is a huge factor in how well I enjoy a racing game. If I'm going 100mph I want it too look and feel like I'm going that fast. The graphics, while impressive at times, do suffer from a slightly low-fi look at times. I imagine this is because of the sheer size of the world. Your car will always be in the spotlight and will always look the best, however. So don't worry about that. I can forgive slightly muddy textures in the environment as long as my car and all of my customization looks good.

All in all, if you enjoy racing games and the appeal of a wide-open country world with friends to road-trip and race with, I would highly recommend The Crew. Especially if you're a fan of the NFS UG or Forza Horizon series.

How is that people continue buying Ubisoft games?. The Crew has a terrible story (not that you buy a racing game for its plot), outdated graphics (almost PS2 quality) and a plethora of glitches that will keep you raging for hours.

It's unfortunate to see that so many people rate games as if they were mentally challenged. It would also help if people only review a game they actually own, because if they did they wouldn't be talking about "PS2 graphics". No, the graphics are not groundbreaking but the cars and their direct environment look good, stuff that's a bit further away might look a bit less impressive (I wouldn't know I don't pay much attention to it) but it's not bad up to a point where I actually notice and get bother about it. All in all, graphics are fine, I've seen much much much worse.

Gameplay: I know a lot of people that were excited about this game but then cancelled their pre-orders cause of the though (some would use the word poor) handling they experienced in the beta... problem is that the handling at the start of the game isn't that great but it does get a lot better once you progress. Later in the game when you get performance and circuit spec and some perks from the HQ, the handling really does get a lot better.

The story: I don't understand the comments on this... ok, it's a thin plot, who cares? It's a video game, a race game even, not a goddamn movie. In fact this plot is no worse than that of your average Fast & Furious movie, I bet half of the people complaining will probably be raving over the next installment from that series...

All in all I think this is quite a good game. It's a fantastic concept, the map is huge, there's large amount of collectibles to keep you busy. It's just a shame the game lacks a bit of polishing and there's some annoying bugs and glitches (getting stuck on loading screen, black screens, crew members going invisible...) which do cause a lot of frustration.

Considering the massive amount of arcade racing titles currently on PS4 (yes, this is sarcasm) this is imo just a must have for any fan of the genre. For those of you who played Test Drive Unlimited 2 and liked it, you're gonna have a lot of fun playing this one.

"But the it's supposed to feel arcade-like", this comment i would agree with, but however the cars seem boat-like and unresponsive, although its not bad to a level where the game becomes unplayable. The game though does have some redeeming features, The upgrade system for example, when completing certain missions you can unlock a part for your car, and you can automatically fit this to your vehicle without the need of visiting a garage. The fast travel option can also be a life saver, or at least a time saver. I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a racing game on the ps4, but only as there are not many great ones out there at the moment, it might be money better spent buying GTA however, if you are looking for a purely multiplayer racing game, although the cars might not be liscenced, they handle better and the map design is a lot greater. Ok bad news first. You have to be online and signed into psn to play this. This basicly means that you will need to pay the psn annual fee to play this game, even if you had no plans of playing an on-line session, you still have to be online to even get past the title screen!. This is a major turn off for a lot of people. Imagation my furstation when my wifi dropped off in the first mission of the game and I was kicked back to the title screen and I had to reset my routor and restart the whole game. Also the game and your system needs to be fully updated and if psn goes down you can't play your game. Unforuntaly this can not be changed so we will just have to see how this goes. Also I found in the early part o fthe game, right after you pick your first car and you are free to go whereever you want that you can not intract with all online players and that with the ones you can you have very limited opations. I expect that I would have to get further in the game before I can race other player online, but if everyone is forced to go online from the start why are there holding back some of the functions?

The next bad thing about the game is some of the graphics and story elements. Ok off the bat the story sucks, and you know it is going to suck when the game gives you the opation to skip cut scences the first time around. The story is a throw away plot that makes no sense really and the missions are so basic there are silly. I don't think you would buy this game for it's story though, I got it for the cars and experincing the open world. Now the grpahics are basiclly hit and miss some places are good and other bits of the world ie part of cites look like ps2, boring lifeless spaces. Also the other AI cars on the road do not act realist at all, for example I was driving at my maxium speed on a staright part of a city and the ai pick up truck was driving faster then me! Ai cars sometimes crash into each other and just sit there, nobody gets out and I bet those cars would just disappear when I drive a certian distance away. Also I found that trains can drive staright thought concreate blocks put there to stop you from driving in certain parts but if this is a ture open world I want to drive everywhere.

THe last bad point that people have brough up is that in the game you can buy all the best cars and level yourself up to the max level for something like £50. first why would anyone do that after you just spent the same amount on the game and secondly you can get all that stuff if you just pay though the game. ok that is the bad stuff now for the good stuff.

The best thing about the game is the open world, aprt from some of the blad graphices I talked about, THe opne world is bloody massive! For example I was drive for about an hour yeserday away from detroit just following roads and when I looked at the world map I had handly driven anywhere. The map cover most of the USA. I belive that a few states are missing but for the most part it is all there incudling all the important land marks. Plus you will probaly find some you didn;t know about. For exmaple I was driving around somewhere near the detroit cost line and I found a theme park!

The cars in the game look real and I like the customiation that is possible that is a good selection and the races I tried where fun if not a bit too easy. It is fun driing around and the little mini games on the road are good.

I like the rpg elements but I am worried that when I max out I am going to be bored again and I am also worried that the dev team behind this game will not support it for ever as the review so far have not been good.

In sumamry I would like a crew 2 game sooner reather then later and the one feature that I would like to see is OFFLINE single player. The crew 2 is a good game just be prepared to work with it's floors

For starters, the graphics are far from Next-Gen, and I mean really far, which is a major let down in any driving game.

Secondly, the so called "crew" is completely broken. It's limited to 4 players (who will often leave the crew or be forced out by random bugs), so you'll spend 90% of your time alone. This makes it only mildly interesting if you play with friends. But, above all, being in a crew doesn't really adds anything of value to the game. It's not like you can go on special missions with your crew members or anything (like the trailers led us to believe). It's just the same boring missions but with more cars on them.

The story is boring, missions are repetitive (chasing down a guy, smashing boxes, race against time) and multiplayer is nothing to lose your sleep over. Not a shred of innovation.

Cars, well, car customization is acceptable, but the original release didn't have many cars to choose from. Now they are adding some cars periodically, but you have to pay for them. Cars physics is also something that could be better, as well as the signs of damage in your car (which will be reset after a short while).

The best thing about this game is the variety of skills available, these sorts of short challenges that will award you a better car part. It also has many hidden things that encourage exploration. For PS4 it's not a bad title, since by the time of its release we didn't have many car games to choose from; but for XBox it's not worthwhile.

Early on in the game the missions are fun and challenging.
However as you level up and improve, the poor driving physics become more and more annoying. I realise its an arcade racer and wasn't expecting Gran Turismo levels of realistic handling but as your cars get faster they are horrible to drive and very irritating. Although i will say that the dirt and raid races actually are pretty good.
The graphics aren't as good as i would expect from a PS4 game. They feel like something straight out of last gen. Not terrible but not amazing.
The A.I. feel like they are attached to you with an elastic band. No matter how far ahead you get there is always someone right behind you and don't get me started on the cops.
Some of the missions seem like you are set up to fail, such as one where you have to take down a bus and no matter how fast you are going its going the same speed or faster meaning you can't catch it at certain points.
I found the upgrading of your cars overly confusing and i would rather have been able to buy parts as an when i needed them rather than doing skills but i think its been setup that way to help push the micro tramsactions (which is obvious when you realise how little cash you get from missions)
The story is your typical undercover cop trope but i actually found it enjoyable.

It had so much promise and could have been a great game without all these niggles but once i finish the story mode I don't think i would go back and play it again.

It has filled a gap though as the lack of racers on PS4 is shocking.

What don't I like? Well - the world just feels... cheap. I cannot get past how poor the graphics look for a new gen game, it just cannot compare to the likes of Forza Horizon 2 (another open world driving game, though admittedly a lot smaller). I can forgive that though if it had good handling mechanics - but it just feels off and weird.. hitting other cars and walls feels like you're a bowling ball being thrown down an isle with padded barriers on the side - You just keep bouncing off everything! And the cars just feel.... weird.

Whilst the world is huge, it feels empty - for an online game I only ever ran into a few people (i think the max is 7) and I experienced a lot of drops when trying to play with other racers in events. For a world so large - it really needs a load more online players roaming around.

What do I like? The world size... it is massive and I truly appreciate that. The cars sound good for a non sim game and I enjoy the customisation, it runs very deep. There is also a pretty good selection of cars, although it is small by comparison to other games. And I really like some of the small details when you go into new cities or territories - for example the taxi's change their livery / style - it's a nice touch.

But I keep coming back to it just feels off and a bit boring.... maybe it will grow on me, but for now it really doesn't feel like a great game worthy of paying full-price.

Many people are calling the game out on its graphics, well the game is huge with tons of activity going on constantly so I would argue that the graphics are an achievement, when all is considered. The story is intriguing, but I don't believe that is the selling point of this game. The selling point is racing with friends, your crew, engaging in multiplayer races, exploring, going off road, driving on the freeway and taking any damn exit you want. Sure there are a lot of negative reviews, because all of the people enjoying the game are too busy to take time away to write a review. There is so much to do in this game I have no idea how anyone can complain about a lack of content. I'm not thrilled by the microtransactions, but that seems to be the norm. Expand

Let's critically examine what Ubisoft themselves have called "The Crew". They have referred to it as a MMO, open world, competitive racing game. Unfortunately, about the only part of their own assessment that is correct is the "open world" part.

The Crew is not a very good racing game. Car and world physics are atrocious and even after upgrading cars with performance parts players will find their cars sliding all over the road. A slight tap on the wheel or stick will result in either minimal movement or spinning off course, all in the same car with the same parts. AI is frequently "boosted" to foster competitiveness against the player in the campaign so the player's upgrades often feel for naught when an AI left in the dust several miles back suddenly passes the player at Warp Factor 5 to take the win within the last 100 yards.

The Crew is not a good MMO. Let's start with the obvious in that it's not "massively multiplayer" in the slightest. Each part of the world you inhabit has a cap to the number of people that can also be in it. I believe the cap is 8, total, as I never saw more than that in any given area. That's hardly massive and more akin to a large lobby system. Beyond this point, The Crew's "end game" revolves entirely around multiplayer racing. Once the player finishes the story, that's IT from a PVE standpoint. Cap at level 50 and the entire goal of the game is PVP/Faction Wars. Since Ubisoft themselves have referred to the game as an MMO, this comparison is warranted: Imagine World of Warcraft where you play a story mode to get to max level only to find out all end game progression is 100% pvp battlegrounds, rated battlegrounds, and rated arena. The Crew's end game is merely PVP grind hidden behind racing and grindy gameplay alone does not make something a MMO.

The Crew is a not a good competitive racer. Multiplayer is plagued by lag, rubber-banding, and other persistent server issues and it favors players with more money than sense. Perk Points that fundamentally enhance and/or alter player abilities can be bought with real money over and above the finite amount players can earn in-game. Cars in varying tuner classes can also be purchased with real money. Combined with the inherent imbalance the so-called "MMO" elements bring to the table, there's very little competitiveness in the multiplayer racing.. which effectively devalues their ENTIRE "end game" design.

The Crew is not a good looking game. Graphically, it's dated out-of-the-box. Defenders claim this is merely due to the open world nature of the game, to which I cry "BS". They could have done much, much better in this department with the current crop of consoles. Even the PC, while it gets better framerate, suffers these lackluster, cartoonish textures and models.

The only real solid point to The Crew is the open world venue. Driving around in the micro-United States is a fun endeavor in and of itself, but it's one that can be fully accomplished within an hour of two of starting the game. Once you've driven around all the backroads and dirt roads and had your moments of "wow, they put that in?", you're stuck with a game whose core - racing, competitive multiplayer, and MMO or RPG elements - is rotten.

Performance is also impressive, I get 60fps at 4k with all on maximum (excluding txaa) using 2 gtx 970's and I have not come across anything in the way of game breaking bugs.

Gameplay however can be hit and miss, the format is fairly standard for an open world racer with various points on the map having events of different types to compete in and when starting an event you can select coop and the game will attempt to find another player in the area to join with you, however the game does a poor job of explaining some of the gameplay mechanics as it throws information at you too fast and in a confusing manner.
For a game called 'the crew' I do think the interactions with other players could have been expanded greatly - often the world can feel empty and the need for another player to join you unnecessary although if you have a large group of friends to play with it could potentially be a lot more fun
    .
More disappointments come from the car handling, which is universally bad - they have gone for a very arcade like feel and the end result is that cornering and handling is unsatisfying and the vehicles lack weight - you won't be pulling off powerslides and tight cornering here.
Following on from this the AI is fairly poor, often a mission can seem impossibly hard and you beat it with luck as opposed to skill and the police are not enjoyable to escape from.

It is not by any means unplayable but it could have been a lot better, it is a shame such a nicely made world is let down by the driving aspects. But if you need something to fill the gap left by lack of a need for speed game this year, you could do a lot worse.

    - Graphics... I really love the fact that they copied most of the U.S and made it realistic however since this is a racing game and there's only around 4 type of NPC cars and 23 drivable cars by the player its a joke. Even JC2 had more car models and it wasn't a racing game and had better foliage. [5/10]

    - Multiplayer... It doesn't exist unless you manually port forward, and lets say you do manually port forward for a "mmo". You'll be stuck with maximum number of 7 other random people which you will never play with due to everyone being on a different mission or the fact PvP lobbys take over 10 minutes to join most of the time for only 4 people. [1/10 is this 2002?]

    - Plot... It's a racing game which they felt the need to add a plot which is one you've seen play out hundreds of times its boring and repetitive and nothing new. [4/10]

    - Physics and handling... Yeah this is the worst game I've ever seen within the last 4 years of physics of games that simple even a brand new indie gamer could import a physX engine and call there game a masterpiece compared to this. Hit a car at 200mph? Dead stop no crash or anything. Hit the ground from 60ft in the air? Do a single bounce. Do a ramming mission and ram the other guy over? His car just flips back over at the end of the cut-scene. Ram full speed into a curved protector? Keep the speed and instantly change directions. [1/10 they at-least added basic collision detection for models... right?]

Overall I wouldn't buy this game unless you want to say to your friends as a story "this one time I bought a game from Ubisoft/Ivory Tower for racing for $60 biggest joke of my life that's why I don't buy from them anymore".

The driving in The Crew is derpy the car bounces around off random bumps in the road or offroad causing me and other players just to spin out crashing into each other resulting in lost time on most Co op missions then restarting it, many times. It tries to blend a sort of realistic racer with arcade type driving and it's does not work that well.

Graphics don't really affect my buying of games as long as it has great story, characters and gameplay but this has none of the above.

Story did surprise me as I did not think the crew had one, but it is nothing special or unique.

There are micro transactions. You can buy your way to have the best cars pretty much from the get go, but most of the games car classes are restricted by level so you are going to have to actual play through to get them all, if you can manage it without becoming bored.

The map is pretty huge with is my only positive point.

To conclude, if you want an open world racer where you can play with friends Forza Horizon 2 is probably the best thing out right now for XB1 and there is Drive club for PS4 there is also Need for Speed Rivals if you want the cop vs racer game, all are leagues better than The Crew.

Yes, there is some bugs and problems with servers, but they're fixable and not critical. The world is really huge, the graphics are nice (not next-gen, but still). I really enjoy travelling between states, using cockpit view, watching beautiful landscapes around me. The physics are normal for arcade racing and I don't understand people who are saying that it's awful. Compare it to the physics of NFS MW 2012, for example. This is REALLY awful physics. Moreover, here is a huge amount of customization options, which reminds me the times of NFS Underground 2. Of course, there is some cons, too. For example, you can't start your career once again, from the beginning, and it's really annoying. Maybe the Ivory Tower will release a patch with such opportunity in the future (I hope so). The storyline is weak, but it's not so important in racing game. Don't get me wrong, The Crew isn't perfect, as I said before. But on the other hand it's a huge step forward in comparison with other racing arcades. Give it a chance, don't bury it alive, or for the next decade we will be "enjoying" crap like NFS Rivals. Didn't catch the story as I played only a fraction but I'm sure it's a cliche. It takes way too much time to enter and exit the map (loading). I'm so sorry I got it as a gift, planning to give it away asap.

Way to difficult. You can't progress until you complete specific missions which are really really hard. This game is not fun it's a frustrating mess. If you like doing the same thing over and over again then this might be for you but my second hand copy is about to become third hand.

First of all the game does look good, unlike some people is commenting at YT or other forums, technically this game is just incredible. The level of detail in every US location is just outstanding. And im not talking about little things, the entire map has almost totally different structures, buildings, houses, shops, cemetery, statues, actually everything you can find in a real city. But that does not stops there, the level of detail goes to another level when you are in a speedway and you just want to go to the left o right to reach some field, you go further and you realize there is stuff even locations or structures with life on it, incredible detailed does not matter what part of the map you are discovering, there is stuff there and not repeated stuff, all that with pretty amazing texture quality , which is actually impressive for such open world size.

There is people everywhere as well, a lot of cars, believe me there is a lot of cars everywhere, that makes every location with a lot of life on it.

Ambience is another plus here, the sky changes dramatically depending the ToD ( Time of the Day ) and sometimes you see amazing skies. Night looks wonderful with the lights and lightning, day looks just wonderful.

The gameplay is fixed from the beta, driving has been tuned and now it feels amazing, when you level up driving feels even more amazing. Customization is perfect, you can customize your car to the max. If you are a NFS undeground fan , you can do that and more. Co-op gameplay is fun. Thats it, fun and a lot. Does not matter who you play with. The story in the game is actually pretty good, it makes you play it more and more since its actually a good one.

For me this game deserves a 9/10. And i give it a 9 just because car renders are not as good as the rest. Excellent game.

I am a simulator racer and this is the first arcade racer I've enjoyed since I can remember.

Think Forza Horizon campaign co-op in an MMO world with more variety traded in for poorer visuals and loose handling.
P.S Competitive racers out there will have an advantage using the hardcore setting (0 assists) same as simulator racers.

some people are really negative for no reason. maybe they are the type of people who don't even bother to look at their settings. maybe their pc is half a decade old. maybe they expected a different game from what it really is.

I expected a game not as realistic or hardcore as a real sim. slightly more arcadey than forza and that is exactly what I got. (to clarify, forza is one of the more relaxed racing sims I know handling wise)

I have played the crew with a xbox360 controller, a Thrustmaster Run'n'Drive and a Logitech Momo force feedback racing wheel. the handling feels pretty good on hardcore. as with any game I had to mess with the settings a bit to get it nice feeling, but that is to be expected. Grip and lines are pretty controllable and when you get a feel for it it's pretty easy to recover from a hairy situation.

this game, like any good racing game, requires solid and precise input to be fast. especially with force feedback on dirt or off-road, the car can be quite a handfull. the differences in suspension between the classes are also very noticeable. with force feedback turned up all the way off-road is pretty doable in raid or even dirt, but with harder suspension the wheel will fight you for control on bumps and jumps. on the other hand, a raid spec will often understeer and lift one or two wheels when driving hard on road.

The big open world is really awesome. you can drive to a huge amount of places and a cross country or round trip takes a LONG time. In gta 5 i was pretty dissapointed about the lack of tight driving roads on that map. Luckily Ivory Tower did not make the same mistake. the game is filled to the brim with not only highways and country roads, but also big mountain passes. Be it dirt, snow, or blacktop, it´s all there.

It´s true the landscape isn´t the prettiest close up, but the quality of the roads and sheer size of the map easily make up for that. the different landscapes like field, forest, desert, mountain, hill, swamp etc. all feel like a world in themselves and seeing the landscape fluently change around you as you drive cross country is really cool. It all looks pristine until you get really close (and slow), so that´s usually a non-issue.

the first few days there were some connectivity issues but they have significantly lessened after they did a few server patches. I hope they will keep this up and keep their promise of rapid and frequent updates / patches.

The Crew is a very good game with the potential to become the greatest racer of this time. It finds a middle ground between arcade and hardcore handling (with assists it's very easy to stay on the road, on hardcore you have to be precise, and sport is somewhere in between.)
We will have to see in a month of 3-6 if Ubisoft and Ivory Tower can live up to their online promise, but even if you would leave out pvp this game is worth it.

Graphically, this is not next gen game. The Crew is on par with last gen driving games.

Handling is atrocious compared to other AAA driving games. If you're looking for a great racing game, look into NFS. While its open world is smaller, the gameplay is on point.

Hmmm this seems like another flop by Ubisoft. After the colossal disappointments in Unity, Rogue, Watch Dogs, and more, I think they should probably refocus on making games better and dial back on the marketing (looking at you Dan's gaming). Or maybe stick to churning out 5 Tom Clancy games per year. Whatever works I guess.

As for me, I'll just stick to GT and Forza, thanks.

This Game and the bad reviews it got is the reason i write my first text on metacritic.
I honestly can't believe all the bad scores this game gets...

Yes, it has a lot of minor and a few major flaws:
The tuning system has no depth...it looks cool at first, but as soon as you start clicking you realise, there is not much to do. The visual tuning is a complete joke. You can't use different layers of vinyl, you have to choose one and you can't change the freaking color of your vinyl...why??? It's pure luck, if the color of your desired vinyl fits the desired color of your car...that is almost an insult to any racing game fan...

Another thing that kind of left a sour taste are the graphics...i own both the PS 4 and the PC version...considering the size of the game, i knew not to expect a racing beauty like Driveclub of Need For Speed Rivals (Rivals maybe a VERY BAD NFS in terms of the racing itself, but the Frostbite Engine looks gorgeous!!) but still the overall graphics of the game on Playstation are somewhat disappointing...thats not what we were promised by the Next-Gen Publishers....the PC version of The Crew looks amazing in comparison.

But to be honest, those are imo the worst parts...yes, the AI is often unfair, but name ONE arcade racing game with a realistic and fair AI...please!? The original NFS Most Wanted (not the new trash that ripped off the name!) had the most unfair police chases ever, some of the challenges in the game were completely dependend on luck, not skill....but thats how arcade racing games work...

One of the reviews states that "It's impossible to control the car"...i'm sorry, but that only shows that racing games aren't your cup of tea, move on please.
The handling is actually quite nice. If you just fight through the first 5 driver levels you'll notice a HUGE difference...this is supposed to be a MMO remember...it's like complaining about a Level 1 WoW character because he doesn't have any skills, so the game must be bad...

The Crew isn't as good as Forza Horizon and the original NFS Underground and Most Wanted, granted...
But it's definitely worth a shot! Just the sheer size of the map is a must-see and must-experience for any racing game fan! Definitely not a 10....but definitely not worse than Driveclub! :D

Until someone decided to just wing it and not actually learn how vehicles handle in real life at all.

Or when someone decided to implement a false sense of challenge by having every single AI vehicle drive around the same level as yours if not better. This also includes the police.

"Car levels" should be renamed "e-peen" levels since your car level and its stats don't actually make a marginal difference in any way. You could be 100 car levels over the recommendation for a race and be 100 levels over the cars in it... And you'll always get that one car that's somehow faster than yours. It gets to the point where there is no point to the "back on track" function since if you make a single mistake in a race you aren't going to win since the guy in second place is almost always right behind you. The only exception to this is if you drive dirty and try to put him into a wall to slow him down long enough to get a big enough lead to give yourself an advantage. If you've taken the time to get better parts for your car and are a good driver that should make a difference. Someone at the developer decided it shouldn't.

Takedowns are the worst. YOU have to hit THEM to do any kind of damage to their "health bar". If they hit you they don't take any damage to their health. If you hit them and put them into a wall they take damage from you but not from hitting the wall.

It's as if no one play tested this game. Or if anyone did and though it was a good game they have a twisted idea of what "fun" is. This game is less fun than Dark Souls due to the unfair nature of it's difficulty. Even Dark Souls gives you a fighting chance if you have the right level of skill. Not to mention the core gameplay in Dark Souls won't see you magnetized directly into every vehicle and object you can hit or literally spawn traffic right in front of you to run into and destroy your chances of winning the race.

The graphics also look like middle era PS3 graphics. Even on PS4.

This game could have been good if they'd had a different group of people making decisions about what would make the game "fun".

I give it a score of 1 because I did have SOME fun with it. But not enough to avoid getting rid of it less than a week after purchase. Shame is Ubisoft finally fixed an error that was causing a lot of people not to get their preorder DLC.

Ubisoft gave it a good shot at the MMO driving game but ultimately it came out short of good. I'll start with the cons:
Cop chases suck- It's understandable that the cops are going to catch up to you but the way the cops move is too over the top. Not only do they catch up to you quick but they'll get in front of you and brake to stop you and you don't want that to happen. Why? Because
Ubisoft gave it a good shot at the MMO driving game but ultimately it came out short of good. I'll start with the cons:
Cop chases suck- It's understandable that the cops are going to catch up to you but the way the cops move is too over the top. Not only do they catch up to you quick but they'll get in front of you and brake to stop you and you don't want that to happen. Why? Because they are like tanks. Crashing into them is like crashing into a wall and the quickest way to get busted. That sucks because the best part of car chases is causing mayhem but instead you get overpowered cops that aren't fun at all. Don't get me wrong, you can outrun them but again not very fun.
    The AI sucks- It's not about what kind of car you have but the difficulty level. If it says it's impossible to beat it WILL BE impossible to beat even for your friend in his maxed out car trying to help you. Also, just like the cops they tend to act ridiculous in missions like the takedown ones which brings me to my next point;
Half the missions suck- If it ain't your old fashion race then it's going to suck. Takedown missions which should be the best end up sucking since; 1) they drive incredibly fast. There is a mission where you have to take down a bus. Good Luck trying to catch up. 2) You cannot use the environment to take down your opponent. Crash him into a wall, car, tree, etc. your opponent will take no damage other than the hit you gave him. There are other like the one where you have to collect certain things which tend to be frustrating trying to navigate on hills and dirt. For the most part most missions you won't look forward to half of these missions and the other ones are just ok.
RNG- Yes it's in the game. Wouldn't be an MMO if it wasn't though this ain't really an MMO. Once you get to max level (50) you unlock the ability to win platinum parts. The best parts that give you the best stats. The trick is getting the level 50 part as the rewards tend to give you a random level part from 40-50. The worst part though is that there is also a random bonus you get that increases a random stat higher than normal and if your aiming for that level 50 piece with a specific bonus; good luck because you'll be sitting there for hours trying to get that piece if you ever do. Though if your just looking for that level 50 I will admit that this RNG is a little more forgiving than other games (Destiny *cough* *cough*) as there were times that I obtained a level 50 piece in my first try or first 5 tries.
Crash cam-I hate it and don't know why they keep putting it. It made sense in some games but here where the focus is just driving (because you can't take down cops... well you can but it ain't fun) it doesn't make sense to have. I'll give them this though; you can press circle to skip the scene but the option to not watch it altogether would've been better since the times it decides to come out is random.
There are good parts to this though.
Open world- As in the whole US. It is a compressed version of course but still big enough that it will take you a good long while to drive across the map. The MMO aspect of seeing random people is there but plays no part in anything since there isn't any world events for people to do. The scenery is nice even though the landmarks have no description of what's great about the it but it's still nice to drive in familiar territory.
Co-op- You can have friends join you in anything which makes the game better because playing with friends is always better. That and the fact that they make some story missions easier like the cop chases as the game chooses one to be the target and the other has to take down the cops to help the friend escape and being able to ram head into cops is nice since it's the only time you can do this without penalty. In races though it can be boring since the AI keeps up with anyone that's in the lead meaning if your max level friend is helping you and you just started you better be comfortable in last place or somewhere down there while your friend does all the work even while your trying to keep up. It's not your fault though its just how the game is.
Different specs- This game lets you have a ride ready for any type of terrain. Need a car good on dirt roads? Take out your Dirt spec car. Going to drive over hills? There's your Raid spec car. For asphalt there's street, performance, and circuit. It's nice having a car for different types of terrain but it would've been much better if all cars had all specs. Instead some cars may have only one spec and only few have all specs. That my change though in future updates but for now you'll have to get different cars for each spec.
For the rest there is the in-between because I can say equal good and bad things about them.
-Customization is so-so. It's there but some specs are really limited in options like the circuit spec but at least they have different vinyls to make your car look different enough.
Ran out of space but that's my review.

Real average game, the graphics are below average, the gameplay is boring and dull, the story is very very cheesy. It had a lot of potential but it fails to deliver. 5/10

By far the best racing game to ever come out. This game is not a 10/10 but definitely a 10/10 racing game. Overall the game is probably 8.5-9/10. Hundreds of hours of game play and with more to in the future with free updates.

What a let down. The formula for a huge, open world racing is nice but poorly executed. There is no sense of thrill, or speed in this game and a pure lack of urgency when trying to escape the police. This game has poor car models, poor environments, poorly executed online (consistent disconnects) and a lack of fun. I would love to get my money back, so be warned. Keep yours. Expand

The game is one of the best Arcade racers I have played. I am overwhelmed with how they managed to make such a big map with so many things to do. Its awful. Looks like a game for PS2, you can't tell the difference between the 4 cars that you have to choose from, camaro, nissan 350z, mustang and challenger. You can upgrade these cars, yes, but it doesn't make any difference.Don't waste your money on this crap.

Don't be fooled by UBI trailers! This game sucks! First Driver got better driving physics and graphics looks awful (like ps2 games). It's really hard to say anything positive about this game.

The reviews are far too harsh on this game. The gameplay is solid, the story is decent, and the graphics are pretty good. Good selection of vehicles and a wide range of terrain and scenery give this game quite a bit of life. The multiplayer elements are pretty cool as well and the "crew" system adds some uniqueness to that element.

Do yourself a huge favor and immediately go into the options and change handling to hardcore, set steering sensitivity to about 3/4, put steering speed factor all the way right, and steering dead zone all the way left. Makes the game lots better and why they set the defaults like they did is anyone's guess.

Perhaps this is the worst videogame that i have played in this generation of consoles, the graphics are bad, the storyline so so, the races are nonsense, the bugs are unbelievable and the connection falls of every hour, what a terrible waste of money.

The race i good, the graphics is good, hell the gameplay is perfect! Although, I'm really upset that, this game required internet connection to play, but what the hell, it's still worth playing. I hoped The next installment won't feature stupid internet connection!

I do not understand the hate for this game, sure it isn't perfect and it certainly isn't the game we were promised back at E3 but I still found it enjoyable, the single player is bland and boring and not worth your time, where this game stands strong is online multiplayer, specifically with friends. I can honestly say that I’ve never played a game that’s as simultaneously frustrating and joyous as The Crew, Ubisoft’s new open-world racing game. In this gargantuan rendition of America – in all its glory I might add – you’ll be marvelling at the often beautiful backdrops you’re thundering through as you race towards your destination or next objective in one moment while scornfully chastising yourself for throwing away an hour of your life after getting screwed over by the game’s questionable racing mechanics in another. As a purely technical feat The Crew is an incredible success but as an enjoyable video game it is far less accomplished.

As I alluded to above, one of the greatest things about The Crew is the ability to spend your time travelling across an exceptionally well-translated version of the real-life United States of America. At the start of the game you’ll be racing through the streets of Detroit and as you work your way towards level fifty you’ll start exploring more and more of the world. The Crew’s interpretation of America is understandably a more condensed one than the actual thing, divided into five regions: the West Coast, East Coast, Mountain States, The South, and The Midwest. You’ll race your way across each of these five unique regions across the surprisingly long main campaign, seeing a large chunk of what The Crew’s world has to offer. Even so, though, you’ll still have a large portion of the map shaded in once you finally reach the final story mission; players who love exploring will have no shortage of locales to visit here. What is someone disappointing however is the lack of detail which persists across the entire world. For one thing The Crew’s America isn’t exactly a pretty one, certainly not to the standards of recent video games such as Grand Theft Auto V’s San Andreas and, more notably, Forza Horizon 2’s Southern Europe. Sure, there are shop names and pedestrians, famous city monuments such as the Space Needle in Seattle and the Willis Tower in Chicago, and other nice little touches like litter blowing around the place in cities and tumbleweeds doing their thing in the game’s rural locales. What’s missing however is the kind of pain-staking attention-to-detail seen in other recent releases like those mentioned earlier. In other words, there’s an unfortunate similarity between the streets of San Francisco and Miami. Along similar lines, The Crew’s world often feels desolate with few cars and pedestrians in sight. This makes sense in some places – like the Bonneville Salt Flats or the desert surrounding Las Vegas – but seems substantially less fitting in Downtown Los Angeles at five o’clock in the afternoon. The Crew’s world is one that looks like something from three years ago but is the size of one that exists in the future; it is a testimony to the sophisticated technology the game industry has at its disposal right now.

The Crew’s world is perhaps the only substantial thing I can find to praise about this troubled game. One of its many failings is its poorly crafted story. This is not to say that it’s a bad story, it’s just a really generic one and one that isn’t particularly engaging. I’d be willing to bet that The Crew’s developers are probably aware of this very fact; in fact, I think I remember seeing an interview in which the game director acknowledged the lack of creative flare in the narrative. The Crew sees the protagonist, Alex, set off on a cross-country journey to bring justice to Coburn and Shiv, the game’s two antagonists who killed Alex’s brother Dayton. To do this Alex must rise through the ranks of his brother’s organisation – the 5-10’s – by competing in a ridiculous number of races and challenges. As you can probably tell, this is the same kind of brother-out-for-revenge type of story we’ve seen many times before in the racing genre. The story doesn’t progress terribly well either; a brief piece of exposition is delivered to the player as he or she begins each mission. Usually this exposition is significantly lacking in detail or abhorrently ludicrous. Cut-scenes too are fairly stock-standard affairs like the type we saw in Just Cause 2; Alex drives up in some kind of car and either does some cool stuff in front of the camera as he makes his way to the starting line or hops out and walks to the car he needs to use for the mission. It’s not exactly this most gripping of pre-mission cinematics. The Crew’s story certainly isn’t the game’s strong suit but at least a weak narrative is something we’ve come to expect from the genre.
The Crew’s greatest failing is that it doesn’t deliver on the promise of a great racing experience. For starters the game’s handling model is absolutely ridiculous; full-lock feels nothing close to what it should be and it is near impossible to make cars drift. As such, cars in The Crew seems to have a mind of their own and will appear to disobey your commands in crucial moments. It’s the kind of system where if you can feel

Great Map. Drive was fun. But, very Poor Level Design. Above all, story mission was boring. That was monotonous driver work. The Crew was a letdown. That's a bummer.

The Crew can be enjoyable for some casual cross-country joy rides, especially if you have some friends to drive along. However, it comes up entirely short of most of its goals, and makes a wreck of car handling and competition for the sake of lackluster MMO mechanics.

While moments of genuine beauty exist, they occur in the context of a game that otherwise simply cannot compete with its contemporaries when it comes to visual presentation - a symptom, perhaps, of the seven-year development cycle. [Feb 2015, p.104]
