Graphically this remaster definitely holds up to contemporary games and the option to choose between English or Japanese language is very welcome. The story is good and you’ll be entertained for days but be aware that the controls are pretty sluggish which will cause some frustration.

Formulaic but not always predictable, this remains the best of the Tales series and one of the definitive Japanese role-players of the 2000s.

Fitting for a game called ‘Tales’ Vesperia spins a good yarn, but ultimately the game is showing its age.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is the remastered version in high resolution for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC of the original game, released 10 years ago. It adds two new playable characters and unpublished costumes in the West. It offers excellent cel shading graphics, anime-like cutscene sequences and a very dynamic real-time combat system.

Overall, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is an ok game. The fun characters and story are engaging but the game does feel old. For fans of the original version, this game will be great for you. For new players, this game will test your patience.

Tales of Vesperia is a clear example of Japanese RPGs from days gone by. Its traditional approach will please only the most conservative fans of the genre. Other players should look elsewhere - there is more than enough modern competition.

The gameplay and story holds up quite well even 10 years later, and the new content makes the experience refreshing even for the most hardcore fan. This is an important port, for the RPG community, for the Tales series, and for video games in general.

This is my first tales game experience.  surprisingly and unexpectedly i love and enjoy the game overall. It is a nostalgia feeling-good experience with the elements i most love in an RPG particularly in a final fantasy classic. It has the same formula but with its own authenticity. The strength of the game is the character development and its dialogue it is one (if not) the best. But after Arc II there is a little bit drag until the end. The plot and storyline is not perfect but fairly good. What i dont like about this game is its battle system for 3 major factor (1) it is clunky, inconsistent, and feels outdated (2) limited skill progression with underwhelming and confusing special moves. Although the graphics is outdated, it looks good and age well. I am excited to play my next tales game.

    Character development/dialogue 9/10
    Graphics 8/10
    Gameplay 6/10
    Battle system 6/10
    Story / narrative - 8/10
    Progression - 7/10

Full Review »
