A paper-based fantasy offers dozens of hours of quality entertainment, superbly written dialogues and countless memorable characters and moments. Tales of Vesperia is a safe bet. [Issue#294]

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is well worth your time, the story and in particular the characters are some of the most fleshed out and unique individuals that you can’t help but grow attached to. The flashy yet deep combat system enhances what is already a fantastic JRPG. Any fan of the genre needs to check this out.

Tales of Vesperia stands as one of the best entries in the long-running franchise. Any issues I may have are minor compared to everything this game gets right. The Definitive Edition will be a treat for both returning players and newcomers alike.

Ultimately, the question for many will be if Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is worth picking up even if players have experienced it before. The answer, at least in my eyes, is a resounding yes.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition shows its age in some areas, but with its enjoyable characters, interesting story, beautiful aesthetic and fun combat, this is one game from 2008 that definitely still holds up in 2019.

The best option to revisit -or experience for the first time- an excellent JRPG that today -and in this enhanced version with all the extra content that was never released in the West- feels as fresh as it did when it was originally released.

For a ten year old game, nothing about Tales of Vesperia feels like it doesn't belong today. The Tales series might be one of the most traditional JRPG properties out there, but when the core is this good, innovation isn't needed.

Boasting the best script, best overworld, and best pacing the series has ever seen, Tales of Vesperia stands out as the single strongest entry in the franchise. Though later entries do feature stronger casts and gameplay mechanics, this is not lacking in either department. The members of Brave Vesperia all share an excellent amount of chemistry with one another, and the combat, while comparatively simple, actually thrives in how easy to pick up but difficult to master it can be.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition lives up to its namesake, delivering new content previously exclusive to Japan and updated visuals that enhance an already gorgeous aesthetic. The fantastic cast of characters, breathtaking world, and amazing combat elevate Vesperia to the highest point of the Tales series. This is the perfect opportunity for veterans to rediscover their love of this great RPG, as well as the best way for newcomers to experience an incredible game that still holds its own.

Shades and polygonal models will also feel the weight of the years, but the anime-style graphic compartment and the presence of the original dubbing make it a must for any JRPG admirer.

Tales of Vesperia is now 10 years old and clearly outdated in some aspects but the stellar cast, simple combat mechanics and charming cel shading eventually win you over.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition has everything an RPG fan could want: engaging combat, fun tactics, and a stellar narrative. What puts Vesperia above the rest of the franchise, however, is how accessible it is to everyone. It has clear signs of age, but within Vesperia beats the heart of a classic that everyone should experience.

Tales of Vesperia returns to show why it was one of the best RPGs of the past generation. We will enjoy an excellent story, with great characters, in what will be a very entertaining trip.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is a polished version of an already great JRPG, and it also includes a bunch new contents that will please both the fans and those who approach this game for the first time.

Despite a ton of cliches, the story, the characters and the world of Tales of Vesperia have stood the test of time. The narrative is single, but well-structured and at times riveting, which means a lot in a JRPG.

For all the missed opportunities, Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition perfectly catches the spirit of the series. Its biggest achievement is that it puts a great cast of characters front and center without compromising the JRPG-centric narrative style. Although it does little to refine the Tales formula, Vesperia is clearly a must-play for any JRPG fan, if not for the rather uninspired and predictable story, but for the characterization, great voice acting and more often than not hilarious conversations.

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition excels in the places that matter most to Tales game, and in doing so earns the timeless adulation lavished on it by its fans. I can't tell you if it's the best Tales game, but it's everything a Tales game needs to be, in order to be considered great.

Any JRPG fan who missed Tales of Vesperia the first time around shouldn’t hesitate to check out this definitive edition of the title. Despite its age, the game still holds up in 2019.

While Namco Bandai has not released a real 8th generation title in the Tales series yet, the new ported version of Tales of Vesperia feels like a solid JRPG that can easily be compared with current 8th generation titles. If you are a fan of JRPGs and for some reason had no chance to grab it back in 2008, now is the time for you to experience one of the best entries in the Tales series and one of the best JRPGs ever.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition brings one of, if not the best Tales game to PS4, and that alone will no doubt be enough to persuade fans of the series. But really, ten years after its original release, Vesperia deserves more credit than that. It's a borderline classic Japanese RPG, and one that still holds up in 2019 thanks to a great cast of characters and some finely poised action.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is truly a love letter from Namco Tales Studios to fans of the franchise. While the main story is a touch trite and the combat a little dull, it’s worth it to accompany this cast of interesting and nuanced characters on their journey to save the day.

Graphically this remaster definitely holds up to contemporary games and the option to choose between English or Japanese language is very welcome. The story is good and you’ll be entertained for days but be aware that the controls are pretty sluggish which will cause some frustration.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is the remastered version in high resolution for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC of the original game, released 10 years ago. It adds two new playable characters and unpublished costumes in the West. It offers excellent cel shading graphics, anime-like cutscene sequences and a very dynamic real-time combat system.

Overall, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is an ok game. The fun characters and story are engaging but the game does feel old. For fans of the original version, this game will be great for you. For new players, this game will test your patience.

Tales of Vesperia is a clear example of Japanese RPGs from days gone by. Its traditional approach will please only the most conservative fans of the genre. Other players should look elsewhere - there is more than enough modern competition.

The gameplay and story holds up quite well even 10 years later, and the new content makes the experience refreshing even for the most hardcore fan. This is an important port, for the RPG community, for the Tales series, and for video games in general.

This is my first tales game experience.  surprisingly and unexpectedly i love and enjoy the game overall. It is a nostalgia feeling-good experience with the elements i most love in an RPG particularly in a final fantasy classic. It has the same formula but with its own authenticity. The strength of the game is the character development and its dialogue it is one (if not) the best. But after Arc II there is a little bit drag until the end. The plot and storyline is not perfect but fairly good. What i dont like about this game is its battle system for 3 major factor (1) it is clunky, inconsistent, and feels outdated (2) limited skill progression with underwhelming and confusing special moves. Although the graphics is outdated, it looks good and age well. I am excited to play my next tales game.

    Character development/dialogue 9/10
    Graphics 8/10
    Gameplay 6/10
    Battle system 6/10
    Story / narrative - 8/10
    Progression - 7/10

Full Review »
