It's not a terrible game, but man it is severely lacking, after two days of playing online, I got so bored and decided to stop playing, which is a shame, this was one of my personal anticipated games of 2016, and so far it's been really dissapointing. Well guess what I like single player content on fighting games! **** me, Right?

This game is an example of why ALL games needs good, decent bots and Ai to play against, regardless if its multiplayer or not or there might not be enough people to play against OR you might never get a game when YOU want one, instead of waiting. OR you might want to go offline and play and tons of other reasons.

Street Fighter V isn´t the perfect game it could be. The fighting mechanics are truly amazing. But the lack of content on release was really a strange and kind of stupid move from capcom. This is indeed a unfinished game. But the gameplay itself is simply flawless and so much fun. This is a tough one. Once Street Fighter V is "finished" it could be the best fighting game out there.

Core combat mechanics and play is smooth, responsive, fantastic to look at. The game-play is just impeccable for me. It doesn't take much to impress me with fighting games. As long as the animations are smooth, as long as the animation transitions in character motion is consistent with the moves that they're performing and are going to perform is 'believable' enough I'm already almost sold.

Then I only need some decent music, good enough balance that one medium punch won't drain like 30% HP, some simple-enough combos to execute... and of course if the core fighting mechanics allow for the occasional button-mashing efficiency for the new comers then it's nearly perfect for me at that point. I'm a simple man... if I have fun in a game and if there's obvious quality versus quantity then I can appreciate that.

I agree that when the game came out it was severely lacking in content. That's because Capcom rushed it out of the door ASAP for the game to be officially available for eSports / tournaments. It was "fine" for that specifically when it came out, but unfortunately that strategy came back on Capcom hard to bite their arse. The thing is that in video gaming you won't have a big window of opportunity to redeem your game if it "fails" at release. The First Impressions, the First-Hand journalistic Reviews, the first Previews... it's all that stuff that counts probably more than the opinions from the actual buyers when the game finally comes out. Initial impressions is what can sell a game, not what you MIGHT add to it one or two years down the line when people already moved on to something else.

The thing now is that Street Fighter 5 really IS a VERY good fighting game in and of itself. However, people remember it, but for the wrong reasons. Meaning that when we talk about SFV to video gamers in general whom have the slightest knowledge about this franchise they'll probably say something like "Oh yeah... that game, I remember when it came out with basically nothing in it". They won't say something like "Oh yeah! SFV! Dude that game was awesome even if it took a full year to evolve into something good".

The only thing I hope to see Capcom doing for the inevitable Street Fighter 6 one day is to see them take their time to work on it, polish it, heavily test it internally with veterans of the series and actual tournament participants that should be invited at regular intervals to the studio as the game is being developed to help the devs better understand what needs to be done. We're probably a solid 4 to 5 years away from the next SF game, but it WILL happen. I just hope that Capcom won't rush that one out too just because of eSports and tournaments.

But all in all, SF5's biggest positive points for me are:

+ Superb Animations (to me it's extremely important in a fighting game)
+ Great music (also very important to me)
+ Great characters selection (including DLC characters of course), I only want Q to make it.
+ Core fighting mechanics are great, very responsive

+ Great fighting pace. The fighting doesn't feel too slow, or too fast of a fighting game; I have time to think, and more importantly I have time to actually see and anticipate what my opponent is going to do or what he's trying to do. In other words the pace is just right for a "Mind Game" between two human opponents.

+ There's now enough basic content, there could be more, but what's there now is appreciable. You have the usual Training Mode, online play (casual and ranked), Versus and Story modes (very short character-specific or a lengthier general story mode). This point would have been a negative at release and even for months to follow, but right now as I type this in April 2017 the game's content is just alright, I wouldn't need more per se; what's there is fine.

Let's just say that at release I would have probably rated this game something like 4 or 5 out of 10. But now I really, REALLY like it. It's one of the best fighting games I've played in the past 10 years. But I'll conclude by saying (and sort of repeating myself in doing so) that Capcom absolutely has to learn from SFV's initial release state. If they want this franchise to continue doing well (or better than it does right now) then they will have to work on the next one for a lot longer before they decide to release it.

The big gist of this for developers is: Stop. Rushing. Games. Out.

    Thanks.

Poor netcode/poor balance/poor balance batches/no arcade mode, I can keep going.
The only reason I am still playing it because I have a local community that meets once a week and I only play SFV in that meetup.
The meta of this game is ridiculous. ALL is about guessing/50:50 and footies game are dead. One jump in for a few characters(Balrog, Laura..) and you will be dead in the next 10

A shame. No offline content at launch, few characters that matter, story mode added later but still disappointing. Not worthy a single penny and I really regret the money I spent thinking it could be as glorious as the previous game.

The gameplay is perfect, however as you would have read everywhere else, there is not much single player functionality. I recommend waiting it out if you can, maybe you will be lucky enough to get it at a price drop. If you are a pro player then this is really for you (which i am not) hopefully in the coming months we get more features to play with.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is good the fighting mechanics are a lot better that in USFV, the games has a very interesting roster, every character feels unique and id fun to play if you manage to understand them.
The story is just a prologue for the June expansion as it is right now is pretty boring.
Survival mode is a good challenge, but may get frustrating some times, the worst part is survival mode is the only way to get some of the colors for the characters and you have to complete it in each mode to get colors for the costume your characters is using at that moment.
Now the most interesting part the online:
The online is working as it should the netcode is just fine and is rare to get a laggy match, of course that also depends of your area and ISP.
Overall the game is good but it is still lacking content, If your planning to be competitive online the game is good to go now, on the other hand if you want more single player content it would be a good idea to wait for the June patch.

Street Fighter V is a well-made foundation for a proper sequel, but it's just too light on content to recommend at this stage. If your only focus is online multiplayer or tournament-style competition, then you may feel like SFV is streamlined to your liking, but casual players wanting solo modes will be sorely disappointed. Capcom has built the game with a DLC release schedule in mind, and it will take several months of both paid and free downloads to make it feel complete. Even the story mode barely passes as an introduction to the 16-character roster, as it currently features 4 low-tier fights with some quick graphic novel cutscenes in between. It's nice that we get Japanese and English dual audio, partially because the English voice acting is a mixed bag and nowhere near the quality I'd expect from a high-profile release like this. Street Fighter devotees will be pleased to know that the narrative is pushed in some interesting directions, but it's far from poetry. Also, the new characters are [arguably] better than the ones we got in SFIV's initial release, but they still don't feel as iconic as the series mainstays, many of whom will remain absent until several waves of DLC have passed. The new mechanics are solid and perhaps more balanced for competitive play, and the graphics are fluid and crisp, if the weird caricature art style doesn't turn you off. Sound effects and music are also decent, but the intro lacked any real punch, something I really enjoyed in the earliest SFIV releases and even SFxTK. I really want to like SFV, but in its current state, it really fails to excite me the way a good fighting game should. Inevitably, we'll end up with Super Street Fighter V Turbo: Arcade Edition (or something to that effect) in a year or so, and while I know most gamers won't be able to wait that long, I doubt anyone will look back at this launch fondly. It's a half-baked triple-A title designed to gobble up DLC money, and yet I can't deny the allure of jumping in while the game is still hot. Buy at your own risk, I suppose. Expand

Capcom said that they are working on the Arcade Mode, the only thing that was missing for me... and this shows that they care about the players too.
About the abrupt release of the game... This was for the tournaments that are to come this year, so we need to understand this. Capcom didn't try to deceive anyone, and they were clear about the game content, so, if you bought the game

The problem with the servers is normal now a days and almost all games have this kind of problem in the first days... I think the problem was resolved, because i am not experiencing any lag in the online matches.

The gameplay is awsome! The best fight game in my opinion...
The number of characters is OK, and you don't need to pay for the DLC characters.
The survivial mode is great and the prólogue of the story mode is decent. For me 8.5 is fair enought.

I am no fighting game pro. Just a guy who bought Street Fighter V because I wanted to play a fighting game. I also understand game development realities, so I will not bash the game unfairly like others. In our age where games are more of an updating service (with patches and DLCs) than a final product, criticising a game before it's complete is pointless.

First, is Street Fighter V a bad game as many people complain? Is it a Capcom fraud? No, it isn't. In fact, it's pure gold (not that it couldn't have been even better). Anyone scoring the game lowly is either a salty Xbox fan who was left out of the SF V party due to the Sony/Capcom exclusivity deal, or needs to fix his head.

Secondly, could Street Fighter V have been more feature rich at launch? Yes, it could, but it wouldn't have made a lot of difference. SF V may have launched too early and incomplete (due to the players having to train before participating in tournaments), initially featuring only a versus mode and training mode, with no online mode and story mode and arcade mode and all, but it was a really GOOD game with the best gameplay I have ever experienced in a fighting game. Accessible, yet very deep. Anyway, most of the missing content was patched in quickly, and various server problems have been fixed, too. Only thing that's missing as of my review is the story mode. Well, even I (not being a fighting game pro) know that story mode is almost pointless in a fighting game. Anyone complaining about SF V missing the story mode and scoring it low, is like complaining a burger has no sesame in the bread. Who cares, really? And who will really miss it if it's not there at the moment?

Thirdly, gameplay is King in Street Fighter V. I am not a guy who can perform a 20-hit combo, but I appreciate the accessible (for beginners) yet deep (for pros) gameplay. There are the standard punches/kicks, jumps, special moves like Hadouken, and Ultra moves. But the best parts are the V-Trigger and V-Reversal mechanics, each serving different purposes and even differing between each character. I personally don't play chargers like Bison and the newly added Guyle or grapplers like Zangief, rather playing ranged characters, but the roster is quite varied and it will keep expanding in the coming years via DLC. And for the first time, Capcom won't release Super Mega Ultra Editions of the same SF game, so you don't have to fear about being ripped off like in the past years.

Overall, SF V is a very good game which doesn't deserve the hatred it has generated. It's simply one of the best fighting games available, and I don't think that will change for quite some time. Even at launch with most modes missing, the game had (and has) no in-game glitches, no frame rate drops, no nothing. And yet, other games releasing with severe technical issues are being reviewed differently to this little rough gem.

I would not recommend the game as it is to someone with a passing interest in the genre, maybe in June after the story mode has been added, but if you like fighting games for the purpose of fighting against other humans, this game won't disappoint you

The game, When the servers are fixed, will be great. Everyone i think is just butt-hurt from the servers being down and the lack of Arcade mode and Challenge mode at launch. (And you can just do Survival mode, It's like Arcade mode basically) But once these things are fixed, Everyone is gonna be fine.

Street Fighter V feels incomplete... yes, we know... but that doesn't mean users can go critter so hard to Metacritic and give it bad scores. For me the versus mode is what SF has always been about, but it is fair to say the game won't be complete until they add the full story mode, patch a couple details etc. But for me, what we have here is a incredible game. Haven't had this much fun since the Dreamcast days!

Every single big title that's come out lately has been chastised by internet gamers and made out to be far worse than they really are because gamers are becoming more and more self entitled.

A game can have so much going right for it.

    - Smooth controls? Check. Good graphics? Check.

    - Interesting story and character development? Check.

    - "ZOMG, one thing wrong with t3h gaem!! 0/10"

Gamers these days seriously need to grow up and stop feeling so self entitled. Even if you don't think a game is good, or great, giving it a 0/10 for one or two problems while ignoring the bigger picture is ruining the industry almost as much as microtransactions and DLC.

The worst part is 90% of the people complaining and delivering 0/10 ratings never played the game in their lives to even give an honest opinion. They just follow the bandwagon where ever it takes them. Because screw thinking for yourself, the internet runs in packs. Think like everyone else.

Street Fighter V was originally deigned to be an online only game until the fans expressed they wanted a story mode. The development of a story mode started late in production. That being said the game feels amazing. The controls are very tight and responsive and the game looks great. Combine that with a good soundtrack and you can't help but want to play more.

Day 1 was a bit touch and go with the serves but that is to be expected. The matches you do get put in are always of good quality thanks to the ability to filter matches by connection type.

This game is a MUST OWN for any fan of Street Fighter or fighting games in general.

Every Street Fighter has offered something different to the experience. The series has been fine tuning the mechanics for a long time offering fighting game fans some of the best gameplay out of any series and Street Fighter V does not disappoint.

What is offered in the game:

Story Mode - Story Mode has a focus on what it says it is, Story. Not a lot of battles, but more story than any Street Fighter game has had to date. For those that mostly just play the games and never look at outside material it is especially good since it clarifies on key points in the story that had been missing previously. It also gives details on the new characters. Instead of being cinematic it goes back to the roots with art work and text boxes, but in this case you also have voice acting. It leaves a lot opened for the Story being added in June and Capcom has already absorbed me into it.

Survival Mode - Instead of classic Arcade Mode for the single player experience, you get Survival Mode. It has four difficulty modes. Easy which has you go through 10 battles, Medium which has 30, Hard which has 50, and Hell which has 100. After each battle you can use some of your points to increase health or other stats. Double Down on the other hand is the opposite, spend a few points to take a hit in hopes of multiplying your score the next round. The overall focus of this is to get you used to not depending on the increases and instead improving each time so that you can finish with a higher score. Of course this is more about self improvement. Beating Easy will also unlock outfit color 3 for the outfit of the character you are using. Beating Medium will unlock 4-6 and Hard 7-10 and Hell unlocks a new Title.

Training Mode - Best part about training mode on top of being able to set the CPU to whichever difficulty you prefer, you can now set it up so the AI has limited health. Meaning that you can train against the AI in a round base like format. This feature is really useful if you want to try and figure out how to beat your worst matchup with a character.

VS Mode - Classic Player vs Player. Like in the old school games, no option to verse the CPU. An odd decision as all versions of Street Fighter IV had an option to do so.

When connected to the Capcom Network completing Story Mode and all the Survival Modes gets you EXP and Fight Money. You actually get quite a bit from completing these modes despite a finite amount. I already have enough for the first 4 DLC characters and I have yet to finish all of Survival.

One issue is if the online network loses connection, you do get kicked from the mode you are playing and have to start over if it is Survival. Story Mode featuring only two to four fights per character allows you to jump straight back in without any real concern. You also cannot earn EXP or FM offline.

As it is now, I have yet to really stop playing this game. I have not done any ranked or casual online matches, but I have played a few rounds in the Battle Lounge. Online could still use improvements, but everyday it gets better and Capcom is watching and working hard to fix issues as they come. You can still play all the single player modes offline if the network is not stable.

I really like the game as it is. Solid gameplay and a good amount of content. You have to want to improve to take full advantage of all the content offered, but that is true of any game out there, especially fighting games.

March however is going to start adding more content. Alex can be gotten from the Store which will be open then for 100,000 FM or you can buy him roughly for $5.00. I recommend just completing Story Mode which only takes about 2 hours if you want the story. Only about 5 minutes if you skip the story and just do the fights. That will net you 160,000 FM and Alex is yours. Some recommend getting the Season Pass, but I am taking full advantage of the FM I can obtain from Single Player Modes. This also does not include FM gained from Challenges which unlocks next month and is also Free update to all players. In fact any game changing update is Free unlike the Street Fighter IV going into Super, AE and then Ultra. Meaning the first copy is the only copy you ever need to own. Plus all characters through future updates will be able to be bought with FM which is earned by playing the game. The better you get the more FM you can earn. Of course improving your game will be easier starting in March when you have access to the character Trials.

Not enough? Arcade mode, trials, and an expansive Story Mode will also be added in a title update for free in the future, so the game is in no shortage of single player content. Not now, and not in the future.

Incase you are wondering why it sounds like the game was released "early", the answer is real simple. Capcom did it for the fans. They did it for the community. They released the game early so that people can get the practice in, and so people can participate in the Capcom Pro Tour and Evo.

Worried about having to pay for new characters and costumes? Don't worry, all the "DLC" will be unlockable in-game without ever having to spend a dime, just like in the old PS2 days before DLC.

This is a game that is going to be supported, both by capcom and the fans, for the next 6 to 7 years. You will never have to worry about the community dying on you.

The first major problem with the game is the lack of a proper story mode, only consisting of 3 "cutscenes" (still drawings with a voiceover) broken by easy level bot fights per character. Although the "real" story mode, with allegedly over an hour of cinematic content and a difficulty setting for the current story mode are set to come, if your looking for this kind of single player content in a fighting game, right now this is not the game you're looking for.

Also another big complaint concerning single player is the lack of a true arcade mode, where you can fight the AI in quick match. Although there exists survival mode and you could also just fight the computer by setting on the AI in training mode, arcade mode is kind of a staple in fighting games and has been present on previous iterations of this same game so it seems definitely like a odd decision leaving this out of the game. Again, Capcom has already released a statement saying that arcade mode is currently in the works, but this is definitely something that will influence a lot of buyers looking for a better single player experience at the moment of purchase.

Other solo gameplay mode missing from the game at launch but scheduled to come March of this year is challenge mode. This update should be accompanied by the in-game store and our first dlc character. Now to give some credit to this game outside of gameplay related stuff i think the model of allowing characters to be released and bought with in-game money is a much better model than just releasing rooster updates as completely separate games, as it permits to unlocking characters with no real money investment after purchasing the game (unless you just cant wait to grind some points).
This is kind of justifies the always online issue (you can play offline just not gain point of it) but this point is debatable though, thanks to the instability online play had during the opening week, dropping you out of games a handful of times and sometimes also failing to record data after a match, although things have gotten better since then, at least in my experience.

But now when it comes to how "good" playing online feels, i think this game is pretty good. Online play has few minor differences to offline and little times have I felt some kind of lag compensation or slowness in my inputs which makes the online play really enjoyable and competitive (when it actually works), because the core gameplay of this game is also really good, inputs feel responsive, V trigger is a welcomed replacement for the revenge gauge, the character's themselves fill each different types of play, etc. And the game graphics even if they aren't the most technically impressive they do their job of representing in a interesting and understandable way what's happening on screen, same with music, with a few tracks and stages standing out as the more energetic and colorful of the bunch, but overall a pretty good bundle of them nonetheless.

This leads me to the conclusion, should you buy this game?

Depends, different people have different standards as to what is the value of 60 dollars and what they spend it in. This game *SHOULD* have been a must buy for any fighting game enthusiast or anyone looking for some fun arcade style fighting game but i unfortunately can't recommend the game to everyone in its current state. Right now the game lacks diversity and quantity of single player content as to make a valuable buy for someone looking to put more than an hour into story and challenge modes as it almost completely lacks this features at the moment, maybe just holding your money and checking in in a couple of months it's your best option.

But if your looking for some solid and really fun online multiplayer this is definitely a good option for you as right now the only "meat" the game has is in its good online mode and amazing gameplay.

TL DR: Game right now is not worth if you want a whole gaming experience, there are just better other games offering much more in those categories like MK X, Skullgirlls, BlazBlue, etc. Probably want to hold on a couple of months until most of the content gets released.
If you want the game for the online play,to get some practice with it, to grab experience on how the game flows and character matchups, and you really want to get gud then this game is pretty good, since the gameplay is one of the best and online play is very smooth.

Sorry... I'm writing this review to balance out the idiocy. Capcom released plenty of information surrounding what modes would be available at launch and yet people act indignant because their online, multiplayer, fighting game didn't have a story-driven, single player mode. So, here are the positives for the prospective buyer. SF5 looks, plays and feels great. There are variety of characters with unique fighting styles and the net play I've experienced has been virtually lag-less.

The V system is a huge improvement over SF4's focus attack. Ever try to explain the focus attack to someone who wasn't used to it? It would go something like this.

"See, there is this focus attack thing. It absorbs one hit, from most attacks, and if you hold it long enough you can crumple your opponent. But never use it like that. Instead, use it, then cancel in order to pull off a more useful combo."

The v-system is much easier to wrap your head around. Each character has a unique v-skill and v-trigger that covers a weakness of that character. Use your v-skill and it will build up you meter. When your meter is full, use your v-trigger to gain an advantage in the match, either by entering an empowered state or activating a unique, powerful move. It complements the flow of battle, rather then simply providing a complicated way to extend a combo.

The combo system has also changed quite a bit. Unlike SF4, landing a light attack won't usually lead to high damage combo. But, if you manage to hit an opponent during a heavy or special attack, you'll trigger a crush counter, which will enable new combos and deal additional damage.

Finally, Capcom announced that SF5 is the only version of the game that you'll have to purchase. For SF4, there were 4 iteration and you had to buy each if you wanted to keep up with the community. The $60 for SF5 is a steal by comparison. So yes, you're paying a little more up front this time, but it's the only time you'll need to and it will presumably be well worth it in the long run.

First of all the depth of game play is pretty crazy all the characters seem to have a lot of depth and the Vskill and triggers are lots of fun. The combos are easier to make than is SF4 which is great because some combos were too hard on SF4.

The game is gorgeous the cast is really well designed and animated. IMO SF5 has the potential to become the biggest fighting game on this generation of hardware. 8/10

I am very glad they did this as I have had four months of solid entertainment which I wouldn't have had if Capcom had pandered to the whiners and released the game six months later after all content had been developed. Everyone knew content was being rolled out and was provided with the schedule, so how can you buy the Game and complain that you are waiting for content. If you had a brain you would have waited until the content you were hoping for was released buy it then, and have nothing to complain about. I am very happy for the early release as its a great game! and when the story is rolled out, I will be even happier, which is one month away. Stop whining people, the only thing you are achieving is stopping fans of games from getting early access. Which in this scenario means the game would be released in October!! Expand

As for the other complaints: lobbies (which aid in nothing but causing problems with jerks seeking easy wins, and rude comments), arcade mode (strange, but also hardly played by most of the community), and a way to observe other matches (I imagine it was barely used since this was available in SFIV). Everybody just needs to chill. Features will be added. It is pretty clear they got it out in time for the competitive community to use, with other functionality on a reasonable timeline. Online play is stellar, the graphics beautiful, the characters deep and balanced, and the cast diverse. If you are a fan of SF and enjoy the online component (like most), you will be extremely happy. Felt like signing up and talking a bit about the game. SFV at this point does not have a shop and a challenge mode. The challenge mode I find to be an issue for newer players. People who don't know how to go into training mode and work out combos for themselves are at a bit of a disadvantage. That sucks. The story mode is both what I wanted and not.

People who don't know how to go into training mode and work out combos for themselves are at a bit of a disadvantage. That sucks. The story mode is both what I wanted and not.

Story mode is essential you learning about the characters story and about what drives them and the people in their lives. I've never really cared about the fight hobo Ryu, but after playing the story I know know a little bit about why he spends all his time training in the mountains. New players and veterans can fall in love with the story of a character without beating an arcade mode.

On to arcade mode! It's gone! Now there is a survival mode, where players of varying skill levels can fight against the PC in a gauntlet. If you make it to the end you get rewarded with an alt color and if not then you have some work to do. I like that the colors are tied to a personal achievement as opposed to buying them with fight money like I previously believed. The survival mode is challenging, but has certain buffs that you can get to aid you in your climb to defeating 10, 30, 50 opponents.

When it comes to the online, it's cut out for me a few times today, but I've had a lot of great matches. I;m from the east coast of the U.S. and have had good matches with people from Puerto Rico, France, and Japan.

If your a Street Fighter fan, then you'll be happy with the story, survival, and online modes (when you can get matches). The issue is that anyone who is new will be slightly lost in discovering combos and understanding how to play. I believe that Survival mode is supposed to replace Arcade, but the issue is that no mode teaches a player how to play a character! Which is something that is ridiculous.

The stills in the "story" mode almost make it feel a bit retro, the characters feel balanced and some of the clutter from Ultra Street Fighter 4 has been removed (I doubt I even played with over half the characters).

Playing against other people is so much more fun that the AI and you pick up things playing against other opponents you may not discover in training mode, unless you want to spend hours watching other people play on YouTube - something I do not have the luxury of time to do.

I have not experienced any issues with the servers personally - too busy with work the day of launch and during the week.. but every major online game these days tends to have server issues for the first few days. My experience so far has only been a minority of people quitting in the second or third round when the fight's not going their way.

This weekend I spend £12 watching Deadpool for 2 hours, thoroughly enjoyed the film and it cost a hourly rate of entertainment of £6. I have already had 10 hours worth of entertainment out of Street Fighter V as the gameplay and online has been so enjoyable - so it's already working out better value for money.. £3.80 a hour and it will only get cheaper over time..

Unfortunately Capcom has totally failed to properly test this game. It is primarily an always online experience and the only way to correctly test such a thing is to leave those elements active during a beta test. Instead capcom only did short tests for a few days to a a week at a time and neglected to collect any relevant information as far as server load/stress goes.

This game also follows a new standard in development that will NOT be exclusive to Capcom. which is to sell an unfinished game at full price and offer the meat that goes with the bones as a later content update. It's essentially a disguised form of early-access and is the result of investor pressure to get a product out faster so they can make money sooner.

There will be a 'free update' in march which sounds fancy and great but it's really just them giving what they owe us for our $60+

This game will probably be worth a purchase but I would advise that you not do so until after the march update is released at the earliest. The game itself will be complete in June, so that would be when to buy it if you actually want your money's worth right off the bat.

At the point of release the game is essentially in Beta #5

Matchmaking is slow, general server connectivity is suspect, the game is skimpy on single player content, and survival is the most functional mode in the game but lacks worthwhile in-game rewards. All of these are major defects, but ultimately SF V is a fighting game and the fighting is excellent. If you invite some friends over and play some 1 on 1 you'll have a good time. The gameplay is the rewarding part of Street Fighter V and requires skill to master while remaining fun. With that said, even button mashers will have a good time as long as they're playing another button masher. I've played Street Fighter since the first game and the fighting in this game is the best it has ever been. The V-Trigger system, balancing, and accessibility tweaks make the gameplay feel complete. I pre-ordered and I'm disappointed with the mostly everything except the fighting - but that's why I bought it in the first place. In today's gaming landscape where shipping broken ass games are the trend, this ranks fairly high on the list. But it seems, Capcom focused its resources on gameplay for the Street Fighter community and figured to fix everything else in the upcoming months. Wait a month for the sorely needed single player content if you're frustrated by poor online execution or don't have friends to play with locally and then jump on in. Expand

While we may get plenty of Street Fighter re-releases over the years (looking at you, Ultra Street Fighter IV), it’s always a treat when a new numbered entry is lined up for release. After all, the last mainline game released in 2008. Wow.
Anyway, the acclaimed Street Fighter series is back in this new, breathtakingly gorgeous fighting game. The characters are well-defined and each of them have received much-needed changes to their appearances, though the game still spouts a bit of oversexualization. Anyway, the game looks good.
But for a series whose last entry had over 20 characters in just the base entry (44 in “Ultra”) we were a bit surprised to find only 16 characters in Street Fighter V, a full-priced console game in 2016. Now, before anyone freaks out, nothing really suffers because of this.
Each character is a joy to play as, from series regulars Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li to newcomers F.A.N.G. and Rashid. Obviously, Capcom still knows how to introduce something new and enjoyable, but the game’s mechanics and plans for future content are a bit wonky.
Things like new characters, stages and more will be released in waves, which you can purchase using in-game Fight Money, which is earned by, well, playing the game. It takes a while, so you’ll be pleased to know you can spend real-life money (converted to Zenny) to get the content as soon as it’s released.
Yes, we know. It’s lame to sell content like this post-release, but at least there is an option for in-game currency and none of the content is hiding on-disc. The only other recent game to do this was Guitar Hero Live, and the core game didn’t suffer because of it, so fret not. Just think of it like the old days where you would play hours and hours to unlock a certain character.
And please, don’t let the monetization scare you because Street Fighter V is a fantastic game, not only in gameplay and control but fan service. Each of the 16 characters sport an interactive comic-like story mode, as well as their “V-Skill,” “V-Reversal” and “V-Trigger,” special move mechanics new to this game. The game even supports PS3 fight sticks in the PS4 version, so you don’t have to replace those either.
Aside from the story mode, new mechanics and competent online matchmaking, the mode options are kind of bleak. There is Versus, of course, so feel free to go head-to-head with friends, and Survival, where you’ll have to win matches upon matches to unlock some new stuff for your characters.
Overall, the game looks and feel great, but it’s visibly unfinished. Think of it like Capcom’s version of an “Early Access” game. Make the investment now, have some fun, and keep playing as the game moves closer to completion.
Rumor has it that an actual arcade mode and new difficulty options are in the works. But we’ll see. Who knows? They could just save those for Ultra Super Uber Street Fighter V Complete Edition HD.

While the content that SFV does have seems to be well executed (offline at least), the problem is that the same sort of content was executed just as well, if not better, and with more of it, over a whole heap of previous Capcom games on different consoles over the last 20 years or so. There are individual components of Street Fighter Alpha Anthology on PS2 that had more to it than SFV.

Basically, this is Capcom's laziest fighting game effort since Capcom Fighting Jam/Evolution.

All I would say is lacking is an Arcade mode, and better frame rate lag. Once those would be implemented, this game is top notch in the fighting game genre now.....miles above what it was at initial release. At initial release I gave this around a 5-6 based on its fighting mechanics mainly, but now I give it a 9. After the season 2 characters and whatever else they improve in that time, I think it'd be smart to repackage and release a Super Street Fighter V or something so this game gets a fair shake for the public. Hopefully, Capcom will learn a lesson from this. Expand

The game has come a long way since its launch, and finally the excellent gameplay it always had now is completed nicely with the several additions that have been added to the game, from extra characters, modes and features. Definitely worth the buy as of June 2017.

The reviews for this game are overly negative. I bought this game day one, and to be honest it want that great, but after the first new character? This game is already picking up fast. There is now a story mode and four new characters. The online and local multiplayer is fun. Oh before you freak out about the lack of an arcade mode it's called SURVIVALS.

So yeah, the game has connection issues. They will get fixed sometime, so patience is a must. If you put that aside, it's a good game. Great character design, good controller response, cool effects, OK story told like a comic book, but not sure if it's the best option for tournaments. Maybe time (patches?) will tell.

I give it a 10 just to balance those who put insane 0, this game deserve a 7 in his current state, the game is not polish, inexistant solo content and some minor graphic gliches.

The lack of content is what ruins this game. Maybe over time when additional modes are added, this could be the best fighting game to come out, but until then.....there is just not enough here.

Street Fighter always will, and always will be the premier fighting game franchise. The latest iteration of the franchise is a bit of a mixed bag, but ultimately enjoyable.

Firstly, the roster and combat is very well balanced, with some players having an overhaul on their moves lists and combo possibilities, leading to a much more accessible, but deep system which eases new players in, and offers advanced players great depth and plenty of advanced combo possibilities.

The initial roster is pretty good, with classics such as Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li in there, with seminal boss characters like Bison and Vega. Some returning faces include Birdie and R.Mika, with some brand new characters such as Rashid and Laura - a good well rounded roster - albeit with some strange omissions (no Sagat or Akuma?)

The combat itself feels much weightier than Street Fighter IV, with hits looking solid and the pace is quick, but not too frenetic. I did notice come hit detection issues, against larger characters (Zangief and Birdie) Where some heavy sweeps miss altogether, or tatsumakis failing to register.

The only gripe I can find beyond the strange occasional hit detection issue, and reason I haven't rated it higher is something I'm sure has contributed to the poor ratings on here across the board - the overall lack of content. The bundled story mode is a selection of 3 or 4 single round fights, which can take less thank 10 minutes per character to finish, with simplistic AI which sucks any challenge out of it. The survival mode is a decent mode, with four difficulties which will provide some fun for the single player, but thats really all there is for you - with a training mode giving you some basic options to learn your moves before heading out into the online modes of the game.

Overall, its the very best entry into the franchise, but the lack of content really is detrimental to its value. Luckily Capcom are going to be releasing a cinematic story and challenge mode with a free update in March - and hopefully the inclusion of the bizarrely omitted classic arcade mode will help the game with its longevity and mass appeal.

I overall disagree with the negative reception this game is getting. It could use a true story mode and overall more versus modes at launch, but considering how solid the game play is, and how consumer friendly the plan for dlc is, I honestly can't hold any of that against ono or capcom. I recommend it to any fighting game fan.

SFV is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be! Its make games like MKX, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd and Pokken look like Smash Bros AKA casual scrubs heaven.

We don't need Arcade mode or other useless single player contents because AI are free to good players. People who need them are casual scrubs who can't get good.

  1. There’s a great game in Street Fighter V, but only if you’re willing to learn the hard way. Capcom will need more than the few thousand competitors following the Capcom Pro Tour to make this game, and the series as a whole, sustainable for the future.

Everything that I didn’t like about SFIV is gone, leaving a deep yet easy to grasp, spectacular game. [04/2016, p.34]

Despite simplistic single-player and feeble tutorials, SFV is a completely essential fighting game. [Apr 2016, p.70]
